MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Message from His Worship Mayor Don Iveson

On behalf of City Council and the people of Edmonton, Alberta’s Capital City, I welcome everyone to the 2016 FISE World Series. We are excited to host this premier extreme sports competition featuring some of the best mountain bikers, BMX bikers and skateboarders from around the world. Not only will the competition showcase the tremendous passion and commitment of these athletes, but it will enhance our city’s reputation as a centre of sporting excellence. These alternative sports require precision, nerves of steel and strong determination, all of which Edmontonians are eager to witness over the coming days.

“On behalf of City Council and the people of Edmonton, Alberta’s Capital City, I welcome everyone to the 2016 FISE World Series.”

I thank the FISE team who helped to make this event possible. Your efforts give athletes in a variety of disciplines the opportunity to reach their full potential. For those visiting Edmonton, I encourage you to spend some time discovering some of the many places of interest in our city. Best of luck to all the competitors! Yours truly,

Don Iveson Mayor

WELCOME TO EDMONTON

After a trip to Denver, Colorado, FISE is excited to be in Alberta’s capital city!

FISE began in Montpellier, France in 1997 and has exploded to a full world series tour with five stops across the globe. Edmonton is the fourth stop of the series and a perfect fit for FISE. FISE World Edmonton is hosting Mountain Bike (MTB) Slopestyle, Skateboard, BMX Flatland, and BMX Freestyle Park.

FWE SPORTS

BMX Freestyle Park

BMX Freestyle Park is a completely free form style of riding. It demands spectacular technical skills, with athletes riding the park. You’ll witness big transitions on boxes, rails, and ramps. You won’t want to miss it!

UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup

For the first time in it’s history, BMX Freestyle Park has become a recognized and accredited discipline by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). UCI is the international authority for cycling and is recognized by the Olympic International Committee. The stakes are high for riders in this sport at FISE World Edmonton!

12

BMX Flatland

This discipline is quite different from other BMX styles. The riding takes place on a flat surface and doesn’t use any jumps, ramps, or rails. Riders perform balancing tricks on their bikes, often on one wheel or on their pegs. The bike used for riding BMX Flatland is shorter and lighter, making it more maneuverable. For fluidity, many Flatland riders only use the front brake or no brake at all! This is the second time BMX Flatland appears in the 2016 FISE World Series. Matthias Dandois, Alexandre Jumelin, and Joris Bretagnolles are the best in the world and will be competing in Edmonton!

FWE SPORTS

Skateboarding

Created in California by surfers, Skateboarding has come a long way. What started as a mode of transportation, boomed in the 80’s and morphed into the sport you see today. Skateboarding has become a culture, with its own fashion, music and international icons. Who hasn’t had a ‘skater’ phase in their life! Meet us at the park and admire the incredible talent of today’s best Skateboard athletes!

Mountain Bike Slopestyle

Mountain Bike Slopestyle (MTB) is performed on a course built to reproduce the features riders might find on a mountain. This sport is breathtaking to watch, with oversized features and massive jumps that result in high speeds and big air from riders. The challenge of bringing the mountain to the heart of the city is one FISE is always willing to take on!
