Weber County is governed by the Weber County Commission. Currently, the commis sion’s

are James H. “Jim” Harvey, Gage Froerer and Scott Jenkins. This form of government is somewhat unique as the commissioners fulfill both legislative and administrative functions. The commissioners develop policies for the county, then work to carry out those policies.

Several communities within Weber County are unincorporated, meaning services such as policing are provided by the county. While often small from a population standpoint and farther away from the center of activity, these communities can offer impressive amenities. Weber County’s unincorporated areas are Eden, Liberty, Nordic Valley, Reese, Taylor, Warren and West Weber.

“Farr West is located in northern central Weber County, so it’s not very Farr or West. It is named for two of its founders: Loren Farr and Chauncey West. I-15 runs through the middle of us, making this a great location for businesses and residents, with quick access to the rest of the world. Most folks know us for Smith & Edwards (every one knows where it is). Young families are abundant here as we have three Weber School District schools as well awesome parks, including a community fishing pond. We also still have farms and dairies that help keep the rural feel and open space, which is priceless.”

Annual city celebration: Fourth of July Celebration, July

“Settled in 1850, Marriott-Slaterville City boasts a rich heritage. John Marriott was the first permanent settler and is the namesake for Marriott. His decendants started Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel company. Slaterville was named after Rich ard Slater in honor of his service in the Mormon Battalion. In 1999, the residents of Marriott and Slaterville elected to merge together to form Marriott-Slaterville City. The Utah House of Representa tives adopted a resolution designating Marriott-Slaterville as Utah’s Model Open Space City, and the community continues to foster its aesthetic and conservation policies.”

Pleasant View

Population: 11,177 801-782-0539

“Pleasant View is a beautiful bedroom community located at the base of Ben Lomond Peak. Pleasant View is designed with large lots located in the foothills and increasing in density as one moves down the mountain toward the valley. Our commercial corridor is located mainly along SR-89 and 2700 North and is steadily increasing with more businesses. With a strong sense of heritage and belonging, Pleasant View continues to be a great place to raise a family.”

Harrisville

Population: 7,004 801-782-4100 cityofharrisville.com

Annual city celebration: Heritage Days, early August

“Harrisville is a small community tucked into the northern end of Weber County between Ogden and North Ogden. It’s not very big in area or in population, but Harrisville makes up for that with a rich heritage that enhances the quality of life found there. Whether your family roots have been sunk deep in the clay soil for generations or you have lived in Harrisville for a fairly short time, the atmosphere of a close-knit, caring community is what attracts and keeps people in Harrisville.”

“North Ogden is nestled in the northeast portion of Weber County and is surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains. It’s known as a great place to live! The northern boundary of the city lies at the foothills of the famous Ben Lomond Peak. Walking, hiking and mountain biking trails are plentiful. Annual city celebration: Roy Days, early August

“Why! History will tell you that William Baker was asked that question in 1873 about settling a dry, sandy patch of land that someday would be called Roy City. His response was simple: “To see what he could make of it.” With a humble beginning, Roy’s quality of life has been a central component in why residents choose to live here. You will not find a better place to raise a family. Our neighbor hoods are a collection of friendly, welcoming citizens who repeatedly go out of their way to serve others. I think William would be proud of what he started.”

Uintah

Annual city celebration: U-Days, early June

“At one time, Uintah had the most saloons and gambling halls in Utah. Later, Uintah became an agricultural communi ty. This brought new problems. A group of young men decided to run the school principal/teacher out of town. This caused a great division between families, friends and neighbors. The new principal saw the good in these young men when others could not. It was then that the “U” was placed on the mountain to symbolize “Uintah United.” Today, Uintah has the cutest babies, the smartest kids and the friendliest folks. For those looking for a rural lifestyle, the West Corridor offers the quiet and peace of the country while located only 20 minutes from the restaurants, shopping and activities of Ogden City. It’s the perfect balance of rural living and urban center amenities. The open land is attractive to homebuilders as well as those seeking newer subdivisions and larger lots; western Weber County is one of the fastest-growing areas in the state of Utah. New subdivisions are sprouting up fast, but they are still surrounded by acres of farm land. West Corridor residents also enjoy a panoramic view of the Wasatch Front mountains to the east.

Huntsville Town Liberty, Eden (unincorporated communities)

Perched high in the mountains east of Ogden, the Ogden Valley is a sports enthusi asts’ playground. It’s home to Weber County’s three ski resorts: Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Nordic Valley. The Monte Cristo Mountains on the valley’s east side feature an extensive network of trails for snowmobiling, horseback and ATV riding, hiking and snowshoeing.

The small town of Huntsville lies on a peninsula jutting out into Pineview Reservoir, a lake ideal for boating, water skiing, wakeboarding and fishing. Nearby Causey Reservoir attracts anglers, cliff jumpers, stand-up paddleboarders and kayakers.

Family Promise of Ogden

Family Promise of Ogden is a non profit organization that helps families with minor children conquer the chal lenges that led them to homelessness and build the skills needed for a suc cessful life.

FPO is an affiliate of Family Prom ise National, a nonprofit with more than 200 chapters nationwide that utilizes local partnerships to change lives. Fam ily Promise of Ogden does not receive funding from the national organization or state or government entities.

In fact, FPO operates with only two full-time employees and a volunteer force of about 400.

“We have a very wonderful and giving community that is always willing to be there for us and support us, and we have a great rate of success in what we do,” said Raquel Da Silva, executive director of Family Promise of Ogden.

Participating families stay at FPO’s shelter, but it operates very different ly than traditional shelters. Only four families are housed at a time, and each family receives intensive, individual case management on a daily basis. Families are also housed together instead of

being separated.

Monday through Friday, volunteers arrive early to help the families prepare for the day. The families are then taken to FPO’s day center, where they spend from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in classes learning various life skills.

In the evening, the families are taken back to the shelter where volunteers interact with them, providing friendship and a listening ear. The entire schedule is set up to replicate the feel of working at a job; Saturdays and Sundays are free days for the families to spend time together or visit family and friends.

“Our main goal is to give these fami lies hope and opportunities, and we do that by bringing them into our program and teaching them what they need so they don’t go back to being homeless,” Da Silva said. “We try to bring back a sense of normalcy for them and a sense of structure so when they leave the pro gram, they can maintain that structure.”

FPO’s volunteers are critical to its success. Each family receives a great deal of individual attention as they set goals and work toward achieving them.

“The volunteers in Ogden, Utah, are

In 2021:

Charter & Private Schools

In Utah, charter schools are tuition-free and open to any Utah student. They are publicly funded and accountable to the Utah State Board of Education. Charter schools serve students from K-12, but not all grades are offered at all charter schools. Enrollment is capped at a certain number at each school; if too many students apply for admission, the school holds a lottery to determine which students will be admitted.

Some charter schools place an emphasis on a specific sub ject matter area (such as science) or on a certain instructional methodology.

There are charter schools operating in several Weber Coun ty cities. There are also private schools available in the area, both religious and secular in nature, that offer instruction for students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.

WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY

“Weber State University has been an enduring presence in our community for more than 133 years – a history tightly braided with the story and citizens of Weber Coun ty, with cultural and economic impacts reaching throughout the state and beyond.

“This month, U.S. News & World Report ranked Weber State among the country’s best programs for nursing and engineering – a worthy accolade given we’re the foremost provider of health professionals in the state of Utah and a strong academic partner for Utah’s booming aerospace and defense industries.

“This academic year marks the 70th anniversary for our Annie Tay lor Dee School of Nursing, which produces more registered nurses than any other institution in Utah. Founded in 1953, it was one of six schools in the nation to pioneer a two-year degree program aimed

at addressing a nursing shortage. It has since grown to add a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees and a nurse practitioner degree – Weber State’s only doctoral program. There are plans to launch a physician assistant program in 2023 to further meet the needs of Utah’s healthcare industry.

“Our students and faculty are also crucial to Utah’s growing aerospace industry that increas ingly relies on our graduates from engineering, computer science, business and other fields. We’re already working alongside gov ernment and industry partners to develop next-generation technol ogies needed for national security and serving as an incubator for entrepreneurs and small business es that will enrich the region.

“To ensure northern Utah has the workforce for a strong economy, Weber State has a goal to increase access and completion for Latino

students and become an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution with 15% Hispanic enrollment by 2025.

“I’m proud to serve as the 13th president of Weber State Universi ty. In partnership with the citizens and businesses of Weber County, I look forward to furthering our legacy of educating, connecting and transforming students and communities.”

OGDEN CITY ARTS

Few cities are as forward-thinking as Ogden when it comes to the arts. Art cre ation and art access are priorities here, and Ogden City commits funding and staff to support both.

The Ogden City Arts Advisory Committee, a group of 16 volunteers, is a city-run committee that oversees Ogden arts programs and efforts with assistance from the city’s arts administrator, Lorie Buckley. One of the committee’s annual responsibilities is distributing grant funds. Anything or anyone in the arts — from large performing organizations to individual artists — can apply for these grants.

“I think a lot of people are wondering how Ogden is making such great strides in the arts, and I think it’s because we foster the arts, even down to the individual level,” Buckley said.

This year, the city approved $150,000 for the advisory committee to disperse as grants.

In addition to the grant program, the Ogden City Arts Advisory Committee and Lorie Buckley oversee the operation of a wide variety of venues and programs listed to the side.

NINE RAILS CREATIVE DISTRICT

In 2018, the Ogden City Council approved a master plan for the Nine Rails Creative District. Defined as the area between Grant and Madison Avenues from 24th to 26th Streets, this district is designed to create new opportunities for the community to engage with art while supporting cre ative places, programs and people.

DUMKE ARTS PLAZA

This plaza is the newest addition to the Nine Rails Creative District. This flexible public area provides space for smaller festivals and performanc es as well as art installations. Film and video art can be shown on the plaza’s large LED screen. Through an endowment, Weber State University provides a rotating sculpture exhibit at the plaza.

FIRST FRIDAY ART STROLL

On the first Friday of each month, various businesses in Ogden’s downtown area host an artist for the evening. The public is invited to visit the businesses, meet the artists and watch them work. While these are mainly visual artists, musicians and poets participate as well.

GRANT AVENUE MURALS

These murals were created as part of Ogden’s robust public arts program. In 2020, artist Don Rimx of Puerto Rico painted five 40-foot by 50-foot murals along Ogden’s Grant Avenue depicting important moments and people in Ogden’s history.

LOCAL ARTIST DATABASE

Lorie Buckley manages the Local Artist Database, which lists artists of any type (musicians, woodwork ers, sculptors, etc.) along with their contact information. It is free to join, and Buckley is able to forward artist opportunities to those who have signed up to be on the list.

However, by the 1960s, the use of trains for pas senger travel had decreased dramati cally. Ogden City eventually obtained the station and remodeled it using local, state and federal funding. It has served as a museum since 1978. Ogden’s Union Station now houses four museums: the Utah State Rail road Museum, the John M. Browning Firearms Museum, the Browning–Kimball Classic Car Museum, and the Utah Cowboy Western Heritage Museum. Also housed at the station are two art galleries: the Gallery at the Station and the Myra Powell Gallery). In addition, Union Station contains a research library and photographic collection.

BUSINESS DEPOT OGDEN

Business Depot Ogden (BDO) is a premier industrial business park situated on 1,118 acres with excellent access to Interstate 15 and Interstate 84 with easy access to the Western United States.

BDO has more than 12.5 million square feet of warehousing, manufacturing and office space and an additional 225 acres of ground available for new devel opment. More than 130 unique business es and 6,500 employees have made BDO their home.

The area was formerly known as the Defense Depot Ogden, a military hub for supplies and transport that operated for 54 years. In 1940, the U.S. Army requested the War Department establish a depot for distribution of equipment to field a force of 500,000 men. In under 48 hours, the citizens of Ogden rallied together to raise nearly $100,000 to purchase land and ensure the War Department selected their city as the site. Within months, 41 build ings were under construction. On Sept. 15, 1941, the new Defense Depot Ogden officially opened.

For the next 55 years, Defense Depot Ogden continued to be an important as set to the U.S. military, providing supplies for engagements such as the Korean, Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts. In 1995, Defense Depot Ogden was closed, and during the next few years, the land and buildings were sectionalized and deeded to Ogden City.

In 1999, the Boyer Company entered into a long-term agreement with the city to manage and develop the facility into the future, creating what is today Busi ness Depot Ogden.

Aaron Austad

“Over the past 20 years, Business Depot Ogden has grown into the largest business park, per square foot, in the state of Utah and has been successful in attracting world-class companies such as Hershey, Home Depot and Northrop Grumman. We also pride ourselves in helping small startup businesses to thrive, suc ceed and grow into large, successful enterprises. We have been able to do this by offering a wide variety of building options, sizes and pricing — anything from space built in 1941 to new state-of-the-art complex builds.

“One of our greatest competitive advantages is our interaction with Ogden City, Weber County and local businesses. Because of these amazing relationships, we are able to streamline the design, permitting and construc tion of buildings. This allows us to complete projects in eight to 10 months that would take most developers well over a year to design and build. In our competitive business world, speed is vital, and the collaboration between local government and businesses has allowed us to win an abundance of projects that were time sensitive in nature.

“None of the success we’ve seen through the years could have been attain able without the incredible workforce that calls Weber County home. Busi ness Depot Ogden has over 6,500 employees working for 130 businesses. This high-quality, educated workforce continues to attract the attention of the national site selectors as well as the businesses that they represent.

“Last year, we completed 10 buildings, which constituted over 1 million square feet of new space. This year, we are constructing nine buildings, add ing a little more than 750,000 square feet to the market. We anticipate that most, if not all, of these buildings will be fully leased before project comple tion.

“The future is bright in Ogden, Utah, and we are excited to continue work ing hand-in-hand with local government, businesses and the Chamber to further the growth of our amazing community.”

NORTHROP GRUMMAN

Thousands of jobs to be added by local employer Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman is the largest aero space and defense employer in Utah with about 7,000 employees total and about 2,000 of those located in the Roy/Ogden area. Its pioneering solutions equip its customers with the capabilities they need to connect, advance and protect the U.S. and its allies.

In 2020, Northrop Grumman was formally selected by the U.S. Air Force to modernize the nation’s aging intercon tinental ballistic missile system under a nine-year, $13.3 billion contract. This ensured that billions of dollars of work

and thousands of jobs would come to Hill Air Force Base.

Known as the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent program, the work will be head quartered at Hill and involves the United States’ current land-based ballistic missile force, which is now made up of some 400 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles. The Air Force is upgrading the missiles, their rocket motors and other components, but it plans to replace them through the GBSD program by about 2030.

The new program includes the acquisi

tion of missiles, new command and con trol systems and, eventually, large-scale renovations of launch control centers.

Work associated with the program will also be performed at the company’s Promontory facility in Box Elder County, along with a few other locations across the U.S. But the lion’s share of the pro gram will happen on the far northwest corner of Hill.

The GBSD program is expected to bring at least 2,250 jobs to the Hill head quarters location alone over the next 20 years.

THE WONDER BLOCK

Plans are going forward to turn the location of a former Wonder Bread plant in downtown Ogden into a mixed-use development incorporating downtown parking and multifamily residential units.

Known as the “Wonder Block,” the de velopment is designed with the purpose of enhancing and supporting downtown Ogden’s Historic 25th Street.

The property was purchased from Flowers Baking Co. in 2016 for $2.1 million with the MAKE Ogden Downtown Master Plan and the Ogden General Plan in mind.

The Wonder Block is part of the Con tinental Community Reinvestment Area Plan and Budget, which was created in 2019 to facilitate redevelopment of large industrial sites and underutilized proper ties located in the downtown area.

Letter from the 2022 Chair, Mark Adams

As a representative of Ogden Regional Medical Center, a proud Chamber member since 1984, I feel honored to serve as the 2022 Chair of the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce. It is wonderful to live and work in the Ogden area and I am proud to be counted as a member of the Chamber.

Representing over 800 organiza tions, the quality and strength of this Chamber continues to grow. Cham ber members enjoy multiple benefits, including exposure for your business, networking-friendly environments, legislative advocacy, professional de velopment programs and community engagement. I have seen organiza tions thrive because of their involve ment in our Chamber programs.

Among the many benefits that the

Chamber provides, one of the most valuable is the expansive network of business and community leaders who share a common goal: promot ing and protecting the interests of the Ogden-Weber business com munity. A sense of belonging can drive positive results for businesses, and I believe that the Ogden-Weber Chamber has fostered a culture of belonging.

The Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce has become a hub for businesses in all industries through out northern Utah and the surround ing regions. Regardless of size or industry, the Chamber provides unique opportunities suited to your business needs, and I invite you to inquire about Chamber membership. There is no better place to develop

your business than the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce.

As this Chamber continues to grow, I look forward to seeing the visibility and credibility of the local business community continue to improve.

YEARS & COUNTING

“When my husband and I opened our business, neither of us had much experience running a business. I want ed to join the Chamber to be a mem ber of the Women in Business commit tee, and that was great, but I also got so much more from the association with other business owners. From Contacts Networking groups to Busi ness After Hours events, I would talk to others or hear them discuss their businesses. I learned so much from my association with others in the business arena — their ideas, their suggestions and advice. I also attended seminars that were amazing and helped me build my business.”

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

“I have made innumerable con nections and created many lasting relationships. My first Chamber relationships were made in a Contacts Networking group. Because we saw each other a couple times a month and attended networking events, it was easy to develop a relationship. I’ve created contacts in Women in Busi

ness and served on the board – that was a great experience, and many of those contacts became good friends and clients.

“Best of all, I became a Spiker. The friendships and relationships among that group are amazing. I love all of them. Relationships are so import ant, not only in business but in one’s overall well-being. The Chamber has been a catalyst for my creating lasting relationships.”

REACHING POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS

“There are many benefits of being a Chamber member. The Business Spot light program gave my business expo sure, recognition and an opportunity to reach potential customers. We’ve also taken advantage of the Chamber Discount program, which is an easy way to support members and bring in more business. I’ve attended many Chamber events – Business After Hours, Morning Speaker Series, NuBiz Symposium, etc., and all have been so enjoyable and informative. The on
