BRASS BANDS IN UTAH
Dr. Kirt Saville is an emeritus faculty of the BYU School of Music where he served from 2008 -2021 as associate director of bands, professor of music education and five years as the director of the School of Music. Since his appointment as the director of the Utah Premiere Brass in 2010 Dr. Saville has been honored with the opportunity and privilege of making music with many of the intermountain west’s finest brass and percussion players. Dr. Saville holds a doctor of education from Utah State University, a master of music in woodwind performance from North Texas State University in multiple woodwinds, and a bachelor’s degree in music education from Brigham Young University. Dr. Saville’s greatest joy is found when he is with his sweetheart of 49 years, surrounded by his five children, their wonderful spouses, and eighteen extraordinarily gifted grandchildren.
Provo 4th Ward Band Circa 1880 At the turn of the 19th century, it’s estimated there were nearly 200 brass bands in Utah. Many pioneer companies brought their own bands with them across the plains. Nearly every town boasted its own “town band”. They played for dances, baseball games, stake conferences and civic functions. Utah Premiere Brass is proud to continue this rich tradition.
