I think i’m
turning Japanese
Image of fog linen trays courtesy of muhs home
jenny gumbert We all know that Japan is pretty damn great. The food is delicious, the street style stunning, and the anime is adorable. But it wasn’t until recently that I discovered one of my new favorite exports: their simple homewares. There is a new trend in Japanese design called the natural lifestyle, which is dominated by linen, washed cotton and simple, but beautiful pieces. Muted colors and rustic woods rule, and everything is of the
highest quality. While in New York recently, I visited Muji, a fantastic store full of these simple but perfect decorative yet functional objects. The moment that I walked in, I was sold. Now I can’t help but think of how I want to give my home and wardrobe a natural makeover full of these beautiful items from various Japanese designers. With everything so muted, I may still have to sneak in a few bold pieces to keep things interesting...

1. Kitchen Towels by Fog Linen from MUHS HOME, $16 each - My current towel collection consists of various random pieces that I have collected over the years. I would love to start anew with a set of these linen towels. 2. Octagonal Tray by Susumu Seto from MUHS HOME, starting at $570 - I love a good tray, and this dark wood would make the perfect resting place for one of my glass teapots or a good home for a bottle of bourbon and a couple glasses. 3. Organic Canvas Tote by MUJI, $49.50 - Who needs a trendy purse when you can have something neutral that goes with everything? The large size but basic design of this one would match any outfit and fit everything from a laptop to a good book.
