Thinking Outside The Xbox

Formula Fever john mcentire

Two weeks ago here in Austin, Texas, we were gearing up for somewhat of an event. We shipped in half of Europe for the opening Grand Prix on the only F1 track in North America, the Circuit of the Americas. Everyone caught the bug. Bright colors, modern designs, and the high-pitch engine whine of 0–100 in 2.5 seconds descended upon the city. Downtown shut its doors and everyone who had a car got in it, promptly gridlocking the city—a very anti-F1 side effect—but what we lacked in freeway space, we made up for with loud noises and belligerent excess. The whole town was buzzing, partly from excitement, and partly from the endless stream of Red Bulls being handed out. Images of the Circuit of the Americas’ iconic observation tower made even the most Nascar of us wish for a weekend when we could have an uber-mod chic, flat, but as I searched for minimalist combinations of metal and glass, my taste slowly returned to the heart of why we like cars. No matter how pretty the outside is, we love them for the noise, the rumble, the raw power created out of nothing but steel and sheer force of will.

1 1. Speedo Lamp by Eric Johnson - Even gear heads have to sleep. What could be a better reading light as you curl up ready to thumb through the new issue of Hot Rod than a dissected scooter? It even looks good too. Johnson has redeemed the moped. 2. Continental Radial Engine Coffee Table by MotoArt - No, this did not come out of a car, but I found many people converting automotive engines into coffee tables to varying effect. Planes, however, take it one step farther. It speaks for itself.

3. Firebird Sofa by Steven Shaver Designs - Have you ever thought while riding shotgun in your friend’s car that’s much cooler than yours, “Man, this is so comfy. I totes wish I could make it into a loveseat.”? Hell no. You want it because it’s badass. You want to chop up that car and put it in your living room like a mounted deer, equal parts admiration and conquest. Now you can, or at least have someone else do the cool, manly work for you.
