I
am a student at the University of Toronto majoring in English & Psychology. This spring issue was a little bit difficult for me as I was located in Toronto in progress with my studies, however, Tessa made our communication remarkably easy and the editing process was as smooth as it could be. As the editor of STANDOUT, I tend to the overall structure and flow of the magazine – I edit, proofread, and ensure that the writing follows this issues theme of Rebirth & Discover. To all my readers out there: Be prepared for our next summer quarterly. I am excited to be able to physically participate in the development of the summer issue with the team in Calgary and I expect the company to advance with the release of the spring issue in a way that allows us to further define how we STANDOUT. Enjoy the rebirth of spring, and look forward to the discovery of summer.
Welcome to the new Canadian brand of publications, STANDOUT. We are thrilled to be engaged in Canada’s creative industry and publishing about the local businesses we discover. We truly believe that every entrepreneur deserves a publishing that conveys the passion they put into their work in order to ensure that their dreams come true. We encourage the public to support local businesses. Truthfully, it lets small and large business owners and their employees live their dream and make a living from it. “SUPPORT LOCALS, SUPPORT LIVES.” We are excited to show our readers that have shown us support what we have accomplished. We, as a company, have grown so much and evolved properly to target our niche. We want to give young budding and successful entrepreneurs a chance to be published in a high quality print and digital magazine for a great cost. To see your story in a print magazine or on a foam core board, professionally hung up on the wall in your office or studio, is a great reminder of the success that you have achieved with your business. We provide our readers with the ability to purchase the issue and have it shipped directly to their door or mail for a reasonable price in a time frame that they choose. We are not focusing on print bulk or quantity over quality; we treat our quarterly print like a special portfolio book in full magazine style – a shiny gloss cover to show its worth. Our ability to connect Canada’s massive creative industry with local businesses and clients allows them to share their story in a magazine style of design. Through the use of our platform, the strength of these connections allows for successful networking and a reward token for these businesses. When we discover businesses or businesses discover us, we are able to study the company’s design and develop a layout in a print issue or digital e-zine to show our readers why your brand is a STANDOUT. Do not hesitate to contact us as we would love to hear feedback from our readers. STANDOUT is looking forward to discovering and learning more about the Canadian businesses that have original products, which can be featured in our future issues. Treat yourself to an awesome publication that will be prove to be a wonderful keepsake in your home or office. Happy reading and we look forward to hearing from you guys! Have a great Spring and see you in our August 02 issue!

CANADIAN BLOGGER THAT DOES IT DIFFERENTLY
THE STYLE SAVER The Style Saver uses her blog as a tool to show how to save on Style PHOTOGRAPHY (Clockwise) Luigi Lauresno, Thomas Bullock, iphone & Luigi Laureano ARTICLE Melissa Hazen CONTRIBUTOR Elizabeth Manuntag
T
he fashion industry is ever-evolving with the retail prices on items escalating with higher demand. Tips on how to keep fashion affordable through thrifting and consignment shopping, for example, branches out into a more sustainable way of shopping. Style Saver, a blog with tips on how to spend less on fashion, was originated and developed out of a desire to show shoppers that being fashionable didn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. The brand stands out by being transparent about the prices and itemizing every outfit in the blog post so that the readers are aware of how much an outfit costs. Style Saver conveys chicness and gives an honest opinion on how to shop smart while retaining the elements of style, which allows fashion to become accessible to everyone.

1. SCOUR THE SALE RACKS — head straight towards the
sale racks in any store. They’re clearly marked, usually in the back, and if you catch the store on a good day, it might be an additional sale on top of an already reduced price. 2. GO THRIFTING — Thrifting is a great way to kill a few hours by flipping through some interesting items that people get rid of - and sometimes, those items will be in the form of a designer dress or purse that fits your style. Many thrift stores also pair up with charities so it’s great way to give back to your community. 3. GO CONSIGNMENT SHOPPING — For those wary of
the secondhand shopping phenomenon, I point them in the direction of a consignment shop. It’s still a sustainable and affordable way to shop, but many fashion consignment shops are picky and curate the items they sell very carefully, ensuring that the items you’re purchasing are in tip-top shape.
4. WAREHOUSE, SAMPLE, AND TRUNK SALES — Mailing lists, Twitter, and posters around
my neighbour usually call to the attention of an upcoming warehouse, sample, or trunk sale. This is the best way to score your favourite pricier brand for less. 5. KNOW WHAT TIME OF YEAR TO SHOP — January is a great month
to shop, since stores are trying to rid themselves of the Christmas overstock to make room for spring/summer stuff. I also like shopping back-to-school sales
6. RAID A FRIEND’S CLOSET —
You’d be surprised to see what you’ll find in other people’s closets. What your friend might be sick of wearing may be your new favourite piece. 7. ATTEND A CLOTHING SWAP
— Clothing swaps are a great way to purge your closet and replace tired clothing with fresh items. Hosting your own swap is a fun way to spend an afternoon; get a group of friends together, ask them to bring a bag of clothing, shoes, and accessories they don’t wear anymore, dump it all out on someone’s living room floor and voila; instant rummage sale, only for free. 8. DO-IT-YOURSELF — If you’re really crafty and good with
your hands, doing it yourself by sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc can save you a ton of money and leave you with a very customized piece. 9. REWORK AN OLD FAVOURITE — Sometimes, you just
need to wear a skirt as a poncho, a poncho as a scarf, or that old button-up shirt backwards to inject a little inspiration in your wardrobe. Reworking an old favourite by wearing it in a way that it wasn’t intended to can be a quick fix for a new (and free!) style. 10. KEEP AN OPEN MIND! — Expand your shopping habits
to include buying brands you would never think of wearing, visiting stores you’ve never shopped at, and keeping your eyes open everywhere for a good deal. You never you know what you might find! standoutpublications.com / Summer 2015

With all proceeds being donated to the Calgary Health Trust, over $500,000 thousand dollars were raised by this event and its electronic silent auction in support of the Neo Natal Intensive Care Units (NICU) at the Foothills Medical Centre. Hosts Bill Brooks, The Style Guys: Jason Krell and Aly Vehji kept us all entertained and informed about the Calgary Health Trust and its importance to Calgarians. Off the runway, the guests looked absolutely amazing, rivaling what was being shown on the runway. The mode du jour of Bella 2015 was stylish and well put together. eing new to the fashion and art scene, I didn’t know what to expect when I arrived at the Savoir Faire Fashion and Art Show held at the Le Germain Hotel on April 18th, 2015. What I got was an extremely enjoyable evening. The evening began with good wine and food and music being played by Desiree Arthur and Kirstyn Johnson. That set a lovely tone to the evening where guests walked around the displayed art and viewed (and purchased) some amazing pieces by various artists. The Catwalk section began a bit later and was hosted by Ms. Adora Nwofor. I have not laughed so much in one evening in a long time. Adora Nwofor is a fabulously talented comedienne and had the crowd going for the entire evening. The show began with the delightful Havana Dance Troupe. The music and dancing created the right ambience to continue on with the fashion show. First up the catwalk was jewellery by Cheche Couture. Besides providing some nice eye candy models for both ladies and gentlemen, the jewellery was spectacular, unique and creative. Each model showcased a different piece modelled against black clothing to exhibit the full effect. Her jewellery is Afro-Euro centric and uses materials from Europe, North and Latin America as well as Africa. After a short intermission the second part of the catwalk commenced introducing Nyolouch Designs: Fall/Winter 2015 Collection by Julia Otieno. The outfits exhibited were unique and stylish for both women and men. Her use of colors and materials were very appealing and the pieces both beautiful and bold. As mentioned, Ms. ADora Nwofor was a lovely host who engaged the crowd and put a great spin on the evening making the entire show a fun and playful event, while showcasing some serious talent. The evening was finished off with a great party featuring a live DJ and Bar until the wee hours of the night.

INFLUENTIAL CANADIAN BLOGGERS
THE INSTA GENERATION
Katie Marks and Calgary’s passionate fashion bloggers create hype around the city PHOTOGRAPHY Eric Westrum WRITER Lisa Kauffmann
T
he winds of change are blowing in the fashion world. The select world of fashion dictators of the high end glossies are being challenged for readership by the upstarts known as fashion and lifestyle bloggers. Well known bloggers such as The Sartorialist and Billy Boy are being courted by designers to feature their designs on their blogs, and are raking in six figure incomes doing it. No longer are readers only told what to wear by the high end magazines such as W Vogue and ELLE, but also by the street bloggers and the Instagram generation. STANDOUT Publications had a chance to catch up with Katie Marks, a local Calgary blogger who has her own fashion and lifestyle blog, “Toques and Truffles’, to give us her take on this new facet of fashion. WHAT IS YOUR FASHION BACKGROUND? HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FASHION? WHEN?
I don’t have a formal fashion background, in fact, when I was young I used to hate shopping, my Mum would have to drag me with her when she wanted to go to the mall - now I’m the one keeping her fed and hydrated for marathon shopping trips when she comes to visit. I don’t exactly remember when or why that changed, but at some point I fell in love with observing everyone’s individual style, how they put outfits together, why they chose the pieces they did, but especially how it makes you feel to be comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING TOQUES AND TRUFFLES AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO BECOMING A LIFESTYLE BLOGGER?
I started the blog five or six months ago now; I volunteer throughout different not-for-profit organizations around the city, like to eat great food and take photographs, cook and bake. So with all of that, I’ve met some absolutely incredible people doing amazing things and wanted a platform that I wasn’t able to find anywhere else where I could share all of it, and of course to try to provide some outfit inspiration from time-to-time. >

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE CLOSET SALE AND HOW IT SUPPORTS THE BLOGGERS IN CALGARY.
WHY?
The closet sale started with my own need to get rid of way too many clothes that I had been hanging onto for a year or so. I figured that the other bloggers probably had some things they would like to get rid of too, but I wanted more for the sale to serve as a place for our readers and the public to meet us and get to know the fashion and lifestyle bloggers in their city. We had such a great response for the first sale that it will happen again later this year, it was the perfect opportunity for us to hang out with each other and get to know our readers better.
Fashion inspiration comes from many different places for me bloggers, clothing brands, off-duty models, Instagram, to name a few. It’s everywhere, all the time. I definitely have a few favourite fashion bloggers across Canada and the US who share the same laissez-faire, minimalistic approach to fashion that I enjoy where I actually take the time to read through their blog instead of just following them on Instagram. A fashion editor that always pleases - Eva Chen (she just stepped down from Lucky Magazine though!). DO YOU THINK FASHION BLOGS TAKE ATTENTION AWAY FROM MAINSTREAM FASHION MAGAZINES? EXPLAIN.
No, I don’t think they take away from magazines. Blogging is a very personal experience, people can see how clothing items work in real-life situations versus in a studio on a size 00 model that’s been photoshopped and airbrushed. The majority of bloggers show clothing and brands that are attainable, whereas magazines are for daydreaming, to seeing gorgeous and expensive things. Bloggers in turn interpret these trends into practical pieces for everyday. ARE YOU ABLE TO EARN GOOD MONEY THROUGH YOUR BLOG? ARE YOU PAID FROM PARTNERSHIPS OR ADVERTISING?
Since the blog is pretty much still in it’s infancy, the paid partnerships have just begun. I’m hopeful that it will continue so that eventually it’s able to grow into a full-time job, I’m determined to keep working on it to head in that direction. WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON THE CALGARY FASHION BLOGGER SCENE? ARE YOU ALL TIGHT KNIT? IS THERE HEALTHY COMPETITION? IS THERE ROOM FOR MORE? OR IS IT SATURATED?
We are tight knit! We’re lucky that we all have different approaches in terms of brands and styles that there isn’t a lot of overlap where we would view each other as competition. Almost everyone who is blogging in Calgary are very supportive of each other, we encourage, collaborate and share ideas, hang out for coffee and dinner dates. FAVORITE DESIGNER(S).
Givenchy and Balenciaga. FAVOURITE CANADIAN DESIGNER
It’s hard to choose just one! Nicole Campre, Matthew Gallagher, Paul Hardy, Bano eeMee, Caitlin Power.. the list could go on, we have so much talent in this country! YOUR VIEW ON THE CALGARY FASHION SCENE AND WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE.
There’s a lot of great, creative talent in the city that I hope stays here. Luckily we have a great non-profit organization like PARK (shameless plug!) trying to make the industry sustainable in Calgary so that the designers and artists can thrive. I think that this will only continue and grow which is very exciting for everyone.

By meeting and talking to these talented people, I also gained knowledge from learning their expertise advice. ANOTHER CREATIVE THING I AM IN LOVE WITH Aside from fashion, I also have a huge passion for science and drawing. Both require creativity in different ways. Science is about rationality and evidence, but the process to reach to discovery will take one to think outside the box. Drawing on the hand, comes from the emotional attachment of my personal experience, which I translate it into a pictorial on paper. FAVORITE

favorite is still Italian fashion, so I would say Milan Fashion Week.
BEST CITY FOR CREATIVITY…
Recently, I am in love with the creativity and designs from Stockholm in Sweden. The Scandinavians have developed a very unique culture for innovations, with fresh ideas from amazing talents. MOST VALUABLE PERSONAL ITEM Right now, my smart phone – I do all my blogging, social media, email, reading news and taking photos with one device. It’s sad how we come to relying on it so much, but if I lose my phone I’d feel naked and disconnected with the rest of the world.

geless, sophistication and originality are standards in the marketing universe. More so, Calgary’s diverse market requires a unique form of all-in-one applications, from one specialized company able to maneuver, acquire and attain the needs of the clientele. Vinegar Designs Lab is a “one-stop-laboratory that provides advertising products, marketing & branding consultation, I.T. development, network and social media tools” for clientele who are seeking an effective, but diverse and creative product for their commercial needs. Jack Lee and Vincent Law, founders and owners of Vinegar Designs Lab, pride the company on the exclusive and varietydriven team of talent that sets the organization apart from similar agencies in Calgary.
“As Vinegar Designs Lab’s clients, [the business] deserves personalized and carefully tailored service that would match their needs perfectly,” Law said. “It is our firm’s mission and goal to ensure one hundred per cent satisfaction with our service and product.” As anticipation with market change and development, Vinegar Designs Lab believes a wise prediction of the industry will take the company into a successful future of expansion in the Calgary area. “Oil & gas, bars and restaurants will continue to be two of the prospective industries, out of many in Calgary,” said Lee. “After all, as a leading province of the oil and gas industry in Canada, we can never underestimate consumers’ monetary value and buying power. “We also see a consistent growth of the IT sector. And although we couldn’t say Calgary is becoming a fashion capital, we can see the effort has been made in the city [in] trying to build a solid fashion community.” Vinegar Designs Lab looks forward to the continued engagement in Calgary’s corporate and business communities, bringing its highest satisfaction to their clients advertising needs. “By working together we can bring our special skills to the table, building a stronger network as one unit.” “We cannot express how grateful we feel with the tremendous support we’ve been getting from everyone.”
“WE ARE A DESIGNS LAB; A LABORATORY THAT CATERS TO DESIGN AND CREATIVITY WITH SCIENTIFIC METHODLOGY AS THE BACKBONE OF OUR FOUNDING PHILSOPHY.” “Vinegar Designs Lab wears many different coats,” Law said. “Our team consists of: a scientist, fashion model, psychologist, cinematographer, photographers, branding consultants, graphic designers, IT developers, fashion designers and writers.” “A well-rounded team that understands the current affairs of the world.” Vinegar Designs Lab approach’s each client with a personalized method of marketing and promoting through concentrated theories of research and trend foreshadowing to develop customized business advertising plans. “We observe and research the client’s market and help them to understand their standpoint and advantages within the market,” Lee said. “We then formulate a hypothesis and advertising strategies with a result-oriented focus. “We test out our theories with different advertising tools to get the most consistent result; making sure our clients benefit from our service and products is the priority.” Vinegar Designs Lab, in such a saturated and unique market, allows every client to become the perfect fit for the agency, rather then focusing in one niche area. standoutpublications.com / Summer 2015

f you’re looking for a unique way to express yourself through words and art, look no further than to Uppercase Press where the founder, Lu Mascaro, creates and develops original letterpress pieces in order to sell to her clientele. Starting up in 2012, the letterpress studio, based out of Edmonton, AB, has been steadily on the up rise with new customers feeding through the studio and loyal customers returning for more projects. Mascaro’s inspiration for Uppercase Press originated from her dream to become a writer – her love for words, illustrations, and typefaces created her own unique style. Mascaro’s personal belief is that providing good news in the form of art is an emotional process which opens many doors. She keeps this belief in mind every time she prints letters on a page in hopes of bringing more happiness to the world. “I love printing on a blank piece of paper. For me it’s like magic.” Mascaro explains as she describes his company’s goals. “As a print maker it is my goal to provide the best option for my clients in terms of paper quality and impression. I do my best to offer them the best results and budget combo.” Uppercase Press has recently gone through a rebranding onto its second company name. Wanting to retain the jargons that are still common in letterpress studios, Mascaro decided to change the name into something that also reflected her style, clean and simple, in order to attract the attention of male and female customers.

Since the opening of the studio, Mascaro describes the process of running his self-employed company as being challenging. With the increase in customer volume and no background in design or print making, her one-man show becomes overwhelming if she cannot properly organize her priorities. It has been a learning process for Mascaro with a series of new discoveries in relations to skills and style in the development of her company. She believes that there will be customers who will appreciate her style, and so she continues to offer simple design services to her clients while consulting design specialists for more elaborate projects. “The most important thing is to be true to your own style. The competition is brutal in the letterpress industry and the best thing to do is to make sure [that] you are building your own identity. This is the only thing that will set you apart.” Uppercase Press is a studio that started out mainly to see more happiness in the world and Lu Mascaro strives to achieve that by offering the best customer experience to her clients. If you are looking for some good smiles and a little bit of love, step into the studio to experience words transformed into art.

he explosion of the food-truck scene on Calgary’s streets has proved to be a successful industry that has exposed great ideas from inspiring entrepreneurs. The Crafted Artisan Truck, owned and operated by Pamela Gillespie, was enthused “by the overwhelming success of the food truck industry [and] the growing trend of pop-up shops” that provided a vision of a new mobile business. Being the first of its’ kind based out of Calgary, the mobile artisan boutique focuses its services on the exciting industry of local designers and homemade goods. “Being mobile, we’re not just keeping our rent down, we’re able to respond directly to our customers, wherever they are,” Gillespie explains, “we’re not locked into one spot like traditional brick and mortar shops, [we] can go to where our target demographic is.” By travelling to the people, Crafted Artisans Truck is assisting in the exposure of the talented local designer community that creates beautifully crafted and one-of-a-kind work for curious clients.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS ON THE MOVE
“We offer a wide selection of ‘make & mingle’ workshops run by local artisans,” Gillespie said. “This allows them to connect with their community and build on [the] growing appreciation of handmade goods.” Not only is this the first mobile retail shop on Calgary’s streets, it is an original way of marketing for local artists through the expansion of its location to every corner of the city. “Being mobile gives us an outlet to expand our customer base and further solidify our presence in the Calgary market and beyond,” Gillespie explains. “This will give our participating artists a much greater reach and we’ll be able to showcase their work in places that they might not normally go to. “Alternatively, customers who may not normally go to craft markets could be attracted to this novel shopping experience and discover artists they might not normally be exposed to.” Crafted Artisan Truck understands the importance of being interactive within the community and it helps to foster relationships with artists and customers in hopes of creating “richer experiences and grow[ing] relationships.”
“CRAFTED IS A NOVEL AND UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS AND MAKERS TO GET THEIR BRAND NOTICED,” GILLESPIE SAID. “We’re a one-stop shop – whether customers are shopping for themselves, family or friends, Crafted has something for everyone.” Crafted Artisans Truck brings a unique and entertaining way to showcase homemade goods to shoppers by offering a perfect resource to learn about the pieces and designers. “Our goal is to unleash the creativity of other people [and] for consumers who deeply care about the origin of the goods they buy.” “It’s for someone who understands and appreciates the time, talent and dedication that goes into making handcrafted items.”

he technological and digital age continues to move quicker then rushing floodwaters and the emphasis of retaining the attention of value in the industry is core for Calgary based BizBOXTV. BizBOXTV is a digital television commercial advertising company that prides the columns of its work on the importance of showing off the corporate and creative industry. Lisa Ostrikoff, founder of BizBOXTV, saw the lack of willingness to change in traditional media outlets as an opportunity to explore and define the future shift of media and advertising.
“I TOOK MY PASSION FOR CREATIVE VIDEO STORYTELLING AND THE QUICKLY EVOLVING DIGITAL WORLD, SAID GOODBYE TO TRADITIONAL MEDIA AND LAUNCHED BIZBOXTV.” “BizBOXTV has told the stories of thousands of Canadian business owners and we’re just at the very beginning, as this digital world and online video continues to increase in importance.” > standoutpublications.com / Summer 2015

MEDIA AGENCY TO WATCH FOR
BizBOXTV understands that targeting a niche audience is important to selling and strives to attain that goal for the most successful advertising for the said client. “Combing the most persuasive form of media and the most advanced methods of digital targeting, engagement, measurement and optimization, we know, because numbers talk, that what we do, offers unparalleled results in this digital world we are immersed in today,” Ostrikoff said. The creative industry, although very competitive, is the most liberal in adopting new and innovative ways of publicity and promotion. These methods are grasped and utilized in the smartest way by television and digital media commercial advertising. BizBOXTV represents the artistic communities with the trendiest digital approach to its’ advertising. “Embracing the measurable world of digital advertising offers unparalleled potential for those brands who want to get and stay ahead of the curve,” Ostrikoff said. “With BizBOXTV, businesses don’t have to wonder where their ad dollars are going and that’s so exciting.” With the downfall of the traditional media advertising, BizBOXTV has picked a path that will drive the success of the business and their clients. “Digital media will soar, while traditional media will continue to whither,” Ostikoff said. “ Take a look around at what’s happening to traditional media outlets; they’re too late to the digital game.” BizBOXTV brands itself on the strengths of innovation and disruption while being “different and powerful”, helping their “clients prove they are too.” “We live by the mantra of ‘vision, passion, instinct [and] agility’, which is apparent in everything we do for ourselves and clients. “We’re the only one in Canada doing what we do, the way we do it. We make our clients standout via video and that’s why we are so successful.” THE PROCESS OF WORKING WITH

t a TV show segment, The Sunday Omony Show that myself as a CEO co-hosted in the beginning of March, I met a beautiful and radiant comedian that is also a makeup artist. Throughout the whole evening, I thought it was a great idea to feature an comedian as comedy is a huge part of our lifestyle. To live a happy and positive life, we must learn how to be happy and to look for positive things everyday. We sat down with Adora Nwofor and she told us how she lives her life. We were so inspired that we wanted to share with our readers.
EVERY DAY I LAUGH. It is integral to happiness. I DREAM. I am very much a realist in my thought process so I
make sure that I take a minute to think of what I would like in my life. Sometimes it’s a pony, others it’s the beach or millions of dollars. I dream of travelling the world and finding myself through a new experience or the twinkle of life in some one’s eyes. Yachts and 50 year old scotch. Secluded villages and eating something I thought I would never touch. Some days it’s the dream of making a packed stadium laugh with wild abandon or sitting front row at Paris Fashion week. It could be anything and it changes, but I dream because my dreams come true. I AM THANKFUL. I am a blessed person. I was struck by
a car in 2011 and every day I am in physical pain to say the least. Most people do not know or see but I could be paralysed, without a limb or worse, expired. So even when I am hurting and miserable I recall what it WAS like and how far I have come and I am thankful for the opportunity to make things better. I LOVE MY KIDS. I say “I love you” often, and so do they. I
think people see me as strong, but my kids make me into MUSH. We love unconditionally. I do not care what they do, I will love them. I want them to have successful lives as contributing members of society, whatever that means. They show me that I am connected and that keeps me grounded. I need them, and
for a little while longer they need me. My hope is they will soon want me in their lives and it will be my honor to keep being their mom and have a friendship with the people they become. COLOR OF BLUE: I know
it sounds insane, but it makes me happy. Literally blue puts a smile on my face. It is my favorite color and I don’t know if anyone will get it but I love it. It connects me to the sky and the water and my voice. I don’t know why but every day I have it in my life and it makes me happier. #allbluueverything and yes I spelled it bluu. AM! It’s the sound people hear in action movies when the super hero hits the bad guy and saves the day. It is the sound we associate with action and excitement; but, to Brittney Michalchuk, this word means business. Michalchuk is the owner and operator of B.A.M. Marketing Solutions, a promotional company that offers promotional marketing services to its clients. This young and promising entrepreneur has proven to be a success at the tender age of 25. But despite all of her achievements, Brittney remains grounded and modest. Michalchuk is not only making a name for herself in the business world, but she has achieved an impressive online presence to further her company’s success. Chances are, if you use social-media, you probably already know her. With thousands of friends and followers, many would consider her a social media celebrity. But she isn’t using Facebook for just fame and stardom. To her, social media is way to do business and make a difference.
“Facebook helps me market myself and connect with clients and the community,” says Michalchuk. “People are the most important part of my business . . . I love that I get to be my own boss and contribute to something bigger.” Her daily Facebook posts let her compassion and determination shine through. She’s not afraid to use the online platform to talk about issues close to her heart. As a child, she was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and was teased for her learning difficulties throughout high school. Though growing up with it wasn’t always easy, she now views this disability as an advantage. “ADD allows me to handle the many responsibilities that come with running my business,” she says. “I choose to see it in a positive way, I have lots of energy and I can juggle so many different things.” Her position as a role model is one she’s found especially meaningful, because her personal philosophy is to “be the person I needed growing up.” She believes that keeping a positive attitude and frame of mind has been the key to her success, and is aware that challenges are a natural part of everyone’s life. Michalchuk wants young girls to know that “bullying has nothing to do with them and everything to do with the bully” and that “these girls are never alone.” Since setting up the business in 2009, she has hired 1,200 contract workers and developed an impressive roster of clients across Canada. B.A.M.’s marketing representatives aim to enhance public awareness of a variety of products during trade shows and private functions. Michalchuk has taken this form of marketing, which has been around for decades, with a new approach. When hiring, she takes
a lot more into consideration than just the applicant’s looks. “My models not only have pretty faces but also pretty minds,” she says. “It isn’t like traditional marketing, where you have models on billboards; these girls are interacting with consumers.” She wants her models to represent the products in a thoughtful, meaningful way. This is why she hires university or college students. Education is important to Michalchuk; whom recently graduated from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. She explains that she started the company as a way to get experience in the finance industry. As the business grew, so did her passion, she adds. Michalchuk values hard work, kindness and intelligence—but she also believes in passion. She says passion is the reason she gets up in the morning. She is constantly looking for opportunities to grow- not only as an entrepreneur, but as a woman. Michalchuk believes that “challenges are just a way for you to become a better person.” To her it’s all about a positive mind frame. She defines success in ways other than money. To her, happiness is her family and her health. Her grandfather was recently diagnosed with cancer, and she says, “no amount of money will ever mean as much as him.” When asked how she deals with this difficult situation she explains that it by never taking anything for granted. “I surround myself with people that love and support me and I am grateful for everything I have,” she praises. When things become difficult, she makes a list of things that she is grateful for in her life to stay on track. Though she values her business, her vehicle and her apartment, her family and health are at the top of her list. Michalchuk believes that she wouldn’t be where she is today without the support of her family. She runs B.A.M. with her family in mind and she says that, “every day is a chance to make them proud.” standoutpublications.com / Summer 2015

“THE BEST WAY TO GROW AS A BUSINESS (IS) TO LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR OWN.” Royals Management will provide new and upcoming models with the skill sets and knowledge to pave the way of success within the industry by professional training and seminars from experts within the expansive market. “A major project we are especially proud of was, the privilege of having Matthew Stephan Smith, a contestant from America’s Next Top Model, come teach a private model workshop with our models who are, majority, completely new to the industry,” Jimenez said. “The models were thrilled and loved having someone who is making a [major] name for himself in the industry, come teach and give the them tips and insight of the modeling world. “It was an amazing experience and Royals Management loved having Matthew come to Calgary for the first time because our team.” In staying unique to its’ brand, Royals Management’s design concept was influenced by the famous fashion designer, Gianni Versace, who said, “In the past, people were born royals. Nowadays, royalty comes from what you do.” “Hard work, dedication and unwavering passion is what pushes you through the fashion industry and that is our vision behind our [brand].” Royals Management has become Calgary’s most innovative agency in the local market and prides itself on the creative process of bringing awareness and exposure to how it represents its’ brand and models. “Royals Management is, without a doubt, becoming a small tight-knit family with our models and team, [helping create] a good foundation within the industry as a community,” Jimenez explained. “Being a boutique agency, focusing on each individual model and their strengths [rather] than an mass [quantity roaster], allows us to work with each and every single model personally to help improve and hone their skills. rom the sleek lines hugging every curve to the fine cues in the designs, the vehicles on display at the annual International Auto and Truck show were screaming for attention and excitement. Landing in Calgary, the exhibition had thousands of people attending to check out all of what the automakers in the world were offering to the public. Visitors of the exhibition utilized their digital zooms on their cameras, and optical zooms on their smart phones to snap the shots of their favorite luxury sport brand. Showcasing what most could only dream of owning, brands like Ferrari, Maserati, and Bentley displayed their luxury vehicles proudly within the boundaries of the red-velvet ropes. The battle to win over new loyalties is never ending, especially with consumers expecting the best when purchasing new vehicles. Automakers continue to push the limits in design, technologies, and features in hopes of gaining a new customer base, all the while retaining those customers who have been loyal to their brand for years. As expected, automakers brought their best to the showcase, revealing new concepts, redesigns, and their bestselling models. The market for automobiles today is producing at a rapid rate due to the forward advancement in technology. It is expected that most automobile companies should aim their focus towards redesigning and improving previous models in correspondence with consumer supply and demand. However, it is in my opinion that, while some companies went beyond expectations, others are falling behind in the evolution of the automobile. Let’s give it some gas and put the pedal to the metal. I will begin with Ford, as it continues to surprise the world by introducing innovative designs and technologies to their lineup. But the question is, when does something new become boring and old again? In 2006, Ford introduced a brand new mid-sized family car model, the Ford Fusion. The new innovative design was directed towards younger consumers with its’ sleek and edgy lines. Consumers could see that Ford, again, wanted to be the leader in their segment by providing high-quality interior features, fit and finish, and safety and technology. The Fusion quickly became a household name and allowed for exceptional growth for the brand. In 2009, the Ford Fusion underwent an exterior and interior upgrade to keep the model fresh and fun. Though the model was built on the same platform, the upgrade was welcomed from many customers. By 2013 Ford unveiled a brand new Fusion. In my opinion,
this mid-size car with an aggressive and sporty design became a winner. The luxury aspects of both the exterior and interior could relate to an older generation, but the sporty and aggressive options and add-ons communicated to the younger crowd. A gem was born. Since 2013 the Ford Fusion has become outdated as other brands are pushing the limits with their new and redesigned models. My hope is to see Ford announce a new or redesign model of this car that will push the limits of the modern design cues of the future. Like the Taurus’s flagship SHO trims, I hope Ford will catch on and bring this to the Fusion. I’d buy it. Moving forward, it was not my intention to single out Ford on their models as they have and continue to bring some of the world’s best vehicles to the market. I could have easily mentioned similar qualities of Nissan’s Altima or Maxima, which are beginning to look aged and outdated on the roads. The Ford Fusion was a prime example since it is one of my favourite, modern vehicles, which Ford has kept on the market for a long time. As Fords competitor, Chevrolet has introduced the industry’s first center side-impact airbag that protects and cushions the front seat passengers from collisions impacting the sides of the vehicle. In today’s vehicles, we are driving in a compartment filled with airbags with the reassurance that the vehicles safety features will be activated in case of an accident. As a new implement to vehicle safety, we will see these center sideimpact airbags becoming standard equipment in the making of future automobiles. I have to mention that technological safety has always been an interest of mine. I like seeing automobile companies inventing and coming up with new active safety systems that give drivers further confidence maneuvering our vehicles, especially in our Canadian winters. From the invention of the seatbelt to the dozens of safety features such as collision prevention, vehicles have become our bomb shelters on the roads, keeping all drivers and occupants safe. It is mind-blowing to think how rapid these safety features are being improved. I often wonder to myself, what will the automobile division come up with next? The Calgary International Auto and Truck show is one of the largest exhibitions in western Canada, showcasing the best of the brands we drive on the roads today. From the sleek new modern exteriors and interiors, the revolutionary advancement of the engine, and innovative safety features and technologies, the show brings thousands under one roof to see some of the “fastest, most advanced and expensive cars in the world.” standoutpublications.com / Summer 2015

he first thing you notice about Felipe Alberto is his demeanour and the confident way he carries himself. We met up with Felipe Alberto, Canada’s youngest rising Latin musician, to talk about his new album Alma del Ayer, which means – Yesterday’s Soul. Felipe is a dark handsome cultured man with Spanish flare. When he first strolled into 500 Cucina in Inglewood, Calgary for our meeting, we immediately noticed his intense eye contact as he came towards us. We were hooked right away! He had a suave and classy way about him that was instantly unforgettable. With his unique yet old-world style we could almost picture him on horseback, but instead he was wearing a long designer burnt orange tweed jacket with dress shirt and jeans. And yet, in the music video of his first single, he portrays a handsome Latin hero riding up on a horseback –every woman’s fantasy! When you see his music video, La Apañadora, you’ll know what we mean. Talking to him for a few minutes led to an enthralling conversation about why he recorded Alma del Ayer. Sipping an espresso and with a coy smile he described his family and childhood. We were swept into thoughts of an old and romantic way of life, reminiscent of the movie The Mask of Zorro, exported onto modern Canadian soil. Felipe was born in Canada and he grew up living between Canada, Peru, and Spain. His heritage is apparent at first glance. He now lives in Calgary and is truly one of the most interesting and captivating people we have interviewed. As we chatted he gave us a sneak peak of a final draft of his music video before its launch. The video was shot by L & C Style, a well-known Calgary based production company, and it is a one of a kind creation. Felipe, who wrote the video, explains that he wanted to produce something that seamlessly blends the modern world with the old music. “Young people are no longer drawn to this old sound. Without changing the musical style, I decided to change the vehicle of its presentation, to appeal to a younger crowd” he states. Before the song starts, there is a witty dialogue in English (subtitled in Spanish) between Felipe and his ladylove. There is then a split screen for a telephone call, with dialogue in Spanish. His rendition of La Apañadora, written decades ago by Peruvian composer Alicia Maguiña, shows off Felipe’s deep and beautiful singing voice, paired with syncopated guitar rhythms, percussion on cajon, and clapping. The result is simple and sensual warm tone reminiscent of a bygone era irresistible to anyone. His music video is a story woven between the modern and old worlds in which he ends up winning the heart of a lady. He had been searching for the perfect “look” in a woman, “a sweet and beautiful Mediterranean look,” he stated. He found her in Jill Maria Robinson, an up and coming talent from Romania. The two worked well together and have since become good friends. There was a crew of 7 people for the shoot and despite the November temperatures the crew made it through by putting on parkas between takes. Felipe shared that he couldn’t be happier about how the video came out. The story is very clear even for people who don’t speak Spanish.
Felipe is not your usual starving Artist/Musician. He holds a Master’s degree in medieval history and literature from the University of Toronto and a Juris Doctor degree by which he practices corporate and entertainment law. He has studied in Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Ireland. He is the only person we have ever met who reads Latin. This explains why he is so articulate and draws you in as he shares his story. He is an intellectual and thus sees things from many perspectives. He jokes and says that he sold his soul to pay the bills but his true love is in music and literature. There is an obvious passion within him to share his music and explain its rich history in a manner that touches the soul of any listener. For Felipe music is more than selling CDs – it is the vessel he uses as a cultural ambassador. For years Felipe wanted to record a CD in tribute to his Peruvian background. He finally began this project in 2013. His new CD has 10 tracks, which are in the genre of what is called Música Criolla. It’s a traditional sound from his grandfather’s generation, which he’s trying to bring it back into today’s world. While the visuals and presentation may be modern the sound remains as romantic and full of feeling as 100 years ago. He learned this sound as a boy spending countless hours with his father singing Latin American songs of the early 20th century and listening to old vinyl records. Enamoured with the legacy of Hispanic music, he taught himself guitar chords from an old songbook and learned strumming patterns from his uncles. In the summers, as a child, Felipe would go to Peru and spend his time with family in the city of Lima as well as the Andes Mountains of Chachapoyas. He has thus remained tied to the land. His earliest memory of playing music was clapping along and signing with his father and uncles, as they would sing and play guitar long into the night. As such his greatest musical influences remain his family. This young musician has been playing since he was 16 years old. As his appreciation for Latin guitar grew, so too did his desire to discover more. On his summer vacations he began to take guitar classes with Master Pepe Torres at his academy in Lima, Peru. There he began to better understand the interplay of the different sounds in traditional music, while appreciating stories and anecdotes of the composers and original singers of the songs he loved so much. In his first album, Alma del Ayer, Felipe hopes to offer a fresh take on Peruvian music while > (continued page 60) standoutpublications.com / Summer 2015

maintaining the the authenticity of the art form. Felipe says, “I think everybody is searching for their identity. Because I live in Canada I looked for something to hold onto and vindicate myself, that thing was this music.” Felipe comments, “Immigration is an interesting phenomenon. We live in a land of immigrants here in Canada, and for the second and subsequent generations of immigrants there is a tie to their ancestral land that often times remains. Moreover, such people become time capsules for the traditions their parents and grandparents held in the country of origin – traditions that are many times kept alive only in the land to which they are exported, simply because of nostalgia. Music is the best example. The history of any culture could be taught from the perspective of music. It is an imprint, the mirror image of the idiosyncrasy of a culture at the time it was created.” Beyond the scope of his family, some of his musical inspirations are artists like, Diego el Cigala for re-popularizing the old Latin-American songs that people were beginning to forget; Oscar Avilés and Pepe Torres for bringing Peruvian guitar styles to the world stage; and Carlos Gardel because of his unforgettable classic style. What’s important to Felipe is to build and preserve the legacy of culture, which is so close to his heart. He shares, “I don’t want this style to die. Playing and performing this kind of music is a life-style and recognition of a history that I don’t ever want to let go. My ancestors are there with me when I play.” Indeed, many of the props in the video are as authentic as they come: the hat, sashes, and shawl Robinson wears, are from Chachapoyas, and the horse bridle is belonged to father’s godfather. When we inquire into future projects he smiles and says, “For the moment I want to produce a few more videos for this album,” (we are told that there is already another one fully produced waiting to be launched). “In the long run” he states “I just want to keep singing old songs and to keep them alive. I would love to collaborate with more musicians and work on old songs from all across the Spanish speaking world.” Felipe launched Alma del Ayer on March 6th with an initial show in Saskatoon. In less than a month Pasache Music of New York noticed him. Felipe has just returned from the Big Apple where, on April 18th, along with several other Latin artists, including Manuel Donayre, two-time Latin Grammy nominated Jorge Pardo, Julio Andrade, and Alejandro Velásquez, he performed at Homenaje a Pasache, a tribute concert to Peruvian Música Criolla. His Calgary release party is June 27th 2015. Pasache Music will present it at Lolita’s Lounge in Inglewood, Calgary. Come to be transported to another place and time. His album Alma del Ayer is available on Amazon.com and iTunes!
