t’s the rush from designing and producing this creative magazine that got my team and I addicted. Every issue, we want to keep doing more so we want to make sure our readers always wanting more, to get their next creative “fix”. We are back after launching our first issue in May 2015. We have been growing and finding out way more talented local businesses to publish about. It is mindblowing as we realize how much contents there that needs to be covered, so we pushed it a bit further this issue, more saucier, professional and edgy. Empowerment for the local industry in Canada is important as we are going through changes in history as it gives Canada a chance to shift in the shopping business. We want to be there while it happens so we can publish all about Canada’s creative industry as there are so many talents out there that deserve to be published and exposed to the audience. Everyone is always learning about new things everyday, so why not provide this magazine? The magazine is also trying to encourage Canadians to support other local Canadian business that truly dedicate to the brand and their clients. The planet needs to be taken care of, local businesses needs its own bigger and affordable industry and that is what we’re here for.

ince we are a quarterly print publications, we have four shoots a year. Every cover includes local Canadian models, local Canadian designers and accessories with a creative background. We want our covers to be very creative, unique, yet simple and intriguing. On the morning of July 5th, 2015 at 11:30pm, everyone showed up at the location of Sophia Models Agency in Calgary on time and ready to go. It was one of the most challenging photo shoots we have executed because; 1) we had a few fall backs 2) capturing great looks from four models at the same time. We all loved the results because we were able to fit all four designers and two jewelry designers in a few different looks. Two male models wore 6 Street Clothing, Forge Apparel and the two female models wore Three Way Clothing and Cherry Chic Designs. Two talented jewelry designers, Coutukitsch and Dori Forever brought their gorgeous collections for us to work with and magic appeared. We collaborated with designers in Calgary who have the proper clothing/attire for our favorite Canadian weather during the “Indian Summer” phase in late September to early October. By then, our third issue will be ready to launch in November. Each of our cover makes sure local models pop, local clothing and jewelry pop in a very creative and unique way. It’s great exposure and a good selling platform for entrepreneurs. We believe in showing all the talents out there in Canada. standoutpublications.com / Fall 2015

ransitional layered textiles, unique for the working woman by day and the socialite by night, KAZZ Clothing Inc. represents young professionals who share the love for “classic, yet chic, clean and contemporary style.” Canadian designer and owner of KAZZ Clothing, Ashley Kasdorf, began her creative path of clothing design in 2012 with a “focus on creating wearable, ready-to-wear designs for the urban modern woman.” “Fashioned around the idea of wardrobe fundamentals, KAZZ Clothing creates effortless, stylish clothes acting as beautiful pieces that people can wear day or night and as trends evolve,” Kasdorf explained. “KAZZ Clothing prides on being 100 per cent Canadian made.” With a post-secondary background in business marketing, Kasdorf continued her education in fashion design and merchandising. “I wanted to understand business from the creative side in order to start my own company,’ Kasdorf said. KAZZ clothing is designed, made and produced in Toronto, Ontario, highlighting the importance of staying purely Canadian for the client, who would “love to feature the garments.” “KAZZ stands out as an up and coming Canadian company in

askatchewan’s artistic industry continues to flourish with its multitude of talents from every corner of the creative community and has contributed to the premiere fashion and creative design event in that province. Saskatchewan Fashion Week (SFW) is an annual event showcasing the design and imaginative talents of the provincial industry that is becoming globally recognized. Public relations and communications manager of SFW, Melissa Fiacco, is excited to see the continued growth and expansion of the event as it continues “to influence the growth and sustainability of the creative industry.” “It’s been four years since Saskatchewan Fashion Week was created,” said Fiacco. “Saskatchewan Fashion Week was created to attract creative entrepreneurs and artists and showcase the talent being produced in Saskatchewan.” “We are seeing a continued retention of designers every year, while attracting emerging designers and designers who haven’t shown at Saskatchewan Fashion >

“Engaging a relationship with the Canadian Arts and Fashion awards has allowed us to produce and showcase Saskatchewan Fashion Week content on its website,” Fiacco said. “Live streaming on cafawards.ca, in addition to saskfashionweek.com, has amplified views of the runway.” “Live stream views of the runway program are currently more than 5,000 in 2015, which is an increase of 225 per cent from 2014.” SFW’s relationship with designers, ticket buyers, sponsors, makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers, committee members, and volunteers is integral to the success of SFW, as well as collaboration with all levels of government. “SFW is a non-profit organization and has built its successes using a strategic business model designed to increase sustainable revenue streams that can be reinvested into event production and talent attraction and retention. Investments from sponsors and funding partners have been very effective while creating mutual benefit.” Fiacco said.

“AN IMPORTANT PRIORITY FOR SFW IS TO INFLUENCE THE ECONOMIC IMPACT AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE FASHION AND CREATIVE DESIGN INDUSTRIES IN SASKATCHEWAN.”

“SFW does not rely on government funding to ensure its sustainability, but its relationships with governments is integral to addressing priority issues that influence policy and contribute to the fashion and creative design industries creating economic impact for the province.” Saskatchewan Fashion Week hosts a wide variety of credible and respectful brands, preserving the professional relationships between the creative teams, designers and sponsors, in ensuring the continued success and growth of the event. SFW is committed to creating “an inclusive experience that exposes and celebrates the artistic, entrepreneurial and creative talent & innovation being produced in Saskatchewan.” “SFW strives to create professional development and interactive experiences that foster collaborations and entrepreneurship.” — Mitch Wiebe standoutpublications.com / Fall 2015

STAMPEDE How the annual Calgary Stampede affects the city of Calgary’s fashion scene

E

very summer, in the month of July, the Calgary Stampede turns Calgary into a western themed party for 10 days. It is a great excuse to channel one’s inner cowboy and dress up! Looking back over the archives of Stampede past, there has been a huge shift in the way people dress for Stampede. I spent a day at the Stampede grounds and I must admit I saw some great outfits and others, not so great. Stampede time is also known for its partying, but sometimes what looks good at a party, is not so good in the daylight. The true cowboys and cowgirls looked picture perfect. They are there to compete on the infield, but they looked sharp and well put together off the field too. Real cowboys and girls wear Wrangler jeans. No low riding skinny jeans for this crew. This was the easiest way for me to determine the true cowboys from the wannabes. The First Nations were dressed so elegantly in their feathered leather costumes. It makes you see why the amazing outfits inspire designers such as D Squared. I loved how they incorporated bright neon colors in their dress. I noticed that the best-dressed people on the grounds were the people who were attending the rodeo. I sat out front of the Grandstand and the outfits were classic western, with a bit of a modern twist. Longer skirts for the ladies and classic plaid shirts for the men. Statement jewelry transformed a drab outfit into something western and on point. I have my Stampede outfit that comes out every year and is a great success. It is a pair of boot cut jeans, some Tony Lamas that I bought on a trip to Texas and a ‘cowboy’ shirt worn by the cowboys from the Camargue in France made by Souleiado and a classic wide brimmed Panama hat. — Lisa Kauffmann standoutpublications.com / Fall 2015

EMMA BLAKE

Emerging young Calgary fashion model shares what her day is like working for a runway show

PHOTOGRAPHY Mitch Wiebe & Zev Abosh EVENT #parkshow2015

7:00am

I open one eye and scroll through my Instagram feed as my mom asks if I want toast with my scrambled eggs.

8:15am

I leave my house now – no makeup and natural hair – looking like a normal teenager; just super tall and lanky of course.

9:00am

I arrive at the fitting with my earphones in and a book in my bag – I cannot stress how essential it is to have these things before going to a job. There are racks and racks of beautiful and unique clothing that I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to wear. Sadly, it is NOT true that the models get to keep the clothes.

9:30am-12:00pm

The Fitting: If it is a big show with a lot of models one must be prepared to stay for a while (this is why an iPod and a book is essential.) This is the part where talented designers – with whom I have been fortunate enough to work – call out my name and bring me over to their rack to dress me with clothes for the runway. I know that sometimes fashion can be a little out there – but as a model you cannot complain about what you wear. It is your job and even if it’s not your style, you have to be professional and wear it.

12:00pm- 3:00pm

The models get a few hours to take a break. If the job is close enough to my house I usually go home, eat, and maybe take a quick nap. If it’s not close to my house, I usually head out to find some food and find a quiet place to read or hang out with the other models.

TIPS ABOUT GETTING INTO THE BUSINESS

most creative, happy, and talented people I have ever met. I have had everything from dark eyebrows to no eyebrows. I always feel so lucky to be able to be helping bring a vision to life.

6 : 0 0 p m - 7 : 0 0 p m

Rehearsal: Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking, “Why do you have to rehearse walking down a straight ramp and then walking back up it.” Well it’s not quite as simple as that. First, you have the lineup, who is opening the show and who is closing the show. Then you have to walk at a certain speed, smiling or no smiling, it all depends on what the designer wants.

7:00pm-9:00pm

The Waiting Game: There’s usually a long wait time before you actually get to walk the runway. I am usually trying to catch up on homework, listening to music, or just talking to other models – that is definitely one of the best parts of this job. I have met girls from all over Canada the same age as me. A popular and surprising topic among models is mostly food and everything we are going to eat when we get home.

9:00pm-11:00pm

Show One: Now after all the build up and preparation, I finally get to walk the runway. I always become a bit nervous before I walk the runway because there are so many people there taking your picture every step of the way, but I just put it all behind me and look straightforward. The changes backstage are very quick. Naked models towering over their dressers, in a frenzy to get back to the lineup as quick as possible. There is a lot going on backstage (usually the air is thick with hairspray and clothing is everywhere) but it all pays off when you get to w a l k down the runway.

11:00pm-12:00am Home Time: Now I put back on my not so fashionable clothing and go home. Once I get home the first things I do is take off my makeup and put on pajamas. Back to myself, I then scroll through Instagram once again and see if any pictures of the show were posted (the most exciting part.) I am very lucky to be able to do what I do and I appreciate all the hard work my agency and my parents do to help and support me. It wouldn’t be possible without them.

— Emma Blake

1

GET AN AGENT. You want to be serious about a modelling career? Find yourself an agent. Do your research on the local agencies that you want to contact. Find out their niche and if it fits with your goals. There are many types of models such as runway, commercial, lifestyle, plus sized and fitness. Once you have narrowed it down to a few agencies, contact them to set up an appointment. They may want you to send in some photos. If that is the case, these photos do not have to be professionally done. Simple snapshots are fine at this point.

2

AVOID MODELLING WEBSITES SUCH AS MODEL MAYHEM. There have been too many

nightmare stories of girls being duped, sexually assaulted etc: another reason why having an agent is important.

3

GROW A THICK SKIN. You will be judged on your looks 24/7 when you are in this business. Be prepared for rejection. The great Gisele almost didn’t make it until the late Alexander McQueen took a chance on her, and the rest is history. But remember, for every Gisele, there are thousands of struggling models. The competition is extremely tight nowadays and careers that used to last ten years have a shelf life of about five.

“Why do supermodels make millions? Because they are one in a million.” -Lisa Kauffmann, Director of LK Model Management and Calgary’s Original Supermodel.

TRASHION FASHION Canadian company that transforms trash into fashion

B

orn out of a passion for the planet, Trashion Fashion, an internationally recognized brand, was founded by Amy Merli in 2011. Trashion Fashion is on a mission to change the way the world views its waste by creating an avenue for students and professional designers to repurpose waste into creative works of art that would have otherwise become trash. Since its inception, the organization has expanded into three major cities in North America, spreading and creating awareness. The name of the brand literally explains how the designs are made. Designers who decide to participate in any of the Trashion Fashion events have to follow a strict guideline of using 90% waste materials in all of their creations. Some of the materials used in the designs include but are not limited to; parking tickets, soda cans, trampoline, window screens, newspapers, magazines, and plastic bags. The brand is greatly inspired by the ballet community. The elegance and beauty of ballet is used to empower women through a sense of strong-bodied and nonsexualized images by the use of media to convey their message. In such a short amount of time Trashion Fashion has accomplished a lot by not only creating sustainability and reducing the impact of waste on the environment, but by also creating a creative outlet for youth of different backgrounds in the community to express themselves. They provide scholarship funds to students from a percentage of their ticket sales and have created educational programs for youth which has shown a significant influence in their academic involvement. >

Trashion Fashion not only wants to help bridge the world to a sustainable future, but also to engage communities in rethinking their choices when it comes to fashion.

TRASHION EMPHASISES THEIR STRONG BELIEF IN EMPOWERING STUDENTS, ARTISTS AND THEIR AUDIENCE TO FIND AND CREATE SOLUTIONS THAT CAN ALSO REDUCE WASTE AND IT’S IMPACT ON THE PLANET. An organization that prides itself in setting an example, Trashion Fashion events uses zero waste – and in an effort to leave each community greener than ever – Trashion also donates hundreds of seedlings and plants to the community. When working with clients, Trashion Fashion aligns themselves with clients who not only understand the power behind creativity, but is also passionate about the environment. They seek organization that they can partner with to support their education programs as well as eco-conscious brands. Trashion fashion has a mission to make the environment a better place by providing a creative outlet for communities, the fashion industry, and youth. Regardless of their international reach, Trashion Fashion still strives to have a localized impact on each community that they work with individually. Giving back to the community is of great importance to Trashion Fashion, and their goal for the future is to continue to grow their seedling and planting project in the communities that they work in as well as creating more educational scholarships for students. STANDOUT 2015 - PHOTOGRAPHY & ART GALLERY

I

began creating photographs as an art form after graduating from the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts Digital Photography Program in March 2012. I have since shifted my photographic practice from a digital to an analog process using a traditional large format view camera. My motivation came from a profound need to connect more deeply to the process and to my subjects. My artistic intention is to create images that evoke a deep sense of emotionality and timeless sensibility. My work is heavily influenced by my concurrent profession as a Medical Social Worker on the Critical Care Team at the Foothills Hospital. I work directly with patients and their families who find themselves often in utter crisis stemming from sudden and unexpected illnesses and physical traumas (car accidents, shootings, and stabbings for example) that sadly often lead to severe injury or death. We now live in a time when everything around us is moving so quickly that, as a direct result, many people miss or overlook the importance of being ‘present’ to people and things around us. As an artist, I seek to create images that engage the viewer and offer the time and space for reflection, contemplation and solltude.

odernizing business communities with original marketing methods, graphic design from Montreal based studio Cavallo Design, has helped enhance the successes of its clients with its unique take on brand development and communications. Sandy Cavallo, owner and operator of the boutique design studio, hosts a high-end portfolio of work that has focused in the area of visual branding, communications and social media presence. Additionally, Cavallo Design specializes in individual marketing material with their extensive À La Carte options for anyone looking for business cards, invitations, banners and more. As a young and well-established company, Cavallo had thrown herself “headfirst into establishing a reputable design studio” seven years ago with success on her mind. “Throughout the past seven years, I have built a solid client base through customer relationships and word of mouth,” Cavallo said. “I have been fortunate to develop relationships with clients who not only understand and appreciate my designs, but are also buzzing about Cavallo Design.” As each aspect of building a brand and company is, Cavallo used her last name to establish the business with a meaning that goes beyond her roots. >

“Cavallo is the Italian translation for ‘horse’; a spiritual animal that represents personal drive, passion and freedom,” Cavallo explained. “These are qualities that are reflective of me as an artist and have given me the ability to create strong, elegant, bold and simple art work.” As the sole employee of the design studio, Cavallo must standout from the competition and provide world-class work. “The challenge of being a boutique shop is earning the trust of clients,” Cavallo said. “To do so, one must weed out the bargain hunters and educate people on the value of time and skills that go into artistic work.” Building her brand and company as an individual can prove difficult, but Cavallo sees a lot of benefit in doing so. “I work very closely with them every step of the way, which is very important as it allows me to properly connect with my client and helps myself and them to understand what exactly they are looking for.”

“STAYING SMALL GIVES ME A COMPETITIVE EDGE AS IT ALLOWS ME TO HAVE PERSONAL BONDS WITH MY CLIENTS AND PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THEIR EVERY NEED AND DESIRE,” CAVALLO SAID. “THIS IS WHY I HAVE RECURRENT CLIENTS THAT ALSO SPREAD THE WORD TO OTHERS.” Cavallo Design will continue to grow, providing clients with unique work and marketing solutions to improve brand and company recognition by its “commitment to quality and simplicity” that makes it stand out. “Whether it’s reviving old store signs or helping a local merchant market itself, it is my mission to give back through my work,” Cavallo said. “It is a form of social entrepreneurship that takes the capitalism out of my work.” — Mitch Wiebe standoutpublications.com / Fall 2015

ART MAKEUP THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

ike the canvas is to a painter, the human face lends itself to the creative abilities of a makeup artist. As a blank slate, curvature, face structure and eyes allow for originality to bloom from the delicate strokes of the brush with a precise finger and eye. Internationally renowned makeup artist, Debra Kelly, was born in Melbourne, Australia and has worked globally with a large portfolio of teams and celebrities, creating eye-catching and dynamic art on the clients she has worked with. After moving to Calgary, Kelly’s skill for the art and precision for perfection catapulted her talent to a commodity needed in the community. “Since moving to Calgary three years ago, I soon realized my skill to transform others was a valuable tool,” Kelly said. “There were no restrictions and I could express my art in any way, shape or form.” “I learned very quickly that I possessed two key ingredients; the love for makeup and a natural free flowing creative flare that had the power to communicate to others.” Working with international models such as Mathew Stephen Smith from America’s Next Top Model, Kelly’s worldwide experience has proved a sought-after talent within the industry. Locally, Kelly has planned and orchestrated many unique photographic sessions with a professional team of photographers, models, videographers and stylists. Being inspired by new innovative products, Kelly “purchased Kryolan UV Glow makeup whilst back in Melbourne, Australia” and begun her creative journey in developing a high-end editorial photo shoot with makeup that glowed in the dark. Her team and ideas quickly developed into a professional group of talent. “I prepared my mood board with pictures that inspired me and asked Greg Gerla, a commercial and fine art photographer and instructor at the Alberta College of Art and Design, to help me out,” Kelly said. “Working with Greg is like working with an extension of my own creative soul and he helps my visions and ideas comes to life. “Greg is incredibly skilled at his art with years of experience and exceptional technical ability.” Calgary based model, Mitch Wiebe of Edge Agency in Regina, Saskatchewan, was taken on board to be apart of the creatively inspiring photo shoot. “I met my subject, Mitch Wiebe, briefly two years ago and we never really spoke,” Kelly said. “But I always was intrigued by his bone structure and piercing blue eyes.” “For me, it was a no-brainer to have him on board. “My team was complete and the ‘Terrible-Three’ hooked up to create visually appealing images.” The five-hour shoot allowed for the entire team to proactively photograph the theme in stages by adding small amounts of perfectly applied ultra-violet makeup on the subject. Each new application allowed for more compositional play by the model and photographer to attain the perfect image.

“I DID HAVE MY OWN PERSONAL CHALLENGES WITH WORKING WITH ULTRA VIOLET MAKE UP ON THE SUBJECT.” KELLY SAID. “BUT ONCE ONE UNDERSTANDS IT, THE REAL MAGIC STARTS AND I THINK COLLECTIVELY, WE ACHIEVED WHAT WE WANTED.” standoutpublications.com / Fall 2015

ART MAKEUP THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

“It was a free flowing, easy shoot.” With the efforts and open collaboration from the entire team, each individual worked hard with one and other to promote and succeed at the shoot. “Mitch was a real trooper, putting up with me splashing him with layers of makeup and he went above and beyond to work with me to do whatever it took to create the best possible image,” Kelly said. “In front of the camera, he exploded with countless poses and I would not hesitate working with him again. “One word sums up Mitch; professional.” By the shoots end, the entire team saw a once blank canvas and idea become a beautifully original work of art through experimental trial and error. “The shoot was so much fun and somewhat messy, but exceeded my own expectations. “What is Debra Kelly Makeup? [It’s] anything you want it to be!” — Mitch Wiebe

nternationally awarded makeup artist and expert, Sara Lindsay of Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio has worked around the globe with celebrity clients and events with an edgy and modern makeup application technique. With 14 years of experience, Sara has worked with clients such as Carly Rae Jepsen, Tegan & Sara, and The Canadian Tenors, as well as being apart of makeup teams in New York Fashion Week, Canadian Country Music Awards, The Juno Awards and more locally as the makeup coordinator for Saskatchewan Fashion Week. Sara worked in the fashion industry in the United Kingdom for eight years before returning back to her hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan where she currently resides, building her brand and clients in her high-end retail studio. “We are a full retail store offering high-end luxury cosmetics, hair care, skin care, nail products, as well as jewelry and a watch line,” Lindsay said. “We offer full make up services as well as hair, gel polish manicures & pedicures and lash extensions.” Saskatchewan’s creative industry is a close-knit community of talents that is very inclusive to all artists supporting each other to build it. Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio knows that “supporting others in the industry will only build the strength of business and peers.” “We foster a very progressive attitude where competition is concerned,” Lindsay said. “A negative attitude toward competing business is a very old fashioned way of thinking and isn’t part of our mission. “Fostering the idea of community support, Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio is “active in the community in the way of fundraisers and charitable fashion shows”, adopting policies within the company that has made it a core value. We are privileged to be able to get involved in supporting great causes and to me, that is one of the our most important accomplishments,” explained Lindsay. The passion for her guests has been a crucial part in building the brand, and she is passionate about creating an exceptional experience at Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio.

As with anything one sees in the fashion and entertainment world, what you see is not exactly what is really going on. The backlash against Amber on social media was rampant and all out mean. The bullying that Amber endured was extremely hard on her, so much so that she lost over 50 pounds in 3 months from the stress. The public thought that what her ‘character’ was on the show was who she really was. Paparazzi and Internet trolls became a harsh reality for Amber. It was only after the last episode aired, that she was ‘free’ from the constraints of the show and was able to show the public her true self. Life on the Bachelor was not a bed of roses. — Lisa Kauffmann PRESS & MEDIA COVERAGES

WHAT TURNS YOU ON CREATIVELY, SPIRITUALLY OR EMOTIONALLY? MY CREATIVE MIND GETS IN TUNE WITH MY EMOTIONS, SPIRITUALITY, AND SOUL WHEN I’M IN A BASIC SPACE – CLEAN, CRISP, NATURAL LIGHT, SECLUDED, AND I HAVE TO HAVE THE SMELL OF LAVENDER IN THE AIR. YES, I’M VERY OCD ABOUT GETTING IN MY ZEN ZONE.

MEDIA WOMEN AND TELEVISION

I

had the opportunity to sit down with Amber Gelinas for a coffee in Inglewood. I had already spoken to her a few days earlier, interviewing her over the phone about her experiences and insight on being on the Bachelor in Australia. Our coffee meeting allowed me to really get to know her better than any phone interview. After stumbling to find each other at the Gravity Cafe and Wine Bar in Inglewood, I sat down with my coffee and had a great conversation with a very funny outspoken woman. Born in Saskatchewan, Amber is 27 years old and stands a statuesque 5’10” tall. She is an actress, model and writer. One of the first things I told her was that she reminded me of Tina Carrera (of Wayne’s World fame) and a smidge of Chrissy Teigan. Depending on the light and angles, she can look anything from a First Nations, to a Bollywood actress, to someone from Indonesia or even Middle Eastern. Her chameleonic look is what makes her extremely beautiful, and as an actress and model, works in her favor. We continued our discussion from the interview and had a good laugh about the craziness of the fashion and tv world. Her insights into the ‘behind the scenes’ of the Bachelor were quite eye opening. When Amber applied and ultimately was accepted onto the Bachelor Australia, someone had told her that her life as she knew it, was going to change forever. Competing for the affections of a complete stranger with a group of other women makes for some interesting television and the Bachelor has its moments of high drama. Confidentiality agreements had to be signed, and Amber could not even let on to her closest friends and family that she had been accepted on to the show. Everything was very secretive and Amber basically had to go into pre production hiding. Because the Bachelor is filmed and edited months earlier, the participants have to stay quiet until the show airs all the way until the finale. Being on the Bachelor was not all what it appears to be on television to its millions of viewers. When I asked if it is real, Amber said that it is ‘actuality’ and not reality. It is not scripted, but it is what is known as ‘line fed’; the producers will set up situations to engage interaction between the girls and everyone plays a certain ‘role’ and has their own ‘story line’. So, for example, if two girls have not been asked out on a ‘date’ with the Bachelor, the producers will set things up for these two girls to talk about how they feel about not being asked on the date and their opinions of the girl who was asked out. Amber was considered the strong and outspoken girl. After spending some time with her, I saw a very driven, passionate and direct, no BS kind of girl. Amber wears her heart on your sleeve. So you can imagine how a headstrong woman would translate through clever editing on the Bachelor.

The lines between male and female styling are being flirted with all the time, yet, that’s exactly what the most important distinction is – the lines. MUSIC, SOUND AND TECHNOLOGY

SOUND PRIORY Recording studio vibrating in the Calgary music industry PHOTOGRAPHY Mitch Wiebe

T

The natural ability to hear and feel sound is a sensation that many of us take for granted. A fine-tuned ear has become a staple of creative design in music production, advertising, television, and the simple pleasure of our own experiences. Often overlooked, sound mixing and recording is a hidden creative art within a very inclusive community of artisans. In addition, sound is the primary way we, as humans, communicate, allowing our own imagination to build stories and descriptions through pitch and tone, all the while stimulating our ears. Calgary based recording studio and production house, The Sound Priory, has been making waves in sound development and mixing since it was established in 2013. Comprised of a triple threat team - Kirill Telichev, Ashtyn Beaudette and Kaitlin Gibson, the three use their professional education and knowledge of the music scene to make their brand known in Calgary and across Canada. “The space is becoming a very popular choice for musicians and corporate clients alike,” said Telichev. With the expansive array of high-end and professional grade equipment, the massive soundboard looks like a Boeing 747 cockpit with its’ hundreds of dials, blinking LEDs and software screens that highlight the growing portfolio the team has succeeded with and established already today. “The studio [has] racked up an impressive record credit list such as The Dudes, The Rumble and Highkicks,” Telichev said. “We have worked with national and international brands PHOTOGRAPHY Megan Steinwand ARTICLE Mitch Wiebe such as Nissan, Infiniti, Bank of Montreal and Calgary Stampede, MAKEUP/HAIR Jasmine Hodinski developing MODEL Alana (Mode Models, Edmonton) a solid sound-design portfolio.” >

The world-class recording studio features a variety of the latest “digital front end by Avid in combination with “more vintage sounding pieces by Universal Audio, API and SSL.” An extremely competitive creative industry has allowed Sound Priory to invest in staying current with its’ recording methods and standout in the recording industry. “Staying relevant in terms of digital technology is important,” Telichev said. “We want to provide a relaxed, inspiring environment for creating.” “We are lucky to operate out of a unique sounding room, so that the records that get made here, don’t sound boring or cookiecutter.

“MUSIC PRODUCTION AND POST PRODUCTION INTERESTS US THE MOST, IT’S IMPORTANT TO STAY DIVERSE IN AUDIO AND THOSE TWO AREAS ARE WHERE WE’RE THE HAPPIEST WORKING AND HAVE HAD THE MOST SUCCESS.” Working with multitude of diverse clients, Telichev says “someone with equal parts talent, drive, vision and openmindedness” produce success for both parties.

INSIDE THE STUDIO

Ongoing accomplishments for the team include producing albums for ATB Alberta Songwriting contest winner and four “Xposure winners with X92.9” such as The Suppliers and Go for the Eye. Sound Priory’s team dedication has opened up the doors to a very inclusive music industry that will bring further success and significance to their brand. “There isn’t a single project that stands out as a main accomplishment thus far, but rather, continuously doing exciting projects with both music and post-production sectors is definitely something we are proud of,” Telichev said. “We work on projects that we get excited about and I think it makes the final product that much better.” — Mitch Wiebe

TIPS & TOOLS It’s important to have and learn when breaking into the creative industry.

TOP TIP When I first decided to go freelance, I started working with some experienced wedding/ lifestyle photographers as their second shooter and assistant. I was fortunate to be able to learn bits and pieces of their individual workflow, which corresponded to their unique styles. I was eventually able to put it all together in a way that fit my own style, and I finally had the confidence to start booking my own clients. Throughout my learning process, my portfolio naturally started getting bigger and better, which brought in even more clients, along with word of mouth. SECRET TOOL Treat your clients as your friends. Start conversations, make a joke or two, make them feel comfortable and have fun. Be sure that your clients are not just getting the end result of beautiful pictures, but a genuine experience of making memories in a good atmosphere, as it will show in the end shots.

TOP TIP Persistence and self-belief. The reason why I combine the two is because they do not fully exist without the other you need to believe in yourself in order to be persistent and you also need persistence to maintain the self belief even when things get rocky. It gets hard sometimes but if you believe in that you have something unique to offer, keep pushing, keep calling, keep asking, keep considering options and keep saying yes even if it seems small. SECRET TOOL I use this tool the most when shooting at home - the panoramic head attachment which allows me to create very detailed and incredibly large photographs, whether panoramas or other formats. It is hard to use when shooting a quick moving object but not impossible once a shot was composed and planned for. You just have to be stable, fast and committed!

TOP TIP As a visual artist, I aspire to cultivate emotion, to stimulate and evoke sentiment. It is not a matter of how expensive your equipmernt is...everyone has the ability to take a picture. To truly stand apart from others within the industry, one must not only take quality images but to inspire an audience to leave them wanting more. SECRET TOOL I approach each shoot as a story...a yet unwritten account of human connection. I prefer to embark without expecation and to let the art unravel. Spontaneity reigns the early stages of my creativity along with desire to accomplish something special. I come away from each shoot with a greater sense of clarity and renewed insight. Inspired and exhilarated by our shared energy and connection.

ood talent is everywhere, but great talent can be found in those who are able to push the boundaries of their own creative outlets. Teams who have the ability to work together in collaboration tend to exceed their own expectations on projects and prove that they standout in a highly competitive artistic industry. Kevin Nakonechny of NAKA Photography is a fulltime, specialized fashion and lifestyle portrait photographer based out of Calgary, Alberta. With his unique eye and original views, Nakonechny is ready to stand out despite being new to the fashion scene. “I find it tough to ‘break-through’ to the next level in the genre,” Nakonechny says. “I’m working on building more connections and advancing my work. There is a growing scene emerging in Calgary and I’m confident that if I stick to [fashion photography], I’ll be able to grow alongside that movement.” Nakonechny is collaborating with his wife on a unique series called Alberta: Beauty Within. It is a magical and dreamy portrait project using the tranquility of ballerinas against iconic Alberta landscapes to act as the visual symbols of art. Nakonechny explained, “The whole thing started as a discussion on how we could showcase Alberta in a positive light and change perceptions; and with that, the project was born. It made us really revisit our own thoughts about Alberta and truthfully, it wasn’t until this project that I discovered all the great things going on right under my nose.” Understanding that the photographic and creative industry is competitive, Nakonechny uses that knowledge as a constant source of motivation to innovate and improve his work. By staying current and on trend with his fashion-style photography, NAKA Photography’s philosophy is based on the beliefs that knowledge sharing and collaboration will help each creative artisan succeed. “Whether it’s revealing a great shoot location or sharing the ‘secret’ editing technique, I think having this open mentality will help grow a larger network,” Nakonechny explained. “Down the road, this can lead to interesting new paths and opportunities that one wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.” As NAKA Photography pushes the boundaries of creative art, Nakonechny continues to strive for the better – building his name and brand within the fashion photography community in Calgary. “I think NAKA Photography stands out by staying true to my own vision,” Nakonechny explains. “As one grows and evolves, the style will be refined and before we know it, our work will become a source of inspiration for others.” — Mitch Wiebe
