he Mercedes Benz Start-Up Fashion Show is an event that upcoming designers living in Canada dream of participating in as it showcases the top Canadian designers on a national and international level. For the second time around, this exceptional event came to Calgary to choose a designer that will walk their winning collection at the World MasterCard Fashion Week, held in Toronto later this fall. Upon arriving at the fashion show, individuals are instantaneously drawn into the crowd of industry professionals that united here in Calgary. Emotions and excitement were running high as this event was sure to make a lasting impression on everyone attending. While photographers, models, and industry gurus mingled and admired the newly renovated Mercedes Benz in downtown Calgary, the top five designers were preparing for what could be a career changing night. Designers lined up for the runway on the night of the Mercedes Benz Start Up Fashion Show were: House of Nonie by Nina Kharey Nikki Babie Designs Inc. by Nikki Babie (photo on opposite page) Kazz Clothing by Ashley Kasdorf S.P Badu by Spencer Badu Aniimisism by Cassie Dee The five designers walked their one-of-a-kind Fall & Winter 2015 collections in front of highly recognized judges: Carolyn Quinn – Director of Fashion for IMG Canada, JoAnne Caza – Director of Communications and PR for Mercedes-Benz, Robin Kay – Founder of Toronto Fashion Week and President of the Fashion Design Council of Canada, Caroline Gault – Alberta Editor for FASHION Magazine, and last but not least Kara Chomistek – President of PARK (Promoting Artists Redefining Kulture). These judges, with their extensive experience and knowledge in the Canadian Fashion Industry were selecting the finest designer when judging the semi-final show. First, House of Nonie was working the runway with looks that incorporated a classic look with a stunning twist in each piece; this collection became a prominent fan favorite of the night. Nikki Babie Designs followed and all admired the interchangeability of the collection. Kazz clothing was up next and it displayed a collection that was unlike the others by creating the ultimate “boyfriend” look. Afterwards was S.P Badu, his collection was completely gender-neutral and perfect for anyone and everyone. Aniimisism took to the catwalk and presented a bohemian take on a fall/winter collection by using light fabrics and dark colors. All of these semi-finalists had an extremely different take on their perfect Fall/Winter 2015 Collection. With the amount of versatility that walked the runway at the fashion show, the judges were in for a hard decision. The decision came and the winner of the semi-final Mercedes Benz Start-Up Fashion Show was S.P Badu. The designs exhibited in his clothing and the originality of the gender-neutral line of S.P Badu’s Fall & winter 2015 Collection were notably fashion forward and perfect for everyone. — Ashley Resch
