2023 Annual Report

Page 1

WELCOME

Hello and welcome to St. Andrew’s! I’m Jason T. Smith, Lead Pastor and Head of Staff here at the church. Thank you for taking a moment to go through our 2023 Annual Report.

As I look back on the previous year together, I’m filled with gratitude and anticipation. I’m incredibly grateful to God for his faithfulness toward His church here at St. Andrew’s. This congregation has been a beacon for our community and the world for 75 years, pointing people to Jesus. Through your gifts of time, talents, and resources, you also have been faithful as well in answering the call to participate in what God is doing in your life, and in our life and Mission together. I’m also filled with anticipation for what the future holds. Finishing 2023 strong has given us the opportunity to lean into God’s plans for St. Andrew’s, and so I invite you to prayerfully consider ways that you might step up to serve, and to help lead in new ways in the coming year.

2023 was an important year together as we solidified our Mission and Vision, giving us direction for years to come. We love our community and shape the culture by equipping every generation to follow Jesus. Get ready for an incredible year ahead as we live this Mission together, trusting our God who can do more than all we could ask, think, or imagine!

God bless,

We spent an incredible year together filled with so many inspiring, joyful, and impactful events, both large and small. From all-church events, like Sunday baptisms, weekend services, Fall Fest, Advent and Lent activities, and Together Night programming, to small group meet-ups, serve trips to Tecate and India, and connect group activities – life at St. Andrew's was full of friendship, fellowship, and fun. It is our prayer that 2024 will continue to bring growth and meaningful experiences that bring our church family together in Christ as we live out our mission as disciples in this great community.

PLUGGING IN

A

year of exponential digital growth.

2023 was full of online strides — including the launch of our new website. Our website is the front door to our church and invites newcomers to get a feel for the St. Andrew's weekend experience and beyond. The structure of the homepage is aimed at making it easy to watch the latest sermon videos, view the live streams of our Sunday services, explore upcoming events, learn more about our mission and values, and get connected to ministries all from the home page. In addition to our new website, we have seen huge growth in our social media presence through a shifted focus in inspirational content and sermon clips that are short and shareable. We look forward to seeing how we can continue to grow in these areas across all demographics the coming year as we continue sharing the mission of St. Andrew's through multiple digital platforms.

PRAISING GOD

Time in worship. Time together.

It is often said that worship is the heart of a church, and this rings particularly true at St. Andrew's. Our wonderful service and outreach efforts function as the hands and feet, while our discipleship initiatives represent the mind. Our worship maintains a steady beat, delivering the lifeblood of the Gospel, the sustaining oxygen of God's Word, and the fire of the Holy Spirit to the entire body. In 2023, our efforts invigorated us in a way we had never experienced before. One of the highlights in our worship services was Holy Week, a journey that ranged from the reflective Passover seder meal on Maundy Thursday to the solemn Good Friday service. The congregation was taken through the emotional spectrum, mirroring the transformative narrative of Holy Week, culminating in the triumphant celebration of Easter. Inspired by the beauty and impact of these services, we initiated quarterly nights of worship aligned with The Path discipleship curriculum.

This year, our Christmas concerts showcased the richness of our worship ministry, featuring Pastors Jason Smith and Dr. John Huffman as narrators, along with all the animals you would expect on that first Christmas night. With over 2,000 attendees, the concerts were a tremendous success.

Throughout the month, we organized Christmas activities after Sunday services, inviting the community to experience the St. Andrew’s family. Additionally, a Blue Christmas service was held to acknowledge and hold space for those grieving during the holiday season.

A defining moment of Christmas 2023 occurred when, due to a last-minute plumbing issue in the Sanctuary, we moved the Sunday worship services to Dierenfield Hall and the Plaza. Despite the inconvenience, the spirit on campus that morning was joyful and peaceful. The congregation, spanning generations, gathered on a sunny day in December to sing and pray together. It became a Christmas like no other, a testament to the St. Andrew’s congregation placing its hope in God rather than buildings, all guided by the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we enter 2024, our prayer is to draw even closer to God’s heart through worship. We aspire to make Jesus famous in our community and around the world, prioritizing love and honor for Him. Before the enchanting melodies of our church resonate, our deepest desire is to listen intently to the Holy Spirit.

Taking the Path. Together.

In 2023, we focused on two main objectives: studying the Bible and learning how to walk the path of discipleship together.

Each week, over 100 of the women of our church gathered on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings, and over 60 of the men met Tuesday or Wednesday mornings to study the Bible.

In the fall, we kicked off our 6-module discipleship curriculum called The Path. An average of 200 adults gathered each week for a large-group teaching and small-group discussion directly following the teaching. While the adults of St. Andrew’s like to come together to learn, we also just like to connect with each other. Women’s Ministry offered events like Coffee + Connect and an annual retreat, and the men offered a monthly

Saturday breakfast. Tribe came together every Wednesday morning, and this year we offered a new opportunity for moms on Wednesday evenings called “Thrive.”

We are always excited to welcome newcomers to the church. We loved offering our “Discover St. Andrew’s” class throughout the year, which is for our new members. This year, we met 73 new people through these classes.

We always seek to support the adults of St. Andrew’s in their growth in Christ. Another wonderful resource we began offering in 2023 is RightNow Media – an online resource of some of the best Bible and topical studies out there. Visit us online at sapres.org to gain acess to this vast library.

REACHING EVERY GENERATION

Families are the heart of our church.

In 2023, we focused on creating opportunities for families to come together. The year was marked by the blossoming of new friendships, deepening commitments to faith, and the expansion of our vibrant community. Our value of "being known” shaped a welcoming space where everyone, from the youngest to those young at heart, could find a place to belong.

Our Children's Ministry thrived with dynamic growth and joyful learning. The Preschool and Parent + Child class provided a nurturing entry into faith for 250 little ones, sparking curiosity and a sense of belonging. The excitement of VBS (Vacation Bible School) brought biblical stories to life, engaging over 400 children with creative and interactive activities. WATCH, our after-school program, extended our care and biblical teachings to over 100 children, nurturing their understanding of their cherished identity as sons and daughters of the King.

The Youth Ministry at St. Andrew's made significant strides in connecting with teenagers and addressing their unique needs. We cooked almost three thousand burgers for students at NHHS, served countless cups of coffee, and went on seven different overnight trips, aiming to connect with and invite students to personally know Jesus’ love. Our goal was to guide them in discovering their purpose and

identity in Christ, while also encouraging them to be active, positive contributors to the wider community. We also spent the year developing a brand-new confirmation series set to launch this spring.

For young adults and adults, our church offered a variety of small groups and connection-based gatherings. We had 101 small groups consistently meet, creating opportunities for deeper spiritual exploration, mutual support, and mentorship. Additionally, our Young Adults met every Tuesday night and brought 14 new volunteers into the church community.

Reflecting on this year at St. Andrew's, the numbers tell a story that's both heartwarming and encouraging. We are excited to better know the 258 people who joined us through our Next Steps process. We are thankful for each of the 159 members of our Sunday greeting team, who spread smiles and handshakes with love and warmth. We will not soon forget the 6,128 donuts devoured by our enthusiastic kids and youth - a testament to their joyous engagement on Sundays! We are truly honored to be part of each person’s and family unit’s journey and look forward to witnessing the personal and collective growth of our community throughout 2024.

LIFTING VOICES

Inspiration through education.

The year 2023 for the St. Andrew’s Creative Institute (SACI) was full of growth, fun, excitement, and promise. We saw immense growth in our SACI Sing program, led by director Gina Pierce. SACI Sing performed in both worship and concert settings and was the highlight of the SACI year for many. This group not only provides a musical outlet for younger musicians, but also serves as a robust feeder system for young instrumentalists to join the SACI program.

We have added two new instructors to teach beginning students: Julie Cons and Sinai Rodriguez. Julie, after graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in Music, now teaches our young ones. Sinai recently graduated from the OCSA Contemporary Music Conservatory and is now attending Vanguard University. Sinai also serves as pianist and worship leader for St. Andrew’s ministry partner Northeast of the Well.

Our summer kicked off with a worship weekend that bookended right into a fun week of Vacation Bible School. Our SACI students and instructors sang and danced alongside our worship team. July displayed

a bit of international flavor as our church hosted Guadalupe Cristina, an Argentine soprano, in a concert directed by SACI founder Joe Cristina. Guadalupe also provides weekly, classical vocal instruction for five of our young singers. Our program includes distance learning between the northern and southern hemispheres.

For the second year in a row, SACI has provided musical support for the Women’s Retreat in Lake Arrowhead and the weeklong camp experience at Royal Family Kids Camp. Summer camp was followed up by a Thanksgiving Reunion at St. Andrew’s. Our students also helped provide support for the Wednesday night youth worship experiences in 2023.

The plan for 2024 is an ambitious roll-out of three new programs — SACI Dance, SACI Drama, and SACI Tech that will feature a more diverse sampling of the creative arts to our community. Our prayer is that SACI not only develops and instructs our youth at church, but also acts as a light and vehicle for the love of the Lord in embracing our neighborhood and world.

LOVING OUR COMMUNITY

Answering God's call to serve.

Growth. Fruitfulness. Gratitude. These are the words that come to mind when reflecting on how God has been moving in and through our congregants and ministry partners in 2023.

It has been encouraging to see ministry thriving and people re-engaging with missions and outreach this year. We have seen an increase of more than 20% of congregants serving and engaging with several of our ministry partners since 2019. We are encouraged by this because it reflects the echo in our hearts from Paul's prayer for the church in Colossae that the believers would "walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God..." (Col 1:9-10).

We introduced Vulnerable Children, Unreached People, and Shalom of the City as our focus areas in Missions and Outreach. As we serve alongside our partners, we rejoice in knowing the name of Jesus is being made great as young, old, feeble, poor, and wealthy alike, both locally and globally, are experiencing the love and hope found in Christ.

Together with our partners, we have reached thousands of vulnerable children, experienced the love and hope of Christ through our relational engagement at Royal Family Kids Camp, our foster kid Thanksgiving and Christmas events, and through the hundreds of toys, stockings, and needed items provided this Christmas.

Additionally, hundreds of homeless youth were blessed with thousands of bags of food and freshly baked cookies provided throughout the year. Hundreds of incarcerated youth found comfort and peace through weekly Bible studies, services, and one-on-one meetings.

Thousands of unreached people heard the Good News through our missionaries and mission trips to Mexico, India, France, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Kenya. Hundreds of children in India delighted in hearing about Jesus through the Bible lessons, skits, crafts, and games our India team brought to them.

We spread shalom in our city and beyond to thousands. St. Andrew’s hosted gatherings for hundreds of men and women throughout the year who are restoring their lives after addiction and looking for community, support, and hope. Thousands of homecooked meals were lovingly prepared and served to our guests to nourish the body and the soul. Over a thousand women enslaved in human trafficking were ministered to on the streets and in safe houses through our partners. Thousands of victims affected by the war in Ukraine, the Turkey/Syria earthquake, and the fire in Maui were provided safety, meals, and necessities.

Alongside the thousands and hundreds, we also rejoice in the ONE. One congregation in Newport Beach growing together to love and serve the One true God!

LOVING OUR COMMUNITY

Care is a verb.

Imagine our faith without the incarnation of Christ, or, trying to understand God’s love without the compassionate ministry of Jesus reflected in the Gospels. Throughout history, the hallmark of the Church has been the Gospel proclamation accompanied by the Gospel demonstration. The Gospel comes alive when the love of God is shown in practical and tangible ways.

Because of your faith-filled generosity, we have been able to graciously disperse over $100,000 in Care funds to those struggling in the trenches and in emergency situations. We have generously assisted individuals and families alike in over 70 situations. Warm meals have been delivered to families affected by illness or grief. More than 120 “blessing bags” have been delivered by our Deacon team to the most isolated members of our church family. One recipient had said, “Thank you for remembering me.” Another said, “Your love and warmth for sending so many caring cards, calls, and visits has meant a great deal to me.” These are just a few of the many comments we have received.

We know how impactful our weekend services have been to our church family. Rides to our weekend worship services have been provided for individuals without transportation. Through our “Fourscore and More” Ministry, great fellowship and engaging luncheons have been provided for our church family who are 80 and over. In addition, encouraging birthday cards and Christmas letters went out to over 400 members in our database last year.

With the help of our Deacons and Care Pastors, we have officiated, coordinated, and served over 43 memorials and receptions on our campus. Additionally, our pastors have officiated nearly 20 memorial services in other venues, including graveside services. Our Deacons, Care Team, and Staff have worked tirelessly to not only help honor the memory of our beloved brothers and sisters, but to also extend the peace of Christ to their grieving families. Our Grief Group Ministry has been able to provide support for 18 individuals – helping those living in the wake of loss and mourning.

Our Deacons and Care Team have continued to demonstrate the hands and feet of Jesus through over 500 home and hospital visitations, and by committing to one-onone visitation schedules for approximately 50 members of our church family on a regular basis. Our Pastoral Care team has made over 70 in personal hospital, rehab, and home visitations this year. And now with Pastor Emanuel David on board, we can continue to expand our vision and culture for our Care and Deacon Ministries at St. Andrew’s.

When joy becomes a habit, love becomes a reflex, and it is never stationary, it always acts. To that end, we thank you for showing your love by joyously partnering with us in our Care Ministries this past year. In the year to come, know that our Care Team, Pastors, and Deacons are available and committed to journeying with you through the different seasons of life. We are excited about all that the Lord is preparing us for in

BRINGING LOCAL FLAVOR

Serving up smiles in our neighborhood.

In 2023, the Corner Café introduced two new vendors, Crema and Greenlife Fit Foods. With them, we have created an incredible partnership. Crema’s artisan baked goods and Greenlife’s breakfast burritos and salads were a huge hit this year. Seeing more students, St. Andrew’s staff, and people from the neighborhood come in and enjoy the new food has been a sweet experience. The students we serve from Newport Harbor High School and Ensign Intermediate are definitely the highlight of our work. Our baristas love having the opportunity to get to know them and help them feel known on our campus.

The café has also expanded in the way we partner with other departments in the church. As we strive to be an intergenerational church that loves our community, we now provide coffee for VBS

volunteers and families in the summer. Additionally, we partner with our build and worship department by providing free coffee for families on Sundays in our Family Rooms. Our volunteers and baristas have been living into our goal of helping families feel seen and welcome. Greeting busy, young families with a (much needed) warm cup of coffee is pure joy.

We look forward to partnering in new ways in the coming year. We have noticed more families and individuals in our neighborhood have been walking over to the shop to grab coffee, unaware we are inside of a church. We are thankful for the few families who have started attending St. Andrew’s in 2023 after discovering the church through the Corner Café! A beautiful reminder what incredible potential our little café has to reach the community.

TREASURER'S REPORT

January - December 2023

THE CHURCH FINISHED THE YEAR WITH:

+ Contributions and tuitions income received of $ 8,268,479. (We are $ 383,995 above budget.)

+ Expenses of $ 8,020,764.

+ A net operating surplus of $ 247,715 (Yes, we have a surplus this year.)

+ Cash on hand of $ 4,405,784

As you may recall, in 2022, St. Andrew's accountants prepared and applied for Employment Retention Credits on our behalf. We recognized this income ($636,362.11) as Non-Operating Income in 2021, prior to our Audit of 2021 being complete. The ERC credits were earned in Q1 & Q2 of 2021. St. Andrew's received payment for $636,362.11 in Employment Retention Credits in 2023 which was applied to the receivable booked in 2021. There are no further Employment Retention Credits outstanding.

In early 2023, your session anticipated an increase in income and increased the 2023 budget by more than $ 798,009 which constituted a 11% increase in the budget over 2022. We met that goal this year. Our income has increased by over 22% since 2022. Praise be to God.

We anticipate an increase in giving for 2024 and, with God’s favor, remarkable times for St. Andrew's, our church family, and our community.

Respectfully submitted,

EXPLANATION OF MEETING MINUTES APPROVAL

As moderator, Jason explained how the previous minutes (as provided in the Annual Report) were reviewed and approved by the session. The agenda of the meeting was displayed along with other slides as the meeting progressed.

PASTOR’S REPORT

Jason highlighted that December 25, 2022, marked the 75th anniversary of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He also thanked his wife Jessica for her help as he began his new position as Lead Pastor. Many items were highlighted from the annual report, including the slide on the Covenant Members: 3,007; 15 new, 27 deceased, 2 corrections, and 2 transfers. End of year membership is 2,999.

Also, highlighted were an increase in the number of adults attending worship [Gather]. Associate Pastor Shannon Coon’s revamping of [Build] Bible studies/ classes, addition of Right Now Media for study resources, and use of Podcasts were highlighted. It was explained about the ratio of worshipping adults to students as the health of a church body and noted that ours is currently 900 adults/150 students > 5%. So many opportunities for [Serve] outreach, and our India team returning today. Expansion will occur for SALI and SACI (St. Andrew’s Leadership & Creative Institutes.) Lastly, prayer was highlighted as a priority and that all congregants will be encouraged to get involved in ImpActs 1:14 and other ways.

The budgets for 20192021 had been reduced each year and we were still off budget. However, 2022 budget was raised and we were only a little below. The slide showing the number of Givers and the amounts was highlighted as these have increased. The budget for 2023 was shown for the amount of $7,789,314.

QUESTIONS

A question was raised regarding the money

designated to be put into the reserves and the use of investment. A question was asked regarding the plans for the position of Associate Pastor, which was answered by Jason as being in the works (possible changes to the role, one to two positions, and assistant to associate pastor in ECO polity.) There was a concern about sufficient time to ask questions in the meeting. Jason indicated that, in the future, having only one service that morning should be considered. Lastly, a question was raised about continuing Bible study class(es) on Wednesday evenings.
