Dear Class of 2020, This is our book. As we embark on our journey outside of St. Andrew’s, we are not only gifted with a family from all across the world but also the memories that have shaped us these past four years. We hope you read and cherish these memories, and let this book be a testament of the good times we spent together and a reminder of the great people we aim to be in the future.

We would like to thank the Communications Team for their hard work in honoring the Class of 2020 in such a beautiful way. Thank you also to Mrs. Honsel and Mr. Robinson for inspiring us every single day with your leadership as class advisors. Your creativity and love for our class has shown in the energy you bring to everything. Among many others, we would love to thank Señora, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Visalli and Mr. Roach.

But most of all, thank you to the Class of 2020. Your love for St. Andrew’s, for us, and for one another is why we were truly blessed to represent you all this year. The memories we shared and the friendships we’ve built remind us that this is not the end but rather the beginning of our story with one another.

FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The volleyball

FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: One of the biggest

team. I came in as a new sophomore and my first days on campus were with the team during fall preseason.

Immediately I felt welcomed and supported by the group and throughout that first season we were able to create a really uplifting, competitive, and loving environment unlike any team I had played on before. Mistakes were okay to make but not to dwell on, success was celebrated, and we worked as a unit, as a family. Words can’t describe how much I treasure our time together.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I really miss spending time with people and living so close to all of my friends. I miss studying in the presence of others, walking from class to class together, sharing meals, and sitting in places like Chapel or Engelhard all together.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: The work of the Student Diversity Committee has been really powerful to me. It has taught me a lot about myself and my background but also about those different from my own. I view the world differently because of the work they have done and I really appreciate it.

highlights of my time at SAS has to be the wrestling team. I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined as a sophomore, but I discovered an environment that challenged me in a way I had never been before. Coach Davis and my teammates have made me into a tougher and more confident individual, and I am incredibly grateful for that.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: The thing I miss the most is staying up late with my roommates and friends. These late-night adventures, conversations, games, movies, debates, and the short films we made are the memories I will treasure the most.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Go outside. Explore the woods, the pond, the fields. Don’t be afraid to go out alone, but you’ll also be surprised at how many people will join you if you just ask.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS:

Enjoy, appreciate, and make the most of every moment while you are at St. Andrew's. There was so much that I "saved" for senior spring—I was too focused on the work I needed to get done or extracurricular committments. Don’t let yourself work all day on Sunday.

Be spontaneous. Explore the woods, treasure and make time to foster your friendships, and get to know the faculty and staff. Talk to them as they drive you places, in between classes, at lunch tables, and even ask them to coffee (especially the ones that haven’t taught or coached you). They have so much wisdom to share and are truly beautiful people.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I plan to work with the special needs community and hope to spread awareness in order to make the world a more accepting and loving place for them and for everyone. When we start to focus on ability instead of disability, love instead of hate, and actively practice kindness towards everyone, the world will be a better place for all of us.

Margaret Hartigan Ayres AKA Molly HOMETOWN: Charlottesville, Virginia FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: My favorite thing

to do at St. Andrew’s was sing in the Noxontones. I joined the group my sophomore year and it was something I looked forward to each week. It was my favorite activity because of the challenge it provided. Getting all the notes right and then blending them all together as a large group was so satisfying and a feeling that I didn’t find elsewhere at school. Being in Noxontones taught me to trust my peers and engage with people who I didn’t necessarily interact with otherwise. It was a huge learning experience and something that I already miss.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: There are so many things I miss about St. Andrew’s right now.

I miss my class, my friends, the campus, the pond, and every single spring activity. There is nothing like spring at St. Andrew’s. Spring defines the culture of the school.

The sense of community that St. Andrew’s provides would not be the same without the Front Lawn and the pond. In the spring, every weekend is an adventure, with activities like hiking the trails, swimming in the pond, camping, four square, exploring campus, and countless other things. There is really no way to describe why the spring is so special, but it completes the St. Andrew’s experience. Not being able to share all of the amazing events that spring holds with my class this year is for sure what I’m missing most about St. Andrew’s.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: To the underclassmen and future St. Andrew’s students, I would say to cherish the relationships you have with the faculty.

It is something that I definitely took for granted while I was at school. Most colleges do not offer the same intimate classroom setting and mentorship that our student-faculty dynamic provides. These relationships turned me into the person I am today. I would not have the resources and motivation that I have now if I hadn’t had the faculty at St. Andrew’s to guide me. These faculty are teachers, mentors, advisors, coaches, dorm parents, and role models, and they will continue to support you all throughout your life. Appreciate them while you are living on campus with them and it will make all the difference later.

Griffin Wayne Batson HOMETOWN: Quincy, Massachusetts WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss the everyday interactions I would have had with friends, teachers, dorm parents, and coaches. I miss the excitement, joy, and wisdom I gained from these conversations.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: This past year, I had the privilege of serving as one of the student coordinators of the mentoring program. It was enlightening to see just how much work goes into sending out the almost 150 students each week. The often unrecognized behind-thescenes work is worthwhile because I know that each and every student we send out is having a positive impact on their mentee. It is my hope that other St. Andrew’s students will undertake the role and feel the same sort of passion and satisfaction that I have enjoyed this year.

RECALL IN A DECADE: My relationships. The friendships I have made at St. Andrew’s will not disappear simply because we are not together. As Will Rob noted, we have so much to look forward to—“St. Andrew’s will not be the best time of your life or the best time with each other.” I have the rest of my life to continue to build and cherish these friendships, because they are the type that will persevere despite the fact that we are apart.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Enjoy every moment with your friends, take every opportunity you have, and make the most out of your time at SAS. Yes, I have heard this just as much as you have. However, I didn’t realize how true it was until our senior year was cut short. I would give anything to share one more dinner, one more School Meeting, one more class, one more practice together with all of you. Seize every moment you have at SAS, because you never know when it could be over.

Bogdana Bulakh AKA Dana HOMETOWN: Ukraine WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss

hanging out and going on adventures with my friends and living with my roommate Ava. RECALL IN A DECADE: I think the people will stick with me the most. They have definitely had the greatest impact on my life and I am so grateful for meeting every single one of them. I experienced living with my best friend and hanging out with my best friends every day after lights out—an amazing experience if you ask me.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I really hope no other seniors will have to miss out on their senior spring like our class did.

Logan Fields Cameron HOMETOWN: Middletown, Delaware FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Definitely soccer. I

thought coming in as a new sophomore would have been a difficult experience, but being able to go to preseason that fall calmed all of the nerves I had around school and what it would be like. The team level of commitment both to the sport and to each other was clear from my first step into the locker room, and the people on the soccer team are still some of the best friendships that I have made at SAS. WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss being on dorm, and the time we get to spend together after classes. When it’s a lovely day where I could be with the rest of the school on the Front Lawn, I know that we are all missing out on those moments. It is hard.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I think SAISL, for me, was terrific. For those who don’t know, SAISL is an indoor soccer league run by students for the whole school that spans throughout the winter term. The team of seniors and faculty put a lot of time and effort into it, which paid off in the end and allowed for a very entertaining season.

While it was initially a lot more work than I expected, it was truly amazing to see it all come into action during the final game—the faculty team were upset for the first time in years—and being able to contribute to that moment meant a lot to me.

Aliay Bernarda Chavez HOMETOWN: Bronx, New York FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: My favorite club

experience was probably the dinners we would have at Senora Ramirez’s house for Casa Latina. We tried to do it at least once every year and it was just a nice time to come together as if we were actually family. We would listen to music and just sit around and talk.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: The most powerful experience I’ve had at St. Andrew’s was hearing Richard Blanco talk.

Having a queer Latinx speaker come to SAS meant a lot to me since that wasn’t something that was normal growing up. Although it may sound cheesy, hearing his stories all throughout the day made me feel like I wasn’t alone in the things I had experienced in terms of being one of the only queer people within my family.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I think creating the Casa Latina dance is one of the projects I’m most proud of. I think it’s a great way to allow the larger community to see what’s important to us. My favorite part about it is that everyone is actually trying to learn salsa and having fun while doing it.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Try to talk to everyone. It’s really easy to get stuck in your own friend groups, but when you make the effort to get to know other people you’d be surprised by how much you learn from others.

William David Cook AKA Will HOMETOWN: Easton, Maryland FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Some of my

favorite memories are of late nights watching horror movies and talking with my roommates during my senior year.

RECALL IN A DECADE: The friendships and connections I have made are ones that will stick with me forever. They have taught me the value of community, and just how important it is in helping you feel like you belong.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Make sure to get out and immerse yourself in the campus and community around you. While it is easy to get caught up in your schoolwork, always try to take time to participate in all the fantastic opportunities and experiences provided to you at St. Andrew’s. Doing so will only enhance your experience and give you many great memories in the process.

FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: My favorite

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Spring Fling by

activity this year was Afternoon Dance. I had so much fun choreographing and bonding with my peers in the Cameron Room!

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss my roommate, Louise. We have been roommates for all four years. She has helped me overcome my greatest challenges, supported me through many ups and downs, and has been my best friend since the first day of freshman year. I also miss MDBD—best two years ever!

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Hispanic Heritage Month dance at St. Andrew’s has definitely had a huge impact on me, and the community as a whole.

From the planning, to the dancing, to the fundraising— that night holds a special place in my heart.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Community service has always been an essential aspect in my life. I started the Silver Lake Dance Mentoring program this year.

We worked with children ranging from 1st-5th grade, and we focused on having fun dancing while learning fundamental life principles. In addition, through Silver Lake and Adaptive Dance, I have been able to help others, promote fairness, and give others the opportunity to love dance as much as I do. I have become who I am today through programs like Adaptive Dance and Silver Lake Dance Mentoring.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: It’s always okay to take time for yourself in the hectic world of St. Andrew’s. When you take time to relax and replenish your spirit, you become the best version of yourself.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Never

lose sight of how lucky you are to be at SAS and you will have the best experience. Once you lose sight of that, it becomes hard to thrive.

Xueying Dai AKA Lucy HOMETOWN: Beijing, China WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: The

people, the campus and all its activities that bond people together. And definitely big announcements—such as Free Day announcements—that generate excitement.

Though we now have School Meeting online, it is still hard to feel the actual happiness and connection that you would feel in person. From 100% boarding to virtual terms, this is a complete change: not being able to see my classmates’ happy faces and enjoy dorm functions is so weird. I wish I could go back someday.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: I would say family-style lunch, since it was one of the traditions that brought the students and faculties together. Unlike some of my friends’ schools that have cafeteria lunch every day, at SAS we instead sit down like a family and discuss our day. The idea of this brings me deep warmth whenever I think of it. The tradition of family-style lunches unites all of us, and that is something that was really important to me as an international student, living far away from home.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: I used to be really impatient when it came to solving problems. From classes at St. Andrew’s, I realized that the discussion process is really important. Instead of throwing around concepts, we discussed our way out of each problem, and I discovered this is the most essential part of learning.

RECALL IN A DECADE: Definitely its people and the connection.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Warm, forgiving/ inclusive, respectful.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Don’t work too much—participate more in activities because you will miss these later. Try new things and you will be surprised to find something inspiring!

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: To come back to St. Andrew’s since this year didn’t end quite properly.

Messiah Tony De Sisso HOMETOWN: New York City, New York FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The basketball

team was my favorite because we were always like a family. Through the good and bad we always stuck together and had funny moments.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss being on dorm and being able to have that experience of checking the juniors in and talking to them before bed.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition is Super Bowl Sunday.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Seeing everyone out on the Front Lawn on the first day of school.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I started Brave Space which allowed the community to express their beliefs around a controversial topic while still being in a safe environment.

RECALL IN A DECADE: Because of SAS, I’ve learned that it is important to understand others' culture and lifestyle rather than just ignorantly judging them for their actions.

SAS taught me to always be mindful that my situation could be wildly different from someone else’s. After four years, I have learned to listen to the stories of other people and to see how these stories are different from mine so that I can better understand them. Because of SAS I’ve become more aware, and I will take this lesson with me for the rest of my life.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Kind, united, intelligent.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Enjoy your time at SAS. Allow yourself to be around new people and make new friends. Give your 110% to not only being a good student, but also to being a good person.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: My long-term hope is to be able to help everyone who got me to the place I am today.

Zijun Ding AKA Steven HOMETOWN: Beijing, China FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Boys varsity

soccer. The team felt like a family in which everyone cares and takes responsibility for each other.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Human interaction with teachers and friends at school, and the ability to work on music projects with my friends.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS memory was the state tournament soccer game we lost in my sophomore year, because I remember after I missed the penalties and indirectly lost the game, the seniors who had just played their last soccer game ever came to me and consoled me.

Lamar Khari Duncan HOMETOWN: Chester, Pennsylvania FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The 2019-2020

boys varsity basketball team was not only my favorite team at SAS, but our playoff run was also the most memorable period of my entire 18 years on earth. With our three playoff wins pre-COVID-19, we set the record for most wins in a season (17) and became the first boys basketball team to reach the Final Four in the 91-year school history. This run was a culmination of all the work the seniors had put into the team since our freshman year going 7-12. We helped changed the culture of not only basketball at SAS, but athletics as a whole. We may be a "private boarding school," but we want it as bad as the rest of the state, and this team helped prove that for future St. Andreans.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: What I am missing most right now being away from campus is the enjoyment and excitement of senior spring, the time where we can finally celebrate our years at SAS. I also miss my roommate Chefskii, but I am thrilled to be rooming with him next year in college to make up for this lost time.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Favorite places are the new/old gyms & dorm, specifically Hillier/ Fleming. I’ve shot thousands of jump shots in these gyms and have created unbreakable bonds on the court and dorm. Being an RL on Fleming, it was my job to bring underclassmen together and do all I could to help create a safe, comfortable, and caring space for them to enjoy living. And I feel like I did my job—freshmen boys dorm was truly something special this fall/winter and I will most definitely miss those freshmen I had the pleasure of living with.

William Richard Ewles AKA Billy HOMETOWN: Paget, Bermuda FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS

tradition must be the opening night Square Dance and Open Mic. It is such a goofy experience where everyone truly escapes their comfort zone and has an absolute blast.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: It was a warm, spring, Sunday afternoon when Mr. DeSalvo and his dog came down to join me on the T-Dock as I was playing guitar. He sat there with me as we played and sung through song after song throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. It was such a peaceful and calming moment with a slight breeze in the air, happy voices playing volleyball in the background, and Mr. DeSalvo's dog occasionally barking.

RECALL IN A DECADE: The incredible friendships that develop here are what will stick with me most, and in particular, my relationships with my roommates. I have had the absolute privilege to get to room with some of the most genuine, thoughtful, and incredible people I have ever known. Every single moment I had in the quad freshman year (with Messiah, Wade, and James), my double sophomore year (with Jeffrey), and the triple my junior and senior years (with Wade and James) will stay with me throughout my entire life. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS:

St. Andrew's is so much more than just classes. Be bold, take risks, play four square on the front lawn, make a new friend, join a new club, try a new sport, don’t take yourself too seriously, go for a hike, play a game with your roommates, walk to town, GO OUTSIDE! But most of all, treasure every moment like it is the last moment, because these are the good days.

Dustin Fang HOMETOWN: Newark, Delaware FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The cross-country

team was my favorite. My coaches and fellow runners taught me about self-improvement and resilience. Going camping and running alongside my friends during preseason were some of the best experiences I had.

RECALL IN A DECADE: Meeting new people and all the spontaneous moments I had with them will be in my mind for years to come. I remember fort-building during crew pre-season out by Possum Point and mountainbiking one weekend with no prior experience but with a good teacher and some friends. I’ll remember board game nights every Saturday. The spontaneous moments where my friends and I jumped in to whatever was going on, with no hesitation, are the experiences that will stick with me.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: The most important thing I would tell them would be to have faith in themselves. It goes beyond being confident or believing in your abilities. It really extends to preventing how others look at you or what others say to you affect what you’re doing day to day. Keep your focus on the goals you have set and don’t doubt what you feel is important to get done. Don’t waste your time on activities that don’t make you happy or improve your skills. Remember you’re worth more than that.

Lila Sperry Feldmann HOMETOWN: That’s a complicated question but I’ll say

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite

place on the SAS campus is the band room. Not the big orchestra room, but the band room with a code that people don’t know exists until they find it. Kwashie and I discovered it sophomore year and then discovered that we both liked to play music, so he would play the drums and I would sit and sing and strum my guitar. Then one day we asked Dustin if he would want to come with us and try to pick up the bass. He learned very quickly. We were playing in there one day when Isabel, my roommate at the time, came in and started playing these incredible songs on the piano that she had written herself. Thus our band was birthed and dubbed Capture the Sunset. My bandmates are people who I know I can always count on and that room is the place that helped me find them.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Junior year I led the Walk for Water at SAS and raised $1600 to help build wells in Malawi. That project was something I was very passionate about because I have lived in multiple countries where water deprivation is a serious and pressing issue. It was amazing to see Mr. Roach, who we all see as this powerful leader, humble himself and carry a bucket of water on a 5k to understand someone else’s experience. The project also got me involved in the St. Andrew’s community service program which led to me to join the team that runs the Special Olympics Fall Festival on campus, which was yet another inspiring and humbling experience.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Take the thing that you do, and the thing that people expect you to do, and then, just for fun, do the complete opposite. My most memorable SAS experiences have been when I was doing things that I could never have seen myself doing. This spring I tried dancing for the first time because I’ve always let the fact that I have size 11 feet and a propensity for tripping stop me. I did the whole dance and didn’t trip once! At the end of my junior year I wanted to be on Moss so I spontaneously joined my friends (who I didn’t know very well at the time) Mia and Charlotte in a triple. They are now two of my closest friends and people who I deeply trust. The unexpected is always (always!) the more interesting path to take.

Comrie Barr Flinn, Jr. AKA Barr HOMETOWN: Kennett, Pennsylvania FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The 2018 lacrosse

team. Everyone on the team was extremely welcoming to me as new addition to the team (I did crew my freshman year spring). We did really well together and my favorite memory would be the game away at Wilmington Friends.

It was close until the very last second, and we won 13-12.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Favorite tradition would have to be the Carol Shout. There is nothing like it anywhere else. Something about gathering the entire school and screaming is a weird thing to do but it is something I look forward to every year.

Josephine August Friedli AKA Josie HOMETOWN: Easton, Maryland WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Spending

time outside. As I am stuck inside more, I keep picturing the green grass of the Front Lawn, sitting outside on a towel on a warm afternoon, doing my work and enjoying the view. I am so lucky to be able to say I went to a school as pretty as ours. How often do you hear of a high school with their own pond! I had also made it a goal of mine to walk all the way around the pond in the spring, but I never got to do that. I hope I can come back and accomplish this!

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: It was my sophomore year English class with Mr. Speers, and I was sitting right next to him. I took a sip of water... and a second later one of my classmates said something hilarious, andI laughed out loud and ending up spraying Mr. Speers and his 25 year-old notes. It was more embarrassing than anything but it ended up being the class joke for the rest of the year. Then, junior year, I had English with Mr. Speers again and brought a tea to class and somehow knocked it over on his notes again.

Needless to say, after that nobody wanted to sit next to me when I brought a drink to class. Not sure why this is what sticks with me but it is one of my most vivid memories, probably because of how embarrassing and funny it was.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I know you probably hear this all of the time, but it is the one piece of advice that I took to heart and carried around with me at SAS. I came as a super-quiet freshman, never thinking I would give an announcement, be a part of a club, or be an outspoken teammate; however, knowing that so many people believed in me, I decided to try new things and I am so glad I did, because I learned how fun it is to reach out and talk.

Charlotte Graham Gehrs HOMETOWN: Alexandria, Virginia FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: I was lucky enough

to be in Mr. Speers’ English class my sophomore and junior year. They were the hardest classes at SAS for me, but some of my favorites. Mr. Speers led our classes to have some of the best discussions I’ve had at SAS. He is so passionate about teaching and literature, which makes him an excellent teacher. Writing papers was often a really big challenge for me, but the improvements I made were truly rewarding.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss being around everyone! I miss living with the sophomores on Moss, being with my friends, and saying hi to other St. Andreans in the hallway. Now, we have to reach out virtually to connect with people, so there are many familiar faces that I just don’t get to see anymore.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: For me, the South Pond Trail just narrowly beats the Front Lawn as my favorite place on campus. Over the years, I’ve taken a bunch of solo runs and walks on that trail. It’s been a great place for reflecting and connecting to the natural world. It has been a bucket list goal of mine to go all the way around the pond. While I’m unable to do that before graduation, I will be sure to do it another time I’m back on campus!

RECALL IN A DECADE: One thing that will stick with me after graduation will be the incredible group of faculty members that have gotten to know, supported, and inspired me. Señora, Mrs. Carroll, Mr. Speers, Mrs. Brownlee, Dr. Hyde, Mr. Roach, and many other faculty members have meant so much to my time at St. Andrew’s. It’s amazing how dedicated the faculty are to the students here.

at SAS is Global Wisdom, because Mr. Kunen really serves as a mentor for me both in and outside of the classroom.

Ingrid Elisabeth Hoopes HOMETOWN: Middletown, Delaware WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Virtual learning makes me miss the people and being in a community most of all. Zoom calls make me sad, because my family is so close, yet so far. Being in such a close-knit community has changed my life and helped me come out of my shell, and without our community, I’m afraid I will lose these parts of myself. I miss hanging out on the Front Lawn after dinner—that is one of the most special recurring moments at St. Andrew’s. People from every grade hang out all together, playing four square or spike ball.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition is the Square Dance because it brings the community together so fast in the very beginning of the year. Getting dressed up with my dorm and taking pictures before heading over to the Front Lawn is something so special to me, because it was the first time of the year that we would all get to be together again.

Dancing to silly line dance songs with all of my friends, and the entire school, is such an amazing bonding experience. The fact that I can remember details from all four of my Square Dances shows just how much of an impact this tradition has had on me.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Save the Wave. Starting this organization has allowed me to spread awareness about ocean pollution through art—two things I am very passionate about. Seeing the SAS community appreciating the message of my art has been very inspiring and motivational.

Christopher Kalert Hummel AKA Topher favorite team at St. Andrew’s. The program granted me the opportunity to work with the best coaches, improve my game, and most importantly, gave me an outlet to be competitive and forget about the stresses of day-to-day life.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: The people! It is so atypical for me to not be spending time with the people that I’ve been fostering relationships with for the past four years. I miss going out on the Front Lawn in the spring, lacrosse practices, and the teachers that care so much about my success.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Move-in day of freshman year was an extremely emotional and powerful day.

Leaving the comfort of my home to move into a new environment with total strangers was very intimidating, yet exciting. Moving in with Beck and Eddie that day and meeting my soon-to-be best friends at the Square Dance is something that I’ll never forget.

RECALL IN A DECADE: Obviously, the bonds that I’ve created with my friends at SAS has had the biggest impact on my life. I know that my peers from St. Andrew’s will be my lifelong friends, because we shared such a powerful and transformational experience together.

Advisory. We always had so much fun as a group, and it was a place for the boys to just be boys.

Stewards! This is the most passionate group of people I have ever come across. Not only did they inspire me with their many ideas about sustainable development, but they made me understand the power of spending time in nature.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: What I miss the most about St. Andrew’s is the abundance of smiles and greetings I receive from all my peers and teachers when I walk through the halls. Whether it is one of my best friends or someone I do not get to talk to very often, a simple “Hi Katerina!’” never fails to brighten my day.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Square Dance. There is nothing better than promenading all around the Front Lawn on opening day with the most inspiring student body I have ever met.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Being the host family for Pia Mozdzanowski ’19 during my sophomore year. During her year at SAS, Pia was more than just a classmate. She would always collaborate with me on physics homework, motivate me in the pool during swim practice, and was always eager to teach me how to bake her favorite German foods. To this day, I still consider Pia my sister.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: During my junior year, I founded the Adaptive Dance Program. Every week, I got to teach dance to local students with disabilities and even got to choreograph dances for them to perform in our school productions.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I’ll never forget how amazing my dorm experience was. No matter how good or bad my day was, dorm was always a place of positivity. Whether we were all huddled in our dorm parent's apartment watching a movie, or staying up on a Saturday night in the common room laughing and sharing stories, there was definitely never a dull moment.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: It is okay to ask for help. All your classmates and teachers want to see you succeed and will do anything for you to achieve your goals. Give yourself grace when you make mistakes. This place is about learning who you are as a person, not about being perfect. Each and every person at SAS loves you for you.

special place in my heart. Anchored by the fearless and wise Mr. Robinson (and sometimes Mr. Mufuka), the team struck a perfect balance between being a ruthless competitive unit and a bunch of boys having fun. I could not be more proud to be a 3-year member of the team.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I've always enjoyed the connections and experiences made during extracurricular activities and social hours. However, I have never truly appreciated Jazz Band, Voorhees, the recording studio, the tennis courts, the band room, Amos, the weight room, the Chapel, the student center, and even the faculty and students themselves, until I had to experience all of these things through a screen.

I'm bummed that I won't get the opportunity to sign yearbooks, perform on Engelhard with the senior band for Open Mic, or carve my name into the wall before I graduate. This will only make Reunion that much sweeter—knowing that one day I'll go back to campus and reconnect with the people and places that I wasn't ready to say goodbye to.

RECALL IN A DECADE: If I'm being honest, I think it is too easy to lose faith and confidence in yourself while at SAS, because we live with over 300 talented and dedicated students in an environment where everyone is striving to be the best person they can be. In my experience, comparing yourself to your peers (or an ideal version of yourself) is one of the most unhealthy things you can do to yourself, but St. Andrew's students hold themselves to such a high standard that inevitably that happens sometimes. It is important to remain aware of when you are criticizing yourself; there is a big difference between motivating yourself to be better and putting yourself down for no good reason.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: You don't need to be the person making announcements during lunch, sending all-school emails, or running a club to have a positive impact in the community. A big reason why you're at SAS is that you're unique, and you will find your own way of impacting the school in a positive way. You are a valuable member of this community. As long as you stay true to yourself, you will find that being a positive influence here isn't as hard as you initially thought.

basketball team. It was my favorite because we changed a lot of local opinions of St. Andrew's basketball and had a fun run in the state tournament.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: My friends.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Spring Fling POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: One of my most powerful experiences at SAS was my junior year english class with Mr. Speers. Not only was it an extremely interesting class, it was also a great experience to have Mr. Speers for his last year at St. Andrew's and to go through that final year with him.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Mentoring at MOT. I felt like that was a time and place where I had the biggest impact on the community surrounding SAS. RECALL IN A DECADE: The friendships I have made at the school. I really consider a good amount of friends at school to be my brothers.

and experiences I've had with my tennis team will always remain with me beyond my life at St. Andrew's. It was what had really brought me into the community when I had difficulty adjusting, and where I felt I was embraced with genuine warmth and invitation.

Ruilin Liu AKA William HOMETOWN: Shanghai, China FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Noxontones has

been my favorite. Members set aside their free time twice a week for rehearsals. Performances are highquality, peers build close relationships, and we are a team bonded together. Most of all, we get a lot of fun out of it.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: A traditional senior spring where people socialize on the Front Lawn and spend more time doing what they are passionate about outside of class.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Annual Christmas Carol Shout, as well as Baum, where I lived both as a sophomore and a senior.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: The first time I sang a solo was three weeks into my freshman year. I sang "Heal the World," a song by Michael Jackson, along with several other students. It was my first time experiencing the tremendous energy and great support shown by the St. Andrew's students, which made me instantly feel at home.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I have helped the Communications Office to take footage at a variety of school events. One time I took the all school photo with my drone, which was a very memorable and fun experience.

RECALL IN A DECADE: At. St. Andrew’s, I have learned to put down my phone or other smart devices and enjoy my time connecting with people around me in reality.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Hard-working, inclusive, different.

Ruth Alexander Lunsford HOMETOWN: Charlottesville, Virginia FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The field hockey

program led by Coach Davila is not a team, but a sisterhood. I found some of my best friends for life both on and off the field playing with St. Andrew’s on our chests. From preseason to games, the support and love of the team is evident and I am so grateful for my time on the team.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Not being at SAS during our senior spring—the time that we worked towards for years—is heartbreaking, and I am missing my roomates, friends, and teammates like I would my own family.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: One of my favorite memories at SAS was my field hockey senior day after beating Tower Hill. That was the game we had been building up to all season and to see the team, program, and school come together was incredible—and our parents were there to celebrate with us. Winning that game and shutting out Tower Hill proved to me that all of our hard work and money in the bank had been worth it!!!

RECALL IN A DECADE: The people that I spent my time with and formed friendships with will forever have a place in my heart. SAS gave me genuine friendships that are stronger than the distance and very meaningful.

Embrace the uncertainty of high school life and fully devote yourself to the experience. You will find St. Andrew's is your home.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: What I miss most about SAS right now is the spontaneity. I love that on any given day, no matter the weather or the circumstance, I could find a group of people to walk to Starbucks or hike in the woods. SAS absolutely taught me to find fun in creative ways, and I think that’s an important lifelong skill.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite place on St. Andrew’s campus has to be the T-Dock.

In every direction you look, there’s an amazing view.

I especially recommend playing some chill music and stargazing with friends.

RECALL IN A DECADE: SAS taught me to continually learn about others and never make assumptions. Even when you think you have someone figured out, there’s more to learn. After four years, I’m still learning more about how complex my classmates and friends are.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: The best advice I can give is this: listen to your own needs and take good care of yourself, first and foremost. At SAS, it can be really easy to get caught up in schoolwork, socializing, and sports. You have to remember to take care of your own well-being and make time for what you value. If you feel you need some alone time, then take it!

the fastest runner, I really enjoyed being a part of the girl’s cross-country team. At practices and races, I was able to challenge and push my body and mind as much as I wanted, and I loved how it never mattered if you were fast or slow or just joined the team—the girls and coaches were always there to cheer you on.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I definitely miss all the spontaneous interactions that would take place after study hall, especially those that took place in the common rooms. I miss bonding and debriefing about the day with my dormmates over Ms. Pressman’s baked goods or the Dining Hall cookies. I miss how easy it was to just talk with the faculty on duty about random things like their spice preferences, ASMR sounds, or advice they would give to themselves at our age. It was small interactions like those that always seemed to make my day.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition is talking to people at the dinner table for the entire evening. I can’t count how many incredible, bizarre, and profound conversations that I’ve had at the Dining Hall tables during and after dinner, both with friends and with people with whom I had never spent much time prior to that particular conversation.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Your experience is going to be unique because you are unique. Also, don’t make decisions based on how you think colleges will perceive you. Do things for your own intellectual and creative growth.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I want to live in the world where the right choice is the easiest choice to make. I also would like to be paid for sharing my opinion.

I want The New York Times to publish an opinion piece in their culture section about an intellectual feud that I had with a white supremacist professor. And I want to be a librarian after I retire, and make amazing snickerdoodles for myself and my fellow library friends.

team was my favorite group on campus. From the coaching staff to the players themselves, people on our team seemed to strike a balance between hard work and having fun. I think this balance brought us closer together everywhere and helped to make us successful.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I’ve found myself missing my core group of friends.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition is the Frosty Run. It’s a great way to integrate new students and reintegrate the whole grade after being apart for the whole summer.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Being a part of the football team was definitely powerful, especially when I came in as a new sophomore. I go to experience the players’ emotional motivation to win our first game under the lights against Red Lion that year. The team went from not having won a single game in two years to becoming a serious threat in our conference by senior year.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: It’s not much of a project, but deejaying dances with Griffin Batson was an experience that I think impacted the people organizing the dance, the students attending the dance, and a lot of the faculty as well. Given that people seemed to have fun, I think the impact was mostly positive.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I think St. Andrew’s has forced me to engage in myself, academically, politically, and socially.

My general awareness of the world and people around me has vastly increased, and I know that this will stick with me for a long time.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: My peers, teachers, and people that support me at SAS. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite place on campus is the South Pond Trail along the Noxontown Pond. It’s a narrow trail that follows the edge of the water, and when you go far enough south you can view Founders Hall and the T-Dock from a distance. I always loved that walking in the woods felt like entering a different world, a retreat from busy everyday SAS life. I love the way that the sound of the bells seems to reverberate among the trees.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Hearing Jesmyn Ward as a guest speaker when she visited St. Andrew’s last year was an especially powerful experience. I had read two of Ward’s books, Salvage the Bones and Sing, Unburied, Sing, in my English classes before her visit. During the dinner with Jesmyn Ward, she described her personal story in relation to the stories that she put on the page.

During her subsequent lecture, as Ward read passages from her book, I was struck by both the entrancing and illuminative qualities of this moment.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I think the experiences of friendship and community will always be a part of me, long after I leave SAS. My four years at St. Andrew’s has instilled in me the idea that friendship can be a powerful and affirming part of my life, and that there are very few things in the world more important than the people that I’m surrounded by.

was my junior year English class with Mr. Torrey. This class was such an incredible group of individuals, and we had the best conversations about literature, especially about Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. I attribute most of my writing success to Mr. Torrey. He really helped me discover my own writing process and always encouraged me to dig deeper as well as think about what the literature we were writing about had to say with regard to greater society.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I really miss being able to see my friends whenever I want to.

I miss living, playing, working, and growing with the people that I have come to love like family over these last four years. I really miss living with my two roommates, who are two incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, and hilarious people that made my last rooming experience at SAS amazing. I also miss swimming and canoeing on the pond so much, especially during the spring.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: One of my favorite SAS memories is when many members of our community went to The Everett Theatre for the Manhattan Film Festival. All of the films were incredible, but there was one—Sylvia, by Richard Pendergast—that stood out from the rest and wound up winning the competition. After the film ended, I turned to Ingrid Hoopes, who was sitting next to me, and we both just burst into tears. We sat there in the theatre for at least seven minutes, leaning against one another and just bawling our eyes out. To be so vulnerable in front of our friends and classmates without feeling the need to suppress our emotions was a truly freeing experience.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Reading Beloved by Toni Morrison was a really powerful experience for me. It is one of the most incredible books that I have ever read and to be able to work through it at the same time as my classmates felt like such a bonding experience for my class. Beloved felt like the pinnacle of my St. Andrew’s education.

Breakfast Bible Study because it gave me something to look forward to each week. It was a routine that had me coming back to campus happier and more grateful than I was when I first stepped into the van.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss the impromptu study hall dance or Pictionary breaks in Amos that were definitely not productive. I miss watching movies with friends on Sunday afternoon, telling ourselves we were studying because there was an open notebook nearby. I miss being able to have conversations about anything from politics to Minecraft during dinner. I miss playing spike ball on the Front Lawn and swimming in the pond or walking in the woods. I miss my people and I miss SAS more than I ever thought was possible.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition is definitely the Frosty Run. Trying to explain this concept to anyone outside of the community is near impossible, but that’s what makes it so exciting. A group of 75-ish high schoolers taking hundreds of pictures in ridiculous matching t-shirts eating at Wendy’s with a sasquatch running around? Only at St. Andrew’s.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: One of my most powerful memories from SAS was my first day as a new sophomore when a group of returning girls ran into my room, introduced themselves, then practically dragged me to the Square Dance. I didn’t know anybody, and still these girls showed me the SAS ethos within the first few hours on campus. It was this moment that I knew I had made the right choice to come to St. Andrew’s.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Take pictures with your friends all the time. Not only when you’re all dressed up for hapel or prom, but on dorm or during a study hall break. My favorite pictures of my friends and I have been taken at times when we’re all wearing sweats with messy hair and no makeup. These are the real moments of SAS. Don’t take a second of your time there for granted or wish away the best years of your life. I found myself wishing certain days to go by faster just to get to the next break, but right now I would do anything to have more time there.

crew teams always pushed me to be my best and my teammates and coaches were always so encouraging and supportive! All of my teammates always came to practice with a smile, ready to put the work in. My favorite classes were Mr. Torrey’s English class & AS Chemistry with Mr. Kemer and my Chempossible gang. Also, MDBD & L Dorm never disappoint!

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Being around the people. I realize now I took having my friends, classmates, teachers, and teammates so close to me for granted. I really miss the small, funny, spur-of-themoment conversations that I would have with my friends in between classes and on dorm—and the spur-of-themoment decisions that turned into super-fun adventures.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite memories of St. Andrew’s are the random adventures we had, all the time: losing shoes in the swamp, walking to the crew docks, running around singing on the fields, and our impromptu swimming in the pond after junior exams are just a few.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Sophomore year I jumped into working with Special Olympics and I’m so glad I did.

It was a lot of work to plan, but seeing all of the joy on athlete’s faces and how enthusiastic the student body was to help out made it all worth it.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I think what will stick with me is how to understand other perspectives. St. Andrew’s has taught me how to seek out other’s perspectives and to learn and grow from them.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Always say yes! You never know what can come from a random decision to go outside or to the Dining Hall. Your homework will be there when you get back, but you only have four years at St. Andrew’s. Dive in headfirst, you won’t regret it.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: After college, I hope to be in NYC working for an architecture firm—and I hope that I will still be in touch with all of my friends from St. Andrew’s!

being on dorm with everyone. I never realized how big a part of my day dorm was: seeing all the sophomore girls (I live on Moss), doing duty, organizing functions, senior catch-up meetings... dorm life was always so fun and always made my day, so that’s definitely something I miss!

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Dining Hall. It’s where SAS students spend most of their day, I think—getting work done at your favorite table; having religious and/or philosophical walk-and-talks while also sneaking food back to class; trying to figure out who’s waiter and who’s assistant at lunch; chatting with friends while lining up for dinner. For me, when I think about SAS, the Dining Hall never fails to come to mind.

spent three years on the girl’s lacrosse team. All of my coaches have taught me how to be confident in myself on the field and as a person. My teammates every year challenged me to be a better player but also grew to be like family to me. Many of my favorite memories from SAS belong to that team.

From dance parties during brush-and-wash to highly entertaining conversations in the common room, there was always something crazy and fun going on. Although we had a slow start in coming together, that big yellow building worked its magic by the time spring had come.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: I would tell underclassmen to take every opportunity to get to know everyone in your class. You may have dismissed someone after your first impression freshman year, but as I’ve continued through SAS I have found that some of my greatest friendships have been the unexpected ones.

At every moment, you’re talking to someone, whether in class, hallway, Dining Hall, dorm, Field House— even in the Health Center. And I’ve had so many amazing conversations where I learned something new or learned about someone that I might not have had the chance to otherwise. Those conversations played a serious role in helping me become the well-rounded person I want to be.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: There were so many amazing moments during my St. Andrew’s career, but I think my favorite one would have to be the final Carol Shout senior year. It was the last big tradition where our whole class was together, and it was a really good time. Later some of us squeezed into Will Rob’s car and went to Wawa. So as a whole, it just reminded me of why I went to St. Andrew’s—to be able to have fun with my whole grade and to really get to know every person there over four years. To make those kinds of connections was an opportunity I couldn't get anywhere else.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: My project with A.I. Dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington meant a lot to me, and hopefully, SAS as well. During our trips to the hospital, we had the opportunity to interact with the kids there, and that is easily a top-five experience in my St. Andrew’s career. This year, Mr. Gold had the great idea to bring the Dance Company to the hospital to perform for its patients. I really hope these kinds of partnerships continue.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I think something that will stick with me is the idea that there are always bigger implications in the decisions we make; to always think of all demographics; and try to do things that will benefit us as a whole community.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: Long-term, I would love to work in possibly wealth management or maybe work on finances for an NGO. But to be entirely honest, as long as I’m working as hard as I can, taking care of my family, and help those in the community around me, I’ll be fine with whatever life gives me.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Definitely the place and the people. It simply isn’t the same without either of them. I miss just being able to sit out on the Front Lawn and chat with friends.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: While I was at SAS, I was able to reach out to Richard Blanco, the author of the Prince of Los Cocuyos and Obama’s inaugural poet. I had read his book over the course of the summer and got the idea to message his agent so that he could come to SAS and speak to us. The speakers who had come to SAS prior to this hadn’t really resonated with me personally, and I knew that some people agreed with me on that. In being able to have him visit and speak, I found that I was able to connect the community with someone that a lot of people could relate to. He brought many perspectives that we hadn’t yet seen represented at SAS in such a large way.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I think the friendships I’ve made will last me a lifetime. I’ve never connected with a group of people in the way I had at SAS and I don’t plan on losing contact any time soon. The place itself has a magic to it that I won’t ever forget.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Take in every moment, even the little things. It’ll be over before you know it and you’ll wish you appreciated it more.

at SAS was definitely the boys varsity soccer team. Since my sophomore year, this team pushed me to put forth my best self both on and off of the field. There were good times as well as bad times, all of which created memories that I will play over and over in my head forever.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: What I miss most is seeing my friends from around the country and world. SAS provides a unique opportunity to connect with others who often have completely different values than our own. I think this causes all of us to form strong friendships with one another. Since our virtual term began, all I can think about is hanging out with all of those friends that made SAS such a pleasant experience.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: During my junior year, I decided to take a mental health leave to better myself and become more efficient in various aspects of my life.

Having missed so much school for such a sensitive reason, I found the way I was welcomed back into the community powerful, because for so long I felt alone— until St. Andrew’s made me realize that I wasn’t.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: The advice that I would give to the underclassmen is to just take a step back and realize that in 20 years what you will remember the most about SAS is the friendships you’ve formed. Make sure that you don’t take it for granted and enjoy every moment as if it were your last.

I feel that way because that’s how I was treated the moment I stepped onto the court my freshman year, and that’s the purpose and love I aimed to spread to others on the team from that day onward.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Gosh, the people. Walks in the woods. Watching the sunset over the fields. Staying up late and having ramen dates in the common room, which culminate in me half-successfully harassing my roommate to go to bed. I miss these times both big and small so much more than I ever thought I could.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Mr. Torrey’s classroom, formerly known as the library reference room.

It’s perfectly situated in the library, one of my happy places, with so many nooks and spots to fit whatever mood you're in. Plus tea, plants, friends, books, artwork, and library trivia!

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: During my junior spring things felt like they were flying around me, and at times I felt quite uprooted. So over spring Long Weekend, I made a choice to stay on campus and recharge; I’m pretty sure that was the first time in my life that I’ve made an active decision to take care of myself. My weekend consisted of a camping trip to the Shenandoah National Forest with such a random group that I fully embraced. I scrambled up rocks, sunbathed on cliff faces, and slept under the stars. Moments like these where, at St. Andrew’s, I went out of my way to just live and feel connected, even in a time period when I felt so overwhelmed, are the moments I’ll never forget.

RECALL IN A DECADE: In high school I learned to talk about my feelings. I learned how to communicate.

And I learned what it means to be strong and how strength relies upon the importance of asking for help.

Moments of difficult roommate conversations, opening up to coaches, and confiding in my friends with deep trust come to mind; thanks to these moments I have developed into a strong and ever-strengthening person because of SAS.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: When I hosted a Phone Free Weekend, I wasn’t expecting many participants. However, when more than 50% of the student body turned in their phones, I was shocked and giddy. Looking back on it, this moment to me demonstrates how the St. Andrew's community acts as a mirror, reflecting back the passion any member shows for a subject.

St. Andrew’s holds a special place in my heart. Everyone on the team is motivated by their love for the sport and each other. Not only did Mama Lou, Mr. Berl, and Eliza help me find a deep love for crew, but they are also a source of empowerment for me outside of the boat.

I owe a debt of gratitude to my coaches and team for helping me reach the next chapter in my rowing career.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss my advisory the most. Mr. Rehrig is an extraordinary teacher and person. He gives all of his attention and love to his advisory and students. My experience at St. Andrew’s would not be complete without Mr. Rehrig and the connections I made with my advisory. I will never forget our card games, strange videos, and eating Mr. Rehrig’s whipped cream with a side of his homemade ice cream.

I am so grateful for the moments I had with my fellow advisees and Nahla.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My fondest memories at SAS are the moments I spent outdoors.

This year Spencer and I took a canoe to watch the sunset. I also went camping in Will Rob’s backyard with Christine, Will Cook, and Spencer. We all sat around a fire and talked until it was too cold, then went to our tents.

St. Andrew’s scenery is so beautiful, but holds the most meaning when shared with people I love.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: I have always been terrified of running, but my sophomore year I tried cross-country.

I despised the sport, but only because I did not go in with an open mind—but the team was so special that I finished the season. My senior year I decided to run again, because I felt like I denied myself an experience that I didn’t fully embrace the first time. I was given one last opportunity, so I took it and ran with it, literally.

I might not be fast, but I truly enjoyed myself. It was really incredible being able to turn something I hated so deeply into something I care about and now really enjoy.

To me this is powerful because the team promoted an atmosphere that fostered humility, authentic relationships, and loyalty, despite varying speeds.

Jeffrey Roh thirds soccer has to be one of the most memorable experiences at SAS. Although we weren’t quite proficient as we wished with our footwork, the team dynamic and energy never failed to bring a smile to my face during practice. We were all more than just teammates.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: The first thing that comes up to mind is pretty obvious: the Front Lawn. Playing four square, exchanging DMCs [deep meaningful conversations] on the T-Dock, and throwing a Frisbee. The less obvious, I would say, is study-hall.

The miss grinding on my papers as time ticked towards 10:30, and occasionally taking a study break by wandering around founders hall to find company.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS location has to be the walnut grove on a snowy day.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I will never forget all the Open Mic Nights Billy and the Goats have performed in since our freshman year. We were all stepping out of our comfort zones.

being able to walk through the hallways during breaks and catch up with my peers face-to-face. I could talk with one of my teachers, crack jokes with a friend in the Dining Hall as I make myself some tea, or sit down and do a crossword puzzle along with anyone else who walks by Cierra Martinez’s computer screen and wonders what we are doing. Cherish those little moments and breaks throughout your day because they make your SAS experience so much brighter.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Will Rob might disagree with me on this, but there’s a special kind of bonding that takes place at night on dorm, especially if you stay up a little late. The night before we left for Christmas break this year, all of K dorm stayed up to clean and ended up having a huge feast in the common room in order to eat the food that was still in our fridge.

We danced, joked, and talked about our lives as we tried to figure out whose food we were allowed to eat next (be respeKtful, asK the person first). That was such an incredible moment for me, and being able to get to know and bond with my fellow Kweenz of K was worth the guilt of not working on my TransAtlantic essay instead.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Form your own opinions and ideas about your peers instead of just listening to other people’s complaints or gossip.

When I was a new sophomore, I missed out on a lot of friendships because I wasn’t confident enough to reach out to my classmates and really get to know them.

Instead, I let myself get carried away by rumors and my peers’ opinions because I wanted to fit in, when I could have been a lot more friendly—and more happy—if I had let more people in and kept an open mind.

dance! Especially the Dance Club at St. Anne’s and Silver Lake. I love working with kids, and I got to do this with Bobbi. The experience was so important to me and I’m hopeful that these outreach programs will continue.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss being with my friends. I used to think Pell was so far from L Dorm, and now some of my friends are hours away from me.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: I love the grass area right behind junior girls dorm! A big group of us used to tan and just hang out there in the spring of junior year, and it was so nice being with girls from K, L, and M. RECALL IN A DECADE: Definitely M dorm 2018-19. That group of girls was amazing, and I really was able to find my place at SAS through living on M. Along with that, Ms. Gahagan and Ms. Duprey are amazing, and I have so many memories from the common room after study hall with everyone dancing, singing, or just hanging out.

Ava Knight Sekowski class was Global Studies: Current Issues in American and International Policies, taught by Will Robinson. I loved this class because of the varied of students and backgrounds as well as the way current events shaped our class discussions. I learned so, so much in this halfsemester class through the readings and the passionate discussions about American policies. From our discussions of immigration policies at the Middletown Starbucks to watching the impeachment trials, I think anyone in D-block Global Studies can agree that this class was so impactful.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Other than missing my all my friends and the best roommate ever, Dana, I miss living on Pell and having duty nights the most. I loved getting to put the Pell girls to bed and I wish I had valued it more while I still could do it. Every duty night on Wednesday the girls would bring their energy (and noise) to the halls of Upper and Lower Pell.

Even though it, sometimes, required much persistence to get everyone (on Upper) to brush and wash and go to their rooms, I always loved getting to hear about their days and what was going on in their lives.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: During my senior year, I was able to somehow convince Will Rob to drive myself and six other seniors to New York City directly after class to watch a film and participate in a discussion on the future of human rights at Columbia Law School. This experience showed me the incredible lengths the faculty are willing to go to to give us meaningful and impactful experiences. It also showed me the uniqueness of St. Andrew's students: my peers wanted to spend six hours in a car only to be in New York for a total of about three hours. To me, this proved that St. Andrew’s students value knowledge and experiences above anything else. It made look at the community here differently and better appreciate all the values the school stands for and all the things the school does for its students.

HUMANITIES, by far. I remember my freshman year hearing about it and saying to my parents that I was going to take that class my senior year. It was a combination of my two favorite subjects—history and English—and it was taught by two of the most kindhearted and intellectual women I know. Plus the people in my class are the best—without them it wouldn’t be the same.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: 100% the people and the Front Lawn. Both are essential pieces of what make St. Andrew’s, St. Andrew’s. If it weren’t for the people, my time at SAS wouldn’t have been as amazing as it has been. The Front Lawn will always be the best place on campus because it is where you start your journey at SAS and where you will finish your journey at SAS. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Favorite tradition: The Carol Shout because it is so uniquely St. Andrew’s. No other place or school has anything like it. Standing in a clumped circle with the entire student body and faculty, shouting Christmas carols at the top of your lungs, and having the time of your life right before you leave for Winter Break... what more could you ask for?

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: The two days of graduation festivities for the Class of 2019 because this was the first time that it hit me that the Class of 2020 would now be leading the school in so many ways we hadn’t before. It was an emotional time, not just because we were saying "see you later" to the one class who we had been with the longest, but it was also in that time that everything just seemed to click with our grade. I think we all realized that we were now the leaders of the school and what we do will have a lasting impression on the rest of the community. All though those two days were bittersweet, the amount of energy that radiated from the Class of 2020 was extraordinary and it reinforced how much love I have for this group of students and for this school.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: MOST MAGICAL PLACE

was the winter musical. Initially I was not comfortable with the idea of singing and dancing in front of an audience my freshman year. However, I left my comfort zone and pursued something that was new and exciting.

After the first show, I was relieved that it was over, but I soon found a genuine enjoyment from performing on stage. I loved playing different characters and the feeling of accomplishment after each season.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Thoughtful, engaging, warm.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Go outside and take advantage of the beauty that the campus has to offer. It may be tempting to play video games with your friends on dorm, but the time you spend with your peers off dorm is more memorable.

Whether it be in the Dining Hall, Front Lawn, or in any part of the 2,200 magnificent acres the school has to offer, the memories you create there will be more thoughtful and impactful than any "high score."

miss spring at St. Andrew’s. Each year it made such an impression on me how the whole culture of the school really gelled and came together each year at spring time.

basketball is one of my favorite teams on campus. As their manager I’ve seen the boys work very hard to go down as one of the best basketball teams in school history. But, my favorite part of the team is Terrell. He is a great coach and an even better advisor.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition would have to be Senior Retro. It’s a great time to get the community together and say farewell to the seniors and thank them for the time and effort they have put into leading the community.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Once I got to SAS i noticed there was no affinity group for black women, and my junior year I decided to do something about it. In collaboration with two of my friends, Bwembya and Steph, I helped make Essence, whose goal was to make a safe space for black women at SAS. And that effort spawned a mentorship program with the black students at St. Anne’s. It is the most fulfilling project I’ve ever been apart of and I am extremely thankful for the support I got from faculty and friends.

RECALL IN A DECADE: The friendships I’ve made here are like no other. The memories made on St. Andrew’s campus will stick with me forever. Whether it be spontaneous food runs to Wawa with a faculty member and friends, or just being on duty, this place has become my home, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

being on the cross-country team because I was so close with everyone around me. The team dynamic was so amazing and it was such a welcoming group of people.

We were all very comfortable with each other from the beginning and we were able to have a lot of fun whilst still running hard and striving to compete at a high level.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I find myself truly missing my friends most of all. Being without the people who have helped shaped me into the person I am today is really difficult and I miss being with them every day. We all still get on Zoom to talk to each other, or group FaceTime, but its not the same as being there in person as a group.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: I’d have to say that my most powerful experience was more of a privilege that we all enjoyed senior year. Becoming seniors means that you have a little more freedom when it comes to on-dorm time and this meant that almost every night there would be a group of guys in the Baum common room just sitting there and talking. Since a lot of our day is very scheduled and we can’t always interact with one another due to sports or our academic schedule, these moments were super-important in helping us form deeper and more meaningful relationships.

RECALL IN A DECADE: My love for learning new things will stick with me the most. A lot of students don’t talk about how SAS instills a joy of learning in you through each teacher’s enjoyment of what they're teaching.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Uplifting, unforgettable, powerful.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Try to talk to everyone in your grade and get to know them the best you can. I wish I had talked to more people in my class because now that I’m at home, I find myself missing everyone, no matter how well I knew them.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I hope that I can find a great job doing something that I love and that I can continue to stay connected and keep in touch with classmates far into the future.

Seeing how it impacted girls in different ways was the most rewarding part of the journey to create a new affinity group. I'm looking forward to seeing how Essence has evolved when we come back to campus in the future.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss being able to connect with the underclassmen and have funny conversations as I put them to bed. I miss just being in the presence of the people who make me the happiest.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite place on campus is the M Dorm common room. The energy and the loving people I lived with my junior year are truly what made the dorm as fun as it was. The faculty always participated in our fun and the seniors were the best people we could have asked for. They were understanding and just great leaders to look up to. I’ve had my best conversations and learning moments just sitting on that couch.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Taking on the role of copresident is one of the most challenging and rewarding "projects" I have undertaken. I have learned so much from those who have supported me throughout this journey, but I've also had the opportunity to learn more about myself and who I am as a leader.

Bwembya Samantha Tembo HOMETOWN: Centreville, Virginia WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I really

really love Open Mic Nights. I’ve only performed once at an Open Mic Night in all my time here, but it’s not the rush of performing that draws me to them. Before I performed, I was seated in a row with some kids in my grade and some kids in the grade above us. Some of us had blankets, but we had stretched them to their max length so that two or three people could use one blanket. We laughed A LOT, cuddled, swayed to the sound of these really good faculty kids sing their hearts out, and would FREAK OUT if one of us went up to perform. I miss being able to walk into Englehard and literally feel the excited energy radiating off of us.

I miss being able to obnoxiously point to Steph and blow her kisses whenever some lovey-dovey touching song came on just to see her roll her eyes. I miss being able to scream "Mr. Brightside" at the base of the stage while Dante and Owen jump around erractically and Jeffery's hair flops as he nods his head. I just miss the overwhelming feeling of community and the warmth our energy brought during these Open Mic Nights.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: When I came to St. Andrew's, I thought it was going to be extremely hard to make friends because I’d never really been a "conventional person". Looking back on it, I was a little "cringey," but honestly, who wasn’t. I KNEW I felt comfortable here.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS:

You're always growing. I promise. I'm sure you've heard countless times that we, at St. Andrew's, live in a bubble.

When you hear this so often, it can get really hard to believe that you're not in one, especially when you always see the same people and do the same kinds of things every day. We're a very forward-thinking, and forward-moving, school and I understand that it may be hard to see or believe that you're becoming a more dynamic person but I promise you it's true. When you're really close to being done with SAS, you're going to look back and truly think "I am in SUCH a different place than I was when I started my time here." I believe that everyone who comes to St. Andrew's was meant to come here for one reason or another, and it changes them for the better in so many ways. It'll change you too, just let it happen and PLEASE don't rush.

St. Andrew's career, the musical ended up being one of my favorite things. It started as something new I did to step out of my comfort zone, and turned into one of my most memorable experiences. I wish I had gotten involved much earlier than I did.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: The physical connections with my friends and socializing around campus.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Tuesday pizza holds a special place in my heart because it is a tradition I helped to uphold. I always took it for granted until I had to actually write the tongue twisters. This tradition is one of the things that has defined my senior year.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Fyre Festival—organizing such a big event with so many moving parts and to see it succeed made an extremely powerful memory.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I will always hold on to the importance of person-to-person relationships and creativity unhindered by technology and distractions.

Fun is one of my priorities, and sometimes you have to think outside the box to find it.

at SAS would be the baseball and basketball teams. I always loved the release sports have given me, and also my teammates were always there for me. Those guys became my brothers.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss my friends. It is just very weird to not see them walking in the dining hall or on dorm.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS place is probably the dorms. Although we sometimes don't make the best decisions, that’s where I will cherish so many memories.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: During this past winter I was a member of the varsity basketball team. Although I didn't expect much—besides a lot of conditioning—I was able to build a true bond with each one of my coaches and teammates.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: Since the virtual term has began what I find I miss most about SAS is being on campus with my people. I miss the freshman piling on top of me during study hall, Katie and Molly snacking with me after study hall, playing four square on the Front Lawn, going on hikes, and sitting around the seminar table.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite place at St. Andrew’s is the grass docks. I have been able to create many memories there—our junior class paint party, watching the sunrise, or just laying down in the grass looking up at the stars.

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: One of the most powerful experience I had at St. Andrew’s was when I realized that this was my home away from home. It was just another regular study hall night freshman year and Sofie Neil ’19 came to help me with math. After we were done, we ate pretzels and Oreos and just talked and got to know each other. This moment made me know that St. Andrew’s was different—everybody wants to be friends with one another and build the community.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: A project I’ve worked on while at SAS was interning for Communications this fall with Will Cook. We engaged with fall sports and activities, taking pictures and making videos. At the same time working with Will made us become closer to the point where he is now one of my best friends.

RECALL IN A DECADE: I know what will stick with me the most from my time at St. Andrew’s are the friendships that I have my made and the memories I created with them—canoeing/ flipping a canoe, tandem bike rides, swims in the pond, sitting down in classroom having long conversations and so many more.

Yuhan Wu favorite SAS memories was drawing the dorm timeline with my roommate Lucy Dai the night before school started in August 2019. We were so excited to be seniors, and we brainstormed how to make the most beautiful timeline in the world. We stayed up in Moss’s foyer even with our jet lag, made spelling mistakes, tried to fix those mistakes, and even changed the position of the timeline three times before we went to bed.

ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Enjoy every moment you spend with your friends, classmates, and faculty members at SAS. I never expected three years at SAS to be this short, and when I was there on campus, I never thought that I would miss SAS this much.

But it’s only now, when we are unable to go back, that I realize how special the SAS community is. If I were given a chance to travel back in time, I would have cherished every moment there much more.

LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: The ultimate goal of my life is to be happy and make people I love happy.

Anna Catherine Zurbuch HOMETOWN: Middletown, Delaware FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: I really like to

act and I have been involved in many performances throughout my yeas here at SAS. One that really stood out for me was Sense and Sensibility the spring of my junior year. I have played many characters ranging from the childish to the overly dramatic but I had never played anyone as villainous as Fanny Dashwood. This was my favorite play because it really helped me step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Many of the things that she says in the play, I would never say in person, and that felt both scary and cool at the same time.

WHAT I MISS THE MOST DUE TO VIRTUAL TERM: I miss the time that I had with my friends and classmates. Even though seeing them even on a computer screen is nice, it doesn’t beat seeing them face to face.

FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS memory would have to be Semiformal sophomore year. All of my friends got together and had a lot of fun preparing and eating dinner and then playing games like Mafia and Truth or Dare into the night. We almost didn’t go to the dance, we were having so much fun.
