Celebrating the opening of including the Gough Family Theatre Nga Toi – Performing Arts Centre

Sunday 12 May 2024 and Fife Dance and Drama Studios

Theatre @StAC

At St Andrew’s College, Theatre and the Performing Arts are in our blood. Generations of StAC students have taken part in plays, concerts or musical productions in our 107-year history. Over 70 Senior productions and 25 Middle School productions have been staged since the first play Trial by Jury in 1939.

In the early years, teacher Antoinette Pocock produced several plays before the first St Andrew’s collaboration with Rangi Ruru Girls’ School The Pirates of Penzance in 1953, directed by Ross McPherson. By 1980 St Andrew’s had established a strong tradition of Drama and after Rozena Hallum joined the staff in 1983 St Andrew’s earned a reputation for producing some of the best school Drama in Christchurch. After girls were introduced to the Senior College in 1992, StAC no longer needed to seek the assistance of a girls’ school and productions became a fully StAC creation. In 2003 Julie Drummond assumed responsibility for Drama and productions and alongside Musical Directors Michael Lawrence and Bryan Botting, produced over 10 years of much-loved shows such as Carousel (2006), Grease (2007) and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (2009).

A new production team came together in 2014 and with the creative genius of Laurence Wiseman, Duncan Ferguson and Ginnie Thorner, a decade later we can celebrate many memorable shows including Suspect (2014), Anything Goes (2015), Cabaret (2016), Parade (2019) and Chicago (2021). In 2011 Dr Carolyn Cairns began the Ballet Academy at St Andrew’s and over the last 13 years this has become a key part of the StAC Performing Arts Programme with over 140 students involved. Thirteen Ballet productions have been staged delighting enthusiastic audiences.

By 2019 there was no doubt that StAC was ready for a new Theatre and Performing Arts Centre. With Board support and generous donations from our community, the five-year plan and build saw the dream become a reality with the completion of the Ngā Toi Performing Arts Centre incorporating the Gough Family Theatre and Fife Dance and Drama Studios.

In this wonderful new space we will continue to promote culture, nurture talent and foster a sense of community spirit here at StAC. By remembering those who have gone before and the magical times we have shared, we look forward to a future full of joy, discovery and creativity. This venue is dedicated to all students past, present and future who love to perform and to those who have enriched their lives beyond school, through enjoyment in the creative arts.
