ELECTIONS Students’ Association Elections We held the elections between February 26th and March 9th. 120 plus candidates stood for election, and all but one sabbatical race were contested. Five candidates ran for Association President, which resulted in plenty of competition and a very engaging race. Producing an engaging publicity strategy was a key goal for this year’s Election Committee. A series of videos was released in the run-up to nominations week which featured interviews with sabbatical officers, school presidents and student council members, as well as an introduction to the Union. The “Nudge” tool was released in January, which allowed students to anonymously encourage their friends to run, and hundreds of students did just that! Graphics were released more than once a week to inform students about the amazing opportunities that could be available to them if they ran for a Students’ Association position. During the voting period, we set up in-person voting booths, gave out “I voted” stickers and other freebies, and released countless gifs and graphics encouraging people to vote. These efforts and the hard work of the Elections Committee paid off with a high number of candidates and voters. We achieved an increase in student engagement in the elections, despite a larger student population, for the first time in a few years! 3,753 votes were cast, representing over 1/3 of the student body. Class Rep Elections Our 333 Class Reps were elected in September 2017. This year the elections were a tremendous success, receiving over 531 nominations throughout the academic Schools. Our most contested races occurred in the Schools of Geography and SD, Psychology and Neuroscience, and IR, with some posts receiving 9 candidates. Working with the School Presidents we put an emphasis on creating new Class Rep posts for part-time and evening degree students.
