the students’ association The University of St Andrews Students’ Association (“The Union”) is the heart of the student community. It is run by students, for students and broadly speaking, it operates in three areas: representation, student activities and events.
representation The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) is responsible for ensuring the students of St Andrews have their views heard throughout the University, the town and the wider world, on topics such as accommodation, education, sustainability, equal opportunities, welfare and more.
student activities The Students’ Association is responsible for funding, developing and supporting a wide range of extra-curricular activities for the student body, including Drama, Debating, Radio, Charities and Volunteering and there is a huge selection of over a hundred and forty societies!
events and services Keep an eye on our events page on our website for the latest gigs, DJ sets, live acts and festivals. We also have several student-led services, chiefly the Main Bar - the largest and best value in town - our clothing and stationery store (the Union Shop), the Union Cafés (new Café opening in semester 2) in the Union and on North Street. We also have Blackwells bookshop for all your academic needs!

sabbatical officers Each of these three areas are led by a “Sabbatical”‚ a student who has been elected to spend a year working full time for the Students’ Association. This year these four sabbaticals are: Chloe Hill (President, responsible for communications and media) Daniel Palmer (Director of Events and Services), Teddy Woodhouse (Director of Representation), Kelsey Gold (Director of Student Development and Activities) (pictured left to right) The Association is here for you throughout your time in St Andrews so if you want to run an event or start a society; if you have a problem; or indeed if you want to do anything in St Andrews, the Association and the people who help run it are available to help you in whatever way they can.
the sabbs will be holding welcome ta lks on tuesday 11th septem ber in your hall
What we are up to The Students’ Association (aka The Union) is an organisation with the sole purpose of furthering the student experience. It’s a registered charity, so all of the money we raise is locked into funding our student activities.
Right now we’re going through a Redevelopment to ensure that the building can meet the demands of our students, whether you’re in the Union for a casual drink or as a member of a society. We will continue to work on your behalf whether it’s through our amazing events or great value bars and The Union will remain open throughout the building work. We do so much it’s impossible to sum it all up in this guide, but you can add us on facebook, twitter and check out our new website. www.yourunion.net www.yourunion.net/facebook www.twitter.com/standrewsunion/family
What to expect in freshers’ week Welcome to St Andrews. It’s a unique place with a very special student experience and we hope to start that off in the best way possible with Freshers’ Week! We have a line-up of eleven events over 7th to 15th September, to help you get settled in and have lots of fun. The range includes our regular and most popular dance nights, including The Bop on Friday and the Athletic Union’s Sinners Sports on Wednesday. We go bigger and better with these events in Freshers’ Week so expect balloon drops, bubble machines and dazzling technical effects. Our programme brings world renowned talent to our Bubble in a corner of Fife, including Jameela Jamil from Radio 1, live performances still to be announced, Bradley and Paul from S Club are bringing it all back with their S Club Party at our new Cheese Night, ‘Rewind’. It’s not all dance nights though - we’re lucky to have a strong tradition of Acapella here in St Andrews, and they’ll be closing the week with some of their St Andrews tailored hits. The Scottish traditional favourite, the ceilidh, is on Wednesday evening and we have a comedian to be announced... There’s also a great range of alternative events in Venue 2 if you’re after something different. All of our events are designed for students, and our programme continues throughout the year. I look forward to welcoming you all in September. Daniel Palmer Director of Events and Services (doserv@st-andrews.ac.uk)
Freshers’ Fayre As a culmination to Freshers’ Week, we hold the Freshers’ Fayre. It’s a chance for you to explore the vast range of societies that the Union has to offer. It’s held throughout the Union, and is chock-a-block full of students incredibly passionate about anything and everything - whether it’s Doctor Who, Fine Food and Dining, our theatrical groups or even Nerf Society! This year as we have so many societies to showcase in the Union building we are holding two Fayres! The first runs from 11am to 2pm, and the second from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. Some of our groups, such as our sub-committees which cover our largest activities, will be there all day; but look out for our Fayre Guide either online at yourunion.net/freshersfayre or when you arrive. We’ve tried to group them into categories to make it easy for you to find what you want. Session 1 will include: Academic & Education / Political & Campaigning / Cultural & Faith / Arts, Media, & Music Session 2 will include: Activity & Recreation / Fan & Geek / Charitable, Humanitarian & Welfare /Food & Drink There’s no better way to get involved in University life than societies. Most of them have a small membership fee (typically £3) so bring some money along.

international students International students are an inseparable part of the St Andrews experience. In your halls, your classes, your societies, and your clubs, you’ll find international students play a fundamental role in shaping our community on the east coast of Fife. Never hesitate to drive right in and try everything that this incredible town has to offer. Coming to a new place can be stressful, especially when you’re coming from a different part of the world. We here in the Students’ Association support all students as they adjust into life in St Andrews, and we take particular note of making sure that international students feel welcome and supported throughout their time here. If you ever need support or feel like your needs as an international student aren’t being met by the University, I urge you to contact me with any issues or problems affecting you, no matter how small. how to get here Situated on the coast of Fife, St Andrews might not instantly seem the easiest place to get to, but is in fact relatively easy to reach via public transport. If you are travelling by train, the nearest station is Leuchars and there is at least one train every hour from both Edinburgh and Aberdeen. On arriving at Leuchars, you can reach St Andrews via bus (normally every 10-15min) and taxi. If you are travelling by plane, the nearest major airport is Edinburgh. To reach St Andrews from Edinburgh airport, take a bus from the airport to Haymarket station and then take a train up to Leuchars.
how to find us We are bang in the middle of town on St Mary’s Place (the biggest building on the street so you won’t miss us.) We’ve also got a traditional café on North Street in between the library and St Salvator’s Chapel, which is perfect for a quick snack on the way to a lecture.
