Welcome. I look forward to sharing your journey through one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. A remarkable array of intellectual, personal, academic and social opportunities are available to you here. I hope that you will make the most of them. If you do, I am confident that a few years from now you will look back upon your decision to study at St Andrews as the wisest of your life. Whether you come here from another part of Scotland, from elsewhere in the UK, or from overseas, you are joining a cosmopolitan community of students, staff and scholars who together represent over seventy-five nationalities. Students have been studying and teachers teaching here at St Andrews for 600 years. We are an institution rich in tradition yet with a keen eye to the future; my colleagues and I look forward to watching you make it your own. You have joined us at a very special time in the University’s history. We are approaching the apex of our 600th anniversary celebrations. Later in orientation week we will be hosting an Academic Celebration loosely modelled on the 500th anniversary celebrations. Please do sign up to take part in one of the many events that will take place on 13 and 14 September. (Further details can be found at: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/600/events/celebration) I hope that you will also enjoy reading The Life of Pi, a copy of which is being given to all entering undergraduate students as part of the University’s collaboration with the Booker Prize Foundation. We are looking forward to welcoming the author, Yann Martel, to St Andrews later this term to talk about his work and answer your questions. This Orientation Week Guide includes a programme of events designed to provide you with the information you need to find your way around and to settle in. Have a great time! Message from the

Welcome from the

Deans to all new students

President of the Students' Association

Professor Hugh MacDougall

Professor Nic Beech

Professor Ivor David

son

Professor Al Dearle

The Deans extend to you a very warm welcome to St Andrews and to the Faculty which you are about to enter. At St Andrews, we view our four Faculties as communities of scholars – students and staff together – working to advance knowledge and understanding, and to encourage critical thinking about the problems each discipline presents. As Deans, we require the highest standards of academic behaviour both of our colleagues and of our students, and we expect even the newest members of our Faculties to take seriously the responsibility we each hold for the quality of our collective endeavours. We hope that, during your studies here, you will share our passion for learning as well as our commitment to intellectual rigour. We are confident that, when you complete your degree, you will have developed a level of performance worthy of one of the best Universities in the world. We hope you will find St Andrews challenging and you will need to work hard and well to attain the highest grades. Your lecturers and tutors – who are world-class scholars – will of course help and guide you, and we anticipate that you will find St Andrews a friendly, collegial and supportive place in which to work.

Ultimately, however, responsibility for your own progress rests with you. You must approach your studies purposefully, with confidence, energy and ambition, right from the start. You must treat your time in St Andrews with respect: we expect you to accept the obligation to set yourself high academic standards – and to meet them. Our entire community will take pleasure in your success. We wish you the very best enjoyment of your studies and the greatest happiness in your personal development at St Andrews. We welcome you at the start of what we hope will be the most rewarding years of your life so far.

ill, niel Palmer, Chloe H From left to right: Da d ol and Kelsey G Teddy Woodhouse

The Students’ Association warmly welcomes you to St Andrews: I hope you’re all looking forward to getting started. Not only are you now all students of the University, you are also all members of the Students’ Association, commonly known as “the Union”. My name is Chloe and I’m one of five full-time elected ‘Sabbaticals’, and one part- time, who are here just for you this year. As President of the Students’ Association, I’m here to represent you and improve the student experience in St Andrews. I am the ultimate spokesperson for students and work with the Student Representative Council (SRC) on strategies affecting many areas of student life. I am also involved in preparing the multi-million pound redevelopment of the Union, which you will see is taking place at the moment. Teddy Woodhouse is your Director of Representation (DoRep). He works alongside the President in representing your views to the highest levels of the University and leading campaigns from the Students' Association. Teddy's role focuses heavily on improving the academic experience, promoting student wellbeing, ensuring equal opportunities for all students, and fostering student democracy. He works closely with the School Presidents to make sure that academic issues are effectively dealt with and with Student Services on issues relating to student welfare. Kelsey Gold is our Director of Student Development and Activities (DoSDA). She oversees our many and varied

2

student activities and societies. With 140+ societies, these cover everything from Doctor Who to Animal Welfare, Baking to Foreign Affairs. Kelsey and Daniel (see below) work closely to ensure that student events and activities have all the support that they need. Kelsey also works with University departments such as CAPOD and the Careers Centre to ensure that students can make the most of their time outside the classroom, from recognising their extra-curricular activities to opportunities to enhance their employability. Our Director of Events and Services (DoES) is Daniel Palmer, and it's his job to make sure you have the best time possible here. Daniel put our Freshers' Week lineup together, and will continue planning all of the major events this year, ending with graduation ball. He also supports students in putting on their own diverse range of events. Daniel oversees our commercial services – our shop, bars and cafes – to make sure that they are delivering for a student market and continue to fund the Association's activities. Scott Schorr is our Postgraduate President, a part-time role while he continues his studies. By identifying issues of current or potential interest to postgraduates, he ensures that postgraduates have a voice in processes that affect them within the Students’ Association and across the University. In addition to dealing with matters of representation, he will also be arranging a wide range of informative, academic and social events for the postgraduate community via the Postgraduate Society. Please also see p21 on the Freshers side of this guide for Jess Walker, President of the Athletic Union. I’m sure you’ll see us around this week: please don’t hesitate to come and say hello, or you can find us in our offices on the middle floor of the Union. There’s more information on the union at www.yourunion.net Enjoy your Freshers’ week! 3

Student Services

Welcome from

the Rector

What does it cover?

WHAT IS THE

ASC?

Dr Chris Lusk

Alistair Moffat

Along with the other four ancient Universities in Scotland, St Andrews elects a Rector. It is unique position. Even although the Rector is President of the University Court, the supreme governing body of the University, he or she is directly elected by the students alone. In October 2011, Alistair Moffat, a former student of the University, was returned as the 51st Lord Rector and he succeeds writers such as J.M. Barrie and Rudyard Kipling, Lord A.J. Balfour a former Prime Minister, Guglielmo Marconi the inventor, and John Cleese the comedian. This appointment will be in effect until October 2014. The Rector is entirely independent of the University administration and will ensure that the views and needs of students are represented at the highest levels. To discover what these are, the Rector holds regular open surgeries in the Mansfield building, across the street from the Students’ Union building, and anyone is free to come along to discuss any issue. No appointment is needed – only some patience as there may be a queue.

4

Alistair Moffat lives and works in the Scottish Borders and visits St Andrews regularly in term-time. He has an Assessor who, this year, is Pat Mathewson, a fourth year student who is in St Andrews all term time. Pat also sits on the University Court in his own right as Rector’s Assessor. Pat works closely with Alistair and can be contacted any time by e-mailing: pm434@st-andrews.ac.uk Alistair graduated from St Andrews in 1972 and recalls the experience vividly. In his Rectorial address, given in March this year, he concluded by remembering a less than glorious academic career and by offering some advice to his student constituents: It is an immense honour to be Rector of the University of St Andrews. Thank you for making it possible for me to come back. Thank God there are no exams but even so I promise to do much better. Unlike me, please pay some attention to your academic work, but not too much. By all means discover all you need to know from those who teach you – but most of all learn from each other and discover who you are and who you might become. This place is where you will begin to grow up, where all the wonderful possibilities of life begin to reveal themselves. Just as I was, you are lucky to be here, and even luckier to be here with each other.

THE ASC is your one-stop shop for all your queries, concerns, anxieties and simply where you go to seek out information. However there is a backup service to the ASC with a number of departments of professional staff from Student Services who can help you with financial, academic, international/immigration, disability, counselling and all personal matters, both on a daytime basis and through the Warden system at night. The ASC is the main gateway to these services. Student Services touch base with almost all students at some point during their time here, starting with the organisation of Orientation Week through to Graduation. Your role as a student is multi-faceted. Whether as a friend, a student, a flatmate, a tenant or a townsperson, you will be given opportunities to try new activities. Wherever you are starting now, over your study period you will develop and change into a new person with changing

perspectives. It is perfectly natural that you will meet barriers that you need assistance to overcome, but you will be given that help if you just ask. Don’t wander around looking lost – just ask our friendly staff! Your “Student Experience” will reward you depending on what you put in. If you meet problems, no matter how slight or serious, don’t run away from them. Come to the ASC, seek out the most appropriate person in Student Services, and tackle the issues so that they become part of your development and not a hindrance to your life. And tell us what you would like to see changed in the University… give us your feedback! This university is a community so help us develop it into a place you’ll be happy to hand on to the next generation in four years’ time.

Orientation 2013

Academic events for Saturday 7 to Monday 16 September For Freshers events please see page 1 on the reverse side of this guide.

The University of St Andrews was founded 600 years ago by scholars who had ambitions beyond the known, beyond themselves, and beyond Scottish borders. The celebration of this legacy of intellectual adventure will take place on Friday 13 September and Saturday 14 September 2013 when, following in the footsteps of our founders, we will bring some of the greatest minds of this generation to St Andrews to look beyond our 600th Anniversary to the future of education, and the ideas that will shape our future.

While all are welcome to the firework finale on Saturday, and to watch the historic academic procession on Friday, tickets to many events are limited due to space constraints. To be in with a chance of getting hold of a ticket, please go to: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/600/events/celebration

Music

9-12 September 2013

Music Centre The Music Centre offers a warm welcome to all students interested in any branch of music, whether as performers or listeners. The Centre provides various facilities and opportunities for students and non-students alike. We are open to everyone, from absolute beginners to experienced musicians, whether you want to take lessons, play in groups, practise or just come and listen. We have a team of around 30 visiting professional instrumental and vocal teachers, and a wide range of instruments available, including pianos in all the practice rooms, a harpsichord, organs, all orchestral instruments, guitars, viols, saxophones, drum kits and more. There is a Music Technology Studio, a well-stocked library and instrument lockers for those who require them. We present a regular series of lunchtime and evening concerts throughout the year, including 5 concerts by our Orchestra in Residence, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and this October we launch an exciting new festival of vocal music, St Andrews Voices, with performances by internationally acclaimed artists. Membership of the Centre is open to all students and costs just £30 a year from the University’s online shop: follow the membership link at: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/music Instrumental / Vocal Tuition and Scholarships If you would like to take lessons while you are studying at St Andrews, come to the office in the Centre to sign up. Teaching begins in Week 2. The first lesson is treated as an assessment lesson, after which you and your Teacher may decide whether or not you should continue. Lessons cost £15 for 30 minutes, and are payable in advance for each semester. A number of scholarships are available to cover the cost of instrumental or vocal tuition. Auditions for these are held during Week 1 (see below). Please see our Scholarships booklet for full details.

School of Management Groups We run a wide variety of ensembles, from opera to saxophone and baroque to modern jazz. Some of these groups are open to all without audition; others require auditions which take place in Orientation Week and Week 1 as shown below. There are also numerous student-run groups, many of which also hold auditions at the start of term. ConcertCard St Andrews’ students may purchase a ConcertCard for £30 which entitles them to free admission to all concerts presented by the Music Centre, the student-run Music Society and the 'town and gown' St Andrews Music Club and St Andrews Chorus – this represents exceptional value. This year an additional offer is in place where students can become Music Centre Members (£30) and purchase a ConcertCard at the same time for a total of £50, saving an extra £10.
