front elevation of the community center during the summer in Callicoon, NY
CALLICOON COMMUNITY CENTER Calicoon is a small TOWN in the upper part of the state of New York. Hills, rivers and strips of the tree line can be seen everywherearound the town. These natural features are the reason why hiking and outdoor activities have attracted visitors to Callicoon throughout its history. The tree lines in particular really captured my imagination when I first got there. They show the sense of clearly dividing an area into 2, like in the experience when you are hiking and suddenly leave the trees and a view opens up. Those 2 divided areas are not really separated, but rather hidden and then revealed by the trees. This project creates a new line on the old campground site: a line that operates like the tree line, first hiding and then revealing the river beyond.

The diagram shows different linear strips within the local area, which layer up and are sometimes hidden or revealed by the tree line. There is an agriculture strip and city strip, the camping strip and the line of the river. First, define a line of boundary. Aggregate 2 types of spaces on a single line, creating movement along the boundary. Link areas on both sides together by slits that cut through the spaces. These slits give you a glimpse of something on the other side. The building then become a linear moment between 2 zones where all of the program activities are organized. The two faces of the building are also very different to accentuate the experience of the transformation.
The idea is the house was built by the family who owned it. They carved the big box of foam out by themselves. So i used this idea to let the community be a part of constructing the community center. 2 Foot by 4 foot wood framed modules could be built locally and the community can put them in place and stack them up to form the front wall of the building. They are like big wood bricks, seamed together with simple wood trim. It then becomes a face of the community which everyone is a part of building.

view from the village green in Some New Homes for America
SOME NEW HOMES FOR AMERICA This village is divided into zones, one for single people, located in the center of the village, having a more formal appearance. There are then single family houses, spreading down both wings connected by corridors. Single people share on the ground floor, each having a private bedroom on the second floor, which connects two homes, as one larger dwelling. There is a court located outside that can be used by all, I see it as a great place for a BBQ. As you walk down both wings, there are corridors spreading and winding around the single family homes. There are smaller courts provided for kids to play and socialize together. They feel more like a backyard, than a front yard. Parents sit on their front porches sipping wine, watching their kids running around and playing, while having a chat with their neighbor on their porch.

This house is a private area where people can live together, attach the personal spaces on a large sharing space able to have lunch and dinner, watch TV, and cook intimately together. The house is one large sharing space. view from the Gowanus canal
GOWANUS GAP ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER & BOAT HOUSE Business and industry sprang up along the canal in late 1900s. It was once a hub for commercial shipping. By the middle of 20th century, the industrial along the canal decreased dramatically. Tons of manufacturing facilities had left, a post indutrial vacancy, thus many areas along the canal transform into commercial and residential use. Meanwhile, Gowanus is also home to a thriving arts and manufacturing scene. Plenty of young talented artist are moving in to this area. As a consequence, Gowanus neighbourhood is having various groups of people which seeking for their own needs. Gap has occured among these groups of youngsters, workers, residents, and new manufacturing firms in the area. The Gowanus gap project is trying to solve this gap by joining and bringing them together in a new gap in the same old place that once made up the gap.
