Poznań International Fair more and more beautiful every year
Pavilion 6A open!
Interview with President of the Board of Poznań International Fair (MTP) Andrzej Byrt, PhD
At the beginning of September, MTP celebrated the opening of the new pavilion – yet another trade fair investment... Andrzej Byrt Poznań International Fair (MTP), the leader of trade fairs in Poland, has developed very dynamically, smoothly executing new large investments. The development of Pavilion 6A started right after the end of the TAIZE European Youth Meeting (at the beginning of January 2010), so the works lasted only 7 months. This new exhibition facility has been constructed on the site of the former “Soviet” pavilion. It has enlarged the area of Hall 6A by over 3,600 sq m, creating the complex of pavilions of the total exhibition area equalling 11 thousand sq m. And this is not the end. In the future, it will be connected with the largest of the trade fair halls – Pavilion 5, whose area equals 14.5 thousand sq m. The result of this further development will be a complex offering a really impressive exhibition space – nearly 25 thousand sq m. It is going to be the fifth largest exhibition complex in Poland. It is worth knowing that the four other largest complexes can also be found at the MTP grounds. This, however, is not the end of our investment plans. We are thinking of executing a really large investment in the future. Poznań has grown to be one of the most important and greatest congress centres in Poland. This was possible thanks to the infrastructure and potential of the Poznań Congress Center. Last year it hosted 1900 congresses and meetings attended by 475 thousand participants – nearly twice as many as only two years ago. The organisational ambitions of the Center are to be met by the development of congress facilities. The nearest investment plans are made for the next two years. The project of the new hall aroused large interest and many inhabitants of Poznań have already nicknamed it “the Drop”. It is to be used also as a concert hall. Andrzej Byrt We already have the concept and soon we are going to have the construction plan of the new hall. It is going to be built between Hall 5 and the so-called “four-pack” and is going to be in the shape of an airborne drop, hence the nickname, which is really suitable for the building. But in the future we would like the hall to have its own, real name, especially that some of the existing halls are to be given names of their patrons. For example, the World Trade Center building is going to be named after Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski, the former Deputy Prime Minister of the Second Republic of Poland, the creator of the harbour in Gdynia and the Central Industrial Region (COP). We want the new hall to be used as a congress hall and an arena. It will be able to host 2,500 people. There is also going to be a three-level car park for 1000 cars. Poznań International Fair organises the biggest number of congresses and conferences in Poland, but on the other hand, Poznań has no place to which it can invite world-class stars. Hence, the concept of the congress hall and an arena in one, where great spectacles and music shows with modern stage designs could take place. Also the main entrance to the MTP grounds is to become more beautiful... Andrzej Byrt This is definitely the most spectacular of all the planned investments: the total reconstruction and modernisation of the front wall of the trade fair complex. It is going to extend from the present administration building, through the edifice of the Trade Center, up to the glazed Eastern Entrance. The shape is going to be airy and spatial, and – what is important – it is not going to hide the symbol of MTP – the famous trade fair spire. We are going to put a giant screen on the facade for multimedia projections. And when it comes to the interior, we are going to change the functional arrangement of the existing buildings. The newlyconstructed part is going to host the representative VIP zone: the reception hall, the club zone, conveniently connected with the rest of the buildings. The Trade Center will become more spacious. We are going to have new office areas upstairs, separated from the common space with glazed walls. The existing lifts are going to be replaced with panoramic ones. From the conference hall at the mezzanine of the Eastern Hall you will be able to admire the view of the city. The corridors of the new representative part of the MTP complex will lead us to the year 2013. Hence, I invite you all to Poznań. It is worth seeing our trade fair complex becoming so beautiful. Thank you for the interview. by Halina Buczkowska

It is going to be the fifth largest exhibition complex in Poland (the other four can also be found in Poznań). oznań International Fair has taken over 30.5% of the shares of Lublin International Fair SA (MTL), becoming a new and important shareholder in the Lublin trade fair company. At an extraordinary general shareholders’ meeting the shareholders of MTL made a decision on the additional issue of the company’s shares. As a result of this decision shares worth PLN 14 million have been sold to Poznań International Fair. The newly issued shares have also been bought by the present shareholders of the company: the Local Self-Government of the Lubelskie Province bought shares worth PLN 2 million, the Municipality of Lublin bought shares worth PLN 16.8 million in the form of contribution in real property – the plot of 6 hectares. The present ownership system of MTL is
as follows: the Local Self-Government of the Lubelskie Province has 26.5% of the shares, the Municipality of Lublin – 42.5 % of the shares, Poznań International Fair – 30.5%, the rest of the shareholders – 0.5% of the shares. The decision on extending the ownership composition of the company was made in order to facilitate further development of MTL through the use of financial resources coming from the Operational Programme “Development of Eastern Poland in the period 2007-13”, co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund. The acquired resources will be earmarked on developing the MTL infrastructure, which is to result in the development and enhancement of the position of MTL in the market of fair trade organisers.

Tourism festival in Poznań October is a hot month for the tourist industry – for 21 years it has been the time of the greatest tourist industry festival – the TOUR SALON Trade Fair of Regions and Tourist Products. For more than two decades this trade fair has not only maintained the position of the leader in the market, but also developed and expanded by new segments and events. Traditionally, the trade fair is a meeting place for the representatives of all the Polish and many foreign regions, Internet portals, publishers, travel agencies, tour operators, carriers and exhibitors at special exhibitions, such as Health SPAace, Business Tourism, EXTREME – Active Tourism. TOUR SALON
Conferences, panels, workshops, exhibitions TOUR SALON is not only a colourful space filled with music and smells of regional specialities, where you can showcase tourist products and make profitable business contacts. It is also a place where important issues are discussed, inspiring conversations and meetings are held and experiences and ideas exchanged. At the conference on “How to effectively lose clients in the tourist industry” organised by the advertising tourist service otoWakacje.pl (part of the Allegro Group), the listeners will learn such useful information as how the description of an offer in a catalogue influences the client’s decision, why an offer in the Internet must be minimal and why in Sharm-el-Sheikh hotels bartenders are Catholic and not Muslim. Poznań Convention Bureau and Poznań Congress Center are inviting to a conference devoted especially to the MICE industry. The programme of the conference entitled “The development of the Poznań infrastructure for the needs of the MICE industry – Poznań as the capital of business tourism” is going to include, among others, the presentation of modernisation and development plans for Poznań Congress Center for the period of 20112014 and the presentation of the development

As part of the new special space – TOUR SALON AIRPORT – a conference is going to take place to summarize the 10-year cooperation between Poznań’s Ławica Airport and Frankfurt’s Fraport Airport. Traditionally, conferences and thematic workshops are going to be held, organised by the Polish Tourist Organisation (POT), the Polish Chamber of Tourism (PIT), Regional and Local Tourist Organisations, as well as Polish Tourists Information Centres. There are also going to be presentations and thematic discussions prepared by the exhibitors of the fair. Apart from that, the wide audience may expect a number of pleasant surprises in the form of numerous competitions, interesting exhibitions and – naturally – meetings with travellers.
Welcome to Bulgaria and Mazovia The Partner Country for this year’s edition of TOUR SALON is Bulgaria, charming with its beauty and diversity and attracting more and more tourists every year, both in summer and in winter. The Partner Region selected for TOUR SALON 2010 is Mazovia. This year’s Mazovia presentation refers to the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin’s birth. At the stand of the Local Self-Government of the Mazovian Province you will be able to learn about the region’s tourist offers and will be encouraged to
get acquainted with the beauty of the region’s nature and landscapes.

Anna Myślak Manager of TOUR SALON The novelty of this year’s trade fair will be that the best tourist products are going to be awarded with MTP Gold Medals. For nearly 30 years MTP Gold Medals have been the trophies that have made competing in the market easier and have symbolised the good quality, modernity and innovativeness of products. The companies that have won the right to mark their products with MTP Medals confirm the symbol’s marketing significance. Natural and anthropogenic values of regions, historical traditions, places of meaningful events, manifestations of folk culture, rites, remains of material culture as well as contemporary achievements such as buildings and infrastructure facilities – they all can add to their market value by winning the trophy.

First Poznań Travel and Photography Festival This year’s TOUR SALON and the Tubyliśmy.pl tourist and travel portal have been working to organise the first Poznań Travel and Photography Festival. The most important events constituting the Festival are going to take place at the ground of Poznań International Fair. As part of the Festival there are going to be workshops – held for the wide public and offering each amateur traveller information on how to travel fast, safely and effectively by hitchhiking, and how to take professional photographs.
20-21.10.2010
Moreover, the Festival visitors will be able to see a fashion show inspired by trips to exotic edges of the world and learn how to play African drums. The trade fair is also going to include the ceremony of awarding Golden Feet statuettes 2009/2010. The organisers explain that they have chosen feet as the symbol, because they make it possible for people to discover the world and symbolise the freedom of movement. The Poznań ceremony is going to be the culmination of the plebiscite during which for four months the Internet users were able to vote for more than forty travels grouped into five categories: Water, Mountains, Land, On Wheels and Special Award. Among the guests of the festival there will be two this year’s conquerors of the Seven Summits – Martyna Wojciechowska and Anna Lichota.

DISCOVER POLAND The aim of DISCOVER POLAND is to create efficient platform for communication between foreign representatives of the tourist industry and Polish entrepreneurs offering Polish tourist products and services. These matchmaking meetings are going to be a perfect opportunity for Polish companies to establish long-term cooperation with tour operators from the whole Europe – and all this with not much effort on the part of the participants. Neither sellers nor buyers have to lose time on exacting searches for partners to talk to or on planning meetings – this is going to be done by the trade fair or-
ganisers. All you need to do is to report your willingness to take part in the project and turn up at a specific time and place where you will be able to make new business contacts. This year, the organisers of DISCOVER POLAND are putting particular emphasis on associations and companies dealing with adventure tourism and organisations associating lovers of active tourism such as: horse riding tourism, canoeing trips, agritourism, ecotourism or cycling tourism. To complement the trade fair offer, the organisers have prepared a programme of accompanying events, consisting of: conferences, thematic workshops, presentations, shows held at the trade fair pool, meetings with famous sailors, competitions for the audience and a tavern where chanty stars are going to perform. Year after year we have observed growing interest of Polish and foreign guests in products showcased at BOATSHOW. This gives the exhibitors wonderful possibilities of establishing direct contacts with new business partners. The fact that the trade fair is held in autumn is very favourable for those exhibitors who present novelties for the upcoming season. For clean streets Clean streets, squares, pavements and parks are no more elements of an ideal, imaginary city but an obvious necessity. This explains why the subject of maintaining cleanness and the latest offer of municipal equipment showcased at the KOMTECHNIKA International Trade Fair of Municipal Technologies arouses so much interest of local self-governments. This year’s, third exposition of KOMTECHNIKA seems especially attractive. Manufacturers and suppliers of tractors suitable for municipal purposes, trucks and special purpose vehicles, as well as companies making specialised bodies and semi-trailers for trucks are going to present an especially rich offer of products. The companies are going to show new models of vehicles designed for transport, waste collection and disposal of liquid waste, sweepers, vehicles for winter maintenance of roads and squares, as well as greenery and cleanness maintenance equipment. One of the interesting events taking place as part of the trade fair is the City Truck Show – spectacular presentations of municipal vehicles in motion.

CAVALIADA EXPO CAVALIADA EXPO is the business dimension. The invitation to take part in the trade fair is addressed to companies dealing with the sale and production of horse riding equipment, also to representatives of sectors related to equestrianism, horse breeding and caring for horses, as well as tourism and rehabilitation. The first edition of CAVALIADA is going to put special emphasis on promoting horse riding as an active leisure activity. Among the entities invited to take part in the event are tourist companies, agritourism farms and equestrian centres organising horse riding holidays. And because the contact with horses
CAVALIADA SPORT means pure sports emotions provided by the International Horse Show Jumping Competition over Obstacles CSI2*-W, with the pool of awards worth CHF 90,000. The prestige of the competition is certain to attract many riders from Poland and the whole Europe. In two most important Poznań Cup competitions, riders are going to compete for high financial bonuses and scores for the prestigious ranking of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports. The Grand Prix competition is also going to be one of the World Cup qualifying rounds. The whole event has been planned to be interesting for both horse riding experts and those who only rarely watch horse jumping competitions. The three days of CAVALIADA Sport is going to abound in two-phase and ordinary competitions. For instance, there is going to be a powerskip jumping competition in which the obstacle – a wall – in the last tournament may be as high as over 200 cm, and a speed contest accompanied by especially selected music.
Dominik Nowacki Manager of CAVALIADA Sport and Show Last year, Poznań International Fair organised the Poznań Cup – All-Poland Indoor Show Jumping Competition over Obstacles – CSN*** for the first time. At that time, we already mentioned that in the future we would like to create an event that was going to be successful thanks to professional marketing and good communication with representatives of the industry. Since last year we had little time for preparation we were only able to organise the all-Poland competition but we announced that the following year the event was going to be at a much higher level. And we have kept the promise by organising this year’s CAVALIADA divided into three parts: Expo, Sport and Show. What is also very important, the event is going to include the International Horse Show Jumping Competition over Obstacles CSI2*-W.
CAVALIADA SHOW CAVALIADA SHOW will entertain the audience between competitions and other trade fair events. The programme is prepared in such a way that it should be attractive for both experts and families with children. One of the attractions is going to be the show given on a circuit by a French group called Horse Man Team, which is famous in Europe but has not performed yet in Poland. Apart from that, visitors will be able to admire shows of equestrian vaulting and – always spectacular – cart competitions. by Wioleta Aleksandrowicz 3/2010

Leaders speak out
T
he cooperation between science and industry is the main factor determining the increase in innovativeness and the implementation of principles of the knowledge-based economy. Poland, as a country of a large intellectual potential, achieves high results when it comes to scientific research in various fields. What is important is that information on new solutions reach a wide range of potential users. Poznań International Fair (MTP) has for years been a place of a specific symbiosis of science and business. The leading Polish research institutes, research and development units, universities and representatives of companies and institutions supporting innovation and the transfer of technologies take part in many trade fair events. Such events serve the communication and exchange of experiences between the world of science and the world of industry. They create opportunities for making the first contacts that are often maintained in the future.
Marriage of science and business EwA Mańkiewicz-Cudny President of the Polish Federation of Engineering Associations – NOT
It is very valuable that Poznań International Fair (MTP) has engaged into creating the space for talks and establishing contacts between representatives of the two worlds – science and business. Trade fairs are perfect opportunities for them to meet. ITM Poland attracts a very broad representation of industrial enterprises and the accompanying Research for Industry Exhibition gathers science and research centres presenting their offers. Such direct meetings make entrepreneurs realise what potential lies in the cooperation with the world of science. Despite the development of multimedia means of communication, personal contact remains irreplaceable. It provokes the change of mentality and this is what the dialogue between industry and science needs the most. The Polish Federation of Engineering Associations – NOT is very much engaged in trade fair initiatives. In cooperation with MTP we organise Engineering Fora, at which we try to inform about benefits coming from the cooperation by showing our achievements in the field of implementing targeted projects for small and medium enterprises. Thanks to the agreement made with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, NOT has become the platform supporting innovative solutions in SMEs. We look for interesting projects that have chances to be implemented, provide financial support to enterprises interested in R&D and oversee the process of implementation of a given solution until the assumed results are achieved. Naturally, there are no immediate results when it comes to innovations – it is a long-term process. Nevertheless, judging from the perspective of the last couple of years, I think that the initiatives of MTP and all its partners, including NOT have largely contributed to the improvement of the Polish position in the ranking of countries that implement innovations.

Support for Polish researchers Bogdan Smólski
Head of the National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR) The main aim of the activities of the National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR) is to support Polish research units and enterprises in the creation and practical application of innovative solutions. What is this support about? Innovativeness is definitely one of the prior factors determining the economic growth. It is powered by research, innovations and abilities to commercialise them. One of the government instruments that stimulate innovative processes in Poland and make it possible for enterprises to work out their own innovative solutions are programmes monitored and financially supported by the National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR). For instance, as part of Technological Initiative 1 of IniTech programme we distributed grants for scientific research or developmental works aimed at industrial implementation of the “research phase”, as well as for preparing the results of the “research phase” to be applied in business, i.e., the so-called “preparatory phase of implementation”. The financial resources were available for: entrepreneurs, research units and research consortia. Another project the Centre is involved in is the KadTech programme whose aim is to strengthen the cooperation between enterprises and highly qualified experts from the world of science and research. The programme is addressed to micro, small and medium enterprises executing projects which involve the preparation and/or implementation of technological innovations based on commercial utilisation of research results. The National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR) finances projects that are to serve the improvement of the competitiveness of the Polish economy and can contribute to using the achievements of the Polish research sector. At the largest in Poland trade fair of modern technologies for industry – ITM Poland – the National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR) was able to present the results of innovative projects to representatives of research units, scientists and entrepreneurs.
Where science meets modern industry Bogdan Marciniec
Manager of Poznań Science and Technology Park (PPNT) This year, Poznań Science and Technology Park – the first centre of this kind in Poland – is celebrating its 15th anniversary. What have you managed to achieve over this period of time? What activities have you engaged in to transfer new solutions to Polish enterprises? Over the last 15 years, research centres operating in the fields of chemistry, physics, telemedicine, linguistics, geography, geology and archaeology have developed their services. The park hosts also the registered offices of more than 50 innovative companies. What complements the creation of this place where science and modern industry meets are innovation supporting activities, including the transfer of technologies and the promotion of academic entrepreneurship. Among the research centres operating at the grounds of Poznań Science and Technology Park Adam Mickiewicz University Foundation (PPNT FUAM) there is Poznań Radiocarbon Laboratory, which is an innovative part of Adam Mickiewicz University Foundation. In cooperation with AMS Laboratory, managed by Adam Mickiewicz University, which also has its premises at the grounds of PPNT, the two laboratories together create a world class centre where it is possible to date archaeological, geological and biochemical samples with the use of the carbon 14 test method. This fact increases the prestige of the centre as there are only 15 places that provide this sort of services in Europe and only 30 in the whole world. At the same time, thanks to Advanced Chemical Technology Center belonging to PPNT FUAM, small and big enterprises are able to commission local researchers to develop new technologies or search for innovative solutions in the field of chemistry. Spatial and Social-Economic Analysis Center, on the other hand, transfers modern research methodology developed in the field of geography to the realm of economic practice, offering research and development services in the area of planning. Waste-Park represents an innovative approach aimed at optimizing waste man-

agement, whereas Speech and Language Technology Laboratory is working on an automatic system of analysis, processing and recognition of speech and speakers. Representatives of the scientific circles of Poznań universities and local entrepreneurs can also take advantage of services offered by Regional Contact Point of the EU Framework Programs, also operating within the structure of PPNT FUAM. The activities of Regional Contact Point involve mainly professional consulting services for ideas and project applications and support for projects while they are executed; it also provides consulting services on raising and accounting financial resources supporting the participation in EU Framework Programs. Apart from that, RPK offers also a number of training courses thanks to which many Poznań citizens have learned about the advantages and opportunities coming from the participation in EU Framework Programs. Poznań Science and Technology Park has for many years cooperated with Poznań International Fair (MTP). Does this cooperation translate into your statutory activities? And if so – how? To what extent your attending the ITM Poland trade fair helps you support Polish entrepreneurs interested in modern technical and technological solutions? Our cooperation with MTP started as early as in 1998, when – for the first time – an exhibition featuring the achievements of Polish science was organised under the name of “Science for the Economy”. The pavilion was organised by the Information Processing Centre (OPI) and – as PPNT and OPI operated in the common FEMIRC network (Foundation for Polish Science) – new ideas concerning the promotion of the offer of science appeared, along with the theme of innovation at Poznań International Fair. First, PPNT put forward the idea of organising International Technology Transfer Days and then, the proposal of combining the exhibition featuring the offer of Polish science with media events, seminars and public debates. Nowadays, joining the activities of Poznań scientific circles and the business is mostly the job of Technology Transfer Department of PPNT FUAM, which cooperates with Poznań International Fair. It is due to the activities of Technology Transfer Department that entrepreneurs can count on consulting on the process of technology transfer, its legal aspects and sources of financing innovations. Over the last years, a common initiative of MTP and PPNT has been the organisation of the Centre for Consultancy at the ITM Poland trade fair. At the Centre for Consultancy entrepreneurs may obtain free information on the subject of sources of financing investments or innovations, support in finding business or technological partners, information on participating in the 7th Framework Program, business activities, including academic entrepreneurship, protecting intellectual property and cooperation with the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) project. Year after year our stand at ITM Poland has been gaining popularity. In 2010 more than 50 institutions took advantage of its services during individual meetings.
Polish solutions widely promoted Roman Siczek
Head of the Team Technology Partnership Polska, Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements (PIAP)
The idea of Technology Partnership appeared more than ten years ago in the Danish Technological Institute – one of the oldest (nearly one hundred years old) and best known institutions of this kind in Scandinavia. Today Technology Partnership is a global network of knowledge and technology transfer and the success of the initiative in Denmark led to the creation of its local branches in several countries in the world. The representative of TP in Poland is the Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements (PIAP), which is considered to be one of the most innovative Polish companies. Technology Partnership Polska is focused on supporting Polish entrepreneurs in increasing innovativeness and competitiveness, using the knowledge of (not only Polish) experts. The scope of our activities is complex and diverse – from looking for competitive suppliers of raw materials or equipment, through implementing optimising processes aimed at increasing efficiency, to supplying unique technologies and innovative products. For the last 5 years we have gained and satisfied many clients and significantly enlarged the circle of experts from the best Polish and foreign institutions who cooperate with us, searching for solutions for various industries. We have executed about 200 projects and can now say that our activity has so far been successful. It should also be mentioned that, apart from our role as an intermediary between the world of science and the world of production, we are also engaged in another activity, involving the organisation of workshops, seminars, Knowledge Trade Fairs and excursions to innovative enterprises and this additional activity has also resulted in increasing innovation-oriented attitudes of enterprises. This year we presented ourselves at ITM Poland, at the Research for Industry Exhibition. In my opinion, trade fairs are some of the best opportunities to show innovative solutions. The proximity of other exhibitors is very important. Thanks to this proximity, guest visiting very specialist stands and other exhibitors can – even if only by chance – get to know also the Research for Industry exhibitors.
A big problem, impeding the transfer of new solutions to enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises, is the lack of sufficient financial resources for such investments. Can technology credits from commercial banks solve the problem? Technology credits are a good idea for entrepreneurs implementing new solutions in their companies and soon – thanks to risk reduction – they will be more accessible. We know that most of new investments are implemented with the use of external capital and the implementation of innovative technological solutions involves increased risk and usually also longer payback period. A technological credit that may be repaid even up to 70% from the resources of measure 4.3 Operational Programme Innovative Economy for the period of 2007-2013 is definitely an attractive alternative to traditional investment credits. So far, there has been a rule that the repayment of the credit is dependent on the achieved sales of goods or services that are the result of the implementation of a given technology. On the one hand, this has an impact on the dynamics of the return on invested capital and reduces the company’s burden with respect to the credit taken. On the other hand, the rule makes the credit risk grow. The changes in the act of 30 May 2008 on Certain Forms of Support of Innovative Activity, including the introduction of the rule that the support from measure 4.3 is paid directly after the end of the investment, will significantly decrease the investment risk. This, in turn, will make technological credits much more attractive instruments for both banks and entrepreneurs. For the first time, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego took part in this year’s Research for Industry Exhibition, presenting the offer of credits for SMEs. What is your opinion on the bank’s presence at the trade fair? Our presence at the Research for Industry Exhibition was a very good decision. Our stand was visited by representatives of several dozen companies interested in financing innovative technological solutions. Most of them are potential applicants or advisors whose clients may be or already are interested in applying for technological credits. Many entrepreneurs consulted with us particular solutions, almost ready projects. Among them, there was a large group of people we invited to our stand ourselves or through crediting banks, but visitors and the trade fair participants were just as numerous. by Halina Buczkowska 3/2010

The participants of the 8th Engineering Forum, on the other hand, discussed advanced technologies positively stimulating the economic growth. The programme of the Forum included four discussion panels concerning, among others, advanced technologies in economic practice and targeted projects of an especially high level of innovativeness in the sector of SMEs. Another important point of the programme was the convention on the “21st Century Rail Transport for Poland” that accompanied the ITM Poland fair. Among those who took part in the discussion on the condition of the Polish railway transport, new technologies, infrastructure and necessary directions, were Polish and European MPs, members of the Sejm Committee for Infrastructure, independent experts, representatives of industry associations and research units.
Honourable awards The ceremony of giving prestigious awards was a very remarkable moment of the fair. The best and the most innovative products were awarded MTP Gold Medals. The winners were chosen by the competition jury consisting of the greatest scien-
tific experts from industries represented at ITM Poland. This year, the competition for a Gold Medal in the category of the “transfer of the results of scientific research into economic practice” was judged for the fourth time. At the same time, the stands that had been best designed and prepared for the implementation of the exhibitors’ marketing strategies were awarded Acanthus Aureus awards.
Media about ITM Poland The greatest trade fair of modern solutions for the industry – ITM Poland – aroused significant interest of the local, national and industry media, which eagerly presented the subject of innovation in the context of their contribution to counteracting the results of the economic downturn. What was repeatedly emphasized was the significance of trade fair meetings for the promotion of advanced technologies and the improvement of Polish position in the ranking of countries appreciating and spreading innovation. In media reports from ITM Poland, the trade fair was repeatedly referred to as the “factory of the future”.
For the tenth time, an integral part of ITM Poland was the Research for Industry project, whose aim is the promotion of applied science and the transfer of its achievements into economic practice. At the trade fair, research and development units, universities, companies and institutions supporting innovation and the transfer of technologies all presented their offers addressed to the world of industry. The participation of research units in the trade fair was financially supported by the Minister of Science and Higher Education. Research for Industry is a place where experts representing various industry sectors can meet numerous representatives of applied science. It is also a unique opportunity to learn about many prototypes of devices and innovative technologies. Rapeseed industry trade fair
Rapeseed from A to Z The EURO-RZEPAK – Exhibition of Machines and Devices for Rapeseed Production and Processing is the only such meeting of the rapeseed sector in Poland. This year’s edition took place in Łosiów in the Opolskie Province and was organised by the Polish Association of Rapeseed Producers (KZPR), the Opole Agricultural Advisory Centre (OODR) in Łosiów and Poznań International Fair (MTP). EURO-RZEPAK
I
t is no coincidence that the event was held in the Opolskie Provicne, as the region is considered to be Poland’s rapeseed production belt. The event was held under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Marshall of the Opolskie Province and the TopAgrar Polska publisher.
More than just exposition During the meeting of the rapeseed industry held in June the exhibitors presented a rich offer of products, including plants, machinery, tools and agricultural equipment, chemistry for agriculture and equipment and materials for rapeseed processing. The trade fair was accompanied by professional presentations, lectures and discussion panels. The business talks held at EURO-RZEPAK were accompanied by a specialist conference held at the same time. The main subjects discussed at the conference included: the prospects of the production of oil plants in Europe, the experience of Poland in the production of bio-components and biofuels and the certification of rapeseed as a raw material for the
production of bio-components. The first edition of the EURO-RZEPAK conference gathered an incredibly numerous group of more than 200 owners and workers of farms producing rapeseed, agricultural companies, rapeseed processing entrepreneurs and companies contracting and buying rapeseed.
Demonstration plots Under the supervision of experts from the Opole Agricultural Advisory Centre (OODR) Experimental Plots were prepared to be one of the main attractions of the trade fair. The Experimental Plots presented more than 70 field trials of rapeseed. Complete programmes of protection and fertilisation were shown. Nearly 30 chemical and seed companies showcased their seed grain and chemical products for rapeseed. The trade fair vis-
itors had a unique opportunity to get acquainted in practice with a wide range of products from the rapeseed sector and to compare various protection programmes. The field presentations attracted the trade fair audience – more than 500 farmers interested or already involved in the rapeseed production took part in the event.
Discussion panels EURO-RZEPAK ended with a closed debate with the representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Marshall’s Office of the Opolskie Province, Province Governors of the Opolskie and Dolnośląskie regions, experts from the Polish National Chamber of Biofuels (KIB) and the Institute of Plant Protection (IOR). Among the subjects discussed were: the future of the Common Agricultural Policy after 2013 in the context of the stabilisation of the production of oil plants, new challenges related to the implementation of the EU directives concerning renewable energy sources, with a particular emphasis placed on the sector of biofuels and the integrated farming of industrial plants, including oil plants.

Unique outdoor trade fair Large demonstration areas where the exhibitors presented the work of their forest equipment in practice, professional service at the exposition and information stands and professionals visiting the trade fair – this is what this year’s EKO-LAS looked like. The most exciting element of the trade fair, attracting a great number of visitors every day, was undoubtedly shows prepared by the exhibitors.
The shows featured the work of harvesters and forwarders, skidding trailers, cranes and sawsplitters. There were also shows of loading and unloading of timber and the cutting of trees. Those exhibitors who presented their offers in a specially prepared tent also organised shows. The subject of one of them was the use of protective clothes and helmets when working in a forest.
Next edition of Forest Forum – “Man-Forest-Wood” As in the previous years, also this year the shows and expositions of the exhibitors were complemented by the Forest Forum, this time held under the motto of “Man-Forest-Wood”. Among the subjects discussed at the Forum were: the forms of performing forest works from the perspectives of particular professions, new techniques and technologies applied in forest works, forestry and land management. At the Forum, “Forest Quality Mark” Certificates were given. Glow of gold medals The exhibitors of EKO-LAS competed in the competition organised by Poznań International Fair (MTP) for one of the most prestigious awards – the MTP Gold Medal. This year, for the first time, in accordance with the changed form of the competition, the jury awarded the winners before the trade fair. the significance of the durability of food products for consumers and manufacturers. Speakers from the Poznań Institute of Logistics and Warehousing explained to the listeners the methods of increasing efficiency and competitiveness of packaging companies by using financial resources offered by the European Union.
Innovative R&D department At the conference on “Innovations in logistics” organised by the “Eurologistics” publisher, innovations in the world of logistics were presented, along with ideas on how to improve products and services implemented in logistics companies. This year’s meeting was held under the motto of “the whole world is your R&D department”. The conference allowed the participants to get acquainted with new technologies supporting the management and archiving of documents in a company. The professionals that came to the event learned about green technologies for vehicle fleets, the possibilities offered by modern Internet platforms and how to use standards of transport packaging in their companies.
PakStar and Student PakStar Competitions The award and distinction giving ceremony of the National Packaging Competition PakStar 2010 and the National Competition of Packaging Design Student PakStar 2010 also took place at the trade fair. Both competitions were held under the honorary auspices of Minister of Economy Waldemar Pawlak. The organisers of the event – the Polish Packaging Research and Development Centre (COBRO), the Polish Chamber of Packaging (PIO), MTP, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the www.opakowania.pl website awarded the best in the field of packaging design – those whose work contributes to improving packaging. The winners of PakStar and Student PakStar are going to take part in WorldStar and WorldStar Student Award international packaging competitions organised by the World Packaging Organisation.
In4Log – logistics show During the four-day long educational project called In4Log Innovations for Logistics 2010, in a model distribution centre of the area of 600 sq m, live shows were held to present the work of a warehouse
and equipment that supports logistics processes. With the cooperation of thirteen technological partners participating in the project, all the warehouse equipment was integrated into an efficient logistics system. A typical process of goods flow in a warehouse was shown thanks to the technologically advanced installation presenting modern storing systems, internal transport and completion of goods. In each of the warehouse zones, equipment and technologies – often pioneering ones – integrated in innovative systems were presented. The co-organiser of the event was Medialog – the publisher of such industry journals as “Top Logistyk” and “Magazynowanie i Dystrybucja”.
Sztaplar Show The Sztaplar Show is a show and an exhibition of storage technologies and IT solutions in the modern high-storage warehouse combined with the spectacular forklift competition and forklift operators. During the jubilee 10th edition of the Sztaplar Show the technical capacities of forklifts of almost all brands sold in the country were presented. Operators representing the suppliers or manufacturers of forklift trucks competed
on a specially prepared manoeuvring yard with a 1,500 sq m. obstacle course. The competition was crowned with a ceremony at which winners of the Sztaplar Show 2010 Cup were awarded in three categories of lifting capacity: up to 1.5 tonnes, up to 2 tonnes and over 2 tonnes. After the forklift competition it was time for forklift operators to demonstrate their skills in operating the machines in other, non-standard, competitions. Another attraction of the event was the Driving School organised by “Nowoczesny Magazyn”, which gave the trade fair visitors an opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a forklift and undergo a quick learning session under the supervision of an instructor. Those who completed the course received a certificate. One of the organisers of the event was FORUM Press – the publisher of such industry magazines as “Nowoczesny Magazyn”, “Logistyka a Jakość” and “Transport i Spedycja”.
