Sabrina Żymierska Manager of Poznań Congress Center For decades MTP has been an unquestionable leader among the trade fair centers in Poland. Today, at the fair premises we have the most modern congress center in Poland. How did it all start? The history of organising conferences by MTP is actually the history of organizing trade fairs. At first, conferences were held only during trade fair events but they have gained independence with time. Also informal meetings, banquets, integration meetings became more numerous as it turned out that exhibition pavilions were perfect to host them. Today, the vicinity of trade fair infrastructure enables us to carry out unusual events, such as concerts or theatrical performances. Appropriate adaptation quickly turns an exhibition hall into a sports competition arena, a plenary hall, an auditorium or a place for prayer meetings. This activity developed so dynamically that in 2005 a special section was separated in MTP – Poznań Fair Congress Center. Four years later the section turned into a department, changing its name into Poznań Congress Center and gaining autonomy. The best proof of the professionalism of PCC employees, our experience and the satisfaction of our clients is the “Professional Congress Organiser” certificate granted to the Center by the Polish Tourist Organization (POT) and the Convention Bureau of Poland. The certificate confirms that our Center is on the list of recommended congress and conference organisers, meeting the highest standards. In 2009 we were granted the certificate for the second time. The meetings that have been organised by Poznań Congress Center over the last several years have had the scale unprecedented both in the city and in the country. PCC has really spread wings. Have you been thinking of international promotion of the Center? We are an unquestionable leader in the country so entering the international market is just a natural next step. We are especially interested in gaining prestigious and large conference and congress events for more than 2 thousand participants. Therefore one of our basic activities is the promotion of PCC at business tourism fairs. Twice a year, in cooperation with Poznań Convention Bureau, we take part in trade fairs addressed to professionals, such as IMEX in Frankfurt and EIBTM in Barcelona. The common promotion of conference facilities and the city in which they are located is extremely important, as in most cases it is the advantages of cities that play a crucial role when clients choose a location for an event. Unfortunately, although there are many things we can be proud of, we are little recognizable as a city. Taking part in international fairs enables us to become visible in the international market and make direct contacts with the organisers of events – and contacts are, naturally, crucial – especially in the sector of organising meetings. We also promote PCC in foreign industry journals. What are the key aims of the PCC rebuilding that is just about to start? Today, our Center with its infrastructure is the leader in the industry, but that does not mean that equally big conference facilities cannot be constructed in other Polish cities – Cracow, Gdańsk or Katowice. Therefore, we want to anticipate the actions of our competitors. When planning the development of PCC we tried to listen to our clients. What is the most important for them is the possibility to organise large events, a plenary hall for more than 2 thousand people and an exhibition area in the vicinity. The accompanying infrastructure is also important – a leisure and catering area, restaurants, a VIP zone, a press center and the availability of parking places. After the development we are going to be able to provide all that in the highest standard.

Great experience great opportunities Poznań Congress Center has already been the host of one of the greatest political congresses in the world – the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP-14. The Center has also hosted the 32nd European Youth Meeting organised by the Taizé Community and has been the venue of great music shows, such as Ça Ira – a three-act opera by Roger Waters – a composer, a bassist and the leader of Pink Floyd. In a year, the PCC is going to have its premises ready for more events, such as, for instance, the 32nd World Carrier Pigeon Olympiad with its 30 thousand participants and the meetings hosted in Poland as the country holding the EU presidency. In two years, a football fan zone is going to be created here for EURO 2012. Such is Poznań Congress Center – modern, dynamic and the greatest congress center in Poland.

O

rganisational challenges are getting more numerous and demanding for Poznań Congress Center. Last year PCC hosted 1900 congresses and conventions that together attracted 475 thousand participants – nearly twice as many as two years ago. They were both large events, as the 13th International Congress of the Polish Cardio‑ logical Society, which gathered the total number of 5 thousand people, and smaller business meetings. Many events are regularly held at the PPC premises. When it comes to the list of accomplished undertak‑ ings and references, Poznań Congress Center has a lot to its credit.

Impressive portfolio

The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP‑14 held in December 2008 was an event of un‑ precedented scale in Poland. During the twelve days of the conference the premises of Poznań Interna‑ tional Fair, including the pavilions and Poznań Con‑

gress Center halls were placed at the disposal of 12 thousand members of delegations representing 190 countries of the world. In an exterritorial conference town under the UN jurisdiction a conference area of 42 thousand m2 was especially arranged. IT infrastruc‑ ture was set up to enable work on 2500 computers. The press center provided services to 800 journalists. Among the conference guests were: UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-Moon, presidents, prime ministers and ministers, also Noble Prize winners, such as Al Gore and Wangari Matthai, and many personalities from the world of politics and science. The PCC premises hosted also many small meetings of the representa‑ tives of governments of countries taking part in the conference. In December 2009, the premises of MTP and Poznań Congress Center hosted the 32nd European Youth Meeting organised by the Taizé Community. The meeting gathered 30 thousand participants. Evening prayers and thematic meetings were held at the fair premises, and meals were served. Also for hosting this event PCC received outstanding reviews, both from the or‑ ganizers and young people from all Eu‑ ropean countries who came to Poznań to take part in this event.

New plans

tute the capital that attracts more important events. As soon as in January 2011 the 32nd World Carrier Pigeon Olympiad is going to be held at Poznań In‑ ternational Fair and the PCC premises. Poznań is go‑ ing to be visited by more than 30 thousand breeders and bird lovers. At the turn of July and August 2011 more than one thousand participants of the elite 5th European Open Bridge Championships are going to come to PCC. This is yet another international cham‑ pionship sports event held at the Center. In the Euro‑ pean Bridge League voting Poznań was chosen over the previously preferred cities of southern Europe such as Bulgarian health resort Albena and Greek Porto Carras. In the second half of 2011 Poznań is going to host many meetings organised in relation to Poland’s presidency in the European Union. 2012, on the other hand, is going to be the year of EURO 2012. Some of the football matches of the European championships are going to take place at the Poznań stadium and a football fan zone is going to be organised at the premises of MTP and PCC. As can be seen, there are many new challenges and each of them puts different requirements on the or‑ ganisers. In order to meet the requirements Poznań Congress Center is planning an extensive rebuilding and modernization of its facilities. As part of the great development project a cutting edge plenary hall is going to be constructed in mid 2014. It is going to have 2.5 thousand seats and some smaller rooms made with mobile walls along with back-up facilities in the already existing pavilions. The works are divided into stages so that they do not interfere with the daily functioning of the Center – all the scheduled events are going to take place without interference. In summer next year, the least function‑ al of the four pavilions which held the UN conference is going to be replaced with a

modern congress hall built on its foundations. More‑ over, a three-level above-ground parking with 1000 parking places is going to be constructed. The archi‑ tectural conception of the rebuilding is to be pre‑ pared by ADS Studio, which has in its portfolio such projects as the Poznań Stary Browar [Old Brewery] and the passenger terminal at the Ławica Airport.

Service without limits

Poznań Congress Center meets the standards that will definitely satisfy even the highest expectations. The vicinity of Poznań International Fair offers the scale and possibilities that are unique in Poland. Today the basic offer of the Center involves 60 per‑ fectly equipped conference halls of various size and character – from smaller rooms for a few people to a congress hall for 1200 guests. The rooms and halls can be individually arranged and furnished with modern technical equipment. The experienced PCC team can be entrusted with organising any event: they can run the congress office and the press center, provide transport and accommodation for the participants of events, organise catering services and execute indi‑ vidual accompanying or incentive programmes. The fair halls can be adjusted to the needs of large congresses (the largest hall can host more than 7 thou‑ sand participants), they make it possible to combine conferences and exhibitions, and provide perfect conditions to carry out meetings and great sports and cultural events – both indoor and outdoor. by Dorota Krawczak

First of all – contacts The aim of the organisers of the fairs, apart from strengthening the image of the brands present at the fair events, is first of all the construction of the network of business contacts among the participants. Thanks to the consistent B2B character of the events, the exhibitors may be certain that the fair will attract visi‑ tors whose presence is really desired – traders, representa‑ tives of specialist shops and lingerie boutiques, and pur‑ chase managers represent‑ ing commercial chains. Dur‑ ing the spring edition of the fairs, five and a half thousand traders and representatives of the fashion world appeared at the event. They came from Poland, Germany, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Great Brit‑ ain and they were by 12 per cent more numerous than at the last edition. EDYTA BONIN Manager of NEXT SEASON, BODY STYLE, FAST FASHION and BTS For the companies present at the fair there are two most important goals: the construction of the image of their brands and making business contacts that may lead to cooperation and commercial contracts. Our ambition as the organisers of the trade fairs is to efficiently support our exhibitors in both of these fields. Therefore we are consistent in building the prestige of these events, keeping their B2B character, taking care of the comfort of contracting conditions, the professionalism of shows and the presence of decision-making people in the fashion industry. That this form of business contact brings positive results was proved, for instance, by the success of the spring edition of the trade fairs, with which we are very happy. Trade fairs are always accompanied by additional events: conferences and seminars devoted to retail trade and heralding the upcoming trends.

The BODY STYLE Exhibition of Lingerie and Beach Fashion is the only Polish linge‑ rie trade fair. At this exhibition, the represen‑ tatives of shops, commercial chains and bou‑ tiques are going to be able to order, in ad‑ vance of six months, the collections of beach clothes, day and night lingerie and hosiery for the season of spring and summer 2011. The spring edition of BODY STYLE provid‑ ed opportunities to contract lingerie of German, Dutch, Italian, Portugal and other brands. Obviously, Polish companies were also present. It was a real trade fair boudoir – the offer of the exhibitors involved a whole range of various kinds of lingerie and beach fashion: from sophisticated exclusive linge‑ rie to seamless sports sets, silk tunics, batiste housecoats and corrective underwear. www.bodystyle.mtp.pl

FAST FASHION Exhibition is a perfect place for manufacturers and importers offering short pro‑ duction series of clothes. Here, traders interested in complementing their offer will be able to contract the collections of clothes and accessories for the current season of autumn and winter 2010/2011. This professional event – the fashion trade fair in the present time – made its debut a year ago, in September. In spring the clothes from the collec‑ tion for the current season were shown by Polish, French, Portugal and Ukrainian companies. FAST FASHION is a chance for traders to offer to their cli‑ ents street trends that have already settled in, be‑ come popular in the market and available at an at‑ tractive price. www.fast-fashion.mtp.pl

The exhibitors at the autumn BTS Fair of Shoes, Leather and Leather Goods are go‑ ing to present the latest collections of foot‑ wear, leather clothes and goods for the season of spring and summer 2011, as well as leather, components, footwear and leather accessories, machinery and technologies for the industry. One of the advantages of BTS is the pro‑ gramme of training events always prepared in cooperation with partners from the industry. Professional seminars and lectures of experts provide traders and manufacturers with the in‑ dustry know-how on the trends in footwear, as well as with practical advice and tips concern‑ ing the running of a business. www.shoes.mtp.pl

How to succeed in business As always, the trade fairs are going to be accompanied by many additional events: conferences and seminars devot‑ ed to retail trade and heralding the upcoming trends. The additional events will answer some of the questions that constantly bother traders: How to sell fashion in a retail shop, how to sell it on the Internet? How to increase the sales? How to persuade clients to try new trends? What determines the success in a given market? The meetings with marketing professionals will definitely provide the participants with a good amount of knowledge. by Marta Siek 2/2010

Traditionally, the Baker and Confectioner’s Day will open the Poznań POLAGRA-TECH International Trade Fair of Food Processing Technologies. This most important event in the food industry is going to abound with market premieres, seminars, shows and competitions. The fair is held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. POLAGRA-TECH The following exhibitions are going to be held as part of the next edition of POLAGRA-TECH: the Exhibition of Baking and Confectionery Industry (12-16 Sep‑ tember 2010), the Exhibition of Food Industry Machines and Equipment, the Exhibition of Dairy Industry Machines and Devices (13-16 September 2010), the International Food Ingredients Show (12‑15 September 2010). What seems especially promising is the part of the fair addressed to the repre‑ sentatives of the baking and confection‑ ery industry. In spite of the economic downturn, which is a problem for all enterprises, there are many signs indi‑ cating that the baking and confection‑ ery industry is already coming out of it unscathed. The stands of many compa‑ nies, including market leaders, are going to be larger and more significant that at

the previous editions. This confirms the prestige of the event organised every two years in Poznań. It also proves that this sort of platform for business meet‑ ings is really necessary. POLAGRA-TECH is first of all the presentation of modern technologies for particular branches of the food industry. The visitors will be able to see the live shows of the work of exhibited machines, tools and the whole technological lines, as well as to taste the products manufactured at the fair.

The whole industry in one place A comprehensive trade fair offer, numerous new products and market premieres as well as a number of industry events – this and much more has been prepared by the organisers of this year’s edition of International Food Product Trade Fair POLAGRA FOOD and International Trade Fair of Catering GASTRO TRENDY – the traditionally greatest food industry meetings. POLAGRA-FOOD The area of POLAGRA FOOD is divided into four thematic exhibitions: the Food and Drink Exhi‑ bition, the Wine and Spirit Exhibition, the Fran‑ chising Exhibition and the Store Equipment Ex‑ hibition. The first two ones are going to feature rich offers of manufacturers, distributors, whole‑ salers and retailers operating in the food indus‑ try. Products new to the market are also going to be presented, including food and beverage, al‑ cohol, parapharmaceutical products and dietetic supplements. At the same time, the Franchising Exhibition is going to create a platform of com‑ munication for franchisors, franchisees and oth‑ er interested in this system of trade. The Store Equipment Exhibition, on the other hand, is go‑ ing to make a perfect presentation space for the latest solutions in the area of commercial space arrangement.

Regional specialities The Tastes of the Regions exhibition, which is to start on September 11, is going to be this year’s special exposition. This interesting initiative pro‑ moting Polish, ecological and certified food is or‑ ganised in cooperation with Offices of Province Marshals and the Union of the Voivodeships of the Republic of Poland (ZWRP). The visitors will be able to try regional specialities that have been produced for years in accordance with original recipes in different, often the most remote cor‑ ners of Poland. Numerous little known, small, lo‑ cal food manufacturers are going to show their unique products. The visitors will find here wines,

tinctures, various kinds of bread, wonderful cakes, sausages, different kinds of cheese, vegetable and fruit preserves, and many more dainties. Last year’s premiere edition of the presentation of regional specialities at the Tastes of the Regions exhibition not only contributed to the development of the regional food industry but also became an original method of promotion for Polish provinces, which had a chance to present their values through the prism of their regional cuisines.

Chances for traditional trade The POLAGRA-FOOD programme is going to be additionally enriched by a series of conferences – Two Days for Distribution (14 and 15 September). Just as it was in the previous years, the basic inten‑ tion of the organisers is to transfer practical and re‑ liable knowledge on new market trends and to cre‑ ate a platform for dialogue and the exchange of ex‑ periences. This year’s edition of Two Days for Distri‑ bution will put particular emphasis on the issues related to the traditional trade. The scheduled con‑ ferences are going to concern such topics as, for example, modern commercial space arrangement and the choice and implementation of the opti‑ mum franchising model. As part of the cooperation between Poznań In‑ ternational Fair and the “Wiadomości Handlowe” monthly, a conference is going to be held on “Prin‑ ciples of shop keeping and interior decoration of shops” (14 September). At the conference shop equipment providers, among others, are going to

speak about the latest trends and market require‑ ments concerning the equipment and decoration of shops. This kind of training is to be organised for the fourth time and also this year the conference is going to be run by recognised trainers from re‑ nown training companies and Makro Cash&Carry professionals. On September 15, on the other hand, Poznań Inter‑ national Fair and the editors of the “Poradnik Hand‑ lowca” monthly invite all the interested to take part in a conference on “Modern franchising as a way to succeed, not just survive”, organised for franchisors, franchisees, and other people interested in this system of trade. The invited lecturers, representa‑ tives of such companies as EUROCASH FRANCZY‑ ZA GRUPA EUROCASH and AC NIELSEN, are going to tell the participants in which direction the fran‑ chise market in Poland is heading and which mod‑ els give chances of stable development.

Experts talk about the food industry As part of Polagra-Food, Polish Association of Food Industry Engineers and Technicians (SITSPOZ) is going to organise a number of panels dedicated to the food sector. September 13 is going to be the day dedicated to the baking and confectionery industry. The organisers invite all the interested to the discussion panel on “The problems of the baking industry – Poland, the EU and the world”, the participants of which are going to be bakers and millers from all over Poland and the representatives of UIB. In total, the number of expected participants amounts to 200, including 40 foreign guests. The panel is going to be devoted to such topics as, for instance, craft bakery and its advantages. The series of discussion panels includes also those devoted to the fermentation, vegetable and fruit industries – “Globalisation – a chance for development or a danger for the fruit and vegetable sector”, or “Food labelling – the information needed by manufacturers.”

POLAGRA-FOOD International Food Product Trade Fair

GASTRO TRENDY International Trade Fair of Catering

HANNA SKRZYPCZAK Manager of POLAGRA-FOOD and GASTRO TRENDY The next edition of POLAGRA-FOOD and GASTRO TRENDY is ahead of us. Each year they become a food industry meeting that attracts to Poznań professionals related to the industry, both from Poland and abroad. We, the organisers, do not ever stop trying to create the best atmosphere at the trade fairs and the best conditions for making good business contacts, and for the good promotion of products and companies. At the same time, the trade fairs themselves evolve, adjusting to the constantly changing economic situation in Poland and in the whole world. GASTRO TRENDY

Complex offer for the HoReCa sector At first, GASTRO TRENDY only accompanied POLAGRA-FOOD as a catering exhibition. With time, however, as it has attracted a great interest of the industry, it has been transformed into an individual trade fair event. The offer of the GASTRO TRENDY exhibitors is addressed to the owners and managers of restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, cake shops, as well as to chefs, waiters, baristas and managers of various catering points and restaurant designers. The exposition is going to include machines and equipment for catering businesses (such as food processing equipment, coffee and ice cream machines), equipment for catering premises, food products for catering businesses, computer hardware and software, as well as consulting services in the areas of technology, banking and construction. Gastro Trendy is not only

a perfect opportunity to become familiar with the products, services and solutions for the catering industry, but also a chance to take part in many professional events.

Tenth anniversary of the Polish Culinary Cup It is going to be the tenth time when the prestigious Polish Culinary Cup is going to be held at GASTRO TRENDY. The contestants, chosen from among the winners of ten other culinary competitions are going to compete for the title of the best Polish chef. The organisation of the event is supported by the main sponsor of the event, the Unilever company, and the strategic partner – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – which included the Polish Culinary Cup in its agenda as part of the “Know Good Food” initiative.

Know-how for restaurant owners Moreover, as part of GASTRO TRENDY, the Backstage Experts event is going to be held. It is addressed to restaurant owners, investors and other people professionally related to the catering industry. On the area of 200-300 m2 a model kitchen and restaurant are going to be arranged to operate normally for the whole 4 days. On these days, visitors will be able to watch live the work of chefs preparing food, waiters collecting orders for free dishes and a receptionist managing the restaurant room. The participants of the event will also have at their disposal a number of experts in various domains, who will give professional advice concerning efficient organisation and proper running of a catering venue. The programme of the event is also going to include the Coffee Olympics – a competition of baristas from the best coffee chains. The participants are going to compete in the following categories: “Latte art”, “Coffee in good spirits”, “Cup tasting” and “Espresso on time”. Moreover, industry conferences, seminars and shows are also going to be held. by Anna Adamska 2/2010

It gives the entrepreneurs operating in the industry a unique opportunity to present current trends, technologies and new products in the most important sectors related to the wood market and forest economy. For the visitors, on the other hand, the fair is an opportunity to make direct contacts with manufacturers and distributors of forest machines and to take part in numerous trade fair events. EKO-LAS

LEADERS SPEAK OUT

W

hat influences the development of the economy, i.e. the development of enterprises, is innovativeness – the access to new solutions, technologies and materials. Trade fairs are the best sources of information on such innovations. The presentation of novelties at fairs makes them possible to reach a great number of professionals. Trade fairs are also great places to promote novelties as the organisers of fairs pay attention to mark them out. Moreover, information on novelties is especially emphasized in press reports and articles published both in the general and industry media.

Transfer from Space to the Earth MartA Krywanis

Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Department of Planetary Geodesy At the ITM POLAND fair visitors could see the examples of technologies that had been developed for space research, and then applied in the conventional industry. These products could be seen on the common stand of PAN Space Research Centre, European Space Agency (ESA) and POLSPACE/Astri Poland. The exhibition was accompanied by the conference ”Space Technology Transfer”. Such an interesting event drew the attention of many visitors to the trade fair. The idea behind the conference was to encourage Polish entrepreneurs to utilise space technologies. Could we say that this goal was reached? Participation in a trade fair is an excellent way to promote your business and establish cooperation networks. The Space Technology Transfer project is an initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA), in which we have been involved since January this year. For years the universe has been a fascinating issue. Today, it holds fewer and fewer mysteries and has become a new source of acquiring knowledge. Throughout the world, technologies developed to support the exploration and utilisation of outer space and components of satellite and rocket systems are transferred to other sectors of the economy and industry. We wanted to present this ”transfer from space to the Earth” at the ITM POLAND fair in Poznań. The conference, hosted by Mr. Cornelis Eldering, an ESA Representative, attracted a group of listeners who had indicated their willingness to participate in the Space Technology Transfer project. As experience shows, European space technologies, boasting unique parameters, such as resistance to temperature differences,

lightness and durability, as well as an unconventional design approach, contribute a lot to the modernization of production and businesses. We want to demonstrate to Polish companies the possibilities of cooperation, financing and, above all, development of innovativeness. Some of the products presented at the exhibition included an extremely light aerogel jacket, allowing unrestrained movement, resistant to temperatures between 3000 and -150 degrees Celsius; a jacket with a hydrogel layer, resistant to extremely high temperatures, and the Brembo brake disc, made of a ceramic material reinforced with glass fibre, are now in common use and companies that have entered the ”space” market have turned into innovative businesses with a wide range of customers. An excellent example of Space Technology Transfer in Poland is the bag with a solar panel which is an energy source able to charge e.g. a mobile phone or laptop. With our promotional activities at the trade fair we have established a network of contacts that we intend to expand. Numerous visitors inquired about the possibility of cooperation and were indeed able to find opportunities for working jointly with us and the ESA. Space is no longer the ultimate mystery and each modern technology can be made even more ”cutting edge” by enriching it with the magical ”space” element. We are looking for customers in various industries: materials science, energy, navigation, medicine, etc. We believe that Polish companies will open to the innovation originating in space and the project will be a major success in our country. Right now we are in the middle of talks which hopefully will generate new solutions that we will be able to present at ITM POLAND 2011.

”We can utilise solutions designed for space for the good of the inhabitants of the Earth” – these were the words of Cornelis J.J. Eldering, representative of the European Space Agency, who had a lecture on the transfer of space technologies to improve the quality of life at the ITM POLAND fair.

Is the popularization of technical and technological innovations difficult? How to push them most effectively? Promotion of technical innovations is difficult. It is quite a challenge to convince people that, for instance, specific aerodynamic properties facilitate the packaging of crisps (currently it is used by one of the European companies with the result that the packaging process has been shortened by 30%). However, I think that each obstacle can be overcome and participation in, e.g., trade fairs offers a different perspective on technical innovations. First of all, one has to find the right audience, and then start to organize meetings. The key to success is a good website, articles in magazines. New, interesting things are always a magnet, so we hope that the phrase ”Space Technology Transfer” will very soon gain proper significance in Poland.

Novelties attract attention Jarosław Marczuk President of the Hert company

Novelties and market premieres are the strongest magnet attracting professional audience to trade fairs. How do you try to mark out new products in your fair offer? Does the presentation of novelties at fairs deliver measurable benefits? In spite of the fast development of computer technologies and electronic media, we still value direct contact with our clients the most. Therefore, we take part in trade fairs. We prepare to trade fairs long before them. Information on new products and fair offers are published on our company’s website and in industry journals before fairs. Bakers and confectioners are informed about them directly by our managers and regional representatives.

Novelties as the advantage of fairs Trade fairs offer opportunities to spread information on products among all the gathered clients. It is made fast, cost-efficiently, through personal meetings. Novelties are a magnet attracting potential clients to trade fairs. This is confirmed by the results of the latest, international research on exhibitors and fair attendants conducted by CENTREX International Exhibition Statistics Union. According to the results:

I think that presenting novelties at fairs does deliver measureable benefits. That is why we choose the most visible parts of our stands to present new machines. We also prepare information in the form of brochures, descriptions and films. At fairs we show our machines in motion, presenting how they work. This is the most attractive form of showcasing novelties and the best one to arouse interest, so we often use it – we run a machine at our exposition stand and conduct a demonstration production process, because the capabilities and the quality of a machine can be best evaluated through seeing products it can produce. It often happens that such presentation at a fair stand is a starting point for a talk, during which it turns out that a given baker or confectioner is looking for novelties but ultimately is not willing to invest in a totally new machine. He chooses a new, improved model which was tried and tested in practice. Such models arouse great interest as clients know them well and have already tested them in various conditions, whereas we are able to advice which options are good for a given client. We then can be sure that the client will be satisfied and will derive concrete benefits from the machine he has chosen. Such investment is not risky for the client, he can trust the references and experience of ours and our other clients who have been working on such machines for many years. A baker or a confectioner who invests in the latest, improved models provides himself with a modern machinery park utilising the highest achievements of technology. At the same time, he can trust the quality, the workmanship, the service, the spare parts and the possibilities of adding new devices that will easily work together. Full training for the staff also becomes unnecessary. Is the presentation of novelties the most important? The presentation of novelties is undoubtedly very important but we pay no less attention to our basic offer, which some fair visitors know from previous events. We still show it at every new fair event in various configurations and versions, drawing attention to the fact that out machines can be put together in various ways, like building blocks which you can use to make many different constructions. At the same time, we listen to what our fair guests say very carefully, as in such talks they share with us their experiences and current needs of the industry. This enables us to give the right direction to improving particular devices and the whole technological ideas. You are welcome to visit our stand and see for yourself that what I am saying is true.

Fairs as opportunities to promote new products Agnieszka Nocuń

Head of Marketing Department Satel Sp. z o.o.

Our company has been taking part in Poznań fairs for many years. The SECUREX exhibition is a good opportunity to present offers and promote new products. It is also worth mentioning that all the comments and suggestions given by professionals from the industry enable us to improve our products in the future and encourage us to look for new solutions to meet the market expectations. At the last edition of the exhibition we presented a new product group – the Fire Alarm System, which previously had not been within the area of our company’s activities but had always been its thematic complement. The fact was noticed and appreciated by our clients who saw the devices at the exhibition. We also showed two new manipulators: a sensory and a touch one, which were very highly evaluated by the visitors to our stand, both when it comes to their functionality and attractive design. What aroused equal interest was new monitoring products: the standalone monitoring station system with built-in micro-server (STAM-IRS) and the modular receiver system for monitoring stations (STAMBOX). Attention of many guests visiting our stand was also attracted by new devices for the ACCO access control system, the GPRS / SMS / CLIP monitoring module with control panel functions (GPRS-T3) and other products for expansion of the ABAX group of wireless devices. What is also worth mentioning is that all the proposals, comments and suggestions given by the professionals from the industry who visited the stand gave the SATEL company a chance to improve its products in the future and to look for new solutions to meet the market expectations.

• 68% of fair participants come to fairs to see novelties, • 57% attend fairs in order to obtain up-to-date information on the market offer before making purchase decisions, • 30% visit fairs looking for new ideas, • 73% think that visits at fairs are useful for making purchase decisions. Clients choose fairs mostly because they want to find out what is new in the market. At fairs they gather the information in a neutral place where they can talk about what products they need and where they can evaluate the whole market offer and offers of particular suppliers. Based on the data received from CENTREX.

New products attract attention Danuta Pawlik Schattdecor Marketing Manager

The Schattdecor company has for many years set trends and launched bestsellers of design to give our clients the best products in the market. Our experience has shown that it is trade fairs where new trends and products can be best exposed. Trade fair creates perfect opportunities to present the best solutions, indicating the directions of development to the other participants in the market. At FURNICA 2010 we showcased many design novelties in the area of decorative papers and exclusive foil products. The visitors to our stand (which enjoyed a significant interest, with more than 150 people on the four trade fair days) paid a lot of attention to new furniture and floor decors and new technological solutions in the area of foil. Trade fairs are a source of information for the market on what the industry has on offer, which explains the high turnout of professional visitors, mostly looking for novelties. At trade fairs they can discuss with professionals many issues related to new products. For us – manufacturers – trade fairs are opportunities to see the first reactions of the market to the products we offer. At the same time, a broad media coverage, which continues even after the trade fair has ended, fosters the promotion of a company and its offer, and what journalists usually highlight in their reports is the information on novelties. by Donata Naumienko 2/2010

Shows on the Main Stage The Main Stage was a place of unconventional, colourful shows. The latest make-up trends were presented by, for example, Nico Baggio, a fa‑ mous make-up artist permanently working for Dolce&Gabbana and Armani. The secrets of the art of painting with Indian henna were revealed by Anya Chantler. Those interested in current trends in cutting, colouring and styling of hair could see the original and inspiring show of Waldemar Wagner Artistic Group (for Goldwell), Artego hairdressers and KEMON. Another attraction was a spectacular make-up show of waterproof make-up techniques – “Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Poland!” – by Ireneusz Folaron from Anita Folaron School of Make-up, Image Consulting and Styling. The events taking place on the Main Stage were complemented with numerous shows at the stands of the exhibitors.

An author of winning men’s hairstyle was Radosław Majewski

CREATORs 2010 It was for the eighth time that the CREATOR com‑ petition was held at the LOOK Hairdressing Forum. This year’s edition of this prestigious struggle of young hairdressers focused on original modern styling. Actually, this year CREATOR consisted of two competitions – men’s and women’s – evalu‑ ated separately by a professional jury. The most important criterion was creativity and innovative‑ ness of the hairstyle – in terms of colouring, pro‑ fessional cutting and consistency in keeping the dominant styling complemented with make-up and well-selected clothes. This year’s winners of CREATOR were: Piotr Drewniak (in the women’s styling category) and Radosław Majewski (men’s styling). CREATOR is one of the most important events addressed to young people who have a unique style of cutting and colour selection for hair‑ styles, and who can ingeniously present the final result. The competition was organised by Dana Puciłowska PROMOTIONAL AGENCY and Poznań International Fair.

New-born champions LOOK and beautyVISION once again became the arena of competition for prestigious master awards. A ticket to the hairdressing elite was definitely the participation in the Polish Open Hairdressing Championship which this year was held for the eigh‑ teenth time. The championship was divided into two categories – men’s and women’s. In the first one the participants presented their visions of creative and evening hairstyles, in the other one – the model‑ ling of long hair, classical hairstyles and fashionable haircuts. The contestants were divided into two age categories – juniors and seniors. The winners were: Małgorzata Kantowska from Gdańsk (category: juniors – women’s hairdressing), Marcin Bronikowski from Olsztyn (category: juniors – men’s hairdressing), Dawid Biegała from Bydgoszcz (category: seniors – women’s hairdressing) and Markus Włodarski from Wrocław (category: seniors – men’s hairdressing). Longer and thicker in the twinkling of an eye Emotions were also raised during the Polish Open Hair Extensions and Thickening Championship. The competition jury evaluated the result of the exten‑ sion, the thickening skills, various colour contrasts of hair, the cutting and the creativity in presenting the final result. Also, the final image of the model was important, including the clothes and the make-up, and whether they matched the hairstyle. The winner was Żaneta Pawlak from Warsaw.

beautyVision

Magic of the cinema The programme of beautyVISION Forum included an offer for all those interested in professional nail styling. During the International Polish Nail Art Championship – NAIL EXPERT 2010 the contestants showed skills and creativity, competing for the title of the Polish Champion. The Championship, co-organised by the “Nail Expert” journal and MTP, was this time held under the motto of “the Magic of Hollywood.” The participants of the competition within 3 hours performed nail styling inspired by the leitmotif. The contestants drew inspiration from the cinema classics as well as from the latest Hollywood productions, including even “Avatar”. The contes‑ tant who stood on the highest podium was Klaudia Wieczorek.

The latest make-up trends The programme of the beautyVISION Forum was enriched with another, fourth edition of the Polish Open Professional Make-up Championship, which consisted of two competitions: the professional “Businesswoman” make-up and the creative “Haute Couture” make-up. In the first competition the evalu‑ ating criterion was the creation of day make-up em‑ phasizing the image of a businesswoman running a company. The “Haute Couture” competition, on the other hand, gave more room for creative styling. The incredibly tight contest was finally won by Katarzyna Kałek-Dekret from Poznań. An event awaited by both professional stylists and all those who are up to date with the trends in the hairdressing industry was the arrival of Tim Hartley – a mentor and an icon of contemporary hairdressing

Crowds at the Master’s show An event awaited by both professional stylists and all those who are up to date with the trends in the hairdressing industry was the arrival of Tim Hartley – a mentor and an icon of contemporary hair‑ dressing. Almost one thousand people took part in the unusual and inspiring show of the star of the Italian brand of Davines. Many of them described the show as an unprecedented event. Not only did Hartley present fantastic skills and incredible imag‑ inativeness but also established a wonderful rap‑ port with the people in the audience, with whom he held a lively and witty dialogue. “I draw inspira‑ tion for hairstyles from the things around me. I can fall in love with such objects as a chair or a pair of shoes,” he revealed at a press conference. He also commented on the latest tendencies: “What is definitely trendy in the spring and summer 2010 are all the references to the 50s and the 60s, that is – short hair and soft lines.”

Talking about the industry The beautyVISION fair offered a number of work‑ shops and seminars, making it possible to gain knowledge, discuss the tendencies in the industry and exchange opinions. An opportunity to receive the most up-to-date information was definitely the Cosmetics and Cosmetology conference. Among those invited to take part in the conference were teachers, recognised practitioners and experts

from the industry, and among the discussed issues were: chocolate components utilised in cosmetics, modern methods of introducing cosmeceutics and medicines, needle mesotherapy, cellulite, the im‑ pact of contraception on skin condition, marketing in beauty salons. The conference was organised by the ArtiDea Publishing House and MTP.

The 5th Nail Expert beautyVision Congress For the fourth time the Nail Expert journal and the organisers of LOOK and beautyVISION held the International Nail Expert beautyVision 2010 Congress. The special guest of the event was KyungHee Choi, a Korean mistress of nail design, one of the most recognised representatives of the “Korean school”, a trainer conducting nail design workshops all over the world. This year she presented her phenomenal styling proposals for the first time in Poland – especially for the Congress guests! The programme of the Congress included threehour presentations held by Kyung-Hee Choi, each devoted to a different technique: styling and nail art with the use of the gel and acrylic techniques, as well as with acrylic paints. TRADE FAIR REPORTS Wood and Furniture Industries Trade Fairs

The most important meeting of industry This year in April the DREMA International Trade Fair of Machines and Tools for Wood and Furniture Industries was held in Poznań. The trade fair is the most important event for many various sectors of the wood and furniture industries in East-Central Europe. The event took place simultaneously with the FURNICA International Trade Fair of Components for Furniture Production.

B

oth trade fair events attracted more than 800 exhibitors from 28 countries, who in the exhibition area of more than 30,000 m2 showcased the most modern solutions from the world of technology and components. This year, the fair was visited by 24,360 professionals from various sectors of the wood and furniture industries, which meant a 16-percent increase when compared to the previous year. ”The dynamic growth in the number of visitors, many of whom was completely new people interested in investments, is a sign of a positive tendency in the market and the stabilising of the economic situation”, says Hanna Ochnik-Pawłowska, the manager of DREMA and FURNICA. An undisputable advantage for the fair guests was the free admission (on registration) and the free electronic catalogue of exhibitors, as well as the free catering in the Rest&Meet points. The modern character of the fair was appreciated also by the fair exhibitors.

Inspired by the trade fair shows The visit in Poznań was also an opportunity to get inspired by interesting shows. For furniture manufacturers who represent the upholstered furniture sector the Live Furniture Factory was particularly interesting. The Factory is a special presentation space that for several editions of the trade fair has combined the thematic interests of the visitors of DREMA and the visitors of the simultaneously held FURNICA International Trade Fair of Components for Furniture Production. A full-size machine park produced upholstered furniture – interesting in terms of design and manufactured with the use of the most modern technology and materials. This interesting, yet logistically chal‑ lenging undertaking was supervised by the Department of Furniture Design of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. The factory not only provided information on technological nuanc‑ es. The project also integrated the students’ community – the future professionals of the furniture industry.

Conferences, presentations and shows The 4th edition of the POLWOOD Economic Forum of the Polish Wood and Furniture In‑ dustry, organised jointly by the Inwestor Pub‑ lishing House and Poznań International Fair, is one of key events of DREMA. Attracting rep‑ resentatives of leading woodworking plants and industry circles, the forum covered the sawmill and furniture sectors. Its attendants saw prestigious award ceremonies: in the “in‑ vestment in the wood industry” category the award went to the Hoamni Polska Sp. z o.o. company from Karlino, whereas in the “invest‑ ment in the furniture industry” category the winner was the Mebel Rust company from Dobrodzień.

Security exhibition

Technology for sp The SECUREX International Security Exhibition, the largest specialist event for the security sector in Poland and East Central Europe, was held this year in April for the eighteenth time, simultaneously with the SAWO International Fair of Work Protection, Fire-Fighting and Rescue Equipment – the most important forum presenting the latest work protection equipment and solutions, additionally featuring fire-fighting and rescue products.

SECUREX

A successful edition This year’s, 18th edition of SECUREX attracted to Poznań 260 producers and distributors showcas‑ ing comprehensive offers in the area of crime detection and combating systems, mechanical and electronic security systems, and CCTV and property protection. The exhibition held on the area exceeding 10,000 m2 and located in a mod‑ ern complex of pavilions, included offers show‑ cased by exhibitors from Poland, Austria, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, the Neth‑ erlands, Lithuania, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine and Great Britain. More than 260 new products and services made their market debuts at the fair. The most numerous were the latest solutions in CCTV and electronic security systems, including access control devices and security and alarm equipment. On the four days of the fair, the SECUREX International Security Ex‑ hibition and the SAWO International Fair of Work Protection, Fire-Fighting and Rescue Equipment, as well as the simultaneously held INSTALACJE, WODOCIĄGI and KOMINKI fairs, were visited by nearly 30,000 professionals.

The latest knowledge on security SECUREX was accompanied by a rich programme of events – conferences, seminars, lectures and shows. The fair was held under the auspices of the Minister of Economy, the Minister of Inte‑ rior and Administration, the President of the Pol‑ ish Bank Association (ZBP) and the Chief of the Wielkopolska Province Police Headquarters in Poznań.

Visitors to the fair could see the final of a very meaningful competition for the industry, i.e. the Polish Master of Alarm Technology organised by the POLALARM Polish Association of Security Systems and Security Management Engineers and Technicians. The competition winners were 13 companies whose products were found the most innovative for property protection. The main prize of the “Golden Armour” in the com‑ petition went to the Poznań-based LINC Sp. z o.o. company, which had presented MOBOTIX Q24MSec, an autonomous video/audio surveillance and registration system. Great emotions were aroused by the final of the Polish Alarm Systems Installers’ Championship organised by the Polish Chamber of Alarm Sys‑ tems (PISA). The participants in the competition were 6 teams that had qualified for the final after an incredibly difficult qualification round that re‑ quired extensive expertise and precise skills in the area of installation, maintenance and service of alarm system devices. The prestigious title of the 2010 Polish Champion of Alarm System Install‑ ers finally went to: Michał Bogusz and Zbigniew Fiłkowski from the Szczecin-based Solid Security Agency. MR SYSTEM team from Warsaw, repre‑ sented by Mariusz Joachimczuk and Mariusz Ra‑ kowski, placed the second and became the 2010 1st Polish Vice-Champion of Alarm System Install‑ ers, whereas the UNIWERSUM team from Warsaw (Jakub Dziedzic and Andrzej Sypuła) placed third and became the 2010 2nd Polish Vice-Champion of Alarm System Installers. as well as sports, tourist, industrial and military facilities) turned out to be incredibly attractive in the light of the EURO 2012 Championships that are to be organised in Poland. At the same time, the “Requirements and guidelines for applying new Polish norms in designing and constructing alarm systems” conference organised by the Pol‑ ish Chamber of Alarm Systems attracted a large group of investors, administrators and designers responsible for security organisation for highprofile buildings and management of physical security systems.

Police at SECUREX For the four trade fair days Poznań was the safest place in the entire country. SECUREX attracted uniformed services from all over Poland. Apart from cutting-edge police devices and equip‑ ment, the attention of the professional audience was drawn by a series of conferences promoting the latest knowledge on security organised by the Wielkopolska Police and the Wielkopolska Province Governor’s Office. The “Together safer – security in public space and at home” confer‑ ence, addressed to uniformed services and local governments’ employees involved in ensuring public order and safety, presented innovative solutions enhancing the effectiveness of the police and city guards’ operations. The “Trade safety” and “Security of financial institutions” conferences, on the other hand, attracted many representatives and employees of offices, insti‑ tutions, banks as well as chain stores and shops interested in robbery prevention, proper protec‑ tion of the facility as well as protection of services and goods. What was especially spectacular at the fair were shows of rescue operations following a road ac‑ cident, including presentations of airbag explo‑ sions. These shows concluded the conference on road safety in the Wielkopolska region that pre‑ sented solutions aimed at reducing the number of road accidents and road fatalities. SAWO

Jubilee edition of SAWO – facts and figures The SAWO International Fair of Work Protection, FireFighting and Rescue Equipment is the most impor‑ tant forum for the presentation of state-of-the-art equipment and solutions related to health and safety in Poland. This year, the twentieth edition of SAWO attracted exhibitors from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Spain, the Netherlands, South Korea, Lithuania, Malaysia, Ger‑ many, Poland, Russia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, Great Britain and Italy, who showcased their offers on

the area of 9,500 m2. More than 206 companies, includ‑ ing 53 foreign businesses, presented personal protec‑ tive equipment, collective protective equipment, de‑ tectors and alarms, marking, first aid kits, fire fighter’s personal protective equipment and rescue equip‑ ment. The advantage of the fair was the presence of Polish and European industry leaders. For the first time Russian exhibitors associated in ASIZ – the Russian As‑ sociation of Designers, Manufacturers and Suppliers of Personal Protective Equipment – came to the Poznań trade fair. Visitors had a chance to become familiar with their offer and to take part in the Polish-Russian forum dedicated to personal protective equipment. Institutions crucial for the subject of SAWO, such as the National Labour Inspectorate (PIP), the State Fire Ser‑ vice, the Technical Supervision Office (UDT), as well as the Central Institute for Labour Protection – National Research Institute (CIOP-PIB) were also present at the trade fair. Moreover, the trade fair was the place where the management and logistics division of the State Fire Service held their meeting. SAWO took place under the honorary auspices of the Minister of Economy, the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, the Chief Labour Inspector and the Chief Mar‑ shall of State Fire Service.

Crowds at conferences The rich programme of additional events accompany‑ ing SAWO enjoyed enormous interest of profession‑ als from the work protection, fire-fighting and rescue industries. The conference halls were filled to the last corner. The National Labour Inspectorate invited the fair visitors to take part in the discussion on stress at work and ways of eliminating it and counteracting its negative effects which was held at the international conference entitled: “Occupational risk assessment – psychosocial factors. Best practices in EU member states”. Another conference, entitled “Safety of ma‑ chinery and equipment operation” was held as part of the European information campaign for 2010-2011 – “Healthy and friendly workplace. Good for you. Good for business”, implemented in Poland by the Central In‑ stitute for Labour Protection – National Research Insti‑ tute. Accidents at work were the subject of the follow‑ ing conferences: “Accidents at work and social aware‑ ness” and “Good H&S practices and accidents at work”, as well as “Safety based on good and bad practices”.

The fire fighters from the City Headquarters and the Province Headquarters of State Fire Service in Poznań performed special rescue shows with chemical and ecological emergency, high altitude rescue, road emergency and water rescue teams. They presented a simulation of a rescue operation after an earthquake. There were also rescuers with dogs trained to look for missing people. In the special Rescue Education Area simulations of accidents and displays of rescue opera‑ tions were held. Each of the visitors could practice giv‑ ing first aid, as well as meet rescuers from Specialist Rescue Teams of the State Fire Service and talk to them about their work. The specially prepared photo exhibition presented the operations of fire fighters in the area affected by this year’s earthquake. Also, high-altitude rescue op‑ erations with the use of rope access techniques were

demonstrated in the SAWO pavilion. The yard of the Poznań International Fair was dominated by the red colour of four-wheel exhibits, as fire engines and res‑ cue vehicles were displayed there.

Awards for the best Traditionally, prestigious awards were granted at the SAWO fair: Grand Prix and SAWO Gold Medals. The Minister of Labour and Social Policy, the Chief Labour Inspector, the Director of the Central Institute for La‑ bour Protection – National Research Institute and the Chief Marshall of State Fire Service gave Grand Prix and Gold Medals in the following categories: personal protection, rescue equipment and fire services equip‑ ment, fire protection, education and prevention, other technological products and solutions related to the subject matter of SAWO. They also gave practi‑ cal advice and tips on how to hold sales talks with difficult clients and how to efficiently sell footwear in a modern shoe salon. The seminars were held in a special “speaker’s corner” area. Another occasion to exchange ideas, opinions and experiences on the present and future condi‑ tion of the industry, as well as on the directions at which the trade fair should develop was the industry meeting organised on the first day of the trade fair by the Polish Chamber of the Leather Industry (PIBS).
