What’s worth knowing
[2-17]
Many plans for the new Interview with dr Andrzej Byrt President of the Board of the Poznań International Fair
we have all learnt from the previous great economic crash six years ago, in 2003, when many trade fairs organizers simply disappeared from the market. What was the attitude of the exhibitors of Poznań International Fair to the economic downturn?
Since 2009 was such a difficult year for the economies of many countries, I must ask you: what was the year like for Poznań International Fair?
We wish you a Happy New Year 2010 with all the prosperity, fruition of projects and professional successes Editors
2009 was a year of an economic downturn in Poland, but still, the situation in Poland was a positive contrast to what was happening in all the other European countries, where the economic development not only slowed down but broke down, which was shown by negative gross domestic product indicators. As we know, Poland, though with difficulty, recorded a growth of the GDP by 1.7 per cent in the third quarter. Trade fairs always reflect the economy, so all the fair organizers in Poland were badly affected by the crisis year. Poznań International Fair went through this period in a relatively good condition. We have been generating a profit this year, which is a very good piece of news for the shareholders and owners of MTP, although as far as our operational activity is concerned, i.e. the organization of events and trade fairs, we have experienced a 6-7 per cent drop in the number of exhibitors and the amount of space rented for events. Nevertheless, as a result of certain anticipating measures taken earlier to improve the management and reduce the costs, we will report the profit I mentioned earlier. Other trade fairs in Poland experienced much greater difficulties throughout that period, but I think they will all be fine. This is because in Poland
The exhibitors at the trade fairs held in the first six months of 2009, like the participants of the BUDMA fair, for example, who had decided to participate in the event back in the time of prosperity, obviously turned up at the fair. The closer we were to the end of the year, the stronger enterprises reacted to the visible downturn. What is interesting, however, is that what dropped was not the number of enterprises but the amount of space they rented. We also experienced a nice surprise when it appeared that all the new events advertised in 2009, such as BAKEPOL, which was held for the second time, were even more popular with regards to the number of participants than previously. In general, the closer we were to the end of 2009 the more optimistic the market reaction was. For instance, at the latest POLEKO fair – the greatest ecological fair in this part of Europe – the number of professional visitors was by as much as 80 per cent larger than last year. The number of nearly twice as many visitors as last year confirms the role of the fair as an essential intermediary between two forces – demand and supply, but – most importantly – it translates into the satisfaction of our exhibitors. As a result, only until today, many leading companies in the market have already declared the willingness to take part in the fair next year, which lets us hope that the fair in 2010 will be even bigger. What is the direction in which Poznań international Fair is going to develop in 2010? What new events are you planning to include in your offer? Apart from trade fairs that have been organized for many years and enjoy a high reputation in oth-

er countries and among foreign exhibitors, our calendar of events for 2010 includes new events, which often respond to the needs of the market. In 2010 we are planning to start the preparations to as many as 12 new events. Some of them are going to be held in 2010, but some will have to wait for their premieres until the beginning of 2011. It is hard to present the whole trade fair calendar in a short interview. However, I would like to say a few words about the events that are going to open the new exhibition year. The January BUDMA fair is going to be held in 2010 for the 19th time. With each new edition the fair changes and becomes more attractive. This time it is going to be held under the motto of sustainable construction and is going to be accompanied by other fairs of the industry sector – CBS Sports Facilities, Amenity Areas, Wellness & Spa, the BUMASZ International Fair of Construction and Road Building Machines, Vehicles and Equipment and the GLASS Glass Industry Fair. In February, at the POLAGRA-PREMIERY International Fair of Agricultural Mechanization, we are going to host the representatives of the agricultural industry. The upcoming third edition of the fair will include a couple of new proposals. Apart from the premieres of agricultural machinery and technological innovations of international brands necessary to run an economical and modern farm, the scope of the exhibition has been extended by a professional offer of producers and distributors offering products that are essential for running a business activity in the field of gardening, orchards and protected crops. I can already say that the Polagra PREMIERY fair – the greatest hall exhibition of agricultural machinery in Poland – will be our great success. This is confirmed by a greater than previously number of exhibitors who have already declared that they would participate in the fair, larger space the exhibitors are willing to rent and bigger stands they want to construct. All this proves that the agricultural industry is in a good condition and is counting on a visible improvement of the economic situation, and that the inflow of EU funds into Poland is efficiently invested by the Polish agricultural industry. This year we are also going to change the forms of some of our best hit trade fairs, which are well-known among their participants. For example, the 2010 edition of the MEBLE POLSKA Furniture Fair is going to be held in an innovative form which we have called “New contract zone”. We would like to put more emphasis on attracting traders from abroad and the fair itself
is to serve the purpose of regaining the export power of Polish furniture manufacturers, who have been particularly affected with the economic breakdown in the countries of their western clients this year. Yet another change in our trade fair activity is going to be an increased role of congresses and symposia, which in 2010 are going to be even bigger and more spectacular than those which have been taking place at our premises so far. The number of such events carried out by MTP has been increasing exponentially for four years. As far as the activity of Poznań International Fair in this field is concerned, let me just mention the COP-14 congress organized in December 2008, this year’s International Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, with 22 thousand participants, or the 32th European Youth Meeting, with 30 thousand participants. All this has been appreciated and MTP is now invited to organize events of great importance. For instance, MTP and the government of the city of Poznań takes part in a contest whose winner will organize the second World Youth Olympic Games in 2014. I am glad to say that we have already beaten several dozens of rivals and got to the final round of the contest. Organizing such events for thousands of participants is an enormous organizational and logistical challenge, but we are perfectly prepared to do that and the existing infrastructure of MTP gives us great opportunities to organize varied, cultural, social or even religious events for masses. Last year, at the premises of MTP, the construction of new pavilions and the reconstruction of the existing ones were still in progress. Are there going to be more such works in 2010? 2010 is going to be the year of investments. We are going to start the construction of the greatest exhibition hall in Poland – hall 6B. At the same time, we are going to commence preparatory works for the construction of the new Congress and Symposium Centre and the new Promotion Pavilion, whose construction is going to correspond to the existing building of the Fair Centre and the Eastern Entrance. In the case of the new pavilion, the designing works have already been completed and we are now commencing the works necessary to start the investment. Thank you for the interview. International Construction Fair
International Fair of Construction and Road Building Machines, Vehicles and Equipment
Comprehensive look In January, the construction industry is going to dominate the premises of Poznań International Fair. The BUDMA International Construction Fair, which is the greatest professional fair of technologies and materials for the industry in Poland and New Europe, the BUMASZ International Fair of Construction and Road Building Machines, Vehicles and Equipment, the CBS – Sports Facilities, Amenity Areas, Wellness & Spa, and the GLASS Glass Industry Fair are all going to be held at the same time. BUDMA
Sustained BUDMA Sustained development is one of the most important and the most current trends in all the areas of human activity and economy. Therefore, the motto of the upcoming, nineteenth edition of the BUDMA fair is: ”Sustainable construction – economy, ecology, human”. The BUDMA fair exposition and programme are going to concentrate around building materials that are safe to people and environment-friendly, technologies ensuring high energy efficiency, as well as comfort and functionality of a building, minimizing at the same time the negative effects the construction could have on the natural environment, and on harmonizing building designs with the landscape and the cultural context of the surrounding area. The January construction fair in Poznań involves about 1500 leading manufacturers and distributors gathered in the space of about 40,000 m2. The motto of sustained construction is going to be both the subject of the fair exposition and the leading theme of the accompanying events. Among the solutions presented at the fair there will definitely be many novelties and newly-launched products. The year 2010 means for BUDMA extending its thematic scope. The exposition that used to focus mostly on solutions for the residential housing sector has now been complemented with the rest of the construction industry sectors, including road construction. During the nearest edition of the fair, the exhibitors’ offers are going to be divided into the following sections: residential housing, social infrastructure and public building sector (foundations, walls, insulation products, windows, doors, roofs, wood, stone, chemicals, tools) industrial building (floors, steel constructions, halls) road construction (planning, geotechnics, aggregates, surfaces, road infrastructure).

Ecological expositions One of the innovative projects of the BUDMA 2010 Fair is the Passive Construction project, involving the presentation of innovative building materials and technologies. The exhibition is going to be accompanied with a two-day programme of seminars and workshops called the Passive Construction Forum. Passive houses are the latest generation of energy-saving buildings. They are structures combining a comfortably warm interior with extremely low demand for heat. In order to heat 1 m2 of such a house you need less than 1.5 liter of fuel oil or 1.5 m3 of natural gas a year. Replacing an old building with a passive one means reducing the demand for heating energy by up to 90% and the CO2 emission – by more than 90%. There is no turning back from passive construction. According to the resolution on the Action Plan for Energy Efficiency issued by the European Parliament in 2008, from 1 January 2013 the passive construction technology will be the only one allowed in the European Union. A model house meeting requirements for sustainable construction is going to be built at the fair. The building will be eco-friendly, ergonomic, powered by renewable resources, environment-friendly and at the same time ensuring a comfortable rest and healthy living conditions for the residents. The design will combine traditional elements with state-ofthe-art technology.
At the same time, a growing interest in the wood building technology has become an inspiration for the organizers of the Village of Wooden Houses exposition, which is going to feature examples of state-of-the-art solutions used in wood construction. Model wooden houses built using different technologies are going to await visitors in the main square of the MTP grounds, one of such constructions being a timber framed house developed under the patronage of the Wooden House Association.
Platform of meetings and education The rich programme of the BUDMA fair provides a special opportunity for meetings and for the exchange of experiences among professionals from the construction industry, as well as being a valuable source of knowledge on the latest trends in the construction sector. Seminars and other events have been prepared with a view to particular groups of visitors, so there are going to be: Civil Engineering Day, Urban Planning Day, Polish Roofer’s Congress, or Architecture Day. The programme of accompanying events is very interesting and every attendee will find something for him or herself in it. Speaking of attractions, the renowned expert on public space design Professor Jan Gehl from Denmark has already announced that he will take part in Architecture Day. On the first day of the fair construction professionals are also going to hold a debate on the sustained development policy in the construction industry. At the CBS stands, manufacturers and distributors of the sports and amenity construction industry, as well as producers of building materials, technologies and equipment used in sports, leisure, tourist, wellness and spa facilities are all going to showcase their products and the latest achievements in the areas of materials, technologies and construction solutions. The CBS exposition is going to be complemented by meetings run by experts and practitioners in the field of sports and leisure infrastructure. Participants in the events will definitely acquire knowledge nec-
essary for planning construction investments. At the information and consultation desk, open at the stand of the Polish Club of Sports Infrastructure, both the exhibitors and the fair visitors will be able to obtain free advice on issues related to planning, organizing and participating in tenders, financing, designing, constructing, equipping and managing sports and leisure facilities. BUMASZ
Every two years: machinery, vehicles and equipment The BUMASZ International Fair of Construction and Road Building Machines, Vehicles and Equipment, taking place every two years, constitutes the full presentation of modern technologies of building and road machines, vehicles and construction equipment. The exhibitors’ exposition is going to be accompanied by a number of meetings. What is worth attending is a seminar on work safety in the construction industry which will discuss issues related to various threats and their influence on accidents in building industry as well as work safety management in construction companies. Apart from that, another interesting event seems to be a presentation on the main problems and possible changes concerning the construction and use of scaffolds for small buildings. by Tomasz Wojciechowski, Natalia Filipiak

More than 60 thousand people are expected to attend the Polagra-PREMIERY International Fair of Agricultural Mechanization and the PRO-HORTI Horticultural Contracting Exhibition in February. The organizers promise a great exhibition, as the vast majority of companies operating in the agricultural industry and practically all the leaders have already announced their participation in the fair. This means that the upcoming, third edition of Polagra-PREMIERY Fair will be the greatest exhibition of agriculture machinery in Poland.
The form of both the Polagra-PREMIERY Fair and the PRO-HORTI Exhibition has been prepared especially to facilitate the use of the whole market potential of the fair exhibitors, the exchange of experiences and discussions on new technological solutions and on modern production. We would like to welcome to Poznań also foreign specialists. Therefore, in our promotional activities addressed to potential attendees we focused not only on Poland but also on Central and Eastern Europe.
The dates of the Polagra-PREMIERY Fair have not been selected at random – this is the first fair in a year at which exhibitors are given an opportunity to showcase new products for the agricultural industry.
Polagra-PREMIERY The MTP fairs for the broadly understood agricultural industry are organized according to the calendar strictly adjusted to the needs of the fair exhibitors and visitors. The Polagra-PREMIERY Fair of agricultural machinery and equipment takes place at the beginning of an agricultural year, anticipating the season of agricultural fieldwork. The owners of garden farms and orchards, and growers of vegetables meet at the same time in Poznań at their own industry event – the PRO-HORTI Exhibition. MEBLE POLSKA Furniture Fair
New contract zone New name, new dates, new shape – the nearest edition of the MEBLE POLSKA Furniture Fair will combine innovativeness and the nearly 30-year-old tradition of Poznań furniture fair to create a new event. It will definitely be unique if only because this time – for the first time – the fair will be attended exclusively by professionals.
Having consulted the representatives of the furniture industry, we decided to change the shape of the fair and to introduce new solutions starting from the nearest edition. The fact that the fair is now going to be held at the beginning of the year will bring numerous benefits to both the exhibitors and the clients. Advertising new trends at the start of the year will give the latter much more time to test new products and consequently will make it easier for them to make decisions concerning actual orders in the second half of the year. The products will also be available in shops sooner than before.
The MEBLE POLSKA 2010 Furniture Fair will arrange areas for direct meetings between furniture manufactures and their business partners.

Moreover, it is a perfect opportunity for the whole industry to integrate and discuss the creation of a strong offer in the European market. The uniformed appearance of the stands – according to the slogan saying “we sell furniture and not stand appearance” – will make the exposition clearer and it will additionally mean a real decrease in the costs of the fair participation for manufacturers. The fair attendees will also see individual presentations of some companies, which – understandably – will take place in a larger and separately arranged space. Technology hand in with trends
We put a lot of effort to make the Poznań fashion fairs an event that positively impresses our partners and clients with opportunities it offers and the standards of making efficient business contacts. The proposal of extending the offer of the NEXT SEASON contracting by collections of footwear and leather accessories aroused great interest of importers and merchants contracting collections in advance of six months. For companies whose offer is addressed to clothing retail shops, boutiques, shopping centres and retail chains, taking part in the Poznań fashion fairs is a way of reaching their key clients. In March 2010, due to the great number of events held at one place and time for various different segments of textile and clothing market, the Poznań fashion fairs are going to be the most comprehensive business event for the textile and clothing industry.

The event gathers dynamic, creative companies, contributing significantly to technological innovations and meeting the highest quality standards. The participants of the fair are enterprises operating in the areas of production, import and trade of textile, clothing and footwear machinery. With a view to enhancing efficiency of participating in the fair, the organizers offer the fair exhibitors a new form of showcasing products – in accordance with the slogan: “Exhibitors sell products not stand appearance”. Moreover, the participants of INTERMASZ will be able to take advantage of the innovative Hosted Buyers matchmaking programme, which will let them shorten the time they need to reach a narrowly specialised group of potential recipients.

Education Fair School Equipment Exhibition
World of books and Zofia Strzyż manager of the Education Fair In the light of demographic decline, a direct contact with thousands of young people and their parents gathered together at one place and time is a great opportunity for schools looking for pupils and universities recruiting students. Confronting one’s own offer with offers of other, also foreign, educational centres makes it possible to see and properly expose one’s own advantages. The Education Fair helps schools build good brands. We are happy that every year so many educational centres use this opportunity.
Every year at the Poznań books fair young readers have an opportunity to meet the authors of their favourite books.
knowledge
The Poznań Education Fair has been organized for nearly fifteen years. It is one of the most important events of this kind in Poland. The February edition of the fair is going to feature a new attraction – the Career Exhibition. As every year, also this time visitors will be able to see the exhibitors’ offers at the School Equipment Exhibition. Education Fair The Education Fair is a complex event presenting the whole spectrum of issues related to education. At theme exhibitions addressed to diverse groups of recipients, the exhibitors present offers related to education, the start of professional career and to school equipment. Every year, the fair is visited by 30 thousand students, teachers and head teachers. The organization of the event is the result of the joint initiative of Poznań International Fair, the Teacher Training Centre in Poznań and the Marshall’s Office of the Wielkopolska Province.
From kindergartens to universities – all educational entities try to show their most interesting side at the fair.
Education Books for Children and Young People
For little and a little bigger readers The Books for Children and Young People – Poznań Trade Fair Meetings is a tempting offer not only for young bookworms but also for teachers and illustration-lovers. This is where young readers can meet the authors of their favourite books. It has already become a tradition that those who instil love for reading in children are awarded at the fair. The Little Pegasus awards are granted in two categories: ”Children’s books author” and “Friend of children’s books”. Moreover, the results of the Polish nationwide competition for young readers ”I like reading” are also going to be given. Yet another attraction at the Poznań Trade Fair Meetings is going to be the Illustrators Exhibition featuring the works of artists creating pictures and graphics for books. POZNAŃ FAIR MAGAZINE
The Education Fair is first of all the place where schools, universities, kindergartens and educational institutions can present their offers to thousands of their future students. The fair gives them practically unlimited opportunities to show their best sides – shows, scientific experiments, artistic performances and workshops help young people get a clearer picture of their future educational path. It is them that give the fair its unusual dynamics and characteristic atmosphere. Every year, the Education Fair attracts crowds of students and their parents. What brings them here are opportunities of direct meetings with representatives of schools, educational
institutions and organizations, and obtaining first-hand information that cannot be found on the Internet. For teachers, the organisers of the fair prepare an interesting programme of lectures and conferences.
Career A novelty at the 14th Education Fair will be the CAREER Exhibition, where young people – mostly students and graduates – will be able to find the offers of internships, practices, full and part-time jobs, training courses and foreign scholarship grants, consult professional advisers and learn about the situation in the job market.

POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO
Piotr Kamiński Manager of POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO and EURO-REKLAMA I can promise today that next year Poznań will be the capital of the Polish media industry. From 10th to 12th March 2010, at the premises of Poznań International Fair the second edition of the greatest event for the television industry in Poland is going to be held – the POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO fair. At the same time, you will be able to see a new face of the EURO-REKLAMA Fair. I can safely say that carrying out both of the projects at one time and place will make the joint event the greatest fair for the media in Poland.
media world in Poznań The
The success of the first edition of the POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO fair in 2009 made it possible to create in Poznań the greatest event of the media world in East-Central Europe. Poznań Media Expo has also grown to be a forum of exchanging views and forming opinions on important subjects related to the media. It is an excellent place for companies working for the television industry to promote their products among professionals. The next edition has a chance to become an even more successful event, gathering together enterprises from the whole television industry. POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO
Close-up of television market POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO is a fair for companies looking for a common platform of communication in order to freely exchange experiences, information and offers. The organizers of the second edition of the PME fair are addressing it to professionals interested in obtaining direct information on new products in the industry and wanting to learn more about opportunities and threats of the television market. The thematic scope of the programme of this year’s fair concerns the most important issues and problems of the market. The programme has been created in cooperation and thanks to the involvement of institutions organizing electronic media in Poland: the National Council of Radio Broadcasting and Television (KRRiT), the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE), the Polish Chamber for Electronic Communication (PIKE), the Polish Chamber of
www.mediaexpo.pl
Information Technology and Telecommunications (PIIT), the Polish Chamber of Audiovisual Producers (KIPA), the Polish Chamber of Digital Radiodiffusion (PIRC), all of which belong to the Programme Board of POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO. Participants of the scheduled discussion panels will talk about all the most current aspects of the situation in the television industry.
What’s new in advertising The television industry is constantly searching for new, attractive forms of advertising. During the POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO fair, the Polish Chamber for Electronic Communication (PIKE) and the Polish Chamber of Audiovisual Producers (KIPA) are going to present their proposals and activities in the field. It is worth noting that an audiovisual directive, which allows for hidden advertising in the form of product placement will have been introduced by the end of 2009. The subject
will definitely be covered by the thematic scope of POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO.
Two related sectors The advertising market is one of the main driving forces behind the television industry. The natural consequence of this situation is the similarity between the fair events devoted to both industries. In March the television and advertising industries are going to meet at the premises of Poznań International Fair, as POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO is going to be held at the same time as the Euro-Reklama fair. This is going to be a truly large-scale event. The similarities between the events will on the one hand give their participants a possibility to make additional contacts and on the other – will be an excellent opportunity to present their advertising offer. POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO fair is unquestionably an event worth participating in as a place of meeting of all major TV market players.

Three days of talks on marketing The already well-known Poznań EURO-REKLAMA fair will go through a significant metamorphosis in 2010. The event will include two thematic exhibitions: Digital Printing Expo and Visual Expo, instead of the Outdoor Expo and the Gift Expo fairs. Since the POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO fair is to be held at the same time – the whole event will definitely be the biggest media event in Poland. EURO-REKLAMA: Digital Printing Expo • Visual Expo
An important meeting The Poznań spring meetings of the advertising industry have for years been the number one event in the calendar of the most important exhibition events for the out-of-home media sector in Poland. For exhibitors it has been a unique place for meetings with clients and business partners, as well as an opportunity to make new business contacts. It has also been a forum integrating all those operating in the advertising market. In the face of the rising demand, the beginning of 2010 is a perfect moment to assert your position in the market and an excellent opportunity to present your commercial offer. According to the estimates of Poznań International Fair, more than 200 companies from 10 countries are going to take part in the EURO-REKLAMA Fair. As a result, in 2010, the fair will become a platform for important discussions, as well as a place where opinions on subjects essential for the whole industry emerge. A rich programme of discussion panels and conferences, with Polish advertising standards authorities and institutions operating in the market as participants, will make it possible to hold debates at the highest level. The fair will be attended by people making key decisions in printing companies, advertising agencies and outsourcing agencies providing marketing and PR services, representatives

of marketing and PR departments in companies, representatives of media and publishing houses. In 2009 more than 240 professionals from the visual communication sector attended the conference devoted to complementary visual communication in digital signage.
Large format and marketing communication A new and clear proposal of specialising the Poznań advertising and marketing fair will make it possible for publishers to precisely place their exposition and at the same time reach their target customers more accurately. “The new form of the EURO-REKLAMA Fair is a response to the expectations of exhibitors and attendees, and we are positive that the changes we have proposed will consequently bring benefits to the participants of the fair,” says the manager of the fair, Piotr Kamiński. The Digital Printing Expo Large Format Printing and Advertising Printing Exhibition includes, first of all, large format and advertising printing, materials and machinery used for the production of advertisements, advertising services and offers of professional publishing houses and industry portals. The offer of the exhibition is addressed mostly to advertising agencies, BTL agencies, media houses, promotion offices of local self-governmental units, political organizations, network clients such as stores, gas stations, telephone
operators, graphic design studios, i.e. all those professionally involved in the world of advertising printing. The Visual Expo Marketing Communication Exhibition is devoted to professional issues related to particular kinds of advertising, such as: outdoor and indoor media, digital signage, ambient, design, light systems, POSM, publishing services and comprehensive event services. It is going to be a meeting place for marketing professionals from companies operating in a variety of industries. All the participants of the fair may count on a very interesting programme of the events accompanying the exhibition. The schedule of the events is going to be updated until the very last moments before the exposition so that it will include the most current issues interesting for professionals from the world of marketing and advertising. The schedule will be available on the websites of both of the events.

TRADE FAIRS ABROAD
WHAT’S AHEAD
Passport to export
Filip Bittner Manager of the project of Polish trade fair exhibitions abroad For several years Polish enterprises have been using the assistance of MTP also when presenting their offers in foreign markets. It’s been already six years since we started organizing Polish companies’ exhibitions at foreign fairs and the activity has quickly developed. Now, our foreign offer includes 50 renowned fairs and shows and for each of them we are able to prepare the exhibition of an interested company from A to Z. In 2009 we provided our services to about 100 exhibitors participating in foreign fairs, so the total size of the exhibition space we prepared was more than 2500 m2. In 2010 the figure will certainly be even larger due to the revival of the world economy. Enterprises willingly take advantage of our foreign offer because they usually perceive us as a reliable partner, tried and tested during many fair events in Poznań in which they have already participated. We provide our exhibitors with a great facility, as they can count on professional services before, during and after the fair. These include: renting an exhibition space, preparing and carrying out the stand construction, providing company representatives with transport to the fair and during the event and with non-stop organizational assistance. We simply take care of the whole formal part of the organization of a company’s fair exhibition. What about the business part? Of course we also handle business issues related to such a fair trade trip,

including meetings with potential recipients of the company’s products or databases, which make it possible to acquire future contractors. Both Polish and foreign partners really appreciate the fair-related meetings we organize for them, as the meetings constitute an enormous facility for both sides as far as making contacts is concerned. We have a lot of experience in this field. Recently, we have introduced a new form of support: we assist companies in obtaining EU funds for export development. We provide support at every stage of the procedure: from preparing and submitting the application to carrying out all of the project’s assumptions. The Innovative Economy Operational Programme – Passport to Export – Measure 6.1, which I am talking about, is directed at micro, small and medium enterprises. Soon, the first companies whom we supported in obtaining the funds are going to present their offers at fairs in Europe. Judging from the perspective of these several years of experience, could you say where do the most of Polish enterprises go? Polish companies exhibit in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Today, Eastern markets are still the most popular, although not as much as they used to be in previous years. In Ukraine, the most popular trade fair events are those related to the construction industry, the Construction and Architecture exhibition or the Aqua-Therm exhibition of installations. Then, Romania and the Construct Expo – Ambient construction exhibition, Utilaje and Antreprener and the Indagra Food trade fair of the food industry. The food industry enterprises are also willing to participate in the SIAL fair in Paris and Alimentaria in Barcelona. Thank you for the interview. Interview by Dorota Krawczak

LEADERS SPEAK OUT The data of the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) on the 1.7 per cent economic growth in the third quarter of 2009 confirm that Polish enterprises have successfully coped with the effects of the world-wide crisis, and their optimistic forecast for 2010 has a real chance to come true. Apparently, this optimism is to a large extent the result of the investment projects financed from EU funds allocated for Poland for 2007-2013 …. Marek Kłoczko, secretary general of the Polish Chamber of Commerce (KIG)
Ryszard Grobelny President of the Association of Polish Cities
Do Polish cities appreciate the benefits resulting from the availability of EU funds? They certainly do. The authorities of cities see the opportunities arising from the possibilities offered by EU funds. These include, first of all, a unique opportunity for local development and a way to reduce civilization differences between our part of Europe and the “old” EU. Thanks to the financial support from the EU we can invest significantly more in technological and social infrastructure in Poland, which translates into better living conditions of local communities and therefore supports the issue that is of the greatest importance for all local self-governments. What is the opinion of the Association on the rate of EU funds use in Poland? What are the prospects offered by the possibility of using the funds within the European Funds 2007-2013 programme? We have a highly positive opinion on the rate of use of the available EU funds. The largest bulk of the resources were earmarked for roads and transport investments and for the protection of the environment. In general, local self-governments make a good use of European funds, especially those coming from the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund. Resources from the European Social Fund earmarked for the Human Capital Operational Programme have so far been often unavailable for us and used to a limited extent. That is why we are content that the Committee for European Integration of the Association of Polish Cities has established an effective regional cooperation with the Ministry of Regional Development. The aim of the cooperation is to remove barriers and formal restrictions for local self-governments and to allow them broad access to the resources of the European Social Fund. It may be a good moment to emphasize that it was the ESF which helped local self-governments of many EU countries to finance numerous and interesting revitalisation projects (such as the circle of fortifications in Copenhagen). There have already been some first concrete results of the activities of the EFS Group, working within the Team for simplification of the procedures as regards the utilisation of EU funds. These concern taking into account the suggestions of the Association of Polish Cities in the Implementation System of the Human Capital OP as regards, for example, the problem of the requirement for a treasurer’s countersignature on an application for funding or the suggestion to make the competition documentation available to beneficiaries quicker than it is the case now.

Funds received from the EU support Polish entrepreneurs in their efforts to improve their competitiveness. In accordance with the 2007-2013 programme, for the first time the resources earmarked for supporting competitiveness and cohesion are to be larger than those for agriculture and rural development. What effect will the resources have on the development of the Polish economy? In the nearest future the EU funds will be of fundamental importance for the development of the economy. According to the estimates of the Ministry of Regional Development, the Polish GDP growth in 2010-2014 is likely to be 1,3-3,0 percentage points higher as a result of the implementation of programmes financed from the EU funds. Without the funds it would be difficult for Poland to achieve economic growth. The GDP growth results achieved in 2009 were a phenomenon on the European scale. Is the current level of the use of the EU funds for companies’ innovativeness sufficient? The use of the EU funds for co-financing is satisfactory – mostly within Activity 4.4 of the IE OP, which covers “new investments of high innovative potential”, in the case of which most of the allocated resources have already been used. It is estimated the present application round will be next to last in the current financial perspective. This means that – unless the level of the allocation is changed – next year entrepreneurs will have the last opportunity to take advantage of the funds for co-financing of investments in innovation. It is worth emphasizing that the indicators of the use of aid funds presented by the Ministry of Regional Development clearly show that the quality of submitted applications is constantly improving. According to the National Chamber of Commerce, the indicators of the use of the EU funds could be even better if the resources allocated for direct support for entrepreneurs within regional operational programmes were increased.

More self-government investments thanks to EU funds
Chairwoman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Regional Development
The time of crisis calls for innovative thinking and innovative actions, but also for hard work. We must use all the tools that the European Union has at its disposal. The EU Member States, including Poland, and the EU must work hand in hand and coordinate their actions with one another. Both in Poland and in other countries of the EU, wise investments in energy or in counteracting the climate change may double our future benefits, improve the quality of life of our citizens and contribute to the wealth of the society. This, however, is only possible if we involve the whole Polish and European potential in working together for the sake of the new ideas and innovations, and if we invest in the economy so that when the crisis is over it can grow stronger and become more competitive than it is now. We have at our disposal our own regional and national assets, but also the EU assets. Confronted with the challenges of today’s world and in the struggle against the current crisis – we must make full use of these assets. (from the speech made at the16th Economic Forum in Toruń, on 20th April 2009)
Poland as leader of EU funds implementation The European Commission data on the use of the resources of the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund confirm that Poland is the unquestionable leader of the funds implementation.
Competitive Dairy products thanks to EU funds Tadeusz Nadrowski
President of the “Ostrołęka” Dairy Co-operative The “Ostrołęka” Dairy Co-operative is a significant producer of milk and high quality dairy products in the market. It keeps modernising its production solutions and technologies, and at the same time constantly broadens the range of its products. Have EU funds been of any help as far as the modernisation of the Co-operative is concerned? In 2005-2006 we took advantage of the SAPARD Programme, and in 2007 – of the Sectoral Operational Programme: Restructuring and Modernisation of the Food Sector, Rural Development and Improving the Processing and Marketing of Agricultural Products. Making use of EU funds we developed production and warehouse buildings and a milk powder warehouse, we purchased production lines for producing and packing of ESL milk, butter machines and milk tank trucks. We also completed many works related to the infrastructure of the Cooperative. In our factory in the town of Nidzica we renovated production rooms and bought pasteurizer with a degasser. The return from EU funds covered 50 per cent of the qualified costs. Apart from that, thanks to EU funds we also constructed a production and warehouse hall and equipped it with more modern milk production and processing machinery. We also purchased new vehicles for the transport of milk, which made the whole process quicker and more efficient. As a result we can now be proud of a really great factory. Nevertheless, we keep planning further modernisation and development of the company. Recently, we have carried out a large investment invo-
lving the replacement of a bag filter in the milk powder plant. We are also thinking of new products and new technological lines. What is your opinion on the competitiveness of Polish dairy products in the European Market? After Poland entered the European Union, Polish producers of dairy products modernised their factories and technological lines. This allowed them to achieve a very high quality and a large variety of products. Therefore, I think we have a great potential to compete and sell our products not only in the EU but also in the world market. Many companies launch new products as products are the weapon to be used when fighting for the position of a company in the market. We also do a lot to be among the leaders, which is why we have introduced so many new products: the Milandia ESL milk, the butter and cheese with Omega-3 and Omega-6 acids, the Milandia fruit cheese, the Milander blue rokpol cheese, the Milani desserts and the Pinokio butter for children. You must constantly work to stay in the market and we do not forget about it, although our dairy products have already won recognition both in Poland and abroad. It is worth emphasizing that the “Ostrołęka” Dairy Co-operative has been one of the leading largest producers and exporters of skimmed milk powder. It is a product we export almost all over the world. Our best export product is sold to such distant and exotic countries like Mexico, Algeria, Iran or Cuba. The “Ostrołęka” Cooperative is also an important producer of milk, various kinds of cheese and cream, as well as the special ESL Milandia milk. Is the POLAGRA-FOOD Fair a good place to promote your products? The fair gives companies an opportunity to present their offers at one time and place to a great number of consumers and potential customers. Taking part in the fair is also a kind of test for companies and their products, as they are evaluated by professionals, clients and journalists. The fair prizes, such as the MTP Gold Medal, prove the high quality of products and facilitate their promotion in the market. The “Ostrołęka” Dairy Co-operative has received as many as two medals this year – for the healthy Omega 3&6 butter and for the Milandia peach cheese. The medals mean for us more than just awards – they are the evidence that the direction of development we have chosen is right.

As of 27th October 2009, the total value of the applications for intermediate payments received by the European Commission has been more than EUR 1.7 billion. In this amount, about EUR 597.5 million is the value of applications submitted by Poland. Together with the funds Poland has already received, the value of all the applications for intermediate payments submitted by Poland to the EC amount to nearly EUR 1,6 billion. Taking into account the total of applications for intermediate payments, Poland ranked the first (with the amount of EUR 1.6 billion), followed by Germany (about EUR 1 billion) and Spain (about EUR 737 million). ”Poland can use EU funds. We spend as much as we have planned. We are certain to meet the most important assumption of the anticrisis package introduced by the Ministry of Regional Development for this year, i.e. injecting the amount of 16,8 billion zlotys from EU funds into the Polish economy. The value of the contracts made with beneficiaries will significantly exceed 90 billion zlotys”, Jarosław Pawłowski, the Deputy Minister of Regional Development, said at a conference in November 2009. And the Minister of Regional Development, Małgorzata Bieńkowska, claims: ”It seems quite certain that in 2010 we will be able to spend more than the scheduled 25 billion zlotys.” The impact of EU funds on the development of the Polish economy is clearly visible. The surveys conducted among enterprises which received European support for research and practical implementation of the research results in 2004 – 2006 show that 84 per cent of the surveyed enterprises recorded an increase in revenues, 77 per cent – a growth in the number of clients, 72 per cent – an increase in the market share. Much has changed on Polish roads, in towns and cities, and as far as the protection of the environment is concerned. At the same time, experts (such as Jerzy Kwieciński, the former Minister of Regional Development) claim that ”the true acceleration in EU infrastructure investments in regions is yet to come”. The modernization of 6888 km of regional (”voivodship”) and commune roads (for EUR 3.4 billion), and 1123 km of railways (the modernisation of railway tracks – EUR 322 million) is planned by 2015. The most – EUR 6.72 billion – will be spent on environment protection investments. 4/2009

MULTIMEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT FAIR
Show for 30 thousand players “Frankly speaking, with all these crowds I’m feeling a bit confused as to where I am – is it still Poznań or the peak of the holiday season in Zakopane?” – wondered the reporter of the TVN television network. Thousands of young people filling the fair pavilions were truly impressive.
The PGA Fair is a unique event, which unites three worlds: electronic entertainment, sociable games and paintball. For three October days crowds of fans of these areas of entertainment appeared at the MTP premises. They were attracted by new products, presentations and competitions prepared by the fair exhibitors. The programme of PGA events was unusually rich and every attendee was able to find in it something that interested him or her.
T
his year, PGA was held earlier than usually – in the middle of October instead of the end of November – and it lasted one day longer. Friday was devoted to the Media and the industry. This made it possible to organize exclusive, prepremiere shows of games, to invite special guests and organize incredible attractions.
Pure fun This year, visitors of the PGA Fair were able not only to see the pre-premiere shows but also play the latest, often also pre-premiere, games, including: FIFA 10, Forza Motorsport 3, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Początek, Pro Evolution Soccer, Lips 2, Ogniem i mieczem, Avatar, Need For Speed Shift, Assasin’s Creed 2 and many, many more. There was also an opportunity to meet some of the world’s best game makers – the representatives of the Bioware company, not to mention

Debate on Polish games market On the first media and business day in the history of PGA, journalists and representatives of the industry met at a debate on the Polish market of games. Among the discussed topics were: the digital distribution of games, the PEGI classification and current trends in the local and world market. Attendees could also receive information on the size of the Polish market, its current condition and other interesting issues. Among the
participants of the meetings were: Marcin Turski (Licomp Empik Multimedia, the President of the Polish Association of Entertainment Software Producers and Distributors – SPIDOR), Jarosław Kędzior (Electronic Arts Polska), Marcin Ziobrowski (Sony Computer Entertainment Polska) and Mariusz Klamra (GRY-OnLine), Piotr Pągowski (Microsoft sp. z o.o.) and Michał Gembicki (CD Projekt).

The twentieth edition of the greatest tourist fair in Poland attracted 718 exhibitors from 39 countries and 25 thousand visitors. 12 thousand professionals visited the fair on the first two industry days.
TOURIST FAIR
20th edition has ended Travel agencies, tour operators, accommodation administrators, sanatoria and health resorts, SPA and wellness centres, carriers, business tourism organizers – all this is just a part of the numerous entities that presented their rich offer at the TOUR SALON trade fair held in Poznań in October. For the first time the offer of Polish tourist businesses was so visible thanks to the workshop on inbound tourism – DISCOVER POLAND.
F
or professionals, the TOUR SALON Trade Fair is first of all an opportunity to present and advertise their offers, and to make new contacts in the industry. The Business Planer programme – implemented by MTP and gaining popularity ever since – led to the arrangement of more than 400 business meetings. At the same time, the fair visitors enjoyed the festival of leisure and relaxation offers.
DISCOVER POLAND Discovering active Poland The innovative shape of the DISCOVER POLAND inbound tourism workshop, devoted mostly to adventure tourism, gave Polish entrepreneurs a chance to present their offers to tour operators from all over the world and to show them the so far unknown, active face of Polish tourism. Business matchmaking enabled both sellers and buyers to
find partners for business talks without having to waste time on effortful search for them – this part of the task was done for them by MTP specialists for business meetings. 200 of the arranged meetings between Polish entrepreneurs and their potential business partners took place, including meetings with tour operators from 10 countries, such as Germany, Belarus, Italy, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Great Britain, Georgia or Australia. DISCOVER POLAND was an opportunity to directly promote Poland among foreign leisure time organizers as a place offering unique possibilities of spending one’s free time. “Most of foreign tourists coming to Poland know only Cracow or Warsaw, whereas there is much more to Poland than that,” explained the representatives of companies presenting their offers at the workshop. “You can travel on a horseback through the pastures of the Bieszczady mountains for hours without meeting anyone or not see any signs of civilisation during canoeing for a few days, although we are in the centre of Europe. Such
forms of active leisure are difficult to organize anywhere else.”
Conferences, workshops, training The programme of the event included also training offers. The dominant subject was the internet. The conference on “E-fficient marketing in the tourism and hotel industry” run by independent experts who presented the latest e-marketing research results and trends clearly showed the significance of Internet browsers in the marketing strategies of hotels and tourist companies. The conference was complemented with Internet advertising workshops being part of the AdWords Seminar Leader programme and a review of tourist websites in the form of the “Well Sited Tourism” competition. The OtoWakacje. pl Internet portal presented workshops in the series of Tourist Academy of Internet Business.

For the first time, MTP, in cooperation with the Polish Chamber of Tourism, which also celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, awarded new prestigious prizes for cooperating with the tourist industry and for promoting Poland abroad.
Long and short journeys
Jubilee reflections The exhibition on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of TOUR SALON prompted the participants to look back into the past. It was accompanied by the exposition of the winners of the Polska Travel Photo competition organized by the Polish Chamber of Tourism, the “Trips around Poland” exhibition of photos by Mikołaj Długosz organised by the ”Podróże” [Journeys] magazine and the exhibitions prepared by the ”Nurkowanie” [Diving] magazine.
This year’s edition of the fair abounded in special events and surprises, such as souvenirs for visitors, the Speedminton Polish Open games, trips around Poznań in a historic tram setting off from the area of the MTP premises, or even a spectacular show of changing a bus colour from white to gold. As part of the series of meetings with travellers – called the Travel Kaleidoscope – you could also listen to stories from the edges of the world about travelling Mongolian rocky roads, the countries of South America, India, Tibet, Afghanistan and Somalia.

O

Lots of learning and fun The Model Making Exhibition has become an invaluable opportunity for many modellers to exchange experiences and a great source of knowledge for new fans of the model making hobby. At the fair you could observe the work of experienced modellers, who were very willing to answer the questions of newcomers to the world of model making. The Polish Association of Railway Modellers and Railway Lovers organized a professional modeller’s workshop in order to present the art of model making to less experienced hobbyists as well as possible. At the Allegro stand you could learn about the technique of painting of miniatures and at the AMC stand children could have carefree fun drawing pictures. There were also shows of assembling and soldering of rolling stock elements in 1/32 scale. What aroused the admiration of model making fans was a model steam locomotive depot in 1/87 scale. It included equipment necessary for the operation of steam

The audience could also admire the skills of the Polish Cyclotrial Champion, who defeated an obstacle at the height of 125 meters. Had it been an official competition, a new record of Poland at bike jumping would have been broken. The Indoor RC Car Race for children received great attention.
Sea at fair In order to present the capabilities of model vessels a miniature artificial sea was created at the fair in the form of a pool that was filled with 75,000 litres of water! The exhibitors presented also masterpieces of the model making craft, such as wooden model sailboats from different historical eras.
Nevertheless, the show would not have been fully successful if it had not been for the planes flying high over the visitors’ heads. There were helicopters and remotely controlled aircraft, which the visitors could control themselves, finding out that it was not as childishly simple as it seemed.
Western City For the first time the fair was attended by the Model Railway and Models Lovers Association from the USA. Thanks to their passion for modelling other visitors of the fair could see a 40-meter long model of American railway. The model was created in a western style and included two tracks with wooden sleepers made in accordance with all technical standards. Every element was handmade and it took five years to precisely assemble all the elements. The elements were all made of natural materials, such as wood or metal, as the authors used only such materials as were used for the real railway.

STONE INDUSTRY FAIR
Beauty of stones discovered The merger of the Wrocław KAMIEŃ fair and the premier Poznań STONE fair resulted in the creation of the greatest in this part of Europe common event for the industry – the KAMIEŃ-STONE Stone Industry Fair. The fair was held for the first time from 4th to 7th November in Poznań and it was an unquestionable success with regards to the richness of the presented offer.
For the first time in Poznań, for the first time together – the KAMIEŃ-STONE Fair turned out to be a very successful event.
T
he agreement between Poznań International Fair and the GeoserviceChristi company from Wrocław, working together on the organization of a fair for the stone industry was welcome with significant enthusiasm by the industry, which was visible in the high turnout of the industry’s representatives at the fair, the rich and incredibly varied fair expositions and the involvement of professionals visiting the fair.
New technologies and trends The fair was visited by more than 8 thousand professionals. Over 300 companies from 20 countries presented their offers in the area of 15 thousand square meters. Apart from stone processing technological solutions, visitors could also see various kinds of stone from all over the world, including famous Italian marbles and granites, marbles and sandstones extracted in Spain, Turkey, India or South Africa. Those who attended the Poznań fair had an opportunity to learn about modern design and interesting types of finishes for stone

Just as in previous years, also at this year’s fair there were special attractions in the form of national expositions organized under the auspices of agencies or institutions of particular governments. This time, comprehensive solutions related to environment protection and municipal services management were presented by: Austria, Denmark, France, Ireland, Canada, Germany, Norway and Switzerland. The exposition comprised of six industry sectors: Water and Sewage, Energy and Renewable Energy, Waste and Recycling, Air, Noise and Vibration, Climate Change and Environmental Education. This year, for the second time, POLEKO was accompanied by the KOMTECHNIKA International Trade Fair of Municipal Technologies, which was an opportunity for suppliers of municipal technologies to meet professionals from local self-governments responsible for municipal services management and representatives of municipal services companies, businesses that provide cleaning services, companies responsible for maintenance of green areas and municipal road maintenance units and cooperatives.
Waste management The problem of waste management is one of the most serious responsibilities of local self-governments whose representatives are traditionally the largest group of the POLEKO visitors. No wonder then that it is waste management that the Minister of the

Environment decided to make the leading subject of this year’s edition of the fair. A two-day conference entitled ”Waste management – opportunities, threats and new technologies” was organized at the fair by the Ministry of the Environment, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management and the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Poznań. ”Waste management – conditions and challenges” was the topic of the 13th International Ecological Congress. Waste management was also the lead theme of the annual debate organized at POLEKO. This time, the discussion was entitled: ”Energy from waste – pipe dream or necessity”. The same topic was discussed at a seminar entitled: ”Energy - from - Waste: what goes in? What comes out?” organized by the European Suppliers of Waste to Energy Technology. The Embassy of Norway, Innovation Norway and Green Business Norway organized the ”Norwegian panel”, a seminar devoted to such subjects as: ways to improve the quality of recycled plastic materials, recovery efficiency of specific material types from the municipal waste stream and packaging waste collection and recycling system in Norway. Another event was a conference organized by the National Chamber of Waste Management, Green Business Norway and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management on the topic of the ”Integrated state-of-the-art waste management system in the light of Polish and Norwegian experiences.” An event that has already become traditional at the POLEKO Fair is the Recycling Forum accompanying the
Recycling Exhibition, which is a special exposition of technologies and devices for waste recycling and processing. The topics of this year’s forum included: recovery and recycling of packaging waste and hazardous waste.
Youth Climate Summit This year, for the second time, POLEKO hosted the participants of the Youth Climate Summit, organized by ”Gazeta Wyborcza”, Poznań International Fair and the City of Poznań. The attendees of the summit were the finalists of the nationwide competition organised by ”Gazeta Wyborcza” for the best film promoting energy saving. Hundreds of children from all over Poland gathered in Poznań to adopt a message to the participants of the December UN climate change conference held in Copenhagen. The prize for the winners of the aforementioned film competition was a trip to Copenhagen during the climate change conference.
Science for the Environment The Science for the Environment exhibition was organized at POLEKO for the fifth time. It was devoted to innovative offers presented by over 30 R&D centres, scientific and research institutes and other institutions specialising in broadly understood ecology. The participation of Polish scientific institutions was co-financed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

GMINA focused on new solutions
I
n November Poznań became a meeting place for providers of services and products for self-government administrations and representatives of local authorities from all over Poland. The first edition of the GMINA Fair was a presentation forum for new solutions in the area of urban architecture, technological infrastructure, facilities for the disabled, education, culture and sports, and IT solutions for public institutions. The offer of the first edition of the GMINA Trade Fair for Municipalities, Cities and Regions was extremely rich. The fair exhibitors showcased comprehensive solutions facilitating the functioning of administrations and improving the comfort of living of inhabitants of municipalities, cities and villages. Some of the products were as unique as the support system for the hearing-impaired to be used in public buildings, solar powered street lamps made with the use of the LED technology or virtual walks in cities in the form of multimedia presentations. It was a unique opportunity to present all those products directly to local authorities.
Funds for investments A significant part of the Local Government and Business Forum was devoted to the subject of obtaining resources for investments. The Ministry of Economy was involved in the organization of the forum, with its experts presenting the rules of applying for funds, and the principles of preparation and evaluation of applications. The forum was held under the honorary auspices of the Minister of Regional Development, Elżbieta Bieńkowska. The Local Government and Business Forum dealt also with the issues of cooperation between local authorities and
private investors. The idea of a public-private partnership is nowadays extremely popular in many countries of the world. It involves joint activities of public authorities and private capital taken in order to carry out projects that in the past were sole responsibilities of public authorities. This idea is being implemented in Poland only now. The experts invited to take part in the debate presented models of cooperation with a private investor and benefits resulting from it, they analysed case studies and talked about additional sources of financing investments. Other PPP issues were also discussed during a conference organized by the Agency for Supporting Local Initiatives (AWIL).
For investors The INVESTFIELD Property and Investment Exhibition, which accompanied the GMINA fair, presented investment offers of particular regions. An additional attraction of the exposition was the presentation of offers of 30 municipalities of the Wielkopolska region represented by local activity groups. Another part of the INVESTFIELD exposition was the model Investor Service Centre, operating by the Association of Wielkopolska Municipalities and Counties. It included an information centre providing data about investment areas in the Wielkopolska region, a consultancy desk for potential investors, a local self-government intervention centre and a contact point for businesses interested in cooperating with local self-governments.

TRADE FAIR REPORTS ART & CRAFT FESTIVAL
Artistic shopping for Christmas In the first days of December, the eyes of those who passed by the MTP main entrance were caught by an unusual sight – through the enormous pavilion windows overlooking the street, passerbys could see crowds of people among sculptures, easels, walls hung with pictures and beautifully lit and decorated stalls with handmade objects. All this was possible thanks to the Art & Craft Festival, which changed the fair hall into an open art and handicraft gallery.
N
early four hundred artists and handicrafters brought to the fair the whole variety of absolutely unique, handmade objects. Paintings, graphic arts, tapestry, sculptures, stained glass, ceramics, jewellery, bags, clothes, hats, decorative chests, interior decoration, Christmas decoration – all such works of great and small art could be admired, bought or especially ordered at the Art & Craft Festival.
Art at hand
The festival visitors had an opportunity to experience an easy contact with art at its best. Artists showed the festival guests a significant choice of their paintings and exquisite works of applied art – jewellery masterpieces and objects made from glass and ceramics. There were also sculptures, graphic art pictures and artistic photographs.
An impressive exhibition was organized by the Association of Polish Artists and Designers called “Know the Changes”. In this special festival space one hundred artists from Poland, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, the United States and France presented more than 300 works, including drawings, graphic pictures, paintings, tapestries and sculptures. The festival attendees emphasized that such exhibitions organized at the MTP premises were unique opportunities to encounter real art. “I do not often go to art galleries. I somehow feel I do not belong to the world of artists of which they are part,” explained Marta, one of the visitors of the Art and Craft Festival. “But I come to the festival every year and I do not feel a stranger here! Here, art seems so close and available to everyone – you can feel free to talk to artists and buy things. I am just considering buying one of the paintings at the exhibition.” The Association
of Polish Artists and designers organized also a conference devoted to the subject of changes in contemporary art.
In search for gifts The fair visitors crowded around stalls with artistic handicrafts. They were very much interested in everything that was related to the upcoming season: Christmas and Christmas tree decorations, and gifts. Especially that most of the showcased products could become Christmas presents. “The great interest in the offers of the fair exhibitors is understandable”, says manager of the Art & Craft Festival Zofia Strzyż. “More and more people are looking for products alternative to those offered in chain and department stores. What is desired is the uniqueness of gifts and Christmas decorations.”
