Pavilion 5 is currently the largest building at the grounds of the Poznań exhibition centre and the only one that is capable of housing the showrooms of several hundred clothing brands that are presented at the fashion fair ever year. The exhibitors – leaders of the Polish clothing and footwear sector – come to Poznań to make new business contacts and to sign contracts for supplies of new clothes collections with boutiques and internet outlets. In this way, the Poznań Fashion Fair has become an efficient link between the works of fashion designers and their end users – customers of clothes or footwear shops. This year’s August Poznań Fashion Fair has been divided into three zones. The offer of clothes, lingerie and accessories for the season of spring and summer 2012 is to be presented at the NEXT SEASON Exhibition of Clothing, Lingerie and Accessories, whereas the collections for the season of autumn and winter 2011/2012 are to be presented at the FAST FASHION Exhibition. At the BTS Exhibition of Shoes, Leather and Leather Goods you will be able to find the latest models of shoes and leather goods.

Let franchisors be seen This year’s fair is going to continue the action of promoting franchising in the fashion industry started by the spring edition of Poznań Fashion Fair. The organisers set themselves a goal to match make franchisors with their potential partners, i.e. people who think of starting a clothes or a shoe shop. To make it easier, the stands of companies offering franchising cooperation are going to be especially marked.

International Food Product Trade Fair

Trade fair of strong brand F

or the twenty-sixth time Polish and foreign professionals of the food industry are going to meet in Poznań in September at POLAGRA-FOOD trade fair. The participation in the fair is an excellent opportunity to present the representatives of European markets with ones offer and a good chance to establish international cooperation.

Time for changes POLAGRA-FOOD is a strong brand, recognisable in the market, and of a long tradition. Last year, the trade fairs of food and packaging industries, which were taking place at the same time, attracted over 1300 exhibitors; the exposition covered the area of 70 thousand sq m, featured 400 novelties and was accompanied by several dozen conferences, discussion panels, training courses and tastings. The fair was visited by over 45 thousand people. Nevertheless, it is time for changes – as soon as in September we will see a completely new face of POLAGRA-FOOD. While Polish food is appreciated in the whole of Europe and the potential of the Polish food industry is noticed abroad, experts claim that, so far, all this has not been fully translated into the international commercial success of Polish food products. The organisers of POLAGRA-FOOD decided to take advantage of the upcoming Polish presidency of the European Union in order to change the situation and support the promotion of Polish manufacturers. In order to present the offer and the potential of the food industry in the best way the organisers focused on organising an attractive and thematically coherent exhibition featuring the most important sectors of the food industry. A diverse of-

fer has been prepared to respond to the needs of particular sectors, making it possible to fully meet the needs and expectations of enterprises operating in the food industry. The exhibitors will be able to showcase their offer at the Food and Drink Exhibition, the Wine and Spirit Exhibition and the new Franchising and Store Equipment Exhibition. • The Food and Drink Exhibition is a rich and diverse exposition of food products visited every year by the representatives of network outlets, wholesalers, distributors, retailers and manufacturers of food products. • The Wine and Spirit Exhibition is a venue for presenting and tasting a rich offer of wine and sprit industries. The exhibitors and visitors of the Wine and Spirit Exhibition will have at their disposal special, fully equipped tasting rooms. • The Store Equipment and Franchising Exhibition is a space for the presentation of the latest solutions in the field of commercial interior design and a platform for communication between franchisors, franchisees and other people interested in this system of sale.

Donata Paszkiewicz, Manager of POLAGRAFOOD, says that there is significant interest in the fair manifested by foreign traders: We expect the arrival of traders from all over Europe, as signs of great interest are coming to us not only from the largest commercial and traders’ networks, but also from Polish embassies, chambers and commercial counsellors. At the invitation of Marek Sawicki, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, this year’s fair is also going to be visited by the representatives of 27 European ministries.

International fair The fair promises to be extremely interesting and international. The interest in the fair recorded by the organisers so far is three times more significant than in the corresponding period before the previous edition of the fair and there have already been more applications. Among those who have already confirmed their participation in the fair are exhibitors from Spain, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Greek, Turkey, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, China, Sri Lanka and Mexico. The fair is to be accompanied by numerous trade events and initiatives, including the DISTRIBUTION FORUM and the Sugar Industry Congress, dedicated to traders. The fair is to be held under the honorary auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. by Anna Adamska

Breeders’ jubilee celebration T

he National Breeding Animals Exhibition (KWZH) is permanently inscribed in the calendar of Poland’s most significant livestock industry events. Enjoying immense interest among both exhibitors and visitors, this exposition is a place where for 25 years you have been able to see the best specimens of almost all breeds of farm and breeding animals, gain expertise in the breeding and care of animals, and participate in original shows and competitions. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the exhibition in its current form has been organised at the grounds of Poznań International Fair (MTP) since 2001. Breeders come to Poznań For the last ten years breeders from Poland, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands have presented over 14 thousand animals at the exhibition seen by nearly 420 thousand people! During this year’s edition of the event, the organisers expect about 400 exhibitors, who are going to present about 1200 animals of 156 species. The thematic scope of the exhibition is going to cover all species and breeds of farm animals. Traditionally, visitors can view the most beautiful specimens of horses, beef and dairy cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, chickens, ostriches, fur-bearing animals (rabbits, chinchillas and nutria), bees, and fish. A distinguishing feature of the event is its extremely rich and varied programme, the key element of which is the evaluation of animals in the show ring, when you can admire

the most valuable specimens competing for the prestigious titles of Champions and Vice Champions. Young visitors will not be disappointed either, as – like every year – there will be many attractions and educational meetings for them.

Polish Protected Breeds Exhibition Poland has a long tradition in promoting the conservation of indigenous breeds, therefore it has been possible to maintain the high genetic diversity of individual species and enable the survival of many valuable breeds. You will be able to see some of them at the very interesting Polish Protected Breeds Exhibition organised by the National Research Institute of Animal Production. The last year’s exhibition featured more than 131 animals and 30 flocks of poultry – the repre-

ince its foundation in spring 1921, the Poznań Fair has always been a special place. It has sparkled with ideas that have not even been dreamt about in other Polish cities. The presence of the Fair continuously and visibly modified the “genes” of Poznań, because the history of the Fair has interwoven with the history of the city and its residents more than it has been the case with any other Poznań company. We would like to present you with some subjectively selected interesting details from the distant history of the Fair from the previous century. The selection is a very modest but telling illustration of just how special the Fair has been. And it is never going to stop.

1 Aero-Targ Aero-Targ was an aviation company established on the occasion of the 1st Poznań Fair on May 28th, 1921. It was the first Polish airline offering regular domestic and international flights. The company had at its disposal a fleet consisting of six Junkers F-13, borrowed from a Gdańsk company Danziger Luftpost, which at that time were the most modern flying machines in the world. As many as 58 flights were made during the time of the fair, 28 of which were domestic flights Poznań – Warsaw – Poznań and 30 of which were international flights to the Free City of Danzig (today Gdańsk). Altogether, in that period, the planes carried 100 passengers and 3 tonnes of letters and parcels. Unfortunately, after only eight days from the inaugural flight, the promising activity of the airline was interrupted by officials from the Ministry of Railway (to whom the air transport was subject). They accused the Aero-Targ company of the

illegal use of aircraft belonging to a German air enterprise. Consequently, the Poznań pioneers of scheduled aviation services lost the license.

2 Belweder “Belweder” is the name of the representative restaurant of the Poznań Fair. It was opened on the occasion of the fifth in a row and, at the same time, the first international edition of the Fair, which took place in 1925. For a long time, “Belweder” was considered the most elegant restaurant in the city. The restaurant, designed by engineer Stefan Cybichowski, had a magnificent banquet hall, which the Management of the Fair willingly rented for various purposes, including sumptuous and uproarious parties. The most uproarious of them, in the strict sense of the word, took place in November 1933. When in the restaurant, rented on the occasion of a rally of the National Party, one of the party’s activist, Bogdan Jarochowski, mounted the platform and present-

- 12 -

7 ed a devastating critique of the Sanation government “the clamour rose among the audience and the opponents of the National Party present in the room started to shout, throw chairs and provoke fights in order to disperse the rally.” Part of the audience rushed to flee through the windows and doors, whereas those who stayed fought a regular battle, using canes and brass knuckles. 19 participants of the fight were seriously injured but the restaurant itself was prepared for any forms of collective activities and so it was able to resume its catering activities after just two days of a thorough cleaning. Twenty-four years later – in 1957 – the building became the seat of the first Poznań television broadcasting station. While the station was to be housed in the restaurant building only temporarily, it eagerly used the opportunity to stay there for... 40 years.

3 Blask “Blask” or Wielkopolska Chemicals Factory used to be famous for the production of soap, washing powders and shoe polish. It was also responsible for an unprecedented and never repeated openair show, organised on May 17th, 1929, at the grounds of the Poznań Fair, on the occasion of the General National Exhibition (PeWuKa). situation also hesitated to ask for directions out of embarrassment in front of women. Today, all such problems are solved by means of international signs. They include, for example, a circle, a circle cut by a sharp triangle and a triangle alone. The first sign means ‘for women’, the second – ‘toilets in general’, the third – ‘for men’.”

sands of people who gathered under the spring evening sky were able to see an enormous, more than ten metres high, portrait of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, conjured up with fireworks. It was the largest image of the Polish leader that has ever been publically shown. It would be unfair not to mention that this successful show had a contributor – the world famous firework producer from Vienna called Sirius. This historic show blazed the way for other artistic enterprises, including the Malta Festival or the great open-air concerts that since the mid-90s have been held many times at the Poznań Fair grounds.

4 International signposts The signs that showed ladies and gentlemen way to appropriate toilets were imported in 1931 and presented at the 10th jubilee edition of the Poznań Fair by merchant Stanisław Czachowski, the owner of the famous in the whole Poland store offering equipment for catering businesses. The plates with nowadays commonly known pictograms – the circle and the triangle – were a total novelty at that time, so they aroused understandable excitement not only among the Fair audience but also among traditional news-lovers – newspapers. The trade fair reviewer of one of the newspapers, “Dom Gościnny”, wrote: “What was the embarrassment of ladies when no other women were there to ask where they should go to satisfy their needs. And the other way round – men in similar 2/2011

Tabromik was the name of Poland’s first air mail stamp. The air mail service was provided by Aero-Targ, which was a company founded to provide services to the guests and clients of the 1st Poznań Fair in May 1921. In agreement with the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs the carrier launched two editions of stamps of denomination 25 and 100 marks. The name that have stuck to these, nowadays unique, stamps came from the letters T.A.B.R.O.M.I.K. placed on each of the stamps to inform (albeit not quite clearly) that the issuance of the stamps was sponsored by Tadeusz Bronisław Mikołajczak – the owner of the Poznań factory of vodkas and liquors. The first air mail in history paid for with the use of T.A.B.R.O.M.I.K.S was delivered from Poznań to Warsaw as early as on May 29th, 1921, one day before signing the relevant agreement with the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. Warsaw received the Poznań novelty rather reluctantly and on the first day only one postcard was sent from the Polish capital to Poznań. Not many stamps of the first Polish air mail service survived until nowadays.

6 Poznań Eiffel Tower In 1929, the Poznań Eiffel Tower was to replace the Upper Silesia Tower, constructed in 1911 on the occasion of the East-German Exhibition of Agriculture and Industry, and not particularly popular among Poznań residents. Later, in the 50s of the 20th century, the Poznań “Spire” was constructed on its remains and has grown to be the symbol of the Poznań Fair. The plan was to construct a new tower at the entrance of the Fair, opposite the railway station. The construction was to be crowned with a movable crane with an arm more than ten metres long, which was to support the lift taking passengers from the railway station on the other side of the street, over the street and to the Fair grounds. The French constructors who were to make this wonder were confident that such a world-class attraction – for which the city was to pay about 1 million zlotys – would lure hundreds of thousands of tourists to Poznań, but the conservative nature of Poznań residents, reluctant to spend money on luxurious investments, finally won. As a result, until 1939, Wieża Górnośląska remained the dominant construction of the Fair.

- 13 -

This all Poland “automobile event”, organised on the occasion of the subsequent fairs, took place every year starting from July 27th, 1929. The first automobile “starry rally” attracted to Poznań 210 contestants from Warsaw, Łódź and Cracow, but only 156 cars reached the finish line in the full time. The next day the largest automobile parade in the history of the city took place, with 180 cars and more than seven hundred car lovers in them. The speciality of the subsequent editions of the Automobile Rallies at the Poznań Fair was the socalled balloon chase. Cars followed a passenger balloon flying east and dropping especially marked pennons. Those who found and submitted them to the Competition Jury were guaranteed to be given an awards. In the first race, the automobiles covered the distance of nearly 100 km, reaching the village of Wierzbocice (in the former Kalisz province), where the balloon landed, putting an end to the rally emotions.

8 Large, larger, the largest... Thanks to the Poznań Fair and exhibitions held at the Fair’s grounds, Poznań residents saw and possessed many things earlier than the residents of other Polish towns and cities. Often, such pioneering attractions exceeded the contemporary visions of modernity both in terms of size and boldness. The size of the General National Exhibition (PeWuKa) held in 1929 on the Fair’s grounds, which had been extended to 65 hectares, was unprecedented and so far never repeated again. It was the largest exhibition that has ever been organised in Poland. On the occasion of PeWuKa, in the record period of just one year, the largest hotel in the then Poland was build – the Polonia Hotel. Apart from that, there was the largest restaurant in Poland, put at the disposal of more than 4 million of the Exhibition guests. Thanks to its 500 waiters, the restaurant was able to serve 2.5 thousand people at the same time. Also for the fun of people, the largest in Poland amusement park was organised. At the same time, the largest fountain in Poland was constructed, which gushed water to the height of over 30 metres. Apart from that, the first in Poland live broadcast of a football match was transmitted from the duel between the teams of Warta Poznań and Philips Eindhoven (5:2 for Warta). At the grounds of the Fair, which was then enriched with 112 pavilions, an enormous square called St Mark’s Square was arranged, surrounded with classicist columns – the only St Mark’s Square in Poland. Much as this list could be longer, this is where we will finish it. Marcin J. Januszkiewicz In 2001, MTP initiated the creation of the book by Marcin J. Januszkiewicz and Adam Pleskaczyński entitled “I haj vivat Poznańczanie”, awarded a year later by the Polish Book Publishers' Club (PKWK). In spring 2011 the author made a documentary television film entitled “90 lat w stronę przyszłości” (“90 years for the future”), devoted to the history of the Poznań Fair.

Aktywni 50+ TRADE FAIR FOR MATURE PEOPLE

Trade fair for mature and active This year’s Aktywni 50+ Fair was visited by 3,500 people, i.e. 75 percent more than last year. The exhibitors’ special offer targeted at mature people was this year also richer. At nearly 100 stands visitors could see not only what the market has on offer but also the proposals of NGOs and Poznań municipal units.

During two days of the trade fair concerts were organized. The uncontested star of the Sunday afternoon was Irena Santor, accompanied by Czesław Majewski.

T

hanks to the direct contact with the exhibitors, the visitors were able to obtain a lot of detailed information on the offer for the elderly, talk about financial issues, enquire about technological problems related to modern communication technologies, find interesting tourist offers and ideas for active leisure time. Those for whom looks and style are important could consult beauticians and image

consultants. The fair was also an excellent opportunity to take care of one’s health and take advantage of the fair offer of free preventive medical examinations and doctor’s advice.

Workshops and lectures Moreover, the fair offered possibilities to develop one’s passions and talents. Those interested in art could take part in special workshops, including plein air painting, decorating with the use of the decoupage technique, origami. What enjoyed great interest was educational and psychological workshops. There were also workshops for job seekers. The point of personal vocational counselling enjoyed extreme popularity. The fair visitors were also interested in lectures, especially those on the subject of health and safety.

Sports activities In one of the three special sports spaces shows and training classes were held in various disciplines, including therapeutic qigong, i.e. old Chinese fitness improving exercises, yoga, dance and movement classes, choreotherapy, Nordic walking, tai chi and aerobics. I am positively surprised with the large number of visitors, emphasised Stanisław Golumski, an exhibitor representing the company Resinex. EPLA Plastics and Rubber Processing Fair

This year’s EPLA – greater in every way! The third edition of the EPLA International Fair of Plastics and Rubber Processing was a success. During the three March days of EPLA, the Poznań Fair was visited by over 1,500 professionals. Both the visitors and the exhibitors welcomed the new form of EPLA as an event devoted mainly to the offer of raw materials for the sector of plastics and rubber in Poland. Business meets in Poznań TThis year’s EPLA attracted twice as many exhibitors as the previous show. 53 enterprises presented raw materials for plastics and rubber processing, as well as machinery, equipment and technologies used in their processing. What enjoyed great popularity was the Injection Moulding to Lease Exhibition organised in order to facilitate contacts between clients and injection moulding plants with production capacity to use. This year’s EPLA can be regarded as successful. During the three days of the event it was visited

by 1,500 professionals. Such significant turnout translated into the satisfaction of the exhibitors. When organising the trade fair performance of our company we expected mostly meetings with local companies. However, I was positively surprised as apart from local enterprises, which we already cooperate with, our stand was visited by many representatives of enterprises which we are only just starting to cooperate with, said Director of Krakchemia SA Rafał Selent.

Rich programme of events EPLA was not just a business-to-business event, which is the essence of each show, but also a venue for numerous interesting side events, very popular among the visitors. A lot of people participated in the seminar organised by the EKOGUMA Association, one of the trade partners of EPLA. The seminar included a speech by Prof. Władysław M. Rzymski from the Łódź University of Technology on reactive processing in elastomer technology, and a lecture on rubber in the automotive industry by Dr. Karol Niciński from the Institute for Engineering of Polymer Materials and Dies (IMPiB). The Founding Convention of the Plastics Technologist Club attracted over 200 members. The participants listened to a speech by Wouter Geurts, a representative of the international technology platform called ECP4, created by the European Plastics Converters (EuPC). Wouter Geurts, ECP4 manager expressed his hope that his visit would be an introduction to close cooperation between both organisations. That the Technologist Club was deemed interesting at an international level was also evidenced by the visit of a renowned guest from Slovakia – Professor Ivan Hudec from the Institute of Polymer Materials of the University of Technology in Bratislava. His talk was devoted to polymer materials in the automotive industry. The participants also listened to a lecture entitled “Polymer nanocomposites” given by Professor Bolesław Jurkowski from the Institute of Materials Technology of the Poznań University of Technology. I must say that although we were very optimistic about the new form of the raw materials trade fair, we were also concerned if we would be able to meet the expectations of our exhibitors and visitors. I am happy that this year’s show can be summed up as a 100% increase – in the number of both exhibitors and visitors. I am convinced that the direction we have chosen will quickly trigger fast growth and that next year EPLA will be again twice as large, concluded Marcin Gruszczyński, Manager of EPLA.

MOTOR SHOW Automotive Fair

The largest automotive show in Poland One world premiere, fourteen Polish debuts and the total number of about 800 cars were presented during this year’s Motor Show Fair held in Poznań from March 18th to 20th. The event was reported by all the largest Polish media, there were 300 accredited journalists and 46 thousand visitors. This was a truly record edition of the fair! Beautiful comeback MOTOR SHOW is a consumer’s event addressed predominantly to all the enthusiasts of the automotive industry and four-wheel or two-wheel users, but particular points of the event’s programme are prepared also for the whole families. It was the attractive shows, presentations and premieres combined with the family-friendly and interactive form of the fair that was so highly appreciated by the guests and the exhibitors of this year’s edition. For many years MOTOR SHOW was one of the greatest events of the automotive industry in Poland, says Rafał Błachowski, Manager of MOTOR SHOW. This is the fair the enthusiasts of the automotive industry and users of cars and one-track vehicles had been waiting for. It was here in Poznań that they could see the latest models of cars, which often made their market debuts at the Poznań Fair, or numerous novelties from the automotive world. I am happy to say that MOTOR SHOW has regained its position in the calendar of trade fair events and that we have witnessed its spectacular comeback, which turned out to be a real success and a true festival of the automotive industry. Bearing in mind the expectations of the media and the key clients – the exhibitors – and the partners, the organisers continued with the form of closed events called the MOTOR SHOW VIP Day and the MOTOR SHOW VIP Night. Both of the events were addressed

to the invited guests, including many journalists of the general and trade press. This day abounded in presentations, conferences and shows. It's impossible to imagine such a large event as MOTOR SHOW without a participation of the largest Polish media. One of the most important media partners of this year’s fair was the editorial staff of the TOP GEAR magazine, which prepared a unique exposition, including such cars as: a Bentley Continental Supersport Cabrio, a Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet and a Jaguar E-Type that made its debut at the fair in Geneva exactly 50 years ago.

Premieres, shows, events For the first time in the world, in Poznań, a dreamlike Maserami was shown – made by a German factory Mansory, which can also be proud of its Cyrus car made of carbon fibre and based on the Aston Martin DB9. For the first time in Poland the best cars of the following brands were shown: Bentley, Audi, Hyundai, Peugeot, Toyota, Ford, Grecav, Mercedes, BMW, Chevrolet, Lexus, and more. There were also amazing motorcycles, including the premiere shows of the models of Ducati, Yamaha and BMW. The unique atmosphere of the fair was guaranteed by the lavishly organised stands, including the most spectacular of them – several metres high exhibitions prepared by Fiat Auto Poland and Kulczyk Tradex.

Crowds or customers were attracted by the amazing price offer of Fiat prepared exclusively on the occasion of the Poznań fair. One of the stars of this year’s MOTOR SHOW was the Volkswagen Passat. It was here in Poznań that the Polish premiere of its longest multimedia presentation tour took place. The combination of the 3D mapping technology, a traditional presentation and the perfectly rounded audio effects made an amazing impression, attracting thousands of visitors to the exposition. One of the main events of the fair was the show of luxury cars held as part of the Motor Show VIP Night, featuring a Porsche 911 Turbo S and (for the first time in Poland) of an AUDI A6, a Bentley Mulsane, a Mercedes CLS and Mansory Cyrus The Motor Show VIP Night is currently one of the most prestigious events of the automotive industry in Poland.

Attractions for the wide audience The programme of this year’s MOTOR SHOW was expanded by an event addressed to the enthusiasts of car audio and vintage cars. The attractions of the Family Town and the circuits for karts and quads, on the other hand, were popular with the whole families. Thousands of visitors participated in dozens of competitions and games. Attractions for the youngest had been prepared by the team of Warta Poznań and the dance group Metrum. The inflatable playground from the company Jacko-Land was also immensely popular and so was the “Segway Show” prepared by the company Incognito. A special programme of events was also prepared by the State Fire Service, which – apart from the shows of equipment and ways of operating it – included also the presentation of rescuing techniques. Historic exhibits were also very popular. 150 of them came from the rich collection of the Wielkopolska Province Automobile Club. One of the main points of the programme was a competition for the fair participants, with a passenger car as the award. It was won by Jarosław Stachowiak, who left the fair as the owner of an Alfa Romeo MiTo. At the fair you could also meet many sports and show business celebrities.

Stars on the Main Stage All the trade fair guests emphasised the special atmosphere and the overwhelming flow of positive emotions that could be experienced at the fair. LOOK and beautyVISON once again strengthened their positions as the most important events for the hairdressing and cosmetic industry in Poland. While the events themselves gained new professional exhibitors and visitors, their regular guests were able to discover new possibilities the fairs offered. To be more precise: the Main Stage was erected at the heart of the trade fair, where for two days shows were held that could be compared to theatrical plays. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the presence of the Goldwell brand in Poland a special

show was prepared by Oliver Szilagyi and Sascha Haseloff from the GOLDWELL Creative Team. Another posh accent at the LOOK fair was the show by the Polish hairdressing team that won as many as four gold medals and three bronze medals at the World Hairdressing Championship – Hair World Paris 2010. One of the hairdressing masters present at the fair was Andrzej Matacki – the world and European champion. LOOK and beautyVISION delighted with glossy, intensive colours, bold haircuts and most of all – the innovativeness of modern world trends in hair styling and

cutting, as well as in make-up and nail decoration.

World shows Truly spectacular shows for the visitors were prepared also by such brands as BaBylissPRO, Kemon, Artego, Matrix, Subrina Professional, Montibello and Michał Krzyszycha. As part of the performance prepared by the brand Joanna, dancers from the Polish version of “Celebrity Come Dancing” – Czarek Olszewski and Blanka Winiarska – gave dancing classes to the Poznań audience. Before, however, they themselves performed a perfect tango. The leaves in the Linden Avenue trembled also when Justyna Steczkowska – a popular Polish singer and the ambassador of the brand Racoon – appeared on the stage to charm the audience with both her voice and looks. Other interesting shows took place at the stands of the exhibitors, where POZNAŃ FAIR MAGAZINE

LOOK Hairdressing Forum and beautyVISION Cosmetics and Solaria Forum are an annual meeting of creativity, colours and unique ideas. Competitions and championships constitute a real showpiece of the fairs and they give an opportunity to observe masters in their trade. Polish, Italian and French stylists delighted with the talent and the fresh perspective of hairdressing trends. And there was more to the event than that.

Masterfully talented As part of the LOOK fair, the Polish Open Hairdressing Championships of juniors and seniors, the Polish Open Hair Extensions and Thickening Championships and the KREATOR Competition were held – the most awaited events in Poland, opening the way to career for young and talented stylists. Also this year, filled with passion creators manifested their imagination and real talent. Their works were evaluated by an independent jury consisting of the editors of hairdressing trade journals.

Congresses and Championships For the fifth time at beautyVISION the International Polish Nail Art Championship – Nail Expert was held. The theme of this year’s championship was the “Dance Show.” The special guest of the 5th Nail Export beautyVISION Congress was Pepyn Borrel – a world famous master of nail

stylization, a trainer and a juror in international competitions. The programme of cosmetic fair could not be complete without the competition in the field of make-up. During the Polish Open Professional Make-up Championship competitors took part in two contests: the WAMP Make-up and the Carnival Make-up.

Knowledge is beautiful This year’s seminars and lectures concerned modern technologies in aesthetic medicine, the use of nanotechnologies in cosmetics, medicine and pharmacy, as well as the situation of aesthetic medicine in Poland in the context of the certification of aesthetic medical doctors. For the eighth time the Solar Seminar called “Sunrays in Hair” was held.

Way to success This year’s LOOK and beautyVISION got involved in pro-social activities and started to cooperate with the Dress for Success charity and the Business and Professional Woman Association. Among the guests of the jointly organised conference of “Woman’s way to success” were businesswoman and patron of arts Grażyna Kulczyk and traveller Martyna Wojciechowska. Famous women, active in the social, cultural and political life of the country, took place in the debate concerning the issue of equal payment; among the participants were: Minister Elżbieta Radziszewska – the government plenipotentiary for equal treatment, conductress Agnieszka Duczmal, editor Grażyna Banaszkiewicz and Ewa Kruk – the ambassador of the W. Kruk brand.

TRADE FAIR REPORTS POLIGRAFIA, EURO-REKLAMA

Printing and advertising fairS

The synergy of novelties

During the four days of the simultaneously held EURO-REKLAMA and POLIGRAFIA both of the fairs were visited by the total number of more than 12 thousand professionals who came to see the exposition prepared by nearly 400 exhibitors. For a couple of days the grounds of Poznań International Fair (MTP) turned into a centre of state-of-the-art advertising and printing solutions. Two sectors together The April fairs turned out to be an excellent opportunity to see the latest technologies, trends and products new to the printing market, as well as novelties in the sector of media and advertising materials. POLIGRAFIA is an offer for manufacturers, distributors of machines, printing equipment and services. At EURO-REKLAMA you could familiarise yourself with the latest offer of producers and distributors of machines and equipment for the production of advertisements. The fact that both the printing and the advertising events were held simultaneously made it possible to take advantage of the synergy effect and comprehensively present the potential buyers with the offer of both of the markets. What joined both of the events was the initiative called Digital Printing Expo Exhibition, which featured digital, large format and advertising printing. Among the enterprises that took part in the Exhibition there were: Agfa Graphics, Alma Trend, Atrium, Candy Digital, Integart, Polkos, Plotserwis, Ricoh, Teba.

International atmosphere The importance of POLIGRAFIA for the printing industry is evidenced by a significant number of regular exhibitors –

renowned and recognised enterprises – and a growing number of new participants. This year among exhibitors there were such companies as: Ac&C, Agfa Graphics, Alma Trend, Derya, Digiprint, Duplo, Eukalin, Ferag, Fujifilm, Henkel, Infosystems, Introzap, Kodak, KBA CEE, Norma System, Oce-Canon Group, Opus, Xerox and Xeikon. Nearly 30 percent of enterprises taking part in the Poznań meeting were foreign exhibitors. The representatives of enterprises presenting their achievements at the fair came from: Armenia, Belgium, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Spain, the Netherlands, India, Israel, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, the USA, Hungary, Great Britain and Italy. The most numerously represented foreign countries were Germany, China and the Netherlands. The richest of the represented offers was the offer of printing and after print processing.

Compendium of printing knowledge The conferences accompanying POLIGRAFIA were excellent opportunities to talk to experts and make new business contacts. A numerous audience was gathered by the educational conference on “Vocational printing education system in the era of digital

breakthrough” prepared by the COBRPP – Research & Development Centre for the Graphic Arts in cooperation with MTP. The meeting was addressed to teachers and managers of secondary vocational schools and to all those dealing with vocational education of printing enterprises’ workers. Many participants wanting to learn something more on the subject of Colour Management took part in a training course organised by the Polski Drukarz publisher in cooperation with MTP. Several dozens of people were interested in listening to the debate on the future of books in the digital world organised by the Polish Chamber of Printing. Nearly 200 people were attracted by the Poligrafia conference on printing de-

Trade meeting For 20 years EURO-REKLAMA has been gathering the representatives of advertising agencies, media houses, local governments, city, commune and district promotion departments, regional tourist organisations, network clients as well as the marketing environment – experts, managers and traders. The fair has been a unique place for the integration of the whole environment operating in the market of advertising and business creation. This year the following themes were explored: visual communication (outdoor/indoor), advertising services, providers of advertising services, exhibition services, ambient advertising, materials and equipment for the production of advertisements, POS, trade organisations, specialised publishers, trade websites and many more. The exhibitors showcasing their products came from many countries, including: Belgium, China, the Czech Republic, Spain, Lithuania, Germany, the USA. The fair attracted also market leaders such as Achilles Polska, Atrium, Flexvision, Trodat Polska and Tryumf.

Competitions, conferences and contests voted to the subject of market and market novelties. What aroused many emotions was the presentation of the first in Poland report on the printing market in Poland, prepared by the KPMG and PBKG companies. The presentation was preceded by the speeches of the representatives of Heidelberg Polska and Grafikus on the subject of selected innovative solutions important in the process of printing, finishing and bookbinding, and on the theme of customer care. At the Printing Academy organised thanks to the commitment of the COBRPP - Research & Development Centre for the Graphic Arts and the companies AC&C, Media Center and Fujifilm, future printing experts had an opportunity to listen to the presen2/2011

Great emotions among the contestants, organisers, the audience and the media were aroused by the 2nd Car Wrap Championship, organised by the European Media Group and Poznań International Fair (MTP). Contestants used both their own materials and materials provided by the organisers, and showed their skills in a freestyle contest. The winner of the first place was the company Artgraf from Komorniki. The awards were granted in the Blow Up Hall in the Poznań Stary Browar [Old Brewery]. Apart from that, awards were also given to the winners of a competition organised for the POS sector – SuperStar POLAND 2011. Baking and Confectionery Industry Fair

Fair that arouses emotions

The greatest event for the baking and confectionery industry in 2011 in Poland, organised in Kielce for the third time by Poznań International Fair (MTP), gathered the impressive number of nearly 130 companies from Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania and the UK. Altogether, the exhibitors presented over 80 new products and modern technological solutions for contemporary bakeries and confectionery shops. For five April days the exposition was visited by more than 5,500 professionals, i.e. 10 percent more than during the previous edition of the fair.

Professional fair audience Among the trade fair guests there were both the representatives of small craft bakeries and confectionery shops and large plants engaged in mass production. There were also managers representing commercial networks and on the last day the fair was visited by the students of baking and confectionery schools. The visitors came mostly from south-eastern Poland, but also from Warsaw, Łódź, Lublin, Cracow and Silesia, and even from Eastern European countries, from Lithuania and the Czech Republic. The fair was also visited by a delegation of Russian experts organised by the Saint-Petersburg Institute for Management and Food Technologies. The team of eighteen delegates included sales and marketing directors, the heads and engineers of technological departments, the directors of shopping centres, as well as the representatives of technological higher schools. The delegates met the exhibitors and the representatives of trade organisations, saw the shows of baking and confectionery masters, which were held as part of the Forum of Bakers and Confectioners, and admired the presentations prepared by the exhibitors. They also visited local bakeries and cake shops.

Venue for efficient meetings The exhibitors emphasised the positive outcomes of the trade fair meetings, which often brought about orders and closed deals. The participation in the fair offered the representatives of foreign enterprises an opportunity to acquire broad knowledge of the Polish market and to establish numerous contacts, which are the fundament for setting up branch offices in Poland. The trade fair guests could test specific equipment or even the whole production lines. They were able to expand their knowledge on modern IT and technological solutions that increase the efficiency and the quality of production; they

tasted the raw ingredients, half-finished products, baking and confectionery additives and components that improve the taste and the look of finished products; they let themselves be inspired as far as the decoration of confectionery specialities was concerned. All this was possible due to the fact that among the exhibitors there were manufacturers, importers and distributors of ingredients, baking, confectionery and icecream additives, machines and other equipment used for making bread and cakes, machines used for moulding, dispensing and packing, as well as bakery ovens, systems for labelling, packing and warehousing of finished products. There were also: an interesting offer of cake holders and a wide range of accessories crucial in the work of bakers and confectioners – baking trays and tins, aluminium and stainless cutters, slices, spatulas, measuring cups, brushes and many more.

Practice makes perfect There were many exhibitors who presented the whole production lines – from kneading, through moulding, to baking in professional ovens, stuffing and decorating of finished products. You could learn how donut fryers work, see the shows of confectionery techniques of cutting, icing, chocolate coating, gelatinising, as well as washing and cleaning of confectionary equipment. Apart from that, you could see methods of making all kinds of bread, rolls, baguettes, challahs, waffles, layer cakes and chocolates. The exhibitors willingly shared interesting recipes, presented methods of packing bread, French bread pizzas and cakes in stretch films and methods of packing cakes into cardboard packaging suited for various occasions. Bakers and confectioners encouraged visitors to taste and evaluate the results of their work – spelt and rye rolls, pastries, puff pastries, muffins, marzipan and poppy seed layer cakes, crème

- 26 -

brûlée desserts, donuts and cupcakes. The rich choice of forms, aromas and tastes could make you feel dizzy. The trade fair visitors, attracted by the tempting smell of pastries, were happy to taste delicious and fresh snacks, as well as new flavours of cold desserts, including iced yoghurt and coffee.

Forum of Bakers and Confectioners Sophisticated recipes and taste combinations were presented also during the shows taking place as part of the Forum of Bakers and Confectioners. Baking and confectionery masters presented the production of rolls sprinkled with acacia flowers, rolls fermented in birch juice, small banquet buns for catering purposes and loaves of bread baked on horseshoes, cabbage leaves and potatoes. A special show by baking master Józef Ziółkowski included the presentation of methods of making and baking mouth-watering challahs, bread knots and croissants. Inspiration on how to decorate wedding and birthday cakes in English style and on caramel Easter decorations could be drawn from confectioners who presented their craftsmanship in making marzipan and caramel decorations. Nevertheless, the greatest attraction of the trade fair seemed to be delicate marzipan figurines – clowns, hedgehogs, teddy bears, Easter chickens and bunnies, as well as characters from Walt Disney’s cartoons. The trade fair guests were able to try themselves at making such miniature, sweet work of arts with their own hands.

by Katarzyna Supa

The next event for the baking and confectionery industry is to take place from 7th to 11th October, 2012 as part of the Exhibition of Baking and Confectionery Industry of the POLAGRA-TECH International Trade Fair of Food Processing Technologies in Poznań. The fourth edition of BAKEPOL is to be held in 2013. POZNAŃ FAIR MAGAZINE

www.mediaexpo.pl Poznań Media Expo TELEvIsion TECHNOLOGIes fair

New form of the fair The form of this year’s Poznań Media Expo fair made it different from its two previous editions. Both the trade fair and the conference part were devoted to a single topic – the implementation of the terrestrial digital television in the context of both benefits and threats for the recipient – the viewer.

Digital television for everyone The slogan that all the trade fair events were focused on was "Digital television for everyone". It was discussed from three main perspectives: • the complete shutdown of the analogue television in the middle of 2013 will make it necessary for about 30 percent of Polish households receiving television only from terrestrial transmitters to purchase and install appropriate receivers and to learn how to use them; • for the disabled with impaired vision or hearing the digital television offers many additional functions and services that were impossible or very limited in the case of the analogue television (television transmissions with subtitles and transmissions with the so-called audio description, i.e. a detailed description of a situation and action taking place on the screen); • the knowledge on digitalisation and, primarily, on the dates of the shutdown of the analogue television and the ways of securing one’s access to television is very limited in the Polish society. Among the lecturers there were the representatives of the largest Polish social organisations providing support to the disabled as well as people living in difficult material or life situations. The conference was attended by the representatives of the European Commission, which

2/2011

attaches great importance to the problem of the threat of digital exclusion of some European citizens. This is evidenced by the recent adoption of the document called the Digital Agenda for Europe. The representative of the Office of the Human Rights Defender gave a speech from which you could learn about the actions of this body for the disabled taken mostly in the field of law improvement.

The promotion of digital television at the fair An important element of the promotion of the terrestrial digital television was an exhibition of equipment and lectures. The visitors had an opportunity to ask experts about the advantages of digital television and the schedule according to which it is to be implemented; they could also count on advice on what they should pay attention to when buying a digital receiver or decoder. On the trade fair stands located nearby, the visitors could familiarise themselves with the offer of popular producers of receivers, antennas

- 27 -

and installation hardware. The most technologically advanced equipment showcased at the fair was distinguished with the PME 2011 award called “Digital Super Product.” The promotion of the digital terrestrial television ended with an information session and a show on digital radio equipment waiting for its grand day which is to come after the analogue-digital conversion of television has been completed. The new form of the Poznań Media Expo fair which we have decided on this year has appeared to be successful and so has the idea of closer cooperation with the Polish media regulatory body – the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT). We hope that the next edition – PME 2012 – will be as successful and well focused on a socially important subject and attended by as competent guests as this year’s edition, said Piotr Kamiński, Manager of POZNAŃ MEDIA EXPO.

EXPOPOWER, GREENPOWER, AUTOMA POWER INDUSTRY AND AUTOMATICS FAIRs

Powerful May in Poznań

For a couple of years, power, electrical and automation engineers from all over Poland have been meeting in Poznań. They come more and more numerous, as the fair’s brand is gaining better and better reputation every year and it is doing it with more energy than any other fair event held in Poznań. This year, the number of enterprises participating in the fair exceeded 350 and the exhibitors came from more than ten countries. This year’s block of fairs consisting of EXPOPOWER, GREENPOWER and AUTOMA was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy. EXPOPOWER Innovative power industry The latest products, innovative technological solutions, a rich programme of accompanying events and the record number of 12 thousand visitors – this was how the EXPOPOWER International Power Industry Fair celebrated its 5th anniversary. It was held under the slogan “The Future of the power industry – the power industry of the future.” The exhibitors of the fair showcased offers involving the production, transmission and distribution of electrical power and heat, electrical machines and equipment, wires, switches, control, automation system accessories, lightning protection, energy construction and environment protection in the power industry, and this year – for the first time – lighting. The list of the fair exhibitors included the most important enterprises operating in the power and electrical engineering sector (such as: ABB, Apator, Elektrobudowa, Elektromontaż Poznań, Elektromontaż Lublin, ENEA, Energa, Es System, Hager, Kromiss-Bis, LUG, Mikronika, Philips, Tauron). The premiere edition of the Lighting Exhibition also enjoyed significant interest of enterprises: among its exhibitors there were such tycoons of the industry as Aga Light, ES System, LUG Light Faktory, Narva Polska, Osram, Philips Lighting Poland, Schreder Polska, Siteco Lighting Poland and Thorn Lighting Polska. The exposition was accompanied by a conference on “Energy-efficient light-

ing,” devoted mostly to the LED technology and lighting in architecture. As at the previous edition of the fair the 2nd Polish Electric Power Forum was held, this year under the slogan “New energy law needed now.” The organisers of the conference on “Nuclear power – safe and green source of energy” were trying to allay the fears concerning modern technologies used to obtain atomic energy that have arisen after the failure of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima. The programme included also a scientific and technological conference devoted to the operation of high, medium and law voltage power installations. Apart from that, the Polish Electrical Installation Association (PSE) organised a seminar and there was also a conference on technological novelties for medium voltage switchgears.

GREENPOWER Eco-inspirations Energy from alternative sources is no longer just a fashionable trend. The rising prices of heat and electrical power make it necessary for many enterprises, private investors and local government units to look for such alternative solutions. The tendency manifests itself in the development of the GREENPOWER fair. The International Renewable Energy Fair was this year held for the third time. The majority from among over 80 exhibitors were companies offering solar collectors, photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, boilers and pellets. A total novelty was a hemispheric collector – the only device of its kind in the world, ideal for heating water in swimming pools, supporting the central heating and heating DHW. You could also see tracking systems controlling the inclination of photovoltaic panels so that they follow the sun. Apart from that, there was a domestic power plant based on a combustion engine cooled with a heat pump that receives heat from sanitary water. An important point in the trade fair’s programme was a series of free seminars on “Investments in renewable energy sources” for companies and private people.

Specialised conferences for professional audience concerned biomass and wind power plants, focusing on legal issues, ways of financing investments, etc. Apart from that, the 2nd Polish Forum of Energy Agencies was held.

AUTOMA Fully automatic The group of energy fairs was complemented with the 3rd edition of the AUTOMA International Fair of Robotics, Automatics, Control and Measurement Equipment, with its impressive collection of the latest solutions in the field of industrial automatics. The exhibitors presented a wide range of new products and technologies that are currently being launched into the market. There were solutions related to motive power engineering, control, software, components for automation and the automation of buildings. Once again the Robotic Event was held, at which, apart from standard products, you could see new solutions in the field of linear technology, including ball screw-driven or timing belt-driven linear modules.

efore 1939, among the members of the Union there were many journalists and university professors. The community consisted of such eminent writers as Józef Weyssenhoff, Arkady Fiedler, Emil Zegadłowicz, Zenon Kosidowski, Aleksander Janta-Połczyński, Jan Sztaudynger, Artur Marya Swinarski. The tradition of the so-called “Literary Thursdays”, which has continued until nowadays, started in 1934; the Thursdays are meetings with the most distinguished writers and journalists from all over Poland. The first congress of the Polish Writers’ Union after the Nazis’ occupation of Poland took place in March 1945 and was chaired by Tadeusz Kraszewski. In May, the list of members of the Union included 20 names, among them Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, who became the chief editor of the “Życie Literackie” biweekly. When in June 1946 Iwaszkiewicz became the President of the Main Management Board and moved to Warsaw, Wojciech Bąk was appointed the chief editor and the President of the Union in Poznań. The tradition of the Literary Award of the City of Poznań (dating back to 1927) was then resumed. In 1956 the Polish “Tygodnik Zachodni” journal was created, with the editing staff recruiting from young writers: Bogusław Kogut – chief editor, Przemysław Bystrzycki, Ryszard Danecki, Piotr Guzy, Stanisław Kamiński and Włodzimierz Odojewski. This was also the time when the public activity of the literary group “Wierzbak” started. The group was founded by Ryszard Danecki and Marian Grześczak and it played an important role in the post-war poetic life of Poland – comparable to the role played by the Warsaw group “ Skamander” in the period between the wars. “Wierzbak” organised the first Pol-

ish national poets’ congresses, the so-called “Poznań Novembers”, which have gradually become more and more international. This is documented in the anthology “Wiek Wierzbaka” (Wierzbak Century) issued by the MediaRodzina publishing house on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the group. The events of the martial law were responsible for the fact that not all the members of ZLP decided to remain in its structures that were being reconstructed in the whole of Poland – there appeared a clear division line of 1981. This was illustrated by two consecutive large jubilee exhibitions prepared by the Raczyński Library on the occasion of the 80th and the 85th anniversary of the Union. The then President of the Poznań Division of ZLP Nikos Chadzinikolau was later replaced by Zbigniew Gordziej, who was able not only to maintain the tradition of annual International Poznań Novembers, but also the permanent (since 1945) seat of ZLP in 24 Noskowskiego Street. In January this year the general meeting appointed Paweł Kuszczyński, poet and critic, the President of the Union. After World War II, when the Union turned into a strictly creative association, the prestige of the Poznań writers’ environment was maintained thanks to: Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna, Wojciech Bąk, Wacław Kubacki, Roman Brandstaetter, Jerzy Pertek, Bogusław Kogut, Jerzy Mańkowski, Bogdan Rutha, Eugeniusz Paukszta, Aleksander Rogalski, Egon Naganowski, Włodzimierz Scisłowski, Marek Obarski, Łucja Danielewska, Tomasz Agatowski, Gerard Górnicki, Wincenty Różański, Nikos Chadzinikolau… The Poznań Division of ZLP gathers currently over 60 writers and is the most numerous – after Warsaw – organisation of the Polish Writers’ Union in Poland.
