Musuem of Ref le ction

01

“Architecture is the very mirror of life. You only have to cast your eyes on buildings to feel the presence of the past, the spirit of a place; they are the reflection of society.” - I. M. Pei

Located at Charleston, SC, a historical city with a disjointed waterfront, the well planned historical city did not extend till the waterfront. Just 100 yards away from the city market of Charleston is the waterfront, however it’s not made known or felt like it while you’re in the city. The lack of visual cue that indicates the waterfront is the main reason for it. Obsessed with the historical city and buildings in Charleston, the city showed resistance in accepting contemporary architecture. The Museum of Charleston is designed with three main concepts: the reflection of the city’s pass, reflection of individuals, and reconnection to the environment. A journey of narrative that leads the audience into awareness from the surrounding, to self-awareness within themselves. This project investigates the architectural setting that

creates and illustrates a strong spiritual connection between users and their environment. Designing moments within the architectural setting of this building with the goal of stimulation of senses, touches, visuals, sounds, and spatial awareness.

Acting as the gate-way to the Museum of Charleston and the first implementation of the concept of reflection, nine pillars each with the face slightly shifted and aligned to the direction of the church where the tragic Charleston shooting happened in 2015 that took nine lives.

The dialogue between a building and people happens in a moment, a touch, a shadow, a motion, a scene. That one moment, when time feels irrelevant, connected spiritually, just you and the surrounding space.

“With one leap, the wolf seizes its prey, but the turtle, which is endowed by nature with unusual alacrity when it wants to withdraw head, limbs and tail into its house, is quicker than the wolf. For the famished wolf, it is now nothing but a stone on the road.” - The Poetics of Space - Shells. P.133

A turtle has only known one corner of its shell, one where he hides and escape reality. Little does the turtle knows what’s behind that corner of his armour he sees. The mystery of the shell is one that the turtle will never find out. This installation reverse engineered the shell and the plated armour of the turtle, instead of inside looking out, the audience becomes the turtle that inhabits the shell by stepping forward as they become one with the shell and activates the chained mechanism within. Wonders can be found, and mystery can be realized with the surprises hidden underneath the heavy armoured shell, a secret that a shell never expose. By creating an outer shell like an armour, the interior was created with layers of ribs holding dispensers contained with water replicates the complex biological system of a turtle. A foot pedal was installed as the audience, being the turtle, to active the shell and physically become a part of the shell. The foot pedal triggering air pressure to the water dispenser allows few water droplets to drop into a container at the bottom of the shell’s interior, the ripples are magnified by the spot life showing dances of lights. A shell was generally understood as dark and silence, inside the reversed turtle, a melody plays harmoniously in rhythm with the water drops and dancing ripples amplified by the lights. The exterior of the shell with the sense of impenetrable armour creates a strong contrast against the soft interior with the quality of water and melody as the audience becomes the turtle and explores the imagination of a shell.

MLK Urban Renewal

03

The group project MLK URBAN REVEWAL is located at Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Savannah, our zone ranges from the 34th street from the north to Victory Drive on the south. This project integrates with the concept proposal of a light rail system in Savannah, the light rail system is included within the urban design running through MLK as the main artery to connect to the rest of the city. This project tackles the existing social, urban de fabrication and displacement issues. I and my teammate Abraham Arregui approached the project by looking through history, connecting the successful aspects from the past as well as the present, to introduce a renewal proposal that will resolve or ease the tension within the zone. Taking inspiration from the famous marshlands around Savannah and connecting our zone to a neighbouring artist district – the Starland district – we tackled the issues with three main ideas. A motor school, that would allow existing garages which were seen as a negative impact on the urban fabric, but actually brings opportunity for teenagers to make a living for themselves. A wetland park, acting as an urban retreat as well as a stormwater retreat to help out the occurring flood problems within the area, the big body of water also acts as an agent with water’s calming quality that would ease the tensions in the harsh cityscape. Starland Walk that connects the motor school, wetland park to the neighbouring Starland District provides a niche with galleries and affordable artist studio and further promotes the energization of an improving Savannah.

Teammate: Abraham Arregui

In relation to surrounding context and existing urban fabric, it was critical to address the main existing issues from social, urban setting, programs. The project then shifts to finding a solution through the past, while integrating existing programmes to ensures the renewel urban design proposal provides an opportunity for future instead of as a means of further displacement in through gentrification.

Taking inspiration from marshland surrounding Savannah, introducing a marshland park to the heart of Savannah with a bigger body of water that the city is lack of, enables the water to act as a psychological agent in creating a calming effect to the neighbouring area. Furthermore, the marshland park will act as a stormwater retreat to relief the flood-prone area.

“Destruction breed creation. Preserve the past and design for tomorrow.”

Hurricane Matthew in Oct of 2016 caused big damage to the city of Savannah, many of the treasured live oaks were destroyed. By collecting these debris that would otherwise be disposed, this debris is given a second life as a site model that reflects our spirt of our project. Presenting new opportunities of Savannah’s future while reflecting and preserving the core values and history of Savannah.

“At the enchanted metropolitan twilight I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others--poor young clerks who loitered in front of windows waiting until it was time for a solitary restaurant dinner--young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life. - F Scott Fitzgerald, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby

As urbanization progression continues to ramp up in every corner of the world, population density in major cities skyrocketed. The built environment in cities surrounds the concept of profit generation and capitalism, the decision of moving into cities essentially made people tide into the system of labour in one form or another. Disputes arise between people as resources and space became scarce due to the inevitable by-product of scarification in urbanization. In a metropolis, urban dwellers became physically closer to one another, however, the repeating scenes and routine numb the senses and meaning of relationships between individuals. People became closer in the process of urbanization, yet also further apart than ever. This architectural short film explores the concept of the repetitiveness, confinement, and the relationship between people to build environment, as well as between people, in a modern metropolis. Pigeons, or “rats with wings” that are often maligned as a risk to public health, are the bird that Londoners love to hate. Although it is known that pigeons help clean the streets by consuming what’s thrown on the street, people still hate them due to various reason. The knowledge towards pigeons is limited in modern days sociality as pigeon no long play as important of a role as they did in old times. The Pigeon Tower provide a platform and space for people to understand the bird again through a relaxed environment. From observation of growth and life cycle of pigeon through pathway circulating around the main tower to interacting with the bird through pigeon racing on the two cantilevered platforms. This building provides a step by step interaction with the hated pigeon to allow people to slowly learn to appreciate the bird once again. Besides being an educational building, the Pigeon Tower also act as a social gathering spot and reconnection to the city's famous Regent's Canal. The building contains cafe and dining, as well as leisure, sports equipment rental.

L eather Ln Scaffolding Envelop

The Leather Ln Scaffolding Envelop is an experimental architectural proposal in altering the urban fabric with alternative temporary facades. Taking inspirations from the temporary scaffolding in existing constructions within Leather Ln, this project aims to present a new form of architecture that extends the connection between a building to its surrounding context. By using the strategy used in scaffolding, the design contains two layers of fabrication, the inner layer that provides an unusual geometry to a traditional Victorian style building. The outer layer extends from the top of the building and cantilever over the street to create a temporary shading that changes up the streetscape in Leather Ln. The experimental design was reflected in a scaled down model that was showcased in Central Saint Martin’s annual architecture student showcase.

Abandoned floating platforms in the Regent’s Canal becomes a life oasis for wildlife. Birds use these platform as nest where they would be undisturbed by human activities. Fishes use these platform as shelters and feed on algae that grow on them. Fishes attract birds, an eco-system emerged in this forgotten platform. The Visitor Centre of Regents Canal takes inspiration of this independent cycle of the abandoned floating platform and chain reactions between different elements. The building is designed to be closely related to its surrounding context, gaining attraction to the water of the canal while attracting visitors from the bridge level, street level, and water level. The Regent’s Canal Visitor Centre contains three levels, main entry level act as a recreational rooftop with landscaping, a staircase leads to the main floor of the building where it contains office space and educational galleries, the building slopes between levels to create a smooth transition between the 1st floor and the main gallery space located below water surface. The basement floor below water level contains an educational media room with glass walls the sinks below the water, allowing the light to travel through the water and into the space to create a rippling lighting effect that would fascinate children.

To provide the city of Macau with a unique and sustainable icon for the Taipa waterfront. A landmark at the project location will act as a catalyst linking the Macau CBD with the Cotai Strip. Whilst, the development itself facilitate a non-gaming, but unique leisure shopping, F&B, entertainment, culture and ecological experience for the residents and visitors of Macau. The dynamic form of the tower directly interacts with witnesses from the Macau side and responses to all bridges linking to the Taipa side. Whilst respecting the adjacent sites and the project site, the project aims to be a new gateway into Taipa. A collaboration between two teams within Aedas, our team was responsible for the preliminary form and zoning studies, as well as programme planning and proposal.

With a unique observation deck on 470m high, the development will be a stunning landmark for Asia and the world and help to enhance the position of Cambodia’s business and economic influence and bring great opportunity. The design proposal is the product of two teams within Aedas, my scope within the project includes very early stage preliminary design and visualization as well as preliminary building zoning and programme planning.

Ramsey Solutions Headquarter

Ramsey Solution enlisted GS&P to provide architecture, interior design and civil engineering services for a new 204,000-square-foot, six-story corporate headquarters and 15,000-square-foot employee and customer amenity center, to be located on 47 acres in the Berry Farms development. GS&P’s project team set out to create a flexible, adaptable facility that embraces Ramsey’s spirit of fiscal responsibility and budget savvy while meeting the company’s future growth requirements. The headquarters and amenity center comprise the first phase of a multi-phase development. The space will feature two live broadcast studios and a variety of webinar, blackbox and podcast studios for the company’s broadcasts. The Circle South is a hotel project that includes Retail/ F&B as well as conventional centre. The project is at an early stage; hence details cannot be listed. I was given the responsibility for managing the presentation visualization of the project. I’ve excelled in pushing a new architectural imagery language within the Corporate + Urban Design Division in GSP, multiple options were provided to the team to choose from and the new language was well received within the team.
