Why is it that a generation comes to respect and admire a person so much:> Why is it with some adults we are so eager to learn; we feel so much as if they are one of us; and we seek and greatly appreciate their advice? Perhaps it is because the person has devoted himself to the betterment of that gene ration , and he has given his life to them . The A.E .S. drive was highly successful as the final amount of the drive was well over the goal of $1200 . The Seniors, driven hard by the e ighth grade, got the most money, and a Senior day is planned for the end of the year.

For weeks, juniors write scripts, build sets, and rehearse lines to provide a glowing setting for talented Patriots who perform in the Junior Class Talent Show. This year's production, carrying a roaring twentie s theme, is the major Junior Class fund - ra ising project and will largely finance the JuniorSenior Prom .

Woody Gleason was chosen by the American Foreign Student Board to spend a summe r .in France. Jim White, Cynthia Westmoreland ,and Judy Floyd were chosen to attend Boys' and Girls' State in June, 1965.

Jim White was a regional winner of the Du Pant scholarship to the University of Virginia . There is more responsibility in being a cheerleader than people realize . The cheerleaders devote their time to sponsoring bus trips and preparing for the Homecoming parade . They also spend time making posters, and most of all push ing school spirit and promoting enthusiasm . Without the ir presence, the games would have lacked co lo r and organized patriotism . In the Spring, these girls wi II strive extra hard to qualify as Varsity Cheerleaders for the coming year. The J.V. Th is, o f course, ploys a maj o r ro le, but a lso many other factors enter into a successful season. Thi s yea r we ho ve ho d our shore of victo ries and defeats. Th e real strength of thi s yea r' s team was their obi li ty to come f rom behind on ly to lose by a few points. This ability cannot be taug ht, but it mu st come from the boys t hemselves. As the season progressed the boys began to believe in themselves as a team. Eve ry time the boys took to t he floor they were ready for the opposing team both men ta ll y and physically. Rother than from indi viduals a maj ority of our successes come about t hro ugh team work. Albe marl e High School con be proud of thei r basketboll team. Coach Anthony Loquinton o was born in Phi ladelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended Linco ln High there . Upon hi s graduation from Lincoln in 1956, he en te red T em ple Prep . al so of Ph ilad e lphia where he earned on Ath let ic g rant-i n-ai d to the Un ive rsity of Virginia basketball. He captained the Ca valiers hi s junio r and senior years, recei ving second all-hono r both yea rs. He graduate d in 1962 with a B.S. in Elementary Ed. and received hi s Masters in Guidance and Counseling in 1966. His fi rst coaching position was with Scottesville High in 1962-63, and 1963-64. Th e Io t te r yea rs h is Scottesville team won the Group II , Di strict II Champi onship. Th e next season he was a ss istant freshman coach at the Univers ity of Virginia. Th is is Mr. Laquintonto's first yea r at Albe marl e, and he ha s done on excellent job in leading the Patriots to a wi nning sea son. th this!

The J.V. team this year has an unusually large number of young, inexperienced players. The few sophomores on the team have given team leadership which has tremendously helped . Although the team is young, it wi II probably surpass the record of last year's sophomore team . There is a tremendous desire to improve and win and it has shown in most of our games .

They have the ample size, speed , and desire which is usually not characteristic of a you ng squad . This year the 8th grade team has not one team but two, the Kandles and Downtown Athletic Store . These two teams compete among them sel ves and with other teams wh ich are also sponsored. The Kandles, as of now, do not have a sponsor, but hope to have one in the future . The Albemarle Girls' Basketball Team started ai with a disappointing loss to Waynesboro in a close game 38-37. This broke our 10 game winning streak but the team went on to win the next 8 games in a row . Led in scoring by Cynnie Westmoreland, the girls Varsity really "pulled out" some close ones from Fauquier and a return match with Waynesboro . Cynnie also set a new school record by scoring 31 points in one game.

T The game ended with a 19-15 victory over Fauquier County as Albemarle's Junior Varsity Girls' Basketball Team wound up another winning season. Leading the team in scoring for the season was Lindo Burton, with 41 points to her cred it. Every team has its jinx and William Monroe proved to be the one for the Jayvees . Losing two games to Monroe by two points each added the only notes to on otherwise exciting record of 6-2 . For a team with so little playing experience, our girls did a good job, and ore looking forward to next year with even higher hopes.

Minds ore trained and shaped through the rigorous discipline of individual study and communal exposition . The true student must accumulate myriad-acts and acquire varied skills. Equally important, he must understand the true import of the facts and skills and be able to express clearly his own ideas and conclusions and to discuss these logically with others. Our curriculum is designed to fulfill these complex and vital goals.

The depth and delight of Dickens, Elliot, Thurber, Hawthorne, and Shakespeare become a vital part of the English student's frame of reference . In addition to absorbing great literature, he is drilled in the elements of grammar which are the raw materials for our majestic En g li sh prose . Progressing from the comprehensive introduction in the eighth grade, the math student foll ows the op~ erations and logic of the single algebraic statement through the dimensions of geometry and trigonometry to advanced topics in calculus and logic . More pragmatic, yet vitally useful , the consumer and business math courses offer practical skills for everyday needs . Physical Education courses try to achieve the Greek ideal of a strong, skillful body housing an alert and open mind .

his abilities. Eighth and ninth graders are introduced to the orderly functions of the physical and biological world. In later years these two areas are followed in greater detai !-extensive work with biological directions and microscopic observation; involved and sometimes dangerous experimentation in chemistry and physics . The history, philosophy, and fundamental techniques of art are covered in this course. Ceramics, oils, water colors, sketches-all represent the acquired skills of the students . Perhaps the most important goal is to learn to be aware of the beauty and symmetry both in nature and in the artifacts of man .

The classroom routine is enlivened daily by boardwork, discussion, and audio-visual aids; students may experience another, sometimes unpleasant, but necessary change in schedule in taking make -up tests . Outside the classroom there are the diversions of locker, lunch, and bus, and, occasionally, special programs like those of the U. Va . Glee Club and the Albemarle Players, given to pep up the Patriot's day.

Underclassmen may doubt the sobering amount of effort and thought a Senior devotes to his classes when only the necessary relaxed antics of between-period play are seen. From the murky depths of the Anglo-Saxon era's Beowulf to the hard-hitting phrases of our Churchill , the vast scope of English literature is scanned by the Senior. He begins to understand that "to the victor belong the spoi Is" as he probes more deeply into the complex logic of advanced math and the structures of physics. He is also drilled in acceptable writing skills and analyzes philosophy as the substance of all discipline in compositionhumanities . Thus, a Senior's day is filled with maximum challenge and divers interests.
