St. Anne’s School of Annapolis 2010-2011 Annual Report

A Message from the

H ead of S ch o ol

Last school year, our community came together to generously support the school with over $340,000 in contributions and many, many hours of volunteer time. You gave your enthusiasm and your presence in our school. We had 70% parent participation and 20% grandparent participation in giving. Not only that, but 100% of our board, faculty and staff contributed to the Annual Fund last year. I want to emphasize the importance of such broad support. When everyone is working together and invested in the welfare of the students and the school, we fulfill our mission better and we draw closer as a community. Some of you sponsored our teachers as they began a new humanities program. Some of your gifts helped to make our school a richer, even more dynamic place to work, learn and play. Some of you gave us the gift of your time in setting up for events, chaperoning on field trips, or working with our students. We are deeply grateful for your support, financially and in every other way. I hope you will continue to explore your place here at St. Anne’s School. You are always welcome.

Sincerely,

1

2010-2011

Financial Summary What does your gift to the Annual Fund mean to St. Anne’s School? Your gift inspires, encourages, and enriches learners. That is what a St. Anne’s School education is all about and you make it happen with your support. As you can see from the revenue chart below, tuition and philanthropic giving are the two primary sources of revenue for the school.

Our Mission St. Anne’s School of Annapolis invests in the intellectual and spiritual promise of each student in a community that celebrates diversity and values the dignity of every human being. We challenge students to think critically and creatively, to know themselves as learners, and to govern their lives with confidence, compassion and integrity.

Thanks to the generosity of our community and the careful budgeting and fiscal management on the part of the Board of Trustees and School Administration, the school has been able to sustain and continue to enhance our exemplary program on behalf of the students even amidst persistent uncertainty in the national and local economy.

St. Anne’s School draws from its Episcopal tradition as an independent, co-educational school, serving students in Preschool through Eighth Grade.

Eighth Grade Legacy Gift

As scholars, every student has an opportunity to contribute to St. Anne’s and its spirit each day. But every year, the Eighth Grade class is given a special opportunity to leave its mark by making a legacy gift—a gift chosen especially to honor the school and the education they have received. This year, the Class of 2011 contributed money for a beautiful path and shading in the back picnic area. This will make the back area a better place to play, as well as spare our wonderful staff the work of keeping the halls, stairs, and classrooms free from mud! We are thankful for the generosity of the Class of 2011, and grateful for their thoughtfulness and attention to our school environment. The STAR Grant is The mind is not a designed to offer our teachers opportunities Vessel to be Filled, for professional and but a Fire to be program development. This year, it funded the Kindled. - Plutarch development of a new integrated humanities program for the Middle School. This past summer, our teachers met during an intensive twoweek period to research and develop a curriculum which connected the Social Studies and Language Arts programs more closely. With the results of the research, we have developed an integrated, robust and challenging Humanities curriculum. Students examine topics from multiple perspectives, learn to think critically, generate new ideas and develop evidence-based arguments. We are deeply grateful to the following donors for making our exceptional humanities program possible: • • • •

5k Run /1 Mile Walk

Thanks to the hard work and able leadership of our 5k Race Committee listed below, we increased our race participation by 45% over the year before! As a result, we raised nearly $5000 to support our health and fitness programs and our financial aid budget. We were especially proud to see so many of our students, from every grade, out running. First Grade and Third Grade students won a dress down day for having the highest class participation (60%) in the race. Way to go!

Auction 2011 Race Sponsorship: Place Level The 2011 Auction: A Night at the Races was especially appropriate this year as we ventured a large stake with the help of our generous donors and won big—we raised over 40,000 dollars, with 18,000 dollars dedicated to the school library! Unlike the races, the auction proceeds fund a bet that is very sure indeed—the money will go to support our programs, and give our children the quality programs, care, and attention that they need to be successful. We are so grateful for the generous support of our donors and volunteers for betting on the students of St. Anne’s School! We thank everyone who was able to join us, and look forward to the next auction, on April 14, 2012.

Compass for the Future Ca p i ta l Ca m p a i g n

The Board of Trustees would like to thank all of the families that contributed to our Compass for the Future Campaign! With your help, we raised $1,100,000 and successfully accomplished our three goals: • Invest in People and Program through:

• significant school-wide professional development in the areas of inquiry-centered, project-based learning and responsive classroom approach to whole child development

• continued focus on being a welcoming, caring and inclusive community

• Invest in school’s reputation through an extensive alumni testimonial-based marketing campaign and a school rebranding effort • Triple our endowment

OUR SUCCESS The result of the investment in professional development is clearly evident today as teachers from preschool through the middle school exhibit tremendous cohesion, clarity of purpose, and skill as they work collaboratively to develop in students an imaginative mind, capable of ingenuity, innovation and critical problem solving; a confident, resilient sense of self; the ability to work respectfully and compassionately with others; and the will to find meaning and purpose in the everyday acts of their lives. Our commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive community is equally evident today. We are extremely proud that our student body reflects the diversity of the world around us, as nearly 40% of our students identify themselves as racially diverse. In addition, 50% of our students receive some level of financial support to attend the school, illustrating the socio-economic diversity present in our community. But what we are most proud of is the culture of compassion that has become such a defining feature of the St. Anne’s School community. The alumni-based testimonial campaign and the rebranding has steadily enhanced the reputation of St. Anne’s School in the region as people’s perceptions of our program are becoming more aligned with the reality of what is happening in the classroom. The community and our families now recognize the distinctiveness and transformational nature of an Episcopal educational program that marries exceptional academics with substantive social, moral and spiritual education. Finally, we were able to more than triple our endowment from $150,000 to over $500,000. It is our goal to continue to grow this fund for the long term financial strength of the school. 17
