This one was a little harder to find - initially the results in Google suggested that the Goldener Hirsch was a hotel in Salzburg, Austria: but photos of the area didn’t match the original. I sorted through the photos in Google Images until I found one that did.

The name on the side of the boat (URI) was all the information I needed to find this location. This photograph was by far the easiest to locate.

Based on previous findings, I had an idea that this photograph was also taken in Switzerland. The particular route I focused on fitted well with the other photographs in the set. As for starting my search with Flüelen, well that was just luck.

Based on my knowledge of the area I noticed the letters: KL. S... on the side of the building, and questioned if the missing letters would spell out to mean Kleine Scheidegg.

Hi Katie’ You can send me a scan of the photo; if you have a scanner. If the location is Switzerland then I should be able to identify it as I have visited the country many times and have over 100,000 photos of my own. Unfortunately the Swiss site on fotopic is a bit neglected as it doen’t receive as many visitors as the UK ones; some of these achieve over 100,000 hits per year.

Hi Katie, Well I’m pretty sure that they are not Swiss, definitely Alpine though so its Southern Germany, Austria or Northern Italy. The one with just the train on has the station name partly visible just above the cab of the railcar on the gable end of the building. You might be able to get a better impression of the letters from the original photo. Let me know if you are able to decipher any of them. My investigations continue! regards Ernie

It is not Switzerland nor Germany, it is Italy. Cortina d’Ampezzo to be precise, on a railway from Calalzo di Cadore to Dobbiasco that closed in 1964. Katie, Fascinating pictures, but I’ve no idea about location I’m afraid. I don’t recognise it but its clearly in the Alps and I’ve done all those lines. Its probably a line that is now closed. I wonder if its not Switzerland - the trains don’t look very Swiss. Perhaps northern Italy? I’m not an expert in that area though I’m afraid. Hope that helps a bit? Kind regards, Sam.

This photograph was slightly tricky to locate. Again, I presumed that it was taken in Switzerland (because of the mountainous background) and that the building on the left was most likely a hotel. With nothing other than guess work, I was lucky to be able to recognise the building almost immediately.

This one wasn’t easy to find. On the white building in the centre I spotted a sign, which I thought might help. Using a magnifying glass, I could make out that the letters spelt Aeulestrasse. I knew that ‘strasse’ means road in German. By entering ‘Aeulestrasse’ as a search term in Google, it was suggested that this
is a street in Liechtenstein. In Google I scanned the area, and found the closest match ‘Äulestrasse’ in central Vaduz. It was my Dad who found the final location along this road, and the photo that confirmed it.

In this panoramic photo, the red building is the same one that appears on the right-hand edge of the original photograph. It is likely that the shot was actually taken out of a window of the Adler Hotel (seen above). The old buildings in the background have been demolished and a new one now stands in their place (the pink building on the far right of this photograph). A new road has been created where the derelict building once stood.

River Rhine - Boppard 09 1 2008 -74 by Redstone Hill
Finding the location of this photograph was one of the most difficult. The only defining details are the train line and the river (I assumed that this is a river, not the sea, as there is also a car ferry shown in the photo). Looking closely at the train I determined that it must be a freight train linking
to Rotterdam. Based on my other findings I knew that it must be somewhere in Germany. In the end I simply followed the length of the River Rhine until I found a location that seemed appropriate – somewhere near mountains with a train line in close proximity.

I struggled a bit with this one. I found that Vitznau is the name of a village located on Lake Lucerne (which was consistent with my other findings). The train turntable confirms the location: it is a very distinctive feature, and actually quite rare.
