THE TEA v. COFFEE CONUNDRUM

f I had to define my natural habitat or the environment in which I seem to have spent most of my life and times, it would be hot water. I keep getting into it with alarming and frequent alacrity. Every road taken has led there; every road not taken would probably have arrived at the same torrid destination. While immersion for many has to do with learning new languages in a native setting, my milieu and métier, my native bent, predisposition, predestination and path in life, is a straight line from H to O, preferably at zero degrees centigrade.

I got into it again in Barbados, this time literally.

I was, am and will continue to be a coffee drinker except once in my life when I lived in Belize and my health and doctor teamed up like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods and “tea-ed” off on me. Up to that time, coffee was, to me, the elixir of life and longevity.

Then my doctor informed me that if I wanted to hang on to the first and be assured of the second, I would have to vacate my premises at Maxwell House and stop Starbucking around.

I had to stop my coffee-based Rituals and switch to tea. I felt as if I had been mugged. My wife then informed me that tea was full of anti-oxidants and green tea was the best of the lot. When oxidants just so much as hear a rumour that green tea is around they scatter like pavement vendors when the police are nearby. What I have since found out about tea is that when sipped it is insipid and when gulped it is indigestible.

It is a tradition that one should leaf well alone. It is catching health the hard way and it was through this salutary pursuit of good health that I once more got into hot water without getting into hot water. It is a process that fits me to a tea. My children were stunned. My friends, who had known me for many years as a coffee fanatico and not a mere aficionado, were horrified.

They believed that it is the daily multiple doses of caffeine in the

form of black coffee that kept me from totally succumbing to the hot water that was my bête noir and better half.

Being a total tea-totaller, I gave up the coffee and travelled with the one tea that I can drink most of the time without going green myself. It is a vanilla “infused” black tea from Sri Lanka. I had first tried it when I was in Mauritius for a SIDS (Small Island Developing States) conference and I decided that if I had to drink tea, that was it.

Then I had an experience that made me realise that tea as the only beverage in my cupboard was for Mother Hubbard and not for me. I was on my way to Guyana and my flight was delayed by several hours. The Barbados airport was so cold I swore that I saw Sir Grantley Adams reach for his overcoat.

I was freezing and needed a hot drink badly. I went to the refreshment booth in the departure lounge and asked the lady for a cup of hot water for which I was prepared to pay.

I explained that I had my own teabag. She told me that hot water without the tea bag was

the same price as hot water with the tea bag. An exchange ensued that was probably more heated than the water used to make the tea. I refused to surrender to what I considered extortion and went shivering back into the lounge asking myself, “Why?” I kept thinking that it was not the money but the principle, but I knew that it was the tea. Were I still a coffee drinker, I would not have got into such a pointless argument.

I would not have brooded and trouble would not have brewed.

Or if it had, it would be nothing that Juan Valdez could not have nipped in the bud, sprig or bean with a single drop of his dynamite drink. This was it and now, while I still buy and drink my vanilla tea, coffee remains my beverage of choice, especially from Jamaica or the Pomeroons in Guyana.

The tea versus coffee debate is one that will never end. The coffee drinkers will tell you that coffee is the only known aphrodisiac for middleaged men. The tea drinkers will retort that aphrodisiacs are no use to dead people or people

with hardening of the arteries.

We come up with names like Folger’s and Nescafe and they come up with names like Earl Grey and Darjeeling— one-upmanship and snobbery as an art form. When Prince Charles went to dinner at the White House, the president at the time, knowing the British love of tea, gave him hot water with a teabag. When asked after the dinner why he didn’t touch his tea, the Prince replied, “I didn’t know what to do with the little bag.”

It is like the story of the Rolls Royce driver who came alongside a brash American in his Cadillac. The man had dared to describe the SilverGhost as a “piece of junk”. “My good man,” the Rolls owner commenced, “do you have a car phone?" “What do you want it for?” the American taunted. “Do you want the number for the junkyard?” Then, when he saw the Rolls owner was serious, he replied, “Of course I have a car phone.” “Yes, but do you have a fax machine?” asked the Rolls owner. The American replied, “Yeah, yeah, I have that too.”

“But do you have a double bed in the back?” asked the Rolls owner. “I often nap when my chauffeur is driving,” the Rolls owner said condescendingly.

The American roared away and that afternoon had a mechanic install a double bed in his car.

A week later, the American passed the same Rolls Royce parked on the side of the road with its back windows fogged up and steam pouring out. The cocky American decided to gloat. He went to the Rolls and banged on the rear window. "I want you to know that I've had a double bed installed while your car is here at the side of the road waiting to be towed away.” The Rolls Royce owner rolled his window down and frowned at the American, “I say, old chap, you mean you got me out of a hot shower to tell me that?"

Education Minister: Common Entrance Exam Under Review

n July 1 officials from the Ministry of Education revealed the results of the 2019 Common Entrance Examination. Of the registered 2,993 students, 2,272 wrote the exam. The mean was the same as last year: 60.09%. Student scores ranged from 9% to 97%.

Although used for many years, the exam has been criticized for placing too much pressure on students at an early age. Last month the Barbados prime minister, Mia Mottley, announced her government’s intention to look into replacing the exam.

“We have reached the point where we need to reject an approach to education that was settled by the British in the 1940s,” she told supporters at a rally. Mottley said her government would begin the conversation about abolishing the exam, and the start of the creation of middle schools where students will decide, at ages 13 and 14, where they wish to continue their schooling. She lamented that there is inequity in the exam and that children should not be discarded at 11 and 12 years old.

On Monday Saint Lucia’s education minister, Dr. Gale Rigobert, spoke briefly on the government’s plan for the Common Entrance Exam, as well as other exams carried out at the primary school level, and the curriculum as a whole. “We are at this time reviewing the various exams that our students have to write, at grade 2, grade 4 and grade 6 in particular,” she declared. “I would not want to preempt the outcome of the exercise but it is something which is very much in the forefront of our minds and forms part of any discussion we have with respect to the way forward for the sector and our strategic alignment with the vision and mission for the sector.”

She added that the review will be comprehensive and hoped the outcome of the exercise will result in “a feasible prescription that can work for the benefit of all stakeholders”.

In grades 2 and 4, students write the Minimum Standards Exam, followed by the Common Entrance Exam in grade 6.

Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago both created their own replacements to the exam: the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) and the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) respectively. Whether the Saint Lucian government intends to do the same is unknown.

Another possible alternative is the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA). Developed by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), the assessment utilizes continuous assessment of students from grades 5 to

I once heard Sir Arthur Lewis at a UWI graduation ceremony telling his audience that primary education is the most important tool in preparing a child for tertiary education. Sir Arthur’s words are as relevant today.

It may take more than love and compassion to raise a majority of our children to a better understanding of mathematics and other subjects, but we owe a duty to every child to keep trying. Any disability discovered, should be viewed as a challenge to overcome.

It is my hope and prayer that the responsible authorities for the education of the nation’s children will be focused on discovering the reasons some children performed so poorly in these last exams. I have deliberately avoided suggesting any link between the above and crime, not wanting to detract from what we owe to those youngsters. Engineering and Maintenance Manager

We need to remind ourselves that the human brain is what determines how a person perceives and reacts to his or her environment. The brain controls the sense of sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch. Sometimes we speak loosely about children falling through the cracks, but what remedies are there to direct their thinking in a way that will avert the so-called cracks in the society? Why do some children misinterpret the ideas that are communicated to them at home and school? Is it due to undetected brain damage or what some call learning disability?

A learning disability in a child may be beyond some families. It bears repeating that the miserable performance of some students at the last Common Entrance Examinations must be seen as a problem of the society. We therefore need to be clear-eyed about finding solutions. We may need to channel children from a very early age into areas that excite them and in which they have displayed a propensity to learn.

Will SALCC ever transition to a University College?

ince the end of Ms. Olivia Saunders’ two-year tenure as principal of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) in January 2018, the island’s main tertiary institution has operated without a successor. Merle St. Clair currently serves as the Vice Principal. This week, education minister Gale Rigobert said her office should be in a position to announce a new principal “before the end of the month”.

Commenting on the long vacancy, she explained that SALCC is “at a very critical juncture at this point”, therefore fine-tuning of the recruitment process was important to the board and management “to ensure the best fit, especially at this time”.

Talk of a transition of the college into a university college has been ongoing for many years. Addressing this pertinent issue, Dr. Rigobert said that SALCC first needs to be a “very good college and any transition can only benefit from a strong foundation”. At this juncture,

she says, SALCC recognizes it has to be responsive to the needs of the labour market and must position itself to provide the skillsets and graduates who will be poised to capitalise on emerging opportunities.

She stated that for the last few weeks the curriculum, packaging of subjects and associate degrees available have all been under intense scrutiny. Rigobert said it will be determined whether these areas need revisiting to ensure that SALCC “remains relevant, is responsive to the needs of the current labour market, and can anticipate the skillset that will be required, given some of the

significant shifts in the global economy”.

Some of the shifts she cited are opportunities in areas such as robotics, digital media, and the green, blue and orange economy. Also, that students view SALCC as the preferred choice for their post-secondary education.

While Dr. Rigobert declared that there were “some exciting things” which will emerge shortly, exact details on a possible transition to a university college remain uncertain.

Last October Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies

(UWI), said that UWI had for 20 years tried to persuade successive governments here to let them develop SALCC into a university college. In a subsequent interview with Dr. Rigobert last year, the minister said that she had “productive preliminary meetings” with representatives from UWI.

This week she said: “The conversations that we continue to have with UWI include how we can strengthen or expand the two-year offering programme that we have here, for the Social Sciences programme out of St. Augustine; with respect to the Teacher Education Department, in particular, whether we can transition from what is currently being offered as an associate degree to a first degree offering in partnership with UWI; and that teacher education has been earmarked as a potential partner for the delivery of a masters programme in education.”

She said there are also conversations about whether a UWI partnership can expand access that is affordable and responds to the needs of students.

IS PIERRE’S OPPOSITION TO CABOT INVESTMENT BASED ON CONVENIENT CONJECTURE? Dean Nestor

T

he July 5 NIC statement on its investment in Cabot (St Lucia) Inc, released to “reassure all our stakeholders, in particular, our contributors, that the NIC at all times acts within the parameters of its Investment Policy and Guidelines which has been in effect since 2002,” was not nearly enough for House opposition leader Philip J Pierre.

On Tuesday he claimed somewhat hyperbolically: “The NIC exists solely for the purpose of financing the pipe-dreams of the prime minister and to help him to win the next general elections.” He added: “Why would anyone want to trust the NIC, when it operates in the dark?”

But the Corporation had clearly stated: “In respect of the particular investment in question, discussions and negotiations exceeded one year and the board gave its final approval only after all its concerns were addressed, the primary one being the security of the investment to be made.

The seemingly forgetful SLP leader was backed by the former Labour MP for Gros Islet, Emma Hippolyte. Earlier she had served as NIC Director.

While not directly questioning the qualifications of the current NIC directors, she seemed to accuse them of cowardice: “It is the spine they do not have to stand up and to analyse a project and to tell; whether it’s the prime minister who sends the person, to say this does not fit our Investment Policy.”

How exactly Hippolyte decided the investment does not fit the NIC’s Investment Policy is unclear. She openly acknowledged her lack of information, even as she seemed irresponsibly to berate lead NIC personnel: “A private investor coming into Saint Lucia, what appears to be . . . and we do not have the information so I’m going to say, appears to be a direct loan of millions of dollars . . . a new avenue for the NIC.”

The NIC, for its part, in citing its current Investment Policy and Guidelines, insists the Cabot investment is not in contravention of guidelines established since 2002 under a Labour government that

included the now opposition leader.

“The NIC should not participate in the equity of a start-up company,” notes the NIC. “However, the NIC can participate via fixed income instruments—loans, bonds— which should be appropriately secured and which would ordinarily have first claim on the company’s assets. The NIC can contribute to start-up equity of small hotels/concerns by contributing to a Venture Capital Fund or a Development Fund, an amount not exceeding 1.5% of the total portfolio at cost which would circumscribe the NIC’s exposure to that asset class.”

On Timothy Poleon’s Newsspin programme this week, the prime minister’s attache Norbert Williams added: “The NIC has clearly defined how its monies can be invested, what percentage of the monies go to government lending, to fixed deposits, to regional investments and to extraregional investments.

“The monthly deductions from members’ pay cheques can never fulfill the expectations and the payouts for pensions into the future.”

Williams said Cabot (St Lucia) Inc “invested a significant amount in this property when it purchased 375 acres from the

receivers”.

As the earlier quoted NIC press release noted, the Corporation “can contribute to start-up equity of small hotels/ concerns by contributing to a Venture Capital Fund or a Development Fund, an amount not exceeding 1.5% of the total portfolio.”

As Pierre himself pointed out on Tuesday: “The press release further states that the NIC obtained security ‘which is three and a half times NIC’s investment’.”

Still a dissatisfied doubting Pierre went on: “If Cabot has access to such sound security, why hasn’t Cabot been able to raise the finance it requires for the project from its own base in Canada where it is reputedly so successful?”

Meanwhile some are dismissing the opposition leader’s questions as “pointless” and “just more proof that they will do their utmost to discourage foreign inevestment in Saint Lucia while they remain in opposition”. A leading supporter of the government said: “None of this is new. Remember when Kenny Anthony publicly stated his intention to advise foreign contacts not to invest in Saint Lucia? He was, at the time, leader of the opposition.”

POLITICAL FOOLS?

n my politically active days I would have headed this letter “Political Jackasses”.

We hear much about high visitor arrivals to this island, as if those figures by themselves are financials which touch the lives of the people. What would make sense to the unemployed or to the man at Constitution Park is to see these arrivals patronizing the newly developed beach facilities at Soufriere; or supporting the farmers who produce fruits and vegetables. The connection between high visitor arrivals and increased income of taxi drivers, plus the further development of small hotels and restaurants, and the development of the much talked about village tourism and other

benefits should be foremost when reporting on visitor arrivals to the island.

Someone should tell those persons who seem to take much pleasure in mouthing merely tourism arrival numbers that the arguments of naysayers, who see the tourism industry as servitude instead of rendering professional service for pay, can be strengthened by such numbers. The process of educating a backward and negative mentality should never stop.

On a related matter, I was reminded this week of some ignorant and illiterate people who once had savings in the bank and would occasionally withdraw every cent to satisfy themselves that their monies were safe. Then they would immediately redeposit the money. Laugh if you want but what would it cost the NIC to explain as often as possible, how it invests the monies it collects to ensure there are always more funds than what the workers and employers pay

into it? Wouldn’t it make more sense for individual workers to ensure their employers are making regular deposits into their NIC accounts for them? And shouldn’t that be a private matter instead of the vulgarities from some mouths? In any event, wouldn’t it make more sense for protesters to form a company named TOBAC, and find a suitable hotel project that NIC could help them finance?

Oh, to have been a guest at the Monaco fete!

S aint Lucia’s new Carnival Queen Wenia Verneuil’s rendition of Aretha Franklin’s You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman truly took away the audience’s collective breath at last Friday’s event; but it will perhaps be most remembered for the contestants’ responses during the interview segment. The question that shook up the house: “A woman has just awoken after being asleep for 20 years. What do you tell her she has missed?”

“That’s a really good question,” said Verneuil, seemingly without a response. Six candidates before had only set off an explosion of audience laughter or dead silence. But Ms Verneuil had not stopped thinking. Finally, she said: “The world has improved drastically. The form of communication has developed quite a lot. People depend on social media a lot in this day and age.” Again the house blew up but this time with unrestrained applause.

Previous replies had ranged from “Although the world has evolved, the woman hasn’t missed a lot,” to “I would tell her she has missed absolutely nothing.” Small wonder Ms Verneuil scored the most points in the interview section.

This reporter was among those who considered her answer a gem. After all, social media has proved quite a phenomenon.

But the question never touched on significant occurrences that may have occurred while that imaginary woman enjoyed her big sleep. What if a contestant had offered this as her answer: “You missed some hot beach parties!” What if another had said: “You missed Donald Trump’s performances leading up to his election.” The truth is that the awakened sleepy head never

missed social media. Social media is still here for her to contribute to. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the rest. Unlke the election of America’s first black president, a phenomenon come and gone that may not be repeated for another hundred years, if at all!

So did the winner receive more praise than her response deserved? The obviously disappointed culture minister offered an excuse for the night’s non-answers: “I think the environment and the setting

threw them off. If the question were phrased differently, I’m sure they would have gotten it. They were clearly nervous and taken aback by the question.”

Will someone please hand Fortuna Belrose an award, for recognizing the problem was in the question?

By the way, why didn’t someone mention the Hollywoodstyle launching of our CIP? Then again, we all missed it. After all, our government chose to stage the extravaganza in Monaco—“where the money is!”

From Plantation to House Negro, still Slavery!

I

n the days of systemised slavery the “house nigger” considered himself superior to his slave brother who toiled in the field. He had arrived. His days of toiling in the harshest of conditions behind him, he could trade in his filthy rags for ill-fitting hand-me-downs from his master.

It mattered not that he or she was still the master’s property, to be returned to the field or sold for less than the price of a good workhorse.

Sad to say, not much has changed. Our society still comprises too many who represent the modern version of the house slave. With the smallest success, we quickly forget our roots; where we came from. We consider ourselves powerful, even though in reality what we have is a powerless power.

If we understand that we have been socially engineered for generations to fight over meaningless positions, we will understand why we continue to vote for autocratic, ineffective leaders and why our women are continually debased and assaulted at every turn.

Deny it all you want but the slave-master mindset is still deeply ingrained in our collective psyche. We show little respect for the leader or boss who listens and acts for the common good.

We save our adoration for the so-called “strong leader” who imposes his will on the people regardless of their aspirations. We point him out to our children as an exemplar worthy of emulation.

As he passes by with hardly a word to anyone, we imagine he cares for us, feels our pain, and we whisper: Sa se nom!

Mindlessly we perpetuate the myth of his power. We celebrate

his bravado, his bullying and machismo as indicators of his manhood and leadership qualities.

We identify with the oppressor and praise his every word and action in anticipation of some measly reward. We even turn on friends who say the emperor is naked. So much of the Kool Aid have we consumed that his reality has become our reality, regardless of what our own eyes might tell us. We are, in effect, his property, in time to be discarded like old shoes.

It is this colonial mindset and thirst for what we take for power that has led to what seems to be open season on Saint Lucian women. It’s so easy to cry out and express outrage at the news that a home has been broken into and its female occupant ravaged beyond belief. To cry out for vengeance when the latest rape victim is an 80- or 90-year-old does not take much. Demanding that the government of the day honours its promise to protect the populace is hardly ever done, for that might invite the wrath of a politician. And that risk most of us are not prepared to take. So again the slave in our DNA returns us to the plantation.

Consider the following: “Anytime I reach inside of the jam and I wining on a woman, that’s my property.” Let’s take another minute to examine the root of the quoted phrase.

Historically, black women did not have the right of consent.

Their bodies were not considered their own, so they were effectively in no position to determine who should have access to their bodies. She with her body existed for the pleasures of the slave master, the overseer—just about anyone could take whatever they wanted from her, whenever they wanted. There was nothing she could say or do to prevent it. You

could not rape a black woman because everyone knew “these oversexed whores want it all the time”. Forcefully penetrating the body of a black woman was just another way to assert your power and dominance over her. Is it any wonder so many rape allegations have been made against men with power, whether or not presumed?

In the face of this we continue to sing “Hurt It” and chuckle knowingly at other suggestive lyrics. But when someone actually “hurts it” we vilify them as brutes and heartless creatures. Thus continues the hypocrisy that feeds on the teats of ignorance and greed. We continue to complain halfheartedly, almost never demanding justice and accountability. When we do, such demands are short-lived.

We continue to pretend our ridiculous quest for impotent status is an invention of modern times when in fact it is a perpetuation of slave-plantation propaganda designed to keep us in our place. We deny our history while pretending we’ve risen far above our slave roots.

We choose not to see it is our history that renders us blind to what’s inches from our noses.

It is time to wake up and smell the coffee; time to wise up and put an end to the retarding hypocrisy. It is time to see the situation for what it really is. Just as we learned the “house nigger” was never an elevation, so too we must see presumed status for what it is. All the titles and imagined gold threads cannot help us if our minds remain stuck in the plantation mud whence came the vast majority of us. ast weekend the Indian community of Saint Lucia was pleased to host Arjun Jaipuri, a prominent Indian Ghazal singer, songwriter and musician.

On Saturday evening the artist performed at the Chugani residence, with a selection of songs that had the audience rapt with joy as they listened intently to the meaningful words; then, as the tempo increased, that had them dancing with delight. On Sunday evening the mood was more restrained for a devotional evening at the Karnani residence.

On both occasions the quality of musicianship was excellent, as would be expected from an artist who has performed globally and received many accolades and awards.

Mr Karnani encountered Arjun Jaipuri after seeing him on stage last year in Washington DC, in the United States. Inspired by the idea that live performances would be appreciated in Saint Lucia, Mr Karnani set in motion the process to bring the artist to our island, achieved with the support and financial aid of the community. If Only All Social Crickets Were Jou I

t is not enough for journalists to see themselves as mere messengers without understanding the hidden agendas of the message and the myth surrounding it.”

This gospel by the legendary Australian journalist and filmmaker John Pilger came back to me last Wednesday as I listened to a local pundit at work on the radio.

“When Rick was Rick,” I heard him say, “he wrote about matters that affected the country. Now he is the foremost promoter of Allen Chastanet and the United Workers Party.” A non sequitur, to be sure. Besides, I suspect the preacher’s tongue was on the recalled occasion buried deep in his cheek!

Nevertheless, a word or two on John Pilger: As far back as when I lived in the UK I had been attracted to his columns in the Daily Mirror. When I relocated to the States I acquired a few of his books, including one about the unreported horrors of the Vietnam war. More than anything I’d previously read, it convinced me that what I wanted to devote my life to was the author’s brand of literary journalism. (For media practitioners who may perchance require a definition: Literary journalism is a form of nonfiction that combines factual reporting with some of the narrative techniques and stylistic strategies traditionally associated with fiction. Which may explain why some works

that read like quality fiction are nothing but the truth!) In 1973 Tom Wolfe published The New Journalism and took the craft to another level. The book contains samples of work by Wolfe, Gay Talese, Hunter S. Thompson, Joan Didion, Truman Capote and Norman Mailer, among others.

The New Journalism became my New Testament. Once I’d laid hands on it, the “who, what, where, when” reverse triangle style of reporting that leaves no room for nuance and atmosphere and mood was never enough for me. The best examples of the form are to be found in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, as well as the UK’s more respected journals. I strongly recommend The New Journalism to local media practitioners. However, be warned that literary journalism by whatever name demands more than the 15word features so popular among Facebook’s literary community!

So now, back to Claudius Francis (who else?) and his not necessarily idiosyncratic—but on the recalled occasion most decidedly calculated—namecalling. The obvious truth is I am today as I’ve always been. That is to say, consistent, predictable jaundiced reactions be damned.

Rick has never been other than Rick and knows not how to be otherwise. His over-ambitious detractors, on the other hand, have always been imitative of food-chasing chameleons. As this species of lizard changes

its color in the name of survival, so do my detractors, depending on their filtered perception of how my truth could affect their position at the favor trough!

As far back as the mid70s, when I started working here as a journalist in the Voice editor’s chair, the frontliners of the main political parties had sought to attach labels to me.

I was either the best journalist since Murray Kempton or the worst since, well . . . better not name names, lest I drive oversensitive stridulating crickets into paroxysms of paranoia.

The truth in what I’ve written since returning to this Rock of Sages has seldom been determined on the basis of presented verifiable facts.

More often than not my words are read through filters red and yellow. So, on any given day I am at once the nation’s favorite son or, in the telling of one local sage, “the enemy within.”

Among my earliest powerhouse detractors— and that was even before I’d published a word in the Voice—was George Odlum who imagined his own publication, the Crusader, the model to be emulated. He resented the smallest suggestion of a contrary opinion. From his ostensibly apolitical platforms he accused the Voice publisher of importing “a muscleman to protect and defend him” against the Crusader’s literary arsenal.

left no doubt that he considered bodybuilding a perversion practiced only by the depraved and intellectually deprived. It didn’t help that the imported white American lady I was about to replace had for some time been a bosom buddy.

mole—sufficiently astute to know better than to fire back in defense of the source that sustained her, not to mention the politics of the paper of which she was the editor.

Ironically, not long after I took over from her, George started referring to my published contributions as “American

sensationalism.”

In typically dramatic fashion he chose one evening to elaborate from his platform outside then Columbus Square. “You know what it means to titillate?” he asked his audience, at the time ever ready to eat anything out his hand. “It means to “shatweeyah!” (Kwéyòl for “to tickle.”)

There is an inescapable irony attached to Claudius’ remembrance of “when Rick was Rick,” which coincided with that period when I was generally considered the major weapon in the Labour Party’s elections arsenal; when some went so far as to rename me “the scourge of Compton.” The references may be found in the

letter columns of the day’s Voice and in the Crusader.

The Herald, too. And Dennis D’Abreo’s One Caribbean. As for Claudius’ salted to taste recollection that when “Rick was Rick he wrote about matters affecting the country,” I can only speculate on what he may have alluded to.

Rochamel? Frenwell? The Helenites Affair? The Pusher in the House? The scandalous transfer of ownership of multimillion-dollar government property by Earl Huntley to a New York friend? Grynberg?

IMPACS? Somehow I doubt it, even though it is undeniable the cited features were all about “matters affecting the country.”

I cannot help wondering why some of the folks (and here I certainly do not include Claudius) insist on recommending to me the stories I should be covering in the nation’s best interests— especially when my unsolicited advisors take great pride in their local status as er, media practitioners, senior analysts without juniors. Surely they should be picking up wherever they perceive the slack.

I need not remind readers about my work that had earned me my “scourge of John Compton” award. Some of my articles of the period had actually resulted in ministerial resignations. Then there were my pieces about the nation’s elected lawmakers, all soidisant free-speech warriors, that more than once landed me in court.

I wish also to remind my piconging longtime friend that way before him there was the United Workers Party’s Henry Giraudy, who served not only as his party’s chairman (as did Claudius) but also as President of the Saint Lucia Senate (as did Claudius). Before I left the Voice to become John Compton’s first personal assistant (surprise surprise!)

Giraudy conveniently declared me the opposing party’s “PRO par excellence” (as did Claudius!) Evidently there really is nothing new under the sun.

Nor, for that matter, under the stars!

An Employee offers her Perspective on the OJO Labs Experience

ollective judgment of new ideas is so often wrong that it is arguable that progress depends on individuals being free to back their own judgment despite collective disapproval.”

The observation was by our own Sir Arthur Lewis, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Economics.

Certainly it coincides with the general opinion of our Saint Lucian community with regard to my place of employment: OJO Labs. Over my two years with the company, I have heard just about everything imaginable about my place of work: good, bad, ugly, mostly from people who’ve not taken the time to validate their statements. This is why I decided to share a bit of my own journey with OJO Labs from its inception.

OJO Labs interviewed hundreds of applicants in mid-2017 to be the first set of Artificial Intelligence Trainers in the Caribbean. Finally 31 employees, excluding IT and management, were hired. The first group of us was introduced to a new culture and new way of management from the very first day on the job. This is when I knew we were about to be part of something phenomenal. Our first months were filled with extensive training, laughter, games, the creation of bonds and a refreshing sense of belonging. We became a family; we exchanged cultures, lifestyles and interests.

That we were restricted to one room (our building was still in the finishing stages), forced us to grow even closer, in the process creating what would grow into a positive work environment and a foundation for those who were employed later.

It was different and exciting to be able to have one-on-one encounters and relationships with the owners and managers of our company. No segregation was visible there. Our VP of International Operations, Mr Jerry Franklin, has been instrumental from day one in ensuring we are comfortable in every way.

Our day would start with short motivational sessions that he or one of our other managers or team members led. The practice continues even as our company grows.

Over the past 22 months, I have observed the impact of OJO on employees. But how has OJO impacted my own life? At the time I attended the OJO Labs interview, I had been unemployed for three months, with a one-year-old child. I was frustrated. I needed to find something that would help me improve my living situation. To

be quite candid I pursued the job strictly as a means of paying the bills. My attitude changed within a few days of my coming on board. With all the motivation and encouragement I and my fellow employees received on a daily basis, the change was inevitable.

I felt I was being spoken to directly. It occurred to me how complacent I had been over the last 22 months. Now I consider myself focused, more mature and especially goal-oriented. I now spend my free time doing more productive, self-developing activities. No more TV bingeing for me. At OJO Labs everyone is afforded the opportunity to grow, thanks to workshops on leadership which not only helps to excel at OJO but also at any other place of employment and in whatever other field you may choose to work in.

Not only does OJO Labs provide a safe, comfortable work environment, the company knows what all work and no play can do. Our games room is well equipped, including a pool table, table tennis, an Xbox, Jenga and dominoes. Then there’s our lounge area, our state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen and canteen, where the staff is served healthy and delicious free meals. We have also reached out to many sick and shut-in individuals and provided them with some of the food items they need, all of which would be supplied by the management and staff of OJO Labs.

As the company continues to grow in Saint Lucia with our population of over 200 staff members, I am extremely honoured to be the one to share some of our experiences. I could go on and on but I think I’ve made my point. I trust you now have a better appreciation of the importance of OJO Labs, especially to the south of the island. OJO is one of the best things to have been introduced to Saint Lucia in a long time and, with the community at our side, there is no telling what doors could be opened in the future.

Team Rubis supports Literacy in Schools

wo hundred and thirteen students from Laborie Boys' and Fond St. Jacques Primary Schools recently celebrated Reading Month with Team Rubis and their sponsored auto-cross driver, Brian Evans.

Members of the Rubis team included Assistant Account Executive, Chriselda Norbal and Operations Assistant, Tamika Celestin.

During the first stop at Laborie Boys' Primary School, Mr. Evans read to students in Grade K and Grade 1 the popular children’s fairytale The Little Car that Could. Ms. Norbal explained that the story’s theme was one of encouragement and never giving up. She said, “The moral of the story resonated with the youngsters and encouraged them to believe in themselves at all times and in all situations."

There was another treat for all when young student Iaasac

Poleon, who holds the school’s most consistent reading record, demonstrated his reading skills to his schoolmates.

During the second school visit to Fond St. Jacques Primary School, poor weather prevented Team Rubis from hosting the reading session outdoors, as well as a demonstration of how the Rubis-sponsored Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI car works. Instead, the students were entertained

by Mr. Evans while he read the appropriately titled story The Race Car Champion, which was followed by questions from eager students about his champion driving skills and car.

The excited students at both schools were given branded exercise books and lunch bags from the Rubis team.

Team Rubis believes Reading Month to be an important annual event on the schools’ calendar as it promotes literacy.

Who Says Kiddies Carnival Is Fun? I armed myself with sunscreen and a cap against the midday sun. National Junior Carnival, better known as Kiddies Carnival, was set to start at 12:30pm from Derek Walcott Square. I followed a woman holding a child who had on a fluffy pink tutu sprinkled with roses, as she walked to join hundreds of other costumed children under the shelter of a massive tent in the square.

A half hour passed as I stood in the shade of the locally famous “Masav tree". Then action got underway. The Nous Wivay Junior Carnival Band was first to step out in their miniature madras pieces. The rest of the carnival tailed them in a splendid array of colours. The parade included toddlers and pre-teens.

The youngest reveller had not yet learned to walk. By Events Company of Saint Lucia’s count, “approximately 600” children participated.

I started taking pictures while adults were still bumping children into formation. They did their best to be heard above the over-amplified speakers mounted on trucks. The kids were encouraged to jump, march and dance to the blaring music. The younger ones I encountered were far more interested in getting their hands on some water or juice. The older ones, their sweating faces all glittered up, appeared miserable.

Finally the parade started moving at a snail’s pace toward The Sab, in Vigie, normally about a twenty-minute or so walk. I asked one mother whether she took her child to Kiddies Carnival every year. She obviously was proud to let me know she did because, to her, the kiddies’ carnival was a fun experience for the participants, an opportunity to learn about our culture. If she was correct about the lesson to be learned, the faces around her registered torture, not fun.

As the parade moved, the DJs pleaded with the parents to stay on the sidelines and allow their children to enjoy themselves. Alas, a few of the children clung to their parents, or screamed in protest at efforts to join the band.

Thankfully there were no

exposed gyrating derrieres, no alcohol and no grinding into the closest groin. Instead of thongs that encouraged the worst thoughts, and overflowing beaded bras, the children wore outfits made of cheap satin, Spandex, layers of tulle, and other nonbreathable opaque fabrics.

I do not doubt for a minute that Kiddies Carnival may well have its positive aspects. But why must it take place in conceivably the hottest spot in the city at the hottest time of year? Why must it involve so much walking?

Couldn’t the event have started with a parade around the Vigie playing field and ended on stage?

Understandably I had a difficult time getting the children to smile for my camera.

For what its worth, Gros Islet Junior Carnival Band, portraying “Something Fishy", emerged as Junior Band of the Year, followed

by Nous Wivay, Xtatic Kids and Royalties Extreme. The winning Junior Queen of the Band is Daniella Theophilus of Xtatic Kids.

Potential danger on the horizon!

ast October the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development published a list of 21 countries it believed operated Citizenship by Investment and Residency by Investment (CBI/RBI) programmes that “potentially pose a high risk". The inter-governmental organisation explained that potentially high-risk programmes are those that give access to a low personal income tax rate on offshore financial assets and do not require an individual to spend significant time in the specific location. Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Dominica and St Kitts & Nevis each operate CBI programmes and all made the list. The Bahamas, Montserrat and Barbados offer residency programmes and joined them.

From all indications, the region has settled on a unified approach to handle CBI/RBIrelated concerns. At the closing ceremony of the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting on 5 July, Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, the current CARICOM Chairman, was asked whether CBI/RBI was discussed during the two-day meeting. He said there weren’t any specific discussions, other than to note that Europe’s code of conduct group had indicated that they will be reviewing the region’s CBI and RBI programmes.

He said CARICOM members felt they should not wait for possible fall-out but, instead. should anticipate it.

“So there was a proposal put forward to jointly sponsor a review of our options and our strategy moving forward," said the chairman, "and there were certainly agreements on a lobbying campaign both in Europe and the United States of America.

So nothing specific to CIP, other than recognising that there is a potential danger on the horizon and we should try to anticipate that."

On June 18, the 67th meeting of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Authority was held, and Citizenship by Investment took centre stage. In a subsequently released communiqué, the OECS announced that the Authority

recommended that the Joint Regional Communications Centre (JRCC), the Commission and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank serve as an oversight committee to audit the operations of member states and make recommendations for improvements in the respective programmes. “Heads also noted the need to intensify efforts towards the standardisation of due diligence arrangements, application protocols and the sharing of information across countries, noting the consideration of a hybrid framework to allow flexibility amongst Member States,” said an OECS press release.

“Moon Head” Fatally Stabbed

n Thursday morning this week a 16-yearold female allegedly stabbed to death Marlie Williams (also known as “Moon Head”) of Gros Islet.

The incident reportedly occurred on Marina Street, a particularly distressed area. Residents claim Williams had been in an altercation with the female the previous day. The girl recently completed her last term in secondary school and it was unconfirmed whether she graduated.

Williams celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday this week. He was

unemployed but residents say that he was dedicated to his family. Neighbours old and young have described him as a genial individual. “He always stopped to greet me, no matter what,” reminisced one elderly woman. “I hope this doesn’t cause some kind of war in the area; he had a lot of friends.”

Via TV, constituency representative Lenard Montoute urged community members to play their part in curbing youth violence.

At press time the police had issued no statement on the homicide.

Marlie Williams died at 26 years of age.

Muscle Injuries Explained

E

verywhere we turn we are told to exercise; but as beneficial as is exercise, keeping fit is not without its perils. Whether you exercise for fun or play competitive sports such as football, golf, cricket, hockey or track and field, you may experience many types of injury, muscle injuries being among the most common. In fact, you don’t even have to play sport to get a muscle injury.

By the time you have read this article you will realise that not all muscle injuries are equal, and recovery will depend on the severity of the injury, your overall health and the steps you take towards your recovery.

An injury can be described as physical harm or damage to someone’s body caused by an accident or attack. So what exactly is a muscle injury?

Muscle injuries can either be acute, injured through trauma, or chronic, overuse or failure of an acute injury to repair sufficiently. Below is an

overview of the most common types of muscle injury and the best management to ensure recovery and return to function.

Muscle strains should not be confused with sprains. A sprain describes overstretching of ligaments (fibres that attach to bones to aid stability) whereas strains occur when excessive mechanical stress is applied to muscles and tendons, e.g. overstretching or performing excessive repeated movements, causing damage or tears to the muscle fibres.

The most common causes of a sprain are improper use of a muscle, fatigue or overuse.

Although this type of injury can happen spontaneously, it is not uncommon for sprains to result from minor injuries to the muscle that build up over time, rendering the muscle weak and vulnerable. Sprains therefore can be seen in sports that involve running and jumping and are usually categorised depending on the severity of

the severity of the injury but involves repair of the damaged tissue by laying down a random network of fibres, better known as scar tissue. Initially these fibres are weak and any mechanical force to the area can cause the fibres to tear.

This is why it is extremely important to rest after an injury, although rest does not mean sitting down and doing nothing. During the rest period it is important to perform gentle mobilisation exercises to improve blood flow to the area and better formation of scar tissue.

After this initial period of the healing process the fibres are now strong; in fact they may have more strength than surrounding tissue so failure to fully rehabilitate the injury may result in injuries to the area around the newly formed scar. In order to ensure that all fibres operate under optimum conditions it is important to undergo a programme of rehabilitation which focuses on stretching, strengthening and proprioception exercises.

have often been asked if Yoga can help relieve hip pain.

The answer is yes. If one is disciplined and can attend a minimum of two Yoga classes per week, then Yoga can help.

There are a number of reasons why hip pain occurs. Commonly, when the cartilage—which creates a cushion between the hip joint and the femur bone—becomes worn, you could have bone rubbing against bone, and this can create arthritis or rheumatism and inflammation in that area, which can be painful. Bursitis, tendonitis, strain of the tendons or muscles, and hip fractures can all create hip pain.

Allow me to tell you a personal story. Several years ago I began feeling as though I needed to stretch in order to release something in the area of the groin. It wasn’t pain but it felt like the bone was caught on something and wouldn’t release. I stretched in every angle and direction that I could but, no matter what I did, nothing happened.

As time went on I began to feel pain, to the point that some days I had difficulty walking and, after a while, I began limping. When I woke up in the morning I would sometimes step onto the floor from my bed and my leg wouldn’t hold my weight. Many times, as I walked along, my leg would just give out and not support me.

It became so painful that I saw a doctor, had an x-ray and was diagnosed with a worn hip joint from over-activity. I went to see a hip specialist who told me that he would normally recommend a hip replacement but he considered me too young for the procedure.

I knew that I had to do something so I went to my Yoga teachers. They showed me how to work to strengthen the area around the hip—the muscles, tendons and ligaments. In many instances with hip issues, the groin becomes tight and painful, and must be kept open and flexible. Pain on the inner thigh and outer shin is felt much of the time during the night while trying to sleep. Pain can also be experienced in the knees.

I had tried to lessen the pain, which was in my right hip, by walking a little crooked to reduce the weight on it, but this created pain on the opposite side of the body, at the lower back area. I learned that when we try to stay away from pain, often it will only get worse. We must respect it and learn from it.

I had to change my practice to be more focused on specific areas of the hip.

I learned that every morning, faithfully, I had to practice Yoga postures that worked on my hip and groin area. Every day, in spite of pain, I would practice Yoga, focus and try to pinpoint from where the pain was coming. Eventually I felt that my hip was becoming stronger.

I can now do things that, for a few years, I was limited in doing.

I now walk without pain and know what the daily routine must be in order to maintain this freedom. So I strongly suggest to those experiencing pain to take a couple of hours a week to learn about the body, and become more aware of how it works and what you can do to feel better.

Most people who faithfully continue a Yoga practice find that much of the pain they experience lessens, or even goes away, to the extent that they no longer require pain medication. Heal the body and heal the mind!

With my daily Yoga practice I continue to work to strengthen my body. It makes me reflect on the adages “Know thyself” and ‘Heal thyself”. It has definitely worked for me!

My experience of pain has brought me a benefit; I believe that it has made me a better Yoga teacher because now I understand how to work with people who have the same issues that I went through.

Iyengar Yoga is a therapeutic Yoga which continually works to bring alignment and balance to the body and the mind, and to heal the student in many ways in every class that they experience.

n Sunday, July 7, 2019, at approximately 5:31am, Weston Moses organised his kayak on the beach of Smuggler’s Cove, next to Cap Maison Resort, to depart on a trek to Martinique. The feat is a 21 mile/33 kilometre paddle from the beach in Saint Lucia to the Grande Anse area of Martinique.

Moses, originally from the USA and now residing in Dominica, has been an avid watersports fan for decades.

Residing in the Caribbean for two decades, he has trained others around the region in kayaking, offering tours as well as guidance in Jamaica and Saint Lucia prior to moving to Soufriere, Dominica. He was inspired through the St Lucia Channel Swim event organised annually for swimmers to attempt crossing the channel.

Moses might be recognized most from pictures on the water with Molly Nance, the first documented female to swim from Saint Lucia to Martinique, in May 2018. As her support kayak, Moses tried to assist Nance with feedings and direction, but found it

difficult at a swimmer’s pace in the average 15 mph winds of the channel. This inspired Moses to train towards making the crossing via kayak.

Arranged as part of the St Lucia Channel Swim event, safety and support was provided to Moses while he paddled from one island to the next.

Leaving with the swimmers at 5:31 am, Moses quickly set off and followed a tracked course via GPS. He arrived on the shores of Martinique, close to Anse Meunier beach, at approximately 12:30pm.

Moses indicated that although he had estimated five to six hours to paddle across, he was pleased with his time and performance. He added that, at times, the directional change of the current made it more difficult than he had imagined.

What’s next on his agenda? Moses will be training for a possible relay swimming attempt across the same channel. He is currently planning an open water event in Scott’s Head Bay, Dominica, to continue to open the avenues for various watersports in the region.

ast weekend the Saint Lucia National Female Rugby 7s team participated in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Rugby 7s Olympic qualifier in the Cayman Islands.

Saint Lucia played three games on the first day, losing against Mexico 17-5 and Jamaica 20-5 but vanquishing Trinidad and Tobago 5-17.

On the second day Saint Lucia fared better, beating Bermuda 0-27 and Bahamas 0-19. Saint Lucia then impressed all spectators by beating Trinidad and Tobago in the third place final, 22-0, proving that their Saturday win wasn’t a fluke.

Number 10 Renetta Fredericks and speedster Mary “Lamborghini” Roberts stood out in the crowd.

Fredericks was electric with her devastating runs, and Roberts lived up to her nickname with line-break after line-break slicing through the defence at will. Roberts scored 11 tries (55 points) during the tournament and was Saint Lucia’s highest

St Vincent first, St Lucia second at Women’s Football Tournament

renada did not successfully defend their Windward Islands Women’s Football title, but instead delivered a death blow to the Saint Lucia team who were on the verge of winning the title.

Last Saturday was the final day of the three-day tournament which took place at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground (DSCG), with Saint Lucia needing a win or tie to claim the championship. However,

St Lucia Football Association Inc official Emmanuel Bellas presented the St Vincent and the Grenadines Captain with the Windward Islands Women’s Football Championship trophy.

Grenada, with nothing to lose, were footloose and fancy-free, and shut out Saint Lucia in a crucial game 2-0. It was a heartbreaker for the Saint Lucia team and their fans, who felt the championship was well within their grasp.

Grenada relished their role as spoilers. In an interview following the match, their Captain, Grace John, although disappointed Grenada did not defend their title, was pleased that the team ended the tournament on a high note.

In the final analysis, Saint

Lucia finished with two wins and one loss, having defeated St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and Dominica for second place. SVG, who defeated Dominica 4-0 prior to the Saint Lucia vs Grenada game, came away with the title.

In the first game of the double header on Saturday, SVG came out firing on all cylinders to register an enthralling 4-0 victory over a hapless Dominica team. The victory saw them being crowned Champions of the Tournament.

SVG, who accumulated

three points from two matches in comparison to Saint Lucia with six points, also from two matches, knew their only hope of securing the championship was to ensure a massive victory against their opponents, which they did in grand style.

SVG began the game in attacking mode and surged ahead in the 11th minute with a goal by Ericka Hooper. Before the dust could settle, it was 2-0 as Hooper completed a brace in the 45th minute to signal the end of the first half.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Dominica team mounting some form of resistance which was negated by the determination of the Vincentians. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the 77th minute with a goal by Chryslin

Brown. With all eyes firmly set on the championship, Brown completed her brace in the 85th minute to place SVG firmly in the driver’s seat with a comprehensive and exciting 4-0 victory.

Saint Lucia, having witnessed the stunning display by team SVG, knew that they had to pull out all the stops to defeat defending champions Grenada in order to secure the title. On the other hand, the Grenadians entered their final fixture determined to redeem themselves in this tournament.

In an all-out attack from the opening whistle, they surged into the lead with a goal by Carena Noel in the 5th minute of play. Despite Saint Lucia’s attempt at gaining the equalizer, Grenada extended their lead

with a Shaniah Johnson goal in the 25th minute. No further goals were scored and the half ended 2-0.

The resumption saw team Saint Lucia fighting desperately to get on the score sheet. However, a determined Grenada team wouldn’t allow them and, despite the pendulum swinging back and forth, Grenada clung on to their 2-0 advantage.

When the final whistle sounded, it was a disappointed Saint Lucia team settling for second place, up one notch from their performance in 2018.

Following the completion of the tournament, the following awards were presented: Best Defender, Zeanna Charles (SVG); Best Midfielder, Merissa Charles (Grenada); Best Goalkeeper, Atticia Benn (SVG); MVP of the Tournament, Atticia Benn (SVG).

Double football title for Northern United All Stars

orthern United All Stars created history, having been crowned champions of the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Inc Under 13 Football championship last Saturday at the La Clery Playing Field. They had previously won the Under 11 Tournament.

The finals, played between Northern and Flow Lancers, which was a repeat of the SLFA’s Northern Zone Final, lived up to all the hype and expectations. Flow Lancers, determined to make amends for

their previous 2–1 defeat, bolted out of the blocks and soon gained the ascendancy with a Venroy Alfred goal in the 34th minute. As the game ensued, Northern strove desperately for the equalizer, which was not forthcoming, and the half ended 1–0.

The second half was a different ball game as Northern gradually got into their own with Lyndon Alcindor levelling the score in the 50th minute.

From that point on, patrons were treated to a fine display of attacking football from both teams, resulting in Northern

extending their lead in the 70th minute with a goal by Giovanni Esper.

Try as they might, Lancers were unable to register the equalizer, giving Northern victory by the identical margin 2–1, to be crowned champions of the Saint Lucia Football Association Inc Under 13 Football competition.

In the third place play-off, Black Panthers got the better of a depleted Uptown Team, winning 13–1. Their goals were scored by Eulyanie Butcher in the 4th, 8th, 36th, 48th and 54th minutes, Cy Alcindor in the 27th, 30th, 44th and 51st minutes, L Pierre in the 4th and 10th minutes and T Joseph in the 42nd and 57th minutes.
