Brother Goose are one of the city’s newest and exciting bands. SouthSCENE saw them kick off the Ejector Seat Festival back in June and we instantly liked what we heard. Formed in early 2012, the band cook up a stir fry of Indie rock, quirky folk and synth pop but thank-
O
fully without becoming overly eccentric for the sake of it. Think Arcade Fire playing twister with The Smiths and a hint of further influences including the Delays, Vampire Weekend and Mystery Jets and you’d be on the right wavelength, although we suspect this is a band that will continue to evolve just as you think you’ve got them sussed. Despite being relative newcomers to the local Southampton music scene, the band has already been invited to support local legends, the Delays and also Pale Seas and Theme Park. In April they headlined The Joiners Arms to release their rather marvellous debut record, the Throwing Shapes E.P. They return to the newly crowned ‘NME Best Small Venue’ on the 13th July with support from Josh Betteridge and the equally excellent rising stars The Outlooks. The UK’s biggest search for unsigned acts is back! Having seen more than 9,000 entrants to 2012’s competition, Open Mic UK has announced that the 2013 audition dates will commence from August! COULD YOU BE THE NEXT BIRDY, JAHMENE DOUGLAS OR LUCY SPRAGGAN? Auditions will be held at 15 locations across the UK, including Ferneham Hall, near Southampton, as they try to find the country’s best singers, song-writers, rappers and vocalists. Successful acts are chosen to perform at some of the UK’s most prestigious live music venues, in front of a panel of industry professionals and packed audiences, at the live regional finals. The most talented acts will then progress to the Grand Final within the O2 in London. Presented by Future Music - the company behind the development of artists such as Warner Music’s Birdy, Sony Music’s Jahmene Douglas and Columbia Record’s Lucy Spraggan, whose debut album is due for release later this year.

With recent judging panels having included industry specialists and the likes of Radio DJ’s Annie Nightingale and Ras Kwame, Kiss FM’s Charlie Hedges and Ivor Novello Award Winner Mark Hill, Open Mic UK has grown to become a serious contender for sourcing real talent with winners that can be developed organically over time, in the right way for the artist. Events coordinator, and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston said “Every year we hold this competition, the quality gets higher and higher. For promising singers, songwriters, rappers and vocalists, Open Mic UK provides a real opportunity to showcase their talent to music industry professionals and audiences across the country” THE UK’S BIGGEST SEARCH fOR UNSIGNED ACTS Open Mic UK will discover the acts that have the ability to become professional recording artists - prizes for winners include cash, studio time and development classes worth £50,000. For full details of audition dates, venues, age categories and more, visit www. openmicuk.co.uk
