HAYLEY HERZOG
Summit Christian College What is one specific leadership trait you acquired, developed or improved on by participating in the Leadership Scotts Bluff program? I think simply becoming more involved is one leadership trait I have improved on by participating in Leadership Scotts Bluff. As someone new to this community, it was hard at first to know what organizations are available and what each organization does. After going through LSB, I am now more aware of all the different opportunities Scotts Bluff County has. This has helped me take the next step to meet new people and take action. Even if I don’t join every single organization, I’m now aware they exist and I can help others find an organization that fits their passion and interest. What benefit is your community going to receive from you attending this leadership program? Because I’ve had an opportunity to learn more about our local organizations, I plan on joining and participating in many projects that will help make our community a better place. What tips or advice on leadership would you give to an emerging leader? I would advise anyone who hasn’t yet joined LSB to do so because it truly opens your eyes to so much more in this county than you could have expected. Be informed – LSB teaches us about our local agriculture, our history, the problems our law enforcement faces and more, which has helped me to better understand each sector within our valley. Describe a leader using three adjectives or phrases. A good leader would be confident, creative and persistent in their efforts. Advertising Specialties, Ink What is one specific leadership trait you acquired developed or improved on by participating in the Leadership Scotts Bluff program? Bravery — I struggle with the tendency to be my own worst enemy by second guessing decisions and/or over thinking situations. Improving on the ability to get out of my own way and run with my gut instinct has opened a lot of new opportunities for me. Sometimes you have to be willing to ask for forgiveness versus permission. What benefit is your community going to receive from you attending this leadership program? I believe the community will benefit from my participation in this program because I don’t “sit on the sidelines.” I jump into my career, my children’s schools and sports, friendships, personal groups of interest with both feet and understand the importance of giving back. Volunteering is invaluable to both the person and the organization they serve. I look forward to expanding my past experiences and finding a personal leadership role within the Scottsbluff community. City of Gering Police Department What is one specific leadership trait you acquired, developed or improved on by participating in the Leadership Scotts Bluff program? I believe that the trait that I improved on with Leadership Scottsbluff, is teamwork. I have worked on teams before; however I feel that the learning about the differing personalities and how to work with them has seen the most improvement. What benefit is your community going to receive from you attending this leadership program? I think that the leadership program has helped me identify the differing services that are available in the community. In my job, I have to refer a lot of people to other places so they can get the help that they need. I had a basic understanding of a lot of the services in the community, but I am not aware of quite a few more. What tips or advice on leadership would you give to an emerging leader? I am not a big fan of micromanagement. I would tell an emerging leader is to make sure that when they are leading people to give the people a direction and the authority to complete the task and then let them do it. This builds confidence in both the subordinate and the leader when they see what can be accomplished by the worker. Describe a leader using three adjectives or phrases. Charismatic, confident, and adaptable. Chose one leader (present or past) that you would have lunch with if the opportunity arose? If could have lunch with a leader I would choose. Richard Meyers. I met him once in Colorado. At that time he was the newly hired Chief of Police for Colorado Springs. Following the George Zimmerman trial, he went to work as interim chief for the Sanford Florida Police Department to help with racial tension between the department and the community.

Leadership class, board speak highly of program By IRENE NORTH Staff Reporter The Leadership Scotts Bluff program has wrapped up another successful year, teaching about all the valuable programs, volunteer oppor t un it ies a nd businesses in the community. Class XXVI graduates with a new appreciation for the community and everyone who works ha rd to ma ke t hings bet ter. Class and board members speak positively about the things they learned and why they joined, and remain with, the program. Hayley Herzog moved to town shortly before the new program began. She had read about Kearney’s program while working on the copy desk in college. When she came to town, former LSB student Dave Parrish recommended it. “I knew I wanted to be in some sort of leadership program,” she said. “It was an easy choice.” Herzog expected networking, never thought she would learn so much about the community. “I would have never learned about Kelley Bean or the farmers in the area,” she said. “It’s nice to make those connections with people who make Scottsbluff and Gering what it is.” Herzog said she pushed outside her comfort zone, which was challenging, but positive. One of her favorite classes during the year was Law Enforcement Day. “I loved the law enforcement day, touring the jail, learning from troopers,” she said. “I also enjoyed talking to our senators and asking our own questions and getting an answer straight from them.” Don Osborn joined this year’s class bec ause his boss suggested it. What he discovered was Scottsbluff has a wealth of community support just under the surface. “It’s run in large part by the grace of volunteers and/or underpaid staff who do what they do more for love rather than money,” he said. “I’ve learned that it’s no longer the Norman Rockwell painting of my childhood memory, but instead a community facing (and dealing with) all the issues of modern society.” Tor y S chwa r t z joined L SB

because he felt even though he was from the area, there was still a lot to learn from the program from the many good things he had heard from other graduates. “I learned about some of the challenges our cit y/count y/ state governments are facing c u r rent ly a nd how t hey a re work ing towa rd t he f ut ure,” he said. “I also learned about some of the societal challenges that our local law enforcement agencies face and the severity of them.” Schwartz said he will use this knowledge to benefit the community. “I am more knowledgeable about more of our local resources which will come in handy when dealing with those that can use these programs,” he said. Crystal Schleicher said she was involved with organizations in Scotts Bluff County until she left for college. She looked at LSB as an opportunity to reconnect, network, meet community leaders and find ways to use her talents to the benefit of other organizations. “I would like to be able to offer groups or organizations unique skills I’ve learned through the
advancement of my education,” she said. “Even though Scotts Bluff County is small, we have a lot of amazing talent that when we work together we can produce great projects, such as very successful Hoops for Heroes.” L SB Board member George Schlothauer said LSB is a great opportunity for anyone living in the county. T here a re so ma ny t hings in t he com munit y,” he sa id. “People have lived here all their lives and don’t know the diverse things in the community.” Doug Mader said he likes being on the LSB board because he gets the chance to learn something new every year. “I get to learn and meet 20 new people every year. I’m up to 80 people now,” he said. “It’s important for the community. Creating a program for the community as well-sponsored and supported as L eadership Scotts Bluf f is impressive.” LSB board member Summer Parker enjoys networking and getting to meet other members of the community. “It’s an opportunity to influence and help people learn about the community,” she said.

Summer also enjoyed her time as a class member as well. “It helped me learn where I wanted to volunteer,” she said. “I enjoy LSB because it’s a great avenue to get involved.” Osborn said he was pleased w ith the connections he has made who have the “lights on” and will use those connections
t o be a p a r t of t he c om mu nity as a participant, in the game and not just on the sidelines. Schwartz also sees the benefit in making new connections. “ I m e t m a ny ne w p e op l e , which always helps to bring local agencies/organizations closer together for the betterment of our communities,” he said.
