And now, a word from the President Welcome to the Expedition League’s and the Western Nebraska Pioneers’ 2020 season! We’re thrilled to be here for our wonderful fans this season. We have navigated uncharted waters and worked very hard day and night to bring baseball and FUN to you, the great Pioneers fans, this season. We are blessed to play a 2020 52-game season over 55 days with Opening Day on June 26th and the last day of the regular season on August 19th! Each of the first two seasons of the Western Nebraska Pioneers have been a huge success with over 30,000 fans in attendance at beautiful Oregon Trail Park Stadium in both 2018 and 2019. League-wide, the ten Expedition League teams drew nearly 200,000 fans in the 2019 season. We’re thrilled about the future of the Expedition League and the Pioneers! The Pioneers brought home the Expedition League Championship in the League’s inaugural 2018 season and were in the League Championship Series again in 2019. It was a hard fought, exciting LCS in 2019 and very, very exciting for the great Western Nebraska fans. The Expedition League and the Pioneers are all about fun and the fan experience! Chuck and Mayra Heeman will once again work tirelessly to offer an incredible fan first experience for you at the ballpark. From the game itself to the between inning fan interactive activities to incredible in-game acts, it will truly be an awesome, fun-filled 2020 season at Oregon Trail Park Stadium. I want to personally thank all of you, the incredible Pioneers fans, host families and corporate partners for being a part of Pioneers Nation! Thank you to the City of Gering as well for the tremendous partnership with the Expedition League and the Western Nebraska Pioneers. You have worked diligently with us to help ensure Pioneers baseball and FUN in 2020 in your awesome city. We couldn’t do it without all of you and all of us at the League and the Pioneers will continue to work very, very hard to entertain you and to give you a FUN, fan-friendly experience at the ballpark. We made it!
Welcome to the 2020 season! A message from Mayra & Chuck
Well, it has certainly been an interesting off-season for the Pioneers and the community! We’ve all seen so many changes in our lives, our families and our businesses; the way we do things, interact with each other, the way we communicate – so many things we’ve adapted to during these last few months. As the Pioneers, as with so many of us, our world was turned upside down when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. We immediately changed from worrying about what kind of hot dogs we would serve to concern about our families, our staff, fans, host families and partners and our community. From being on lockdown to slowly sticking our heads out and seeing each other again, we all changed our way of life. So many things were uncertain for the Pioneers and the Expedition League. Would we be able to play at all? Which teams could play, which would have to sit out the season? If we could play, what did we need to do to assure the safety of all members of the Pioneers family? We've all learned far more than we ever thought about pandemics, social distancing, Unified Commands, six-foot rules, masks – things we couldn’t have even dreamed up, we had to implement in order to bring you Pioneers baseball this summer. In learning how to deal with the guidelines, we’ve actually found some things that may become permanent fixtures at Oregon Trail Park Stadium. This year, in spreading people out, the City of Gering has installed additional seating in the left field grass area – the Coca-Cola Frontier. If fans like it, we’ll keep it! Also, our friends at Coca-Cola have supplied a concessions trailer to spread out our food service operation. We’ve implemented the FanFood app, where you can order food from your mobile device and pick it up, eliminating line time and helping with social distance guidelines. Our fans have been incredibly patient and understanding throughout this process, as we had to totally re-work the entire season. From a May 26 start to a month delay, from changing the schedule, to completely re-inventing the way we operate at the ballpark – we thank you all for understanding and we know you share our concern for each other. The Expedition League is one of the few summer collegiate leagues operating this year, and we are happy to be here for you. Our players are ready to go, the hot dogs are hot, the drinks are cold, and we’re off on our 2020 season. We thank you so much for being a part of the Pioneers family!

We don't need no stinkin' COVID! As with all of us in Western Nebraska, the Pioneers faced a number of challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic as it overwhelmed America this spring. The uncertainty for all of us made planning the 2020 season a challenge in many ways. While small businesses throughout the area closed their doors or limited their ability to serve the community, the Pioneers, as a small, familyowned business, faced the same. We closed our offices and hunkered down at home, working remotely to work on the hundreds of pieces that come together to put a season of Pios baseball together. As the pandemic worked through the United States, unanswered questions piled on top of more unanswered questions – when will we be cleared to safely bring players, coaches and interns to town? When will we be allowed to bring fans to Pios games? Will our great host families accept people coming in from other areas of the country? So many questions came from all angles as the season’s start came quickly our way. Many discussions with League, City and American Legion baseball officials throughout the Expedition League’s 10 markets were ongoing. Four EL teams were forced to sit out the 2020 season but all will be back strong in 2021. The entire situation needed to be determined under the umbrella of safety – in no case would we allow our people to be put in a situation where it wasn’t safe, just to play some ballgames. Fortunately, with the help of many parties keeping us accurately informed, the Expedition League formed an alternate schedule and the path became clearer as the season approached. With that adapted schedule, and with expert advice and guidance from the City of Gering, Unified Command and the State of Nebraska, we combined to come up with plans to host you this summer. Plans will adapt as guidelines change, and we will always do our best to take care of you! We thank you for your support of the Pioneers and we’re all very happy to have baseball this summer!
