Aiming for the top

The Scottsbluff High School boys golf team is swinging into action this spring with another lofty goal of winning a second Class B state championship in three years. Plenty of experience and talent return to this season’s team. Pictured (from front to back) are Koy Potthoff, Sean Mercer-Smith, Bailey Hort, Craig Smith, Jonah Wright, and Jared Pilkington. Potthoff, Mercer-Smith, Wright, and Pilkington all were members of last year’s team that finished third at state.

One single stroke. That’s how close the Scottsbluff boys golf team came from a playoff in an attempt to repeat as Class B state champions last May. Eight strokes out of the lead following the first round of the state tournament, the Bearcats carded an event-low 301 on the f inal day to charge back into contention. But McCook and Beatrice both edged out Scottsbluff by a shot to force a playoff, which was won by the Bison. The Bearcats settled for a third-place finish. “At the state tournament last year they really sucked it up that
last day and played hard,” Scottsbluff coach Mike Klein said. “I think that gave them a lot of confidence that they could do that in a situation like that.” With four golfers back from that squad, this year’s Bearcats are hoping to be back in a familiar position Klein of competing for another state championship this spring. Not only does Scottsbluff have the experience to make another run at the top, Klein said his squad is much improved over last year’s team. “If these guys play like they’re
Scottsbluff senior Koy Potthoff returns for his fourth season on the Bearcat varsity this spring. Potthoff, who was named the Star-Herald’s All-Region Golfer of the Year in 2014, won five tournaments last year and sported a region-low scoring average of 74.9. Photo by JEREMY WOZNICK/ Star-Herald

GOLF: Scottsbluff boys loaded for another run at a Class B state championship Continued from page 1 capable of playing, we’re going to be pretty tough, said Klein, who was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame this past fall. “It might take a little while to get going this year, but hopefully by May we’ll be hitting on all cylinders. Returning from last year’s squad are seniors Koy Potthoff and Sean Mercer-Smith, along with juniors Jonah Wright and Jared Pilkington. Potthoff, who was named the Star-Herald’s A ll-Region Golfer of the Year last season, is in his fourth year on varsity. He won five tournament titles last year and sported a region-best 74.9 scoring average with a season-low round of 71. Potthoff tied for 13th at state last year. “He’s spent some serious time at it, Klein said of Potthoff. “He looks pretty good so far from what little I’ve seen of him in practice. Wright is in his third season on varsit y, while Mercer-Smith and Pilkington are both in their second. Wright and Mercer-Smith both shot season-low rounds of 75 a year ago. Pilkington’s low round was a 76. “Jonah played quite a bit this summer and Sean has played a lot early. Jared played all summer and all fall, Klein said. “It’s awesome having those four back. They’re fun kids. Junior Craig Smith also returns as a letter winner from last season. Smith’s low round last year was an 88. As if the Bearcats needed any extra help, they received it when senior Bailey Hort joined the team

will be nice having districts closer to home this year. “I like that, he said. “You can just get up in the morning and drive down there. Most of the kids like it. This year’s Class B state tournament will be held at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island. Similar to the Scotts Bluff Country Club, Riverside is a tight, tree-lined course that requires plenty of pinpoint accuracy. The Scottsbluff girls won multiple state titles on it in recent years. Scottsbluff can expect a tough challenge at state from Beatrice. T he Orangemen return four of their five players from last year’s roster. Klein is in his fourth year coaching the Bearcat boys. He’s been the Scottsbluff girls golf coach for the last 12 years and also spent many years as the Mitchell boys coach. In total, Klein’s teams have Photo by JEREMY WOZNICK/Star-Herald won 10 state championships. The most recent came in October when Scottsbluff’s Sean Mercer-Smith putts during the Scottsbluff the Bearcat girls repeated as state Invitational last year. Mercer-Smith, a senior, is in his second season on the Bearcats’ varsity. champs.

As of right now, we have 20 student athletes on our team. Each one of these kids works hard and is a lot of fun to work with. Each coach brings in a lot of experience and is willing and is able to work together to help the team reach its full potential. “As a team, we look to improve each individual athlete’s performance throughout the season. Team goals: “Focusing on the fundamentals and competing at a higher level,” Behnke said. Last year’s highlights:
“Our team finishing fifth and Zoe Holscher finishing second at GNAC,” Behnke said. “Our dual record and watching Christina Villarreal transition into a competitive No. 2 singles player after finishing the previous season with only two wins. But ultimately, watching our team develop into strong tennis players is always the highlight for us as coaches.” Coach note: “I would just like to publicly thank Rich Peterson and Nate Lewis for their years of dedication to the Scottsbluff tennis program,” Behnke said. “Rich moved in January to be closer to family and Nate will soon be leaving as well. Without them I would not still be coaching and I would not have the fundamentally sound team that I have. They stuck with me and I am forever indebted to them for their generosity and time that they gave the girls and boys tennis programs.” Former players currently competing in college: Madeline Holscher, Unive r s i t y o f N e b r a s k a Omaha
gr ad u ate d s o m e to p talent last year in leading goal scorer Anthony Parra and defensive organizer Blake Wills. This year we may lack some of the speed and power we had last year, but can make up for it with players that are ver y good technically,” Coach Rock said. “The defensive line will be young, but Matt Mickey is experienced in goal which should help while the underclassmen learn. The spine of the team is as strong as it has ever been. There is a lot of incoming freshmen talent as well.” Team strengths: “We
are gifted technically and have a work ethic that is unique,” Rock said. “The team is relatively young and very coachable.” Team goals: Winning districts, sub-state and the state championship. Last year’s highlights: Scottsbluff qualified for the first sub-state round, falling at Hastings. The Bearc ats hosted the GNAC Tournament and tied the school record for most wins in a season with 12. Former players currently playing in college: Blake Wills, WNCC; Jordan Gealy, UNO
