As we reach the end of Youth Month, we need to ensure that the conversation around child and adolescent mental health does not stop. Each year the Children’s Institute, University of Cape Town, releases The South African Child Gauge. This report gives policymakers a comprehensive review of the research regarding children and mental health in our country. Such a report also helps us advocate for evidence-based strategies regarding improved mental health for children in our country. The South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH) applauds the South African Child Gauge 2022 on Child and Adolescent Mental Health and all the work that went into putting it together. 14

t gives me great pleasure to be writing about a topic that’s so close to my heart. I strongly believe that most of us are carrying some kind of burden inside of us, as children, youth and adults that has been inside of us for years. As a Transformational Coach, International Educator and Community Worker, I had the opportunity of assisting people of all ages to heal their Inner Child Wounds and live a life of abundance. My hope is that over time I could be a catalyst, helping you to heal your wounds and freeing the Inner Child that is stuck in you. The concept of the Inner Child is not new and has been a part of our world for a long time. Carl Jung called it the “Divine Child” which is the essence of who we truly are.

Why does our inner child need

HEALING? No matter how big or small, almost all of us experienced some kind of trauma.

Examples of childhood trauma could include: Types of Trauma Being hit or smacked by your parents/grandparents Having an emotionally unavailable parent who withholds affection Being the recipient of molestation, shown pornography, or any other type of sexual contact from a parent, relative or friend Being bullied at school and by teachers Being the child of divorce Not being fed or provided a safe place to live from your parents Emotional neglect, i.e. not being nurtured, encouraged or supported Being deliberately called names or verbally insulted

Humiliation- Mental abuse Physical and Verbal abuse

Can we blame our parents, our societies, educational instructions, our religion, culture etc? Yes, but that is playing the part of the victim. Most of our parents did not know how to truly love themselves or how to be emotionally honest and we have therefore formed our core relationship with ourselves based on these early childhood learning’s and then built our relationship with ourselves and others from this foundation. We have lived a life reacting to the wounds of the past and the dysfunctional programs we have been subjected to and have now created our dysfunctional culture.

There are many more examples of childhood trauma, but I just wanted to provide you with a few to give you an idea of what inner child work deals with. It’s also important to remember that our parents weren’t the only ones responsible for provoking childhood trauma — our grandparents, brothers, sisters, extended family, members, family friends and childhood friends may have also played a part.

Inner child healing work is the process of contacting, understanding, embracing and healing your inner child. Your inner child represents your Ѓ˥˦˧ ˢ˥˜˚˜ˡ˔˟ ˦˘˟˙ ˧˛˔˧ ˘ˡ˧˘˥˘˗ into this world; it contains your capacity to experience wonder, joy, innocence, sensitivity, and playfulness.

It is not our past that affects us; it is the images and memories of it. By accessing our Inner Child and reclaiming this wounded child we begin to uncover any conscious or unconscious beliefs of ourselves and begin to re-evaluate and transform ourselves and our lives. It is through healing our Inner Child that we can begin to change our behavioral patterns and clear up our emotional responses. We have the power of choice and we are given the opportunity to begin healing ourselves, our Inner Child and thereby creating a solid foundation based on empowerment, love, honesty and creativity that will help each of us to be our True Self. If not treated, this can result in issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, phobias, destructive behavioral patterns, and even chronic illnesses. Also resulting in poor work performance at school, workplace and as parents.

can more effectively occur. Only by loving and healing our inner child can we begin to love ourselves and then, consequently, others.

How does inner child healing work? The way inner child healing works is that you must reparent yourself. One way of thinking about it is to view your hurt inner child as a foster child who has been entrusted to your care and you must do everything in your power to help this child develop resilience, structure, safety, and a healthy upbringing. I will discuss this in more detail over the next few weeks. In the following articles we will be covering: Inner Child: What Is It? How does the Inner Child Healing Work? How to Become better Youths, Students and Adults, and live a meaningful life. Life, What happened to it? And How Can I Fix It? How are we affected if we do ˡˢ˧ Ѓ˫ ˧˛˘ ˣ˥ˢ˕˟˘ˠʲ ʵ˘ ʴ˪˘˦ˢˠ˘

Why is it important to talk to the inner child? In letters or verbal communication, it’s important to ask the inner child what he or she is feeling and what is needed right now. By maintaining a dialogue, healing and transformation

MOMENT

Live in the Moment: First of all, it is important to always be, and live in the moment. When we focus on the things in our past then it is as if we are driving a car forward but looking backwards, in the ˥˘˔˥ʠ˩˜˘˪ ˠ˜˥˥ˢ˥ʡ ˂˙˧˘ˡ ˬˢ˨ ˪˜˟˟ Ѓˡ˗ ˬˢ˨˥˦˘˟˙ continuously referring to past events. On the other hand, talking and worrying about tomorrow and events in the future will really just cause unnecessary anxiety. Deliberately focus your attention and awareness on what is going on around you. Make an effort to listen to the people around you and pay attention to what is happening in real-time, especially your own thoughts and doings. I always say, not living in the now is like setting your watch 10 minutes behind or 10 minutes ahead. It is the worst thing that you can do. Set your watch at exactly the right time and learn to plan better.

ETTING YOUR GOALS

Why goals? Well goals are like having road signs along the way to a faraway destination. If you don’t have a map, and no GPS and you have no idea how to get to your destination then you may begin to realise how important good old fashion road signs and a reliable car is. To me, road signs are very much like having goals. Without goals you won’t get to your destination as effortlessly as it can and should be. A life without goals is like an airplane with no pilot and no Є˜˚˛˧ ˣ˟˔ˡʡ ˇˢ ˚˘˧ ˕˔˖˞ ˧ˢ ˠˬ ˢ˥˜˚˜ˡ˔˟ ˤ˨˘˦˧˜ˢˡʟ Ϣ˗ˢ ˬˢ˨ ˗ˢ what you say you do? And if you don’t, why don’t you? Living in the moment, better planning and goal setting is but 3 of hundreds of things that can and should be done for you to be more focused, aware, goal driven in order to be able to DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU DO.

Q – If you could change anything in South Africa today, what would it be? A – I will have to say the mindset of our people to believe in people that look like them. It is our people that keep us in apprentice mode forever and not give enough opportunity to the smaller businesses to give each a fair chance to prove their competence in delivering a reliable service just as good if not a better service than the bigger companies. Their fear to trust a smaller or black companies in general is not ˝˨ ˦˧˜Ѓ˘˗ ˔˦ ˪˘ ˖˔ˡ ˔˟˦ˢ ˗˘˟˜˩˘˥ ˢˡ our promises. All black companies need,is fair access to market so that they can compete fairly. A – Just go for it, think about what you want to achieve, work on it daily and keep your mind focused on your goal. Q – Would you say you discovered your purpose? A – I would say I am still discovering myself, I am comfortable with my journey this far. I am always inspired to do more and not to be complacent. I am always aspiring to do better. I believe purpose is a lifelong commitment.

Q – When did you know you wanted to be in the Engineering Industry or would you say this path choose you? A – The path pretty much chose me. I was not one of those kids that had a set path growing up. Q – What legacy would you like to leave behind? A – I would like to leave behind a legacy of inspiration for young girls of colour to know that they can make what other people deem as impossible, they can make it possible. They can look up and say “ if she could do that, so can I”

THE LINK BETWEEN

it’s a relationship! When do you decide you want to be an entrepreneur? In South Africa, our government tends to place much emphasis on job creation. In 2016, the unemployment rate was 26.6%. In the fourth quarter of 2018, it increased to 27.7%. Favourable conditions need to exist for the entrepreneurial student to develop a sense of competence and strengthen the self-esteem that come from being immersed in a learning system that has as its roots in the relationships s/he establishes with her/himself and the world, ˘ˡ˔˕˟˜ˡ˚ ˔ ˦˜˚ˡ˜Ѓ˖˔ˡ˧ ˧˥˔˜ˡ˜ˡ˚ʟ ˪˛˜˖˛ takes into account their past history and previous entry into venturing into entrepreneurship.

In other countries entrepreneurship ˜˦ ˦˜˚ˡ˜Ѓ˖˔ˡ˧ ˜ˡ ˚˥ˢ˪˜ˡ˚ ˧˛˘ economy. For instance in Ghana entrepreneurship is synonymous with the creation of new ventures by harnessing resources and successfully running the venture. Thus, only those who have been successful in creating new ventures, particularly small businesses are referred to as Entrepreneurs in Ghana. Desk research of an entrepreneurial education case study in Ghana suggests that tertiary students have a better rate of survival in start-up businesses, based on the education they receive through an Entrepreneurial Clinic at ˈˡ˜˩˘˥˦˜˧˜˘˦ ˜ˡ ʺ˛˔ˡ˔ʟ ˦ˣ˘˖˜Ѓ˖˔˟˟ˬ the ones mentioned below… (Ralph Nyadu- Addo - (Centre for Business Development, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana) and Mavis Serwah Benneh Mensah, (Centre for Entrepreneur hip and Small Enterprise Development, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana) Innovating in business also as an activity should be inherent in Entrepreneurship, and it becomes a way to learn to be an Entrepreneur. How are we going to make the link between education and entrepreneurship attractive to aspiring SMME’s? There has to be differentiating factors such as:

winded programmes, they have a product to manufacture or sell…

Revising entrepreneurial education… introducing is as a subject at preparatory or primary schools and continuing the curriculum at high schools

Government needs to empower more enterprising individuals who can combine practical and theoretical knowledge to youth preparing them for the world of an entrepreneur.

Introduce clinics where a programme is run and entrepreneurs have to attend and become competent in all facets of running a business…this is imperative as we all know an entrepreneur wear many hats. Write a national entrepreneurship policy that focuses on different levels of entrepreneurship and career paths for enterprising people. Incubators, in South Africa we have quite a number of these, however, entrepreneurs do not have the time to attend these long

Before an entrepreneur actually takes that step to start a business, there needs to be assessment of the character traits as well as the ability of the person to actually carry out the tasks of an entrepreneur. There should be a framework to capture the relevant support needed by these people and institutions must be created in order to support our entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Having the education to know how to address these constraints means entrepreneurs are able to take these and make it a positive outcome by taking on the challenges through attending relevant courses or workshops and being aware of how they can change their entrepreneurial activities. In conclusion, education encourages the development of skills and attributes that employers are looking for such as teamwork, ˖ˢˠˠ˜˧ˠ˘ˡ˧ ˔ˡ˗ Є˘˫˜˕˜˟˜˧ˬʡ Entrepreneurship education could therefore also help to develop attributes in entrepreneurs such as realistic knowledge and understanding of business and working life.
