FIELD NOTES Luqman Lawal, MD, MPH, Director of Global Health and Research

A Life-Altering Transition Placing data integrity at the forefront

F

ROM PRACTICING PHYSICIAN IN AFRICA TO Harvard-trained data analyst around the world, Starkey Hearing Foundation Director of Global Health and Research Luqman Lawal made the life-altering transition. Luqman grew up in Nigeria with a family that stressed the importance of giving back to their community. His father taught him that happiness comes from how many other lives you can positively impact. This belief ultimately brought Luqman to Starkey Hearing Foundation. Luqman was a physician in Nigeria before moving to the United States to get his master’s in public health from the University of Minnesota and a certificate in global health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Approaching his graduation, he reviewed options for jobs and saw an opening in his field at Starkey Hearing Foundation. After assessing the life-changing work the Foundation does around the world, Luqman jumped at the chance for the position and was brought on board in April 2014. As Director of Global Health and Research, Luqman works tirelessly using data to show the difference the Foundation is making in the lives of people around the globe. His collected data from five different continents displays a strong inverted bell curve in the difference of a patient’s quality of life before and after receiving hearing aids from the Foundation.

6

S TA R K E Y H E A R I N G FO U N DAT I O N

However, Luqman does much more for the Foundation than number crunching. He also spends much of his time traveling the world to help create and strengthen relationships with local partners to further develop and sustain the Foundation’s Community-Based Hearing Health Care Program. “Luqman has brought the much needed public health dimension to the Foundation team,” Tani Austin, Foundation co-Founder, said. “His knowledge and experience in data analysis has allowed us to build a very unique world reporting outlet on hearing-related information. His simple, sustainable and scalable approach is unmatched!” He was quick to return the praise for Bill and Tani Austin, he conveyed, “Bill and Tani’s dedication and passion for their work is incredibly inspiring. Their work ethic is second to none. They’ve changed my perspective on life and how much you can do for others.” Luqman plans to utilize the data collection from thousands of patients to show the differences hearing aids have made in their quality of life. His goal is to publish these results in academic journals. “My hope is to continue to show the vast scale of the Foundation’s sustainable hearing health care model around the world,” Luqman said. “There’s really no other entity out there helping people to the level of Starkey Hearing Foundation, when it comes to hearing health.”

NOTEWORTHY 2016 Hearing Innovation Expo

tarkey Hearing Foundation joined Starkey Hearing Technologies January 20-24 for the 2016 Hearing Innovation Expo to share the life-changing impact of our efforts. More than 3,200 hearing professionals from over 40 countries gathered at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for one of the industry’s biggest events.

Presidents Clinton and Bush Promote Power of Purpose at the Hearing Innovation Expo Every year, the incredible support of our friends and volunteers make giving the gift of hearing possible to so many people in need around the world. President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush discussed their support and experience with the Foundation through their keynote speeches. “What you do or fail to do has unintended consequences and that’s the ‘butterfly effect’,” Clinton said. “When people work together across the lands that might otherwise divide them, they focus on other people and give them better lives. And Starkey Hearing Foundation is part of that. We can all do something; we all have a ‘butterfly effect.’ And our wings will flap a lot more productively if we all flap our wings together. The easiest way to achieve something is when you aren’t doing it alone.” Clinton spoke of the Foundation’s partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and how together they enact change around the world. Closing out the Expo, Bush emphasized the importance of diversity and working together to accomplish goals. “The most important thing to do when trying to get results is to call in those responsible for getting those results and ask them questions,” he said. “A leader analyzes what you do and don’t know and then you surround yourself with those people that do know what you don’t.”

NBA Hall-of-Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Actor Ben Affleck Expound the Value of Giving Back Purpose and philanthropy prevalent throughout the final day of the Hearing Innovation Expo. Former NBA star Earvin “Magic” Johnson talked about the value of giving back and how he incorporates that into his life. “Your gravestone isn’t going to say how much money you made,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be about how much you impacted, how you helped a community. This company has changed your life, and you’re changing lives with this company.” Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) founder and actor Ben Affleck spoke of how his life has evolved since founding the ECI and how working with the Foundation through Operation Change truly altered his view of philanthropy. “What we are investing in is people,” Affleck said of his work with Operation Change and ECI. “We were working on cultural entrepreneurship. People want to work. People want to be proud of what they do. They don’t want handouts. They want to be part of the solution. A little push can give them the momentum to get going.” Moved by the Expo participant’s emotional speeches and immense support for the Foundation’s work, Bill Austin reminded everyone about the true meaning behind giving the gift of hearing. “So the world may hear isn’t about hearing aids,” he said. “It’s about understanding each other. If we all work together, we can give people the chance to understand each other. I can’t do it. You can’t do it. We can do it. Together, we will change the world.” Planning for the next Hearing Innovation Expo, scheduled for January 3-7, 2018 in Las Vegas is already underway. Starkey Hearing Foundation will once again be in attendance to showcase our efforts to change the world through the gift of hearing and connect people together through sharing and caring.

Starkey Hearing Institute Opens in Zambia S

TARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION MADE HISTORY with the opening of the unprecedented Starkey Hearing Institute on May 17th, 2016. Esther Lungu, First Lady of Zambia, Richard Brown, Foundation board chair, Tani Austin, Foundation co-founder, Keith Becker, senior director of operations, and Dr. Alfred Mwamba, audiologist and executive director of Starkey Hearing Institute Zambia led the ribbon cutting, marking the milestone event as the organization that will deliver hope and hearing to Africa where there have been few professionals to help the more than 36 million with hearing loss. Starkey Hearing Foundation has been dedicated and worked diligently to bring hearing health care to the developing world. This effort continues the vision and legacy of William F. Austin of providing hearing to those who cannot hear. The opening is a capstone event of Austin’s more than 50 years of work to bring the message of peace and understanding through hearing health care to the world with his simple, sustainable, and scalable WFA® community-based hearing health care model. This model is precedent-setting, establishing and shifting the paradigm that all the world can hear is possible, especially those who live in underdeveloped countries. Inspired by Albert Schweitzer’s missionary work, Mr. Austin set a course to give the gift of hearing, creating Starkey Hearing Foundation with the goal; “So the world may hear.” To date, the Foundation has a global reach of more than 100 countries, providing more than 1.9 million hearing devices. Moreover, Starkey Hearing Foundation has 40 sustainable hearing healthcare programs around the world, with 94.4% of the workers living in the communities they work in, which is unprecedented in global hearing health care today.

12

S TA R K E Y H E A R I N G FO U N DAT I O N

To further provide more hearing health care in Africa, the Foundation partnered with Dr. Mwamba to create an educational program designed to equip students with the academic rigor, resources, and tools to advance hearing health care services. Starkey Hearing Institute in Zambia is opening by training 12 students from nine African countries, with the goal of providing hearing health care to more than two million people in Africa by the year 2030. “900,000 Zambians don’t have hearing care,” Mwamba said. “That is a scary number. Being in this position where I can be of service and be part of some very revolutionary work is very exciting.” Upon receiving a one-year education in hearing instrument sciences, accredited by International Hearing Society, these specialists will return to their communities to identify, diagnose, and treat people who have hearing loss and advocate to prevent hearing loss. The result is sustained and measureable support of hearing health in communities worldwide. “Any time we can get more partners involved, it adds to amount of impact we can have around the globe. That’s what Starkey Hearing Institute is all about,” Foundation co-Founder Tani Austin said. This pioneer Starkey Hearing Institute initiative was chosen to take place in Zambia because of the strong partnership with the government and incredible support from Zambia’s First Lady, Esther Lungu. “This Institute is going to serve all of Africa, and because of Starkey Hearing Foundation the whole world will be helped,” Mrs. Lungu said.

OR NINE YEARS, CHILDREN AND ADULTS ACROSS the United States have received the gift of hearing before one of the biggest events in the world.

On February 6, you could find the Starkey mission team at San Francisco State University where 134 participants received their individualized hearing aids and encouragement from professional athletes and award-winning artists. The participants cheered when they saw Ted Ginn Jr. of the Carolina Panthers arrive to help just a day before playing in the Super Bowl. “Whenever I can give back to Starkey Hearing Foundation, I try to,” Ginn Jr. said. “They call and text to keep up with me. I was with two or three different teams, and they were still with me, they still had my back. They give 365 days a year.” Long-time friend of Starkey Hearing Foundation and Academy Award®-winning actress Marlee Matlin performed sign language interpretation of the national anthem by Lady Gaga. Many other familiar faces took part in the event including NFL® All-Pros Larry Fitzgerald and Adrian Peterson, and singer Jordin Sparks. The hearing mission also welcomed a handful of new celebrity friends as well, including rapper 50 Cent and a cast of NFL players who were attending the nearby NFL Pro Camp. “To see the smile on her face, that’s really what it’s all about,” New York Jets tight end Zach Sudfeld said after seeing a young patient receive hearing aids for the first time. “It’s just incredible work that they’re doing here. I’m so humbled and fortunate to be a part of it.”

All the celebrities who came out had striking reactions to seeing patients, ranging in ages from 4 to 84, receive their new hearing aids. The stars all talked at length about what their hearing means to them and the impact they hope that having better hearing will have. The athletes and celebrities didn’t just show up and leave, they stayed and spent time talking with the waiting patients, signing autographs, taking photos, and answering questions. There’s no counting the number of selfies that were taken at the hearing mission. “Bill and Tani are great people, and they give nothing but love,” Adrian Peterson said after signing dozens of autographs for patients. “What they do is amazing. It’s great to see the support and have the athletes come out and give smiles to the children and adults.” While it was fantastic to have so many big names join the event, the greatest feeling came from hearing, communicating, and connecting with so many people. This event demonstrated the care and concern for those who want to hear better. The modern digital hearing aids the patients received can positively impact their lives and the lives of those around them. “Our Super Bowl hearing missions are truly amazing,” Starkey Hearing Foundation Executive Director Brady Forseth said. “Each year they give us the opportunity to come out to a new community, be joined by some of our fantastic supporters, and provide the gift of hearing to people in need.”

MMEDIATELY AFTER FITTING PATIENTS WITH hearing aids at Starkey Hearing Foundation’s Super Bowl 50 Hearing Mission, our mission team set off to continue giving the gift of hearing in Mexico. While watching the big game, the team spent the first night putting thousands of batteries in hearing aids in preparation for the next week. Having conducted hearing missions for many years in Mexico, the teamwork with Starkey Mexico has been exceedingly efficient. The days were well organized to give quality care to patients in a seamless and efficient manner. Each day began at 6 a.m. to prepare for hundreds of patients. The team got right to work providing hearing aids and counseling to make sure the patients would be comfortable using their devices. After the last patient was seen, we packed up, got on the plane and set off to the next city. As they worked to give hearing to thousands of people in 14 cities across Mexico, the team logged more than 10,000 miles. One patient left us with an indelible memory from the hearing mission. Saul, a 3-year-old boy, came to the hearing mission in Monterrey having never heard sound, but as soon as he was fit with hearing aids, a huge smile spread across his face. Saul’s laughter filled the mission site and further energized the team to continue to help change the lives of people in need.

Sisters now hear each other

SISTERS SHARE MANY THINGS, and on this hearing mission in Mexico we were thrilled to help sisters share hearing. Angelica, 5, and Hanna, 6, were both born with profound hearing loss and came to the mission site having never heard each other. Their eyes lit up with excitement when they were fit with hearing aids. It was an incredible joy to see the sisters begin to audibly communicate with one another. We greatly look forward to following their hearing progress.

T

HE BEGINNING OF 2016 STARTED THE SAME way our Community-Based Hearing Health Care Model does – connecting with local partners and working to train them in our model.

“The first woman I fit with hearing aids was so grateful and happy,” Karissa Bayer, student at LI Au. D Consortium said. “I will never forget the way she hugged me after she was fit. It was life changing.”

Starkey Hearing Foundation’s team traveled to Vietnam in January to train more than 30 people in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in January and give them the knowledge to provide local hearing health care.

Trainings then continued in the Philippines. We were thrilled that not only were we able to add 13 new coordinators to help give hearing in the Philippines, but were also able to establish relationships and train people in countries we’ve never been before, including Fiji, Samoa and American Samoa. In the case of the latter two, we have since already gone in and conducted hearing missions, and AfterCare services are now being provided.

These coordinators are vital to our model of giving hearing health care anywhere we go. They’re the ones who screen the patients and get the ear molds for qualified candidates. They are also the ones who provide follow-up AfterCare services to ensure the hearing device a patient receives is helping as it should. The trainings in Vietnam also included students from the Long Island Doctor of Audiology Consortium. It was incredible to see their expressions when they were able to get hands on experience working with patients.

26

Our early 2016 trainings concluded in India, where again we were able to provide knowledge of our model not only to people in India, but also welcomed people from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. It’s fantastic that we’re able to add more local coordinators around the world who will be able to continue to provide hearing health care in their communities.

“Training is vital to Starkey Hearing Foundation,” Richard Brown, Foundation President and Board Chair said. “It gives us the opportunity to create connections, provide needed education and allows us to give hearing health care in new places.”

N APRIL 16, 2016, A 7.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE shook the coast of Ecuador, causing mass destruction across the region. More than 600 people lost their lives and thousands more were injured in the aftermath. Starkey Hearing Foundation’s Latin America team already had a hearing mission planned to give hearing health care in Ecuador later in April, and rather than let the devastation of the earthquake scare them away from accomplishing the hearing mission, they were instead inspired to do more. The hearing mission team helped 92 families in a community from the Los Rios province of Ecuador who were affected by the earthquake and were yet to receive any outside support, several of whom completely lost their houses and were forced to live outside. We were very humbled by hearing the patients’ recalling of the earthquake. They described the terrifying fear they felt as the very earth beneath their feet crumbled, the sadness they felt about losing many of their worldly possessions, and even a few sorrowfully recalled knowing people who lost their lives.

To help beyond providing hearing care, the hearing mission team also provided people in the community with groceries, blankets and other provisions to help improve their living conditions.

Yet despite having such terror recently take place in their lives, our team was very inspired by the upbeat nature of the patients. They showed tremendous gratitude for receiving the gift of hearing, and left the hearing mission with smiles on their faces.

We wish all the best to the people of Ecuador. We’ll continue to follow up with patients we fit with hearing devices with our ongoing services and empowerment tools. We hope all affected by this earthquake can, as best possible, move beyond this tragedy.

EGINNING IN 2015, STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION began connecting with local partners in both Samoa and American Samoa to bring hearing help to people in need in those countries. Those connections led to Phase 1 hearing screenings in November 2015 in the cities of Apia and Savaii. Our team returned in April this year to conduct our first-ever hearing missions in Samoa and American Samoa. The people of both nations were very welcoming to our team. We were thrilled to see so many bright smiles on the hundreds of people we gave the give the gift of hearing. A fun fact about Samoa and American Samoa is that despite being only 25 miles apart, they are on opposite sides of the International Date Line. That created a bit of a time warp for our hearing mission team as they were among the first people in the world to see daylight on Friday, April 8 in Samoa, only to seemingly go back in time as they traveled to American Samoa to help patients on Thursday, April 7.

ONE DAY AFTER OUR TEAM ARRIVED IN Samoa, a surprise cyclone popped up in the region. Fortunately, Cyclone Xena stayed just south of the country, and our team mostly heard rumblings of the storm in the distance as they didn’t miss a beat to continue giving the gift of hearing.

We always appreciate new local partners who step up to help give hearing health care in places we’ve never been before. Their support is critical to provide follow up AfterCare to patients as well. We look forward to continuing to hear how hearing devices are helping patients in Samoa and American Samoa.

N THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, MORE THAN 3,000 hearing devices were provided for people in need by Starkey Hearing Foundation in the cities of Santo Domingo and Santiago. We have been to this beautiful Island eight times, distributing more than 37,000 hearing devices to young and old so that they can receive the gift of hearing and the power of caring. “I want to do everything possible so we can continue missions,” says Antonio Esteban, hearing aid specialist and country coordinator for the Dominican. “Dreams are coming true here at the mission.” The stream of patients did not subside. The local Red Cross was a critical partner to ensure the safety and care of the patients for the hearing missions. A survey of those patients indicated that over 35 percent didn’t know the cause of their hearing loss. And 24 percent experienced hearing loss at birth. The majority of the patient’s age ranged between 6 and 64. More than 30 percent were over 65 and 6 percent were five and under. Specifically, we had one patient who was 115 years-of-age and another who was one year old.

The patients register and stop at the otoscopy station where we check the ears for infection, and then they are off to the fitting station. Once the patients have their devices, they learn how to operate and care for them. They then finish at a final quality control station. The hearing missions in the Dominican Republic are emblematic of the work the Foundation does across the globe. We collaborate with local and national government, nongovernment organizations (NGOs), and health leaders to identify patients and fit them with hearing devices, while also providing community-based hearing health care and mainstreaming services. Patients receive hearing health care via a proven methodology utilizing the Wide Frequency Audibility (WFA®) fitting method that assesses the audibility for speech sounds, prevents loudness discomfort, and balances amplification between ears. Everything we accomplished in the Dominican Republic and continue to do at Starkey Hearing Foundation is rooted in our commitment to empower the patient through better hearing.

This work with the Starkey Hearing Foundation is a powerful example of how we, as individuals, can be the change we want to see, and hear, in the world.”

“Fantastic to connect someone like Brian with something he’s so passionate about,” Brady Forseth, Foundation Executive Director said. “To give him that next to great music guys from LSTN Headphones and Morey Management Group makes it all the better.”

ACROSS THE WORLD, MUSIC IS UNIVERSAL. And music is very important to the Dominican way of life. When Brian was a year old, he received medicine that caused a terrible allergic reaction that left him with severe vision loss, skin conditions, and hearing loss. When Brian was eight, doctors operated on him and during the surgery, they perforated his right inner ear, which caused more hearing loss. With his limited hearing, he gravitated toward thumping music, which created an interest in songwriting. As shown in the picture to the left, Brady Forseth, our Executive Director, escorted Brian to his fitting. Destiny found Brian as the people helping him during his fitting were Andrew Bardsley, Global Marketing Manager, Chivas Regal, Joe Huff, co-Founder of LSTN Headphones, and Jim Morey, Morey Management group, who has managed such individuals as Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond. Joe adjusted his hearing devices and a big smile came over Brian’s face. The first words he heard were Joe’s asking, “Can you sing?” Brian nodded yes, and he sang music popular in the Dominican Republic. Brian also celebrated his hearing by listening to music with Jim. Wishing all the best to Brian, we hope he continues to enjoy listening to all the music he can.

DR. RAQUEL RODRIQUEZ Lending a hand in the Dominican Republic

The Doctor is In Giving the Gift of Hearing in the Dominican Republic

D

R. RAQUEL RODRIQUEZ WAS OUR RESIDENT ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician for our recent Dominican Republic hearing mission, overseeing otoscopy appointments and clearing any infections. At the hearing mission, she discovered an affinity for fittings. After she finished her Otoscopy rounds and addressed more than 20 infections, Dr. Rodriquez gravitated toward Phase 2, which is our hearing device fittings. “I love seeing the eyes light up.” Dr. Rodriquez said. “When I see children in my office, they don’t talk. Today, I heard many children speaking, and it made me smile.” Fitting a hearing device on a patient was new for the doctor, she usually sees patients at the front end and sends them to an audiologist. “I love trying new things and I found fitting the hearing devices very gratifying and full of love and amazement.”

Dr. Rodriquez went to medical school at the Universidad Iberoamericana (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and attended Hospital Universitario Virgen Del Rocio (Seville, Spain) for her ENT residency. Dr. Rodriguez stated that the “ear” is what drew her to otolaryngology. “The ears are very complex and our surgeries are complicated. The intricacies in this part of our anatomy are fascinating.” She said. Her hope for the older patients is that improved hearing allows them to reintroduce themselves and influence others positively as they were helped today. “I definitely will do more missions.” Dr. Rodriquez said.

COVER STORY May 2016

The “Real Deal” Inspires Patients Life Lessons from Evander Holyfield — Find Something You’re Good At

W

HEN YOU GET KNOCKED DOWN, you get back up — no matter how many times life pulls a punch. This has been Evander Holyfield’s story. This fivetime world champion has been on top of the world, achieving greatness in his career, but he has also experienced turmoil and loss. This is a story of perseverance in the ring and in life. Evander demonstrates how determination and faith can get you through loss. His story is an inspiration to the patients of Starkey Hearing Foundation to achieve their potential. Last year, Evander was introduced to the Foundation while attending the Muhammed Ali Parkinson event. Leaders from Starkey invited him to participate in the April 18-20, 2016 hearing health care mission in the Dominican Republic. More than 1,500 people living in the cities of Santo Domingo and Santiago waited in long lines to receive hearing devices from the Starkey Hearing Foundation mission team. While on the hearing mission, Evander spent 12-hour days encouraging young and old with words of support and bumps of fists. With warmth and poise, Evander met hundreds of people and signed autographs wishing them well with their new hearing device. The staff noted how Evander embraced being a member of the mission team. He wore the team uniform, filled out patient forms indicating level of hearing device, and helped his partner, Shevon, assess the Wide Frequency Audibility (WFA®) method to ensure patient satisfaction.

44

This 6’1”, 226 lbs, larger than life champion emitted a downto-earth demeanor and calm nature, which seemed contrary to adjectives describing his career choice. Evander’s team-oriented attitude has been with him since he was young, and was present in his first major boxing debut in the biggest sporting event in the world. Evander acknowledged the world championships, but he really lit up when talking about making the 1984 USA Olympic team at age 21. “The opportunity to represent my country in the Olympics will always be one of best moments of my life,” Evander said. “We were hosting the games in Los Angeles, and the roar of the home crowd chanting U-S-A when we walked in the opening ceremonies made me beam with pride. I loved that moment and was so proud to make the U.S.A. Olympic team. There is such a great feeling being at the Olympics.” He showed his prowess early in the games by definitively winning his matches. Excitement grew around him because of his crushing wins. The world looked to Evander to take the gold for the USA. However, the referee disqualified Evander for a late punch. Experts and fans around the world disputed the referee decision. The Los Angeles audience rose in anger over the unjust call, and it was Evander’s graceful demeanor that averted the ensuing mayhem to reverse the call.

Thumbs up for Hearing Evander’s demonstrated good sportsmanship at a young age made the world newspapers reaffirm that the gold medal should have been his to hold. Holyfield endured many highs and lows in the 10-day athletic event that finished with him taking home a bronze medal. After the medal ceremony, a stranger bellowed at Evander, “You got a raw deal.” The bronze medalist shook his head and said, “No, no, no, I’m the real deal.” And then history happened -- the saying, “The Real Deal” stuck. And when you walk with Evander people still shout the authentic moniker at him even 30 years later. Clearly he has lived up to that image established as a young man. Evander didn’t feel he lost at the Olympics. “I loved everything about the experience, and felt the happiest when I made the team,” he said. “And then I made it to the podium. The Olympics was the catalyst to my career. I knew boxing was now my sport.” Evander would go on to become the only undisputed and undefeated cruiserweight champion in history. He is best known as World Heavyweight Champion who defeated legendary fighters like George Foreman, Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes. And when one names the best boxers of all time, Holyfield makes the list. Growing up in Atmore, Alabama as the youngest of eight, Evander details a very close relationship with his mother, Annie, who imparted his values and determination. “My mom was everything,” Evander said. “She instilled the love of Jesus in me and the need to have him in my life.” In respect for his mother, Evander’s memorabilia shows the bible verse, “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

46

S TA R K E Y H E A R I N G FO U N DAT I O N

Evander’s youth encompassed sports and more sports. “I was a good athlete in general, and I loved playing football,” he said. He dreamed of making the pros but was told he was too small. I came home one day, and told my mom, “I’m not good at football and I’m not going back to it.” And when my mom heard me say that she replied, “Stop complaining and find something you like then, something you are good at. You don’t have to go back to football. Concentrate on boxing, it has nothing to do with being tall.” Evander had already been boxing at the Boys and Girls Club, and next to football, Evander enjoyed learning the art of sparring. By age 18, he was one of the highest-ranked amateurs in the country. “I took my mom’s advice and found what I was good at,” he said. Allowing someone to find something they are good at and opening up the world of opportunity are what the Foundation offers to these kids in the Dominican Republic. Hearing gives people more possibilities to try things. It gives a person who once couldn’t hear an unobstructed path to go after their dreams. “This type of work makes you feel good. You see the kids smiling and their moms crying tears of joy. I’m seeing parents wanting their child to have more. They came here today because they wanted opportunity,” Evander conveyed. “Like them, I didn’t choose my mom, dad, or being poor. However, when I was young, I did receive opportunity.” Evander achieved great heights and acclaim in his life. He also admits he experienced upheaval and loss during his life. He didn’t win all his fights, but Evander always got back up and tried again.

I

N EARLY MAY, STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION WELCOMED a new friend, as former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Tony Blair visited a Starkey hearing mission in Kenya.

Blair’s work with the Africa Governance Initiative (AGI) supports African leaders and governments to turn their visions for development into reality – to get from power plans to power plants, or from a line in a speech to a line of children outside their new school. Given our decades-long history of serving individuals in Africa who have hearing loss and work to address the critical shortage of hearing health care workers in under-development African countries, it was a natural partnership with Blair and his team for a collective impact. “I do a lot of work in a lot of African countries… This is something that is just direct, it’s immediate, it’s simple, it’s scalable and there are large numbers of people who are benefitting from it,” said Blair of the Foundation’s work in Africa. Tani Austin, co-founder of Starkey Hearing Foundation and chief philanthropy officer of Starkey Hearing Technologies, escorted Blair around the hearing mission, introducing him to patients as she spoke to him about the vast need for better hearing health care in Africa. “I’ve just seen the most amazing thing happen, which is the ability to give someone hearing,” Blair said. “For these people this is just a liberation. This is such important work. The Starkey Foundation has managed to do this on a global scale in so many different countries and it’s such a simple clear idea, but it’s got such momentous impact on everybody that it helps.” Studies demonstrate that hearing devices are associated with impressive improvements in the social, emotional, psychological, and economic well-being of people with hearing loss in all hearing loss categories from mild to severe. “The result of today’s mission inspires a person to achieve their potential. We can profoundly and positively impact their quality of life,” said Austin. “The Foundation’s community-based hearing health care model revolves around simplicity, scalability, and sustainability. The model aligns well with Blair’s African Governance Initiative to provide aid to Africa and their model of skills, systems, and structure.”

MEGAN CALL GAVE BIRTH TO A BABY girl, in Logan, Utah on May 10, 2016 at 4:53 a.m. named Adelaide Kenya Call, a name made even more beautiful by her story. Nine months prior, Tom Call, an audiology student at Utah State University, had signed up to join Starkey Hearing Foundation on a hearing mission to Kenya. Tom’s wife, Megan, did not waver with her support even though she was due two weeks after his scheduled return. Despite his offers to stay in Utah, Megan maintained that he should go on the hearing mission to have his own hands-on experience of changing the lives of others as Megan had her own experience helping people in Africa. Shortly after his arrival in Kenya, Megan went into labor and Tom was told he could arrange a flight to return home that night. Megan insisted that he stay. “The baby will be here when you get back,” she said. “You are in Kenya for a special purpose.” Thankfully, Tom was able to hear his baby’s first cries by video conference 9,000 miles away. After finishing giving the gift of hearing in Kenya, he eagerly returned to his wife and infant daughter. Together they decided that the middle name of their daughter would be Kenya. The name, Adelaide Kenya, is an example of the passion and dedication shown by our volunteers. For these qualities we thank the Call family for their devotion. And we wish Adelaide a life full of promise and opportunity as represented in Tom’s mission in Africa.

TARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION HAS WORKED EXTENSIVELY to give the gift of hearing in Africa for decades, and even though we have provided thousands of hearing devices, we are still receiving calls from our partners across the continent asking us for more hearing health missions. Africa is still in need of our help. It was with that in mind that in 2015 the Foundation launched an office in Kenya with a team dedicated to working in Africa year-round. The Foundation’s Africa team has accomplished 10 hearing missions in the first half of 2016 in Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Zambia, providing hearing care for more than 1,400 people in need. Several factors have allowed for this incredible growth. We’ve been increasing our capacity to service more patients with our team based out of our Kenya office, building our infrastructure utilizing the WFA® Community-Based Hearing Health Care model, and focusing on documentation and data analysis. What makes this work in Africa so groundbreaking is how it relies on local teams living within the communities they’re working to help, creating a system where Africans are helping other Africans. By expanding to more remote areas, creating stronger partnerships with regional governments and doing more hearing missions, the Africa team has fit more hearing devices for more people and changed more lives. “We are having a greater impact than ever before,” Owen Olende, Starkey Hearing Foundation’s international development director of East Africa said. “Helping one person means helping a family, a community and a country.”

FARIDA HASSAN HAD LIVED IN ISOLATION without having her hearing before our Africa team fit her with hearing devices in Kenya in April. She was overjoyed at the service she received and her smile was contagious throughout the hearing mission site. When she revisited our team for AfterCare, she talked at length about joy she felt from being able to “enjoy the little things in life like hearing the chirping of birds.” She also mentioned how much safer she felt when traveling now that she could hear the vehicles on the road

N EARLY 2016, STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION was able to establish a new relationship with a local team in Vietnam to help bring hearing care to people in need in that country.

When the hearing mission began in Hanoi, many of the patients, in particular the older ones, seemed a little hesitant to let their guard down, not having a full understanding of our purpose of being there to help. However, as more and more patients received the gift of hearing and the people saw the genuineness of our helpful nature, they began relaxing and opened up to us more and more. Our team then traveled to Ho Chi Minh City, where there were significantly more child patients. We were thrilled to be able to see so many young eyes light up as they began hearing for the first time. It’s great that we were able to establish a new local team in Vietnam, who we hope will be able to continue to give hearing care for years to come.

G

OODNESS THRIVED AT OUR RECENT hearing health care mission in Lisbon Portugal. What stood out at this mission is that we were able to focus on giving the gift of hearing to older individuals. Starkey Hearing Foundation helped patients from Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa, demonstrating at any age, the world is still full of possibility. During Phase 1 of our hearing mission we worked with local partners (in this mission GAES Solidaria) to identify and screen prospective patients. In Lisbon, we knew we could help senior patients with their hearing. And on May 27, during Phase 2, joyous moment after joyous moment filled our hearing mission as patients lit up after receiving their hearing devices. Clearly, our special guests at the mission, Hollywood Vampires, contributed to their happiness. They met and encouraged more than 30 patients. The band first supported a hearing mission in Rio de Janeiro where they witnessed people hearing for the first time. Because of that meaningful experience, they were on board months ago to help patients at the Portugal hearing mission.

60

We had one patient dancing beautifully with lead singer, Alice Cooper’s wife Sheryl. Another memorable moment came when Johnny Depp, also a member of the Hollywood Vampires, teased patient Maria Isabel about liking her hat. “We have our hearing, and these people do not,” said Johnny Depp. “To have Bill and his gang school us, and take part in the process of allowing people to hear makes today meaningful. Anytime you can find yourself making a difference — to see them — we are receiving the gift.” Providing a person the ability to hear has an immediate inspiring impact on that person’s quality of life and a compounding positive effect on the world. Hearing empowers people to reach their full potential and creates a future filled with possibilities. Many were able to hear for the first time, to experience the joy of music and to live more independently as a result of their new found connection to the world. “It was a good day of people coming together to discover humanity through caring,” said Bill Austin, founder, Starkey Hearing Foundation. We want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the hearing health care mission in Portugal. GAES Solidaria was instrumental in the implementation, and Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa and House of Holy Mother of Cross for your wonderful assistance with the patients. The Hollywood Vampires made the day incredibly special for all of us and demonstrated caring and concern.

“EVERYTHING.” THIS WAS LUIS’ RESPONSE WHEN ASKED what is his favorite sound after receiving his hearing devices at the Lisbon, Portugal mission. Luis’ hearing became impaired when he was 45-years-old due to trauma. When Luis arrived at the hearing mission, he had approximately 10 percent hearing in his right ear, and possibly around 40 percent in his left ear. At 58, Luis came to the hearing mission as a kind, outgoing man seeking help. He wanted his life back on track. He was unemployed and wanted to work. Like everyone, he wants a happy, beautiful life. His friends would say to him, “Say I don’t talk to you. With you it’s repeat, repeat.” And Luis would reply back, “Then don’t speak to me.” Hearing loss tears away social connections and diminishes quality of life. The staff at Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa told Luis about the Starkey Hearing Foundation misson, and they helped him sign up to receive primary ear-care services, take ear impressions, and tailor an ear mold specifically to him. At the mission, Tani and Bill Austin fit Luis with his hearing device. He also received additional inspiration by a group of vampires. Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and the Hollywood Vampires stopped by to support the patients and the Starkey Hearing Foundation prior to their Rock in Rio concert. “You’re the celebrity today,” Bill Austin, founder of the Starkey Hearing Foundation, said to Luis as he was getting fit for his new hearing devices. “You’re the first patient today – numero uno.” “Alice Cooper, lead singer of Hollywood Vampires, chimed in, “You’re the special one.” The rock group extended an invitation to Luis to attend the concert as their guest. “I like music, all types of music. First time I will see the concert – with Alice Cooper,” said Luis. Luis attended the concert where he danced and gave a front row thumbs up to Alice Cooper. And said, “Good music with Alice.” Our hope for Luis is that his improved hearing amplifies his full potential, providing opportunity to jobs, improved health, and increased understanding. And at any age, the gift of hearing builds a bridge to hope and holds great power to transform a person’s life for the better. “Today is a beautiful day of my life, not many problems today. I’m feeling happy,” conveyed Luis. “Thank you – beautiful dreams come true.”

SIMPLE. SCALABLE. SUSTAINABLE.

Starkey Hearing Foundation’s Four-Phase Model of Community-Based Hearing Health Care

More than 360 million people worldwide, including 32 million children, struggle with disabling hearing loss according to the World Health Organization. In many remote parts of the world, people have little to no access to hearing health care.

1

PHASE PATIENT IDENTIFICATION We identify and train local teams comprised of partners, clinicians and community-based hearing health care coordinators. Our teams collect important hearing health care information while screening hearing aid candidates. Individual ear impressions are taken of qualified candidates and shipped back to the United States to create earmolds.

62

S TA R K E Y H E A R I N G FO U N DAT I O N

Starkey Hearing Foundation works tirelessly in more than 100 countries to provide care to these communities. Our four-phase model is a simple, scalable and sustainable approach to specifically help the populations we serve.

2

PHASE THE HEARING MISSION Starkey Hearing Foundation’s mission team fit hearing aids and earmolds on qualified candidates, provide them with batteries, and counsel them on proper hearing aid use and care. Further training is given to the local program to ensure that proper follow-up care is given once patients leave the hearing mission site.

3

4

PHASE

PHASE

AFTERCARE SERVICES

MAINSTREAM OPPORTUNITIES

Starkey Hearing Foundation’s local programs provide all patients with follow-up AfterCare services within the first 60 days of receiving their hearing aids. They continue to check in with patients regularly to ensure hearing aids are working and fitting well.

Receiving a hearing aid is just the beginning of our patients’ journeys. Starkey Hearing Foundation’s ultimate goal is to empower patients so they can become self-determinate, provide for their families, and openly share their ideas, hopes and dreams.

During AfterCare, patients receive batteries, additional counseling, and free services to repair or replace hearing aids and earmolds as needed.

Our Phase 4 approach works to give hearing aid recipients the opportunity to mainstream into the hearing world and connect to their communities.

Local programs also work to identify qualified hearing aid candidates for future Phase 1 activities.

This also includes supporting schools for the deaf and hard of hearing to implement speech and language development programs, and mainstream students who progress to the level of their hearing peers.

Often a lot of focus is on Phase 2, when patients receive the gift of hearing. However, that’s just a part of our approach. Our team actively works to help the world hear better 365 days a year. Our model is simple, scalable and sustainable because we have a consistent, ongoing effort, not only from our mission team, but from the local coordinators who are actively working with patients before and after the hearing mission.

MADDIE & TAE Reminding youth to Listen Carefully

Listen Carefully Contest Country Music Stars Maddie & Tae Put on Show for Winning Teams

F

OUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION AND RADIO DISNEY Music Awards-duo Maddie & Tae joined Starkey Hearing Foundation on May 14 to celebrate the high school students whose video submissions for the national Listen Carefully hearing health campaign took top honors.

The Listen Carefully video contest received entries from 624 teams from across all 50 states. The contest received more than 200,000 votes with the winning entry coming from the Germantown team of Miranda Pierce, Christopher Hall and Tye Gray.

Festivities at Northwest High School Auditorium in Germantown, Maryland, culminated with the singer/songwriters performing a private live show for students of the high school.

“Without having hearing, not being able to hear your friends, socially it would change your life, and sitting in a classroom and not being able to hear your teacher, it would affect your grades,” Pierce said.

Currently, one in six American teens has noise-induced hearing loss from loud sounds. It is a widespread public health epidemic, but with very little awareness. This hearing loss is irreversible, but it is also preventable.

Maddie & Tae gave a fantastic performance for hundreds of high school students, and the night was filled with great excitement. However, we’re also happy that in the end the most important message was received: Your hearing is fragile — listen carefully.

“Hearing is something we take for granted,” multi-instrumentalist Maddie Marlow said. “Given the growth in teen hearing loss, we are so glad to help support the Starkey Hearing Foundation’s efforts to inform and raise awareness among young people.”

“We’re really excited that Maddie & Tae are lending their support in raising awareness of hearing loss and the students who made these outstanding videos,” said Starkey Hearing Foundation Executive Director Brady Forseth. “Teenage hearing loss is growing at almost epidemic proportions and the videos produced by these students, and others around the country, do a tremendous service by making other students aware of risks to their hearing.”

Adds Tae Dye, “Honoring these students who’ve produced such great videos makes us happy. Giving back by using your creativity is what Maddie and I have always done, and this is such an important message.”

Social Media Influence Ambassadors Expand Reach of Foundation’s Global Impact

O CEOS TWEET, INSTRAGRAM, OR USE FACEBOOK? In 2011 Bill Austin knew about the rise of social media, but had not embraced it. Today, the Founder of Starkey Hearing Foundation keeps a schedule so busy that inhibits snapchatting. But entrepreneurs possess the vision to see when a medium can further their work, even when it stemmed from a teen singing star. Miley Cyrus joined Mr. Austin on a hearing mission in Haiti and was able to show him the vast reach and interaction she could get with her millions of fans as she shared Foundation messaging. Miley has 30 million Twitter followers and 45 million Facebook fans. Reaching the star’s audience increases the Foundation’s relevance and educates them on the importance of protecting their hearing. Since the Haiti mission, the Foundation has grown immensely in supporters who have significant social media reach and share their experiences of giving hearing to people in need. And the

Foundation embraces the luminaries that gives them a new voice and expanded followers. Our recent Super Bowl hearing mission serves as a great example of the huge reach our supporters have in helping share our cause. Across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the followings of celebrity supporters at the hearing mission included 50 Cent (56 million), Jordin Sparks (11 million), Larry Fitzgerald (3.5 million), Adrian Peterson (2.9 million), and Marlee Matlin (575,000). While we have incredible support from our own social media followers (note, if you haven’t already, be sure to follow us at @starkeycares on Twitter and Instagram, and Starkey Hearing Foundation on Facebook). We invite celebrities to our hearing missions to help patients share in the joy of the gift of hearing, and greatly enjoy when they choose to share those experiences with their large social media audiences so more people can see those life-changing moments.

Few things have helped us reach that audience more than having supporters, such as skateboarder Tony Hawk, post to his more than 12 million followers about protecting their hearing.

Our social media supporters go beyond individuals as well. Delta Zeta Sorority’s commitment to donate $5 million over the next five years has been instrumental to our growth. Moreover, the Foundation couldn’t be more appreciative of the individual members who are very active on social media promoting their fundraiser or retweeting our posts. Hardly a day goes by without someone associated with Delta Zeta Sorority posting about supporting Starkey Hearing Foundation. Delta Zeta Sorority exemplifies the power of social media. When you connect with us you are in good company. So follow us and you will also receive posts from the many of the biggest artists and athletes in the world.

JORDIN SPARKS helps give the gift of hearing in San Francisco.

Firsthand Jordin Sparks Singer-Songwriter and Season Six Winner of American Idol.

Tell us about your history with Starkey Hearing Foundation. I actually did their first Super Bowl mission in Miami, and it was a lot of fun. I remember Bill at the detailing station working on hearing aids to make them perfect. We were there for hours just helping whoever we could in the Miami area. Ever since then I’ve gone on hearing missions, I’ve seen them at other Super Bowl events, and the work they do is just absolutely incredible. To be here today is just awesome. It’s now nine years since I was first introduced to them and the amazing work that they do. To hear the numbers of how many people they’re helping around the world and domestically is absolutely incredible. What does it mean to be here and be part of Starkey Hearing Foundation’s Super Bowl 50 event? To be here at Super Bowl 50, nine years later [since being introduced to the Foundation], the time has passed incredibly quickly, but I know that in that time they’ve affected so many people. So Super Bowl 50, we are here, we are helping, we are changing the world.

What has your work with the Foundation abroad been like? I’ve only been on one hearing mission abroad. I went to Rwanda, and it was such an incredible experience not only because it was my first time there but because of the work we got to do. I was telling Delta Zeta Sorority about my experience there and what it’s like to see the hope in everyone’s eyes as they’re their waiting. When you’re able to give them that, what they’re hoping for, there’s no other feeling like it. How inspiring is it to see the young Delta Zetas here at the Super Bowl Hearing Mission? I have my own campaign called “I’m M.A.D. Are You?” We encourage young people to go out and make a difference. So to see these young women of Delta Zeta raising money and coming out to make a difference and get involved is amazing. People are going to see them and be inspired to want to do something as well.

This year we said goodbye to a champion, legend and true humanitarian. Muhammad Ali’s impact on the world was as enormous as his heart. We are honored by the support the Starkey Hearing Foundation received from Muhammad and Lonnie Ali. We are forever thankful for their generosity. “Everyone has a chance at true greatness, anyone can serve! Muhammad Ali took this chance to serve humanity to new heights and made our world a better place, which is certainly true greatness!” – Bill Austin Our thoughts and prayers to Lonnie and the Ali family.
