AROUND THE WORLD Making Hearing Health Care a Priority

Kenya Recognizes WFA Method ®

A Hearing Health Care Plan

K

ENYA LAUNCHED ITS FIRST-EVER PLAN THAT Starkey Hearing Foundation played a critical role in its implementation and execution. Kenya National Strategy for Ear Health and Hearing Care is the country’s strategic plan that advances hearing health care in Kenya, a major health accomplishment to help more than two million in Kenya who live with hearing loss. This is another significant milestone for SHF as the plan includes the WFA® Community-based hearing health care model, which demonstrates support and recognizes the effectiveness for our proven model from the World Health Organization and the Republic of Kenya. The event included Tani Austin, co-founder, Starkey Hearing Foundation, who emphasized the power of collaboration with local and national government, nongovernment organizations (NGOs), and health leaders to help people with hearing loss. Leaders in hearing health care have witnessed the model in action and how SHF works with them to identify patients and fit them with hearing devices, while also providing follow-up care, mainstreaming services, and self-empowerment tools. Stakeholders and authors of the plan can attest to the simplicity of the model and that hearing devices are provided free of cost. In Kenya, SHF teams are in place to provide ongoing care and analysis to monitor effectiveness, which makes it sustainable, and that we can fit from one to thousands of patients in a given timeframe, which makes it scalable.

FIELD NOTES: Tony Hawk Teaming Up with the Foundation

The Ripple Effect South Africa Hearing Mission with Tony Hawk

T

HE DEFINITION OF RIPPLE EFFECT IS CONTINUING and spreading results of an event or action. The goal of philanthropy is to see the ripple effect of work that results from someone’s passion to help others. Whether that passion started with them or not — it continues on, perpetuating a positive and lasting benefit to others. Continuation. Change. The goal for the Starkey Hearing Foundation, and those that partner with us, is to continue giving the gift of hearing to those in need across the globe. This gift means opportunity now exists for people with hearing loss to pursue an education, career, or life dreams that they once thought impossible. Similarly, a person who contributed to the gift and witnessed how it helps also saw a change in themselves as a result of their gift. The Foundation strives for positive continuation of its mission and aims to spread hope and humanity to each person it helps. The ripple effect was certainly in place as the mission team gathered in Johannesburg, South Africa with Tony Hawk and the Tony Hawk Foundation, other professional skaters, Skateistan officials, and Medifix Hearing Systems to give the gift of hearing to 200 students from the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf. The mission coincided with the grand opening of the South African Skateistan Skate school that supports youths with various programs for skating, education, and youth leadership, all of which encourage growth and positive change for kids. “I love it. I’m excited to be back here with Starkey,” Tony Hawk said. “I never thought I would be able to bring two of my interests together like this. It’s honestly it’s one of the most rewarding things I can think of.” Both events filled the students with excitement as they were receiving their hearing devices and meeting Tony Hawk, expert skateboarders, and South African native and rising skateboarder, Thalente Biyela.

10

S TA R K E Y H E A R I N G FO U N DAT I O N

Biyela was thrilled to have the opportunity to support and care for students who have hearing loss. “I never thought I would have done something like this -- through skateboarding. It was such a life-changing moment for these kids,” said Biyela. These joint endeavors encapsulate what the Foundation is all about, bringing people together, connecting them to mainstream life, and opening a world of opportunity instantly and with significant impact. Thalente Biyela has a compelling life story that represents a ripple effect. Today, he lives in Los Angeles and pursues skating, but his journey to skating star was not easy. He was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. At 13, he was orphaned, and ended up living on the streets and addicted to drugs. Although through all the upheaval during his childhood, Biyela was still able to hone his skating skills. He received many helping hands who supported his efforts to overcome his addiction and succeed in life. With help and hard work, he overcame many obstacles. He connected with Tony Hawk when Tony visited South Africa for a skate camp. Hawk noticed Biyela’s natural talent for skating. They reconnected after Biyela moved to Los Angeles to pursue skating.

Thalente Biyela

Biyela finds himself in the people he is helping now at the mission and skate park. He put the ripple effect into play with changing his life and continuing his positive work despite trials and struggles. After time, Biyela said, “I have a whole different perspective on life from that mission.” He continued, “It gave me a whole different outlook on everything, like the privilege of life, of hearing, of speaking.” Once all the fittings were done, the team of volunteers and hundreds of students flooded the skate park to try skateboarding for the first time with Tony Hawk and his team. Their faces and Tony’s endearing smile left everyone with hope from ear to ear.

NOTEWORTHY: Dalai Lama Graces India Hearing Mission

India with the Dalai Lama Spreading Peace and Understanding

S

TARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION’S INDIA HEARING mission featured many memorable moments, but few will compare to when His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama graced our hearing mission in Dharamsala. There were more than 200 patients who received the gift of hearing in Dharamsala and his Holiness personally greeted patients and blessed the hearing mission. His Holiness supports basic human values in the interest of human happiness, fosters inter-religious harmony and the preservation of Tibet's Buddhist culture, and promotes a culture of peace and non-violence, all of which match Starkey Hearing Foundation’s values. “Hearing is a very realistic way of touching people immediately. Your hearts are white with kindness.” His Holiness eloquently told us. When His Holiness approached Bill Austin, he pointed to his chest and said you have a “white heart,” showing the mutual admiration of two people who have spent their lives making the world a better place. We were very fortunate to have his presence with us as we provided hearing and promoted understanding to people in India and around the world.

TARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION HAS BEEN GIVING hearing alongside our dedicated team in India for more than a decade.

With so much experience, we’ve become increasingly efficient in providing the gift of hearing to hundreds of people each of the 20 days we were in India.

They were so thrilled with the hearing care they received, they came back to volunteer. They were in tears as they told us the joy the left last year when they returned from the hearing mission in 2015 and they could hear their 8-year-old daughter Manoa.

Our hearts were deeply touched by patient after patient as they showed such sincere gratitude receiving their hearing aids. What also stood out to us was how much appreciation we received. Many patients stood up after being fit and began performing traditional India dances as a way to say “thank you.” By the end of the hearing mission more than 5,000 patients were seen, fitted with hearing aids, provided counseling and made sure they left the mission site feeling good about using their hearing aids. We wish all of them the best with a lifetime of better hearing and look forward to following up with them. It’s always great when we get to revisit with patients, as we were able to with Bhashan and Manoa Raut, a husband and wife whom we fit with hearings at last year’s hearing mission.

TOUCHING SCENE TOOK PLACE DURING THE Nicaragua hearing mission when students from the Melanie Morales school performed a song in sign language for Bill Austin and Starkey Hearing Foundation’s mission team. Students were fit with hearing devices on a mission in Nicaragua last year, and came to the June 6, 2016 mission to receive follow-up after care. To show their appreciation for their hearing health care, the teachers and students spent weeks learning the sign routine of “My Nicaragua” to perform for the Foundation. Mr. Austin checked hearing of students, and reported that students are doing well in school where they are being taught both audible and signing communication. Beyond showing gratitude with the performance, Dulce Man´a Artola, a teacher at the school whose son was one fit in 2015, showed her appreciation by helping translate for our team throughout our Nicaragua hearing mission. “Our hearts were touched by the students’ performance and the gratefulness shown by all involved with the school who joined us on our hearing mission,” Mr. Austin said. “We look forward to hearing more about the children’s progress in the classroom.”

TARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION WAS HONORED TO host the First Lady of Guyana, Sandra Granger, during our hearing mission training in Guyana where we trained hearing health care providers from 14 Caribbean countries and providing more than 60 people with hearing health care and hearing devices. Foundation co-founder, Tani Austin, escorted Mrs. Granger through the hearing mission training site, visiting with patients and explaining our simple, sustainable and scalable WFA® community-based hearing health care model. The visit further solidified the relationship between Starkey Hearing Foundation, Granger, and Guyana’s Ministry of Public Health as they advance the future of hearing health care in Guyana. The relationship and support will allow for many people in need in Guyana and across the Caribbean to receive muchneeded hearing health care and hearing devices, where the World Health Organization estimates more than 2.6 million people have hearing loss. Specifically, this hearing mission training will give providers from Guyana and other countries from the Caribbean the knowledge and skills they need to provide hearing health care in their communities. First Lady Sandra Granger provided hands-on support during the hearing mission, including fitting hearing devices for 10-year-old Daniel, who brought joy to the entire site when he began hearing for the first time.

IAMBA MARIE MUTOMBO HOSPITAL founder, former NBA legend and longtime friend of the Foundation Dikembe Mutombo joined us at the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) hearing mission to share in the joy of patients receiving the gift of hearing. The DRC has a very tumultuous past, yet many conditions continue to improve and optimism reigns with the country’s resilient citizens, which is what brings our team back year after year. In early July, our hearing mission team returned to the DRC to give hearing health care to thousands of people in need in Kinshasa. Mutombo’s words to our team were wonderfully appreciative as he said “I don’t know how much I can express my thanks to Bill, Tani and Starkey Hearing Foundation for the wonderful work you are doing to change lives.” Another friend, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald Jr., accompanied our team in what became his eighth country in which he has traveled with us. As he always does, Fitzgerald showed as much determination in helping patients as he does in his work that makes him an All-Pro receiver. He diligently worked with patients to make sure their hearing aids were providing the sound they needed.

AYS AFTER ALL THE EXCITEMENT OF THE SO THE World May Hear Awards Gala, the mission team embarked on the Foundation’s annual China hearing mission.

China is considered by many to be the world’s oldest continuous human civilization, having a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. Throughout its history, China has seen cycles of prosperity and recession. Looking around the magnificent glass-clad skyscrapers and wide boulevards strewn with modern cars one can wonder whether there is the need for providing hearing health care. The need is great. The conservative estimate of the number of people with hearing loss in the country is staggering. According to Chinese National Bureau of Statistics more than 21 million people have hearing loss. Many of the patients are brought in from adjoining rural areas and, as a result, historically we see quite a wide range of cases from impacted earwax, infections, perforations and foreign bodies that have to be taken care of in the otoscopy station prior to being fit with hearing devices. Our work in China in 2016 was a 13-day hearing mission to the cities of Suzhou, Xuzhou and Suqian. We were greeted each day by the hundreds of smiling faces of people who were incredibly thankful to receive their new hearing devices, knowing the positive affects the ability to hear will have in their lives.

TARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION SET UP A HEARING mission to take place in Lexington, Kentucky all along knowing there would be a looming threat of rain.

Set up took place the days leading up to the mission with no weather problems, and even the morning of the hearing mission, the Kentucky skies remained clear. That is until about an hour before the hearing mission was set to begin. Without much warning, dark clouds rolled in and thunder began rumbling in the distance. As we rushed to get the more than 100 patients inside the gates of Whitaker Bank Ballpark, the hearing mission site, heavy rain began to down pour. Yet as the hearing mission was getting soaked, nobody’s spirits dampened. Instead, the umbrellas came out, patients were moved from station to station, and our team, along with a cast of volunteers, worked to give hearing health care to Kentucky residents in need. University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Calipari came out to the mission along with his entire 2017 team to share in the joy of patients receiving the gift of hearing.

By the end of the day, what had begun as a bit of a chaotic hearing mission to keep patients dry and comfortable, ended with so many of them giving their sincerest thank you for getting hearing care they would have otherwise not received.

N 2014, STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION CONNECTED with the Bayat Foundation, and seeing one another’s efforts to help make the world a better place, the question was asked: Can a hearing mission take place in Afghanistan? The answer was a resounding "yes." Since then, the two foundations have joined together annually to give the gift of hearing to Afghans in need, most recently in August 2016. At the first hearing mission two years prior, we found many of the people were a bit guarded. They were not fully sure what exactly to expect at a hearing mission. However, word has certainly gotten out about our genuine nature of providing the best service possible while also showing them a deep sense of caring. Many who came out to the 2016 hearing mission greeted our team. The Bayat Foundation was critical to facilitate the hearing mission and did whatever was need to provide the best possible hearing care to more than 700 Afghan people. Ehsan Bayat and his incredible wife Fatema Bayat, cofounders of the Bayat Foundation, joined the team on the fitting floor and worked tirelessly throughout the hearing mission with compassion to help us successfully accomplish our task.

Richard Brown, Starkey Hearing Foundation president and board chair, lauds opening of Starkey Institute in Zambia: “How about this statistic: 900,000 to 1,” Brown said.

The idea was to do more than provide hearing health care.

“It’s true. Throughout all of Zambia there is only 1 audiologist who is trained to care for the 900,000 people in need. This story is about a big idea. An unprecedented vision that started with Bill Austin 50 years ago – a vision to bring peace and understanding to the world, through hearing.

The big idea, the vision, was to educate and support people in those very villages and communities on how to give the gift of hearing themselves.

Two years ago, the Starkey Hearing Foundation set out to accomplish something that has never been done. To create a simple, sustainable, and scalable community-based hearing health care program that would not only impact those with hearing loss, but also their communities, countries, continent and the world.

The Starkey Hearing Institute opened its doors in Zambia with the WFA community-based hearing health care program. The First Lady of Zambia Esther Lungu, along with the first lady of the Starkey Hearing Foundation, Tani Austin, cut the ribbon and set in motion an opportunity that will forever change the lives of many.

On May 17th, 2016, the Starkey Hearing Foundation made history.

Partnering with the first and only audiologist in Zambia, Dr. Alfred Mwamba, the first-of-its-kind educational program, was launched to equip students with the knowledge, training and resources needed to advance hearing health care services across Africa. Upon receiving a 1-year education in hearing instrument sciences, accredited by the International Hearing Society, 12 students, representing 9 African countries, will return to their communities to identify and treat people with hearing loss. Their reach will extend well beyond Zambia to include the entire sub-Sahara region where over 36 million people suffer from hearing loss. With the Starkey Hearing Institute in Zambia, and ongoing Starkey Hearing Foundation support, we have charted a course to help more than 2 million people suffering from hearing loss in Africa by 2030. This story is just the beginning – the beginning of a life-giving legacy; the legacy of William F. Austin; a legacy that will continue to change the world by bringing peace and understanding, through hearing.”

STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION has created global academic partnerships across the world who are actively teaching students the WFA® Fitting Method. Representatives from each of those universities was on hand to celebrate at the Starkey Gala. They included: • Utah State University – USA • Long Island Consortium – USA • University of Santo Tomas – Philippines • Amrita University – India • University of Rwanda – Rwanda • University of Nairobi – Kenya

Grant Supports Sanneh Foundation Connecting Children with Each Other

W

HEN A DEVASTATING EARTH QUAKE HIT HAITI in 2010, soccer star Tony Sanneh was playing for the LA Galaxy. Sanneh and a few other team members got together to go down for a relief mission. It was on that mission in Haiti that Sanneh discovered his passion for giving back, and much like Starkey Hearing Foundation, that includes helping in his native Twin Cities community as well as around the world. So it made for an instant connection when Sanneh and his foundation connected with us in 2013. Since then, Starkey Hearing Foundation has been supporting local Sanneh Foundation initiatives. Including most recently in mid-July, when more than 7,500 youth gathered in Saint Paul to take part in soccer camps hosted by the Sanneh Foundation. Starkey Hearing Foundation was thrilled to support a portion of the camps dedicated to the participation of elementary-aged kids who have varying levels of hearing loss. The camps helped the kids discover more about physical fitness by learning to how to play soccer while interacting with young peers who have hearing loss. Our team was happy to visit the camps on July 19. While there, Congresswoman Betty McCollum spoke to the great work that the camps are doing in the community and helped to kick off what would be an exciting day of learning new soccer skills, making new friends and having fun.

One of the things that stood out to us at the camp was the large amount of communication taking place. Whether through audible communication, American Sign Language or very often both at the same time, it was great to see so many children with hearing loss constantly communicating. “It’s all about accommodating the different needs of children,” Sanneh, said. “We work to create an environment that makes them all feel included, which helps them interact. That makes the activities more fun as well as ultimately leads to better learning.”

Larry Fitzgerald sits down for an interview

Firsthand Larry Fitzgerald Catching up With Veteran Foundation Friend

How did you originally connect with Starkey Hearing Foundation? The Austins are my neighbors in the Twin Cities. One day I went over to their home and introduced myself. They invited me to go on a hearing mission to India, and I instantly felt the impact of the mission. When I was out there, I really felt like I was part of the Starkey family.

You’re also a perennial gala attendee, what’s your favorite part about our gala? At most galas I’ve attended, they have highend auction items, like dinner with a famous person, to raise money for their cause. What I like about Starkey’s gala is the high-end items to bid on are to help people around the world. It’s so unique and will keep having me coming back year after year.

What’s driven you to continue to support the Foundation? It’s a combination of things. First off, it’s being there and seeing the effect this work is having for people in need. It’s life-changing, not only for them, but for their family and community. Seeing families able to communicate in a new way, it’s just priceless. Then it’s also the Austin family. The way they open up to me, and inspire me, it’s keeps me coming back every time. What’s it like to give the gift of hearing? It’s great, I really enjoy that aspect of joining hearing missions. Being right there and seeing the immediate change. The other part I like about the hearing missions is how at the end of the day, the team sits down together and shares their incredible experiences. You’ve traveled with the Foundation around the world. Is there any place that stands out? The first hearing mission in India was the most memorable. It was there where I first saw people being opened up to the world of sound and couple firsthand witness that impact. What is it like to work alongside Bill Austin? He makes you feel privileged to be around him. He’s so accomplished himself, and so it shows the dedication he has to go out and make the world a better place. He’s such an inspiration the way he leads by example.

“It’s life-changing, not only for them, but for their family and community. Seeing families able to communicate in a new way, it’s just priceless.” — Larry Fitzgerald
