Stark Library Leadership Team

As I meet with people in the community, the conversation always goes to the importance of the library in people's lives. Often, we're referring to the library building, but a library is so much more than buildings, programs, or books. At its core, a library is a community hub where people connect to people and to information, materials, and resources they need to live, learn, work, and play. Libraries are people. That's why you'll see people reflected in our values and our mission. I'm sure that each of you has a story about a certain librarian or library worker that impacted your life. One of my fondest childhood memories is riding my bike to my local library branch, where I could browse the shelves and find books that would take me into a world of adventure. That foundation created a love of reading and learning, leading me to where I am today. I hope every day we spark curiosity in lives all over Stark County and inspire people to a lifetime of learning. As you'll see in this Explore Guide, 2024 will be a very busy year for us here at the Library. I'm beyond excited about the Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books lineup this season! So far, we've been inspired by Stephanie Land's story and delighted by Sandra Brown, and I can't wait to meet Kate the Chemist, Michelle Williams, and Andrew McCarthy later this year. But that's not all! Make sure you read through this Guide – but what you'll see here is just the tip of the iceberg! Visit your local Stark Library branch and remember to visit our digital branch – our website – to see everything that's happening at the Library. I invite you to explore the possibilities at your Library!

OUR VALUES Respect Inclusion Stewardship Progress

In January 2023, we announced the next phase in our Re|imagine project – expanding our Main Library campus! Even though there is no physical evidence yet, we have been working diligently behind the scenes to plan and design the new Main Library and the Operations Center. We look forward to sharing design plans with you in the near future.

In the upcoming year, we'll put the final Re|imagine touches on the Plain Community Branch, with bright colors, new furnishings, and designs to inspire learning. We will also plan and design the new Southgate Branch of Stark Library – expanding our footprint and reaching even more lives with Library services.

Our community has changed radically since the current Main Library was built in 1978. So, the first step in this project has been to find out what you and the community want and need in our new Main Library.

We will continue to serve the residents of south-central Stark County with expanded bookmobile and outreach services. We're partnering with Stark Parks to plan programming in the Fry Family Park Visitor Center. Our new Library Express service will have lockers where patrons can pick up their books and materials at their convenience 24/7, in addition to WiFi access.

We began the process this year by meeting with library patrons and community leaders to brainstorm what our Main Library can be. We encouraged everyone to dream big! We want to build a Library that brings people downtown to connect and explore. We also met with Library staff to glean their experience as we Re|imagine Main Library. More to come on what we discovered, but we are so excited to see what unfolds.

We are excited to continue serving the community's growing and changing needs.

OUR MISSION We strengthen the community by advancing literacy,

connecting people, and encouraging exploration.

LIZ'S CHAPTER

We just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary and moved into our sixth home together – and Stark Library has been part of that entire journey. At various points, we’ve called Madge Youtz, Downtown, and the North Branch our home base, but we’ve enjoyed visiting the entire Library system at one point or another. I’m a naturally curious person and I’m constantly learning something, so it’s been wonderful to feel that Stark Library always has the resources to help me expand and grow – professionally, personally, and as a parent. The Library has been integral to my career development; I’m a financial advisor and a second-generation owner of Pleasant Wealth. With my Library card, I have access to Libby, which has helped me find audiobooks and ebooks on business concepts and personal productivity. When I

hear a useful title at a conference, I jump on and download it immediately; I almost never have to purchase a hard copy book these days. Through LinkedIn Learning, I’ve discovered helpful human resources videos that I’ve shared with my team at the office – passing on the gift of education and furthering their professional development. And it’s been so convenient to utilize the notary services for our business needs on multiple occasions. We love the physical spaces of Stark Library as well; they’re perfect for connecting with and building rapport with others. My brother, Clinton, and I used a study room downtown to develop a strategic plan for our business, and we’ve reserved North Branch meeting rooms several times to hold workshops on topics like college planning and prepping for retirement. Not only has the Library helped us welcome our clients into a warm and friendly place, but these open-to-the-public offerings have

helped us connect with new members of the Stark community as well. Our experiences were so fantastic that I suggested that the Women’s Impact board, of which I’m a member, begin meeting there as well. Stark Library has played an important part in Nate’s professional trajectory as well. Those study rooms were a quiet sanctuary when he was studying for the GRE en route to getting accepted to an MBA program, and LinkedIn Learning provided the tools he needed to study for a Microsoft certification he needed for his job. To decompress, he’d download some of his favorite non-fiction authors’ audiobooks on hoopla. The Library has been a safe, quiet place for independent exploration and enrichment. There’s literally no end to the ways Stark Library has influenced us over the past 15 years. In fact, I just found out that I can read The Canton Repository on Newsbank with my card – which I’ll be doing next time I go!

Get your library card and play bingo!

Watch Liz and Nate's story at StarkLibrary.org/Liz

Stop by any of our 10 branches today to get your free Stark Library card – or sign up for one online – and turn the page to the next chapter of entertainment, education, and information for wherever you’re at in life! Pick up a bingo card from your nearest branch filled with libraryish activities, complete it to receive a sticker and be entered for a chance to have your story featured!

This Library is everyone’s library. — Roberta Covington, President of FOL

DeHoff Memorial Branch Sounds of laughter and giggles escape the door as you make your way inside. Behind the paned glass door is a big smile waiting to meet you. As you pull open the interior door, bursts of purple, blue, and green seemingly parade across the floor. You approach the counter and find that the big smile is accompanied by laughing eyes that wrap you in a snug and welcome you inside. Here you are not a stranger. Here, you are more than another patron. This, combined with the many useful services, keeps many families returning to the Library. Step into Mrs. Janeka's “classroom” – the enclosed study room. The six homeschoolers and their parents are new patrons and find security and comfort in the study area at the Library. They return every day to learn, participate in programming, and use other services. “We came in on a Monday and since then have been back every day,” says mom. “They told us we were free to use this study room. The kids love participating in the different science 14

experiments. The little ones love the children’s area too!” “I love the touchscreen table,” chimes in Chase. “I love making art with Mr. T,” says Aaliyah. Meanwhile, Dad, Dermaine, is at the copier, printing lessons and worksheets for each of the children.

Journey back nearly twenty years and you’ll find Janice Hamilton walking in Janeka’s shoes. Here she found culturally inclusive reading material as a teacher and a warm environment as a mother. After retiring, she decided to explore her longing love of craft through the knitting club, whose members pack the Library faithfully on Thursday mornings. Janice resembles a child on Christmas morning each time she arrives for knitting.

“This Library has all that you need,” she says smiling as she begins to work on the new stitch pattern assigned to the group. The crafters take joy in affirming one another when learning and or struggling with a new stitch pattern.

“It’s important to me that patrons feel welcomed regardless of the purpose for visiting,” says D’Juana, as she scans the room in awe of the group's collaborating efforts.

The DeHoff Memorial Branch staff welcomes each patron, regardless of their purpose for visiting, with warmth and comfort as if they were guests in their home – because here, there are no strangers.

The group enjoys working together on meaningful projects such as the crochet coral reef and the giving tree, where knitted winter gear is hung on a tree for guests. It’s incredibly fun when the Library Specialist D’Juana, who’s approaching her 24th year at Stark Library, introduces a new stitch.

The constant sounds of delight and laughter are engrained in DeHoff. Branch Manager, Katherine Newcity, loves the uniqueness and closeness of the community, watching children filing into the Library after school, and seeing families returning regularly for programming.
