President’s Message

by John O’Donnell, President, Stark State College If you have noticed our Board of Trustees, our administrators, faculty, staff and students bursting with pride lately, you will certainly understand why after reading this issue of the Stark State Review. There are so many exciting things happening at Stark State College and I am so proud to share them with all of you, our alumni and our community friends.

October 27 was a special day for Stark State College, and the State of Ohio, when we welcomed Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems (US) Inc. as a major player in the economic future of Ohio, and as the charter tenant of our new Fuel Cell Prototyping Center. We have many federal and state partners to thank for over $6.2 million raised in support of fuel cell initiatives on our campus that include the new Center, equipment and curriculum development. In particular, we thank Gov. Bob Taft, Congressman Ralph Regula, Senator Mike DeWine, the Ohio Department of Development, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, the State of Ohio and the Ohio Board of Regents. This facility creates a new incubator for research and development in this community and is part of Gov. Taft’s Third Frontier Initiative for Ohio. As part of that initiative, several research departments from The Timken Company will access an electron microscope from a terminal at Stark State tied to the Ohio SuperCenter and Ohio State University through the Third Frontier Network. See pages 6 and 7 for more information about these exciting new opportunities coming to our community.

This fall, Stark State College, through our business management technology department, collaborated with Kent State University and KSU–Stark Campus, to offer our students who have earned an associate degree in business management, the opportunity to seamlessly transfer to Kent State’s College of Business to complete a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and beyond to their MBA. This is clearly a wonderful option available to Stark State business students interested in a business degree beyond the associate degree. More information about this option is available on page 8.

Each day, more and more companies are recognizing that for some students, the cost of higher education is becoming prohibitive, and these companies are stepping up to the plate by providing scholarships to assist students with the cost of tuition in an effort to encourage fields of study important to their companies. Two new companies to join the ranks of providing scholarships to Stark State students in the engineering technologies and fuel cell technologies are Graco and Lockheed Martin. We thank them and encourage you to read about their generosity on page 9.

And finally, our fall semester enrollment remained strong with the addition of over 670 new students and 9.6% headcount growth. Clearly, our continued growth is fueled by our business and college partnerships, as well as new associate degree programs such as biotechnology, cyber security, technical communications and commercial music technology. By meeting the needs of our students and our community, Stark State College will continue to be recognized as one of the nation’s premier colleges of technology.

Trust Officers and Planned Giving Professionals hosted at College “Education and the Economy” was the topic at the Annual Trust Officers and Planned Giving Professionals Luncheon, hosted by Stark State College and the Stark State Foundation Planned Giving Committee in October.

John O’Donnell, Stark State president, and Ron Wilkof, Stark State Foundation president, welcomed and updated guests on recent events and activities at the College and within the Foundation.

Para Jones, vice president for advancement, planning and college/community relations, shared examples of how Stark State’s educational programs and mission benefit the community through a stronger local economy. She encouraged trust officers and planned giving professionals to discuss opportunities for giving to Stark State with their clients, emphasizing the unique aspects of giving to a two-year college whose mission is so critical to the local economy.

Jones said that national research and local experience indicate that community/technical college benefactors share the following characteristics and interests: > They tend to be entrepreneurs and business owners who have developed successful small- and mediumsized companies involved in manufacturing, technical/industrial and maintenance services.

They value applied learning and technical expertise. > They care about the community and support community/technical colleges because of our economic development mission. > They prefer to support academic programs that align with their own businesses. > They frequently cite the desire “to help students help themselves” as a goal, and they like the fact that our pragmatic, focused associate degree programs lead to immediate, rewarding employment for our graduates. > They are prudent, hardworking people who like the fact that community/technical college tuition is more affordable than other higher education options, and they pride themselves on being “productive philanthropists,” because their donor dollar goes further in educating students.

The Power of Endowment en•dow•ment

Finance an amount of income or property that has been provided to a person or institution, especially an educational institution

In 1993, a scholarship was endowed in memory of a beloved faculty member in the business division, Janet C. Fisher. Initial donations of $24,500 funded the endowment so the memory of Professor Fisher’s work at Stark State could live on through scholarships awarded to qualifying students.

Thirteen years later, that one scholarship has: • Provided scholarships of $475 each to 81 students, totaling $38,447.

• Remains at a current value of $28,836 – more than the original endowment value, plus the $38,447 already awarded in student scholarships.

“That’s the power of endowment,” said Para M. Jones, vice president for advancement, planning and college/community relations, as she addressed more than 50 College benefactors and guests at the Annual Benefactors Luncheon in October. “You can certainly see the value of such an investment for today and tomorrow.”

“We really look forward to this event to thank the many generous individuals, foundations and companies in the region helping our students through scholarships and other assistance,” Jones said, adding that this luncheon and the Student Awards Luncheon in April are important events for the College and the Foundation.

Dr. John O’Donnell, Stark State College president and Ron Wilkof, president of the Stark State Foundation, also thanked and welcomed guests.

Several students personally thanked benefactors for their Kyle Coates support and shared personal examples of how scholarships helped them achieve their academic goals at Stark State, including: Kyle Coates, a freshman from North Canton, majoring in interactive media technology; Theresa Ashley, a freshman from Akron, majoring in early childhood education; Nick Frank, a sophomore from Maximo, majoring in design engineering technology; and Whitney Stoller, a freshman from Sterling, majoring in nursing.

Jones reported that during the 2005-2006 academic year, donors provided $75,000 in scholarship support to 377 Whitney Stoller students through 34 annual and endowed scholarships.

Jones also thanked several faculty at the event for the Faculty Association’s generosity in starting a faculty scholarship endowment with the Stark State Foundation.

A gift of $5,000 endows a Stark State Foundation scholarship.

Timothy Quinnan is new VP for student services and enrollment management Timothy Quinnan, Ph.D., joined Stark State in July as the new vice president for student services and enrollment management. He is responsible for providing leadership and strategic vision within all aspects of student success, overseeing the development of a comprehensive enrollment management plan, developing recruitment and admissions strategies to target diverse populations and promoting collaboration between faculty and staff for the success of the student.

“This is an extremely exciting time to become a part of the leadership team at Stark State,” Quinnan said. Quinnan comes to Stark State from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL where he was vice president for student affairs.

Prior to that, he was associate dean for student affairs and assistant dean for student services at the University of Cincinnati, Raymond Walters College; and registrar of The Union Institute and University, Cincinnati.

Quinnan earned his Ph.D. in higher education at The Union Institute in 1996. He received a master’s degree in college student personnel and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Miami University in Oxford, OH. Quinnan and his wife Lela reside in Jackson Township with their daughter Kristana.

Enrollment increases 9.6%; setting record for seventh consecutive fall semester

Enrollment at Stark State College increased another 9.6% fall semester, setting a record for the seventh consecutive fall semester at Ohio’s largest technical college. College officials attribute the increase to expanded Web-based courses, more scheduling options and market-driven programs.

Fall 2006 headcount figures of 7660 indicate an increase of 9.6% over Fall 2005 headcount figures of 6988 students. These figures reflect official 14th day enrollment numbers provided to the Ohio Board of Regents.

“The College’s sustained growth reflects the community’s recognition of Stark State’s quality and affordability,” said Tim Quinnan, vice president for enrollment management and student services. “Our small class sizes, dedicated faculty, flexible class schedules and a broad selection of degree and certificate programs provide students with rewarding careers in today’s high-demand, high-growth fields.

“E-learning addresses the complex lives of our students, allowing them to learn at their convenience and at their own pace,” Quinnan explained. He added that the College’s five satellite locations “take education out into the communities we serve and provide even more convenience and at the same time provide transportation savings to our students.” Satellite centers are available in Alliance, Carrollton, Downtown Canton, Navarre and Uniontown/Hartville.

Each year, approximately 93 percent of Stark State’s graduates are employed upon graduation “because our degrees are market-driven and meet the needs of our students and area employers,” Quinnan said.

Stark State’s affordable tuition of $127 per semester hour is an advantage for local students and families, as well as the College’s wide range of scholarships and financial aid programs. About 60 percent of all students receive some type of financial aid.

In the past three years, the College has added three buildings with over 90,000 sq. ft. of classroom and laboratory space to accommodate high growth areas in health, automotive and information technologies. Plans call for an additional health and science facility to be built in the next two years.

New associate degrees meet community demand

Stark State College continues to develop new programs to meet the growing demands of business and industry in the northeastern Ohio community. Recent associate degree programs approved by the Ohio Board of Regents include biotechnology, cyber security, technical communications and commercial music technology.

• Biotechnology will provide students with the training necessary to work and thrive in biotechnology/bioscience or other technology-rich industrial or academic-based research laboratories.

• Cyber security majors will learn computer system risk/threat assessment and developing procedures to prevent and react to data and computer-related security breaches.

• Commercial music technology is designed for creative students wishing to develop their performance and/or music technology skills to a high level.

• Technical communications prepares students to write clearly, edit and design technical documents.

Stark State College receives $250,000 job-training grant

Stark State College is one of only three colleges nationwide funded by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to participate in a Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Out-of-School Youth Recovery Program. The competitive federal grant is funded through Congressman Ralph Regula’s subcommittee on labor, health and education.

DOL has awarded $250,000 to Stark State to develop a recovery program for high school dropouts with a team of local partners, which includes the Workforce Initiative Association (WIA), Choices High School, Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG), the Stark County Educational Service Center and Stark Education Partnership. Each of the partners also will provide financial and in-kind resources for the dropout recovery program in Stark County, including $150,000 from WIA.

a proven record of achievement in assisting high school dropouts to earn the high school diploma.

PROVIDE college coursework to motivate and lead to further higher education by giving out-of-school youth the opportunity to earn up to six credit hours of college coursework at Stark State College. Once students are well on their way to the high school diploma, they will begin taking general education courses at Stark State. These courses are transferable to other public colleges and universities in Ohio.

PROVIDE employability and job readiness skills and training through two JOG (Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates) program specialists. The JOG job specialists will work with students during the entire recovery program and will follow up with each student a year after program completion to ensure that he or she is employed and/or enrolled in a college or university.

The Ohio Board of Regents is the portal for distributing funding to the three colleges. “This unique partnership of institutions in three states provides yet another innovative pathway to educate under-prepared students for a more successful future,” said Garrison Walters, interim chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents.

“The Regents staff is pleased to assist Stark State and its partners in this important endeavor.”

The other two colleges funded under this grant are Florida Community College (Jacksonville, FL) and Louisiana Technical College (Baton Rouge, LA).

Under the grants, Stark State and the other colleges will develop pilot projects that will provide a replicable national model that can offer a solution for employment of out-of-school youth and meet the workforce needs of financial services and other career fields. The grants are part of the President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative, a strategic plan to prepare workers for jobs in expanding industries.

The three colleges will serve as core partners in the delivery of educational services, and workforce investment boards will be linked to a new focus and approach to their youth programs.

National business partners in this initiative include Allstate, Bank of America, Citigroup, First Data Corporation, Freddie Mac, JAG, Sallie Mae and JP Morgan Chase.

National City Bank is the local business partner for the Stark County project.

Rolls-Royce Launches U.S. Fuel Cell Business at Stark State College Stark State College is the new headquarters of the Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems (US) Inc., a unit of the majority-

owned Rolls-Royce subsidiary, Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems Limited.

The company announced that it will occupy the new $5 million Fuel Cell

Prototyping Center, constructed earlier this year on Stark State’s campus.

The goal of the new partnership is to commercialize the use of fuel cells leading to economic development in Ohio, according to Stark State and

Rolls-Royce officials present at the October 27 dedication of the Fuel Cell Prototyping Center.

“This is a partnership that truly fits the mission and vision of Stark State

College, one of striving to build business and community partnerships that serve as a catalyst for economic growth in our community and in Ohio,” said Dr. John O’Donnell, president of Stark State College.

“The Fuel Cell Prototyping Center is a prime example of an innovative

public/private partnership involving higher education and business with the goal of supporting the commercialization of fuel cells – an emerging

technology that will contribute to energy independence for our nation and

lead to a promising new industry for Ohio,” O’Donnell added. “We welcome Rolls-Royce in this partnership.”

Ohio Gov. Bob Taft said, “Stark State is one of our great assets; they are

very good at developing partnerships … and this is a partnership that will reap benefits for Ohio.”

Rolls-Royce began research into fuel cell technology in 1992 and in 2003,

established Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems Ltd. Last year, Rolls-Royce

collaborated with Singaporean consortium EnerTek to invest $100 million jointly toward developing a commercially-viable power system based on fuel cell technology.

The company also announced that Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems (US) Inc.

will team with AEP to test and evaluate prototype fuel cell systems at the

Limited said, “This announcement underscores our focus on the future of

fuel cell technology and continues our drive to develop highly efficient, cost

effective and environmentally friendly power systems. Ohio is at the forefront of fuel cell development and demonstrations, and we are delighted to be here working with an industry leader such as AEP.”

Rolls-Royce has also opened a new facility at Loughborough University in the

UK to pilot the production of ceramic components for use in fuel cell systems.

AROUND CAMPUS Stark State and Kent State partner on business degree

A new agreement with Kent State University allows Stark State graduates who earn an associate degree in business management technology to seamlessly transfer to Kent State University to earn a bachelor’s degree in business management. The agreement ensures that all courses required to complete the degree program will be offered on the co-located campuses of Stark State and Kent State Stark.

“This is an important collaborative agreement in Stark County,” said John O’Donnell, president, Stark State College.

“Stark State is extremely excited about the opportunity to partner with Kent State and to offer our associate degree business students a seamless path to continue their education in business. The result will be trained professionals who will bring their business and entrepreneurial skills to the corporations and businesses, large and small, in greater Stark County. This SSCT/KSU partnership will truly be ‘brain gain’ for our community.”

Kent State Stark also offers an MBA allowing students the opportunity to earn their associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business without leaving the co-located campus.

Students may apply for admission to the program as soon as they have fulfilled the prerequisites to take at least one upper-division KSU course.

Requirements include: • completion of 71 semester credit hours at Stark State (associate degree) • 12 hours of “bridge courses” completed at Stark State or Kent State Stark • completion of remaining 45 semester hours of degree requirements through Kent State Stark The agreement between the two institutions also verifies that the degree program meets accreditation requirements for the Kent State University College of Business Administration.

WORTH NOTING Dr. Debra Westerfelt, assistant professor in administrative information technology, presented on “Emotional Intelligence as a Classroom Management Technique” at the Ohio Business Teacher's Association Professional Development Conference in October. She has researched the topic for the past year and presented on techniques she has used in her classroom.

Westerfelt has taught at Stark State for four years, including two years as an adjunct.

She is a member of the executive committee for the Stark State faculty association and is actively involved with SCALP/NALS, a community professional organization for legal assistants.

The August 2006 issue of American School and University, the most respected competition honoring educational interior design excellence, lists the Ralph Regula Wellness and Therapy Center as one of its 2006 “outstanding designs and citation winners.” The magazine cites the Stark State design team, headed by then Vice President for Business and Finance Bob Hallier, for their excellence. The team included Comptroller Dave Johnson, Budget Director Bruce Wyder, Accountant John Jivens and then Director of Facilities, Operations and Maintenance Ron Surmay.

Hallier and Surmay retired in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Congratulations to the team!

Five Stark State faculty were presenters at the biennial regional gathering of the East Central Ohio Mensa Chapter of the American Mensa. Marie Cox, assistant professor of English, presented “That Quiet Space,” a relaxation/meditation session with Taoist and Native American readings. Brian Moore, instructor of human and social services, recounted his adventures in “Traveling with an Airship (Goodyear Blimp) as a crewman. Enyinda Onunwor, interim chair of mathematics and physics, a native of Nigeria, spoke about his transition from Nigeria to the United States.

Catherine Rock, instructor of English and program co-chair of Mensa, presented “The Lurid and Often Gruesome History of the Cimetiere des Innocents and the Paris Catacombs” and “Should I Go to Graduate School?: Things to Consider.”

Barbara Trotter, adjunct instructor of English and coordinator of volunteers at Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, spoke about “Volunteering for Backstage Work at a Community Theater.” American Mensa is a round-table organization (mensa is Spanish for table) for which the sole qualification is an I.Q. in the top 2% of the population as measured by any of a number of standardized tests.

Dr. Linda Spurlock, instructor of sciences and a biological anthropologist who specializes in forensic art and fossil reconstruction, recently served as one of three editors for the publication Caves and Culture: 10,000 years of Ohio History, a collection of the last 40 years of research on Ohio’s caves and rockshelters. Spurlock also joined five of her Stark State colleagues at the recent biennial regional gathering of the East Central Ohio Mensa Chapter of the American Mensa where she was a keynote speaker presenting “Bones, Bats, and Bugs: One Thing Usually Leads to Another” about her career as a biological anthropologist who specializes in forensic art and scientific illustration.

Nichole Oocumma, department chair of dental hygiene, serves as the State of Ohio Education Network Liaison for Dental Hygiene to the American Dental Hygienists Association. She recently published an article in their national newsletter, Education Update, describing changes to Ohio law allowing dental hygienists to administer local anesthetic. Oocumma is a registered dental hygienist and a certified health education specialist. She joined Stark State College in 2004.

Stark State Foundation announces Graco and Lockheed Martin scholarships

Stark State College student Terri Williamson, an administrative information technology major from Massillon, was named to the All-Ohio Academic Team, receiving second-team honors. Williamson was joined by 47 of the state’s best two-year community and technical college students who received All-Ohio Academic Team honors. In recognition of being named to the second-team, Williamson received a medallion, a certificate and a $500 scholarship from Honda of America Mfg., Inc. The All-Ohio Academic Team provides statewide recognition to outstanding two-year college students and opportunities for cash scholarships. The program is sponsored by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC), Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, and Honda of America Mfg., Inc. Students are nominated by their college and must have a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average. Students are selected based on academic performance, demonstration of leadership and community service involvement. J Christy Daugherty, a second-year dental hygiene technology student at Stark State College, received a $1,500 award from the Ohio Dental Association (ODA) Foundation.

Daugherty, a Canton resident, is vice president of her dental hygiene class, works part-time as a dental assistant and volunteers part-time in the Stark State Dental Hygiene Clinic. Daugherty is among 15 students receiving $22,500 in scholarships awarded by the ODA Foundation.

J Pamela Madden, a human and social services technology student at Stark State College, received a $1000 award from the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program. Madden, a Canton resident, is the treasurer for the Stark State chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, president of the Summit Elementary School parent association and a Girl Scout troop leader.

Recipients of the scholarship are nominated by their college and must be active in community service and maintain a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average. The scholarship, created in 2000 and awarded to 400 students annually, was created through a grant from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation. Mr. Whitehead was one of the original bottlers of Coca-Cola.

J Six Stark State College automotive technology students are the recipients of $15,000 in scholarship monies from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA). The Association provides annual scholarships to students who are enrolled in the College’s automotive technology program and who work for a new car dealership in Northeast Ohio. This year’s recipients and their dealerships are: Jason Blasiman, Canton, Lexus of Akron/Canton; Michael McCracken, Akron, Dave Towell Cadillac SAAB; Andrew Hawk Jr., Copley, Serpentini Chevrolet Pontiac/Buick of Orrville; Mitchell Brown, Massillon, Spitzer Chevrolet; Bryan Darlington, Akron, Van Devere Pontiac, and Mark Keen, Uniontown, Schoner Chevrolet. J Deborah Myers, a second-year health information technology student at Stark State College, is one of 16 students nationwide to receive a $1,000 Foundation of Research and Education (FORE) merit scholarship from the American Health Information Management Association. Myers, a resident of Massillon, is the Stark State student officer for the Eastern Ohio Health Information Management Association, a member of Phi Theta Kappa and a volunteer in Aultman Hospital’s medical records office.

Two generous companies, Graco Inc. and Lockheed Martin, have recently donated scholarships to assist Stark State College students enrolled in engineering technology and fuel cell programs, respectively.

The Graco Foundation will provide five $2,000 scholarships to Stark State students enrolled in engineering technology programs, specifically mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, electronic engineering technology, design engineering technology, civil engineering technology, surveying, construction management, architecture, HVAC, industrial technology, environmental engineering technology, and electrical maintenance technology.

“We are so pleased that Graco is willing to provide scholarships to help encourage students pursue engineering technology degrees so they can enter rewarding careers with engineering-oriented companies like Graco,” said Frank Fuller, engineering technology department chair.

Graco is a world leader in fluid handling systems and components with 2,100 employees at global locations, including a major facility in North Canton.

Lockheed Martin’s Stark State College President John O’Donnell Rick Perez, vice accepts a check from Rick Perez, vice president and general president of Lockheed Martin, in support of fuel cell technology scholarships. manager for defense and surveillance systems, recently presented the College with a scholarship donation to provide tuition support for students in the fuel cell curriculum. He and other Lockheed Martin executives toured the College and learned more about Stark State students and programs during their visit.

“We are grateful to Lockheed Martin for their generous support of students enrolled in the new fuel cell curriculum,” said Stark State President John O’Donnell. “And we are fortunate to have a leading-edge technology company like Lockheed Martin in our region and interested in helping students enrolled in an emerging technology program, such as fuel cells.”

Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services. Lockheed Martin also owns Sandia Corporation, which manages Sandia National Laboratories for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

Sandia National Laboratories is a longtime employer of Stark State’s engineering technology graduates.

ALUMNI UPDATE Stark State nursing faculty visit Jordan to assist with review of nursing programs

Four nursing faculty at Stark State College joined a team of 20 U.S. nursing educators to lead a quality review of the country of Jordan’s 22 associate and six baccalaureate nursing programs in November.

The evaluation team was headed by Dean Andrea Lindell, DNSc, of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing.

Lindell served as a consultant to Stark State’s first national accreditation document submitted to the National League of Nursing in 1993. Stark State obtained accreditation for its nursing program on its first attempt. According to Gloria Kline, department chair of Stark State’s nursing program, Lindell has monitored the success of Stark State’s nursing program and felt the Stark State faculty were excellent choices to serve on the Jordan evaluation team.

“This process is just the beginning for Jordan’s nursing programs. Our goal was to encourage them by looking at their strengths and by identifying areas in which they can enhance the framework of their programs,” Kline said.

Also representing Stark State with Kline were Fran Hammerly, associate professor of nursing; Sheryl Stuck, associate professor of nursing, and Mary Dalpiaz, assistant professor of the Nursing Learning Lab. For the last six years, Jordan has been working to improve the quality of its higher education programs in computer science, business administration, law, and accounting and is currently focusing on nursing. The review is sponsored by the Hussein Fund for Excellence. A nonprofit organization supported by Jordan’s banking sector, the fund was established in 1999 to enhance and improve the quality of the country’s higher education among other goals.

The Hussein Fund is working with the Center for Quality Assurance in International Education (CQAIE), based in Washington, D.C., to lead the external review of Jordan’s nursing degree programs.

The CQAIE selected Lindell to head the review citing her experience in United States accreditation, her long-standing leadership at a national level in nursing, and her senior-level experience in the administration at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing.

English Instructor Catherine Rock publishes in prestigious Chaucer Review

Stark State English Instructor Catherine Rock has an educational and work history as rich and fascinating as the medieval times she has been studying for over 20 years.

Rock has bachelor’s degrees in music history and literature, music and French, as well as master’s degrees in English literature, Anglo-Norman French literature and international business.

She has led students through southern France helping to restore medieval castles, studied international business in Paris and had an international auditing internship in Luxembourg.

Rock is also a Ph.D. candidate in English literature at Kent State, where her specialization is Medieval English and French literature.

In the fall of 2005, Rock took a course on the famous Middle English author Geoffrey Chaucer, whose works include the well-known collection of stories, The Canterbury Tales. She wrote a 10-page paper on Arcite, a character in Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale.

Her professor suggested she expand the article to 20 pages and submit it to the Chaucer Review.

Following an extensive double-blind review, several additional reviews and re-writes, Rock received word her article, “Forsworn and Fordone: Arcite as Oath-Breaker in the Knight’s Tale”, had been accepted for publication in the March 2006 Chaucer Review.

“When I opened the acceptance letter I felt like laughing and crying all at once,” Rock said. “Chaucer Review is a prestigious journal, so it's an honor to be published there. I still can't believe it.”

“If I had to choose a motto from the works of Chaucer,” Rock said, “I'd pick a line from the General Prologue that describes the Oxford clerk: ‘Gladly wolde he lerne and gladly teche.’ (‘Gladly would he learn and gladly teach.’)”

“That's how I feel about education: I like to learn new things, and I often learn from my students.

In turn, I teach them what I've learned, so we all benefit, with luck, ‘gladly’.”

Rock has been an adjunct and now full-time instructor at Stark State for five years.

Steve Lautenschleger, ’81, design engineering, has been promoted to manager of Range Integration and Lab Support Department 5432 at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. Lautenschleger joined Sandia’s design definition department in 1981 and was one of the first of nearly 50 Stark State College students recruited by Sandia. Prior to his promotion, Lautenschleger was resident ranger manager for the company’s Kauai test facility in Kauai, HI. In 2000, he returned to Albuquerque to become team supervisor for the aerospace systems development center’s test and assembly lab. He resides in Tijeras, NM with his wife Sharon and their daughter.

Daphne Milan, ’90, accounting, CPA option, was one of 20 finalists for the 2006 Swingline Administrative Professional of the Year. Milan is a resident of Canton where she works at the Community Treatment Correction Center. She is also president of the Canton chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

Terrie Moran, ’04, health information technology, has been promoted to compliance manager of patient financial services for Akron General Medical Center. She had served as a coding technician at the medical center since 2000.

Moran is also pursuing a bachelor’s of science from the University of Toledo and will take her Registered Health Information Administrator certification exam following her graduation in 2008.

She lives in Dover, OH. Rebecca Dunlap, ’06, computer technology, is executive director of Hy-Tek Material Handling, Inc. in Columbus. She currently lives in Pickerington, OH and is engaged to be married in September 2007.

Stark State alum lands new job through College Central Network In 2004, Pamela S. Bossart, a 1990 Stark State computer science graduate employed at The Hoover Company, saw the writing on the wall. Maytag Corporation had purchased Hoover and started moving many of the salaried operations out of its North Canton location. After 21 years at Hoover, Bossart knew her then current position as manager of the Data Center Operations might be in jeopardy.

“Being a Stark State grad, I knew I had job placement for life!” Bossart said. With an eye toward the future, she contacted the Stark State Career Services Office and talked with Patty Meeks, career services specialist. Meeks told her about College Central Network where registered students and alumni may “Being a Stark State grad, I knew I had post resumes and search for jobs, and registered – Pamela S. Bossart, a Plain Township trustee, who also holds a B.S. in computer science from Walsh University, immediately landed an interview with The Timken Company. She knew she was overqualified for the position. “It was my first interview in 21 years and I just wanted the interviewing experience,” she said. The interviewer also knew that she was overqualified. But, one year later, when another position became available, he remembered her, called her for an interview and the rest is history.

Bossart joined The Timken Company as information systems operations principal in July, 2005.

“College Central Network has been a huge success,” said Rita Ridenbaugh, director of career services at Stark State. “Each day we find that more and more employers, alumni and students take advantage of the opportunities it affords them.”

The program began in the fall of 2005. Statistics show the following usage to date: 790 employers have registered, search resumes and posted 746 jobs There are currently 93 active jobs on the College Central Network. In addition, 585 alumni have used the service and 823 students have registered in search of jobs.
