A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

Flower Mound has something for everyone As you may have noticed, Flower Mound is going through an exciting period of growth. With renewed economic development interest in our community, the town has been able to attract the quality growth residents desire and provide additional revenue to the local tax base.

One of these historic projects is Lakeside DFW, a 150-acre development that will change the face of the Lakeside Business District and overlook picturesque Grapevine Lake. The project will include high-quality shopping, dining and office space opportunities along with new neighborhoods all linked by parks, trails and open spaces (More: flower-mound.com/ lakesidedfw). A second development in the works is the River Walk at Central Park, located between FM 2499 and Morriss Roads, north of FM 1171. The River Walk at Central Park is a 158-acre mixed-use development that integrates commercial, office, retail, dining, medical, civic and residential uses in a variety of building types (More: flower-mound.com/ riverwalk). Both of these developments are intended to be enjoyed by both residents and visitors for many years to come. By being able to have projects like this in Flower

Mound, we are able to spend our tax dollars locally and invest in our community. On the west side of town, an exciting new 1,200-acre masterplanned community named Canyon Falls is underway. Tentative plans for the mixed-use residential community include commercial and retail space on the west and northwest part of the property near Interstate-35W. A Flower Mound fire station and a Denton County building are also expected to be located within Canyon Falls. Aside from Flower Mound’s many places to dine and shop (More: livinglocalfm.com/), Flower Mound is widely known for its beautiful landscapes, featured prominently in our approximately 680 acres of parkland and 33 miles of multi-purpose trails. Recognized as a Tree City USA award winner for the past 17 years, it is easy to get away from it all and ride your bike along Grapevine Lake or fish at Rheudasil Pond. I would especially like to recommend our award-winning community built playground, Fort Wildflower, located within Heritage Park (More: flower-mound.com/parks). Built by an

5

amazing group of volunteers in fall 2012, Fort Wildflower is designed for children of all abilities to enjoy comprised of nature and fort themes with local historical flavor for a oneof-a-kind design. If you prefer to do your walking/running indoors, the Flower Mound Community Activity Center (CAC) is the place for you. The CAC offers fitness, group exercise, recreational programs, indoor and outdoor pools, various special events throughout the year and much more. Our Parks and Recreation Division oversees this facility as well as Flower Mound’s many special events throughout the year. We have many family activities during the holiday season starting with our award-winning Pumpkin Dive and ending with the popular Grinch Scramble. Don’t miss our Christmas Parade on Dec. 14 this year and when the weather warms back up again, check for exciting news about our entertainment lineup for the town’s Independence Fest. As always, you can find a complete list of all Flower Mound upcoming events at flower-mound.com/specialevents. With so much to do and see in your own backyard, it’s a great time to be a Flower Mound resident. It is easy to see why CNN Money Magazine ranked Flower Mound No. 32 on the Top 100 “Best Places to Live.”

Post Oak Park in Flower Mound has accurately been described as a rugged wilderness. Located near the intersection of Flower Mound and Skillern roads, the park for years had been not much more than a secluded area of brush, making it hard for residents to access it. But with last spring’s completion of the park’s renovation, the 19-acre park gives residents from the area a variety of things to enjoy. For some, Post Oak Park offers a chance to see types of wildlife not typical for most parts of Flower Mound. Gloria Jones, who lives near the park and walks through there several times a week, said she has seen all sorts of wildlife at the park, including big turtles, roadrunners and in one instance a coyote. She has also seen different bird species, such as blue herons, egrets and cranes. Jones said she also saw beavers at one time before the town trapped them because of the damage they were doing to trees.

“We”re very fortunate,” Jones said of the opportunity to see wildlife at the park. “I hope the wildlife will continue to find us now that things have settled down and the big equipment is gone.”

The wildlife remains because the town was careful not to remove their homes.

community-built playground. Fort Wildflower, a 12,500-square-foot amenity, was built by several members of the community a year ago. Fort Wildflower is divided into two sections. One section is for younger children and includes smaller slides, play houses and other components. Another section is for children a little bit older, and that area includes higher swings, larger slides, etc. The playground also features monkey bars, a fireman’s pole, a cave area and a draw bridge.

“We tried to disturb this area as little as possible and still make it a usable park,” said Clayton Litton, parks superintendent.

pavilion, which is made out of composite material that won’t rot, can be rented for gatherings.

While much of the trees and grass was left alone, the town did bring in new components to the park, such as a crushed granite trail and a concrete trail, which connects to Bluebonnet Trail.

Post Oak Park also includes a newly constructed playground, built with naturebased materials. Amenities include a teeter totter, swings and more.

The nature-themed playground is made from recycled-wood fiber products instead of wood.

“This had been park land for 20 years,” Litton said. “It had just been undeveloped. I think we were able to make it usable and still keep nature involved.”

Phase II is ongoing. Amenities include botanical gardens, a disc golf park, a dog park, a duck pond and additional pedestrian trails.

H E R I TA G E PA R K OF FLOWER MOUND

Also planned are foot paths over a ravine tucked away deep on the park property, just east of the playground.

The trails meander around a pond, where people can get an up-close look by walking down a newly constructed boardwalk. Jones said the park is unique for Flower Mound since others don’t offer the nature as Post Oak Park does. “You’re within the town, but it still feels like you’re in the country,” Jones said. The park also includes an observation deck, the only one in Flower Mound. The

Heritage Park of Flower Mound, located on Spinks Road between Bakersfield and Gerault parks, opened in the fall of 2012. Phase I includes multi-use trails, a pavillion, a pedestrian bridge, restrooms and parking spaces. It also features Fort Wildflower, a

There is also a musical section and a place to play interactive tic-tac-toe.

Phase II is expected to be complete by the summer of 2015.

As the population of senior citizens in Flower Mound continues to grow, so too do the opportunities for them to stay active. Seniors in Motion (SIM), the town’s organization for residents ages 50 and older, consistently brings in new programs to entertain its existing members and to draw in new ones.

and then brings in items to donate to that organization. So far, SIM has donated to the Flower Mound Police Department, as well as Texas Oncology, where seniors took books, snacks, blankets, socks and other items that some of them had knitted for patients who were awaiting chemotherapy.

Some of the events include games and other activities at the Shirley Voirin Social Senior Center. Others include trips to places around North Texas, as well as volunteer opportunities.

“They seem to appreciate it,” said Mary Ennis, president of the SIM advisory board. “Plus, we all enjoy doing those types of things.”

One such program is Random Acts of Kindness. SIM selects a community organization

Another new program SIM has brought in is We Can Learn Together, which began in August.

We Can Learn Together partners SIM with the Youth Action Council, the town’s leadership program for high schoolers. Once a month, members of each group spend two hours learning from each other. During the program’s first day, the students spent and hour teaching the seniors how to use various types of technology, such as iPads. During the next hour, the seniors taught the students how to play games such as Rummikub and Hand and Foot, two games that are frequently played at the senior center. Other new activities to SIM during the last year include more classes. The computer class expanded to include lessons on how to use Facebook, Pinterest, eBay and Craig’s List. There is also a session focused on the top 10 websites for seniors.

Other activities include various games, card stamping, exercise classes, movie and a meal, and pickleball, a sport similar to tennis but at a slower pace.

SIM also offers educational opportunities with seminars on benefits counseling and genealogy.

In fact, games are a big part of life at Seniors in Motion, such as Mexican Train, Texas Hold ‘em and Pinochle. “We play any type of game that you can think of,” Ennis said. “We really like to get into that.”

The current center has one large room for all of its events, but the new one is expected to have multiple rooms.

These activities go along with a host of other events that SIM has offered for years, such as weekly trips. SIM travels to casinos, bingo halls, malls and more.

“You can’t imagine how excited we are,” Ennis said. “Right now, we have three to four activities going on at once in the same room, and it gets pretty noisy. So with the new senior center, we’ll have all kinds of room to do things.”

Jaco-Cooper said the craft activities are also popular, and a knitting group recently started up.

Soon, the SIM program will have more space to have even more activities. The town is beginning work on a new and permanent senior center, which will be located near the intersection of W. Windsor Drive and FM 2499. Construction is expected to begin in January and should be open in early 2015.

SIM has also started a class to teach Mahjong, a tile game, and Euchre, a card game.

There are ensembles for all proficiency levels: preparatory, progressive and symphony.

The Flower Mound Community Orchestras also provide a musical option for a night out. Established in 1994, FMCO is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and instruct musicians in the art of orchestral presentation and to promote education in the community, according to its website. “Our conductors try to find a place for everybody who auditions. Ages in FMCO range from about 10 to 70 years old. The preparatory and progressive ensembles also provide some musical education for the musicians. The Children’s Interactive Concert is the most anticipated event each year, D’Angelo said. At that event, four children from the audience participate in a musical quiz, and the winner gets to direct the orchestra during one piece. The orchestras put on two individual concerts each year, but

brightfuture LAKESIDE DFW | THE RIVER WALK AT CENTRAL PARK CANYON FALLS | SOUTHGATE AT FLOWER MOUND During the last few years, Flower Mound has seen plans for several mixed-use developments in the town be put on hold because of the struggling economy. But the economy appears to be on the upswing, and the amount of dirt turning in Flower Mound these days is proof of that. Flower Mound is moving forward with three mixed-use developments with another that could be proposed soon. LAKESIDE DFW

Lakeside DFW, which will be located near the intersection of FM 2499 and

Lakeside Parkway in south Flower Mound, began construction in April. The 150-acre mixed use development is set to feature shops, restaurants, outdoor dining, offices, parks, trails a specialty grocery store, and an entertainment area, including an amphitheater. Proximity to Grapevine Lake will be one of the project’s top draws for entertainment and dining, project leaders say. The development is also expected to include a mix of residential components, including single-family detached homes,

condominiums, apartments, villas and senior housing. There are also plans for a hotel.

Walk at Central Park, a 158-acre project, situated east of FM 2499, north of FM 1171 and west of Morriss Road.

Phase I is expected to include 180 single-family lots, 30 townhomes, 150 lofts, 180 apartments and 50,000 square feet of commercial under the lofts, as well as three parks, a board walk and an observation deck. Completion date for Phase I is 2014.

The development was approved in 2008, but aside from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, portions of the medical community, Market Street and the Park Central Apartments, construction on the rest of the project had to halt because of financial issues.

For information, go to lakesidedfw.com/. THE RIVER WALK AT C E N T R A L PA R K

Located a few miles north is The River

With Centurion American taking over the property and the project earlier this year, The River Walk appears to be gaining steam again.

Plans for the project include high-end retail and restaurants, various housing options, a river walk amenity, an entertainment district, offices and parks. Results from an election for a public improvement district (PID) in November could impact the rest of the project. Centurion American officials have said that should voters approve the PID for The River Walk, it would free up money to have even more amenities. Those could include artwork throughout the project, a wedding chapel and enhancements to the river walk amenity and the entertainment district. For information, go to facebook.com/RiverwalkFlowerMound. C A N Y O N FA L L S

On the west side of Flower Mound, Canyon Falls is expected to bring more homes, businesses and amenities.

The 1,500-acre mixed-use development is located north of FM 1171, west of Hwy. 377 and east of Interstate 35W, and it will cover parts of Flower Mound, Argyle and Northlake. Project officials broke ground in May.

Canyon Falls is expected to make the surrounding natural setting a theme of the project.

Plans for Canyon Falls include a mix of residential components, including single-family and multi-family, which will mostly be on the east side of the project.

The west side of the project will primarily feature retail, restaurants, a hotel and other mixed-use options.

In between will be a greenbelt that will emphasize the area’s natural feel.

Canyon Falls will also include a new Flower Mound fire station, a Denton County administration building and a school to serve Argyle ISD. There is also a 40-acre park plan in the design. The town approved Canyon Falls plans in 2007, though construction didn’t begin until mid-2013 because of the struggling economy. For information, go to secplanning.com/ canyon-falls. S O U T H G AT E AT F L O W E R M O U N D

Perhaps the fourth development to join the party is Southgate at Flower Mound, a proposed 106-acre mixed-use development that would be located near the FM 2499 and Gerault Road intersection. Plans call for various retail and restaurant options, a mix of residential pieces and 100,000 to 200,000 square feet of office space. Southgate at Flower Mound officials also hope to bring in a four- to six-story hotel with about 150 rooms, as well as a 12,000square-foot conference center. Project leaders tout the proximity to D/FW International Airport, Grapevine Municipal Golf Course and FM 2499 as big advantages for the project. The development is also expected to make use of the natural setting nearby. Ideas include tree and topography preservation, a nature creek, walking paths, water features and a pecan grove. TOWN OF FLOWER MOUND INDEPENDENCE DAY FEST FRIDAY, JULY 4TH

Flower Mound has become the place to celebrate throughout the year, and Independence Fest is one reason why.

In its short history, the annual July 4 event, which takes place at Bakersfield Park, has brought in national music talent, as well as thousands of people to watch them perform. The 2013 event, which was highlighted by a performance from Rick Springfield, drew 20,000 people.

In 2012, Smashmouth headlined the festival, and organizers said about 12,000 people attended. That surpassed the mark of about 10,000 people in 2011, when Grand Funk Railroad performed.

Independence Fest also includes a variety of activities, including a kids zone, an art show, food and vendor booths, a classic car show and more. Each year, the even concludes with a fireworks show.

"Flower Mound has been able to bring in more nationally acclaimed artists, whereas in the past we had more regional bands,” said Chuck Jennings, parks and recreation supervisor. “That, plus word of mouth, has taken this event to a whole new level.”

Independence Fest was born three years ago when organizers decided to combine its Wild About Flower Mound festival, which took place in the spring, with the fireworks show the town sponsored each July 4.

“This is definitely another event where we’ve had a lot of success,” Jennings said. “People enjoy coming out to it, and we’ve had a really good attendance. It’s a special time to for us to celebrate the holidays with so many activities.”

CHRISTMAS PARADE

FRIDAY, DEC. 20 6:30 P.M.

"Combining the two gave us the budget to step it up a notch," Jennings said. “We’ve always had the fireworks, so adding the national acts have really helped.” Jennings said Independence Fest has no signs of slowing down. He said the town is looking into ways to spread the festival out and make use of more parking to bring in even more people. CHRISTMAS EVENTS

While Independence Fest is Flower Mound’s largest event, the Christmas Parade is one of the town’s longest-running activities. Entering its 24th year, the town will host the parade at 10 a.m. Dec. 14. Each year, about 100 floats and entries parade down Morriss Road, accompanied by music and residents dressed in costumes.

Among those is Breakfast With Santa. Each year, children can have breakfast with Santa at the Community Activity Center (CAC). There, children can sit on Santa’s lap and give him their wish list, and they can receive an ornament. Also at the CAC, children can participate in gingerbread house decorating. The center provides the house and the decorating items, and the cost is based on the number of houses that are decorated. And those looking for a challenge can participate in the Grinch Scramble. Children and their families spend an evening looking through candy canes scattered throughout Gerault Park while also being on the lookout for the Grinch. Whoever finds him wins a grand prize. EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE

The longest-running event in Flower Mound is the Easter Sunrise Service on The Mound, which is hosted by The Summit Club and The Women of Flower Mound. The event began in 1971 and takes place on The Flower Mound, located at the northeast intersection of FM 3040 and FM 2499. More than 1,000 worshipers from across the area attend the event each year to hear a spiritual message.

PUMPKIN DIVE

1-2 P.M. OCT. 19 V E T E R A N S D AY

Each year, the town hosts a Veterans Day ceremony at Flower Mound High School. The event begins with a hot dog lunch, provided by The Summit Club, for those in attendance. The ceremony follows and includes the Veterans Review, where members of local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and high school ROTC parade in front of the veterans. The event also includes a speech by a local veteran and musical performances by the Voices of Flower Mound. PUMPKIN DIVE

The CAC also hosts a pumpkin dive each October. Children dive for pumpkins in the indoor pool and then decorate it with supplies provided by the CAC. ■ CHRIS ROARK croark@starlocalnews.com

The indoor pool is an 11-lane, 25-meter by 25yard pool that is great for swim teams, open swim, lap swimmers, and programs such as aqua fitness classes, group lessons, and one-on-one sessions with our aquatic staff. The indoor pool stays at a comfortable 83 degrees. It also features a splash pad, 150-foot slide, and 1-meter diving board. Open lap swim is available to all CAC members and nonmembers with paid admission to the facility. During specific hours of operation, lanes will be set up for patrons to enjoy their own workouts. These lanes are reserved for patrons swimming laps only and are not to be used for general open swim. Lanes vary due to rentals and programming.

The outdoor water park includes two large water slides, three 25-yardlanes, a 60-gallon dumping bucket, a concession stand, interactive water features, a lazy river, shade structures, a vortex, a water play structure and zero-depth activity pool with three tot slides. The CAC has a concession stand open during the operating hours of the outdoor water park with a full menu to choose from. The CAC is an authorized provider of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program. The CAC enforces age requirements based on American Red Cross standards and for the safety of your child. Lesson assessments give parents a chance to bring their child in to be skill tested by one of our qualified water safety instructors. The staff will evaluate the proper level placement and give parents a recommendation for level placement. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level, but this cannot be guaranteed. Individuals who hold a certification card from the American Red Cross do not need to attend a lesson assessment. Swim lessons are 30 minutes in length and available for all skill levels ages 3 to adult. Classes are held outside of normal group lesson times and are set up between the student and aquatic staff. For more information regarding private lessons, contact the aquatics office. Patrons are responsible for arranging semi-private participants. The CAC also offers more than 10 water aerobic classes weekly. Space is available on a first come first served basis. Participants must check in at the front desk 5 – 60 minutes prior to the start of the class. Aqua Lite is a less intense, fun water workout that promotes optimum joint flexibility, muscle coordination, and overall health. These fun classes are designed to improve your car-

dio endurance with a variety of methods and water equipment. You will also work on muscle conditioning, balance, and range of motion. The H2O Fit class is designed to improve strength, range of motion, and muscle conditioning. The Deep Water Aerobics class is a non-impact workout in deep water wearing a belt that creates natural buoyancy, which allows you to work muscles against water’s resistance. The results are increased strength, flexibility, and muscular endurance. River Robics, a seasonal class, gets various movements going with and against the current of the Lazy River will offer a cardio challenge to increase stamina while toning the larger muscle groups. Water equipment may

be utilized in some segments. Outside the pool, the CAC offers other fitness classes and has a variety of workout equipment. It also includes a gymnasium with two full-size hardwood basketball courts for sports and classes. Residents can also rent out rooms at the CAC for a variety of activities and parties. TWIN COVES PARK UNCOVERS

a ‘hidden gem’

Flower Mound has a prime spot for fishing, camping and playing, and town leaders once said it would be a shame for it to go to waste. That's why Twin Coves Park is getting a makeover. Located on the north shore of Grapevine Lake and west of Murrell Park, the 234acre park will soon be what many expect to be a regional draw for outdoor enthusiasts.

In 2010, the town entered into a 25-year lease agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Since then, the town has spent about $500,000 on park renovations, including repairing a road into the park,

restroom upgrades and general cleanup. The town will also repair boat ramps to the lake with help from a matching grant. For now, however, the location is somewhat of a secret. “I think it’s a hidden gem,” said Gary Sims, the town’s executive director of community services. “Not a lot of people are aware of what Twin Coves Park is and what will be available at the park.” Those who have heard of it are excited, Sims said. The town has a guide on what is likely to come next after officials were updated on

the results of the park’s feasibility study.

that came from the study.

Plans call for the park to include 20 cabins and 25 RV slips with utility upgrades for 50-amp electrical and water/wastewater hookup sites for the RV slips.

Sims said all of the amenities are subject to approval by the Corps of Engineers. But he added that he doesn’t anticipate there being any problems.

The town is looking into the option of organized tent camping as long as it’s separate from the cabin and RV area.

“People who use the ramp for access are excited,” Sims said. “We’re hearing a lot of interest from people who want to bring their RVs to the town. And people are already calling us asking when the cabins are going to be ready. Word is getting out, and it will have more momentum when once we start talking about the design plans.”

Twin Coves is also expected to include a variety of amenities, such as three large pavilions to hold 50 people or more, a nine-hole disc golf course, a sand volleyball court and opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, bicycling and fishing. A concession building and a playground were other recommendations
