HE COMPLETED THE FESTMUSIK DER STADT WIEN ON JANUARY 14, 1943, WHILE WINTERING IN VIENNA (WIEN). THE LEADER OF THE TROMPETENKORPS DER STADT WIEN ASKED HIM TO COMPOSE A WORK FOR THEM.

IN 1978, THE SCORE OF RADETZKY MARSCH WAS DISCOVERED AT ITS ORIGINAL PRINTING WORKS IN VIENNA. ON EASTER SUNDAY 1979, JULIUS RUDEL CONDUCTED MEMBERS OF THE VIENNA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN PERFORMANCE. TO THIS DAY, RADETZKY MARSCH REMAINS A SIGNATURE ENCORE AT THE VIENNA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNUAL “NEW YEAR’S EVE CONCERT”.

THE THIRD AND MOST FAMOUS MOVEMENT OF SUITE BERGAMASQUE IS CLAIR DE LUNE, IN Db MAJOR. ITS NAME COMES FROM VERLAINE’S POEM “CLAIR DE LUNE”, WHICH MEANS “MOONLIGHT” IN FRENCH. IT IS WRITTEN IN A SLOW 9/8 METER AND USES VERY SOFT DYNAMICS MOSTLY. THE ARRANGEMENT FOR WIND BANDS ADDS MORE COLORS TO THE ORIGINAL PIANO PIECE, WHILE THE FLOWING HARMONIC ARPEGGIOS ARE EXPRESSED WITHIN THE WOODWIND SECTION. CONDUCTORS SHOULD TAKE THEIR TIME TO STUDY THE CHANGING RUBATO TEMPOS, THAT ARE SO CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS IMPRESSIONISTIC MASTERWORK.

IT WAS COMPOSED IN 1909 AT THE REQUEST OF THAT SOCIETY, WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN JERUSALEM DURING THE FIRST CRUSADE. ORIGINALLY WRITTEN FOR BRASS ENSEMBLE, STRAUSS LATER SCORED IT FOR FULL ORCHESTRA.

BY WIL VAN DER BEEK CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862 1918) HAS CREATED THIS SERIES OF 6 PIECES FOR HIS LITTLE DAUGHTER, BUT IT IS CLEAR THAT ALL OF THEM WERE ACTUALLY MEANT FOR ADULTS. “GOLLIWOG’S CAKEWALK” IS THE LAST OF THE SIX PIECES AND IS ABOUT A NEGRO DOLL THAT DANCES THE CAKEWALK. DEBUSSY CHOOSES A CHEERFUL JAZZ-LIKE THEME (RAGTIME) AND COMBINES IT WITH THE MELANCHOLIC SO-CALLED TRISTAN CHORD BY RICHARD WAGNER, WHICH MAKES THE PIECE WORK AS A PARODY.

THE PIECE IS FULL OF SYNCOPATION AND BANJO-LIKE EFFECTS AND LARGE DYNAMIC DIFFERENCES, WHICH WORK VERY EFFECTIVELY.

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE ZARZUELAS THAT BRETÓN COMPOSED, WHICH WERE MORE SUCCESSFUL.

IN THE INTERIM BRAHMS HAD WRITTEN SOME OF HIS GREATEST WORKS, INCLUDING THE VIOLIN CONCERTO, TWO OVERTURES (TRAGIC OVERTURE AND ACADEMIC FESTIVAL OVERTURE), AND PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2.

THIS WORK BELONGS TO THE STANDARD REPERTOIRE OF ANY SELF-RESPECTING CLARINETIST. UNDOUBTEDLY, THERE ARE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THIS ADAGIO (THE SECOND MOVEMENT OF THIS THREE-MOVEMENT CONCERTO) AND THE SECOND MOVEMENT (ALSO ADAGIO) OF THE FAMOUS CLARINET CONCERTO BY W. A. MOZART (E.G., IN TUNING AND MELODY DELIVERY).

THE CONDUCTOR SHOULD STRIVE TO ACHIEVE AN OVERALL LIGHT AND FRESH STYLE OF EXECUTION AND BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE BALANCE. SUPPÉ’S USE OF «BLOCK DYNAMICS» HAS BEEN RESPECTED BUT THE MARKINGS WERE SLIGHTLY REVIEWED FOR THE SAME REASONS EXPLAINED ABOVE. THE PERCUSSION SECTION HAS BEEN ENHANCED, BUT REMAINS FAIRLY FAITHFUL TO THE ORIGINAL SCORING.

THE TEMPO MARKINGS AND CHARACTER INDICATIONS ARE ALSO ORIGINAL, WITH AN EXCEPTION OF THAT OF THE FINAL MARCH, MARKED HERE QUARTER NOTE 132, INSTEAD OF QUARTER NOTE 144, TO FAVOUR CLARITY OF EXECUTION.

BY GUSTAV HOLST / ARR. BY JAN BOSVELD IN THE MIDDLE OF COMPOSING THE PLANETS, GUSTAV HOLST WROTE JAPANESE SUITE AT THE REQUEST OF A JAPANESE DANCER NAMED MICHIO ITO. ITO WAS APPEARING AT THE LONDON COLISEUM AND WANTED TO DANCE TO A WORK DERIVED FROM TRADITIONAL JAPANESE TUNES. HOLST DIDN’T KNOW ANY TUNES, SO ITO ACTUALLY HAD TO WHISTLE SEVERAL TO HIM.

THE SPANISH COMPOSER AND PIANIST ISAAC ALBENIZ (1860 – 1909) STRONGLY INFLUENCED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SPANISH “NATIONAL” SCHOOL OF COMPOSITION AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY. ONE OF HIS BEST-KNOWN PIANO COMPOSITIONS IS THE SUITE “ESPANOLA”, A COLLECTION OF PIECES INSPIRED BY DIFFERENT REGIONS AND MUSICAL CULTURES IN SPAIN. “CASTILLA” (THE 7TH MOVEMENT IN THIS SUITE) IS COMPOSED IN THE SEGUIDILLA STYLE, WHOSE ORIGINS LIE IN A CASTILLIAN FOLK DANCE.

BY DIANA MOLS FELIX MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847) | RUY BLAS, OPUS 95 (1839) THIS OVERTURE IS THE RESULT OF A REQUEST TO MENDELSSOHN FROM THE LEIPZIG THEATRICAL PENSION FUND, A CHARITY THAT MENDELSSOHN LIKED TO SUPPORT. THEY INTENDED TO MOUNT A BENEFIT PERFORMANCE OF VICTOR HUGO’S ‘RUY BLAS’, AND ASKED HIM FOR AN OVERTURE AND A SONG FOR THE PRODUCTION. MENDELSSOHN OBLIGED WITH A CHORAL SONG, BUT INITIALLY DEMURRED AS TO THE OVERTURE; HAVING READ THE PLAY HE PRIVATELY DECIDED THAT IT WAS “QUITE GHASTLY” AND POLITELY TOLD THE PENSION FUND PEOPLE THAT HE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO WRITE AN OVERTURE.

ITS DIFFICULTY IS THEREFORE NOT TOO HIGH; HOWEVER, IT IS FAR FROM BEING A “CHILDISH” COMPOSITION.

WHEN LISTENING TO THIS PIECE, IT IS NOT DIFFICULT TO PICTURE A SHEPHERD TENDING HIS FLOCK, LEADING THEM TO THE BEST PASTURES, AND LOOKING FOR A REFRESHING BROOK. THE STARTING POINT FOR THIS ARRANGEMENT WAS THE ORCHESTRATION BY JOSEPH CANTELOUBE, A FRENCH COMPOSER AND FOLK MUSIC COLLECTOR (1879 – 1957).
