SYMPHONY NO. 3

BY JOHANNES BRAHMS / ARR. BY DIANA MOLS

THE SYMPHONY NO. 3 IN F MAJOR, OP. 90, IS A SYMPHONY BY JOHANNES BRAHMS. THE WORK WAS WRITTEN IN THE SUMMER OF 1883 AT WIESBADEN, NEARLY SIX YEARS AFTER HE COMPLETED HIS SYMPHONY NO. 2. IN THE INTERIM BRAHMS HAD WRITTEN SOME OF HIS GREATEST WORKS, INCLUDING THE VIOLIN CONCERTO, TWO OVERTURES (TRAGIC OVERTURE AND ACADEMIC FESTIVAL OVERTURE), AND PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2.

DURATION 5:30

Adagio

BY CARL MARIA VON WEBER / ARR. BY WIL VAN DER BEEK THE GERMAN CARL MARIA VON WEBER (1786 – 1826) COMPOSED HIS CLARINET CONCERTO NO. 1 IN F MINOR (OPUS 73) FOR THE THEN FAMOUS CLARINETIST HEINRICH BÄRMANN IN 1811. THIS WORK BELONGS TO THE STANDARD REPERTOIRE OF ANY SELF-RESPECTING CLARINETIST. UNDOUBTEDLY, THERE ARE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THIS ADAGIO (THE SECOND MOVEMENT OF THIS THREE-MOVEMENT CONCERTO) AND THE SECOND MOVEMENT (ALSO ADAGIO) OF THE FAMOUS CLARINET CONCERTO BY W. A. MOZART (E.G., IN TUNING AND MELODY DELIVERY).

Isabella

BY FRANZ VON SUPPÉ / ARR. BY MIGUEL ETCHEGONCELAY

FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS TRANSCRIPTION, SOME SLIGHT CHANGES IN THE ARTICULATION SIGNS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED IN ORDER TO MAKE THE MUSIC MORE SUITABLE FOR THE WIND BAND. THE CONDUCTOR SHOULD STRIVE TO ACHIEVE AN OVERALL LIGHT AND FRESH STYLE OF EXECUTION AND BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE BALANCE. SUPPÉ’S USE OF «BLOCK DYNAMICS» HAS BEEN RESPECTED BUT THE MARKINGS WERE SLIGHTLY REVIEWED FOR THE SAME REASONS EXPLAINED ABOVE. THE PERCUSSION SECTION HAS BEEN ENHANCED, BUT REMAINS FAIRLY FAITHFUL TO THE ORIGINAL SCORING.

THE TEMPO MARKINGS AND CHARACTER INDICATIONS ARE ALSO ORIGINAL, WITH AN EXCEPTION OF THAT OF THE FINAL MARCH, MARKED HERE QUARTER NOTE 132, INSTEAD OF QUARTER NOTE 144, TO FAVOUR CLARITY OF EXECUTION.

JAPANESE SUITE

BY GUSTAV HOLST / ARR. BY JAN BOSVELD IN THE MIDDLE OF COMPOSING THE PLANETS, GUSTAV HOLST WROTE JAPANESE SUITE AT THE REQUEST OF A JAPANESE DANCER NAMED MICHIO ITO. ITO WAS APPEARING AT THE LONDON COLISEUM AND WANTED TO DANCE TO A WORK DERIVED FROM TRADITIONAL JAPANESE TUNES. HOLST DIDN’T KNOW ANY TUNES, SO ITO ACTUALLY HAD TO WHISTLE SEVERAL TO HIM.

DURATION 10:30

THE SPANISH COMPOSER AND PIANIST ISAAC ALBENIZ (1860 – 1909) STRONGLY INFLUENCED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SPANISH “NATIONAL” SCHOOL OF COMPOSITION AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY. ONE OF HIS BEST-KNOWN PIANO COMPOSITIONS IS THE SUITE “ESPANOLA”, A COLLECTION OF PIECES INSPIRED BY DIFFERENT REGIONS AND MUSICAL CULTURES IN SPAIN. “CASTILLA” (THE 7TH MOVEMENT IN THIS SUITE) IS COMPOSED IN THE SEGUIDILLA STYLE, WHOSE ORIGINS LIE IN A CASTILLIAN FOLK DANCE.

Der Opernball

BY RICHARD HEUBERGER / ARR. BY WIL VAN DER BEEK THE OVERTURE “DER OPERNBALL” IS NOT A SIMPLE SEQUENCE OF OPERETTA FRAGMENTS. IT IS SPARKLING AND CERTAINLY HAS A REFINED LEVEL, WITH THE IRRESISTIBLE WALTZ “GEHEN WIR INS CHAMBRE SÉPARÉE” POSSIBLY AS THE HIGHLIGHT. ALSO WORTH MENTIONING IS A “CINDERELLA-LIKE” MIDNIGHT MOMENT (BAR 264) AND AN APPEALING GALLOP TO FINISH.

HUNGARIAN DANCE NO. 1

BY JOHANNES BRAHMS / ARR. BY WIL VAN DER BEEK

HUNGARIAN DANCE NO.1 IS IN 2/4 TIME (AS ARE ALL 21 HUNGARIAN DANCES!), IS RICH IN SYNCOPATION, AND HAS A FAST TEMPO; TYPICAL IS THE SUDDEN STOP VIA AN UNEXPECTED FERMATA, AFTER WHICH A FAST TEMPO IS RESUMED (BAR 88), AN APPROACH THAT OCCURS MORE OFTEN IN THESE 21 DANCES.

Overture Ruy Blas

BY FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY / ARR. BY DIANA MOLS FELIX MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847) | RUY BLAS, OPUS 95 (1839) THIS OVERTURE IS THE RESULT OF A REQUEST TO MENDELSSOHN FROM THE LEIPZIG THEATRICAL PENSION FUND, A CHARITY THAT MENDELSSOHN LIKED TO SUPPORT. THEY INTENDED TO MOUNT A BENEFIT PERFORMANCE OF VICTOR HUGO’S ‘RUY BLAS’, AND ASKED HIM FOR AN OVERTURE AND A SONG FOR THE PRODUCTION. MENDELSSOHN OBLIGED WITH A CHORAL SONG, BUT INITIALLY DEMURRED AS TO THE OVERTURE; HAVING READ THE PLAY HE PRIVATELY DECIDED THAT IT WAS “QUITE GHASTLY” AND POLITELY TOLD THE PENSION FUND PEOPLE THAT HE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO WRITE AN OVERTURE.

BY DIANA MOLS COCKAIGNE (IN LONDON TOWN), OP. 40, ALSO KNOWN AS THE COCKAIGNE OVERTURE, IS A CONCERT OVERTURE FOR FULL ORCHESTRA COMPOSED BY THE BRITISH COMPOSER EDWARD ELGAR IN 1900-01. IN ITS 15 MINUTES OR SO THE OVERTURE GIVES A LIVELY AND COLOURFUL MUSICAL PORTRAIT OF EDWARDIAN LONDON. ‘COCKAIGNE’ WAS A TERM USED BY MORALISTS AT THAT TIME AS A METAPHOR FOR GLUTTONY AND DRUNKENNESS, WHILE BRITAIN ADOPTED THE NAME HUMOROUSLY FOR LONDON.
