Big rodeo planned for first PRCA in state this year

The Colorama Rodeo will open Friday as a Professional Cowboy Rodeo Association event for the first time. With 219 contestants registered for all the regular rodeo contests, the event looks to provide plenty to help rodeo fans who missed no rodeo last year due to Covid restrictions. Among those professionals coming to compete is Shane Proctor, a world champion bull rider and pro cowboy originally from Grand Coulee. Rodeo fans will also see Shane’s wife Haley, who is a national rodeo attraction of a different kind — a professional trick rider whose skills placed her on the cover of this section. And a guy with a pet bull is sure to be entertaining. Whistle Nut and Ole might make you a little nervous, but they perform in rodeos all over the country. Ridge Riders President George Kohout said the rodeo is the first of the year in the state of Washington for the PRCA, and cowboys are eager.

They look like clowns, but those silly clothes just help rodeo bull fighters, like this one at Colorama in 2017, to draw the attention of a bull that would otherwise aim its wrath at downed cowboy. — Scott Hunter photo

So are fans, evidently. Kohout told chamber of commerce members at their luncheon last week that he understood pre-ticket sales normally bring in about $800, but

this year had already hit $4,200. That difference includes a price increase from $12 for adults in 2019 to $20 this year to reflect the club’s investment in jumping to PRCA.

Kid Zone stationed at the upper ballfield offers variety of fun

The Colorama Kids Festival Zone will give kids the opportunity to ride a blow-up mechanical bull, ride a 34-foot long slide, and more. The activities will be staged at North Dam Park’s upper baseball field on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8, from 12-8 p.m., and on Sunday, May 9 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The activities are provided by All-Star Jump, a rental company out of Spokane and include a four-station bungee trampoline, a blow-up mechanical bull, a tram-

poline game called “aeroball,” a 34-foot slide, football tug-n-pull, baseball blast, something called “toxic meltdown,” pony hops, and carnival games. “We are so excited about the activities they are bringing,” Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rachelle Haven said. More details on the activities can be found at https://www.all-

starjump.com/ Regarding COVID-19 safety precautions, Haven said, “We will be having a gated entrance to check all kids in, taking tem-

peratures, requiring masks (for appropriate ages) & socks.” She said they’ll have hand sanitizer stations at all activities, and will be wiping down each station.

Tickets for kids zone:

Half Day Pass (Sunday Only): $25 Day Pass (Friday or Saturday): $40 Weekend Pass (All 3 Days): $75 Single Ride Tickets (only available at gate): $5

Beer garden to host live music Adults will be able to enjoy a frosty brew and some tunes at the beer garden, which will be stationed at North Dam Park’s tennis courts. The beer garden, which opens at about 2 p.m., will have a mixture of beers on tap, a slushie machine, jello shots, seltzers, and wine. At 10 a.m. on Sunday, Mothers Day, the garden will have “Momosas” (mimosa’s) with a variety of flavors. On Friday at 7 p.m., Spokanebased rock band Chris Reiser and The Nerve will perform their “180 proof rock” music as described on their Facebook page. You can preview some of their music at https://www.reverbnation.com/chrisrieserandthenerv e?fbclid=IwAR0BN3t6zvr4Cpu fWrElVLlC2dmXqdsEsnvkJZn EK_Ycb7B2i4cFvux1HgU. Then on Saturday, popular local rock band LoveStitch will perform at 7 p.m.

Helicopter rides to be offered during Colorama

You can take a ride in a helicopter and see the beauty of the Coulee the way the birds do! Inland Helicopter will be stationed at the lower baseball field of North Dam Park and offer helicopter rides for $50 a person, and up to three can ride at a time for approximately 15 minutes. Riding in a chopper over the area can give the rider a completely different perspective, and the rides have been a popular addition to most Colorama festivals since at least 2013.

Pre-registering people get t-shirts, but t-shirts won’t be available for those registering the day of the run. Runners will get covered with colored powder throughout the entire run, at different color stations. The race is a 5k and lasts up to an hour, depending on the experience of the runner (or walker).
