Carnival returns with favorite rides

Rainier Amusements returns this year for another great showing. “These are the folks we love and we’re thrilled to have a multiyear contract with,” noted Peggy Nevsimal, executive director of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. This year’s hours of operation are: • Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m. • Friday, 4 to 9 p.m. • Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

They have 9 p.m. as their planned closing time, and they will stay open until then, even in inclement weather. But they will stay open much later if the weather cooperates. The weather forecast looks very favorable for Colorama 2019. If you get tickets before Thursday at any of several businesses around town, they cost $20, but at the gate tickets will be $30. Unlike some carnivals in years past, tickets are good all day, so customers don’t have to pick a specific block of time to go. Presale tickets are on sale at: CDFCU, Coulee Hardware, H&H, Loepps, Nespelem Trading Post, The Star, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Colorama 2019 - 3

Colorama parade begins at 11 a.m.

Once again, everyone’s favorite parade will be winding its way down Federal Avenue and Midway Avenue, and locals in the know have got their favorite spots picked out along that route. The parade starts at 11 a.m. Those participating in the parade need to check in at the information table in front of Les Schwab (Spokane Way & Federal Way) at 9:30. Trophies are awarded in 10 different categories. Last minute folks who still haven’t turned in an entry form can find one at www.grandcouleedam. org/parade and should bring it to the check-in table with them. The Colorama parade is eclectic, to say the least. Not only does it usually offer school marching bands and great floats, but some of the most original single entries, some quite offbeat. See you there, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen.

All those arts, crafts and more Having more than doubled in size over the last several years, the vendor fair at North Dam Park is one of the most anticipated parts of the Colorama Festival, with some people planning to check back with the visiting vendors to see if they can stock up on their favorite items, be those culinary specialties, bath soap or dozens of other items.

The arts and crafts area is open this year during these times: Friday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sunday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

This year, as of Friday, some 54 sites had been rented to 39 vendors.

Inflatable fun is back

An addition to Colorama this year will be vendors offering “inflatables” and bounce houses for the younger crowd. Such attractions were popular with the 12-and-under set one year when no carnival was available, and the chamber of commerce has sought a way to bring them back, with success this year. Northwest Inflatables, of Idaho, will be here with Zorb Balls (looks fun) and bounce houses.

Tickets are $1 each and available at Loepps.

Rodeo ready for buckin’ The Ridge Riders Saddle Club and volunteers and associates have been busy preparing for the 63rd annual Colorama ProWest Rodeo this weekend, beginning Friday night and continuing Saturday. If you’ve seen the big screen TV glaring pictures on Midway Avenue, you’ve gotten a preview of the instant replay screen that will again be featured at the rodeo, with cable TV broadcasts to follow later. The big screen is underwritten in part by the Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union, Ridge Riders President George Kohout said. The television production outfit will be shooting all the regular rodeo events, including breakaway and tie-down and team roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding, saddle and

bareback broncs, ranch saddle broncs and barrel races. A final count wasn’t available Tuesday, but the event last year drew about 180 contestants from Nevada to British Columbia. Kohout said world champion ranch saddle bronc rider Tavis Youtze is among those registered to compete this year. The Skagit Rein Riders will be back with their precision riding by a dozen ladies that’s an impressive sight. The arena has been getting an electrical upgrade this week to its east end, and Kohout said the arena on Tuesday was nearly “in shape for buckin’.’” McMillan Bros. will again provide the stock for the rodeo.

Instant replay screen will once again be featured at the rodeo.

Mutton busters wanted Stick horse racers too

Any parents of potential champion mutton busters (who ride sheep into the arena), 5 years old or more (or 70 pounds or less), should get registered

sooner than later because only 10 slots are available in each performance, Friday and Saturday. To enter, you can call Cindy at Loepps at 633-0430. Entry fee is $15. If your child is entered, be sure

they have a helmet (bike helmet will do) and be prepared to either congratulate or console your brave contestant. Stick horse racers can enter at the event, which starts at the beginning of each rodeo.

Colorama Rodeo Queen Cassidy Meng has been riding horses since she was a small child, began competing in barrel racing in 2014 and enjoys junior rodeo, 4-H, posse shows and more. The high school senior says dealing with horses has taught her how to handle the unexpected. “The best thing to do,” she said at a local chamber of commerce meeting this year, “is to remain calm.” She’ll have plenty of practice handling the unexpected as the 2019 Colorama rodeo queen, a role that has her representing the local rodeo and the Ridge Riders at events all over the region. The 17-year-old queen is the daughter of Heather and Chris Meng, of Moses Lake, where she attends Moses Lake High School and the Columbia Basin Technical Center. She was selected as this year’s queen by a committee of the Ridge Riders Saddle Club in October 2018. “Riding has always been important in my life,” she says. “I love riding and competing in events with my horse, Rum.” She and Rum compete in WAHSET, junior rodeo, and Barrel Club events, with her favorite, she says, being keyhole. But it’s not all competition. Long rides with her family are another love of hers. “I am honored to be given the opportunity of representing the sport of rodeo and the Coulee Dam area as Miss Colorama Rodeo 2019,” she says.

Run offers good way to get Colorama-ized Now in its third year, the 5K Color Run will start and finish in Banks Lake Park. that’s the park to the south of the road going across North Dam. The race starts at 9 a.m. The course winds through Banks Lake and North Dam Parks (on the north side of the road across North Dam), including across the top of North Dam, then along the canal, around the grain elevators near the hospital, through the woods, past the baseball fields and tennis courts, and through the vendor fair, then back to Banks Lake Park. Last year, 137 people took part in this race. Pre-registration is $20 at www. grandcouleedam.org/colorrun. But on the morning of the run the registration fee goes up to $25. There are six “color stations” along the route — where volunteers will douse you with color if you want them to — and one water station. That’s a fun way to look colorful for the Colorama Parade, which starts at 11 a.m. Saturday.

History of Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. Mother’s Day 2018 occurs on Sunday, May 13, in the United States. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and other gifts.

Helicopter rides offer unmatched view

If you have not seen the coulee area from a helicopter, put this on your bucket list. You’ll get a new appreciation for the area. Inland Helicopter returns this year after a one-year hiatus. They’ll charge $40 per person if all three passenger seats are full, and $60 per person if the seats aren’t. Pilot James Dawe comes with lots of seat-time experience. He’ll be piloting a Robinson R-44 helicopter.
