Country/rock band to play by Roger S. Lucas

L

uke and Isaac Olson are bringing their country rock sound to Coulee Dam, July 4, where they will perform as the Olson Bros. Band, in the park below the Visitor Center. The two hail from Olympia and seem destined for fame with their musical and songwriting skills. The duo won the The Texaco Country Showdown national songwriting contest with a cash prize of $5,000, and soon plan to return to Nashville for a recording session. The band is booked to play twice at the State Fair, and other bookings are rapidly filling its schedule. Luke plays lead guitar, writes songs, and sings. When he isn’t on stage he attends Washinton State University, where he lives with his brother. His major: guitar performance. Isaac plays the mandolin, acoustic guitar, writes songs, sings, and is promoter for the band. He is seeking a degree in civil engineering at WSU. Also part of the band is Nate Collins, the band’s rock solid bass player. He also plays keys and has started writing songs. When not on stage, Collins attends South Puget Sound Community College where he plays trombone in the jazz band. Seth Bowman, who recently joined the band, is the drummer. He is a crime fighter in his day job. Reece the Kid, rounds out the

band with a song writing talent. He recently wrote “My Santa Claus Wears Camouflage” and “Everybody’s Gonna Get Down Tonight.” He also plays banjo. The band broke out in 2013 winning a battle of the bands. The Olson Bros. Band is being brought to the area by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce and is one of three bands featured in the Festival of America celebration at Grand Coulee Dam. They will be on stage from 7 to 9:45 p.m. on Saturday the Fourth of July.

Big band sound will fill park by Roger S. Lucas

V

isitors to the coulee area over the July Fourth “Festival of America” festivities will get to hear the “Big Band” sound at the park below the Visitor Center. Tuxedo Junction, a 21-member band, is made up mostly of “teachers,” according to music director Craig Catlett. There will be an added twist to the band’s appearance; there could be up to five Lake Roosevelt High School band members playing during Tuxedo Junction’s second set at the park. “That’s who we are,” Catlett said, “we like to bring others from where we play into our performances.”

The band, formed in 2001, plays out of the SpokaneCoeur d’ Alene area in both concert settings and special occasions. Tuxedo Junction is noted for its charity performances. Look for the classic swing, latin style, waltzes and modern rock sound when the band performs. The band makes the music of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington, come alive again. Dr. Ruth Pratt is the featured soloist. The band not only plays for charities, but provides scholarships so college students can pursue musical careers. They’ll take the stage from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, the Fourth of July.

Tuxedo Junction will perform July 4 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mac Daddy band makes it a party M ac Daddy Band from Bothell is one of three bands being featured on Friday and Saturday, July 3-4, at the park below the Visitor Center in Coulee Dam. Mac Daddy will bring the sound of the 70s to the park and dig back even further for tunes from the 50s and 60s. One way to tell about a band is to listen to what people who have heard them say about their music. One person who hired the band for his wife’s 60th birthday party stated: “They didn’t simply play at the party, they were the party. Not only are

they fabulous musicians and entertainers, they are great people. They made the party personal and engaged the audience by taking them back in time, musically.” Another noted: “This band has incredibly high energy from start to finish.” The band is made up of Shayne Mac, guitar/vocals; Trixie Mac, mandolin/vocals; Benny Ventura, drums; and Jeri Weaver, bass/vocals. Shayne and Trixie met in what they call a “hole in the wall” bar in south Florida and decided they wanted to make music together. And they do, as July 4 celebrants will learn

Shoreline campers visiting Lake Roosevelt advised of rising water levels

T

he Bureau of Reclamation is alerting visitors planning to camp along the Lake Roosevelt shoreline over the July 4 weekend to be aware of potential dangers from rising lake levels. “When camping along the shoreline, we recommend that tents and other belongings be kept well away from the water’s edge,” said Lynne Brougher, Public Affairs Officer. “The lake is continuing to fill from the spring drawdown.” Each year Lake Roosevelt is lowered in late winter to make space for capturing spring runoff. On July 3, the lake level is anticipated to be in the range of 1285 to 1286.5 feet above sea level. Throughout the holiday weekend it is an-

ticipated the lake could rise another one-half foot per day. The full-pool elevation of Lake Roosevelt is 1290 feet above sea level. “While there will be an ample amount of exposed beaches for camping during the holiday weekend, visitors should be prepared for the lake level to rise and plan accordingly,” said Brougher. Campsites too close to the water’s edge could become flooded. Boats should be anchored or tied securely to the shoreline to avoid having them drift out into the lake and become a safety hazard. “Safety of visitors to Lake Roosevelt is our primary concern and caution is always advised when boating and camping on the shoreline,”

Brougher said. For further information concerning lake levels, contact the Bureau of Reclamation at (509) 633-9503 or visit: http://www.usbr.gov/pn/ grandcoulee/lakelevel/index. html

New laser show this year T

he all new Laser Light Show is in its second year. This 30-minute treat is a great way to spend a late summer evening, and informative too. During the early part of the season, May 23 to July 31, the Laser Light Show begins at 10 p.m. From Aug. 1 through Aug. 31, the show is shown at 9:30 p.m., and from Sept. 1 through Sept. 30 the show begins at 8:30. The laser company that developed the show took two years to make it interesting, and while there have been mixed reviews on the new show, most people like it. When Lake Roosevelt behind the dam is high enough, which it is now, a thin coat of water is spilled onto the spillway to provide a backdrop for the laser show. The show pretty much tells the history and purpose of the dam and how it has changed Central Washington turning it from an arid desert into a modern Garden of Eden. There are seating arrange-

Want to take a tour of Grand Coulee Dam? L

et’s get started. Your first and best place to start is at the Visitor Center. There you can meet one of the visitor officials who will provide a lot of information about the Grand Coulee Dam and direct you to the tour starting point. Taking the tour, you will get a feeling of just how big this dam is. You will be able to stand on top of the dam and look down over the spillway. You will again be surprised about how large Grand Coulee Dam is. Oh, and bring your camera. There will be several photo ops along the tour. Before you leave the Visitor Center, take advantage of the various displays, and by all means allow plenty of time for the various short movies upstairs. They are indeed worth the time and will help you see Grand Coulee Dam in its historical setting. The actual tour begins across the river where you

will board a van or bus. The 50-minute tour is free. Visitors are first screened through a metal detector and you cannot take bags of any kind on the tour. This includes camera bags, diaper bags and purses. Lock these in your trunk as you arrive at the tour kick-off point. The tours are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. You may have a short wait, but the tour is worth it. A federally armed guard accompanies all tours and has ever since the 9/11 attack. From May 23 to September 7, the tours start on the hour beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting until the 5 p.m. tour. From Sept. 8, through Oct. 31, the tours are every two hours beginning at 10 a.m. and ending with the 4 p.m. tour. Enjoy! Tiny tour buses at the top of the dam give perspective of its size.
