Chyenne Kelly-Marconi named Valedictorian for 2014 by Scott Hunter
T
wenty years from now, Chyenne Kelly-Marconi hopes to be a veterinarian at a zoo somewhere. She knows that this means 10 years from now, she’ll still be steeped in studies in a program that takes up to 12 years. The ability to keep her eye on a distant goal, plus her 3.9 grade point average, has earned her the title of valedictorian for the Lake Roosevelt High School class of 2014. Kelly-Marconi cites the school’s small size as its best quality, which allowed her to get to know everybody. Unlike her school in Moses Lake, from which she transferred as a freshman, she found an inclusive social atmosphere at LR. “In Moses Lake there were so many people you didn’t get close to anybody,” she said. “Here, I got know, like, everybody.” But she was ahead of her new classmates academically after the transfer. She advises incoming freshmen to stay ahead of their studies for a better high
school experience. “Get ahead early, and stay on top,” she said. Kelly-Marconi participated in volleyball and track. And she just competed in her third state track meet last weekend, placing in triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. A Gates Foundation full-ride scholarship recipient, she is headed to Washington State University to study for that veterinarian career. Researching for that choice, she says, she decided to aim for the zoo market because of relatively scarce supply of veterinarians qualified for that service, hence better job opportunities. Most veterinary doctors want to work with small animals, helping people’s pets, she notes, not big animals in a zoo. Once again, Kelly-Marconi’s eyes are focused on the bigger prize. Chyenne Kelly-Marconi is the daughter of Jason and Gina Erickson, of Coulee Dam.
Daniel Campobasso is class Salutatorian for 2014 by Scott Hunter
E
ventually, Daniel Campobasso would like to own his own company. “I want to own something … that I’ve put work into,” he says. “I don’t want to be working under someone else.” But that’s perhaps 20 years in his future, maybe in Los Angeles, he says, asked to speculate. With a 3.848 grade point average, Campobasso is the class of 2014’s salutatorian. He hopes to be three years into a career in business 10 years from now, having earned a master of business administration degree at a good university, perhaps Duke or Dartmouth “if I can even get in,” he says. In the meantime he’ll spend a couple years at Gonzaga University, but he hopes to transfer to a school with a more highly rated business curriculum. Campobasso’s dreams are entirely plausible financially, since he is one of three Gates Foundation full-ride scholarship recipients in the class. Campobasso has gone to Grand Coulee Dam School District schools since
kindergarten. Nevertheless, the toughest part of his LR experience was as a freshman when he felt isolated until he got involved in sports. Campobasso participated in basketball, tennis and cross country. The small size of the school was his favorite thing about it, he said, but he offered incoming freshmen advice: “Participate in as many activities as you can. Get out of your comfort zone.” Campobasso credits an advanced placement class on comparative politics and government with waking him up about the need to study. It really showed what college classes are going to be like and started to train us in study habits,” he said. “The other classes that I’ve taken here are pretty easy, and I didn’t really have a clue of what I was going to get in college, but that class really showed me you’re going to have to work hard in college.” And that willingness to engage in hard work may bode well for a bright young man intent on owning his own company someday. Daniel Campobasso is the son of Michelle Campobasso, of Coulee Dam.
