Push to beef up police By NATALIE GALLENTI CAROLINE Springs residents and local politicians are tired of being neglected and are calling on the State Government to provide greater police presence in the area and complete the much-needed train station. A petition circulated by Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins, calling for more police officers to be based at Caroline Springs police station and for the station to be opened 24 hours a day and operate seven days a week, has already received hundreds of signatures. Ms Hutchins said she was “gobsmacked” by the recent announcement that more police officers were being deployed to the neighbouring municipality of Brimbank, while Melton missed out once again. The Keilor MP said residents had the right to feel safe within their community, and slow police response times were instilling fear in many people. Referring to a recent incident in Taylors Hill, Ms Hutchins said residents heard gunshots, but had to wait far too long for police to attend the scene - simply because they were coming from Melton or even further away. “Predominantly, the crimes they are concerned about is drug related. They are very vigilant about reporting crime to Crime Stoppers,” she said. “But while the population continues to grow at an enormous rate each week, the facilities are not keeping up.”

She sited the incomplete Caroline Springs train station and the need for a hospital as two other major priorities the State Government needed to consider. Caroline Springs resident Alana Sirianni said more police officers were needed to man the station and patrol the streets. “Every time, I ring Caroline Springs station, I’m diverted to Melton,” she told Star. Ms Sirianni said she and neighbours were constantly concerned about the number of motorcyclists riding through residential streets, but each time she calls the police station she was put on hold and transferred to Melton. “It’s not good enough. If you have to wait a few minutes to be diverted, if it’s a real emergency…well you could be dead in that time.” She said while people were encouraged to ring triple-zero, many people often wanted to speak to their local officers. Ms Sirianni said recently a car was dumped in the lake close to the corner of Gourlay and Taylors roads, and it took police at least three days to remove it. “It just shows me that there are no patrols…it’s frustrating.” Ms Sirianni also said while she agreed the train station needed to be completed, there needed to be police to man it.

Future with hope

AFTER celebrating the inaugural St Jude awareness day, students from Lakeview Senior College now have a greater understanding of what matters most in life and are looking forward to a future filled with helping others. The school hosted guest speaker Felix who has travelled all the way from the school of St Jude in Tanzania and is touring Australia to offer words of wisdom and hope. School captains, pictured, Shelley Senech and Nick Christoforou, along with vice-captain Sherry-Rose Watts, said the special day was a resounding success, and students were now more motivated than ever to help youngsters in developing countries access basic rights like food, shelter and water. Assistant principal Jennifer Warne said staff members were very proud of the students and the commitment they had made to support St Jude and its pupils. Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI The school raised $1300 on the day. 108530

MEDIAN house prices across the City of Melton continue to enjoy a steady increase in some areas, while falling in others. September quarter figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria revealed house and unit prices decreased slightly in Melton West and Melton, while vendors across Caroline Springs only enjoyed a small increase of 1.7 per cent. The biggest crash was in Taylors Hill, where prices tumbled by 15.2 per cent from $480,000 in September 2012 to $441,500 in September this year. However, the neighbouring suburb of Burnside Heights recorded a massive 15.4 per cent increase, from $410,000 last September to $473,000 in the latest quarter. Median house prices in Brookfield increased by 2.9 per cent. The nearby suburbs of Sunshine and Sunbury both enjoyed increases, while Werribee is still well below last year’s prices. In Melbourne’s West, Footscray was one of the best performing suburbs with an annual increase of 10.7 per cent. REIV CEO Enzo Raimondo said that this quarter’s higher-than-expected growth showed a very clear increase in demand but warned that this level of growth might not be sustained over the long term.

The limits of licences By NATALIE GALLENTI TEENAGERS and their parents are being encouraged to attend tomorrow’s community road safety forum in a bid to educate young drivers on the restrictions that apply to them when they first obtain their licence. Melton Police Inspector Stephen Mutton said the aim of the forum was to help parents play a bigger part in the safety of their children and have a greater understanding about the L and P phases and the graduated licensing restrictions that are imposed. Insp Mutton said there will be a number of different speakers, including local police, a driving instructor, VicRoads representatives and members of the public who are involved in road safety. Melton City Council road safety and active transport officer Jan Webb said parents were often unaware of

the rules P-plate drivers must adhere to when they first receive their licence. Ms Webb said one of the restrictions which is often not followed is that P1 probationary drivers are only permitted to carry one passenger, irrespective of age, for the balance of the P1 period on re-issue. “What we’re trying to do is get parent input on the graduating licensing system with a focus on education,” Ms Webb said. “We want parents to influence their kids and play a part in keeping their children safe ... the restrictions are in place for a reason.” Ms Webb said past participants of the road safety forum are welcome to come to the event and offer expertise on the issue. The forum will be held tomorrow evening from 7pm to 9.30pm at the Melton Community Hall, 232 High St, Melton.

Cops urge right way forward MOTORISTS are being warned to adhere to temporary road signs on the corner of Coburns and Barries roads or risk facing hefty fines. Acting Senior Seregeant Chris Stuhldreier from the Melton Highway Patrol said motorists that continue to flout the law and turn left into Barries Rd from Coburns Rd, despite signage warning them not to, will face fines of up to $180. He said earlier this month 20 infringement notices were handed out in the span of 10 to 20 minutes at the notorious black spot.

Acting Sen Sgt Stuhldreier said while road works continued on this stretch of road, the police would continue to enforce the law. Meanwhile Melton Highway Patrol, with assistance from Brimbank Highway Patrol, conducted Operation Roadnet on 17 October from 6pm to 2am. Overall 1175 tests were conducted, with three drivers charged with exceeding the alcohol limit and one driver charged after testing positive to illicit drugs.

Interest builds in model display By NATALIE GALLENTI LEGO lovers across the West are being invited to attend an exhibition showcasing a range of creations made from a popular childhood toy. Next month the Melton Community Hall will feature many creations and models meticulously made by members of the Melbourne Lego User Group.

Event organiser Elaine Radford said the creations will range from fairytale castles to World War II aircraft, spaceships, rockets and cityscapes. “Children and adults alike are encouraged to ask questions of the creators about their designs, the quantity of bricks used and how much time their creations took to

build,” Elaine told Star. The display is being presented by the Melton Uniting Church and all proceeds raised will go towards the church. “Our church is involved in the Melton community and many members of the church are involved in the many aspects of the township of Melton.”

The exhibition will take place on Saturday 23 November, from 9.30am to 5pm, and Sunday 24 November, 9am to 3pm, at the Melton Community Hall, corner of High and Smith streets, Melton. To purchase tickets visit www. trybooking.com/63801. Tickets are limited at the door. Food and refreshments are available for purchase at the event.

Coppers eye thieves By NATALIE GALLENTI MELTON Police have vowed to crack down on copper wire thefts. The warning comes in the wake of a spate of copper wire thefts including two at a shipping container construction site in Houdini Drive, Diggers Rest. Copper pipe and brass fittings valued in excess of $8000 were stolen during the heists. In a similar incident, copper wiring was stolen from another construction site at the Maplewood Estate in Melton South.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said the offenders spent considerable time at the site and went to approximately 50 individual blocks of land where they cut and stole a one metre length of copper wiring from each. Det Sen Sgt Jenks said the wiring had been recently installed on each block in preparation for connection or power and, while the total value of the copper is around $200, the cost of replacement and repair work for the developer will be many thou-

sands of dollars. “Police are currently targeting these types of offenders and potential points of sale of valuable metals,” he told Star. “It is hoped that by reducing the opportunity for re-sale of stolen metal, it will become less attractive to thieves. “A similar problem still exists in relation to thefts of water meters and police would like to speak with anyone who may be able to provide information in relation to these types of thefts.”

Christmas Functions & Luncheons

Connecting people and communities MELT

A Star Advertising Feature

Food for the festivities Think Christmas-themed biscuits, cakes, slices and puddings.

Fully Licensed & B.Y.O (Wine Only)

CHRISTMAS and food are intrinsically linked and many of the memories we have are based around eating. When we think about Christmas, the first thought that often comes up is usually “what are we eating this year?” or “remember how full we were last Christmas?” There are the yearly family discussions of who will be hosting this year’s lunch (or dinner), if Nan is bringing her famous pudding, or what’s best to eat in the hot weather. So it makes sense to give some delicious edible Christmas presents this year. Not only does it make gift giving easier (no late night shopping among the crowds required) but it is also a very thoughtful present which is sure to be enjoyed. For those who enjoy getting messy in the kitchen, this is the cue to source some great ingredients and whip up something wonderful. Think Christmas themed biscuits, cakes, slices, pudding, and make a large batch so your

edible gift can be given to a number of people. This kind of gift will be perfect for the grandparents or parents who have everything or older relatives and friends. Edible Christmas gifts can be as simple as picking out some special sweets, fine wine, or other goodies, which the recipient likes and presenting it well. Source some large baskets or tins, or double up the gift giving by using a cooler bag or a nice platter or bowl, to arrange chosen edible gifts in.

Use some cellophane (large rolls can be purchased), and wrap it up, finishing with a bow or ribbon to create a beautiful edible Christmas hamper. Another idea is to find out which restaurants loved ones often frequent or have been thinking of going, and purchase a gift voucher for a nice meal. This could go in a hamper as an extra bonus, or be presented with a Christmas card. The ideas are endless when it comes to food and gifts, so start planning now.

JORDAN Kight’s never really had a day of cricket like it. Last weekend, the gun 15-year-old scored his first ever century opening the batting for the Melton West Saints, making 102 against Melton South Primary School. Then, just a few hours later for Melton’s fourth XI in the VSDCA, Kight did it again. Facing the much more experienced bowling attack of Williamstown, Kight managed to notch up century number two with a knock of 106. “I was pretty happy because I’d never made a hundred before, and to make two was overwhelming,” Kight said. Alongside fellow youngster Thomas Doan, the pair pro-

duced a partnership worth 145 for the second wicket to lead Melton into a strong position in the two-dayer at Bayside Secondary College. After Doan was bowled for 63, Kight then added another 33 runs with Tom Button before his remarkable day in the middle was finally over. “He’s (Doan) two years older than me and we were just helping each other through,” Kight said. “It was nerve-racking but I

just got on with it and tried not to focus on the fact that I was that close (to another century).” Kight is hoping to follow in the footsteps of older brother Dylan, who is currently plying his trade with both the Victorian futures squad and Footscray Edgewater in Premier Cricket. “I’m taking cricket pretty seriously,” Kight said. “I’m training three nights a week and I want to go as far as I can, basically.”

At least they won the toss By ADEM SARICAOGLU ST ANTHONY’S remains perched on the bottom of the table in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup after suffering its fourth successive loss on Saturday. A winless St Anthony’s outfit travelled to Clarke Oval to take on Sunbury and after winning the toss, chose to send the hosts in to bat. The visitors’ attack enjoyed a relatively successful day with Rod Oosterhoff claiming three wickets and Warren Haffenden and Andrew Steele each snaring two of their own. However, Sunbury still managed to reach 9/163 in its 40over dig, with Heath Boffey (48) and Paul Webber (45) each leading the way for the home team. St Anthony’s then went on to struggle in its pursuit of 164, falling well short of the mark for the loss of nine wickets by the end of their 40-over reply.

Darren MacRae (22), Cameron Lewis (17) and skipper Michael Yates (13) were the only St Anthony’s batsmen to reach double figures for the day as runs proved hard to come by. Ultimately the final winning margin for Sunbury was 83, with St Anthony’s ending the day at 9/80. St Anthony’s will host Sunbury United in another one-dayer this weekend. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh is well-placed in second spot on the McIntyre Cup table after claiming an 81-run win over Wallan on Saturday. After choosing to bat first on Wallan’s home deck at Greenhill Oval, Bacchus Marsh enjoyed a day out in the middle, with opener Dylan Wright scoring 85 to set the visitors up nicely. Wright watched four of his batting partners fall before his day was done with his side looking good at 5/158, and from

there Thomas Wardell and Rhys Watson (22 each) then went on to steer Bacchus Marsh beyond 200. Wallan’s chase never gathered any momentum as five of Bacchus Marsh’s seven bowlers got themselves among the wickets. Mark Hooper (2/15), Tom McColl (2/16) and Watson (2/30) were all impressive with the ball while Nick Strangio and Ian Spiteri (each with figures of 1/12), also helped get the job done. Wallan’s Matthew Bell (26) was the only batsman to get into the 20s as Bacchus Marsh cruised home, restricting the host to 8/121 by the end of the innings. This weekend Bacchus Marsh will host third-placed Riddell in another one-dayer ahead of a full schedule of twodayers for the remainder of November.

Sport IT’S FAIR to say 2013 has been big for rising Sydenham tennis star, Lucas Vuradin. Vuradin, 14, recently came home from New South Wales a national champion in his age group and also collected a number of good results in other tournaments during his trip up north. Earlier this year the Maribyrnong College Sports Academy student also had the honour of representing Australia abroad, competing in a handful of tournaments in Europe against some of the world’s best juniors. Vuradin said he relished the opportunity to experience firsthand facing quality opponents on the other side of the globe. “It was such a new experience because I never played against the European kids before and they’re much more experienced than the kids down here,” Vuradin said. “Their game styles are much more different as well and I just got to know different game styles, different players and different types of courts as well,” he said. The best of all his recent achievements, however, has been acquiring the number one

national ranking. “It was pretty hard to believe at the start, because out of all these years of training and working hard and stuff like that, I’ve finally got to number one in Australia,” Vuradin said. “I’m just happy to be where I am now and I’m just trying to keep that spot going for as long as possible.” However, Vuradin has been forced to halt his progress since finishing up his recently busy schedule. The gun right-hander is expecting to sit out tournaments for at least the next month after succumbing to bone stress in his left foreman. Vuradin said he likely picked up the injury after playing for three weeks straight in Sydney. “I was just over-playing it, really, and to recover from it I’m just taking two weeks off,” Vuradin explained. “I’m currently in my second week of not hitting any backhands at all, so at the start of (this) week I’ll start getting back into it. “But it probably won’t recover for about another three or four weeks.” Vuradin hopes to one day go pro and crack the top 100.

AT GEELONG on Tuesday, Hopetoun Park duo Ross and Greg Sugars were successful with Kiwi-bred six-year-old Julius Caesar/ Shamrock Bay mare Our Nancy Miles in the Vinmar Homes Pace for C3 and C4 class over 2100 metres. Given a sweet trip three back in the moving line from gate five, Our Nancy Miles was sent forward three wide racing for the bell to park outside the leader Amazing Kano for the final circuit. Drawing clear prior to the home turn, Our Nancy Miles recorded an effortless victory over Atomic Horizon (one/one) and Vinni Gambino (three back the markers) in a mile rate of 1-59.7.

THE Adam Kelly team are back on song and four-year-old Badlands Hanover/Coringa Ruby gelding Rubys Bad Boy first up since June, was an impressive victor of The Ray Beckley Memorial Pacers Handicap for C1 or better class over 2100metres. Starting from outside the 10-metre mark, Rubys Bad Boy settled well back in the field before gaining a lovely three wide trail home in the last lap on the back of The Dip from midfield. Asked for an effort on turning, Rubys Bad Boy ran home stylishly to score from The Dip and Hellfire Angel, which trailed the weakening leader Myrniong Panorama in a rate of 2-02.3.

MELTON’S Joe Borg has picked up a handy stable addition in former New Zealander Frank The Duck, which greeted the judge in The James Saliba Pace for C1 class over 2100 metres. A first up Australian winner at Yarra Valley on 30 September, Frank The Duck, driven by John Caldow, enjoyed a perfect passage one/one from gate five and when eased three wide in the final
