Hot moves FOOTSCRAY hip hop crew L2R Next Generation will be showing off their moves this Friday in a special showcase performance at the Phoenix Youth Centre. The group of 13 to 21-year-old dancers, which train every Thursday, is mentored by the Limbs 2 Riddims dance crew. “We believe that there is one language we can all speak – dance,” Jacinda Richards from Limbs 2 Riddims said. “The crew are culturally and linguistically diverse, and many are newly arrived to Australia, so it’s an expressive outlet for them when language is hard or during their initial settlement phase in Australia. “ The L2R Next Generation showcase will run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council has called a proposed $280 million development on the former Le Mans Toyota site in Footscray an embarrassment. State Planning Minister Matthew Guy, who is the responsible authority for the Josephs Rd precinct that the site falls within, referred the site’s master plan for council comment. The master plan includes the development of eight apartment blocks including 795 apartments, 4083 square metres of commercial space for shops, restaurants and cafes, and 744 car park-
ing spaces. The buildings are between six and 24 storeys high. Maribyrnong City Council publicly objected to the proposed development at last week’s council meeting, citing inconsistencies with the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme, excessive height and overshadowing on neighbouring sites. Councillor Martin Zakharov said the plans submitted for the site lacks significant detail, including elevations, floor plans, car parking layouts and engineering specifications. Cr Zakharov said the plans “fly in the face of the things that the Planning Minister pretends to support”.
Fellow councillor Sarah Carter expressed her outrage at the council being left out of important negotiations surrounding Footscray’s future, saying the application was a “slap in the face” from the Planning Minister. In a twist, Places Victoria was close to selling the old Le Mans Toyota site for close to $18 million, according to media reports in August. The planning application is one of many to reach the council in recent years. It is believed Mr Guy is currently considering a raft of high-rise apartment buildings from five different developers – with a total 3061 apartments in build-
ings ranging from four storeys to 32 storeys high. The plans come after a recent planning overhaul has shunted the council’s Skyline Study, which dictates preferred building heights across Footscray. The council has recommended that buildings along the Josephs Rd precinct should go no higher than 14 storeys. Mr Guy has already approved two major developments in the area in recent years, including a 25-storey apartment block along Moreland St, and most recently a cluster of five apartments with a maximum height of 32 storeys on Hopkins St.

MOST people go crazy documenting their overseas holidays with a series of photos. For West Footscray artist Judith Leuenberger, her European adventures have sparked a new exhibition. Ms Leuenberger has drawn a series of pastels on watercolour-based paper for her upcoming exhibition European light, which chronicles the light and landscapes she encountered during a three-moth trip to England and Switzerland earlier this year. “In Switzerland, we lived for a month with one of my husband’s brothers and they live on a mountain overlooking a lake and a valley, so I worked every morning in the garden, where they had a nice secluded area,” she said. “I’d go out there with my music and just go for it. “Even though it was the same view, it looked different every day because the weather was different, the light was different. “In England, I stayed with my eldest sister, she lives alone in a cottage in Somerset and she doesn’t really go upstairs much, so that became my domain for a month.” Ms Leuenberger also took photos of a poppy field in Switzerland and photos of the Cotswolds, which she later worked off.

Judith Leuenberger will be exhibiting her pastel work next Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI month. 108303 In a departure from her usual pastels, Ms Leuenberger prepared 100 sheets of watercolour paper with watercolour washes, including cool, dark, light and warm colours, to enhance her drawings. “I like the effect it has had (on the work),” she said. Despite having her own home studio, Ms Leuenberger has just leased out a space at the MREAM studios. “It’s in an open, public space where you’re there just to do
your art work. “Here, I might stop and start cooking, or the phone goes, or I just decide to have a lie down. There, it’s more like a job. “It’s really good to have the studio here as well, because I find my creativity and the drive to do something usually comes about 10pm, and then I might work until 2am.” The European Light exhibition opens on 14 November at Altona’s Joel Gallery and runs until 24 November.

HOUSES in Footscray and Yarraville were in high demand over winter, driving up sales prices across the two suburbs. Quarterly median house prices for September reveal Footscray house prices jumped 12.6 per cent from $553,000 to $622,000, making it one of the top five growth suburbs across metropolitan Melbourne. Yarraville, which ranked 10th, enjoyed a 10.3 per cent price jump to hit a median of $739,000. On the flip side, the Braybrook median slumped 2.5 per cent in the last quarter. In other REIV statistics, four City of Maribyrnong suburbs -West Footscray, Maidstone, Maribyrnong and Seddon - recorded less than 30 sales during the quarter. There was no sales data for Kingsville or Tottenham. REIV CEO Enzo Raimondo said buyers were taking advantage of low interest rates - but said the rapid increase in house prices meant affordability pressures could start to act as a counter balance to demand in the next few months, particularly for first home buyers. “This quarter’s increase was driven by a very strong increase in demand, particularly in August and September,” he said. “Sustained growth in previous quarters has also instilled further confidence in the property market in Melbourne. “The increased demand is supported by a number of positive indicators in the state including population growth, consumer sentiment, clearance rates and the number of sales. “Suburbs with the strongest growth in median prices this quarter were concentrated in the inner and middle suburbs. “This is reflective of the relatively high number of premium sales, particularly million dollar sales, in this quarter.”
Speed charge A DISQUALIFIED driver was caught doing 50 km/hr over the speed limit in Braybrook with his pregnant partner and four kids in tow last night. Highway Patrol officers from Footscray Police Station were conducting speed checks along Duke St, near Ballarat Rd, about 5pm when a car was clocked doing 110km/hr in the 60km/hr zone. When the Highway Patrol officer intercepted the car a short while later, he discovered the driver had his pregnant partner sitting next to him in the front and four children under the age of five in the back seat. One of the kids was not correctly secured. Police also discovered the driver was disqualified, while the vehicle was both unregistered and unroadworthy. The 23-year-old driver from Kingsville is expected to be charged on summons with speed dangerous, unregistered vehicle, disqualified driving and other traffic related offences. “After 32 years in the police force, there isn’t all that much that surprises me any more - but sometimes there are exceptions,” Footscray police Inspector Tony Long said. Victoria Police has been targeting speeding drivers and riders throughout October, which is a traditionally dangerous period on Victorian roads.

PSOs’ presence felt Trucking AN INDEPENDENT study has revealed that night-time train commuters feel much safer when Protective Services Officers (PSOs) are manning their train station. Market research consultants DBM carried out the study across a selection of stations patrolled by PSOs - including Yarraville, South Yarra, Noble Park, Epping, Frankston and Box Hill - to determine how effective the officers were in maintaining perceptions of public safety. The study found: Night-time train users gave
·
PSOs almost universal approval, with 94 per cent agreeing that PSOs are a good idea and 93 per cent keen to seek their help if they felt unsafe; 94 per cent of night-time train users reported having seen PSOs on patrol, and those commuters who knew that PSOs patrolled their station felt safer; and Two-thirds of parents said they would be happier about their children travelling by train at night, now that PSOs are patrolling. PSOs guard the stations in pairs between 6pm and the last train and
·
·
are equipped with the same weapons as police. They also have the authority to shoot as a last resort. There are currently 488 PSOs working at 79 train stations across the network. Across the West, PSOs are stationed at Footscray, West Footscray, Yarraville, Tottenham, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Williams Landing, Sunshine, St Albans, Watergardens, Melton, Altona, Williamstown, Laverton and Newport. Ginifer train station became the latest to staff PSOs, with officers starting their shift last Tuesday. PSOs have issued more than
12,000 infringement notices for a wide range of offences, including being drunk in a public place, possessing alcohol, graffiti and weapons. “We committed to making our railway stations places of safety, not fear, and these are extraordinary findings and testament to the Coalition Government’s commitment to introduce PSOs at metropolitan and major regional railway stations from 6pm until the last train every night of the year,” Police Minister Kim Wells said. The State Government has promised to deploy 940 PSOs across Melbourne’s train stations by November 2014.
Miles tipped as hot favourite for mayor By CHARLENE MACAULAY GRANT Miles is the hot tip to take over from Catherine Cumming when the mayoral election is held tomorrow night. The current deputy mayor, who was voted in at last year’s Maribyrnong City Council elections, is likely to run unopposed. Cr Miles runs Cheaper Buy Miles in Footscray and is the former president of the Footscray Traders’ Association. “Far be it from me to pr-empt a decision in the council chambers, but I’ve got a one in seven chance,” Cr Miles told Star last week. “If I did turn out to be the lucky one on the night, I’d be very pleased.” Cr Miles has the support of at least two councillors, including former mayor Sarah Carter. “He has the support of the majority of councillors, he’s certainly done an excellent job as deputy mayor, and I think he’ll do the job particularly well,” Cr Carter said. “I guess he’s the hot favourite, certainly so, and I would expect that it would be a majority that would support him.” Outgoing mayor Catherine Cumming said it would be great to have another independent councillor appointed as mayor. “Grant’s run for the council at least two or three times, so he’s obviously shown a keenness to represent the community, and I think he’d be a good candidate,” Cr Cumming said.“He’s a local business owner in Footscray, and he understands the issues. “It took me 16 years to become the mayor, and I think it’s only fair that others get the opportunity and don’t have to wait 16 years like me,” he said. “These opportunities to become the mayor are quite rare and it’s quite a privilege ... I’ve absolutely loved and enjoyed my mayoralty, but it’s exhausting, time consuming and takes you away a lot from your family. I would (like to do it again) in the future, but at the moment I’d like to have more time with my children.” Fellow councillor Martin Zakharov added: “The deputy is standing, I imagine, and that’s probably a foregone conclusion. I don’t think there’s any strong opposition to him doing it.” Councillors Nam Quach and Cameron McDonald declined to comment on the issue.

MARIBYRNONG City Council has told VicRoads it will not allow the use of high productivity freight vehicles (HPFVs) across the local road network without an agreed freight route. The council has also knocked back an application to operate super B-double high productivity freight vehicles along Olympia St in Tottenham. The application called for the use of five 30-metre B-double HPFVs to make 25 trips along Olympia St per week between 7am and 4.30pm. The HPFVs differ from normal B-doubles currently using the municipality’s arterial roads in that they are longer and carry great loads - four twentyfoot equivalent unit containers - on the one vehicle. The super B-double trucks are fitted with an IIP system that allows VicRoads to track the vehicle and can alert officers in charge if it is travelled outside the designated route. VicRoads has mapped out certain approved routes for the HPFVs along the Declared Main Rd Network, including Whitehall St, the West Gate Freeway, Geelong Rd, Geelong St, Sunshine Rd and Somerville Rd. There is also a network of roads across Brimbank and Hobsons Bay - such as McDonald Rd, Millers Rd and Francis St - that are close to the municipal boundaries. The council must give its consent and issue permits for HPFVs to operate along residential streets across the municipality. The council has told VicRoads that it will not allow the use of HPFVs on residential streets until the transport body consults the council and the community and agree on a freight route. Councillor Grant Miles said the B-double and Btriple trucks were far too big for residential streets. “We don’t want to end up with a situation where the back end of the truck is in Braybrook and the front end of the truck is in Footscray,” Cr Miles said.

Street art comes to life By CHARLENE MACAULAY COULD you be the next Baby Guerilla? Footscray trader and Maribyrnong councillor Grant Miles is giving street artists across Melbourne the chance to adorn the walls of Maddern Square this year as part of the Footscray Street Art Prize, which will run in conjunction with the Big West Festival. A selected group of artists will be given a space to fill and are invited to use a variety of forms and mediums to create their artwork - including aerosol paint, stencils, pasteups, traditional painting and
drawing techniques. The competition, which was introduced last year, is Australia’s richest street art prize and offers a $4000 bounty for the winner. This year, there will also be prizes for a youth category and incentive award. Cr Miles had to move the location from Chambers Lane to Maddern Square this year to accommodate demand. “I’m really excited about having it as an event within the Big Festival,” Cr Miles said. “We’ll have the opportunity to have larger areas (for street art). Last year we gave everybody exactly the same size area,
and some people said it wasn’t big enough. “The walls of my shop have had hardly any tagging in the last 12 months. It’s a solution to the problem we have with tagging and illegal graffiti.” Collingwood artist Michael Maka, who works under the name Makatron, took out the prize last year with his entry Bees, an aerosol rendition of bees perched on the wall. This time around, Mr Maka will be one of the judges, joining fellow street artists Baby Guerilla and Duke. Registrations are now open at www.footscraystreetart.com. au

Paul: The annual Vietnamese festival is something to see. They close off the whole streets, and there is food, rides and people everywhere. You can hardly move around. It’s amazing and well worth checking out. And the Mona Castle. Like an old pub and without pokies. If you could describe Footscray in one word, what would it be? Action on violence By XAVIER SMERDON THE new CEO of the West’s largest advocacy group has promised to focus more on social issues like violence against women. Craig Rowley was confirmed as the CEO of LeadWest earlier this month after Anton Mayer retired from the top job. Mr Rowley comes from a background of both public and private enterprises and has lived in the West for over 10 years with his wife and two children. He was also involved in corporate and community development with Stonnington Council. It was this experience that Mr Rowley
said made him want to join an organisation like LeadWest. “With my job I would drive through Toorak and see the big mansions before driving home to the West,” he said. “It made me think how different our communities were and how I’d like to give something back to the West.” Mr Rowley said during his tenure as CEO of LeadWest there would be better engagement between all members of the group so that they “can see the fruits of their efforts translate into results”. He also said there would be a renewed focus on social issues that would in turn improve the West’s financial outlook.
“When you look at issues like preventing violence against women, the investment isn’t very high, yet a reasonable amount of money can make a huge difference to people’s lives,” he said. “If we can make a difference in some of these areas then we can increase people’s opportunities to participate.” Mr Rowley also said that while Maribyrnong Council had signalled that they were planning on leaving LeadWest, they would still be members for another two years. He said he could see potential that the council would change its mind in that time and remain members of LeadWest.

Young sports on the ball By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE Westgate Basketball Association is proof you can be a girly girl and still shoot hoops. The group, which has more than 400 kids playing across nearly 60 teams every Saturday out of Whitten Oval Stadium, has recently introduced a Pinkball team to its ranks. Pinkball caters to girls aged between five and 12 years, and is a more feminine take on the sport, with female coaches and helpers, a pink basketball and pink singlets.
“Basketball is sometimes viewed as a predominantly boys’ sport, and netball is often seen as the girls’ sport,” Westgate Basketball committee member Jo Hansby said. “We’ve got lower participation rates in our girls’ teams across the board, and our Aussie Hoops coach found out about a Pinkball program that was getting run across Dandenong, and thought it would be great to try it out here in the West. “It’s a fun way to advertise basketball to girls - and that’s not to say that all girls will want
to do Pinkball, we’ve still got girls registered in the Aussie Hoops program.” The Pinkball team already has 20 young girls signed up. The Westgate Basketball Association has boys’ teams in under-10s, under-12s, under14s, under-16s and under-20s, and girls’ teams in under-13s and under-17s. The group is also looking to start a women’s and mixed adults team. Go to www.westgatebasketball.com.au for more information.

The Transpacific Brooklyn Transfer Station processes and removes more than 400 tonnes of material in an average month. Operators pick through the rubble and recycle what they Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI can. 108448
1099215-JO44-13
Rummaging rubbish MORE than 12 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste is generated every year in Australia - with more than half sent to landfill. The not-for-profit Planet Ark Environmental Foundation has set up a free online directory, BusinessRecycling.com.au, to help cut back on rising rates of landfill. Planet Ark’s recycling programs manager, Janet Sparrow, has urged businesses across Victoria to decrease their waste by visiting the site. “As waste disposal costs increase, it makes financial sense to look for recycling options for the wide range of waste materials generated by businesses,” Ms Sparrow said. In the Brimbank area, the
top five materials searched for the BusinessRecycling site include cardboard cartons, video and audio tapes, computers and accessories, office paper and printer cartridges. One business in the West which is featured on the internet page is Transpacific’s Brooklyn Transfer Station. The centre’s operations supervisor, Marcus Steer, said in an average month, the site removes or processes the 230 tonnes of timber, 100 tonnes of hard green waste, 80 tonnes of steel and eight tonnes of cardboard. “The facility operates as a drop off point for residential waste, commercial and industrial waste, green waste and kerbside collection waste,” Mr Steer said,
“The materials dropped off are then sorted and segregated into items that can be recycled and reused. “The facility is operated by eight employees covering a seven-day roster, with tasks ranging from a gate attendant to machine operators handling materials.” Mr Steer said Transpacific viewed all waste as a resource and aimed to incorporate recovery, recycling and reuse throughout its operations. “Transfer stations are in integral part of waste and recycling management solutions for local areas, as they help to divert waste away from landfill, saving valuable landfill space and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Flush with crime By CHARLENE MACAULAY JANE Clifton has returned to a life of crime with the release of her latest novel, Flush. The Maribyrnong writer, actress and singer is back in print with her third crime novel, which starts with a body washed up in Maribyrnong River. Decca Brand, the former psychologist of the number one suspect, gets embroiled in the whodunit along with DCI Archie Stock and his sidekick ‘Davey’ Crockett from the Homicide Unit at the St Kilda Road police headquarters. It’s been a while between crimes for Ms Clifton but she says she actually wrote Flush not long after releasing her 2005 novel, A Hand in the Bush. “Given that I can talk under water - or wet cement - it may be little wonder that I’ve written a book called Flush, she said. “I get to explore every meaning of the word flush. “A body which was destined to lie under wet cement is flushed out of a building site into the Maribyrnong River after a massive downpour. “There are people who are flush with money and others with hot flushes. “Others have cheeks that are flushed without the delights of menopause. “And, of course, eventually a murderer is flushed out. The action stretches from the Maribyrnong River, not far from where Clifton lives with her family, to Williamstown, St Kilda, Perth and as far as Kosovo.
2013 Annual Meeting The Western Health Annual Meeting will this year be held at 5.30pm on Thursday 14 November in the Panorama Room at Flemington Racecourse. Presentation of staff service awards will commence at 4.30pm. The formal Annual Meeting will commence at 5.30pm. Light refreshments will be provided following the meeting.

Christmas party ideas to make a party a success. Get out of the night time groove. While people tend to think of parties as evening affairs, they don’t have to be. Even if a company Christmas party idea is to host a meal for guests at a restaurant or hotel, people will drink less at a luncheon rather than a dinner. So just switching the time of day can help make alcohol less of an issue. Break the mould. Whatever a company normally does, change it from year to year. Host a disc golf, skating or bowling party. Remember when choosing a Christmas party idea based on an activity to pick something

that everyone can do. Mix up the guest list. Instead of hosting a Christmas party that’s just for staff, widen the guest list to include extended family, friends, neighbours and business associates. Dealcoholise the Christmas party. There is no rule that alcohol has to be served at a company Christmas party. People can certainly have a good time without drinking alcohol. Just make sure that everyone knows that it’s an alcohol free party ahead of time and that there will be plenty of other things for people to drink. Besides juices, teas, coffees and alcohol-free punches, mocktails can be a fun alternative.

THE one rule of hosting a company Christmas party is not to hold it in the office. It’s a good rule to follow. But there are two problems to solve to make the company Christmas party a success. How to get colleagues to show up and how to solve the alcohol dilemma? Tired and stressed employees may be hard to entice into spending even more time with one another, especially if the annual Christmas party has become a tired tradition. Both happiness and safety can be compromised when people are drinking and as a social host, legally organisers have a duty to supervise their guests and make sure they all get home safely if they’re consuming alcohol at a party. Men at Work It’s a role that has defined generations of men - the provider, the breadwinner, the worker. When you ask men why they work, a lot of them will say they’re ‘only in it for the money’. When you work for money, you can be financially independent, provide a future for your family and have some control over your life. Sometimes money truly is the only reason a person works. But today it is becoming increasingly important to have a more substantial reason for working. Some want to spend their days doing something their good at, being productive or if they have skills which other people need, they feel obliged to supply them. The idea of not going to work and spending time at the beach, watching television, going to the movies or shopping, hanging out with friends and playing sport might appeal, but at least some money is necessary to do these things. Relaxing and kicking back is great for a holiday, but the novelty will wear off and leave you feeling aimless and bored. The benefits of paid and unpaid work are strongly linked to values we hold. When you know what your values are regarding work, you can work out what you hope to achieve through working, what your overall ambitions are, set meaningful goals, choose jobs that will satisfy you in ways that are deeper than your hip pocket and understand why you feel dissatisfied in a job that doesn’t fit with your values. F How would you rate your FB: ccooking skills? RM: Not as good as Donna R H but good enough. All Hay y need is a bit of spunk to you c cook. FB: What is your signature d dish? RM: My Peking Duck Soup with corn, asparagus and egg ribbons. Everyone loves it! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? RM: I would have my mum’s Pho - Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup. FB: What is your favourite food? RM: European desserts. I can turn into a professional eater if you place a plate of European desserts in front of me. FB: What is your favourite drink? RM: I’m alcohol intolerant so give me an exotic mocktail any day and any time. In summer give me a Custard Apple Smoothie. In winter, take me to a café and we can laugh over perfectly made coffee. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner?
“Bette r to be de food fo r three prived of days, th tea fo an – Chin r one” ese pr overb
RM: Actor Henry Cavill (Superman.) He doesn’t have to say anything, Her Excellency The Honourable Quentin Bryce - she can lay her wisdom on me. Her style is impeccable. Coco Chanel, Jimeoin for a good laugh and the crowd that made the Rising Sunshine youtube clip. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? RM: Buy fresh and be brave. Test out new ingredients. Hydrate your mints by soaking them in water for a few minutes. Soaking not only hydrates but kills all the bugs, and takes away dirt and sand. There is a science and art to cooking. Your dish can look like a masterpiece if you want it to. The science is the method you use. If it does not turn out the first time you try it, keep at it. People who are great at making a dish without a doubt have made it more than once. Have fun in your kitchen. Make it easy and make it fresh! Make a mess if that is what it takes.

STEP 4: Add 2 litres water and bring to a boil. Add duck bones. Cook for 15 minutes on high heat then simmer. STEP 5: Before serving beat eggs. Bring pot to medium boil. Pour in eggs and beat vigorously with a fork. STEP 6: In a small bowl add 4 tablespoons cold water and stir in 3 tablespoons of cornflour. Pour in cornflour mixture and stir quickly. Add soy sauce then season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 5 minutes on low heat. STEP 7: Serve with coriander and finely sliced spring onions. TIPS: Do not add eggs and the cornflour until you are ready to eat. The soup can be stored in the fridge for up to a day before serving. You may need to add more cornflour depending on the brand. Use the duck bones to create depth in the stock flavour. These should not be served up in bowls. Hope you enjoy making this wonderful soup and thanks again to Van for sharing her personal recipe with us. Sport Three’s the charm LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League will move to a three division format in 2014. he competition’s board conirmed the change in structure last week with the league’s 24 senior teams seen as the right number to support a third-tier. League CEO Bob Tregear said that the new structure is a great step forward for the growing future of the league. “With the successful debut seasons of our two new clubs in Manor Lakes and Sanctuary Lakes this year, as well as the inclusion of Tarneit next season, the third division allows the league to expand and cater for new club development in the future,” he said. he WRFL will follow the same structure as the Essendon District Football
League which broke into a three-tier setup in 2012. All 14 Division Two clubs will play each other once in the irst 13 rounds of the season. At the conclusion of round 13, the top eight will remain in Division Two while the bottom six will form Division hree. League football operations manager David Newton said that the third division would also allow clubs and players to participate at a level which caters for their skill. “As part of the 2010/13 strategic plan, one of the six key issues raised was the evenness of competition,” he said. “By moving to three divisions it is anticipated that the imbalance that has been evident in recent years will be reduced signiicantly.
“When analysing the 2013 Division Two competition, the average losing margin of the bottom ive teams against those in the top seven was around 20 goals. When the bottom ive teams played each other it averaged only seven goals, so therefore it will beneit all clubs in that there will be closer games more oten.” he league has also been conirmed that Werribee Districts will move straight into Division One ater crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association. he Tigers take the place of Glen Orden in the top division ater the Hawks decided it was in their best interests to stay in Division Two. It is anticipated that the drat ixtures for Division One and Division Two will be completed by Friday 15 November.
Division Two premier Glen Orden will be part of a three-tier competition next season. 10523

Clubs back divisions LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League’s move into a three division competition has been well received by clubs. With the oicial announcement made last week, the majority of club presidents who would be afected by the split said they thought the move was the best way to curb lopsided results. As one of the newest teams in the expanding WRFL competition, Sanctuary Lakes president Danny Galea saw irst-hand the diference between the top and bottom of Division Two. He said he was looking forward to a more even competition in the future. “I think it makes the competition a lot fairer,” Galea said. “If clubs go into Division hree and they are upset about losing so many games then you just have to be better for it. “You need to improve and it is up to you to work your way up to Division One. I think it is a good idea.” Albanvale president Jason Curmi also threw his support behind the three division split however, added that the Cobras would be ighting hard to remain in Division Two. Ater playing inals for 15 years in a row, Albanvale has found itself in the bottom six the last two seasons. Curmi said he was pleased the league’s decision would allow clubs to earn a spot in Division Two.
“I think the way they have introduced it is the best way to do it with the top eight staying ater 13 rounds,” he said. “If you go down then you only have yourselves to blame. I would rather do that than just splitting it right now for the start of the season. “At least it gives you a chance to stay up.” Ater being on the receiving end of a number of lopsided results during its inal year in Division One in 2012, Sunshine Heights was able to establish itself in the Division Two competition this season and made inals. Dragons president John Stewart was conident his side would avoid the bottom six but said the committee believed there were more important things than the division the club competes in. “To be honest, the on-ield success in the seniors is a nice by-product of trying to get some of the club culture right,” he said. “If we were to ind ourselves playing third division football but we had a strong junior program and we were heading in the right direction in other areas, I would not care at all which division we were playing in. “We pride ourselves on participation levels and our place in the community much more than how we are doing on the park.” he 14 teams in Division Two are, North Footscray, Glen Orden, Parkside, Manor Lakes, Wyndhamvale, Sunshine Heights, Caroline Springs, Albanvale, Braybrook, Sanctuary Lakes, West Footscray, Laverton, North Sunshine and Tarneit.

Doggies make strong charge By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater continued its strong start to the Premier Cricket season, smashing Essendon by nine wickets. After winning the toss, the Bulldogs sent the Bombers in to bat with immediate success. The bowling combination of Jake Haberfield, Hamish Winter-Irving, Michael Kelly and Sunam Gautam ripped through the batting line up in a dominating performance which saw Essendon dismissed for 96 runs in the 37th over. In reply, Footscray made light work of the total, losing just the one wicket before notching up the win in the 27th over. Opening the batting, Dylan Kight made 52 not out while Travis Dean was also not out on 23. Footscray captain Dean Russ was rapt with his side’s performance, particularly spin bowler Kelly who finished with 2/12 from 10 overs. “The deck was a little bit tacky and it gave a bit to the fast bowlers,” Russ said. “I thought Michael (Kelly) was outstanding. We thought we would get him in the game early and see how it goes and he responded fantastically. He hit really good areas and bowled with great control. “He picked up a couple of wickets later in his spell which he really deserved.” Saturday’s win sees Footscray secure a bonus point and move to a 4-1 win/loss record for the season. “It was great to be able to round off the one-day fixture with a bonus point and a comprehensive win so it has been a very pleasing start to the season,” Russ said. “We just wanted to play good

Footscray now has three two-day fixtures in a row, starting with a clash with Prahran this week. Russ said he didn’t expect the make-up of the team to change too much in the longer format of the game. “It is quite a good team that we have at the moment and it is a solid team,” Russ said.
“I think it is about doing what we have been doing for an extended period of time. The batsmen need to try and bat as many balls as possible and the bowlers need to focus on hitting the right areas. “We have good options with the ball and we bat quite deep so I can’t see it changing too drastically at all.”
cricket (through the one-day games) and we are doing that. The frustrating thing is that Richmond (round four) was very much the one that got away and there is a realistic chance that we could have been 5-0. “That happens but to be 4-1 is outstanding and we are going into the two-day format with a lot of confidence.”
Clear match focus for new coach Anderson By ADEM SARICAOGLU LACHLAN Anderson will be the new coach for Footscray in women’s Premier League hockey in 2014. Anderson, who has spent his entire hockey life with men’s Premier League outfit, Essendon, told Star he may still take the field for the Bombers if his schedule permits next season. However, Anderson has made it clear his number one priority will be his new coaching gig with the Bulldogs. “It was a very daunting process trying to move away from my lifelong junior and senior club that I’ve been involved with down at Essendon,” Anderson said. “My intentions are to play where I can, but Footscray’s women’s coaching role comes ahead of all of that and if I can fit games in then that’ll be done on an ‘as needed’ or ‘on merit’ basis.” Anderson will be inheriting a promising young group that finished sixth in 2013 under out-going coach Luke Michael. Anderson said he is excited
Footscray’s women will be led by Lachlan Anderson in 2014. 100738 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT about the new challenge ahead of him. “The club’s in a position where they’ve got a lot of young junior athletes that are developing at a rapid rate and (the club’s) obviously wanting a person to help foster that growth,”
Anderson said. “With my background in state team development and playing at a high level and that sort of stuff as well, that’s where they obviously saw value in getting me to the club.”
Along with the developmental element Anderson hopes to bring to the table, fitness and conditioning will be a key feature of Footscray’s preseason preparation. “I saw Footscray’s women play twice this year against Essendon - and it’s certainly a very talented group,” Anderson said. “It’s a group of girls that were very fit and it’s something that we’ll be working on again over the course of the summer. “We can’t afford to let fatigue be a reason for poor skill execution, but the group is very young so we recognise that there needs to also be significant technical development over that period of time.” Anderson said he’ll be on the lookout for new recruits over the summer, but it won’t be a priority. “We’re certainly very happy with the availability of players that we’ve got at the moment,” he said. “The next thing will be if we can top that up with some current high quality players - but at the moment it’s really about strengthening the young playing group that’s already within the club.”

United bats under pressure FOOTSCRAY United saved itself from an outright defeat on the road against Williamstown CYMS in the VTCA North Division on Saturday.Resuming day two with its innings stranded at 8/62, United was bowled out for 85 chasing the CYs’ 179. No Footscray United batsman posted anything beyond 20 as Andrew Walshe ran riot with the ball, claiming 7/26 and seven maidens off 17.5 overs. Going for an outright win, CYMS then set out to bat through the next 32 overs of the day, declaring its second innings at 4/117 with Damitha Hunukumbura unbeaten on 52. Chasing an unlikely 212 for victory, the Footscray United top order planted its foot at the crease to survive the final 29 overs of the game, only losing two wickets for 77 runs. Steven McKay (30) and Darren McLellan (21) were the two batsmen in the middle when the match was declared over. Williamstown CYMS is eighth on the table while Footscray United sits 11th. NEWPORT continued its promising start to the Baseball Victoria Summer League competition with a 5-0 home win against fellow Western rival, Sunshine, on Sunday. The Rams moved their record to 2-2 but the Eagles remain the only winless team in all of Division One and are currently perched on the bottom of the Conference Two table four rounds into the season. This Saturday Sunshine will travel to Doncaster while Newport will also be on the road against Preston. Meanwhile in Division Two action on Sunday, Williamstown suffered its first loss of the year, going down 8-4 away to Fitzroy. However, luckily for the Wolves, Division Two’s only other 3-0 team going into the weekend also went down for its first defeat of the year. The Werribee Giants handed Berwick its first loss of the year to move to a 2-1 record after a 5-4 win. In Division Three, Footscray went down 14-5 to Ormond. WILLIAMSTOWN has added two more big names to its 2014 playing list with Sean Tighe and Adam Marcon joining the club. A former Western Jets TAC Cup player, Tighe arrives from Western Australian Football League club South Fremantle, where he is coming off a brilliant 2013. The ruckman played in 19 games during the season and averaged 19 possessions. Tighe also finished second in the South Fremantle best-and-fairest. Williamstown’s football manager Chris Dixon said Tighe was a critical signing for the Seagulls. “He fills an important role for us and his flexibility is critical,” he said. “We’ve always said we would be chasing key position players and Sean fits that mould. “We see him playing predominately forward and also supporting Cam Wood in the ruck so it’s a really important signing for us.” “It’s great to bring back former Western Jets players to the club and we’re delighted that Sean has committed for the next two years.” MEANWHILE Marcon joins the Seagulls after three years at VFL rival, the Northern Blues. Marcon won the Blues’ best-and-fairest in 2012 as well as the VFL Coaches Award. A knee injury interrupted his 2013 campaign but he still managed 10 games and initial selection in the VFL State Side. Marcon has played a total of 40 senior VFL games and will add to the Seagulls’ emerging midfield depth. Williamstown senior coach Andy Collins said that he was delighted with Adam’s decision to join the Seagulls. “He is a quality footballer and a quality character,” he said. “Adam is excited by the opportunities that we can offer him as a stand-alone club and we are excited to work with him.”

Top tier of tennis By ADEM SARICAOGLU IT’S FAIR to say 2013 has been big for rising Sydenham tennis star, Lucas Vuradin. Vuradin, 14, recently came home from New South Wales a national champion in his age group and also collected a number of good results in other tournaments during his trip up north. Earlier this year the Maribyrnong College Sports Academy student also had the honour of representing Australia abroad, competing in a handful of tournaments in Europe against some of the world’s best juniors. Vuradin said he relished the opportunity to experience first-hand facing quality opponents on the other side of the globe. “It was such a new experience because I never played against the European kids before and they’re much more experienced than the kids down here,” Vuradin said. “Their game styles are much more different as well and I just got to know different game styles, different players and different types of courts as well.” The best of all his recent achievements, however, has been acquiring the number one national ranking. “It was pretty hard to believe at the start, because out of all these years of training and working hard and stuff like that, I’ve finally got to number one in Australia,” Vuradin said.“I’m just happy to be where I am now and I’m just trying to keep that spot going for as long as possible.” However, Vuradin has been forced to halt his progress since finishing up his recently busy schedule. The gun right-hander is expecting to sit out tournaments for at least the next month after succumbing to bone stress in his left foreman. Vuradin said he likely picked up the injury after playing for three weeks straight in Sydney. “I was just over-playing it, really, and to recover from it I’m just taking two weeks off,” Vuradin explained. “I’m currently in my second week of not hitting any backhands at all, so at the start of (this) week I’ll start getting back into it. “But it probably won’t recover for about another three or four weeks.” Vuradin hopes to one day go pro and crack the top 100.

SPOTSWOOD has appointed Tom Langlands as a playing coach for next season. Langlands was captain at the Woodsmen this year and replaces Chris O’Keefe who stood down from the top job at season’s end. “I have wanted to coach for a few years now. It was a pretty tough gig to get and I was rapt to get the nod on Monday,” Langlands said. “In the last three years with Chris (O’Keefe) we have played in a flag and had two one-point losses which are obviously shattering. “I think this is a chance to refresh the boys. Obviously it is a massive step up because at the end of the day it all comes back to the coach in terms of your results. I am looking forward to it, that’s for sure.” Langlands played for the Woodsmen as a junior before taking his football to the next level with Victorian Football League side Williamstown. After three years at the Seagulls and one season in the Ovens and Murray Football League, he returned to Spotswood in 2011 and played in the club’s premiership win against Albion. With pre-season training just a few weeks away, Langlands said he didn’t think there would be many list changes at Spotswood and was looking forward to seeing the progression of the club’s rising stars. “I have a lot of confidence in our boys,” he said. “A lot of them are Spotty juniors and the younger sort of guys, they have been through a lot now with a couple of really good finals series and a couple of tight games. “I am looking forward to seeing those guys progress with their experience and their learning. “I think we might need a couple of talls but we will be mostly OK with the players we have got. I will always back our boys.” With Langlands on field during games, Grant Smith will take on the role of senior bench coach.

Cody strikes gold Don Deeble
Rising
star By LIAM TWOMEY CODY Sylvester saves her best for the big stage. The Werribee resident competed at her first National Bowls Championships last month and wasted no time making herself at home on the greens. Sylvester and her Victorian teammates won the gold medal in the girls’ fours event. “That is the first time I have ever played in nationals,” she said. “I was nervous at the start but every end that we played I was getting better and better. Then I didn’t feel nervous at all after a while. I just wanted to keep going. “I was very surprised how well we did as a team together to get the gold.” In the team’s first match, Victoria defeated pre-tournament favourites Queensland before also notching up wins against Tasmania and New
South Wales to seal the gold. “When we played Queensland, we thought it was going to be a really hard match because they were the favourites but we just smashed them,” Sylvester said. “After we won (the gold medal), we just kept hugging. We couldn’t believe it, we were so happy. We just wanted to shout it out to everyone. It was great.” However, the 16-year-old wasn’t finished yet and was able to back up her performance with a silver medal in the girls’ pairs. There are no plans to slow down with Sylvester eyeing more success at the top level. “I started bowls because my dad plays and my grandparents used to play so I thought I would join in too,” Sylvester said. “I didn’t want to be left behind. I never thought I would get this far. “I’ve got the state pairs coming up so I am aiming to do well in that. “After that I will be aiming to get to the Commonwealth Games and just as high as I can go.” For her outstanding sporting achievements Sylvester has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in con-

CRICKET has certainly taken over from the footy now that the overly long trade period has finished. I am not a fan of the AFL taking up the headlines for the entire year. The English side has arrived and it will be very interesting to see how former Hoppers Crossing player Stuart Broad is welcomed by the Aussie fans. I have been told he is a great bloke by those that played with him at Hogans Rd but I am sure he is in for an MCG reception for the Boxing Day Test to rival that of John Snow in his heyday. The Werribee Cricket Club and Football Club Ashes Dinner has been moved to Wednesday 27 November at the Werribee Sports Club and will feature the very colourful Rodney Hogg. Tickets for the dinner are available through Janelle on 9741 9862 for $50 per person for a 2 course dinner with drinks at bar prices. IT IS the season of cricket functions and I was the MC for a roast for local legend Michael “Tocka” O’Keefe last weekend at the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Footscray greats Barry Watson and Tony Dodemaide were there for what was a great night to celebrate Tocka’s career and retirement from the game. Or at least we thought that was the case. Truth is, he played the next day in the fourths, so he could fulfil his dream of playing with his son, and who could blame him for that. There are few more genuine people in local sport than “Tocka” and I was very pleased to be a small part of the night. The video done by his teammates was priceless as was the message from his mate from Warrnambool Dave Hughes. LES Twentyman loves to bring up a cricket day from the 1980s, when he teamed up with Andrew Gibson, and I partnered Brad Hardie, in a double wicket competition at Sunshine High School to raise some money for charity. The end result was Brad and I were thrashed, I rolled my ankle and missed a game the following weekend for Hoppers Crossing. The good news was, we raised some money for the 20th man Fund, and I knocked the helmet of Les’ head with the first ball I bowled. Les has an Ashes Breakfast coming up on Wednesday 20 November from 7am in the Champions Room at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre at Albert Park. For more details contact Bronwyn on 9689 4800 or Bronwyn@20thmanfund. com.au. The panel includes Merv, Deano, Hoggy, Dodders and Tony Jones as MC. THE Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association is looking for teams for a twilight competition to be run on Thursday nights starting on 14 November and finishing in February 2014. They are looking for ladies, mens, mixed and all abilities teams to be part of the competition. For more details contact Darren Hellmann on 0413 607 645 or mhellmann@bigpond.com or the Registrar Lisa Caithness on 0413 012 376. I AM looking forward to the final few meetings of the Spring Racing Carnival on SEN. The feedback on the email, Twitter and Facebook has been fantastic. I just have to say I am not an expert so please don’t ask me for tips, I am a very green punter.
