On wings of love By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Uiver Memorial Museum Group (UMMG) has reached a longawaited milestone as the paperwork has been signed for the restoration of the Uiver memorial plane to begin. The event comes after a weekend that saw nearly double the number of people through the gate at the airport open day - a timely event which included the lining up of 20 vintage cars to form a runway in front of the DC2 Uiver memorial plane. The Albury Council and the UMMG signed a heads of agreement on Monday, which allows a community trust to be formed to take charge of the project, build a new hangar to house the DC2 and manage its restoration as a static display. “We’ve had a lot of support from both the community and the restoration industry at large to be able to achieve this,” UMMG spokesman Peiter Mol said. “The main thrust behind the heads of agreement is that it allows the way to be paved for the other documents that transfer ownership of the aircraft to a trust as per our submission to council. “We have a number people who have volunteered to be trustees so now the heads of agreement has been finalised we’ll be able to finalise the trust, take ownership of the aircraft and the trust will then become responsible for the restoration and preservation of the machine.” Mr Mol said funds to restore the plane were provided privately through his business Smart Air and anticipated the cost of restoration would be somewhere between $400,000 and $500,000. Plans to create a museum around the restored Uiver memorial plane are also featuring in a 10-year plan
by the UMMG. “We’re putting a plan together to restore the aircraft over a period of five years,” Mr Mol said. “During that period we’re looking to raise additional funds to be able to build a more permanent building for the aircraft and turn it into a museum in its own right with interrogative displays and educational opportunities. “We’re looking for volunteers to not only restore the aircraft but bring this museum to life with ideas on everything you need when trying to set up and run a museum concept. “Our aim is quite high but with the right sort of support we should be able to make it over a 10-year timeframe.” The Albury Council is providing a $300,000 interest-free loan to build the hangar and has offered to make land available for premises to house the Uiver while it is being restored. Mr Mol said the signing was the first step in keeping an invaluable story for the Albury community alive. “For me the real heart and soul of the story is more so the coming together of the community to help people that were in trouble,” he said. “The initiatives that were shown by the people who used the city lights to Morse code the signal that the aeroplane was flying over Albury, the fact that people came out in the middle of the night and parked their cars on the racecourse to form a runway, I think that ’can do’ attitude is really the essence of this story.” For more information on the Uiver and how you can be a part of its restoration, visit www.uivermemorial.org.au
Uiver Memorial Museum Group founders Ivo Mol and Nicole Fransen are excited after the signing of the heads of agreement with AlburyCity.
Huge turnout at kids’ fair OVER 16,000 people attended the 23rd Wodonga Children’s Fair on the weekend. Families were entertained, informed, engaged, educated and most importantly had fun together. Ben Russell (pictured) made the most of the paint and setting provided.

Commonwealth Government telehealth funding available to GPs and their patients who reside in regional areas. This funding subsidises the cost of the consultation. “The response from patients and GPs has been overwhelmingly positive, in fact, we’ve had over 500 GPs across regional Australia sign up to use the service so far. A big difference between Anywhere Healthcare and other telehealth services is that Anywhere Healthcare is a complete virtual medical practice which includes making appointments, reception, technology support, electronic
Wings of victory THERE has been some debate regarding the validity of pouring money into the Uiver, but one particular group has helped AlburyCity, and the general community, to remember this important piece of history. This was made clear on Monday at the signing of the heads of agreement which makes way for plans to restore the plane to its former glory. Now the ball has started rolling, it’s up to the community to put up their hands and make the most of this opportunity to be a part of Albury’s history. In some ways, this call for assistance and support is very much in the same spirit as the calls for assistance back in 1934. If the people of Albury could organise to land a plane stuck in an electrical storm in the middle of the light through Morse coding the city lights, lining up cars and then dragging the aircraft out of the mud, surely the Albury of today can offer their support to create the museum dream, restore the plane and keep the story alive for future generations. Contact the Uiver Memorial Museum Group and keep the most important story of Albury’s community spirit alive.
With the newly introduced Anywhere Health, barriers many regional specialist patients face can be overcome.

BORDER residents now have an alternative to long waiting lists, travel and accommodation costs, and time constraints when seeing a medical specialist. Anywhere Healthcare service offers an alternative means to accessing medical specialists for Australians living in regional areas. The innovative video-enabled healthcare service delivers rapid access to specialist care and will assist people living in regional and remote areas who face significant challenges accessing the specialist care they need. Anywhere Healthcare will help overcome these issues through a dedicated, credentialed panel of specialists. GPs and their patients have rapid access to unlimited appointments each week with a range of specialists including geriatricians, paediatricians, psychiatrists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, oncologist, ophthalmologist, psychogeriatrician, fertility specialist and general physicians. More specialists representing a variety of specialty areas are joining the practice each month. The service has been built around a GP-based model of care that brings patients, their GP and the specialist together to deliver patient-focused care and better health outcomes. “We are delighted to launch Anywhere Healthcare in Albury and Wodonga, Anywhere Healthcare national medical director Dr Judy Balint said. “Accessing specialist medical services in regional and remote areas of Australia can be difficult, but through Anywhere Healthcare’s virtual healthcare clinic, patients can access specialist services without having to wait a long time for an appointment or travel long distances. One of the big advantages for patients is the

storage of referrals and letters in a secure environment and a dedicated panel of specialists available for consultations. Dr Brendan Pattison from Lavington Clinic has used the Anywhere Healthcare service and found it to be a very positive experience. “Obtaining early specialist appointments can be difficult at times and telehealth certainly has a role to play in the management of some patients, he said. “The Anywhere Healthcare team was very eager to help and there were no technical issues during the consultation. I would be happy to use the service again. GPs can find out more information and contact the Anywhere Healthcare team on 1800 822 940 or visitanywherehealthcare.com.au

A hand for Uganda By KRYSTEN MANUEL A LOCAL midwife and family health nurse is taking her 30 years of experience to the extreme to come face to face with startling poverty and a devastating lack of health and education. Mary Doyle will fly to Uganda this Friday to work as a midwife for a month in a government hospital that regularly has a waiting room of around 300 pregnant women every day. “I love being a midwife and going to Uganda to be a midwife is at the extreme level of the profession so I’m bound to have my eyes opened,” Ms Doyle said. “I’m a member of the local Murray Valley Sanctuary Refugee Group and I know quite a few Congolese and Sudanese families in the area. They’ve enriched my life - they’re great people to get to know, and I know what hardship they’ve come from and what severe poverty there is in places like Uganda, Congo and Sudan. “I wanted to help just a tiny bit. I know it’s a drop in the ocean but just to experience it and see if I can do something to help.” Ms Doyle said she expected to see some confronting scenes as the many differences between Australian women and those of third world countries became immediately apparent. “I expect to see some unpleasant things - I may even see a maternal death which is virtually unknown here in Australia, but it’s common over there, and probably a lot of foetal deaths as well,” she said. “Women over there are having not just two or three babies, but eight, nine, 10 and 11 because they don’t have the education, they don’t have access to family planning and they’re still very primitive in many ways. “Only a few of them come to the hospital to have their babies. Many of them still give birth at home with traditional midwives. The ones who come to the hospital are often the ones who have been in labour for a few days and are in real trouble.” Ms Doyle said the lack of resources was also shocking, with no linen and no food provided for the mothers.

Funding helps equal playing field ALBURY public schools will welcome $2.895 million in funding in 2014 to be delivered through the NSW Government’s Resource Allocation Model (RAM). “The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government has consistently supported the Gonski Report’s key view that ’Every child should have access to the best possible education, regardless of where they live, the income of their family, or the school they attend’,” Albury MP Greg Aplin said. “The RAM delivers on this by distributing funding to schools in the Albury electorate on a needs basis,” he said. “Funding provided to schools will directly reflect the characteristics of individual schools and their students.” Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said that schools would benefit from the implementation of two new equity formulas.
Local midwife Mary Doyle is hoping to raise more funds to buy supplies for mothers and babies in Uganda. Medical supplies are also desperately needed and as such, Ms Doyle will be travelling with a bursting suitcase of medical supplies and baby clothes. “I’ve raised about $1000 so far but I’ve spent more than has been donated,” she said. “It doesn’t look like much but it’s pretty expensive - just the scales were $350.
“If I could get any more donations to help pay for what I’ve already purchased it would be great. Every little bit helps and if I have any left over I’ll be able to purchase more equipment when I get there.” Ms Doyle will be paying her own travel, insurance and accommodation costs. “The poverty is so bad and it’s easy for us to forget,” she said.

The Acacia Setting high standards 2 Ivers Place, Leneva
By KRYSTEN MANUEL THERE’S nothing worse than inspecting a display home and falling in love with it only to discover the things you might call ‘standard inclusions’ aren’t standard for the builder. Costs when building a home can always vary depending on your budget, your priorities and unique style, but with Alatalo Bros there’s no need to cringe as you ask the dreaded question ‘what’s not a standard inclusion?’ “When people walk in there they don’t need to think ‘how much extra do I have to pay to get that’?” Alatalo Bros manager Tony Moyle said. “We’re thinking of what the customer wants. We build houses and say ‘would we live in them?’ We can put our hands on our hearts and say ‘yes we would’. “So when people walk out of here with a signed contract, there’s no extras. We know that if we do the right thing by our customers, they’ll come back and recommend us.” This is one of the core principals of Alatalo Bros that has had delighted customers
spreading the word across the Border for the last 30 years ans the new display home, The Acacia is a perfect example of this. From the outside, the Panel Master garage door with remote control is standard, as is the Colorbond roof and sisilation. The garage is full brick (choose from a selection of Boral bricks) with no plaster, which carries on to the alfresco area, with brick piers, not posts. “Once inside you see we have three coats of paint on the wall – that’s not a standard thing these days,” sales manager Michelle Brown said. “The walls also feature sleek, slimline light switches which look much better – they’re not your square bulky light switch that sticks out off the wall, and we’re generous with our powerpoints, so there’s three in the master bedroom, two in the other bedrooms and a generous amount everywhere else. “There’s two sets of shelf towers in the master bedroom walk-in-robe and one set in the other rooms, with one mirror on the cupboard sliding door and drawers in every generous queen size bedroom.”
The bathroom offers tiled shower bases (tile selection from Beaumont tiles) and all fittings from Reece, with modern flick-mixers and a luxurious 1700cm Mizu bath. Obscure glass on all bathrooms is standard as well. Standard inclusions for the kitchen include overhead cupboards and pot drawers. The Acacia offers security doors on all sliding doors as well. “All our doors and windows are by Wunderbar and they are proper security doors, not barrier or flywire doors but a proper security door with deadlocks on all the doors and windows,” Mr Moyle said. “This is great for insurance purposes so you can tick all those boxes to say you’re covered. A lot of insurance companies will want to know you have deadlocks on your doors and windows.” All in all, the high standards of Alatalo Bros have made for a quick way to win over clients, who appreciate dealing with people who understand quality and ‘standard inclusions’ the same way as they do.

Don’t be late for Mad Hatter’s party By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FOLLOW Alice down the rabbit hole and you may wind up in the Albury Botanic Gardens instead of Wonderland. Children and adults alike are warmly invited to this year’s Picnic in the Gardens, taking place on Sunday 10 November. The Alice in Wonderland-themed event, which runs from 10am to 2pm, will be attended by Alice herself along with the March Hare and the Mad Hatter, who is very excited about his morning tea at the gardens. Ros Walls, Albury City Events team leader, said the picnic had been re-vitalised ever since it was moved back to the gardens, its original setting. “The picnic started back in the 1970s in the park, and then it moved around a bit but it belongs in the gardens,” she said. “Kids love the gardens.” The Picnic in the Gardens also has more than enough entertainment for the grown-ups with music being performed by the Zoot Suit Trio, while they can also stop by the Friends Annual Garden Plant Sale and pick up their own little piece of the gardens. Ms Walls said the Picnic in the Gardens was very much a “whole family” event. “The Mad Hatter, Alice and the rabbit will lead children to a lot of differ-
Last year’s Picnic in the Gardens was a great success and a similar turnout is expected at this year’s event. ent activities while there will be croquet and music for the parents to get involved with. As well as lots of food to try, everything from wood fired pizza to coffee,” she said. “A lot of families might also want to bring along a picnic rug and relax.” Plenty of effort goes into the Picnic in the Gardens, but it is definitely worth it for one of the premier events of the year in Albury. “The picnic takes a lot of work, and it’s an event that the Albury City Events
Team puts a lot of their time into,” Ms Walls said. “We start planning it in July.” Ms Walls also said that the Albury City team is expecting between 20003000 people to attend the event throughout the day. “It’s a beautiful day and we love doing it.” No RSVP is required for the Picnic in the Gardens, families are encouraged to come along and enjoy the day!

Attitude key to success By KRYSTEN MANUEL
The team – manager Tony Moyle, estimator/sales consultant Mattias Larsson, sales manager Michelle Brown and director Mike Alatalo.
FROM humble beginnings, Alatalo Bros has grown to become one of the most trusted and reliable building companies on the Border. This compounding success can be largely attributed to the values demonstrated and passed down through the ranks of the company – from its founders, John and Andy Alatalo, to the people who design your home and the hands that carefully construct it. Since the company’s establishment in 1981, John and Andy committed to attaining high standards at every stage of the building process, rapidly earning them a reputation as a leading builder in southern NSW and northern Victoria. The skill and vision of the Alatalo brothers led to home owners enjoying the building process and loving the outcome - the realisation of their dream home, just as they imagined it. “We wouldn’t have been in business for so long if we didn’t meet and exceed the needs of our customers right through the journey of brainstorming, planning, building and then handing over the keys,” Andy Alatalo said. And its this attitude you will still witness today when dealing with Alatalo Bros. “It’s our approach that sets

us apart from other companies,” Alatalo Bros manager Tony Moyle said. “We’re not out for the hard sell. People can come to us for advice and we can give them a free no-obligation quote, that’s no problem. “We don’t just consider the next sale that comes through the door’ another sale’, we treat clients like family because they’re not just a number. “We set out to understand what their needs and wants are because it’s their home at the end of the day. “And we treat everyone with equal respect. It doesn’t matter if someone that’s pulled up in a dirty old clapped-out car or someone that’s pulled up in a Mercedes – everyone is treated like part of the team, part of the family.” Honesty is also a key value at the centre of Alatalo Bros, who recognise that building a house is an extremely important investment – financially and emotionally. “We put everything on the

table, there’s no smoke and mirrors,” Mr Moyle said. “It is what it is, you get what you get and we don’t trick people.” In this way, the Alatalo Bros reputation proceeds them, with happy clients not only returning themselves, but telling their friends, family and colleagues of their exceptional experience. “Word of mouth is the best form of advertising and you don’t hear too many people speak ill of Alatalo Bros,” Mr Moyle said. “We’ve built houses nine and 10 times for the same client. They keep coming back and that tells me we’ve done something right.” And of course, being locally focused is a prime concern for Alatalo Bros. “Being a local, dealing with local trades, local people, local businesses and organisations, we’re putting the money back into the town, not big metropolitan areas,” Mr Moyle said.

Tourism focus remains on river THE Murray Regional Tourism Board (MRTB) has proudly appointed new Chair Wendy Greiner for the next three years. Ms Greiner will commence her role immediately, as announced at the recent Annual General Meeting in Echuca. Ms Greiner brings strong marketing skills to the region having worked in marketing and corporate affairs roles in the Adelaide Casino, Zoological Board of Victoria and Southcorp.
“I would like to thank outgoing Chair Geoff Kelly for his outstanding contribution to the MRTB over the past three years and for his significant tourism effort across the Murray Region,” she said. “I am passionate about the Murray Region and excited about the opportunities and challenges ahead. Together with a strong board and team we will continue to promote the development of tourism in the Murray Region with a clear strategic plan of
actions and outcomes.” Ms Greiner also brings significant governance and financial experience and relationships working across all levels of government as Mayor of a metropolitan council in South Australia for 10 years and director on several State Government entity boards including Tourism Victoria and the South Australia Tourism Commission. Existing board directors John Quirk and Steve Timmis stood for re-election and were reappointed for three years.
In the same annual general meeting, MRTB launched a Murray Region investment prospectus to support key development projects across the Murray River region. Working in partnership with state and local governments, this is a progression from the MRTB Destination Management Plan and highlights 11 priority development projects from 122 identified to fill key tourism product gaps. The product gaps include Ports of
the Murray River Strategic Initiative, Albury Riverside Precinct Development, Murray River Adventure Trail, Corowa Golf Club Investment Opportunities, Mildura Riverfront Precinct, Swan Hill Riverfront Master Plan and Pioneer Settlement Upgrade, River Red Gum National Parks Investment Opportunities, Lake Mungo Visitor Centre, Silverwoods Estate Yarrawonga, Corowa Chocolate Factory and Whisky Distillery, and Echuca/Moama 5 Star Resort and Conference Centre.
Shining light on violence By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S no secret that hairdressers need to be exceptional listeners, but local hairdresser Zoe Wilde has been hearing some pretty grizzly stuff - and she’s doing something about it. “I have clients who are going through it and I seem to be a bit of a counsellor because of my work,” she said. “What comes through the salon can be quite confronting and I often feel helpless - what can I do? I’m just cutting their hair.” October is White Ribbon Month - a month to shine the light on domestic violence and raise money for organisations like Betty’s Place. “One in four women are experiencing domestic violence and a lot of women don’t realise there’s services like Betty’s Place locally,” Ms Wilde said. “And 82 per cent of these cases are from the age of 15. That’s when I went through it and it’s scary because I often find the girls
don’t know they’re going through it. It’s often their first love and they think that’s just how it is. “Domestic violence is still such a taboo thing, everyone still pushes it aside and we wanted to raise awareness so people in the community can seek services.” Ms Wilde is holding a Girls’ Night Out function at Dragonfly House this Friday in a bid to raise awareness, finances for Betty’s House, and hopefully offer support to any women who might be living in a situation of domestic violence. “We had a meeting with some of the women who work at Betty’s place and they said that when these women flee, they often do so with just the clothes on their back,” Ms Wilde said. “So we’re trying to raise money for food vouchers, medical expenses and just to try and get them back into the community to start their lives free from violence. “I think we should get together as a community and support
something local as opposed to something bigger.” For just $30, a ticket to Girls’ Night Out will get you entertainment including singing and a racewear themed fashion parade, finger food and bubbles. A silent auction and other prizes will also be up for grabs on the night. Ms Wilde and the ladies at Dragonfly house have already received 60 RSVPs but are keen to raise that number significantly. Cash donations on the night are greatly appreciated and businesses are very much encouraged to get involved in any way possible. Businesses will be recognised with their logo displayed on a projector screen throughout the evening. Girls’ Night Out will be held on 1 November at Dragonfly House, 529 Macauley Street Albury from 5pm. Tickets are $30. For more details or to book, call Zoe Wilde on 0487 312 380 or Michelle Howard on 0408 403 139.

The newest Alatalo Bros display home – The Acacia.
Versatile design appeals By KRYSTEN MANUEL IF you’re looking to build your first home, or even an investment property, the new Alatalo Bros display home is the perfect starting point. Now ready for inspection at 2 Ivers Place, Leneva, The Acacia boasts 20.2 squares of Living attractive, modern and comfortable living, including two living areas, two bathrooms, three bedrooms and a study, plus a double garage and 31.2 square metres of alfresco area. And the best news? Almost everything you see is a standard inclusion, and what’s not will be on the short list given to you upon arrival. “When you walk into the home the doors you see, the architraves you see, the painting finish, fixtures, doorhandles, taps, sinks, baths, ovens, cooktops and range-hoods – all the things you see in that home are standard inclusions,” Alatalo Bros manager Tony Moyle said. While still being a visually appealing, modern, energy efficient home, The Acacia is also a physical example of the honest, no-nonsense service you can expect with Alatalo Bros, with no nasty surprises in the standard inclusion area. The Acacia’s design was revised several times to represent the best value for money available, while remaining flexible enough to incorporate the home-buyer’s unique needs, wants and style.

Alatalo Bros construction manager Andrew Mann said the versatility of The Acacia is fantastic. “It’s all standard inclusions, energy efficient and it’s a good size home for a small family to grow into a large family,” Alatalo Bros construction manager Andrew Mann said. “It can fit into lots of differently shaped blocks – it’s not overly wide at the front so it’s versatile, you can increase the size of it really easily with not a lot of cost by adding rooms or increasing the size across the board really comfortably. “For our standard home it’s up there with quality and versatility,” he said. “It’s not your cheap and nasty bargain basement sort of
thing. It’s all good quality furnishings and could easily be spec’d up for a higher energy efficiency.” Alatalo Bros have also changed the appliance brand to quality European brand Fagor. “There’s a three-year warranty on those appliances,” Alatalo Bros sales manager Michelle Brown said. “We changed because they have local service agents here so we can call them up and get someone out straight away if the client needs – and that’s what really matters at the end of the day.”

Socialism untaught RE THE piece (NewsWeekly, 9 October) headed “Seniors Should Stay Happy.” As stated in your paper, research shows that older people experience higher rates of depression than the general population. We should ask the question “why?” The older people weren’t taught socialism. I can state a few things among hundreds. Seeing their much-loved land being sold off to overseas countries for a starter. Immigration and multiculturism is completely out of control. The elderly were never asked, just told! Non-discriminatory immigration where anything goes is rampant at present, look around. The feeling that the elderly are in the way of the powers that be and their globalisation and the disease the politicians have, called “Asianitis,” till they feel they are being suffocated. The feeling that Australia is being invaded by foreign people with agendas like the illegals that land here unannounced with no records. One of the things that is high up the never-ending list is the lack of good leaders that really care about Australia’s land and its people. Not the sell-out attitude they have, as well as you today, us tomorrow, same parties, same agendas. The older people who fashioned this land are frightened of the future. And rightly so. Talk to the elderly and you will get your answer, “for sure.” Bill Witham, Tallangatta.
Leave them alone AS residents living in the vicinity of the fertility clinic, we have long protested against the activities of the demonstrators. Our main objection is the appalling intimidation of vulnerable women as they enter the clinic. However, we, and our neighbours, also object to the presence of the protesters every week in our neighbourhood. They are an embarrassment, and we are ashamed of their behaviour. With several of our neighbours, we have been involved in a number of actions against the pro-
testers, all unsuccessful. We have spoken to the protesters themselves; we signed a petition; we have demonstrated against the protesters; we have written letters to the council, to The Border Mail and to the police (who have always responded very positively to our concerns); and we have been to several meetings. We were also part of a mediation conducted by the police. Although the police set out the concerns of all the parties quite clearly, the protesters conceded very little, and there was virtually no change in their behaviour. As we understand it, the police can do nothing unless someone who has been harassed and intimidated makes a formal complaint. It is hardly likely a woman using the clinic is going to add to her distress by complaining to the police and going through the trauma of bringing a prosecution. Other neighbours have bravely continued trying to remove the protesters, again to no avail. The protesters can have no doubt about how they are regarded by local residents. Nevertheless, they seem to believe they have a God-given right to impose their beliefs on others, and to continue their offensive activities in our neighbourhood. L. and B. Washington, Albury.
Lack of logic DR REBECCA McGowan’s letter lacks logic and truth (NewsWeekly, 9 October). As a doctor who presumably has studied biology she must know that she argues for the right to kill what is scientifically a human being at the early stage of his or her existence. We were all once a few weeks old. The pro-life people who demonstrate peaceably in front of the Albury abortion clinic are described by Dr McGowan as “angry ... thuggish and bullying”. Her statements are untrue. Let her go and observe for herself. A legal act is not necessarily moral, as was amply illustrated during the last century. We Australians live in a country where it is illegal to kill a snake or crush a magpie’s egg but legal to kill an unborn baby. Dr McGowan should think again. A doctor’s first duty is to save life not destroy it. Bob Denahy, Holbrook.

Diabetes victory WODONGA man Bryan Watson has received a Kellion Victory Medal from the Lieutenant-Governor, Chief Justice Marilyn Warren AC on behalf of Diabetes Australia for living with diabetes for 50 years. Mr Watson lived with diabetes symptoms for 12 years before his diagnosis and was even deemed ‘fit’ for the army despite two examinations at age 18 and then 26 showing sugar in his urine. Mr Watson’s mother commented on his drastic weight loss after a visit to his home town and noticed his frequent drinking and visits to the toilet. She insisted that he visit the doctor and the night following his appointment, Bryan found himself in hospital for four weeks - also spending his 30th birthday there.
Mr Watson is content with his life now, noting the education given by his local support group, the travel-friendly blood tests (over urine tests) and the fact that others are now interested in his condition with more awareness by media exposure. “You will find that most things in life are still achievable,” Mr Watson said. Having run two successful businesses in his lifetime with his wife, and now focusing on his hobbies and charity work, he has proven this to be true. The Kellion Victory Medal was named in honour of the late Mr Claude Kellion AM, a Sydney businessman who established a foundation to promote diabetes research after his son died aged 38 from dia-
betes complications. Since 1984 more than 900 people have received Kellion Victory Medals in Australia. Victorians who have lived 50 years or more with diabetes are eligible for a medal. Diabetes Australia - Victoria chief executive officer Craig Bennett says Kellion Victory Medal recipients are an inspiration to people living with diabetes throughout Australia. “People who have lived with diabetes for over 50 years deserve our utmost respect and admiration,” he said. “We all can learn a lot from their determination and attitude towards living well with diabetes. “I encourage clinicians, educators, health services and support
groups to nominate people who have lived with diabetes for over 50 years to receive Kellion Victory Medals in the future.” Diabetes Australia - Victoria is the leading charity and peak consumer body working to reduce the impact of diabetes. On 2-6 December, the 22nd World Diabetes Congress will take place in Melbourne with 400 internationally renowned speakers and exhibitors, showcasing their diabetes expertise, research and discoveries in all fields of diabetes. People interested can register at www. worlddiabetescongress.org Right: Bryan Watson has received the Kellion Victory Medal for surviving 50 years with diabetes.

Reputation for workmanship Yika Bricklaying “ALATALO Bros are great, the greatest builders I’ve ever worked for. 90 per cent of my work is with them it’s virtually my entire business. It all started 12 years ago when an Alatalo draftsman built a house next to mine out in Kiewa. We became mates and he said ’you’d better have a trial with us’ and we’ve been working together ever since. Alatalo Bros look after their trades, they’re very loyal and run their business very well on all fronts. They’re local and they’ve been around for years, so clients can trust their stability over others.” - Shane Pianto

“I have been in business with Alatalo Bros for approximately 20 years. In 1992, we purchased a block of land and completed a house and land package with them. From there, I began contract plastering for Alatalo Bros. From a trades perspective, it’s fantastic to be in business with them as they are competent and reliable builders, as is their reputation. I would like to acknowledge the great team environment Alatalo Bros provide and look forward to an ongoing business relationship with them in the future.” - Tony Van Grinsven
“We started working with Alatalo Bros in December 1986 - so we’ve been with them for coming up to 30 years. I’ve always found the team to be very approachable, they communicate thoroughly and they have a great product. I’ve enjoyed working with John and Andy Alatalo from when they were only a small business. As they’ve grown, so has our business, and as their business takes on a second generation, so has ours. Over the years we’ve learned to understand what each other needs to achieve a good final product.” - Gary Nelson

Chrome draws a crowd By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE sixth annual Border Bike Fest has been described by organisers as “an outstanding success,” in a weekend that saw more traders on-site than ever before. “A very enthusiastic crowd, a great display of motorbikes, the most traders we’ve ever had onsite made for the best carnival atmosphere we’ve had in the six years,” Wodonga Lions Club member Michael Georgiou said. “People were saying it was the best show they’d been to, traders were saying it was the most professional, enjoyable day they’ve been to Australia-wide. “The range of bikes on display was the best ever. There were some really high-class machines there and a lot of people commented on how good the display was - the judging was very difficult.” Highlights of the day included music from Whiteline, the Loudest Bike Competition and fashion show. A new category, mini bikes, also made its mark, with organisers saying it will now be a permanent fixture of Border Bike Fest in years to come. With beautiful weather and a healthy crowd, Mr Georgiou said it was the atmosphere that really made the day. “It was a really nice carnival atmosphere,” he said. “We got some feedback from traders and the public - all had smiles on their faces saying it was a fantastic family fun day, really affordable, no alcohol, just a great day. “The support we got from local businesses, the sponsors in the local area is much appreciated by the committee because all funds raised will go back into the community through local charities. “

Tailoring solutions to save By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH a hot summer on our doorstep and utility bills making you sweat, Alatalo Bros has a wide range of energy-saving designs and devices to suit all homebuilders’ budgets. “People don’t like the (utilities) letter they get in the mail every quarter, so the best thing for them to do is to build their house to be energy efficient,” sales manager Michelle Brown said. “It helps to know how people live in their home. Do they have kids? Are they home all day? If so, a solar panel system is probably a good investment. “If they’re shift workers we look specifically at where the bedroom is - is it near the road? Do we need to double glaze and insulate better to reduce the noise and heat? “Clients will be much more comfortable and will save a lot on their power bill if you’ve taken all of that into consideration.” One of the first things Alatalo Bros looks at for energy savings and comfort on any house is its position on the block. “The orientation and the design of the home are big items you need to be thinking about when designing a home to try and keep your energy ratings to a point where it doesn’t cost you the earth to make it conform to the standard,” manager Tony Moyle said. “There’s a lot of work and a lot of thought that goes into energy saving. You pick your block of land and then
you might like a standard plan you saw on a website, but it doesn’t always work on that block. “About 99.9 per cent of the time our homes are designed to suit the block and the client’s needs.” The Acacia display home is a prime example of basic changes that can be implemented to be more energy efficient. “We have the house orientated with the living areas facing North, so it has the best orientation you can get, and clients can request double-glazing,” Ms Brown said. “We also have LED down-lights throughout which makes for a huge saving on the electricity bill - they only use 14 watts of energy per globe rather than the traditional down light which is 50, and you don’t need as many. “Ducted natural gas heating and evaporative cooling is a standard. Our systems are quite economical in that respect and they’re specially designed individually per house. Our heating system is 4.7 stars - it’s not your base three star system.” Alatalo Bros can also provide hydronic heating - an efficient in-slab system delivering clean heat that works from a boiler to pump hot water through the concrete slab. And of course there’s the buzz-word - solar power. Alatalo Bros offer all solar solutions for your home, which might be an added expense initially, but amounts to significant savings in the long term.
“Late last year we ran a special that brought in 13 sales because we offered solar energy as a package, so it is big,” Mr Moyle said. “In Victoria solar hot water is one of the biggest cost-savers for a client, we also do three and five kilowatt solar electricity systems and water tanks.” When building your home, think of the future and make every dollar count. Simple changes in the early days can deliver great savings in years to come.

2 Ivers Place, Leneva Leneva is set to become a bustling community in the next 5-10 years.
Dreams within reach– Alatalo in Thurgoona and Whenby Grange in Wodonga. “We have it covered in all directions,” Mr Moyle said. Leneva is the newest estate under the Alatalo wing, with much promise for the future. “Leneva is one of the growth corridors of Wodonga,” Mr Moyle said. “Probably not so much in the next couple of years, but there’s big plans for it in the next five to 10 years. There’s going to be a town centre with supermarkets, schools, public transport, sporting facilities - there’s big plans for it long term. “It has a great outlook, it’s a little

bit out of the city centre but without being too far away from it - it’s only seven minutes to the centre of Wodonga so facilities aren’t that far away.” Leneva is currently in its first stage, with Alatalo Bros bringing 160 lots in, estimated to take three or four years to develop. “The plan is to continue rolling the lots out as they diminish,” Mr Moyle said. “We might bring in 20-30 lots on at a time and if there’s a good inquiry rate on that, we’ll look at developing the next stage.” The Alatalo Bros Land Team is always looking for the next opportunity,
acquiring strategically placed sites for future development. Within these sites Alatalo works closely with local authorities to ensure its developments take into account planning, environmental guidelines, bushfire requirements, water management, and other concerns that include possible Aboriginal and archaeological sites. Another advantage of creating a new estate is the ability to offer clients a range of house and land options of varying size and price. With a vast range of homes your dream home in your dream neighbourhood is well within reach.

ONE of the many ways to get the most out of building with Alatalo is to take advantage of the quickly growing estates on offer - like Leneva. With the ability to acquire and develop their own land plus the knowledge and skills to build their own roads and infrastructure, Alatalo Bros can make significant savings. These are passed directly on to the home buyer when they join the Alatalo Bros family of home owners. “Dealing with Alatalo Bros, being the developer of the land and the builder, it’s like a one-stop-shop,” Alatalo
Bros manager Tony Moyle said. “You can buy your land, get your house designed, we build your house and do the landscaping - it’s all under one roof and you’re dealing with a couple of key people all the way through. “Building a house can be a fairly stressful time - it’s probably one of the biggest outlays you’ll ever make in your life, so you want to make sure you’re getting the right product, the right finishes, and the right trades people.” Alatalo Bros have been building communities for decades, with 15 estates scattered across both sides of the Border, including Fairway Gardens

Bold designs, energy and ideas By KRYSTEN MANUEL WHEN designing your dream home, the team at Alatalo Bros will not only save you money, but deliver a quality product with everything from energy efficiency to views covered. With a range of inhouse design and drafting services, you can rely on the Alatalo Bros design team to bring your ideas to life in a practical, efficient manner - and it’s all part of the service. “You can pay several thousand dollars on getting a design drawn up by an architect, but we include that in our services - why outsource an architect when you can use us to create your dream home?” Alatalo manager Tony Moyle said. “We’ve had people come in with little more than a rough drawing and worked with them to put everything together and create a proper plan fully tailored to their needs. “We get clients that have a good idea of what they want and others come in with no idea of what they want. “We work with them every step of the way on designing, planning and on-site development,” he said. “However long it takes, we sit down with them and create a plan fully tailored to their needs.
“
Each client is different. We recognise that and work with them to listen to what they need.… Tony Moyle
“Each client is different. We recognise that and work with them to listen to what they need.” Alatalo also offers the professional services of a fully qualified colour consultant. “It really is a full service,” Mr Moyle said. “There’s no pieces missing, we do absolutely everything. That means the client can be assured that the product we create for them is second-to-none.” Alatalo Bros architect Bob Bohem welcomes the challenge and variety each new client brings, not to mention the reaction to seeing the first step of their dream coming to fruition. “We do what we can to get as much of a client’s wish-list into the design and most of the time we get pretty close,” he said. “No two days are the same here, especially when you’re designing. It’s great coming up with something that’s going to make someone pretty happy.”
Mr Bohem also has a background in energy rating, with all homes designed with energy efficiency ratings in mind. “Energy efficiency is the way of the future and you have to stay one step ahead with the developments in research and technology,” he said. “Even the colour of your roof can affect the energy efficiency - it never used to be calculated but now it is. “We always focus on the same main four points: Orientation, performance of windows, insulation and draft sealing.” Mr Moyle agrees, seeing energy efficiency as an important area to stay ahead of the game with. “You have to think outside the box,” he said. “We’ve built eight-star energyrated homes before. Even the colours we put in it two years ago are starting to come into vogue now - we were a little bit bold with throwing out those colours for people to see back then.”
Alatalo design experts Bob and Nathan Bohem can turn your dreams into reality.

ALATALO Bros sales manager Michelle Brown says a big part of the company’s responsibility was educating prospective clients on what to expect in a new home. She said many people looking to build a new home were unaware that costs could escalate after the initial contract was signed.
“
Because we do everything inhouse we can have a contract in as little as two weeks… Michelle Brown
The in-house service offered by Alatalo Bros ensured clients were aware of all the costs involved in building their home. “If the design, estimates and sketching is getting done out of the office it all takes time and all takes money,” she said. “Because we do everything inhouse we can have a contract in as little as two weeks. “Ultimately we can save a minimum of two to three months compared to some builders,” she said. “That means the client is not sitting on their block of land and won’t be paying off their land while they’re waiting to get to site or get a contract.” Questions to ask your builder before you sign up for a building contract: 1. How long does it take to receive a fixed priced contract? Alatalo Bros can have a contract within two weeks, or how ever long you requires. 2. Does the estimating, sketches, designs, contracts and energy ratings get managed in-house? If not, how long does it take to get back with each process? This can cost time and money. Alatalo Bros work is completed in-house, saving time and ultimately, money. 3. Does the builder have designers/draftspersons inhouse to help with designing your dream home?
Alatalo Bros sales manager Michelle Brown keeping you in the know about the cost of building a house. Altalo Bros have a team of inhouse designers to ensure your dream home is completed to your own desires. 4. Will we have fixed site costs before signing our contract? Alatalo Bros ensure a fixed price before completing the contract. 5. Do they use local trades and suppliers? Alatalo Bros use local tradesmen and suppliers with many years experience in the region. 6. Do they have a qualified interior decorator to help you through the colour selection
process? And is this done locally? Alatalo Bros provide a complete service, including colour selections to ensure your satisfaction. 7. What else is required to be added to the base price to finish my home e.g. airconditioning, flyscreens, security doors, bathroom accessories etc. Alatalo Bros standard inclusions range ensure very little is required to complete you dream home. 8. Do they use T2 treated pine frames as standard?
Alatalo Bros combine treated pine frames with the mandatory termite protection barrier to ensure longevity of your investment. 9. Does your builder supply concrete flooring to verandah and alfresco areas if on design? If the alfresco is included in the pricing as shown on the plan, Alatalo Bros includes this as standard in their range of homes. 10. Are you getting a three-coat paint system on the walls? The three-coat paint system is included as standard on all Alatalo homes.
Built-in bushfire protection BUSHFIRE ratings are important to understand when building a new home – especially when hearing of the fires currently raging in the Blue Mountains. In October 2011, new rules came into Victoria and now anything classed as a low risk needs to comply with 12.5 BAL, or Bushfire Attack Level. By choosing Alatalo Bros to build your new home, you can be assured of complying with these rules, even in their standard inclusions package which include BAL 12.5 requirements. Alatalo Bros sales manager Michelle Brown said they had always built homes up to the current standard so nothing needs to be added to the base price to achieve BAL 12.5 compliance. Ms Brown said customers could be up for $3000 or more to bring their new home up to the minimum bushfire level if it isn’t included in the starting price of the home. The BAL package in an Alatalo home includes such features as Colorbond roof with sisalation fitted, aluminium fly screens plus many other standard features. “It’s all about ember attack,” Alatalo Bros manager, Tony Moyle said. “When there are embers floating around in the air and they get under your roof sheet and there’s nothing there to stop them getting into your roof space and that obviously creates an issue. “We have spark arresting weepers in your brick work around the perimeter, 2mm aperture fly screens on the sliding doors and the swampy on the roof has butterfly flaps on it so the embers won’t fall through into your ducting.” Mr Moyle said all external doors were well sealed which provided the added bonus of assisting with economy of heating and cooling the home. “It’s something that the client doesn’t have to think about,” he said.

The crew from Hi-5 are excited to be performing in Albury next month.
House Party gains big Hi-5 MAKE sure you give the person sitting next to you a high five because a very special group of performers is coming to Albury. Hi-5, the world-renowned children’s entertainment group, will be touring the Albury Entertainment Centre to perform their Hi-5 House Party show next month. The show gives kids the opportunity to sing, dance and party alongside their friends as the group returns to the East Coast of Australia for a very special house warming in the new Hi-5 house. Dayen Zheng, one of the Hi-5 members, said the group had been lucky enough to tour Albury last year and couldn’t wait to get back there again. “It’s so nice to get to a regional place because the Albury audience are always so welcoming,” she said. “Last year the audience loved our
show and they really get into it because they never know when we’ll be back!” Dayen said the House Party was a new type of performance from the Hi-5 crew and expected crowds to throw their support behind it. “It’s an opportunity to get out there and show the audience our new Hi-5 line-up,” she said. “It’s different from all our other shows. There is a lot of singing and a lot of new songs and it’s just like one big party.” Hi-5 have recently had the opportunity to tour Asia and Dayen felt this had benefited the whole group because they had to adapt their show to an audience where English wasn’t a first language. “It’s a different world in Asia. We went to Indonesia in March and they don’t use English there as their first language,” she said. “They actually use the Hi-5 music to
Box office
teach English over there. It means we rely on our songs and our dancing when performing in Asia and we learn how to adapt our performance.” Dayen was born in South Korea and moved to Australia in 1996 before later leaving for the Gold Coast to study dance. She was a full-time ballerina for six years before joining the cast of Hi-5 in 2012. Dayen said her favourite part about being in Hi-5 was teaching children around the world through song, dance and interaction. “I believe this is the best way to learn, not to mention a lot of fun as well!” she said. “Also being a part of Hi-5 is very rewarding. We are proud ambassadors for World Vision and Starlight Foundation and have the privilege to visit some beautiful fans in hospitals, and it such an honour to be able to make them smile.”

Tom saves the world – again By JASON BECK MOVIE: Captain Phillips (M) Starring: Tom Hanks – well, really only Tom Hanks BLAND American everyman Tom Hanks saddles up to save the world – not for the first time. There’s a lot of Oscars buzz around this one, but it’s hard to avoid the feeling we’ve done it all before. Director Paul Greengrass shoots it all in his usual shaky, hand-held cinema verite style that makes you feel like you’re watching a quasi – or is that queasy – documentary on National Geographic channel.
Hanks plays the dour captain of an unarmed Merchant Marine freighter rounding the horn of Africa. Despite the fact that no US ship has been taken by pirates in two centuries, Tom seems obsessed with the pirate threat, and can’t wait to get his bag limit. Strangely, despite the over-the-top threat level, there’s not a gun or an armed guard on the tub. Instead, they’re planning on using their fire hoses to beat AK-47 wielding Somali pirates. Hard to see how that plan could fail. Unsurprisingly, the hose idea proves a bit wet in the face of automatic weapons fire, and the pirates are soon aboard and calling the shots.
The crew leads a spirited fightback against the decidedly B-team pirates, who are soon evicted, but not before they take Tom with them. Far from being thankful, the crew seems decidedly bitter at this development … but not as bitter as the pirates crammed into a smelly lifeboat with Hanks. Being constrained by both the facts of this real-life story and the need for a Hollywood happy ending, Hanks of course survives. But it’s hard to escape the feeling that it would have been a better film if he and Greengrass had bitten the bullet.

Tell me more, tell me more By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE culmination of months of hard work came last weekend with Livid Productions’ premiere of Grease. Held at the Albury Entertainment Centre, the eager crowd got exactly what they came for, with stellar performances by local actors, including Diane Robinson (Sandy), Aaron
Bykerk (Danny), Liz Kolisnyk (Miss Lynch), Natalisha Quinn (Frenchie), Stephanie Zahra (Marty), Danielle Jubber (Rizzo), Cassie Pudney (Jan), and many more. The set was another element that had spectators in awe - two storeys complete with spinning doors, other movable parts and, of course, the car - an old
rustbucket originally found in a paddock made to shine once more thanks to Livid Productions set designer Ken Timsley. With fantastic music to boot, Grease is a show not to be missed and can still be caught this weekend. Call 6043 5610 for details and bookings.

Honda cruise in luxury By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE Honda Accord has come a long way since it first arrived in Australia as a 1.6-litre threedoor hatchback in 1977. The ninth-generation model, launched midway through this year, is a four-door sedan that’s around 20 per cent larger than that first model and comes with the option of 2.4-litre four-cylinder or 3.5-litre V6 engines. As well as growing in size over the years, the Accord has also grown in quality and is now bordering on luxury status but, despite a fairly significant hike in the price of the new model, without the luxury price of its German rivals. By their nature conservative cars rarely undergo radical styling changes and the 2013 Accord looks very much like its predecessor. Unlike most model upgrades it’s marginally shorter (25 mm) than before with a 25 mm shorter wheelbase and 10 mm taken off its height. There are now LED lowbeam headlights in all but the entry-level model, LED daytime running lights and mirrormounted turn indicators. There’s plenty of interior space and even with the sunroof in our test car there was plenty of front seat headroom. Rear legroom is sufficient for two or even three adults while the 461-litre boot is long and easy to load although some depth is lost due to it being modified to take a full-size spare. The 2013 Honda Accord comes with the same choice of four and six cylinder engines as the previous model. All engines are mated to automatic transmissions, five-
The 2013 Honda Accord offers luxury cruising at an affordable price. speed with the four-cylinder and six-speed in the V6. Accord comes with four model options. The VTi, VTi-S and VTi-L each get the four-cylinder engine while, as the name indicates, the V6L uses the V6. Honda Accord has a strong emphasis on the safety provided by crash avoidance and/or mitigation features, with many of the items in the Accord normally being seen only in upmarket European cars. These include radar cruise control, lane keeping assistance and automatic emergency braking. Not all items are standard in every model, so check with your dealer or Honda’s website for details.
Regular readers will know of our thoughts on blind spot monitoring systems - adjust your mirrors correctly and you won’t have a blind spot - but Honda has come up with an interesting system that effectively moves and enhances the view from the left-hand side mirror to the Accord’s eight-inch dashboardmounted screen. Through a camera mounted on the mirror which is activated when the left-turn indicator is activated the driver gets a clear view to the side and rear of the car. The view is not only wider than that from the mirror but, more importantly, it means that the driver can see it more clearly without the need to turn
their head away from the road in front of them. All models do get a threemode reversing camera with selectable options of a normal angle, 180-degree wide angle and top-down. Conservative buyers rate comfort above performance and Honda Accord obliges with relatively soft suspension and steering settings. On the road the Accord is smooth, luxurious and all-but silent inside thanks to its hightech noise-cancelling system. The ninth generation model takes it to the fringes of the prestige class and, despite price increases of between $3300 and $4700, it remains excellent value.

Restoring shine to pride ’n’ joy By KRYSTEN MANUEL SCRATCHES, dints, chips and scuffs - if your vehicle needs a little TLC, Andrew Radtke is your man. “A lot of people don’t understand that if a a plastic bumper has a dint, a gouge or to some extent cracks, it can all be repaired within half a day, repainted and on the road again - good as new,” he said. “I’ve repaired dints in bumpers you could sit a football in! I’ve had cars in that look like they’ve been scrubbed with straw brooms and with a good heavy cut and polish they’ve come up to a really acceptable level.”
A panelbeater and spraypainter by trade, Andrew began Border Chip and Scratch Repair in 2002 and hasn’t looked back. His business concentrates on the exterior presentation of vehicles, including repairs and re-finishing of bumper bars, to a standard, he says he would be happy with if the vehicle were his own. “I like to take personal ownership of a customer’s car when I have it,” Andrew said. “When I’m finished, it will look like a car I’d be happy to drive.” Andrew also loves working with pensioners, saying they are
great fun to work for. “I love making their pride and joy look good again,” he said. “I did a job for one couple down at Riverwood - I polished their car. They were talking about selling it because they were so disappointed with how their car looked but once I polished it up they couldn’t believe how good it looked, so they kept it.” Andrew said while many people can afford to buy an expensive, prestige vehicle, they may have limited time, and therefore can’t maintain the bodywork. The system he uses removes all road grime prior to polishing, and his water-based polishes ensure
the exterior of the vehicle, including rubbers, is well presented. Andrew said this was very important when presenting a car for sale, or simply for those who take pride in their vehicle, regardless of make, value or finances. “In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if it’s a $100,000 car or a $2000 car, I do the best job I can - I treat them all the same,” he said. Being a local his whole life, Andrew takes a great deal of pride in his work and business. He said he makes sure the finished product is the best it can be and offers a full mobile service for customer convenience.

Safe way to go bush I DECIDED to start a new four-wheel drive club, for people who don’t have a lot of time to go to endless meetings and events or have highly modified vehicles. So I put an ad in the paper for expressions of interest and after some discussion with a few interested people, The Boomerang 4WD Club was formed. The main aim of the club is to get like-minded people together to use their vehicles in the manner for which they were intended, in a safe, friendly environment. At Boomerang 4WD Club, we understand that people have to work to support their four-wheel driving addiction (and yes, it can be addictive), so for that reason there are no compulsory trips or meetings. The only requirements for vehicles are that they be standard or slightly modified (no huge suspension or tyres). Because of the restrictions on modifications and the limited trip distances that we cover, I believe that we can offer affordable four-wheel driving/camping and as the club doesn’t own property (either land or structural) we don’t have any real overheads, so we are able to keep
Connecting people and communities
www.awnw.com.au
our fees quite reasonable. We have no restrictions on who can join; we welcome singles, couples and families as well as people who may have just bought their first 4WD and are just beginning or someone who has had a lot of 4WD experience. We offer training and guidance in both off-road driving techniques and also safe family camping techniques. The Boomerang 4WD club has decided to affiliate with Four Wheel Drive Victoria and to work with them in conjunction with Parks Victoria and DEPI (Department of Environment and Primary Industries). In this way we can help with track maintenance and also help get the word out through the 4WD community about our responsibilities as four-wheel drivers regarding how we should look after the tracks and camping areas that are provided for everyone to use. Four Wheel Drive Victoria was established by eight clubs to represent the interests of four-wheel drive enthusiasts in Victoria. It is the peak body of the 74 clubs in the association supporting the recreation throughout the state, liaising with the community groups, the State
Government and its land managers. Victorian four-wheel drivers recognise that we have access to one of the most diverse and accessible park networks in the world, less than a few hours from Melbourne. We have desert landscapes, magnificent beach and forest areas, exquisite mountain ranges, including the iconic hig country and the opportunity to visit and experience the historic cemeteries, gold mines and high country huts dotted throughout our landscape. Strong camaraderie develops within clubs as members join together to build skills, travel, explore, visit and camp throughout Victoria. Four Wheel Drive Victoria and its members have an extremely strong volunteer network which willingly helps fellow Victorians in the aftermath of natural disasters as have occurred over the last few years with floods and fire. We are the envy of all other states throughout Australia and lead the way in showing how through co-operation and conciliation, major projects and objectives are met, allowing us the enjoyment we seek in our adventures.

Whitehouse Motorcycles, your local Triumph dealer.
Demo day proves a real Triumph WOW! What an amazing weekend of racing at the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. Three pulsating, exciting and spectacular races and rule changes, threatening weather and fundamental mistakes thrown into the plot, a credit to all concerned, especially the riders. As those lucky enough to have ridden to the island headed home, many of them rode through our amazing riding country, safely and enjoyably. The end of the weekend kicked off a busy week for us at the shop. We saw a fleet of Triumphs arrive here for a demo day on Saturday (26 October). As a Triumph dealer since 1995, I am amazed at how far Triumph has come. They have a diverse and sophisticated
range of modern road bikes that cover pretty much all areas of road riding, Modern Triumph’s success is all down to one man’s vision and bravery. Triumph Engineering went into receivership in 1983. John Bloor bought the name and the manufacturing rights from the official receiver and set about the resurrection of Triumph into a modern motorcycle manufacturing company with production and engineering practises to rival any motorcycle manufacture in the world. Meanwhile, he kept the heart and soul of the company in England with a state of the art manufacturing facility and head office located at Hinckley, Leicestershire. As one who has been fortunate
enough to tour the factory, I would highly recommend any one travelling to England, to book a factory tour. The thing I love about Triumph is that while it is a thoroughly modern company with manufacturing plants throughout the globe and plans for expansion in both production and models, it never loses sight of why we enjoy riding and manages to build soul into every bike it produces. To finish off our busy weekend and top off a great week in motorcycling, there were also a range of bikes from Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Triumph on display at the Border’s biggest bike show The Border Bike Fest on Sunday (27 October).

Family retreat ready for adventure AN interesting property is for auction on Saturday 16 November when 3 Hobbs Close Yackandandah is to be sold - interesting in the fact that there are so many positive facets to the home. Built about 30 years ago by a retired couple the three bedroom brick veneer has been well maintained and of course is beautifully presented for sale. The home is on 9600m2 - just under a hectare, or for those of the imperial measurement age just short of 2.5 acres - and is located within the town boundary, thus it could well a proposition for subdivision subject to council approval. Prospective purchasers would be prudent to contact Indigo Shire planning department to seek clarification of the future possibilities. Should the response be in the positive then a block could easily be sliced off the side that would not interfere with the views from the home. The home, as mentioned has been well looked after and is ideal for a family. Entry is via the designated main entry which opens to a dining or family area and a near new kitchen. A freestanding solid fuel burner keeps the home toasty warm in winter. A large lounge room has a vaulted ceiling that adds real character to the residence. There’s also an open fire place and a window that offers stunning views over farmland to hills that surround this popular township just 25 minutes to Wodonga. Each of the bedrooms is generously sized with the main having a Fujitsu wall-mounted inverter airconditioner positioned to heat and/ or cool the bedroom as well as other parts of the home.
A similar type of air-conditioner is in the dining area. The home was designed with a third bedroom in mind or a good sized study. The bathroom contains a bath, shower recess, vanity unit and internal toilet. There is also an external toilet. The carport is located so as to allow entry to the home under cover so that should the weather be inhospitable one can get inside and remain dry. Externally, there is a large powered workshop or garage, a designated woodshed as well as a small fernery area. The garden area is low maintenance and bursting with spring colour. On school days one can hear the laughter and sounds of children playing at the local kindergarten which is located across a creek at the back of the property. The land slopes down to a small creek that meanders through the property and would be ideal for a house cow or maybe a horse. The real attraction of the block would be for young children who love to have a bit of outdoor adventure and get away from the electronic devices. There are several large granite rocks and a bit of scrub as well but the endearing feature is they are still playing in their own back yard. Really, 3 Hobbs Close is a winwin for everyone! It is a comfortable home with lovely spacious gardens sensational views, a great workshop and potential subdivision (STCA). And there’s space for the kids to get back to life as it used to be - outside running around and being kids.

Local Sport ‘Big Sexy’ makes a mark By KRYSTEN MANUEL
Albury athlete Chris “Big Sexy McDonald takes out his second Ironman competition in a month at Lake Tahoe. its to try and get warm at the start, but I knew that would come back and haunt them when it warmed up a little. “I knew it would be a race of attri-
tion because of the cold. “I didn’t take the lead until towards the end, which was completely different in comparison to Louisville where
Victory from Mayhem By KRYSTEN MANUEL, THE Murray River Derby Dames’ (MRDD) Murray Mayhems have scored another victory over the weekend in a bout against the Wagga Derby Dolls’ Murderous Crows. In a thrilling showdown at the Lauren Jackson Sports Stadium on Saturday, the home team took out the competition with a score of 377 to 191. “That bout was awesome! MRDD president Jo Lindsay said. “I was very happy with the girls. For the first half they were a bit rough but they warmed up within the first 10 minutes.
“In the second half the girls really got themselves together, they came out very strong and wrapped up those points like nothing else, I was very proud of them. “I don’t think I’ve seen them play like that before and it was very exciting. “Wagga had their game on as well which was great for us. Most Valuable Player went to jammer Wicked Distress, while Most Valuable Blocker went to Black Ice. “Those two girls did an amazing job, not just because they won prizes but they played exceptionally well and stood
out to the crowd on the night. Next up for the MRDD is the last bout of the season in Geelong on 23 November against the Virgin Marys. “The last game we played the girls they had about 40 per cent of their team made of A Grade players which was great experience, Lindsay said. “Even though we lost, they put up such a good fight. We had those girls come up to us at the party and say ‘you really made us work for those points.’ To have the feedback from such established players in Geelong was fantastic and we get to do it all again!

ALBURY’S own Chris “Big Sexy McDonald has done what no other man has done and won two Ironman competitions within a month, making him a six-time champion. The winning streak began late in the season with the Ironman Louisville, followed by Ironman Lake Tahoe 28 days later, but it wasn’t without a massive challenge. “The temperature at the start of Ironman Louisville was about 30 degrees with a high of 40, but the temperature at the start of Tahoe was about -2 degrees with a high of about 10, McDonald said. “When it was starting there was ice on the roads, ice on our bikes, it wasn’t ideal conditions for anything – that and it was at about 7000 ft of altitude, so it was higher than anywhere you can train in Australia all together. “I expected it to be very hard and very cold, but I don’t think anyone expected the temperatures to be what they were. It was a shock to the system, especially when you’re getting out of the water wet and getting on a bike for 180km. So how did he do it? “More than anything I had to be patient, he said. “People would go outside their lim-
though fitness wasn’t always such a big part of his life. McDonald used to bake at Baker’s Delight before deciding to follow in the footsteps of his older brothers. “I had two older brothers – eight and nine years older than me, he said. “They were doing triathlons so I followed my older brothers into it. It was kind of an ‘anything you can do I can do better’ attitude – sibling rivalry. From baking to swimming 25km, running 100km and cycling 600km a week as a professional Ironman, McDonald still carries a little of his history around with him in his nickname – Big Sexy – the ‘big’ part going back to a plumper time in his life, the ‘sexy’ part coming through Ironman. McDonald will travel home to Albury for Christmas with a twist this year, as he prepares his family for Ironman Texas. “My Dad, who has never done a triathlon, has signed up to do Ironman Texas, McDonald said. “So he, at 67 years old, is going to do his first Ironman with myself and my two brothers. We’re all going to line up in the same race – I think it’s the first time that’s ever been done! The race will be held next year and is composed of a 3.9km swim,180km bike ride and 42.2km run.
