TRUCE CALL IN PROPERTY AD WAR - P8

Assets sale call linked to Kennett By NOEL MURPHY A MAYORAL candidate has attacked former premier Jeff Kennett after a consultancy he chairs suggested City Hall could sell off assets worth $56 million. Anthony Aitken questioned how council commissioned Mr Kennett’s CT Management Group to undertake a review of its finances without the job going to compulsory competitive tendering, which the Kennett Government implemented at Victorian councils. The review, which ex-mayor Keith Fagg ordered as an independent analysis of council finances, suggested the possible sale of Old Geelong Gaol, Osborne House, Elcho Park, Queen’s Park and the Balyang par-three golf courses. A month earlier Mr Kennett was reported calling for administrators to replace councillors if they were unable to work out governance issues related to council’s $7.2-million-a-year ward funding scheme. Mr Aitken said the independence of the CT Management Group report was “prejudiced” because Jeff Kennett’s involvement was undisclosed and he had “a stated position to sell-off community-owned assets”. “Why was a quotation process and not competitive tendering process used to appoint CT Man-

ATTACK: Anthony Aitken. agement Group to undertake the review? “Only with the answers to these questions can community confidence be restored in the report.” Mr Aitken backed acting mayor Bruce Harwood’s opinion that council’s finances were “in a very strong financial position”. Mr Kennett hit back at Mr Aitken, saying council ticked off

all probity regulations before appointing CT Management. He accused Mr Aitken of “being electorally irresponsible” to curry favour with voters. “I’ve read the report and, yes, they’ve identified a number of assets owned by the greater Geelong council that either lie idle (or) are in excess of need and some are assets where CT Management has asked questions whether these are assets that a council should necessarily be owning,” he said. “I have no qualms about the process that led to the appointment of a Geelong-based firm that works Australia-wide. I’m very proud to be chair of it and can assure the community everything is above board.” Mr Kennett said councils across the country were considering asset sales to enhance synergies and efficiencies. “My comment to this prospective mayor is that, if he is trying to curry favour by being electorally irresponsible, ratepayers should put him last on their ticket,” he said. Cr Harwood said the CT Management report cost less than the threshold requiring a compulsory competitive tendering process. “We got three quotes for the work to be done and CT Management was deemed the most appropriate and that’s why it was chosen.”

AUSTRALIAN Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating allegations the Geelong Advertiser has engaged in predatory pricing activities since the arrival of competitor The Weekly Review. Geelong real estate agents told the Independent that ACCC representatives had interviewed them in sessions of up to 45 minutes as the corporate watchdog gathered information on alleged advertising rate cuts, kickbacks and free deals. The agents said “a great deal” was going on “behind the scenes” with the ACCC.

The ACCC refused to comment on its inquiries. The agents, who declined to be identified, said the ACCC initially contacted them by telephone and later arrived for interviews, sometimes with multiple investigators. “They were gathering information regarding rates, what we were paying, what we’re up against now and regarding other publications,” one agent said. “I’d been told by Advertiser staff there would be a war and that News (Corp) had deep pockets and would try to push The Weekly Review out of the marketplace.” Another agent said the ACCC was trying to establish what

agents who moved their advertising between The Weekly Review and the Advertiser paid “before and after and whether the rates were anti-competitive”. Another accused the Advertiser of “heavy-handed tactics” since the arrival of the Review. “It’s basically a fact-finding mission. They’re gathering their information and lining up their ducks.” MMP, which publishes The Weekly Review, declined to comment. News Corp Australia corporate affairs said: “Thank you for the opportunity but we are not going to comment”.

RetailWoolies, boost for north Masters on way

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

LARA and Geelong’s northern suburbs are in for a massive retail boost with the approval this week of a new Woolworths supermarket and a Masters homewares store. The supermarket development is part of a $70 million Lara town centre expansion project, including a new $3 million bowling club and greens. Ward councillor Tony Ansett expects the two latest retail developments to generate 450 jobs. The Woolworths supermarket, set to begin construction in February, will replace a small Safeway store. The full-range supermarket will include a large market-style fresh produce area,

a wider variety of grocery products and an updated car park. A Woolworths spokesperson said the new store would create around 120 construction roles and a further 60 jobs once the store was complete. Site works have already begun on a Lara Coles supermarket and associated speciality shops, a chain store, two cafes and a McDonald’s restaurant. The Lara Town Centre expansion also includes a skate park and parkland, with a realignment of Station Lake Rd. Cr Ansett said the green light for

the developments was a huge boost for Lara. “This will create 200 jobs in Lara alone, with about 450 all up if you include the Masters store. “This is well and truly needed in the north. This makes a huge difference to jobs and creates more competition in the town,” he said. “We’ve gone from years of frustration trying to get it going to it all happening with a rush now.” Lara Chamber of Commerce president Lorel Robinson said the developments would help the town

shed its “sleepy hollow” tag. “This will put us on the map,” she declared. “This will be so fantastic for the community, its going to be amazing. It will generate a lot of jobs, a lot of money in the community. “There will be opportunities for community support through sponsorships for schools and sporting groups. “It’s been a long drawn out saga but it marks the start of the growth of Lara. “It means millions of dollars coming into the area through the housing developments, the expansion of Avalon and it will stop some leakage of retail spending from the town.”

In brief Flows change SEASONAL water flows into wetlands between Geelong and Barwon Heads have changed “substantially” in the past 15 years, a new report states. The Bureau of Meteorology report said “normally very much above average” winter and spring flows into Lakes Reedy and Connewarre had declined, while water entering in summer and autumn was now “much more pronounced”.

Highway upgrade A $1.4 MILLION upgrade will improve safety and traffic flow on a stretch of road notorious for rear-end crashes at Belmont, regional MPs have announced. South Barwon’s Andrew Katos and Corangamite’s Sarah Henderson said the governments were jointly funding the improvements to Surf Coast Hwy between Kidman Ave and Settlement Rd, including extension of a right-turn lane.

Legal demand ALMOST 2900 people sought help from Victoria Legal Aid’s Barwon office last year amid “ever-increasing demand”, according to a spokesperson. Managing lawyer Pat Tainton said the service dealt with family law issues, fines, debt and criminal matters, as well as help clients sort Centrelink issues.

Daryl’s jacket a true blue witness of life and times By NOEL MURPHY CLOTHES make the man, so say commentators from Shakespeare to Mark Twain, and Geelong Ford worker Daryl O’Connor is hardly one to disagree. For the past 30 years he’s been regularly garbed in a blue Ford jacket that has been witness to all the major events in his life. Mr O’Connor clocked up three decades of service at Ford this week,

marking the occasion with a special dedication to the weathered true blue that’s kept pace with some of the best days of his life. “In some ways it’s become a metaphor for my life and I’ll be buggered if I’ll part with it,” he said. “I wore this jacket when I first met my future ex-wife, I wore it to the footy when I watched Gary Ablett senior kick his 100th goal, I was wearing it when I told my workmates I was going to become a father for the

first time and I was wearing it when I was told to rush into the hospital because I was going to become a father for the second time. “I wore it when we marched from Ford to Rippleside Park in a bid to retain jobs in our city, I wore it when we marched in support of Geelong nurses and again in protest against Workchoices. “I was wearing it as I watched the parade down Malop St after Geelong won the AFL premiership in 2007.”

Mr O’Connor was also wearing the jacket when Ford dropped its bombshell, announcing the impending closure of its manufacturing after almost 90 years in Geelong. The jacket saw “many a tear shed by fellow workmates as they pondered their future and struggled to come to terms with the news”, he said. “It’s been covered in grease and oil and been through the wash as many times, as I have myself.”

I want to lead a dialogue about meaningful and longterm employment positions in the CBD, the Bellarine Peninsula and Greater Geelong. As an experienced councillor and mayor, I know what it takes to lead our great city and tackle the issues we face. I’ve worked and grown in this community my entire life. When I was Mayor I increased funding to our libraries and community sports facilities because I believe our kids deserve the best. My vision for our community is one where the mayor and council are directly accountable to the ratepayer. To keep our city great, we need job security for working families. Together, we can do this.

Home repossessions rise 50% By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN HOME repossessions in Geelong’s northern suburbs have risen significantly despite historically low interest rates. Sherrif’s Office figures show delinquencies on mortgages in the 3214 postcode of Corio, Norlane and North Shore were running at 2.3 per cent in September, up from 1.5 per cent at the same time last year. The local figures were part of an increase in mortgage defaults across Victo-

ria, with six homes repossessed weekly. The Sherrif’s Office executed 318 repossession warrants over the past financial year in Victoria despite interest rates falling from more than 4.5 per cent in October 2011 to 2.5 per cent since July. Financial counsellors said job losses were the main reason for the spike in repossessions. Consumer Action Law Centre chief executive Gerard Brody said the figures were “probably the tip of the iceberg of those who are struggling”.

“The large number of redundancies in Geelong affects the figures, when you consider Alcoa, Ford, Shell and Target. “The ramifications of a significant event like losing a job are greater these days because the job market is less secure. “A job is no longer for a lifetime, as more employees are on a causal basis or have intermittent work. People who were full-time employees 30 years ago now are contractors doing the same role but bear the risk of any decrease in work. “It makes financial management chal-

lenging, particularly with a mortgage being such a large financial commitment. “It can happen to anyone if you’re locked into your income in order to pay the mortgage.” Mr Brody said a low interest rates could tempt borrowers to take on mortgages without considering the possibility of future rate increases. “New borrowers or those refinancing should think about the prospect of interest rate rises and factor that into their budgets. Some mortgage brokers

put people into loans that look affordable with low interest rates but become unaffordable with interest rate rises.” Mr Brody encouraged anyone in financial hardship to seek advice. “Get on the front foot and talk to your lender. It’s too late if the sheriff is at the door. People do have rights under our credit laws for hardship assistance and can be offered assistance such as repayment holidays or reductions of interest.” Consumer Action Law Centre’s MoneyHelp line is 1800 007 007.

Council funds young leaders’ diversity trip to Nepal NDIS office work By KATE VALLENCE ‘begins in weeks’ GEELONG’S council will provide $6000 for seven “young community leaders” to film in Nepal a documentary about diversity. Councillors voted last week to give the Climb Above InTolerance project $3000 after it asked for $1000 for the trip to climb Mera Peak. The council had already provided $3000 from an arts community grants program. Climb Above InTolerance trek leader Brad Clarke said the project would develop participants’leadership skills, in turn benefitting their communities. Mr Clarke, who cited more than a decade of experience as a youth worker, said he was working with Geelong charity support agency Give Where You Live and multicultural services provider Diversitat to raise funding for the trek. “The purpose of the trip is to invest in our young community leaders, get them out of their comfort zones and challenge them,” he said. Mr Clarke said the group had been training hard, completing a walk between Geelong and Airey’s Inlet. Council multicultural affairs portfolio holder Eddie Kontelj said the project was an exciting, unique opportunity for the participants. Council’s community arts funding supported the development and delivery of projects that “enrich the community and maximise community inclusion”, he said. “Strict guidelines are in place to ensure the group produce what they are setting out to do.” Mr Clarke said after the trek he would work with participants to complete and screen the documentary locally.

WORK on the National Disability Insurance Scheme Geelong head office will begin “in the next few weeks”, according to the organisation. NDIS communications manager Dougie Herd said a construction manager had been engaged. “It is anticipated work on the Geelong national office will be completed mid-2014.” The NDIS will be headquartered in a refurbished office building at 43 Brougham St, opposite TAC’s head office. The selection of the site in Geelong’s waterfront precinct followed former mayor Keith Fagg’s call in the Independent for the office to be in the central city area. The interim head office will have about 100 permanent staff before eventually moving to larger premises, according to then-disability reform minister Jenny Macklin. The new office will accommodate national operations management, a chief executive officer and executive support and corporate services. About 300 permanent staff members are expected to be located at the headquarters once the scheme is fully rolled out from 2019/2020. About 120 NDIS staff are working in the Barwon launch office, which opened in July. Former federal disability minister, Jenny Macklin, recently raised fears the Geelong NDIS headquarters would not go ahead and the scheme scaled back.

Angelo Houses, schools in Kakouros gas ‘heat flux zone’ By KATE VALLENCE HOMES, schools and community facilities will be within a high-pressure gas pipeline’s “heat flux zone in a new development at Lara. An independent planning panel report recommended that schools and community facilities should be “entirely outside the heat flux zone and that buyers of blocks within it should be notified. But councillors last week agreed to seek approval for a planning scheme amendment showing the zone would include some homes and parts of two schools and a community centre. The zone is part of a pro-

posed 390-hectare Lara West development for 11,000 residents. The amendment will go to Planning Minister Matthew Guy for approval. City Hall planning general manager Peter Bettess said Energy Safe Victoria, the state’s independent regulator for gas pipeline safety, had signed off on the development. Energy Safe Victoria said it was satisfied with the risk assessments of council, the developer and the pipeline operator. “Australian gas pipelines have a very safe history but compliance with these processes cannot guarantee the safety of all parties in all eventuali-

ties, such as pipeline ruptures, Energy Safe Victoria said. The report to council said a Section 173 Agreement on land titles would notify prospective buyers of land within the heat flux zone. Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) executive officer Tony De Domenico said he was aware of the pipeline issue. He expressed concern about the level of regulations facing developers. “Houses all over Melbourne and wider Victoria have been built near major underground infrastructure, Mr De Domenico said. “The notification on the

land titles could affect land sales in the new development. However, prospective buyers shouldn’t worry about buying a block in Lara West. “Its nannying gone mad. Council planning portfolio holder Rod Macdonald said City Hall would write to Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure seeking an investigation of overlay controls on high-pressure gas pipelines in planning schemes. “This would protect the pipelines from inappropriate development and ensure appropriate conditions were placed on land within pipeline measurement lengths, Cr Macdonald said.

HELPING a customer’s new business find its feet has turned into a reward of its own for Geelong West’s Direct Decorators. Colour consultant Justine Leach said Direct Decorators’ Paula Grembka helped her “enormously with fabric and wallpaper ideas. Ms Leach was so impressed she nominated Ms Grembka and her business for the Independent’s monthly Shop Local Geelong Customer Service Award. “Her product knowledge is incredible and she has served old and new customers for decades, including wallpapers for some of Geelong’s heritage homes, Ms Leach wrote in her nomination. The Independent presented Ms Grembka with her Shop Local award for October this week. Asking whether she put a high priority on service drew an emphatic response. “Absolutely, Ms Grembka said. “It’s certainly what I’m about and it’s why I’m still here after more than 25 years. The customer service award is part of the Independent’s Shop Local Geelong campaign, encouraging shoppers to spend locally rather than online or out of town. The monthly award, offering a $1000 advertising package with the Independent and its EasyFinder business directory, rewards businesses for excellence in customer service. Nominations, with the sender’s name, address and phone number, should say in 50 words or less why a business deserves to win. By NOEL MURPHY A BITTER legal fight between The Weekly Review and Geelong real estate agent Hayeswinckle has been settled out of court. The brawl included allegations of a $200,000-plus deal for Hayeswinckle to resume advertising in the Geelong Advertiser after the agency joined 25 others in leaving the newspaper to become shareholders and advertisers in the Review, part owned by Fairfax Media. MMP Greater Geelong, which publishes the Review, initially lodged a $1.4 million County Court writ against Hayeswinckle. The writ alleged the real estate company was contracted to spend $470,000 a year with the Review but broke the contract at the behest of News Limited, now News Corp Australia, mother company of the Advertiser. The Review claimed Hayeswinckle was to receive $50,000 a year, hospitality and a diamond

NO IDEA: Hayeswinckle’s Danny Hayes and Michelle Winckle. ring from the Advertiser as part of the deal. Hayeswinckle managing director Danny Hayes argued he was being bullied in a media war and was prepared to lose money on his Review shareholding dividend to give vendors a choice on which newspaper advertised their homes. In recent weeks, Hayeswinckle has been advertising homes for

sale in both the Review and the Advertiser. Melbourne’s County Court confirmed the stand-off was settled by consent. When questioned about the settlement, Mr Hayes told the Independent: “I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about.” MMP issued a statement saying: “All disputes between MMP Greater Geelong Pty Ltd, the Publisher of The Weekly Review Greater Geelong, its director Antony Catalano and Geelong real estate agents Daniel Hayes and Michelle Winckle and their agency Hayeswinckle Agent have been settled. “The terms of the settlement are confidential, however, as part of the settlement all legal proceedings will be discontinued with denials of liability by all involved parties. “There will be no other statements made about the disputes or the settlement.”

New plan targets Avalon corridor By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A NEW Melbourne Plan has renewed hopes a major logistics facility will be located close to Geelong. The State Government plan recommended identifying longterm freight and logistics opportunities related to Avalon Airport in the area between Geelong and Werribee.

The long-term planning blueprint cited the Wyndham-Geelong corridor as one of three major economic drivers for the state. The area between Geelong and the South Australia border was identified for freight and logistics development. “The Avalon corridor between Werribee and Geelong contains existing and planned nationally

significant economic assets including airport, road, rail, and waste facilities,” the plan said. “Given the range of constraints on the availability of land for development, it is important that this stretch of land be safeguarded for state infrastructure opportunities and complementary development in future.”

PREPARE YOUR HOME THIS FIRE SEASON Each property owner should consider their individual fire-risk, especially if you’re near paddocks, grassland or bush. With the grass growth in paddocks and along roadsides this summer there is the potential for severe fire events, particularly in rural areas. Clearing the vegetation surrounding your home will minimise your home’s exposure to radiant heat and direct flame, which will slow the speed and intensity of a fire. Without this space, your home may not survive the fire front. If you are caught out at home when a fire hits, this space around your home may increase you and your family’s chances of survival. Tips for preparing your home include: • Leaf-free gutters – Keep gutters clean and install leaf guards or a leafless guttering system.

• Vegetation near the house - Clear vegetation from around the house, keep grass less than 10 centimetres high and remove weeds.

• Mulch - Use stones or pebbles or decayed humus mulch, instead of woodchips or dry straw. Keep it moist. • Gardens – Avoid plants with high levels of oils in their leaves such as eucalyptus and tea trees, which are highly flammable. Cut all branches back off the house.

• Metal flyscreens – Install metal flyscreens on windows, chimneys, doors and vents to keep out embers.

NEWTOWN has retained its Victorian title as the area with the highest average income for its residents outside of Melbourne, according to a new report. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) report also ranked Torquay and Geelong in the top five for regional Victoria, all above the state average of $51,398. With an average total income of $61,412, Newtown also recorded an annual growth rate of 4.8 per cent from 2005/2006 to 2010/2011. Torquay recorded a high average total income of $52,996, a 5.8 per cent increase. Geelong’s was $52,436, an increase of 4.6 per cent. The local areas were among 27 per cent of Victorian suburbs to record total incomes above the state average. ABS sourced its suburban income information from Australian Tax Office setting out the number of income earners and amounts they received from various sources. Melbourne’s Toorak recorded the highest average total income in Victoria, $150,548. Kerang ($31,997) and Maryborough ($32,904) recorded the lowest annual average income levels in Victoria for 2010/2011. The report indicated residents in Australia’s cities recorded significantly higher incomes than counterparts in regional Australia. The highest-paid regional workers were in the Western Australian mining centres of Karratha and Port Hedland where average earnings were $86,826 and $86,079 respectively.

QUILTING and the internet would not seem, at first blush, to be bosom buddies - one a time-honoured craft, the other taking over modern communication. But the internet has facilitated a loose network of quilters all over Australia, including a dedicated band locally, to band together for a common cause. While piecemeal approaches rarely get the best results, it has worked wonderfully for Comfort Quilts Against Cancer. Bannockburn quilter Heather Corbett is one of around 30 local crafters who have turned their talents into a wonderful morale boost for women going through the challenge of breast cancer. “Back in 2011 I saw an email sent to various Yahoo groups interested in machine embroidery and sewing,” Heather recalled. “It was from a lady in York, Western Australia, who said that while a lot was being done to raise money for cancer research it seemed there was not much being done for cancer patients. “Often after they had their treatment they needed a boost in morale and an anonymously donated quilt becomes amazing therapy. “It came through at a particular stage for me as I was close to a cousin who had been battling breast cancer for 20 years. The last 15 months of her life were particularly hard. “I’m a member of an embroidery group in Geelong and I asked whether we could put aside some of our projects to make quilt squares to send to WA. “So many women are getting treatment for breast cancer that each one of us knew someone in treatment, so it’s a project close to all our hearts. “It just multiplied from there, with ladies making quilt squares and sending them over where they’re finished and distributed. “We had more and more ladies offering to help or to do the quilting once the squares were finished. We’ve now done nine quilts.” Heather said the finished quilts were sent to women as a result of recommendations from friends and nursing staff in cancer centres and hospitals. Recipients included local breast cancer sufferers. The Comfort Quilts group also held coffee mornings and a sew-a-thon to raise funds for the cause, generating about $500 and some 12 finished quilts into the bargain. Heather said little external motivation was needed for the cause, with the members needing to look no further than a typical letter from a quilt recipient. “I really do not think words can adequately express how much the receipt of this quilt has meant to me,” one recipient wrote back. “For a number of reasons I have been having a bit of a hard time over the last month and I was feeling a bit down. “Our financial situation is a bit tight at the moment and I think my husband thought I had been spending money we did not have. “You just cannot imagine the feeling of pure joy and elation that came over me when I opened the parcel and saw the contents. This just lifted a weight off my shoulders. “It seems as though whenever I am in dire need something occurs to reaffirm my faith in the world and all the people in it.” More information on Comfort Quilts Against Cancer is available on Facebook or by phoning Heather on 5281 2151 or emailing hgcorbett@yahoo.com.au.

Letters ON 18 October about 1.30pm I, too, saw a strange animal by the side of the road as I was driving to my family’s property at Anglesea (Independent, 25 October). I later told my husband what l saw and actually said to him: “lf it wasn’t for the fact Tasmanian tigers are extinct I’d think I just saw one”. It was a mangy-looking orangey-brown animal with a skinny tail but without stripes on its body and was sort of hunched over as it waited for my car to pass before it presumably crossed the road. My husband said it was probably just a fox moulting. I know what I saw and it wasn’t a dog or a fox! I couldn’t believe it when I read the Independent’s story about Harry Cook and the couple who also saw it - it was just as they described. Amanda Ketteridge Macleod

Big cats promise broken I WOULD be interested to hear from readers who claim to of seen Tasmanian tigers or big cats in the Geelong region (Independent, 25 October). The state coalition promised me in writing before the last two elections that, if elected, it would “end the big cats issue once and for all”. Sightings and stock loss attributed to puma or panther-type animals continue and State Government, which includes Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos, has broken its promise. It’s business as usual for the incompetent and unaccountable Public Sector Union-dominated, $1 billion-year-taxpayer-funded Department of Environment and Primary Industries. Farming communities have been hung out to dry, public safety issues abound in Victoria’s poorly managed parks and tourism opportunities concerning Tasmanian tigers, which have been seen in the Surf Coast and Otways since at least the 1930s, are being lost. To report a sighting, stock loss et cetera please phone me on 0434 904 944. Michael Moss Richmond

Funding makes difference WHILE criticism has appeared in the local press regarding City of Greater Geelong’s Community Priority Projects ward funding system, there has been little acknowledgement of its benefits for local communities (Independent, 4 and 11 October). The system ensures each ward receives an alloca-

Chemicals proof of our bleak future APPARENTLY we are no longer permitted to object to the siting of a chemical storage facility next to residents at North Geelong because Teleta has discovered that the area is zoned for chemical storage and the company no longer needs council’s permission to store chemicals (Independent, 18 October). We may continue to object but not on the old grounds of safety. We can object to the building or the grounds or anything else and we may even bring those objections to the next council meeting for the council’s consideration. I retain my objection in principal to the siting of chem-

FLASHBACK: The Independent’s 18 October story. icals near human habitation. I do not care one whit about the building’s appearance. Even if North Geelong was once zoned for chemical storage, surely when the suburb becomes more residential council can be expected to rezone the area for the protection of its residents.

tion of monies to be utilised for its priority projects. These monies are, after all, provided from funds contributed by ratepayers who live in the wards. The system has made a visible difference in several areas, helping to counteract the previous funding bias toward central Geelong I have been particularly impressed by long-overdue improvements to Portarlington and Thomson recreation reserves for the benefit of families and youth sports bodies. Anything providing young people with healthful sports facilities can only be for the betterment of the whole community and help combat some of the adverse social activities prevalent in the greater Geelong district. Surely amenities assisting the development of our youth must be considered a priority. There is little doubt we would have waited even longer had this funding system not been in place. The fast-growing St Leonards area has also benefited from the recent development of a St Leonards Lake Walking Trail, an attractive community asset freely available to all. This is another valuable development providing the community an opportunity for healthy activity. I commend councillors and St Leonards Progress Association members who have worked well together to establish both this excellent walking trail facility and signage valuing and commemorating our local heritage. Peter Cowden Clifton Springs

However, this is not what the council is doing – it is writing to residents telling them the storage of chemicals is now a foregone conclusion. How disappointing. Governance continues to serve business interests over those of the residents. I don’t know why we bother to vote - we don’t get representation. Australia is fast becoming a corporate paradise. It also seems at odds with Geelong’s promotion of itself as the green city of the future. It seems future-proofing is only for some. Summer Dew North Geelong

Theory debate ridiculous I ASK Pastor Frank Lowry (Letters, 4 October) why so much more proof is needed for the Theory of Evolution when a book that’s some 3000 years old states that men were suddenly created out of nothing and women from a single rib of that first man? Does he get that the theory is not an absolute rule in science but the most likely way things happened? A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world and based on knowledge repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation. Scientists create scientific theories from hypotheses corroborated through the scientific method then gather evidence to test their accuracy. As with all forms of scientific knowledge, scientific theories are inductive in nature and aim for predictive and explanatory force. It’s a ridiculous issue to write to the paper about when there is so much better to do in the world, like helping homeless people break their cycle of poverty, ensuring Aboriginal children are educated in the ways their ancestors’ everyday life or perhaps helping people heal the wounds of systemic church abuse of children through all denominations. I am a creationist - I believe humans created gods. Jon ’Moo’ Kau Ocean Grove

Working class mayor AS WE’RE about to have a mayoral election, I thought I’d put in my two bob’s worth about what Geelong needs. First, the city centre needs fixing up. It’s nothing short of a sad, depressing unplanned mess. Instead of just kowtowing to the big end of town and massive shopping centre owners, we need to bring life back to Geelong’s old buildings and the city’s history. To do this we don’t need well-funded overseas trips - all our city leaders have to do is visit regional cities like Ballarat and Bendigo to see how to refresh and reuse historical buildings. Both cities’ centres leave Geelong’s for dead. Secondly, we need to recognise that Geelong is still predominantly a working-class city fast losing its heavy industry and decently paid jobs. We now have many thousands of long-term unemployed, many of whom lucky enough to be working are on low wages. As a retired worker who saw many more good times than bad, I feel for today’s workers. Saying there will be plenty of jobs in IT, hospitality et cetera does not replace the decent jobs and sense of personal worth we used to have. Most workers are happy to work manually and do not want to be desk jockeys or would-be-if-theycould-bes. They just want a decent life. Bob Mancor North Geelong

Gambling a curse for jobless IN REGARD to Michael J Gamble’s letter headlined ‘Jobless out of the races’ in last week’s Independent, after meeting him in person and reading many of his letters over the years I find it hard to believe he proposed opening a door for even one latent gambler to lay a hard-saved family dollar in the blind hope of a higher dividend. Perhaps the opportunity to gamble is something many of us experienced when limited horizons helped maintain family or personal harmony and well-being. Mr Gamble’s reference to “coming of age” made me recall young people doing so via families who gave them love plus a good education through the tougher periods of life. Mr Gamble might recall our initial conversation about how I, too, had worked among people whose lost finances led to other outcomes, as just one phase in their lives. Ben Wright Grovedale

By MICHELLE HERBISON SINGER Rhonda Burchmore responded in valiant style to an online impersonator with a “wicked tongue” posing under her name. The Aussie diva simply embraced the situation when she discovered Melbourne comedian Thomas Jaspers posing as her on Twitter, writing “really crass, just out there” comments. “Everyone was texting me – Anthony Callea and Tim Campbell – saying, ‘Oh my god is that you? He’s crazy.’ It was just outrageous,” Burchmore recalled with a laugh. After contacting Jaspers urging a name change, who promptly changed his Twitter name to Rhonda Butchmore, Burchmore appeared in a comedic Youtube skit alongside Jaspers, both dressed in blue sequins and heels. “I said to him, ‘I thought if I can’t beat you I’ll join you’. Sometimes that could backfire but I thought he’s pretty harmless. “And I actually follow him (on Twitter). Fortunately I’ve got more followers than he has.” Burchmore spoke to the Independent amid a hefty touring schedule in the lead-up to her Geelong Performing Arts Centre Musical Mornings concerts on 13 and 14 November. Her most recent album, Cry Me a River, a tribute to 1950s songstress Julie London, made number four on ABC’s jazz charts. Burchmore said she had just returned from Japan where they dubbed her “the eighth wonder of the world” due to her signature long legs. “It was quite a novelty. They just smile and laugh,” she said. “I couldn’t understand a word but they were really lovely people. It was really nice to have a lovely reaction there where no one knows me as such.” Burchmore said her Musical Mornings shows

would be “quite relaxed” but she promised to don a gorgeous dress for the occasion. “This will be intimate and very personal in terms of a far more candid presentation than big budget musicals,” she said. Pianist Ray Alldridge would accompany Burchmore on a range of songs, including “everything from musical theatre to contemporary to Gershwin to Cole Porter”, she teased. She would also reveal anecdotes from her career, right back to the days of Hey Hey it’s Saturday, and featuring names such as Mickey Rooney and Bill Clinton.

QUEENSCLIFF: The Living End.

Living for a gig at QMF By MICHELLE HERBISON RE-LEARNING all 90-odd songs seemed like a good idea at the time but The Living End’s ambitious plan last year proved a “real brain strain”. Drummer Andy Strachan was still recovering from last year’s The Retrospective Tour when he spoke to the Independent in the lead-up to the band’s gig at this month’s Queenscliff Music Festival. Over a series of seven-night residencies around the country, the group performed every track from each album since its 1998 beginnings - a particularly mean feat for Strachan who joined in time for album number three. “It was a fairly ballsy thing to do,” he said. “We’ve probably got 14 tracks on a record and we may play two or three regularly. “Singles stay in the live set for years but the album tracks … it was brutal,” Strachan laughed. The band has since returned from a European tour playing festivals and supporting German punk rock band Die Toten Hosen, which translates as ‘the dead pants’, to 50,000-strong crowds. Strachan described returning home to Barwon Heads after long stretches away on tour as “just like Christmas”.

0

“It’s such an amazing part of the world.” These days with all three members scattered around the globe – frontman Chris Cheney in Los Angeles and bassist Scott Owen in Byron Bay – touring times were sporadic but intense, Strachan explained. “We knuckle down and do a five week tour then go our separate ways. It’s kind of healthy.” Strachan said the band was yet to begin writing material for a new record but the creative juices could start flowing at any moment. “When we were recording (2008 album) White Noise we had a bit of a moment where Chris came out with this riff and it was like turning on the tap,” Strachan remembered. “It was one of those amazing moments you can’t predict, it just happened, and, bang – there’s the start of a record that did really well.” Strachan said he was looking forward to attending this year’s Queenscliff festival as a punter after the band’s headlining duties were complete. “I remember it being really good fun. A stack of people I know go religiously every year, so I’m excited to hang out with a bunch of mates.”

Joel’s art shore bet By MICHELLE HERBISON

SEA SURE: Joel Walter with his painting of Queenscliff Pier, above, and some of this other art, below.

inspiration for his work, with the artist often exploring the region with sketchbook and camera in hand. A theme running through most of Wolter’s works explored humans’ impact and presence in the environment, he said.

“It’s fairly understated in the work but in an undertone, there’s concern there. Just how dramatically the coast is changing – it seems a lot more busy and developed.” Wolter said Geelong skylines and nautical marine structures including Queenscliff

Pier played a part in some of his landscapes, while objects such as little shells featured in the still-lifes. Wolter completed most of his work after hours and at weekends, juggling his personal passions with a job teaching VCE art most of the week. His Stories from the Shore, part of a Geelong regional artists program, is open at the gallery until 1 December. Wolter will give a free artist’s floor talk about his artistic practice and some of his works at 3pm on 17 November.

LOCAL artist Joel Wolter is enjoying his down-time after a year of hard work preparing 26 artworks for a Geelong Gallery exhibition. Wolter told the Independent he had continued with his beloved print-making while also diversifying into oil painting for Stories from the Shore. “I’ve exhibited and been more successful with the printmaking side of things but over the last few years I’ve started to develop the painting side of my work,” he said. “I see it as a challenge and evolution in my practice.” The immediacy of painting struck Wolter as a comfortable change from the laborious processes involved with etching and printing. “I end up with a result at the end of my brush right in front of my face,” he said. Wolter’s Stories from the Shore features 18 oil paintings and eight prints from etchings 14 still-lifes and 12 landscapes. “Most works depict the water and have coastal themes to them and all the little still life paintings have got ties to the ocean,” he said. “With my home being Geelong and the Surf Coast, a lot of the still-life works are things I’ve collected just walking along the beach and taken back to the studio.” Both intention and serendipity played parts in Wolter’s

Geelong store manager Adam Warburton says customers, from mums and dads to builders and developers, take advantage of The Bathroom Shop’s high quality without a huge price tag. “People like to recreate resortstyle bathrooms, so free-standing baths are increasingly popular. It helps to make a retreat out of the bathroom,” Adam says. “The bathroom is becoming more a place to relax and unwind instead of just to brush your teeth.”

Palm Lake Resort has numerous facilities for the good life.

Living’s easy at Palm Lake AFFORDABILITY and value are the main reasons residents give for buying into Palm Lake Resort, Truganina. Palm Lake is designed for mature-age living where lifestyle is important, along with security and affordable energy-efficient homes. Site fees are one of the lowest in the area, giving residents heaps more to save, especially when most activities are free and the extent of the facilities are unrepeated in the area. Pharmacy services and hours expand

Dental’s a real laugh

CUSTOMERS are enjoying exciting times at Newcomb Central Pharmacy. With new opening hours from 8am to 9pm seven days a week from Monday, customers will have the convenience of being able to visit before work or the school drop-off and shift workers will be able to stock up after-hours. The pharmacy’s high level of service will remain whether customers visit 8am Monday or 8.45pm Sunday - staff will always be on hand to help with any requirements. Newcomb Central Pharmacy also has introduced two new health services. The first is free hearing

NITROUS oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help patients relax during medical procedures. Commonly known as ‘laughing gas’, nitrous oxide is one option a dentist might offer to help make patients more comfortable during certain procedures. Norlane Dental Surgery’s Dr Rashi Gupta says nitrous oxide is not intended to put patients to sleep. “They’re still able to hear and respond to any requests or directions from the dentist. The dentist will ask the patient to breathe normally through the nose and within

testing twice a month by Australian Hearing. Customers can phone the store for testing dates and to make bookings. The second is the pharmacy’s new “mini health check” with registered nurse Penny. The check takes 15 to 30 minutes and costs only $15. Penny checks blood pressure and blood glucose and cholesterol levels and much more before providing great information to take home. Mini health check bookings are available in-store or by phoning 5248 2398. Newcomb Central Pharmacy is at shop 5A, Newcomb Central, 71 Bellarine Hwy, Newcomb.

Nitrous dioxide can help dental patients through procedures. a few short minutes they should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide,” Dr Gupta says. “The sensations can include light-headedness, tingling arms

and legs, warmth or like the patients is floating. “Ultimately, the patients should feel calm and comfortable.” The effects of nitrous oxide

wear off soon after the mask is removed, Dr Gupta says. Nitrous oxide works quickly, can be used for any appointment length, its sedation level is easy to control, the patient recovers quickly and it is very safe. It can be used in medically compromised patients diabetics/ hypertensive patients with a strong gagging reflex, patients with dental phobia, patients allergic to other sedatives and is very effective for uncomfortable procedures like scaling, Norlane Dental Surgery patients are welcome to discuss with their dentist whether nitrous oxide is a good option for their treatment.

Holistic help for foot, leg pain FOOT and leg pain is likely to reoccur and progressively worsen without the right treatment. The good news is that one of Australia’s largest and most successful podiatry practices dedicated to assisting foot and leg pain and injuries is now just around the corner. Renowned for successful patient outcomes, Foot & Leg Pain Clinics has opened a new centre at 92 Roslyn Rd, Belmont. With a reputation for results, Foot & Leg Pain Clinics treat some of the world’s best athletes and tens of thousands of everyday patients. Experienced sports podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, who heads the new clinic says, correct diagnosis is essential. “You must look past the surface symptoms to find the cause of issues,” Dr Kavanagh says. “It’s our priority to stay upto-date with the latest medical research and treatments and to take a holistic approach. “It’s also very important to address each patient’s concerns based on their individual lifestyle and requirements, nutritional status and overall health and injury concerns.

Foot & Leg Pain Clinics can help patients overcome chronic and recurrent issues. “We see so many patients with persisting issues because they’ve been misdiagnosed, the causes are not addressed specifically and/or inappropriate treatments have been utilised. It’s unnecessary because most pain and injuries can be addressed quickly and easily.” Foot & Leg Pain Clinics’ helpful advice on pain and injuries includes: avoiding medications with negative side effects in favour of effective natural alterna-

tives; surgery should always be a last resort in many cases due to new natural injection therapies for soft tissue regeneration; treatments are available for patients with apparently incurable problems; and an experienced sports podiatrist is the best professional to assist with foot and leg pain, injury and degenerative issues. More information and appointments are available by phoning Foot & Leg Pain Clinics on 1300 328 300.

THE BELLARINE Peninsula’s latest aged care residence is preparing for an open day on 9 November. Arcare Bellarine, at Point Lonsdale, will be open for admissions on Monday, 11 November, but interested locals and their families can get a sneak peak into the five-star aged care residence at the open day the previous Saturday. Geelong radio station Bay FM will attend to run barbecues and live crosses, while Arcare will

also conduct guided tours of the new facility for anyone wanting a closer look. Arcare Bellarine is Arcare’s 20th aged care residence but it’s the first for the facility’s Geelong-based project manager, Sam O’Sullivan. “This build has definitely opened my eyes, Mr O’Sullivan says. “I would never have imagined an aged care residence with a cafe, gift-shop, hair

salon and theatre, he said. “It really was a surprise. I reckon I’ll put mum in here in a few years. Located on Shell Road in The Point estate, Arcare’s newest fivestar aged care residence will give residents the best in supported elder care. Anyone wanting to nurse a Melbourne Cup hangover or celebrate their winnings can drop into the open day to experience the best in aged care.

Helping with funeral plans PLANNING for a funeral is now an important step in retirement planning. More Australians are increasingly making their own funeral plans but, as consumers, many lack and adequate understanding of the funeral products they are buying, according to an Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) research report. The ASIC report, released last year, showed that most Australians settle with the first product they find in an effort to avoid becoming a burden on others. The finding indicates consumers are less likely to pick the best product for their circumstances or take value for money and longterm costs into account. Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service can help clients find the right information. Tuckers’ Alyson Burchell and Michele Van Liessum are educating the Geelong community by showing all the funeral planning options currently available in Australia. “When planning ahead it’s important to find the best option suited to your needs,” Ms Burchell says. “There are many options and gaining the right information can

save money or prevent an expensive mistake. We provide a range of different funeral plan options, including the facility to pre-plan without a financial commitment. “Planning ahead can help to ease the emotional and financial burdens otherwise left to family.”

More information on the community talks throughout the Geelong region in November is available by phoning Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service on 5221 4788. Obligation free appointments are also available.

Many benefits of tinting with the specialists at Tintmaster WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car.

IndySport Cats’ two-day challenge begins LAST weekend’s inclement weather cost Geelong Cricket Club the opportunity to come out on the positive side of the ledger from the five one-dayers that were scheduled to start the premier season. With Ringwood struggling in second last place, the Cats would have fancied their chances to claim a third win for the season. However, it was not to be and the side must now re-focus for two-day mode when it travels to Fitzroy Doncaster over the next two Saturdays. This will be a critical challenge for the club, particularly the younger members of the squad who will need to ensure they are switched on for the entire game because a bad half-hour of cricket at this level can cost a game. Geelong Cricket Association also suffered from the weather last week, with all turf games throughout the divisions cancelled.

cricket Jim Timberlake

This round is also the beginning of two-day cricket at local level, which is always a test for the sides that lack depth because as the attrition rate starts to build, the goods teams begin to assert their dominance. In division one, the cream has already started to rise to the top. Richard Oliver heads the batting table, with 290 runs so far, the star Englishman notching up two centuries and a 50 already.

Fellow Englishman Matt Lineker and New Zealander Brad Patton are also in the top 10, showing that the league is well and truly capable of attracting top-notch talent despite the existing player points rules making this difficult. With the ball, Newtwon & Chilwell’s Justin Maher leads all comers with nine wickets at the miserly average of 15 runs. Clinton Peake has shown his worth in the bowling stakes as well, with the star all-rounder the only player in the league in the top 10 for both runs and wickets. In division two, reigning premier Newcomb & District was expected to struggle early, with the loss of last year’s captain Simon Anderson to Geelong and the late arrival of gun quick Richard Stanyon. However, Tim Thompson has stepped up bigtime, taking 10 wickets already to lead the table and

Anthony Quarrell sits second on the runs tally with 114. With Stanyon due any day, the Dino’s depth means they’re looking ominous. Chris McIlvenny is the standout all-rounder, with nine wickets and 90 runs so far. And in division three, it’s once again a player from the reigning premier that has got off to a flyer. Bell Park’s Jamie Spiller has picked up where he left off last season, scoring 208 runs at an average of 104 so far. Teesdale has also shown it’s no accident the side is in second place, with three players in the top six wicket takers. Sam Campbell has 10, while Alister Woods and Darren Laidlaw both have eight. With all three boasting an average under eight, the biggest competition could be in who takes the new ball this week.

Calm settles on hot fishing for snapper on baits and plastics in bays On the

bite Brian Long

CALMER conditions last weekend produced plenty of snapper at local cleaning tables. Troy Miller fished off Clifton Springs last Saturday night and all was quiet until dark when four rods folded almost simultaneously. Troy lost two but boated a pair of snapper over 5kg each before catching another soon after to complete his bag-limit catch. Neil Stevens found fish close to the channel near Alcoa. His three snapper weighed over 13kg combined and were all caught on salted bay pilchards. Garry Harris cast soft plastics along the outer edge of the Hermsley spoil grounds on Monday morning to catch eight snapper. Most were just under 40cm but one stand-out was 75cm, with all fish taken on Gulp turtleback worms in the Pumpkinseed colour. Daniel Spalding fished soft plastics close in off the quarries for a mixed bag. Pike dominated but he also boated flathead and snapper on turtleback worms. Most snapper reports were from the bend in the channel off Clifton Springs all the way to Alcoa, with fishing close to the channel’s edge seemingly best. However, not all the snapper captures were from the outer-harbour – Greg Pullen caught snapper better than 6kg fishing after dark from North Shore rocks with fresh salmon fillets. Gerry Shorten cast soft plastics along Geelong’s waterfront to find reasonable numbers of pike and flathead late in the evenings. Squid remained difficult to catch, although George Gallaher has been nabbing bag limits while fishing land-based at Hermsley. Yamashita size 2.5

SLIPPERY CUSTOMER: Mathew Maradam with a 480g eel he caught at the Ron Nelson Fishing Clinic in North Geelong. jigs have been working well after dark, with most of George’s squid around 900g. I fished Queenscliff’s cut with soft plastics last weekend. Plenty of Tommy rough and the odd trevally were available over the hours but a big flathead made the afternoon memorable.

Guy Welsh found flathead at the entrance to Swan Bay with the help of a little berley to bring the fish to the boat. By day’s end he had a dozen fish 800g to 1.8kg, all caught on blue bait suspended under a small float. The best surf reports were from Black Rock near

Breamlea, where snapper and whiting have been taken. Around two dozen boats plied Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree last Sunday. Most anglers in the boats were fly fishing and captures were only fair, although Stanley Forbes enjoyed plenty of action while fishing mudeye under a bubble float to catch trout reaching 1.5kg. I also saw many shore-based anglers but few were using mudeye, so most only had average captures. Stuart Petterson fished Moorabool Reservoir for the first time with modest expectations until his first cast of a Daiwa Double Clutch caught a 1.5kg lure a brown trout. He caught another two of a similar size over the next three hours. Lismore’s Lake Tooliorook remained one of the best local freshwater prospects, with trout over 2.5kg caught in the past fortnight. Mudeye baits and trolled Tassie Devils in any of the gold colours have worked. Harrison Green returned from two days at Lake Toolondo where mudeye fished close to the submerged trees produced nine fish averaging 1.5kg. Harrison saw another angler with a brown trout estimated at 2.5kg and also caught on mudeye. About 200 kids fished in the Ron Nelson Junior Fishing Clinic at North Geelong’s Seagull Lake last Sunday. Rainbow trout were liberated into the lake for the event but were elusive, with participants instead landing eels and carp in ideal conditions. Snapper will again be a priority this weekend, with soft plastics likely to be productive during the afternoon tides on the outer-harbour spoil grounds. Anglers should be prepared to spend time looking for surface action caused by the salmon, which can betray snapper feeding below. Freshwater anglers should try Lake Wendouree with mudeye baits.
