PARKWOOD Green Primary School students including Jacob, left, and Tanner, had fun splashing about last week - despite the chilly weather – as the school officially opened its new pool. Built in conjunction with Paul Sadler Swimland, the new facility is a huge hit with even the youngest budding swimming stars and is set to benefit the school, which has more than 1200 students, for years to come. Neighbouring schools are also set to gain from the public private partnership, with three schools already enrolled in a swimming program at the school. 109070 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI
‘No politics’ pledge MELTON City Council’s 94th mayor has vowed to keep party politics out of local government decisions. Cr Bob Turner was elected mayor for the next 12 months at a statutory meeting of the council last Tuesday evening with Cr Sophie Ramsey elected as deputy mayor. Cr Turner served as deputy mayor in 2012/13 after being first elected to the council in 2008. During his acceptance speech, Cr Turner thanked
residents for electing him to the council and his peers for giving him the opportunity to serve as mayor. He also thanked his wife, Val, and his family for their ongoing support. “I don’t see myself as a politician, but rather as a community member in a position to advocate for youth, the elderly and other who otherwise may not be heard,” Cr Turner said. “I’m honoured and humbled to represent our great city … and I don’t believe party politics should interfere with local government.
Melton City Council’s new mayor Bob Turner is looking forward to a productive 12 months ahead. 109241 Picture: SUPPLIED “There is no doubt in my mind that we live in the best city in Australia … and I want

to continue to make it a beautiful and progressive city to live in.” He also thanked out-going mayor Kathy Majdlik and said she had left “big shoes to fill for a small lady”. In her out-going speech Cr Majdlik expressed her “heartfelt appreciation” to the community and her fellow councillors and described her year as mayor as “fast-paced, highly rewarding and productive”. “It was an absolute honour and privilege and a time I will cherish forever.”
Cr Ramsey described the new mayor as “selfless and passionate” and said “his blood is community through and through”. Cr Ramsey said she looked forward to a fantastic 12 months ahead. Two motions which will see councillors receive an allowance totalling $29,326 and the mayor’s allowance reach $93,672 were both passed unanimously. Cr Lara Carli returned to the chambers after an extended leave of absence due to illness.

MELTON City Council has expressed its extreme disappointment at the recent announcement that local nursing home Reg Geary House, operating under the governance of Western Health, will be closed. Late last week, the council received notification from Western Health of its plans to close Reg Geary House, effective 30 June next year. In a statement released to the media, Western Health said the closure was a result of the very small size of the service – with only 30 beds and the fact it will soon be unable to meet the stringent accreditation standards of the Commonwealth. Melton mayor Bob Turner called on the State and Federal health ministers to take appropriate action to address the extreme shortage of nursing home beds within Melbourne’s West and in particular Melton.

Spoiled for choice By NATALIE GALLENTI MELTON shoppers can now enjoy the premium facilities at Woodgrove Shopping Centre after QIC unveiled the impressive $150 million expansion last week. The expansion area, which has been fully leased, has more than doubled the size of the centre and introduces additional major national retailers to the region together with a diverse mix of about 80 new specialty retailers. It also features a new 550-seat food court, as well as a fully integrated dining and entertainment precinct. Parking has also been increased to about 2400 spaces.
QIC Global Real Estate managing director Steven Leigh and State Planning Minister Matthew Guy officially opened the expanded centre last Friday. “QIC has achieved its vision to create a destination that maximises Woodgrove’s exceptional position as a vital part of the local region,” Mr Leigh said. He said the revamped centre will provide Melton residents with access to an array of fashion, food and leisure that will meet the needs of the strong growth in the region. “This expansion is the next logical step for the evolution of Woodgrove in response to the growth of this key region and

the centre’s thriving trade area,” Mr Leigh said. Mr Leigh said Woodgrove is a vital part of the community and the expansion has contributed positively to the local economy by generating employment opportunities, with an estimated 800 new part-time and full-time local retail jobs created. Woodgrove now boasts over 150 retailers including Big W, Kmart and Coles, JB Hi-Fi, Harris Scarfe and Aldi. The centre also offers a new dining and entertainment precinct complete with Readings Cinemas. A new Woolworths is also expected to open later this year, together with a small number of speciality retailers.

Triple trouble By NATALIE GALLENTI Primary TOOLERN Vale School was targeted by burglars for the third time in as many weeks last week. The attempted burglary took place between 5pm on Saturday 26 October and 1pm Monday 28 October. However, the thieves were unsuccessful in their latest attempt to heist computers as the school recently adopted measures to secure valuable items. On 23 October police executed a drug search warrant in Lachlan Rd, Melton South.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks said a quantity of cannabis was seized and a 37-year-old female was charged with possessing a drug of dependence and bailed to appear at court at a later date. Det Sen Sgt Jenks said during the same warrant a 41-yearold Bacchus Marsh man was charged with possessing a drug of dependence and a Melton man, 22, was arrested on warrants of apprehension and charged with being in possession of a prohibited weapon. Meanwhile, a 42-year-old
Melton man was viciously attacked on Friday 25 October while walking along Palmerston St on his way home from a local hotel. The victim was struck with a garden stake by an unknown male offender and received serious head and facial injuries which required hospital care. Det Sen Sgt Jenks said the man has since been discharged from hospital. Police from Melton CIU would like to speak with anyone who may have information in relation to this incident.

Gentle exercise By NATALIE GALLENTI MEMBERS of the Melton Bacchus Marsh Diabetes Support Group are getting set to don their walking shoes and raise awareness of diabetes within the community as part of World Diabetes Day on 14 November. By participating in the Global Diabetes Walk, support groups across Victoria will provide their members with an opportunity to get together and enjoy some gentle exercise and spread the word on diabetes,
a disease that affects 235,000 people in Victoria with another 450 new cases developing every week. Convenor of the Melton Bacchus Marsh Diabetes Support Group Jeann Clarke said walking was easy and good for people’s health. “The Global Diabetes Walk gives our support group the chance to come together and be active. Walking together also gives our group the opportunity to raise awareness of World Dia-

betes Day and our profile in the community,” Jeann said. She said the support group was a great way for people with diabetes to meet each other and learn from different experiences. “People who attend support groups find the group aspect important as it helps them to be more positive in managing their diabetes.” The group will meet at 11am on Thursday 14 November at the Melton City Council car park to begin their walk.

Moving? Bring your child with you CHILDREN sometimes have to move school, either by choice or because of family circumstances. Although this experience can be challenging, parents can help make it easier for their child. Nearly a third of school children move at least once in a three-year period, according to Australian research. Children move schools for many reasons, most often with their families. Your family might be moving for
a ‘sea change’, or to follow a parent’s new or seasonal employment. They may be part of a culture or business that needs to be mobile, or part of a community where they need to travel for family reasons or cultural events and ceremonies. Alternatively the family may be part of the armed forces. There are some ways to prepare a child for the move and enable them to handle the change more easily.
Involve the child as much as possible in the process of moving and choosing schools. This will help your child see the exciting and positive aspects of the move. They will be a lot happier if they know their needs are important. If possible, discuss the move with the child well in advance. Ask the child to write a list of things they would like to have in their new school and in the new home or neighbourhood, what they would like in their new school and
what they might be worried about. Make a list of the schools in the new area and show it to the child. If the child is old enough, talk about the options. Research schools in the area you’re moving to and talk to the principal and teacher of the school your child is leaving. Request or take a collection of the child’s work to bring to the new school. Ask about strategies the new school
has for helping new children adjust to the school - a buddy system, for example. If the child has special needs, talk to the new school about its facilities. If moving interstate, the child’s abilities and eligibility for assistance might need to be re-assessed. Talk to new neighbours. Perhaps the child can meet some classmates for a playdate before the first day at school. For more tips and information visit www.education.vic.gov.au.

Grow rich and tasty treats they tasted better and were available for eating all year round. What we call a globe artichoke is actually an unopened bud of a thistle family member and, if left to mature, the bud will expand into a rich, purple, thistle-like flowerhead. The leaves and stems are a delightful silvery grey. The plants can reach up to more than a metre tall and, because of their striking good looks, are often grown as ornamentals.
Globe artichokes can be started from suckers taken from established plants or by growing them from seed. Artichoke Green Globe is found in Yates seed packet range and spring is the ideal time to sow the seeds. Start by preparing the garden bed with some organic compost and some Dynamic Lifter pellets. If soil is acidic, it can be helpful to mix in a small amount of Yates Garden
Lime before planting. Like many silver-leafed plants, artichokes do best in areas with low humidity and cool summers. Good drainage is essential. Watering at the base, especially early in the day so the leaves have time to dry before nightfall, will help keep the plants disease free. Artichokes grow slowly and usually take more than a year to get to
cropping stage. As they grow, thin out the shoots to leave only the three or four strongest. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up with a myriad of weak, small heads. Pick the buds while they are firm but well before they open. Trim and cook by boiling or steaming for 45 to 60 minutes. Pull individual leaflets off and dip into melted butter or sauce - yum.

GLOBE artichokes have a long and fascinating history. They’re believed to be native to the Mediterranean region but initially gained a poor culinary reputation because the ancient Romans used to roast the edible buds on open fires. This charred the outside of the globe and did little to enhance its flavour. Eventually the Romans worked out that artichokes could be preserved in honey and vinegar, which meant

Mix it with the best By ADEM SARICAOGLU IMPROVED depth will be the key to Melton Centrals’ push for a return to finals football in 2014. The Blues finished seventh in the Riddell District Football League and were only denied a finals berth by percentage. As it turns out, Melton Centrals found itself right in the middle of football’s no man’s land in 2013 good against the battlers, but not so consistent against the contenders. Coach Brian Wheelahan admits 2013 was a bit of a letdown after his side showed plenty of promise the previous year. “In 2012 we had a taste of finals and the place was up and about and buzzing, so (2013) was a little bit disappointing,” Wheelahan said. “There were three or four games that sort of bit us on the backside games where we were either up or where we should’ve won, and upon reflection that was probably the difference. “But we’re really buoyant about next year.” Centrals has already welcomed Anthony Rhodes, who will coach the club’s first under-18s team in 11 years, while Wheelahan himself
is expecting to inject some added experience while retaining most of his playing list from 2013. Specifically, while nothing has yet been confirmed, Wheelahan hopes to add seven new recruits to his playing stocks in a bid to increase the Blues’ finals credentials for next year. “We fell down in a couple of areas all over the ground, to be honest, so we’d like to think the blokes we hopefully will recruit will add a new dimension in those areas,” Wheelahan said. “Whether it be stopping an opposition key forward or a bit of extra run in the midfield - we know we lack pace and we got found out on the bigger grounds, so hopefully we can inject a couple of players across the wing or half forward. “I guess the big emphasis will be on the weight of numbers.” Wheelahan said the coming pre-season, due to begin later this month, would be a long, hard summer for his troops, as a significant improvement in fitness levels will be the other key factor in the Blues’ 2014 finals hopes. “We had some fantastic halves of footy and even three quarters of footy, and a couple of times we were three or four goals up and got over-
MELTON suffered its first loss of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season against Oakleigh on Saturday. Playing in their first one-day game of the summer, the Lions couldn’t chase down their target of an even 200 runs at Oakleigh’s Warrawee Park Oval. The host won the toss and posted 9/199 in its 45-over dig, with Samuel Jones (72) and Brent Warren (53) leading the way and combining for an 86-run partnership. The Lions’ bowling attack was well led by James Wheelahan, who picked up very tidy figures of 4/17 from his eight overs, while Brad Jones and Nathan Allen each claimed two wickets of their own. However, Melton’s batsmen couldn’t match the exploits of the bowlers, battling for decent runs through the top order. Captain-coach Nathan Geisler was the top scorer with 37 but with none of his team-mates posting anything above 20, the Lions could only get to 142 before losing their final wicket in the 39th over.
ROCKBANK duo Frank and Michael Azzopardi were successful with four-year-old Riverboat King/Sister Courage mare Sabiha Courage in the Farmhand Pace for C0 class over 2080 metres at Cranbourne on Tuesday last week. Beaten for speed from the pole, Sabiha Courage settled three back along the markers, with Rorybeebellows leading from gate four. Making full use of the sprint lane, Sabiha Courage at her 42nd race appearance, finished full of running to blouse a death-seating Rock Albert - which led on turning by 4.3 metres in a rate of 2-01.8 - with Cooked Books running on late from well back to finish third. Adam Fenton was one of Melton Centrals’ stand-out performers in 2013, kicking 60 goals for the year. 97096 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT run, so it will be a pretty intense preseason based on fitness,” Wheelahan said. “That’s basically where we’re looking at - the fitness, stoppages and making sure we’re coming out and playing the duration of games.
“It was really disappointing,” Melton allrounder Jeremy Liddy told Star. “We felt we bowled and fielded well, and 199 was probably a pass for that ground - but Oakleigh totally outplayed us, so it was disappointing.” Melton, usually a powerhouse in the VSDCA, has had an indifferent start to its 2013/14 campaign, but Liddy believes an improved showing from the top order in coming weeks will help get the Lions back on track. “We’ve certainly got the team to compete against all the top sides, but I think we’re just not starting off on the right foot,” Liddy said. “I think it’s just down to individuals preparing correctly and turning up on the day and wanting to get the job done. “Our top five batsmen need to score the bulk of the runs, so those guys need to step up in the future. “The bowlers are bowling well and the fielding hasn’t been great but it’s improving, so I think it just comes down to the batsmen as individuals needing to step up.”

“We know and have shown that a half of our best is good enough to mix it with anyone. “It’s just maintaining that consistency for four quarters and if we can do that, then I’m sure we’ll win more games than we lose.”
ROCKBANK trainer Joe Vassallo’s most consistent four-year-old Village Jasper/Stunning Impact gelding Stunning Jasper chalked up his second victory in 17 outings, by taking the Rehfisch and Co Vicbred Trotters Mobile for T0 class over 1710 metres at Bray Raceway Ballarat on Wednesday. Driven once again by Brian Gath, Stunning Jasper led throughout from gate three in defeating Miss Cosmos, which trailed by 2.5 metres, with Ballan Road (one/one) running his usual honest race for third. The mile rate 2-03.6. MELTON’S Alison Chisholm was in the winners stall at Ballarat when four-year-old Grinfromeartoear/Shes A Christian gelding Suspicious Behavia landed the Campanas Stockade Cellars Pace for C3 and C4 class over 1710 metres. Driven by Alison, Suspicious Behavia from gate two led all of the way to account for Secretary Of State, which trailed, and NimbleJack (one/two) in a slick 1-57.8.
Melton captain-coach Nathan Geisler top-scored with 37 runs on Saturday. 107216 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI Liddy went on to admit his side may just be feeling the effects of not having its star batsman, Mick Allen (who is nursing a broken leg from the RDFL grand final), available at the top of the order. “We’re losing wickets in clumps, so I think it’s about building partnerships,” he said. “We know (Allen) probably won’t be there for the rest of the season so we can’t dwell on it. “We’ve just got to start looking to the future and guys need to start making runs.”

TOUGH ex-Tasmanian five-year-old Hugo Play showed his true staying prowess by taking out the $15,000 Tabcorp Park Melton Pace Final for M0 and M1 class over 2240 metres on Friday for horses that qualified in the heats held a week earlier. Now in the care of Lance Justice in close proximity of the track, Hugo Play, a gelded son of Je Mint and Toy Story, was allowed to find his feet three wide after starting outside the front row, with stablemate Alchemy beginning at 100 miles an hour from the extreme draw to park outside the favourite Sals Mo, which led from gate three. Once balanced, Hugo Play moved forward to join Sals Mo and once there, Lance made it quite clear that the pacemaker was not going to get it easy. Taking a narrow lead on the final bend, Hugo Play was very strong at the finish, defeating Alchemy, which was given every chance on his back due to the “drive of the night” by Rod Petroff. Pole marker Mister Orion finished third after trailing the leader and using the sprint lane, while Sals Mo battled on to finish fourth. In quarters of 30.1, 29.3, 28.3 and 28.6, Hugo Play returned a mile rate of 1-56.5 for the journey. The margins a neck by 1.6 metres. MEETINGS for the week: Wednesday - Bendigo, Thursday - Yarra Valley, Friday - Ballarat, Saturday - Melton, Sunday - St Arnaud (Cup), Monday - Cobram, Tuesday - Terang. HORSES to follow: Bettor Move, Rock Albert, Guggenheim, Hargrave, Slancio, La Machane, Illawong Kath, Cold Sister.

Roadstar Isuzu takes MU-X to the max THE Isuzu D-Max ute will soon have a closely-aligned SUV sibling. The Japanese truck brand, which also imports utes to Australia through a separate distributor, is set to unveil a seven-seat SUV variant currently referred to in-house as the MU-X. The MU-X has already received Australian design approval. Documents indicate the new vehicle will be offered in 2WD and 4WD guises. Reports suggest that SUV is due to be unveiled in Thailand this month, with an Australian release slated for December. Isuzu has offered a sevenseat SUV in Thailand since 2004, called the MU-7, but it has never been sold in Australia. It’s believed the MU-X will sport a front end resembling the new D-Max ute design, which launched in Australia last June. The Isuzu will join a growing crop of rugged SUVs based on dual-cab utes, including the Holden Colorado, Nissan Pathfinder and Mitsubishi Challenger. Ford Australia is also work-
ing on an SUV variant based on the locally-engineered Ranger ute, called the Everest. The Australian-spec DMax is currently powered by a 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine producing 130kW and 380Nm. However, a European version is also available with a 2.5-litre turbo diesel variant which meets strict Euro 5 diesel emission standards that will apply to all Australian vehicles from 2016. The Isuzu brand has played its hand in the Australian SUV market previously as the donor designer of the Holden Jackaroo and Frontera vehicles. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Kia, Isuzu Ute at 22 Morris Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, or call 9974 3799 for more information. Alternatively, visit Western Kia, Isuzu Ute at 51-53 Westwood Drive, Ravenhall, open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm, or call 8390 5165 to learn more. Isuzu Mu-X is set to hit Australian shores in December.
