Festival bonanza

A NEW-LOOK Yarraville Festival has been unveiled. The festival will go from being a one-day festival to a week-long calendar of events, including an outdoor movie night, a comedy night, fashion parade, teddy bear’s picnic, street art works and meet the author dinner. Councillor Martin Zakharov said the Yarraville Festival Committee was also looking into the new craze of Lego bombing, where holes in walls are filled in with Lego. “We want it to be a whole week of Yarraville, rather than just one day,” he said. A TRANSPORT advocacy group believes an upgraded, integrated public transport system will solve the West’s transport woes. The Transport for Melbourne group also considers the East West Link to be an expensive money pit that will not alleviate traffic congestion. The group will host a public forum at the Maribyrnong City Council town hall this Thursday to discuss Melbourne’s transport crisis, and how it is affecting the West. Forum convenor Roger Taylor, who has spent more than 20 years in the transport industry - including jobs at Victorian Railways, V/Line and the Public Transport Corporation - said the West was deprived of good public transport options. “We need to redesign the bus network, which is absolutely hopeless,” he said. “We need to get our buses, our trams and our trains all running reliably and on time, and once we’ve done that we need to hook them all up, so that they work as an integrated network. “It needs to run like a Swiss watch, like in Zurich, so that people can make connections between a train, tram or bus to get around Melbourne.

“There’s no excuse for trains not to run on time. “Once you do that, everything changes. You need to change their timetables, and it will be a transforming thing. “Even in cases where you’d like to walk or cycle, because there’s so much traffic around it’s not much fun riding either.” Mr Taylor said the West was also “getting belted” with freight issues, and believes a freight plan is urgently needed. He believes the changes can be made within two years and at only a fraction of the cost of the East West Link. “All the infrastructure that we need in Melbourne to make that happen already exists, and it exists on the roads - that’s where your buses and trams work, but they’re absolutely fouled up by traffic congestion, and ... you need priority lanes for buses and trams. “The problem that we have is that it’s a difficult policy to sell because it’s not monumental. One big project doesn’t solve all your problems, but people seem to think it does.” The Transport for Melbourne public forum will be held this Thursday at the Maribyrnong City Council town hall from 6pm. IT IS hard to walk through the Werribee Racing Club’s quarantine centre and not get star struck. For the past few months, racing royalty has called Werribee home as some of the sport’s most high profile trainers, owners and jockeys launch their assaults on the Spring Carnival. Melbourne and Caulfield Cup winner Dunaden is just one of the big names back at Werribee in 2013 and has been joined by other stars of the track including Red Cadeaux, Dandino and Mount Athos. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said it was an exciting time of year. “This facility has only been operating for three years. “Over those three years we have had two Melbourne Cup winners and a Caulfield Cup winner,” he said. “All the connections, they all stay locally which is fantastic for the local community. “They are here every day and they are investing and spending in the local community. “From our point of view that is great to see. “The other thing about having these horses here is the people who are out here every day. “The likes of Gai Waterhouse and Luca Cumani are on the grounds just walking around.” Depending on the result of this year’s Melbourne Cup, Kendell is hoping racegoers attending the TAB Werribee Cup will be in for a special treat. With half of this year’s Melbourne

Cup field based at Werribee, a winner in the race that stops the nation could see a special guest on the day. “At some point in the future, statistics will tell you we are probably going to get another winner of the Melbourne Cup that is based here,” Kendell said. “What we will be doing is, the sec-

ond that horse goes over the line at Flemington, I’ll be going to the owner and saying, now you are coming down the straight on TAB Werribee Cup Day. “We have such a good relationship with all these guys... they would be more than happy to do it.”

MEET your new mayor. Footscray trader and independent councillor Grant Miles was elected unopposed last week in a special council meeting after being nominated for the top job by fellow councillor Nam Quach. Cr Quach was appointed Deputy Mayor. Cr Miles was voted in at last year’s Maribyrnong City Council elections after running a big campaign to rid the council of its Labor stronghold. He runs Cheaper Buy Miles in Footscray and is the former

with Hong Kong-style 30-storey towers all over Footscray.” Cr Miles takes over from fellow independent and Maribyrnong’s longest serving councillor, Catherine Cumming. He said Maribyrnong’s independent majority had breathed new life into the council. “I think we’re all working together very well, even the Labor councillors.” There’s more discussion around decision-making ... it’s very open and we’ve all got different viewpoints, but those viewpoints are not in any way politically aligned, they’re focused on the issues.”

president of the Footscray Traders Association. “I’m very honoured and humbled, and I’ll take the role very seriously,” he said. “The big issue for me is trucks, and trying to reduce the truck traffic on our suburban streets - so that will obviously be a very strong focus of mine. “There are other issues, like development in Footscray and containment on rampant development and making sure that what we end up with is the best outcome for the community. “I’m not saying a lot of development is bad ... but we need to make sure we don’t end up

ST John’s Catholic School has slammed Maribyrnong City Council’s handling of the hospital precinct car park furore. Vice principal Helen McColl, who attended a residents’ meeting with the council last Tuesday, said it was clear the council was not interested in the wants and needs of Eleanor St residents or the St John’s community. Residents and the school remain furious at the council’s plans to use a block of land at 41 Eleanor St as the car park’s access point. Eleanor St residents, together with staff from St John’s Primary School, have held multiple meetings with the council to request an alternative access point, concerned about the heightened traffic conditions and safety for school children - but Ms McColl said their efforts have proved fruitless. “It all just falls on deaf ears,” she said. “Because they’ve spent so much money putting in this road (access point), they’re never going to close it.”They will still use it, but if there’s other entrances and exits to that car park, there might be less traffic going down the street.”Or, just make this street and entrance or an exit - one or the other, but not both. That would make us a little happier. “Councils think they can just put things through and it’s all going to be fine, but in the end people’s lives are at risk. “It started off with absolutely no consultation, and it hasn’t improved from there. They don’t treat people and the issues people have with respect - they go ahead and go what they choose to anyway, no matter what the complaints are. “The process has not been a democratic process.” The council’s director of Infrastructure and Engineering Ian Butterworth said the council was looking at a range of safety measures, including speed and advisory signage, rumble strips, changes to parking spaces to improve lines of sight, and measures regarding drop off of children at the local school. Mr Butterworth confirmed that the council would keep the Eleanor St access point open even if another access point is agreed to. The car park is due to open on 9 December.

West’s bloody idiots By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM remains the dangerous driving capital of the West, with one in every 321 drivers caught drink driving over the last 18 months. New figures released by the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council as part of its Annual Report show that more hoons were also caught in Wyndham than in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melton, with a total of 159 being caught over the last year. Only Melton topped Wyndham

when it came to speeding drivers, with 272 drivers being nabbed this year. While Melton and Hobsons Bay both saw a decrease in the number of speeding drivers when compared to the year before, Wyndham and Maribyrnong saw marginal increases. A total of 95 speeding drivers were caught in Hobsons Bay while 83 and 159 were caught in Maribyrnong and Wyndham respectively. A total of 136 drivers were caught above the blood alcohol level in Wyndham, the equivalent of one

in every 351 drivers tested by police. Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong each had around one in 650 drivers nabbed while Melton had one in 523. The figures also pointed towards a worrying trend of drink driving based on gender. In most municipalities men were about twice as likely to be caught drink driving while in Wyndham they were almost three times as likely. In the annual report, chairman Jim Giddings said the community

needed to unite to help lower the amount of dangers on the roads. “The challenges of road safety issues are still there, but by bringing our local communities on board, we will continue to drive changes, including legislative changes, to meet the community’s expectations,” Mr Giddings said. “We still have a long way to go to reduce the over-representation of young drivers involved in road crashes however success has been achieved with the limited resources at our disposal.”

Star report reaps results By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE Regional Rail Link team has moved a Footscray bus stop that blocks the driveway to three private trader car parks. An exclusive Star report last month revealed that staff from Minuteman Press and Masbuild were furious over a new bus stop in front of their dispatch and parking access point along Albert St. The bus stop was relocated from Nicholson St, where bus stops have been closed due to Regional Rail Link works. A third premises that uses the car park is currently vacant. A spokesperson for the Regional Rail Link Authority said the Regional Rail Link Footscray Deer Park project team liaised with Public Transport Victoria when relocating the bus stop, who “considered a number of factors in determining the location of temporary bus stops”. But Fiona McDonnell from Minuteman Press said the bus stop, which served six routes and was also used as a driver changeover point, made it “near impossible” for staff, customers and couriers to access their car park. After negotiations with traders and Public Transport Victoria, the RRL Footscray to Deer Park team will move the bus stop further north along Albert St between the hours of 7am and 6pm. This new bus stop will take over two on-street car parking bays during the day. At night, the bus stop will operate from its current location. The temporary bus stops will remain on Albert St while Nicholson St is closed for RRL works, and will run until mid-2014. Ms McDonnell said she was glad traders could get a compromise on the issue.

Elite among fitness trainer’s clients By CHARLENE MACAULAY HE WAS the personal trainer to the late Princess Diana and has helped four Brownlow medallists reach peak fitness - now Cameron Falloon wants to whip you into shape. Mr Falloon has returned to his roots and opened The Exercise Room 24:7 along Buckley St, Footscray, just over a month ago to prove that anyone can achieve their fitness goals. The gym, which already has more than 600 members, is equipped with the latest technology and equipment, including large tablet-like screens on all cardio machines so that gym goers can watch their favourite TV

show, surf the web, download music or walk along a virtual Grand Canyon while doing their workout. Mr Falloon said one group of women watched The Bachelor every week while training. The gym also aims to offer a lot of free community programs. There is already a free running group two mornings a week for members and non-members and a road riding group is about to start, where riders can exercise in a safe and fun environment and then grab a coffee and socialise after. Mr Falloon got into the fitness industry after being derailed by a serious back injury and was told he

would never play sport or be active again. “I refused to accept that, so I went down as many avenues as I could to find a solution.” He studied anatomy and physiology at Monash University and did a fitness instructors course before doing personal training in London. It was here he found himself, aged 22, as a personal trainer at Princess Diana’s gym. About 10 months in, he was offered the chance to train Princess Diana herself. “She was great. She had a great sense of humour and it was good to know she was able to speak comfortably with me.

“It was a little bit surreal and not something I talk about a lot, because I know how private she wanted her life to be and part of the reason I could train with her was because they knew I wouldn’t talk or sell my story. “I think it’s important to respect that, whether it’s a princess or one of the members of our gym.” Mr Falloon has also worked with the English Premier League youth squad, the Geelong, Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs, and trained Brownlow medallists Jason Akermanis, Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel and Adam Cooney.

Unusual Suspect stormed home to claim the 2012 TAB Werribee Cup last December. 91764 Picture: MATHEW LYNN

Prime time for Cup By LIAM TWOMEY JUST eight days after the race that stops a nation, another champion of the track will be celebrated with the running of the 2013 TAB Werribee Cup. After being run in the lead up to Christmas last year, excitement levels are bursting at the seams with this month’s Cup taking place in the heart of the spring racing calendar. As well as following on from the Flemington Carnival, Werribee is also one of a host of weekday provincial cups including Kyneton, Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo making it a must stop destination for racegoers. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the spring timeslot was fantastic for the club. “It is amazing,” Kendell said.

Tuesday, 5 November, 2013 Page 3W

“To be back in the prime time of the spring racing carnival is great for everyone. “It also fits with other spring provincial race cups with clubs of a similar stature. “That gives us a real opportunity to grow and get back to where the Werribee Cup was.” As well as the running of the prestigious TAB Werribee Cup, there will also be seven other races on the day. The first race is scheduled for around noon. “The people around Werribee have told us how excited they are to be based in the spring,” Kendell said. “We have tried to pick up elements of what people have told us for our planning as well. “They loved the spring date and they loved the car parks so we have re-introduced car parks down the main straight.

“As well as that we will have the mixture of the corporate marquees, the mini marquees, the car sites and trackside enclosures so people will have a lot of options which is what we want to provide.” Anyone wishing to book a corporate marquee, mini marquee or buy tickets for the TAB Werribee Cup is encouraged to contact the club via its website, www.werribeeracingclub.com. au or call 1300 139 402. “We have just launched a brand new website,” Kendell said. “Previously we had one for the Werribee Function Centre and one for the Werribee Racing Club. “Now we have integrated them together so we have the one site. “They can do their complete online booking or they can use the information and call through to us.”

Cutting edge cancer technology By CHARLENE MACAULAY AN INNOVATIVE new cancer treatment has come to the West. Footscray’s Western Radiation Oncology Centre started using Volume Metric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) last week, a state-of-the-art technique that delivers more accurate treatment and cuts down treatment time. The treatment is most effective on prostate cancer and some head and neck cancers and is delivered via a linear accelerator, which is used in radiotherapy treatment. The service is available to both public and private patients. Dr Mario Guerrieri said

VMAT had slashed treatment time from 15 minutes to three to four minutes and can reduce side-effects associated with radiotherapy treatment. “When you target them accurately, it kills the cancer slowly on a day-by-day treatment,” Dr Guerrieri said. “Linear accelerators have been around for a long time. “They evolve a bit like a car - it’s evolves over time and a lot of the advances are driven by the software. “The new technique that we have here is using our existing technology and delivering treatment in a more precise, accurate way, so that we are able to deliver higher doses to the

tumour and lower doses to the surrounding normal tissues. “Even though it’s a little hospital, we’ve got all the stateof-the-art equipment for radiotherapy.” Hoppers Crossing resident John Ware was two days into 38 days of radiation therapy when he spoke to Star last week, and said the VMAT treatment was quick and pain-free. The 69-year-old was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June. “There’s nothing to it,” he said. “You just lie down and it (the machine) circles around you there’s no pain or anything.”

Kenny Weir and Lauren Wambach are joining forces to pick out the best dishes in the Picture: CONTRIBUTED West. 109126

In search of the best from the West By CHARLENE MACAULAY THESE bloggers know their food - and they’re keen to celebrate the best of the West. Food bloggers Lauren Wambach from the Footscray Food Blog and Kenny Weir from Consider the Sauce have joined forces to launch The Westies Dishes of Distinction. The awards will celebrate three dishes a year that they believe exemplifies good Western Suburbs grub. The selection process will take into account taste, consistency, pricing, and a sense of uniqueness or tradition. Ms Wambach and Mr Weir said the awardas were about

celebrating the big food culture across the West and the people who create it. In addition to her blog, Ms Wambach has contributed to food sections in The Age, Broadsheet and Time Out and campaigns such as the Footscray Food Map. She also runs regular food tours in Footscray. Mr Weir, who became a resident of the West more than a decade ago, has used his love of the culinary arts to expand son Benny’s palate. “It’s been a thrill and a privilege running one of only two Melbourne food blogs dedicated to the Western Suburbs,” Ms Wambach said.

“We see The Westies - Dishes of Distinction as a really exciting and enjoyable way of broadening appreciation of the food culture of the western suburbs”. Mr Weir added: “It’s going to be a tough choice, but who better than Lauren and I to make it?” The 2013 winners will be announced at the combined Footscray Food Blog/Consider the Sauce Spring Picnic at Yarraville Gardens on Saturday 30 November. The picnic starts 11am, and The Westies will announced at noon.

TAB WERRIBEE

CUP

Savvy styles are set for Spring THE 2013 TAB Werribee Cup is about more than just racing. In fact, the spring timeslot is the perfect occasion for racegoers to enjoy the fun, food and fashion available on course. For the style savvy, the Fashions on the Field event will again take centre stage in front of the grandstand with the competition expected to be just as hot off track as on. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the on course entertainment was a highlight of last year’s Cup. “We are doing Fashions on the Field and that went fantastically last year,” he said. “Historically it used to be out the back but again we are going out in front on the grand stand because people loved to be able to watch that in between the races last year. “If entrants want to go on the website they can download the registration form and then fill it in and send it back to us. “Otherwise they can register online.” As well as the fashion, there will be plenty of eating and entertainment options available at the course.

MELBOURNE’S PSYCHIC EXPO

This year will see two live music acts performing as well as two big screens to give racegoers the ideal view of everything that is happening. The Werribee Racing Club is also presenting the 2013 TAB Werribee Cup Day Draw. Punters will have the chance to win one of five prizes including a home theatre package. There will also be a special members draw and children’s entertainment on course. “We are really encouraging everyone in Wyndham who would like to see the race club and this facility prosper to come along to the Werribee Cup,” Kendell said. “It is really important that they get behind the club and turn it into a date that starts to have its own tradition and own history so that we can get people to lock it in,” he said. “We are confident that over a period of a couple of years we can really grow it into something special. “This is primetime and the best date the club has had for seven years. “To have this here, we want to keep it and really make something out of it.”

Life has been a little rough, so I’m ready for a new beginning where I can really build my conidence. If you’re patient with me, in time I’ll reward you with years of affection. I really enjoy being around people, so I would love to spend lots of time inside with you. My new owners will need to have a consult with our behaviour team to discuss my issues with handling. I don’t need a huge amount of grooming, but I’d enjoy a quick brush every few days. I would like to live in a mature family, as kids can be a bit overwhelming for me.

This is Gypsy the Maltese terrier cross who was treated in our hospital for gastroenteritis after eating cooked bones.

Dealing with your dog’s dodgy tummy GASTROENTERITIS is commonly seen in puppies and adult dogs with vomiting and/or diarrhoea being the typical signs. A very common cause of gastroenteritis is dietary indiscretion. This includes eating spoilt leftovers, garbage or high fat food. Other causes include viruses, infections and parasites or possibly swallowing a foreign object. If the gastroenteritis is accompanied by a loss of appetite, lethargy or pain then a serious underlying disorder may be present and urgent veterinary attention should be sought. Blood in the faeces or vomit is also a cause for concern especially

for parvovirus in a young puppy. For a bright and happy dog with gastroenteritis we usually withhold all food for 24 hours but still give water. Then a bland diet, such as boiled chicken and white rice, is fed for two to three days. We check that the pet’s parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. If signs persist for more than a few days the pet may become dehydrated. Blood tests and X-rays may be required in some cases as well as medical treatment with fluids, antibiotics and prescription diets. The good news is that most dogs with gastroenteritis will respond well to the correct treatment.

Dogs in hot cars are in danger THERE has been an increasing number of reports of dogs being left in cars by their owners for varying lengths of time. This is an extremely dangerous practice because the temperature in cars can rise dramatically even on mild days. Owners are reminded to never leave their dog unattended in a car. Dogs die very quickly from heat stress in these situations. The death would be slow and agonising for the helpless dog. Anyone who sees a dog left in a car unattended should take the following steps: 1. Attempt to locate the driver of the car and explain that the dog is in great danger even if left for only a few minutes;

2. If the dog is in distress, call triple-zero and ask for police to attend, explain the situation and police will make every effort to respond quickly; 3. Call the RSPCA on 9244 2237, they may not be able to respond as quickly as the police but inspectors will make the job a priority and investigate any possible offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Tests conducted by Melbourne’s Metropolitan Ambulance Service on a 29 degree day with the car’s air conditioning having cooled the interior to a comfortable 20 degrees showed it took just 10 minutes for the temperature to more than double to 44 degrees.

First class reunion held By CHARLENE MACAULAY IT WAS the school reunion to end all school reunions. Footscray Tech’s class of 1938 got together last week to mark their 75th reunion at Whitten Oval. The reunion started with a guided tour of Western Bulldogs memorabilia, then lunch and a coach ride around Footscray to see how the suburb had changed over the past seven decades.

Wal Hopkins, who co-ordinated the event, said the group had hosted a 50-year reunion back in 1988 and had met on the last Wednesday in October every year since. “We’re getting down in numbers, as you can well imagine, and I believe this will be our last occasion,” he said. Mr Hopkins said the graduating class of 1938 was a particularly well celebrated one, with Footscray Tech taking out

premierships in football, cricket and baseball that year. “It was a record within the inter-Technical School competitions. “Footscray Tech was established in 1915 for the purpose of giving instruction in Applied Science, Engineering, Management, Art, Business Studies and Trade. It was later taken over Victoria University and is now VU’s Footscray Nicholson campus.

Students eager to serve VICTORIA University’s training restaurant VenU has reopened for business. The restaurant, which operates out of VU’s Footscray Nicholson campus, opened at VU’s Nicholson St campus in October 2010 as a practical way for TAFE hospitality students to build up their experience in the kitchen. It has been closed since 2011 due to a lack of students, but is

up and running once again for international Le Cordon Bleu students, who are also studying an associate business degree. Seating 120 people, the restaurant is open to the general public for lunch and dinner until November and will re-open next year. Front of house and meal service work on a rotating roster, allowing students to taste all aspects of the culinary world, while cooking demonstrations

in the two large training kitchens are projected onto plasma screens, recorded and placed online for later student reference. “It’s part of their training so that they can get experience in the service environment. You can’t really prepare chefs if they’re not used to preparing for customers,” lead trainer for Le Cordon Bleu Gavin Draper said. For bookings, call 9919 7887.

High profile winners SINCE its gates were first opened in 1862, the Werribee Racing Club has been a favourite spot for racegoers from both country and metropolitan Victoria. The first TAB Werribee Cup was won by Ptah in 1916 and following a two-year break, the next was won by Shako in 1919. One of the most high profile TAB Werribee Cup win-

ners was Makybe Diva, victorious in 2002. The next year the mare went on to win the first of her three Melbourne Cups. Last year’s TAB Werribee Cup was won by Unusual Suspect which stormed home to sweep the field on the line to the delight of its trackside owners. The horse added its name to the club’s rich history books.

TRICHOLOGY Technology specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp problems. Services include hair loss, alopecia, dandruff, psoriasis, dermatitis, hair breakage, dry or oily hair and itchy or scaly scalps. There are a range of products available at the clinic including herbal remedies, amino acids, minerals, specialist shampoos, conditioners and treatments as well as topical lotions and creams. Business owner Pam Jameson-Smith ran a hairdressing business for many years and came across many clients with hair and scalp problems. “I referred clients to a trichologist for treatment and became interested in pursuing a career in the field. The training involved gaining experience working in a hair loss studio and attending many overseas conferences. “I now specialise in hair loss, particularly women’s hair loss. “Women’s hair loss is a delicate subject in which they feel comfortable discussing their issues and problems with me. “I can also provide extra knowledge due to my hairdressing background of 30 years, Pam said. Digital imaging technology is used in the consultation to show and record the current state and progress of the condition and treatment.

Joint approach to traffic challenge

The urban edge

TWO vital sections of Melbourne’s road network - the CityLink Tunnels and West Gate Bridge - will undergo extensive resurfacing works in December. The co-ordinated CityLink and VicRoads project will fast-track the works and avoid prolonged closures over a period of months. Roads Minister Terry Mulder said there would be tunnel and bridge closures at the same time, but VicRoads and CityLink had planned a strategic approach to minimise disruption to drivers. “It is great to see the joint approach by VicRoads and CityLink in dealing with this enormous traffic challenge,” Mr Mulder said. “This is a unique situation with

A YARRAVILLE artist is turning tapestry on its head for her latest exhibition. Jessie Deane threads together more than a million colourful stitches to create Needlepoint West, which depicts many familiar landmarks across the West including the West Gate Bridge, Yarraville Terminal, Altona Refinery and stacks of colourful containers. Ms Deane told Star that paradox was important in her work. Needlepoint West epitomises her quest to subvert a medium that might traditionally be considered quaint, domestic or pretty, to portray images of industry, transport infrastructure and the built environment. “I’m drawn to oppositional forces and attracted to counterpoint,” she said. “I find examples of contradiction wherever I look in the Western Suburbs. I love living in the West but worry about breathing the air. I love the shapes and the colour of the urban landscape, but tire of the hum of traffic.” Needlepoint West has been a threeyear project for Ms Deane, who has fit in her creative side around her work. Ms Deane, who works off photographs, said she has had many close scrapes trying to get the exhibition together. “It can look suspicious standing outside the Altona Refinery taking photos, and obviously I stayed outside the boundary of the refinery, but I did get accosted by security, and they wanted to look at my camera,” she said. “More recently I was taking night photos of the docks, and that was really kind of hard core where the lights came on and they followed us and actually took the camera and deleted all the images.” Needlepoint West opens this Thursday at 6pm at the Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Roslyn Smorgon Gallery and will run until 1 December.

both the CityLink tunnels and the West Gate Bridge needing maintenance work at the same time. Dean Zabrieszach from VicRoads added: “There will never be a good time to close major roads or tunnels, but the work has to be done and we have chosen late December/ early January when traffic volumes are at their lowest.” “The warmer weather will allow CityLink and VicRoads to get the most amount of work done in the shortest possible period of time.” Key travel dates including Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve will not be impacted. Clean sweep agreement By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council staff will start cleaning up Footscray’s CBD this morning after lifting work bans on street cleaning and rubbish collection. The Australia Services Union imposed work bans earlier this month as part of a pay dispute during Enterprise Bargaining Agreement negotiations As a result, bins across Footscray have been overflowing onto footpaths. The industrial action by unions also affected the mowing of sports fields and other maintenance tasks around the municipality. The council has offered a 3.4 per cent pay rise for staff, as well

as other improvements to employee benefits. The new EBA will now be voted on by council staff. Votes will close on 22 November. CEO Vince Haining said he was pleased that the bans had been lifted. “It’s important that we get the City back on track and re-instate normal services for our residents,” Mr Haining said. “Our residents and visitors have been the ones affected by the work bans and I am pleased to see the resumption of normal council services. “We thank the unions for their co-operation in not extending the work bans any further.”

Swimming journey

1092243-EP38-13

AFTER celebrating 40 years of teaching swimming, Paul Sadler’s Swimland introduces the Swimland Journey program. The Swimland Journey reinforces a core value of celebrating children’s achievements by creating four Very Proud Moments that give children special recognition. When the child gains their Maxi Pink certificate, that child is becoming an independent survivor who is familiar with the water. At this point they learn freestyle and backstroke simultaneously. To celebrate this very proud moment the child receives a Goggle Licence and a voucher to purchase a pair of goggles. The second Very Proud Moment occurs when the child gains their Green certificate. This is when the child learns all the aquatic recreational options they can safely participate in when they pass the third Swimland Very Proud Moment, the Swordy 1km Gold Medal. The child is given access to a five minute online video showing the recreational options available to them by using a password to Green World on the Swimland website. To complete the journey the children take on an exciting new challenge to successfully complete their Swimland diploma comprising four milestones.

Trauma rights change By NICOLE VALICEK ROAD accident victims and their families will be hurt by changes to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) scheme, according to Member for Altona District Jill Hennessy. Ms Hennessy said legislation introduced by the Napthine Government and expected to be voted on last week was a savage attack on the rights of victims of road trauma. She said under the proposed scheme grieving families of people who die or are severely injured in transport accidents will be denied compensation. “Under the changes, a family

member can only claim to have suffered from the death of their closest relatives if they can prove they were unable to work for three years after the accident occurred,” she said. “This means children, retirees, stay-at-home parents and people who can’t work due to disability will be instantly excluded from receiving assistance to help put their lives back together.” She said under the current TAC scheme, family members are allowed to claim compensation for mental injury or nervous shock. And a further change includes abolishing the right of family members to make a claim if the dead

or injured relative attempted to, or committed, suicide. However, according to a letter to the editor written by TAC CEO Janet Dore on 29 October, public commentary about the proposed reforms has been “misleading and alarming”. “The TAC is committed to supporting Victorians who are injured or lose their loved ones in a transport accident,” Ms Dore said. She said the proposed legislative changes will increase some of the benefits available to regional Victorians, as well as ensure the scheme’s long term viability to help all Victorians who need TAC support into the future.

“We’ve increased family counselling from $5870 to $15,000 ensuring families have access to more support at such a difficult time.” Ms Dore said other new supports include increasing funds granted for funeral expenses and family travel expenses and establishing a modern definition of serious mental illness. “This will not exclude Victorians with a mental injury from funded TAC support or from compensation,” she said. “The proposed changes will simply bring mental injuries in line with physical injuries, in that only people with severe mental injuries can sue for damages.”

International education boost VICTORIA University Vice-Chancellor Peter Dawkins has cautiously welcomed the Premier’s release of a comprehensive five-year strategy to support the international education market in Victoria. The strategy outlines the Victorian Government’s plans for strengthening the State’s international education sector and promoting Victoria’s education services to the world. “International education is Victoria’s single biggest export earner,” Prof Dawkins said. “However, the global export of education is becoming much more competitive, and we must keep innovating if Victoria is to remain at the forefront of this industry.” Professor Dawkins said the Victorian ViceChancellors’ Committee, which he chaired, was optimistic about the announcement of plans for a scheme to offer discounted Myki tickets for international student travel on public transport. The scheme is set to be jointly funded by universities and the Government. “Victoria was the last State in Australia not to have a discount travel scheme for international students, and the Victorian Vice-Chancellors have been afraid for some time that this could have a negative impact on students’ perception of how welcoming we are as a study destination. “We should remember that international education not only generates export income, but is also critical in strengthening our global relationships.”

Bruce Light and James Fraser want Brooklyn’s dust levels reduced. 49150

Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Brooklyn residents in dust-busting blues By ALESHA CAPONE A BIGGER focus on businesses operating in Brooklyn is needed to bust toxic dust levels in the suburb, according to a community activist. This year, Brooklyn recorded its 100th day since 2009 in which PM-10 dust levels exceeded recommended health levels. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) recommends people should only be exposed to five days per year when PM10 levels are high. PM10 refers to dust particles which can cause medical problems if people are consistently exposed to them, including respiratory symptoms in healthy adults and children.

Bruce Light, from the Yarraville On the Nose Community Group, said the state EPA should not attribute the high Brooklyn dust levels on weather patterns and unsealed roads - such as Bunting Rd and Jones Rd. “The focus must be on the industrial/transport activities in the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct and surrounding areas,” he said. Mr Light said the State Government needed to legislate for container parks and trucking yards to conduct their business on sealed areas and for recycling operations to be inside enclosed buildings. “In 2011/12, a temporary dust monitoring station was installed in

Sunshine West approximately one kilometre north of the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct,” he said. “Dust levels recorded at this location were within national and world health standards and similar, if not the same, as recordings observed at the West Footscray monitoring station. “The weather in Sunshine West is exactly the same weather residents experience in Brooklyn.” An EPA spokeswoman said a report on Brooklyn’s air monitoring said “hot, dry and windy conditions” led to a corresponding increase in rising PM-10 levels last year. The spokeswoman said a comprehensive EPA compliance pro-

gram for dust producing industries has seen 29 pollution abatement notices issued to businesses since last month. “EPA uses the weather to help explain the fluctuations in the number of days exceeding the daily PM10 air quality objective from year to year,” she said. “The weather doesn’t directly cause the poor air quality in Brooklyn, but it certainly can facilitate it. “Due to the face that the Brooklyn area experiences northerly winds more frequently than east to south easterly winds in Sunshine West the air quality differs.”

Rail protest heats up in Sunshine By ALESHA CAPONE AROUND 50 people attended a community rally in Sunshine to express anger about the noise, visual amenity, access, pollution and a lack of consultation on the Regional Rail Link project. Residents and members

of the Fix the Links Action Group carried placards which read, ‘Consult not railroad’ and ‘Don’t drive us up the wall, cut the rail in’. “It’s been absolutely disgusting about the way we’ve been consulted about things which affect us,” resident Alisa

Page said. Another resident, Maurice Sibelle, addressed the crowd and expressed concerns about a noise wall the RRLA have proposed, building along the Brimbank section of the rail corridor. See next week’s Star for the full story on the rail protest.

Protesters gathered in Sunshine to express their anger. 109332 Picture: ALESHA CAPONE

CYCLISTS in the West are set to benefit from a $2.36 million cash injection aimed at boosting safety on three popular cycling routes. As part of this package, $1.8 million will improve safety and access to and from the popular Footscray Rd shared path at three locations. “The Footscray Rd path is a popular commuter route, heavily used by cyclists travelling between the city and Melbourne’s West,” Roads Minister Terry Mulder said. Member for Western Metropolitan Region Bernie Finn said traffic signals and bike lanterns would be installed at the intersection of Whitehall and Parker streets in Footscray at a cost of $1.1 million, which will give cyclists priority access through the intersection. A further $700,000 will also be invested to signalise the slip lanes where Footscray Rd intersects with Pearl River Rd and Waterfront Way, while safety will also be improved for cyclists on Mount Alexander Rd between Maribyrnong Rd and Mooltan St in Travancore, and Racecourse Rd between Holland Court and Wellington St in Flemington. To download a map of the bike paths, visit: http://tinyurl.com/k5uvpky

Precious water THE Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC) has implemented a water recycling project to save around seven million litres of water each year. The water recycling project includes the harvesting of rainwater from the aquatic centre’s roof for reuse in the swimming pools and also the collection of backwash water from the pools to run through a treatment system and reused in the pools. Council started the project to reduce both water use and costs, as well as reduce the amount of pool backwash water discharged into the sewerage system. A significant feature of MAC’s roof is the construction profile which allows virtually all of the water running off the roof to be harvested as it runs to one point on the building. Depending on the rainfall, this process collects up to two million litres of rainwater per year to store in the water tanks, ready to use in the pools. MAC has previously introduced a cogeneration plant which produces electricity to heat the swimming pools and decreases the centre’s carbon emissions by 15 per cent. The centre has also installed timed showers and push button taps to save water.

By ADEM SARICAOGLU YARRAVILLE Club put on a batting clinic against Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Senior Division on Saturday. After the Clubbers chose to have a bat on their home deck at Walker Oval, opening batsman Andrew Cullen produced a stunning knock of 160. After the first two wickets fell for 77 early in the day, new recruit Aaron Mato then joined Cullen at the crease. In a stand that could well decide the two-dayer, the Cullen-Mato combination added a whopping 223 runs to the Clubbers’ total, pushing it to 300 by the time Mato was finally removed for 102, bowled by Travis Waring. Cullen was removed soon after but from there Yarraville Club flourished once more, with Adam Contessa providing a handy 52 to help push his side to 6/383 by stumps. Clubbers coach Emmett Bronca was full of praise for both Cullen and Mato the following day. “For Andrew Cullen to open the batting and get 160 for the day, which is his highest ever score, was absolutely fantastic,” Bronca said. “And then for Aaron Mato to make 102, his first hundred for Yarraville Club, was a superb knock as well.” Bronca went on to acknowledge the quality of the 223-run partnership Cullen and Mato produced. “They pushed the field back and then were getting singles - they pushed hard between the wickets and they really seemed to gel together,” Bronca said. “It was a huge effort from both of the boys. “Then Adam Contessa came in at the end and got 52 off 28 balls, which really does show the depth and seniority of our top order to get us to a good score.” It seems only Mother Nature stands in the way of Yarraville Club’s pursuit of victory this coming weekend, but Bronca will be keen to ensure his side brings its A-game in defending 383. “Nothing changes there,” Bronca declared. “We’ll just do what we do well. All the bowlers have a role to play within the team and we just hope to execute everything we’ve been practising for the last few weeks.”

DERBY Day at Flemington saw horses from the Werribee quarantine facility again hitting top form on the track. The Andrew Balding trained Side Glance crossed the line first in the Group One Longines Mackinnon Stakes. That was just the start of the good results though with the Ed Walker trained Ruscello taking out first place in the group three Lexus Stakes. The victory has qualified Ruscello for the Melbourne Cup. In total, 11 horses based at the Werribee quarantine facility will be competing in the Melbourne Cup. GRAND United is on top of the ladder in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A1 Turf competition after scoring an impressive win over Williamstown Congs on Saturday. United sent Congs in to bat at Parsons Reserve and it proved to be a masterstroke by skipper Glenn Sullivan, as the visitors stumbled to finish their 40-over dig all out for 113. Led by opener Dillon Hinge (42), Grand United cruised home in its chase, reaching 4/120 by the end of the 27th over. In other A1 Turf results, West Newport got its first win of the summer, taking care of St Johns’ 112 in 24 overs, finishing 2/114. Meanwhile Gellibrand is third on the table after getting the job done against the Williamstown Colts on Saturday. David Croft scored 80 to help Gellibrand to 6/168 - a total the Colts could not match, falling 81 runs short. Williamstown Imperials (4/196) was also a winner over Bellbridge (7/150) in round four action. BLUE skies, mild temperatures and a slight breeze made for perfect racing conditions for the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing, with A Grade’s Simon Hurn making it two wins in a row. Hurn just held out St Kilda rider Richard Braic and Brett Hickford in the sprint.

Bulldogs’ bats have a blast By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater is in a strong position after day one of its Premier Cricket clash with Prahran on the weekend. After being sent in to bat by the home team, Bulldogs’ openers Dean Russ and Anthony Barton wasted no time making themselves at home in the middle. The pair added a brilliant 170 for the first wicket with Russ blasting 70 off 102 balls while Barton fell just short of his century and was out for 91. However, Footscray’s middle order wasn’t able to capitalise on the start as Prahran launched a fight back with the ball. Both Russ and Barton were dismissed without a run being added to the tally and in the blink of an eye, Travis Dean, Dylan Kight and Michael Hill were also back in the pavilion. Luckily for Footscray, Sunam Gautam was able to steady the ship

with a hard-fought 52 while Guy Walker and Hamish Winter-Irving worked hard at the crease. The Bulldogs’ innings eventually came to a close in the 84th over with the score at 308. For Prahran, James Miller was the pick of the bowlers and finished with figures of 4/74 while Bryce McGain took 3/85. The early finish to the innings gave Footscray two overs to bowl and the results were immediate when Jake Haberfield removed Nicholas Morrey for a duck to have Prahran reeling at 1/0. The True Blues will resume their innings at 1/6 on Saturday. It was a similar story for Footscray in the second XI, with the Bulldogs seemingly cruising at 5/199 on day one of their clash, also against Prahran. But a late collapse was again on the cards, this time dismissing the club for 226. In reply, Prahran is 0/17.

The Williamstown resident thought that there were quite a few riders in B who should have joined in on A Grade, with low numbers reducing the quality of A’s racing. On the bell lap 39-year-old Hurn ensured he was not going to be overrun. “I made sure I was out the front and had a small gap turning onto the straight, and then worked to maintain the gap.” Hurn is hoping to continue his winning streak and is hoping for a hat-trick on his next outing.

The B Grade race was dominated by the inform Damien Harris powering away at the front, as well as quite a few attacks and breakaways from the likes of Leigh Kelly, Danny Bellis, and Josh Toohey. But the bunch was willing to chase and worked well to bring back all breaks. The bunch sprint saw an improving Richard Conejo take the early kick, the 40-year-old said he was enjoying improving after a difficult year.“ I went early and tried to pick which wheel to follow,” he said.“ I saw a couple of guys ease up on the straight so I went to the right and just kept pushing - I wasn’t concerned about anyone behind and didn’t know how close anyone was.” Point Cook resident Conejo was a bike length clear of second placed Travis Small who held off a fast finishing Mark Micallef and Ben Ryan. Conejo has been racing for five seasons, but has struggled with form due to recurring tonsillitis, and feels things are turning around. In other results, Andrew Schieseck won C Grade while Brett Manning took out D Grade.

Jet forms up for selection By ADEM SARICAOGLU WESTERN Jets best-and-fairest winner David Iaccarino is ready for senior footy. And after a year of dealing with persistent shoulder issues and equally stifling opponents, you’d expect him to be. The 18-year-old Williamstown product had a year worth savouring in the TAC Cup, finding plenty of the footy on a weekly basis and even managing to penetrate on the scoreboard with 16 goals. His form also warranted a VFL debut with Williamstown, in which he proved just how damaging a senior player he’ll turn out to be with two goals and 23 disposals against Bendigo. “Playing with Willy this year really made me excited about next year,” Iaccarino said. “I feel like I can fit the mould pretty good, so I’m definitely excited about senior footy and I want to play at the best level I can play at.” Jets coach Torin Baker knows just how well the Barry Round Medallist can stamp his authority on a game of footy, and has been staunch in his belief Iaccarino developed into one of the TAC Cup’s better midfielders throughout his stellar season in blue and gold. “He had some more attention due to that,” Baker explained. “But he was still able to find a way to be able to really impact games and that’s just due to the fact that he can win his own ball and he’s really good at winning some uncontested ball as well.” Iaccarino was cleared to play after injuring his troublesome shoulder early in the season and as a result was hampered in certain areas of his game. That the talented midfielder was still able to produce what he did, despite being forced to alter his tackling technique and on several occasions playing through the pain of numerous partial dislocations, impressed Baker even more.

Draft Watch David Iaccarino DOB: 20/12/1994 Junior club: Williamstown Position: Midfielder 2013 Average Disposals: 24.56 (18 games) Torin Baker says: “In the end, a lot of it comes down to performance and as far as we go, David’s been one of our absolute very best. He’s just shown that he can really dominate TAC Cup footy.”

David Iaccarino gathered 28 disposals and kicked a goal against Dandenong in round five of the TAC Cup this season. 97935 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT “When any player can play under duress and still perform it shows that they’re a player that’s got some real character about them,” Baker noted. “The fact he was able to cope with that says a lot about him.” Late last month Iaccarino under-

went the shoulder re-construction he’d been slated for earlier in the year and is currently in the middle of rehab, but he is expecting to be ready to play a big part in 2014, wherever he ends up. Despite missing out on Vic Metro selection and combine invitations,

Iaccarino is comfortable with letting his formidable body of recent on-field work speak for itself during the upcoming AFL draft period. “I don’t read too much into it,” he said. “Being a 19-year-old (in Decem-

ber), I knew it was going to be hard to make those sorts of things, so I wasn’t too worried about that at all. “If I’m good enough, I’ll get picked. So it doesn’t really fuss me too much.”

Key defender Fahey signs with Seagulls WILLIAMSTOWN has continued its busy off-season, adding key defender David Fahey to its playing stocks. Fahey joins the Seagulls from the Essendon Football Club having spent the past year with the Bombers’ VFL side and the previous three seasons with Coburg.

After playing for the Calder Cannons as a junior, Fahey has played 18 senior VFL games and was also a member of Coburg’s 2012 premiership winning development side. With Essendon fielding a large contingent of AFL players each week he struggled for senior opportunities, playing only four senior games but

was one of the most dominant defenders playing for Aberfeldie in the Essendon District Football League. Fahey was recognised for his strong season by being named full back in the EDFL Team of the Year. Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said that Fahey was an-

other important piece in the Seagulls’ recruiting puzzle. “He’s going to be very important for us down back,” he said. “Fahey’s a player we’ve always rated when watching him over the past few years and we’re delighted to bring him across. We know he can perform a

real lock down role down back, as well as being able to play as a third tall so he’s going to be a key part of our make up next year. “Dave’s probably been a victim of alignments over the past few years so he is pretty excited about the opportunities with the club going stand-alone in 2014.”

AFL boost for Deer Park WHILE it might be cricket season, footy news seems to be what everyone is still talking about and everyone was buzzing with the news that dual Hawthorn premiership player Brent Guerra will join his brother Luke at Deer Park in the WRFL next year. It is a boost for the reigning premiers, who will also have James Condos back, as well as a few of their Division 2 Premiership team from 2011. One big surprise for me is the news that David Mitchell is putting the boots back on for North Footscray in Division 2, under new coaches Shaun Borlase and Matty Walsh. The three ex Hoppers Crossing favourites will certainly give the Devils a much needed boost. I HAVE mentioned the new WRFL club the Tarneit Tigers and the return to the WRFL of Werribee Districts, to be coached by Wade Chapman, but there is another new club launching in Westbourne Grammarians FC, which is rising from the ashes of the Old Westbourne AFC. The new club will remain at the Westbourne School and has appointed Roger Hand as Senior Coach with Justin Johns returning from Clunes as a playing assistant coach. Fab Gatti will be looking after the under 19s and the club will be playing in Division 4. Anyone interested in playing, or being involved should contact the club westbournegrammarians@gmail.com I do wonder where all these new clubs are going to get players from, but I guess we will have to wait and see. POINT Cook Football Club will be fielding its first ever girls team in 2014, and has appointed Belinda McErvale as inaugural coach. Belinda is well known in the area in her job as a teacher at Carranbach College. She has played for Melbourne Uni in the Women’s Football League for over 10 years with more than 150 games under her belt. Her experience and enthusiasm should make for a great team atmosphere. Anyone interested in playing or being involved should contact Mark King 0447 156 108 or markk4@bigpond.com.au AFTER my experiences this year with the Auskick program, which I absolutely loved, the importance of junior coaching was really brought home to me. It is great to see most sports now with their own version of Auskick, with the aim of teaching kids the basic skills of the sport and the importance of teamwork and physical activity. The hole in the system now, is when kids hit their teens and other activities take them away from sport. For me, I remember not playing any sport from the age of 17 to about 28, because of work commitments. That is happening younger these days as kids have parttime jobs. All sports have to look at the 12 to 16 year olds and come up with a way to keep them involved, because that is where the drop off is happening. Overall participation figures are up in many sports, but I think there are gender and age factors, that have resulted in what I would term as ‘creative accounting’. Got any ideas? LITTLE River Cicket Club is having a Past Players and Officials Function on Saturday 30 November from 2pm, at its home ground, Little River Reserve. The Firsts will be playing Meredith and there will be raffles, a happy hour and plenty going on. FOOTSCRAY Edgewater young-gun Guy Walker has been selected in the Victorian under-19 cricket side. Walker will pull on the Big V for the national championships, which will be played in Hobart at the start of December. The teenager has enjoyed a solid start to the Premier Cricket season for Footscray with a top score of 35 coming against Casey-South Melbourne in round four. He has also taken two wickets while bowling at a good economy rate. Walker will be joined by some of the best young cricketers from around Australia for the championships. Victorian academy coach Jarrad Loughman is excited about the prospects of his side. “We have a good mix of top and bottom age,” Loughman said. “The bottom agers have the experience from last year of winning the championships in Hobart, where we are going to be playing, so I think that’s a big thing.” The team consists of six top-age players and seven bottom age, of which all but one were part of last season’s title-winning Victorian under-17 squad. Loughman lauded the depth in the state, saying selection was very difficult this season. “We had a lot of talent this season,” he said. “There are a lot of good players who were unlucky to miss selection.”

ers in preparation for the national championships in January. Footscray Edgewater assistant coach Duncan Harrison will be the team’s head coach.

Roadstar Isuzu takes MU-X to the max THE Isuzu D-Max ute will soon have a closely-aligned SUV sibling. The Japanese truck brand, which also imports utes to Australia through a separate distributor, is set to unveil a seven-seat SUV variant currently referred to in-house as the MU-X. The MU-X has already received Australian design approval. Documents indicate the new vehicle will be offered in 2WD and 4WD guises. Reports suggest that SUV is due to be unveiled in Thailand this month, with an Australian release slated for December. Isuzu has offered a sevenseat SUV in Thailand since 2004, called the MU-7, but it has never been sold in Australia. It’s believed the MU-X will sport a front end resembling the new D-Max ute design, which launched in Australia last June. The Isuzu will join a growing crop of rugged SUVs based on dual-cab utes, including the Holden Colorado, Nissan Pathfinder and Mitsubishi Challenger. Ford Australia is also work-

ing on an SUV variant based on the locally-engineered Ranger ute, called the Everest. The Australian-spec DMax is currently powered by a 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine producing 130kW and 380Nm. However, a European version is also available with a 2.5-litre turbo diesel variant which meets strict Euro 5 diesel emission standards that will apply to all Australian vehicles from 2016. The Isuzu brand has played its hand in the Australian SUV market previously as the donor designer of the Holden Jackaroo and Frontera vehicles. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Kia, Isuzu Ute at 22 Morris Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, or call 9974 3799 for more information. Alternatively, visit Western Kia, Isuzu Ute at 51-53 Westwood Drive, Ravenhall, open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm, or call 8390 5165 to learn more. Isuzu Mu-X is set to hit Australian shores in December.
