Call for justice By XAVIER SMERDON A GRIEVING widow who has been waiting two years to find out why her husband died has called for a police investigation to be reopened. Lynette Flowers’ husband of 40 years David was killed on 10 November 2011 while sitting in his car at a roundabout in Laverton North when another driver slammed into him. A police brief which was submitted to the Coroner details the incident and Ms Flowers has read all 159 pages more times than she can count, and every time she reads it she is left asking more questions. According to a statement from the other driver, he felt dizzy and his vision became blurred. He claims to have lost control of his car while driving along the Princes Freeway before taking the Laverton North exit where he became airborne when he drove straight over a roundabout and into David Flowers’ car. According to the police brief, the driver had a stroke the next day while he was in hospital. Ms Flowers, from Werribee, told Star she had serious concerns about the police investigation into her husband’s death. “We’ve been totally let down by the Coroner’s office and the police. We haven’t been given any justice,” Ms Flowers said. Two of Ms Flowers main concerns are that it took police eight months to formally interview the other driver and that despite her solicitors contacting the Coroner’s office monthly since January this year, there has still been no coronial inquest. “Due process just hasn’t occurred with this,” she said. “I can’t move on, think or even function properly. I’m not even on automatic pilot. “This other driver’s innocence or guilt should be decided in the court, not by the police. I want the police to be there to put everything on the record and answer these questions. “There has been no justice for David, for my sons or for myself.” The brief also reveals that the other driver’s medical records were not in the correct order.

Dr Jo Ann Parker wrote on behalf of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine that “the medical notes were not dated adequately and some notes appear to have been misplaced”. State Member for Altona, Jill Hennessy backed Ms Flowers, calling for the Minister for Police and Emergency Services to request a review by Victoria Police into the investigation. “Ms Flowers is not after a witchhunt; she simply requests that her husband’s case be reviewed. I request that the Minister for Police and Emergency Services undertake to ensure that occurs.” Ms Hennessy said. A spokesperson for Victoria Police said they did not interview the other driver for eight months because they were waiting on a medical review, which they received on 5 July 2012. “The interview was conducted once this information was received. Based on the findings of medical experts as part of this review, a decision was made not to pursue the matter and a brief was prepared for non-authorisation,” the spokesperson said. “As the matter is now before the Coroner, it would be inappropriate to comment further.” A spokesperson for the Coroner’s Court said that they were notified in July 2012 that police were no longer pursuing a criminal investigation into Mr Flower’s death. In November 2012 they wrote to Ms Flower’s to say that they were satisfied with all the evidence and they would prepare a written finding into the death, without the need for an inquest. The spokesperson said the process had been delayed by several factors, including an incomplete application form from Ms Flowers requesting an extension of the period allowed to raise concerns with the Coroner. The spokesperson said the matter had now been referred to its Medical Investigation Team and the Coroner would await the referral to decide whether or not an inquest into Mr Flowers death would be held. Ms Flowers said that she just wanted answers and was willing to sell her house to pay for an inquest if necessary. “I’m not after revenge, I just want Lynette Flowers with a photo of her and her husband David on their wedding Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI day. 108742 justice,” she said.

IT IS hard to walk through the Werribee Racing Club’s quarantine centre and not get star struck. For the past few months, racing royalty has called Werribee home as some of the sport’s most high profile trainers, owners and jockeys launch their assaults on the Spring Carnival. Melbourne and Caulfield Cup winner Dunaden is just one of the big names back at Werribee in 2013 and has been joined by other stars of the track including Red Cadeaux, Dandino and Mount Athos. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said it was an exciting time of year. “This facility has only been operating for three years. “Over those three years we have had two Melbourne Cup winners and a Caulfield Cup winner,” he said. “All the connections, they all stay locally which is fantastic for the local community. “They are here every day and they are investing and spending in the local community. “From our point of view that is great to see. “The other thing about having these horses here is the people who are out here every day. “The likes of Gai Waterhouse and Luca Cumani are on the grounds just walking around.” Depending on the result of this year’s Melbourne Cup, Kendell is hoping racegoers attending the TAB Werribee Cup will be in for a special treat. Cup field based at Werribee, a winner in the race that stops the nation could see a special guest on the day. “At some point in the future, statistics will tell you we are probably going to get another winner of the Melbourne Cup that is based here,” Kendell said. “What we will be doing is, the sec-

ond that horse goes over the line at Flemington, I’ll be going to the owner and saying, now you are coming down the straight on TAB Werribee Cup Day. “We have such a good relationship with all these guys... they would be more than happy to do it.”

IT was the quietest Halloween in years last week and I can’t work out why. The shops were full of merchandise for this American celebration, that I have to say I personally really like. The good part, is seeing the kids dressed up, giving them some lollies and sharing a few laughs. Our son Hayden loves handing out the goodies and seeing what the kids are dressed up as. While we did not get the volume of visitors this year, I have to say, they were the best mannered ever and the best dressed. It was also great to see all were chaperoned by an adult and not just out on their own. OUR local community radio station WYN FM is holding a fund-raising trivia night this Saturday at the Werribee Sports Club at Avalon Airport Oval. They have a comedian and hopefully, trivia master John Fastuca, will be well enough to bamboozle everyone with his questions. For more information email wynfm@wynfm.org.au

THE first major grade separation on the Regional Rail Link line is now complete and open for traffic, Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Andrew Elsbury, announced last week. Mr Elsbury was joined by the CEO of RRL to inspect the newly completed Tarneit Rd bridge last Monday. “This project is a big win for my local community of Tarneit, delivering a railway station without creating any level crossings,” Mr Elsbury said. “By far the biggest boon of this project is to enable train

travel to the people of Tarneit without increasing traffic in the local area.” Mr Elsbury said the Tarneit Rd bridge was one of 15 grade separations being delivered along with the Regional Rail Link, which would ensure that no new level crossings would be built. “In fact this project removes two existing level crossings, after the Coalition, on coming to government added additional funds to the Regional Rail Link to ensure the crossings at Anderson Road were removed,” he said. “Level Crossing removal

WHILE we are all frustrated by the inability of anyone to solve out traffic problems in the City of Wyndham, I want to address something I see as a potentially bigger, and more dangerous problem, the driving ability of those people behind the wheel of cars in our city. It might actually be a good thing that some drivers can’t get from point A to point B, because they clearly don’t know the rules, and don’t care about other drivers. One of the worst offenders are driving school cars. On Derrimut Rd the other day an instructor told a learner to push out into oncoming traffic, so he could see if any cars were coming, because his view was being blocked by a turning vehicle. Instructors on mobiles while conducting lessons, cars going through roundabouts without giving way to the right, changing lanes with no use of the blinker. I have seen all this in the last week. If the instructors don’t know the rules, what on earth are the learners learning? I assume, it is just enough to pass their test, and get their licence, which is not good enough.

Drink drive capital of West By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM remains the dangerous driving capital of the West, with one in every 321 drivers caught drink driving over the last 18 months. New figures released by the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council as part of its Annual Report show that more hoons were also caught in Wyndham than in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melton, with a total of 159 being caught over the last year. Only Melton topped Wyndham when it came to speeding drivers,

with 272 drivers being nabbed this year. While Melton and Hobsons Bay both saw a decrease in the number of speeding drivers when compared to the year before, Wyndham and Maribyrnong saw marginal increases. A total of 95 speeding drivers were caught in Hobsons Bay while 83 and 159 were caught in Maribyrnong and Wyndham respectively. A total of 136 drivers were caught above the blood alcohol level in Wyndham, the equivalent of one

in every 351 drivers tested by police. Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong each had around one in 650 drivers nabbed while Melton had one in 523. The figures also pointed towards a worrying trend of drink driving based on gender. In most municipalities men were about twice as likely to be caught drink driving while in Wyndham they were almost three times as likely. In the annual report, chairman Jim Giddings said the community

needed to unite to help lower the amount of dangers on the roads. “The challenges of road safety issues are still there, but by bringing our local communities on board, we will continue to drive changes, including legislative changes, to meet the community’s expectations,” Mr Giddings said. “We still have a long way to go to reduce the over-representation of young drivers involved in road crashes however success has been achieved with the limited resources at our disposal.”

Council concern WYNDHAM Council has written to the Victorian Local Government Electoral Review Panel in a bid to increase voter participation in the municipality. Wyndham Mayor Heather Marcus said there had been a decrease in the number of voters in the Wyndham area at the last council election. “My biggest concern is achieving the highest level of participation in local government elections,” Cr Marcus said. “Ballot papers counted in Wyndham City’s 2012 election was 67.34 per cent compared with 73.89 per cent in the November 2008 election. HOPPERS Crossing’s Keith Watts can still remember World War 1, when as a child he was taken to watch the soldiers march off to war. Last week, Mr Watts celebrated his 100th birthday with a glass of whisky and a piece of cake. The centenarian told Star he never thought he would make it to the landmark age. “I remember when I was 30 thinking, ‘gee, I’m really getting old and over the hill now’,” Mr Watts said. “I don’t feel any different now that I’m 100, except I’m stronger now than I was 100 years ago.” While Mr Watts spent most of his life in the northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne, he is now living at Sunrise Supported Living in Hoppers Crossing. As he celebrated his birthday last Thursday, Mr Watts reminisced about his two children, eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. “Some of my grandchildren now have grandchildren,” he said. As far as the secret to a long life goes, Mr Watts said there was no legitimate answer, but he still liked to joke about what made him live so long. “You have to be very lucky to live this long,” he said. “Choose the right parents and marry a good cook. And drink good whisky.” He said along with raising his family, his fondest memories were of the people he had worked with over the years when he was a development engineer. Mr Watts only gave up driving three years ago and amazingly does not require hearing aids or glasses.

CUP

Unusual Suspect stormed home to claim the 2012 TAB Werribee Cup last December. 91764 Picture: MATHEW LYNN

Prime time for Cup By LIAM TWOMEY JUST eight days after the race that stops a nation, another champion of the track will be celebrated with the running of the 2013 TAB Werribee Cup. After being run in the lead up to Christmas last year, excitement levels are bursting at the seams with this month’s Cup taking place in the heart of the spring racing calendar. As well as following on from the Flemington Carnival, Werribee is also one of a host of weekday provincial cups including Kyneton, Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo making it a must stop destination for racegoers. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the spring timeslot was fantastic for the club. “It is amazing,” Kendell said.

Tuesday, 5 November, 2013 Page 3W

“To be back in the prime time of the spring racing carnival is great for everyone. “It also fits with other spring provincial race cups with clubs of a similar stature. “That gives us a real opportunity to grow and get back to where the Werribee Cup was.” As well as the running of the prestigious TAB Werribee Cup, there will also be seven other races on the day. The first race is scheduled for around noon. “The people around Werribee have told us how excited they are to be based in the spring,” Kendell said. “We have tried to pick up elements of what people have told us for our planning as well. “They loved the spring date and they loved the car parks so we have re-introduced car parks down the main straight.

“As well as that we will have the mixture of the corporate marquees, the mini marquees, the car sites and trackside enclosures so people will have a lot of options which is what we want to provide.” Anyone wishing to book a corporate marquee, mini marquee or buy tickets for the TAB Werribee Cup is encouraged to contact the club via its website, www.werribeeracingclub.com. au or call 1300 139 402. “We have just launched a brand new website,” Kendell said. “Previously we had one for the Werribee Function Centre and one for the Werribee Racing Club. “Now we have integrated them together so we have the one site. “They can do their complete online booking or they can use the information and call through to us.”

THREE Wyndham men have made history by taking on the world in their unusual sport for the first time ever. Will Taylor from Werribee, Wayne Slattery from Hoppers Crossing and Bradd Smith from Werribee were part of the first ever Australian Wheelchair Handball Team to compete in the World Wheelchair Handball Championships in Brazil recently. While the team had only been together for 12 months, they managed to upstage many of their competitors and take home a fourth place trophy. Mr Slattery said that Brazil, who were the clear favourites

for the tournament, took home first place after being together for eight years. Mr Taylor, 20, who has muscular dystrophy, told Star he felt privileged to be able to represent his country. “It was the best feeling ever,” Mr Taylor said. “When I was younger all I wanted to do was represent Australia in something, and now I’ve done that.” Mr Taylor and Mr Slattery were so impressive in their performances that they were selected for the All Stars team. Mr Slattery said while the Australian team was the only non-South American contingent, the International Wheelchair Handball Federation had

now expressed interest in holding the 2015 event in Werribee. “We felt like we set a pretty good example. No one in the team had been to South America before and half the team hadn’t even been out of Australia, so it was a new experience for everyone,” Mr Slattery said. “We’re now looking at holding the next championships here in Werribee and we’ve been speaking to the local council about that. “We’re hopeful the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre redevelopment will be sufficiently finished by then.” The team practices every Thursday at Whitten Oval from 6pm to 7pm.

Patients increase By YASEMIN TALAT WERRIBEE Mercy Hospital staff treated a record number of patients in the last quarter resulting in major improvements to the hospital’s overall performance. The latest Victorian Health Services Performance data shows that the Werribee Mercy Hospital was performing well as part of the public health system, treating more patients than ever before. The hospital admitted 6438 patients in the three months to the end of June, an increase of almost 1000 patients. The hospital also admitted more emergency patients in the June quarter. Mercy Health Executive Director Health Services Linda Mellor said the Victorian Health Services Performance data was a credit to all Werribee Mercy

Hospital staff. “The June quarter was extremely busy at Werribee Mercy Hospital with a record number of patients being cared for,” Ms Mellor said. “We have seen a reduction in those waiting for elective surgery, and a greater number of patients being treated in our outpatient specialist clinics,” she said. The hospital improved its performance in a number of key areas including reducing the number of patients on the elective surgery waiting list from 716 at the end of June 2012 to 510 at the end of this quarter. Overall staff treated 919 patients from the elective surgery waiting list in the June quarter, up on the 690 waiting list admissions in the previous months. The hospital also performed well in its treatment of emer-

gency patients. One hundred per cent of Category 1 emergency patients were treated immediately on arrival at the hospital’s emergency department. And 87 per cent of Category 2 patients were treated within 10 minutes of arrival, an increase from the 78 per cent in the June quarter of last year and beating the state-wide target of 80 per cent. Treatment of Category 3 patients was also up from last quarter, 81 per cent compared to 77 per cent last June quarter and again above the benchmark target of 75 per cent. “These results are testament to our hard-working and dedicated teams, and improved efficiencies throughout our hospital,” Ms Mellor said. “We are now preparing for a busy Christmas period.”

Technology cuts cancer treatment By CHARLENE MACAULAY AN INNOVATIVE new cancer treatment has come to the West. Footscray’s Western Radiation Oncology Centre started using Volume Metric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) last week, a state-of-the-art technique that delivers more accurate treatment and cuts down treatment time. The treatment is most effective on prostate cancer and some head and neck cancers and is delivered via a linear accelerator, which is used in radiotherapy treatment. The service is available to both public and private patients. Dr Mario Guerrieri said

VMAT had slashed treatment time from 15 minutes to three to four minutes and can reduce side-effects associated with radiotherapy treatment. “When you target them accurately, it kills the cancer slowly on a day-by-day treatment,” Dr Guerrieri said. “Linear accelerators have been around for a long time. “They evolve a bit like a car - it’s evolves over time and a lot of the advances are driven by the software. “The new technique that we have here is using our existing technology and delivering treatment in a more precise, accurate way, so that we are able to deliver higher doses to the

tumour and lower doses to the surrounding normal tissues. “Even though it’s a little hospital, we’ve got all the stateof-the-art equipment for radiotherapy.” Hoppers Crossing resident John Ware was two days into 38 days of radiation therapy when he spoke to Star last week, and said the VMAT treatment was quick and pain-free. The 69-year-old was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June. “There’s nothing to it,” he said. “You just lie down and it (the machine) circles around you there’s no pain or anything.”

TAB WERRIBEE

CUP

Savvy styles are set for Spring THE 2013 TAB Werribee Cup is about more than just racing. In fact, the spring timeslot is the perfect occasion for racegoers to enjoy the fun, food and fashion available on course. For the style savvy, the Fashions on the Field event will again take centre stage in front of the grandstand with the competition expected to be just as hot off track as on. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the on course entertainment was a highlight of last year’s Cup. “We are doing Fashions on the Field and that went fantastically last year,” he said. “Historically it used to be out the back but again we are going out in front on the grand stand because people loved to be able to watch that in between the races last year. “If entrants want to go on the website they can download the registration form and then fill it in and send it back to us. “Otherwise they can register online.” As well as the fashion, there will be plenty of eating and entertainment options available at the course.

MELBOURNE’S PSYCHIC EXPO

This year will see two live music acts performing as well as two big screens to give racegoers the ideal view of everything that is happening. The Werribee Racing Club is also presenting the 2013 TAB Werribee Cup Day Draw. Punters will have the chance to win one of five prizes including a home theatre package. There will also be a special members draw and children’s entertainment on course. “We are really encouraging everyone in Wyndham who would like to see the race club and this facility prosper to come along to the Werribee Cup,” Kendell said. “It is really important that they get behind the club and turn it into a date that starts to have its own tradition and own history so that we can get people to lock it in,” he said. “We are confident that over a period of a couple of years we can really grow it into something special. “This is primetime and the best date the club has had for seven years. “To have this here, we want to keep it and really make something out of it.”

TARNEIT resident Jamie Joseph is preparing to climb new heights and beat his own personal best at the annual Eureka Climb 2013. The Eureka Climb sees participants climb, walk or run the 88 floors, which is equivalent to 1642 stairs, up Melbourne’s tallest building to the Eureka Skydeck. Mr Joseph will compete in the Elite Category of the Eureka Climb in which he is seeded number nine. The 21-year-old student and fitness fanatic was preparing for his third Eureka Climb and hoped to complete the challenge in under 10 minutes. “Last year I did it in just over 11 minutes,” Mr Joseph said. “This year I hope to break the 10 minute mark.” To prepare for the event Mr Joseph does kickboxing which involves a lot of leg work like running and skipping. Mr Joseph is no stranger to a challenge. He regularly takes part in an array of challenges including popular obstacle style events like Tough Mudder and The Stampede and has also run marathons. “Fitness is a really big part of my life and I always do all the events that I can,” he said. “It’s also my way of helping raise money for charities.” “I’ve always loved helping out other people and being able to give a bit of my time to help someone else.” Mr Joseph is studying to be-

SOUTHERN Rural Water has lifted the Blue Green Algae (BGA) warnings from Werribee Weir. Manager of Sustainability Craig Smith said the BGA bloom at the weir had dissipated to levels where the warnings to irrigators could be lifted. “Our regular testing has shown that the levels of BGA in the weir have now dropped,” he said. The warnings were lifted in an announcement last week. Mr Craig said BGA occurred naturally in waterways and could sometimes bloom to unsafe levels without warning. He said blooms often caused a discolouration of the water and odours, but this was not necessarily always the case. Southern Rural Water have urged irrigators to remain vigilant and asked the public to contact them or Melbourne Water if they suspect a bloom at Werribee Weir. NO DEPOSIT FINANCE NO REPAYMENTS Dishes of distinction UNTIL 2015* Kenny Weir and Lauren Wambach are joining forces to pick out the best dishes in the Picture: CONTRIBUTED West. 109126

By CHARLENE MACAULAY

THESE bloggers know their food - and they’re keen to celebrate the best of the West. Food bloggers Lauren Wambach from the Footscray Food Blog and Kenny Weir from Consider the Sauce have joined forces to launch The Westies Dishes of Distinction. The awards will celebrate three dishes a year that they believe exemplifies good western suburbs grub. The selection process will take into account taste, consistency, pricing, and a sense of uniqueness or tradition. Ms Wambach and Mr Weir said the awards were about cel-

ebrating the big food culture across the West and the people who create it. In addition to her blog, Ms Wambach has contributed to food sections in The Age, Broadsheet and Time Out and campaigns such as the Footscray Food Map. She also runs regular food tours in Footscray. Mr Weir, who became a resident of the West more than a decade ago, has used his love of the culinary arts to expand son Benny’s palate. “It’s been a thrill and a privilege running one of only two Melbourne food blogs dedicated to the Western Suburbs,” Ms Wambach said.

“We see The Westies - Dishes of Distinction as a really exciting and enjoyable way of broadening appreciation of the food culture of the Western Suburbs”. Mr Weir added: “It’s going to be a tough choice, but who better than Lauren and I to make it?” The 2013 winners will be announced at the combined Footscray Food Blog/Consider the Sauce Spring Picnic at Yarraville Gardens on Saturday 30 November. The picnic starts 11am, and The Westies will announced at noon.

Sixty years of loving marriage By XAVIER SMERDON A MARRIAGE that has lasted 60 years might never have happened if Cecilia did not kick a ball onto a roof. A 12-year-old Cecilia was playing with her friends in Liverpool when the ball they were kicking ended up on the roof of a shop. She asked nearby Johnny Caffery, who was 15-years-old at the time, if he would get the ball down, which he did. For the next few years the two went on group dates and became closer and closer. After proposing to Cecilia for the third time, John finally got the answer he wanted. On 31 October 1953 the young

couple married and since then they have been the best of friends. John, a handyman who enjoys building things with his own hands, never goes out to the shed without giving his wife a kiss, and the couple still hold hands as they walk down the street. In 1965 the couple moved to Australia with their five children and spent just under two years living in what was known as the Brooklyn Hostel. While living there they were sharing a Nissen hut, basically a steel shed, with several other families. John had 15 jobs in two years in a bid to support his family, before finally settling down at a chemical company, where he worked for the next 20 years.

When they first moved to Wyndham, there were still posts out the front of stores for people to tie up their horses. But as far as having a long and happy marriage goes, neither John or Cecilia thought there was any major secret. “We knew each other well before we got married and we’ve always had a close family. The kids always came first,” Cecilia said. “We discussed everything first before we made a decision and it was never about ‘I want’,” she said. John said he still felt the same way about his wife as he did when he first fell in love with her. “I love her very much,” he said. Cecilia and John Caffery. 108910 “I love everything about her.”

quarantine breach By XAVIER SMERDON ONE of the men charged with looking after a Melbourne Cup contending horse has been deported back to England after he caused the most serious breach of rules in the history of the Werribee quarantine facility. Andrew Jackson was in Werribee acting as the groom and trackwork rider for Brown Panther, one of the horses considered to be a serious chance of winning of the Melbourne Cup when he broke strict quarantine regulations. General Manager of the Werribee Racing Club, Ross Kendell, told Star that last week Mr Jackson climbed over a fence to access the quarantine facility before climbing it again to exit the facility.

Mr Kendell said it was the only serious breach in the quarantine centre’s history and Mr Jackson could have released an exotic disease into the environment. “All the other stables were very annoyed and very angry as well because they’re all doing the right thing,” he said. “As far as a breach of this magnitude, it’s definitely the first time.” Last Thursday the Werribee Racing Club also hosted the International Breakfast with the Stars in which the biggest names in Australian and international racing attended. “This event is well entrenched as a fixture of the Spring Carnival,” Mr Kendell said.

“It was the second part of that equation that caused the real issues,” Mr Kendell said. “We are very clear about the way we run the quarantine centre. “We have two golden rules, everything that goes into quarantine stays there. All clothes and gear are required to stay in the facility and people are disinfected with a three minute shower. “Unfortunately everything that went in with him (Mr Jackson) came out with him.” Mr Kendell said Mr Jackson was then apprehended and contained by security before an investigation was launched. Mr Jackson was then sent back to England for breaking the rules.

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to talk about local issues to Wyndham councillors and staff at the final Wyndham Exchange Listening Post for 2013 at the Wyndham Village Shopping centre on Saturday. Councillor Gautham Gupta said residents can come and talk about the issues affecting their street, neighbourhood and the community. “This is an opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation about Wyndham City services and local projects with myself

and other councillors and for us to seek feedback on upcoming plans and strategies,” Cr Gupta said. “We want to hear from local residents about the new Penrose Promenade Community Centre, plans for the Tarneit Library and any ideas to make Tarneit a better and even more liveable place,” he said. Cr Gupta said the last three listening posts, which were held in Werribee, Point Cook Town Centre, and Wyndham Vale, were a huge success.

“Over the year we have listened to over 750 residents about their ideas and the issues affecting their neighbourhoods and what council can do to make a difference.” The Listening Post will be held at Wyndham Village shopping centre, 380 Sayers Rd, Tarneit on Saturday 9 Novemberfrom 11am to 1pm. Carer comfort found in art By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE woman who is a carer for her daughter who has a mental illness, and also a recipient of care herself, has found comfort in art. Aurora Van Mourik is a carer for her teenage daughter, but her own bipolar disorder means that she also needs to be cared for by her husband Richard. In July this year Ms Van Mourik started holding art classes through Mind Australia for people with mental illnesses. She encouraged them to create portraits of their carers or anyone else they felt close to.

The classes were so successful that Werribee Mercy Hospital agreed to hold an exhibition of all the artworks. Ms Van Mourik said art was an important outlet for people with mental illnesses. “This project gave me the opportunity to share my skills with my peers,” Ms Van Mourik said. “Everyone supported the project and had a go even though it was challenging. “For me, being a carer is going the extra mile and not taking anything for granted. “As a carer I believe the qualities that are important are resilience, humour, confi-

dence and trust. I love capturing people’s essence and looking at them in a new way.” Mr Van Mourik said as a carer to two people, he felt patience was the key. “It’s all about energy at the end of the day,” Mr Van Mourik said. “You need the same outlook towards being a carer that you need for life. “We’re happy as a family with the challenges we have, but then every family has its challenges.” The artworks were mounted at Werribee Mercy Hospital along with a description from each artist.

SANCTUARY LAKES Football Club is kicking big goals on and off the footy oval. The club scored a $1200 grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund this month to help further develop the talents of the children by purchasing football and first aid equipment. The club is one of 625 community non-profit organisations across Australia to share in $750,000 of Telstra’s Kids Fund grants which are available through the Telstra Foundation. Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for Geelong and the Surf Coast, Duane Dalton, said the grants help boost the children’s connection to

their local community. “We are proud to be able to help local groups such as Sanctuary Lakes Football Club support the skills, talents and development of children,” Mr Dalton said. “The funds make a positive and lasting difference to children’s futures and make a genuine difference to local organisations supporting children.” Grant recipients are nominated by Telstra employees whose children or immediate family members are actively involved in not-for-profit community organisations. “It helps connect our staff to the communities where they live and work, and make a dif-

ference to those communities,” Mr Dalton said. “We are proud to be connected with the Sanctuary Lakes Football Club and continue to look for opportunities to grow our local engagement,” he said. Telstra Foundation Chair Geoff Booth said the grant would make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of children. “Over the past 11 years, thousands of groups across Australia have benefited from Telstra’s Kids Fund grants, including schools, art and culture groups, sport and recreational clubs, disability services and environmental organisations,” Mr Booth said.

Westgrove Primary School Music teacher Lindsay Paterson and the choir students sang at the Victorian Arts Centre last week as part of the Music: Count Us In event. 109101 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI

STUDENTS from Westgrove Primary School experienced a choir performance like no other last week when they sang together with over half a million other students across Australia. The Music: Count Us In, which was held last Thursday, aimed to promote the importance of music education and participation to schools and the community. Over 660,000 students from across Australia sang the same song at the same time. The song “Keep On” was cowritten by musician and television personality John Foreman.

Winner of The Voice singing show Harrison Craig also joined the performance as the main singer. Music teacher at Westgrove Primary School Lindsay Paterson said the students were really looking forward to the day. “It’s a pretty big deal and the students were very excited,” Mr Paterson said. Mr Paterson said when students learnt about the enormity of the event they reacted with a big “wow”. “It’s the excitement of doing something that’s bigger than just your own school,” Mr Paterson said. Mr Paterson said it was a re-

warding experience for the children who got to showcase their talents as part of a live stream. Four schools across Victoria, including Westgrove students, were streamed live to the world as part of the event. “I think it’s a really good reward for the kids who put in a lot of work and they are out there and having a good time,” Mr Paterson said. “They give up a lunch time every week to practice, which is really commendable as well,” he said. Craft festival here to stay 1100756-CB45-13

By YASEMIN TALAT

WYNDHAM’S annual handmade craft fair is here to stay. The annual Werribee Craft Festival Handmade Fair was on the brink of cancellation earlier this month due to renovations at the festival’s usual venue. But a replacement venue was found and the community will continue to enjoy the festival which is also celebrating its 35th birthday. Chairperson of the Werribee Craft Festival Committee Betty Parker said the event was an important part of the community and had been for a long time. “It’s a very good family day out,” Ms Parker said. “The younger ones some-

times might not be into crafty things but this sort of thing gives them an idea of things they can be making if they wanted to,” she said. The festival is well-known for the high quality handmade items created by locals and others which be sold across 65 stalls. From greeting cards to toys and home décor to Christmas goodies and jewellery, everything at the festival will be handmade. “Everybody likes to buy something handmade and everything is handmade from the stall holder themselves,” Ms Parker said. “We have a variety of stallholders that come from all over

Victoria,” she said. “We picked the best of everything, it’s always quality,” she said. Ms Parker said the committee assessed products to ensure quality was always the highest. Children can also enjoy craft activities like making their own plaster painting and creating their own Christmas decorations and a visit from Chancie the Clown. The free event can be enjoyed by everyone this Sunday 10 November from 9am-5pm at the Wyndham City Civic Centre. For more information visit werribeecraftfestival.tripod. com

Keane to ride and conquer cancer Alcohol study has a surprise By NICOLE VALICEK

KEANE Collier recently completed an epic 200 kilometres cycling event, but he said the challenge of the ride was nothing compared to the cause it was helping. The Seaholme resident is fresh from participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer fund-raising event. The Melbourne ride stretched from Albert Park to Hastings and benefits the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The first time competitor said he was inspired to do the ride after a close family member of his fiancée was diagnosed with cancer around this time last year. “The fundraising and the awareness they get out of that weekend is second to none,” Keane said. Keane said the family member, who finished chemotherapy and radiation earlier this year, went through the Peter MacCallum centre for treatment and care. “A lot of people I’ve known went through the private system, Peter MacCallum is the only public system in Australia dedicated to cancer, it touched a bit closer to home.” Keane said he hadn’t done anything like the ride before but wanted to help. “I felt like a great sense of achievement to be able to finish it and to raise money.” “What I went through on the bike ride was nowhere near what anybody has to go through with cancer.” Keane said it was difficult to raise funds for the event, but was grateful for the local businesses who donated and all those who supported him in the community. He exceeded all expectations and raised almost $4500.

Drinking at licensed venues was more common in inner Melbourne and drinking at private parties was more frequently reported by young people in growth areas. CEO of VicHealth, who fund Turning Point, Jerril Rechter, said the research showed that many young peoples’ drinking habits may be formed at home, before graduating to pubs, clubs and bars. “Almost three-quarters of young people drink alcohol at levels that puts them at short term risk of injury, so more work needs to be done to reduce the widespread acceptability of drinking to excess,” Ms Rechter said. “Wherever they live, young people need to know that getting drunk doesn’t have to be part and parcel with socialising. The reality is that today’s binge drinking teens are on track to become tomorrow’s heavy drinking 30-somethings, who then have a much higher chance of suffering from disease in middle age.”

By XAVIER SMERDON A NEW study about the attitudes of young people from growth areas towards alcohol has provided some surprising results. Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre found that more young people from areas including Wyndham thought that drinking alcohol was “disgusting” and “wrong” than inner Melbourne residents. The study revealed that 76 per cent of young people in inner Melbourne agreed that having a drink was one of the pleasures of life, compared to just 66 per cent in outer Melbourne and 68 per cent of young people in growth areas agreed that a drunk person is a disgusting sight compared to 64 per cent in inner Melbourne. It also found that the preferred drink for young people aged 16-24 years in inner Melbourne was regular strength beer, with pre-mixed spirits preferred in growth areas.

NINETY per cent of Wyndham’s 1200 indigenous families are suffering some form of drug abuse, domestic violence or family justice issues, according to Wyndham’s only indigenous support group. CEO of The Gathering Place, Colleen Marion, told Star that a lack of funding from State and Federal governments meant that many families were struggling in silence. Two days every week The Gathering Place’s Werribee office has a doctor and a councillor available to meet with indigenous residents. More than 100 people flock through their doors in those two days alone. “I think that government ignores the West, and especially

Wyndham when it comes to these issues, Ms Marion said. “Three years ago we identified that there were huge needs here in Wyndham. “We have lots of issues around child protection and we’re currently dealing with 150 children from about 60 houses. Ms Marion said the methamphetamine, or “ice, epidemic also contributed to high levels of domestic violence and suicide. “We have young people coming through the door every week who are suicidal, Ms Marion said. “We have the same issues here in Wyndham as every other area, but we don’t attract the dollars. But it is not all doom and

gloom. The Gathering Place is also running play groups, free Koori swimming classes and even adult education courses. Ms Marion said one of the group’s biggest success stories came last year when a group of four young girls were stolen from their mother’s house in Werribee by their father and physically and sexually abused. A group of workers from The Gathering Place worked to have them returned to their mother and are now helping with an ongoing court case against the father. They have also helped the girls get back to school after they missed an entire year during the ordeal. For more information on The Gathering Place visit www. gatheringplace.com.au or call 8742 3144.

THERE is no longer any need to go through a private dentist to get dentures. Cernus Dental Denture Clinic and Laboratories offers dentures direct to the public. It is a denture clinic and also has a full service laboratory where dentures are made to suit each patient’s specific needs. Patients can also see the experienced staff for cosmetic dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, half hour express repairs appointment needed, relines, repairs, flexible cosmetic dentures, metal frame dentures, sports professionally custom fitted mouth guards, dental laboratory on site, maintenance on dentures every 12 months. Dental prosthesist Attila Cernus says Cernus offers something that has rarely been seen anywhere else. “We have introduced into the denture community products never offered with our cosmetic range. “We are also committed to sponsoring local football clubs with mouthguards and are also committed to the local nursing homes visiting them with education in care of oral hygiene.” The bright purple clinic is easily found on Heaths Rd and features plenty of discrete off street parking with disabled access. Attila is a dental prosthesist with more than 15 years of experience in the denture industry. Radana Cernus is a highly skilled dental ceramist and also has more than 15 years of experience in producing a more natural looking touch to dentures, individual teeth, crown and bridges, ceramic work and in implant over-dentures. Both Attila and Radana are the heart and soul of Cernus Dental Denture Clinic and Laboratories as it is a family owned business with personalized professional treatment given to each individual patient. Victorian Dentures Scheme vouchers are accepted with no waiting list. TRICHOLOGY Technology specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp problems. Services include hair loss, alopecia, dandruff, psoriasis, dermatitis, hair breakage, dry or oily hair and itchy or scaly scalps. There are a range of products available at the clinic including herbal remedies, amino acids, minerals, specialist shampoos, conditioners and treatments as well as topical lotions and creams. Business owner Pam Jameson-Smith ran a hairdressing business for many years and came across many clients with hair and scalp problems. “I referred clients to a trichologist for treatment and became interested in pursuing a career in the field.” The training involved gaining experience working in a hair loss studio and attending many overseas conferences. “I now specialise in hair loss, particularly women’s hair loss. “Women’s hair loss is a delicate subject in which they feel comfortable discussing their issues and problems with me. “I can also provide extra knowledge due to my hairdressing background of 30 years,” Pam said. Digital imaging technology is used in the consultation to show and record the current state and progress of the condition and treatment. Clients will be able to see the progress through a series of before and after photos.

With Dr Kristi of Hoppers Crossing Vet Clinic and Hospital

Gender: Female

Life has been a little rough, so I’m ready for a new beginning where I can really build my conidence. If you’re patient with me, in time I’ll reward you with years of affection. I really enjoy being around people, so I would love to spend lots of time inside with you. My new owners will need to have a consult with our behaviour team to discuss my issues with handling. I don’t need a huge amount of grooming, but I’d enjoy a quick brush every few days. I would like to live in a mature family, as kids can be a bit overwhelming for me.

This is Gypsy the Maltese terrier cross who was treated in our hospital for gastroenteritis after eating cooked bones.

Dealing with your dog’s dodgy tummy GASTROENTERITIS is commonly seen in puppies and adult dogs with vomiting and/or diarrhoea being the typical signs. A very common cause of gastroenteritis is dietary indiscretion. This includes eating spoilt leftovers, garbage or high fat food. Other causes include viruses, infections and parasites or possibly swallowing a foreign object. If the gastroenteritis is accompanied by a loss of appetite, lethargy or pain then a serious underlying disorder may be present and urgent veterinary attention should be sought. Blood in the faeces or vomit is also a cause for concern especially

for parvovirus in a young puppy. For a bright and happy dog with gastroenteritis we usually withhold all food for 24 hours but still give water. Then a bland diet, such as boiled chicken and white rice, is fed for two to three days. We check that the pet’s parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. If signs persist for more than a few days the pet may become dehydrated. Blood tests and X-rays may be required in some cases as well as medical treatment with fluids, antibiotics and prescription diets. The good news is that most dogs with gastroenteritis will respond well to the correct treatment.

Dogs in hot cars are in danger THERE has been an increasing number of reports of dogs being left in cars by their owners for varying lengths of time. This is an extremely dangerous practice because the temperature in cars can rise dramatically even on mild days. Owners are reminded to never leave their dog unattended in a car. Dogs die very quickly from heat stress in these situations. The death would be slow and agonising for the helpless dog. Anyone who sees a dog left in a car unattended should take the following steps: 1. Attempt to locate the driver of the car and explain that the dog is in great danger even if left for only a few minutes;

2. If the dog is in distress, call triple-zero and ask for police to attend, explain the situation and police will make every effort to respond quickly; 3. Call the RSPCA on 9244 2237, they may not be able to respond as quickly as the police but inspectors will make the job a priority and investigate any possible offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Tests conducted by Melbourne’s Metropolitan Ambulance Service on a 29 degree day with the car’s air conditioning having cooled the interior to a comfortable 20 degrees showed it took just 10 minutes for the temperature to more than double to 44 degrees.

shorts Tigers tough on top Horses for courses By LIAM TWOMEY

WERRIBEE has continued its winning way through the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season, smashing Roxburgh Park/Broadmeadows last week. The Tigers won the toss and elected to bat in the perfect conditions, and the opening combination of brothers Shaun and Matthew Dean had no trouble getting the scoreboard moving. The pair added 21 before Shaun was caught for 15. That brought arguably the competition’s best batsman to the crease, Tim O’Brien. After hitting 122 in his last innings, O’Brien was again in control at the crease and combined with Dean for a 69-run stand. However, with the score at 1/90, Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows launched its fightback. The bowlers were able to remove Dean (39), O’Brien (49), Heath Pritchard (6), Michael Freeman (0) and Adam Alifraco (9) as Werribee lost 5/33. With the score at 6/123, the Tigers’ tail was able to wag with Matthew Burton and Jake Purton scoring some valuable lower order runs. Coming in at number 10, Matthew Thomson also hit 13 to lift the score to 9/205 at the end of 45 overs. Mitchell Johnstone was the pick of the bowlers for Roxburgh Park/Broadmeadows taking 3/39. Werribee was hunting early wickets and that is exactly what it got from opening bowlers Thomson and Burton. The pair ripped through the top order and left the batting side reeling at 7/73. It was only Mitchell Streiff who looked at home at the crease with his impressive 81 coming off just 91 balls. But he couldn’t get enough help from his teammates and when Streiff was run out, any hope of an unlikely win walked back to the dressing room with him. Werribee eventually dismissed Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows for 136 in the 34th over. The result has the Tigers on top of the VSDCA first grade ladder after three rounds with the club yet to lose a game. When round four kicks off this weekend, they will take on the 13th placed and winless Endeavour Hills. In other VSDCA results, Yarraville defeated Williamstown and Altona came out on top against Sunshine.

DERBY Day at Flemington saw horses from the Werribee quarantine facility again hitting top form on the track. The Andrew Balding trained Side Glance crossed the line first in the Group One Longines Mackinnon Stakes. That was just the start of the good results though with the Ed Walker trained Ruscello taking out first place in the group three Lexus Stakes. The victory has qualified Ruscello for the Melbourne Cup. In total, 11 horses based at the Werribee quarantine facility will be competing in the Melbourne Cup. GRAND United is on top of the ladder in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A1 Turf competition after scoring an impressive win over Williamstown Congs on Saturday. United sent Congs in to bat at Parsons Reserve and it proved to be a masterstroke by skipper Glenn Sullivan, as the visitors stumbled to finish their 40-over dig all out for 113. Led by opener Dillon Hinge (42), Grand United cruised home in its chase, reaching 4/120 by the end of the 27th over. In other A1 Turf results, West Newport got its first win of the summer, taking care of St Johns’ 112 in 24 overs, finishing 2/114. Meanwhile Gellibrand is third on the table after getting the job done against the Williamstown Colts on Saturday. David Croft scored 80 to help Gellibrand to 6/168 - a total the Colts could not match, falling 81 runs short. Williamstown Imperials (4/196) was also a winner over Bellbridge (7/150) in round four action.

Bulldogs’ bats have a blast By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater is in a strong position after day one of its Premier Cricket clash with Prahran on the weekend. After being sent in to bat by the home team, Bulldogs’ openers Dean Russ and Anthony Barton wasted no time making themselves at home in the middle. The pair added a brilliant 170 for the first wicket with Russ blasting 70 off 102 balls while Barton fell just short of his century and was out for 91. However, Footscray’s middle order wasn’t able to capitalise on the start as Prahran launched a fight back with the ball. Both Russ and Barton were dismissed without a run being added to the tally and in the blink of an eye, Travis Dean, Dylan Kight and Michael Hill were also back in the pavilion. Luckily for Footscray, Sunam Gautam was able to steady the ship

with a hard-fought 52 while Guy Walker and Hamish Winter-Irving worked hard at the crease. The Bulldogs’ innings eventually came to a close in the 84th over with the score at 308. For Prahran, James Miller was the pick of the bowlers and finished with figures of 4/74 while Bryce McGain took 3/85. The early finish to the innings gave Footscray two overs to bowl and the results were immediate when Jake Haberfield removed Nicholas Morrey for a duck to have Prahran reeling at 1/0. The True Blues will resume their innings at 1/6 on Saturday. It was a similar story for Footscray in the second XI, with the Bulldogs seemingly cruising at 5/199 on day one of their clash, also against Prahran. But a late collapse was again on the cards, this time dismissing the club for 226. In reply, Prahran is 0/17.

BLUE skies, mild temperatures and a slight breeze made for perfect racing conditions for the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing, with A Grade’s Simon Hurn making it two wins in a row. Hurn just held out St Kilda rider Richard Braic and Brett Hickford in the sprint. The Williamstown resident thought that there were quite a few riders in B who should have joined in on A Grade, with low numbers reducing the quality of A’s racing. On the bell lap 39-year-old Hurn ensured he was not going to be overrun. “I made sure I was out the front and had a small gap turning onto the straight, and then worked to maintain the gap.” Hurn is hoping to continue his winning streak and is hoping for a hat-trick on his next outing. The B Grade race was dominated by the in-form Damien Harris powering away at the front, as well as quite a few attacks and breakaways from the likes of Leigh Kelly, Danny Bellis, and Josh Toohey. But the bunch was willing to chase and worked well to bring back all breaks. The bunch sprint saw an improving Richard Conejo take the early kick, the 40-year-old said he was enjoying improving after a difficult year.“ I went early and tried to pick which wheel to follow,” he said.“ I saw a couple of guys ease up on the straight so I went to the right and just kept pushing - I wasn’t concerned about anyone behind and didn’t know how close anyone was.” Point Cook resident Conejo was a bike length clear of second placed Travis Small who held off a fast finishing Mark Micallef and Ben Ryan. Conejo has been racing for five seasons, but has struggled with form due to recurring tonsillitis, and feels things are turning around. In other results, Andrew Schieseck won C Grade while Brett Manning took out D Grade.

Jet forms up for selection By ADEM SARICAOGLU WESTERN Jets best-and-fairest winner David Iaccarino is ready for senior footy. And after a year of dealing with persistent shoulder issues and equally stifling opponents, you’d expect him to be. The 18-year-old Williamstown product had a year worth savouring in the TAC Cup, finding plenty of the footy on a weekly basis and even managing to penetrate on the scoreboard with 16 goals. His form also warranted a VFL debut with Williamstown, in which he proved just how damaging a senior player he’ll turn out to be with two goals and 23 disposals against Bendigo. “Playing with Willy this year really made me excited about next year,” Iaccarino said. “I feel like I can fit the mould pretty good, so I’m definitely excited about senior footy and I want to play at the best level I can play at.” Jets coach Torin Baker knows just how well the Barry Round Medallist can stamp his authority on a game of footy, and has been staunch in his belief Iaccarino developed into one of the TAC Cup’s better midfielders throughout his stellar season in blue and gold. “He had some more attention due to that,” Baker explained. “But he was still able to find a way to be able to really impact games and that’s just due to the fact that he can win his own ball and he’s really good at winning some uncontested ball as well.” Iaccarino was cleared to play after injuring his troublesome shoulder early in the season and as a result was hampered in certain areas of his game. That the talented midfielder was still able to produce what he did, despite being forced to alter his tackling technique and on several occasions

Draft Watch David Iaccarino DOB: 20/12/1994 Junior club: Williamstown Position: Midfielder 2013 Average Disposals: 24.56 (18 games) Torin Baker says: “In the end, a lot of it comes down to performance and as far as we go, David’s been one of our absolute very best. He’s just shown that he can really dominate TAC Cup footy.”

David Iaccarino gathered 28 disposals and kicked a goal against Dandenong in round five of the TAC Cup this season. 97935 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT playing through the pain of numerous partial dislocations, impressed Baker even more. “When any player can play under duress and still perform it shows that they’re a player that’s got some real character about them,” Baker noted.

“The fact he was able to cope with that says a lot about him.” Late last month Iaccarino underwent the shoulder re-construction he’d been slated for earlier in the year and is currently in the middle of rehab, but he is expecting to be ready to play a big part in 2014, wherever he ends up.

Despite missing out on Vic Metro selection and combine invitations, Iaccarino is comfortable with letting his formidable body of recent on-field work speak for itself during the upcoming AFL draft period. “I don’t read too much into it,” he said.

State slot set for young gun in Hobart FOOTSCRAY Edgewater younggun Guy Walker has been selected in the Victorian under-19 cricket side. Walker will pull on the Big V for the national championships, which will be played in Hobart at the start of December. The teenager has enjoyed a solid start to the Premier Cricket season for Footscray with a top score of 35 coming against Casey-South Melbourne in round four. He has also taken two wickets while bowling at a good economy rate. Walker will be joined by some of the best young cricketers from around Australia for the championships. Victorian academy coach Jarrad Loughman is excited about the prospects of his side. “We have a good mix of top and bottom age,” Loughman said. “The bottom agers have the experience from last year of winning the championships in Hobart, where we are going to be playing, so I think that’s a big thing.” The team consists of six top-age players and seven bottom age, of which all but one were part of last season’s title-winning Victorian under-17 squad. Loughman lauded the depth in the state, saying selection was very difficult this season.

ration for the national championships in January. Footscray Edgewater assistant coach Duncan Harrison will be the team’s head coach.

“Being a 19-year-old (in December), I knew it was going to be hard to make those sorts of things, so I wasn’t too worried about that at all. “If I’m good enough, I’ll get picked. So it doesn’t really fuss me too much.”

Centurions in search for a ton of runs WERRIBEE Centrals needs another 104 runs to score its first victory of the summer against St Francis De Sales this weekend. The Centurions, who last summer went undefeated to claim the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 title, have not yet been victorious as part of the North A1 division this season. On Saturday the visiting St Francis outfit chose to bat first on Centrals’ home deck at Galvin Park and lasted for 65 overs before losing all 10 wickets. The visitors were bowled for 130, with Justin Davies leading the way with the ball for the Centurions with figures of 4/19 and five maidens from his 13 overs in the middle. Aaron Edrich (2/28) and Sam Crea (2/40) also proved handy for Centrals, while Philip Crea (1/24) claimed the only other Centurions wicket for the day. Given 15 overs to bat through for the remainder of the opening day’s play, the Centurions stumbled to finish 2/27 by stumps. Opening batsmen Blair Hemmingson (1) and Chris Duffin (2) both fell cheaply to leave their side stranded early in the chase, but after Nicholas Sardi and Azif Mohamed steadied the ship late in the day, the innings looks to be in good hands. This Saturday, Sardi will return to the crease unbeaten on 15, while Mohamed will join him hoping to add to his eight.

Werribee narrowly went down to local rival Williamstown on Sunday. 90661

Giants fall to the Wolves By ADEM SARICAOGLU

THE conditions may not have been all that conducive for quality baseball, but the scoreboard at Greenwich Reserve told a different story on Sunday. It was there where the Werribee Giants faced local Division Two rival Williamstown in round five of the Summer League baseball season, and where the two produced a 25-run shootout. The tone for the day was set in the first inning after the Giants established a 3-1 buffer.

By the end of the third Werribee led 5-1, but from there Division Two’s reigning premier took control. Williamstown import Russell Moldenhauer stamped his considerable authority on the game and almost single-handedly turned it in the Wolves’ favour. A Moldenhauer home run and a two-run double from David Asp snatched the lead from Werribee in the ninth, thus handing the Giants their second loss from four starts, 13-12.

Werribee coach Phil Balzer was left ruing a messy defensive effort from his side after the game. “We hit pretty well but all in all - it was only an average game in terms of skills,” Balzer said. “We made too many mistakes in the field, didn’t convert opportunities at the plate and we were just a little bit down on what I expect.” However it was not only defence that cost the Giants dearly on Sunday, as they failed to convert numerous

scoring opportunities throughout the day. “We had different opportunities and didn’t convert, and half of those were with bases loaded and I think we only scored two or three runs out of them,” Balzer said. “We didn’t take those opportunities and we made a few errors in the field, which we haven’t made in the last few weeks, so that cost us as well.” The Giants moved to 2-2 and have started the summer in promising fash-

ion, and despite Sunday’s setback, Balzer is firm in his belief his side is a genuine Division Two finals contender. “We should’ve won today,” Balzer said. “We had more run-scoring opportunities than Williamstown had, and so when you look at that, we should’ve won. “The guys know that and we spoke about that after the game, so I think we’re looking pretty good.” Werribee will host St Kilda this Sunday.

Cats desperately in search of life-line Fahey signs with Seagulls

By ADEM SARICAOGLU HOPPERS Crossing looks to be in peril against Yarraville Club in the Senior Division of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association. The 1-1 Cats were handed the ball after losing the toss at Yarraville Club’s Walker Oval and ended up having a day they’d rather forget. The Clubbers, who remain winless so far this season, ran riot with the bat to post a whopping 6/383 in their 80-over dig. Brilliantly led by opening batsman Andrew Cullen (160), Aaron Mato (102) and Adam Contessa (52), Yarraville Club made a mockery of a Hoppers Crossing bowling attack that struggled to get going. Captain-coach Darrel Brown started the day promisingly enough with the early dismissal of Jake Armistead for a duck but the Clubbers, with Cullen and Anthony Cristofaro at the crease, added 74 runs to the total for the next wicket. However the eventual dismissal, courtesy of Travis Waring, only brought Mato to the crease, who, combined with Cullen, produced what could well prove to be a match-winning 223-run partnership. Waring was finally able to break Hoppers Crossing’s drought when he got through the defences of Mato, but from there another 83 runs were added to Yarraville Club’s final total. Tawalampolage Darshanapriya claimed two wickets of his own for the Cats and also took a catch to remove Cristofaro for 28. Hoppers Crossing needs 384 for victory this Saturday.

WILLIAMSTOWN has continued its busy offseason, adding key defender David Fahey to its playing stocks. Fahey joins the Seagulls from the Essendon Football Club having spent the past year with the Bombers’ VFL side and the previous three seasons with Coburg. After playing for the Calder Cannons as a junior, Fahey has played 18 senior VFL games and was also a member of Coburg’s 2012 premiership winning development side. With Essendon fielding a large contingent of AFL players each week he struggled for senior opportunities, playing only four senior games but was one of the most dominant defenders playing for Aberfeldie in the Essendon District Football League. Fahey was recognised for his strong season by being named full back in the EDFL Team of the Year. Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said that Fahey was another important piece in the Seagulls’ recruiting puzzle. “He’s going to be very important for us down back,” he said. “Fahey’s a player we’ve always rated when watching him over the past few years and we’re delighted to bring him across. We know he can perform a real lock down role down back, as well as being able to play as a third tall so he’s going to be a key part of our make up next year. “Dave’s probably been a victim of alignments over the past few years so he is pretty excited about the opportunities with the club going standalone in 2014.”

By LIAM TWOMEY THEY may be the new kids on the block, but that hasn’t stopped members of Wyndham Track and Field from having a big impact on the Victorian athletics scene. The club has enjoyed great numbers since launching earlier this year, with its focus on supporting culturally diverse groups in the community. Just a few weeks into the new season, committee member Peter Gavaghan said they had been pleasantly surprised with the support for

the new club. “We have become a victim of our own success,” he said. “We didn’t anticipate having the numbers that we have got. As far as competition is concerned we have about 15 or 16 but we have also got a lot of athletes who are in training who won’t be able to compete until later in the season. “We have advanced at a more rapid rate than we had dreamed of. We are certainly surprised.” While training has been going on for a few months, it hasn’t taken

the club long to produce some head turning performances on the track. Gavaghan highlighted the efforts of rising star Chris Mitrevski who has been outstanding in the early stages of the season. “He is 18 so he has been doing serious school but he has been down there training a lot. In the 100 metres on Saturday he did 11.06 which was the second fastest, probably in the state,” Gavaghan said. “He also did 6.90m in the long jump. His goal for the season was seven metres. He then went down

AFL boost for Deer Park WHILE it might be cricket season, footy news seems to be what everyone is still talking about and everyone was buzzing with the news that dual Hawthorn premiership player Brent Guerra will join his brother Luke at Deer Park in the WRFL next year. It is a boost for the reigning premiers, who will also have James Condos back, as well as a few of their Division 2 Premiership team from 2011. One big surprise for me is the news that David Mitchell is putting the boots back on for North Footscray in Division 2, under new coaches Shaun Borlase and Matty Walsh. The three ex Hoppers Crossing favourites will certainly give the Devils a much needed boost. I HAVE mentioned the new WRFL club the Tarneit Tigers and the return to the WRFL of Werribee Districts, to be coached by Wade Chapman, but there is another new club launching in Westbourne Grammarians FC, which is rising from the ashes of the Old Westbourne AFC. The new club will remain at the Westbourne School and has appointed Roger Hand as Senior Coach with Justin Johns returning from Clunes as a playing assistant coach. Fab Gatti will be looking after the under 19s and the club will be playing in Division 4. Anyone interested in playing, or being involved should contact the club westbournegrammarians@gmail.com I do wonder where all these new clubs are going to get players from, but I guess we will have to wait and see. POINT Cook Football Club will be fielding its first ever girls team in 2014, and has appointed Belinda McErvale as inaugural coach. Belinda is well known in the area in her job as a teacher at Carranbach College. She has played for Melbourne Uni in the Women’s Football League for over 10 years with more than 150 games under her belt. Her experience and enthusiasm should make for a great team atmosphere. Anyone interested in playing or being involved should contact Mark King 0447 156 108 or markk4@bigpond.com.au AFTER my experiences this year with the Auskick program, which I absolutely loved, the importance of junior coaching was really brought home to me. It is great to see most sports now with their own version of Auskick, with the aim of teaching kids the basic skills of the sport and the importance of teamwork and physical activity. The hole in the system now, is when kids hit their teens and other activities take them away from sport. For me, I remember not playing any sport from the age of 17 to about 28, because of work commitments. That is happening younger these days as kids have parttime jobs. All sports have to look at the 12 to 16 year olds and come up with a way to keep them involved, because that is where the drop off is happening. Overall participation figures are up in many sports, but I think there are gender and age factors, that have resulted in what I would term as ‘creative accounting’. Got any ideas? LITTLE River Cicket Club is having a Past Players and Officials Function on Saturday 30 November from 2pm, at its home ground, Little River Reserve. The Firsts will be playing Meredith and there will be raffles, a happy hour and plenty going on. Roadstar Isuzu takes MU-X to the max THE Isuzu D-Max ute will soon have a closely-aligned SUV sibling. The Japanese truck brand, which also imports utes to Australia through a separate distributor, is set to unveil a seven-seat SUV variant currently referred to in-house as the MU-X. The MU-X has already received Australian design approval. Documents indicate the new vehicle will be offered in 2WD and 4WD guises. Reports suggest that SUV is due to be unveiled in Thailand this month, with an Australian release slated for December. Isuzu has offered a sevenseat SUV in Thailand since 2004, called the MU-7, but it has never been sold in Australia. It’s believed the MU-X will sport a front end resembling the new D-Max ute design, which launched in Australia last June. The Isuzu will join a growing crop of rugged SUVs based on dual-cab utes, including the Holden Colorado, Nissan Pathfinder and Mitsubishi Challenger. Ford Australia is also work-

ing on an SUV variant based on the locally-engineered Ranger ute, called the Everest. The Australian-spec DMax is currently powered by a 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine producing 130kW and 380Nm. However, a European version is also available with a 2.5-litre turbo diesel variant which meets strict Euro 5 diesel emission standards that will apply to all Australian vehicles from 2016. The Isuzu brand has played its hand in the Australian SUV market previously as the donor designer of the Holden Jackaroo and Frontera vehicles. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Kia, Isuzu Ute at 22 Morris Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, or call 9974 3799 for more information. Alternatively, visit Western Kia, Isuzu Ute at 51-53 Westwood Drive, Ravenhall, open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm, or call 8390 5165 to learn more. Isuzu Mu-X is set to hit Australian shores in December.

The hot little Kia Pro_cee’d hatch.

Pro_cee’d takes a look forward THIS hot hatch might finally change people’s perceptions about Korean cars once and for all. Kia Pro_cee’d GT was designed by a Frenchman, engineered in Germany and is made in Slovakia which, incidentally, produces more cars per capita than any other country. All this possibly explains why it’s the most un-Korean Korean car to date. There are three models in the Kia GT range in Europe starting at the equivalent of $32,990 and stretching to $42,990. Australia will likely get two models when it goes on sale in March 2014. The local starting price is yet to be finalised but bank on

it being close to or less than $30,000, undercutting the enemy from within, the Veloster Turbo coupe from sister company Hyundai. Nice touches include the “ice-cube” style daytime running lights above the sleek fog lights, the wide blacked-out grille and the red VW Golf GTI-like flash across the front bumper. The faux-LED rings in the tail-lights look cool, as do the black accented 18-inch alloys, among the more original wheel designs of late. Inside, the Recaro seats are super comfortable and there is ample room for storage in the glovebox, centre console and door pockets.

i30 SR & Accent SR in stock now Sporty X-Trail “test drive now” is muscling up The muscular Nissan X-Trail will exceed your expectations.

NOW the family can see everything from the comfort of the all new Nissan X-Trail in 2WD, 4WD petrol plus the 4WD diesel models which are packed with innovative features. Muscular, modern and packed with technology, the new Nissan X-Trail has made its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Building on Nissan’s respected 4x4 heritage but adding world-leading crossover knowhow, the new X-Trail re-defines the compact SUV segment. At the same time as enhancing its predecessor’s goanywhere credibility, the new X-Trail takes inspiration from Nissan’s market-leading crossovers - Qashqai, Juke and Murano - to create the ultimate, all weather, highly capable, modern family vehicle. The design brief behind new X-Trail was to blend the sleek and stylish lines of a modern crossover with the robust appeal of a typical SUV.

In place of the rugged, squared off lines of the previous generation, new X-Trail has a premium and dynamic appearance. Sculptured muscular lines create a distinctive silhouette framed by elegant curves and high wheel arches and feature a number of Nissan signature cues such as the ‘boomerang’ rear lights, structured headlights with LED daytime running lamps and the characteristic D-pillar shape. LED headlights - for both high and low beams - are standard on high grade models while 19-inch alloy wheels also give new X-Trail an imposing look. Practical touches include rear side doors that open to almost 80 degrees - far wider than normal - to allow not just easy access but also to ease the loading and unloading of a child’s safety seat. It’s pure driving pleasure By EWAN KENNEDY BMW Z4 has one of the purest body shapes on the road whether it’s used as a closed coupe, or a top-down roadster in which to appreciate the joys of cruising in Australia. It has a very long bonnet, a short tail and you sit all the way back in the cabin. We love the shape and have just enjoyed a great week in our home territory on the Gold Coast. Changes to the body shape of the BMW Z4 in this midlife makeover are minimal. Daytime running lights sit in rings around all four headlights, there are metal arches over the headlights and the chrome around the front blinkers has been enlarged. Reshaping of the side air extractors are part of the picture and new paint colours are on offer. Inside the cabin a bolder effect has been obtained by using piano-black in several locations, there are also mild revisions in style. Upgrades for the 2014 model year include the installation of the BMW Professional satellite navigation system in all models. BMW Australia is continuing its strategy of bundling items that had proven popular as individual features into what it calls ‘Lines’. The Design Pure Balance Line has sport seats, wood trim and leather trim. The M Sport Package has 18-inch alloys, sports seats, aluminium and carbon fibre interior trim, a leather steering wheel, M sport suspension, and an aerodynamics package.

Model range

Z4 sDrive 20i 2.0-litre two-door convertible: $79,900 (manual or automatic); Z4 sDrive 28i 2.0-litre two-door convertible: $89,900 (manual or automatic); Z4 sDrive 35is 3.0-litre two-door convertible: $119,545 (DSG automatic).

The pure roadster shape of the latest BMW Z4 works well with the top up - or down. 109221 BMW’s Z4 Design Pure Traction Line is available across the range. It features sports seats, Alcantara/ leather upholstery, interior trim finishers in ‘metal weave’ design and an individual roof-liner in Anthracite trim. Engines are all turbocharged-petrol units as BMW Australia couldn’t see there being a market for turbo-diesel units on our market. There’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder in two stages of tune, giving either 135 kW or 180 kW, and a 3.0-litre straight-

six with 250 kW. During our road testing at the new Z4’s launch in far north Queensland a couple of months back we fell in love with the 180 kW four-cylinder engine that sits behind an all-new eight speed automatic. It provides almost as much performance as the six-cylinder and its lighter weight adds to the already good agility of the Z4 when cornering hard. Our week’s retest on the Gold Coast in day-to-day driving confirmed that

this is our powertrain of choice. The six-cylinder engine in the BMW Z4 has a sports unit - a dualclutch seven-speed automatic. You wouldn’t expect a high-performance roadster with a 180 kilowatt engine to have fuel consumption as low as 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres, but that’s the number we had during the stages of testing at 110 to 120 on motorways. That’s amazing efficiency and shows why BMW continues to sit at, or near the top, when global ‘en-

gine of the year‘ awards are handed out. In day-to-day driving in the suburbs and when pushing hard in the country the consumption was generally in the eight to 10 litres per 100km range, which is still impressive in a sports machine like this. It’s no surprise that the BMW Z4 continues to provide excitement. It has near-perfect chassis balance, provides huge levels of grip in corners and answers virtually instantly to steering and throttle inputs from the driver. Anyone who doesn’t come away from a drive in a Z4 on challenging roads with a big smile on their face hasn’t been trying hard enough. There’s a lot of tyre noise on coarse-chip bitumen as found on many Australian roads, at times conversation can be difficult even when the roof is closed. Boot space is quite limited when the roof is folded down and life is further complicated by the fact the opening is small. Prices of the BMW Z4 are virtually unchanged from the superseded model and represent considerable savings when the added equipment is factored in. The sheer joy of driving continues to be a factor in all BMWs and nowhere is this felt more than in this fun roadster.
