cern regarding residential development near MHF’s like its Point Gellibrand tank farm that supplies half of Victoria’s fuel. Hundreds of new dwellings are currently planned on the Port Phillip Woollen Mill development site that is situated near the tank farm. “In the case of the woollen mills development in Williamstown, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the Napthine Government will do whatever it takes to ensure a high rise, high density monstrosity is built at that site,” Mr Noonan said. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said although the inquiry was not supported in the Legislative Council, the council will continue to advocate on the “important issue”. “We have had assurances from the minister during a recent delegation that the State Government would continue to consider ways to give greater clarity between industry and residential issues.” “The council is keen to work with the State Government to ensure that there is a review of planning controls and risk around MHFs.” The council will make a formal submission to the government’s Plan Melbourne paper and will vote on its position at a council meeting on Tuesday 26 November. Star contacted the Planning Minister Matthew Guy, but he did not respond before deadline.

THERE will be no inquiry into the development around major hazard facilities after it was knocked back in State Parliament last week. Member for Williamstown, Wade Noonan, backed moves by State Labor in September to initiate a Parliamentary Inquiry. The inquiry would have examined the appropriateness of approving new residential developments within close proximity to major hazard facilities. “The Liberals have ignored both the evidence and substantial community support for the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry to consider safe buffer distances around major hazard facilities,” Mr Noonan told Star after the decision last Thursday. Hobsons Bay is home to eight of the state’s 45 major hazard facilities (MHFs) which are all in close proximity to residential areas. “It saddens me to say, but Denis Napthine has clearly demonstrated that he is willing to play politics with community safety - and that’s a very dangerous thing to do,” Mr Noonan said. Hobsons Bay City Council strongly supported the inquiry and asked for an urgent risk assessment. “There is no clear State Government planning policy around MHF in Victoria,” it stated. IT IS hard to walk through the Werribee Racing Club’s quarantine centre and not get star struck. For the past few months, racing royalty has called Werribee home as some of the sport’s most high profile trainers, owners and jockeys launch their assaults on the Spring Carnival. Melbourne and Caulfield Cup winner Dunaden is just one of the big names back at Werribee in 2013 and has been joined by other stars of the track including Red Cadeaux, Dandino and Mount Athos. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said it was an exciting time of year. “This facility has only been operating for three years. “Over those three years we have had two Melbourne Cup winners and a Caulfield Cup winner,” he said. “All the connections, they all stay locally which is fantastic for the local community. “They are here every day and they are investing and spending in the local community. “From our point of view that is great to see. “The other thing about having these horses here is the people who are out here every day. “The likes of Gai Waterhouse and Luca Cumani are on the grounds just walking around.” Depending on the result of this year’s Melbourne Cup, Kendell is hoping racegoers attending the TAB Werribee Cup will be in for a special treat. Cup field based at Werribee, a winner in the race that stops the nation could see a special guest on the day. “At some point in the future, statistics will tell you we are probably going to get another winner of the Melbourne Cup that is based here,” Kendell said. “What we will be doing is, the sec-
ond that horse goes over the line at Flemington, I’ll be going to the owner and saying, now you are coming down the straight on TAB Werribee Cup Day. “We have such a good relationship with all these guys... they would be more than happy to do it.”

By NICOLE VALICEK A BESTSELLING author was not horsing around when she said she would give the royalties of her latest eBook to charity. Altona Meadows author Maxine Sullivan is a USA TODAY Bestselling Author of 13 romance novels and has resided in the area for more than 20 years. Now she is giving half her royalties from her latest eBook, described a sexy romantic comedy, called “Night Talk” to the Save a Horse Australia Horse Rescue and Sanctuary charity (SAHA). The not-for-profit-organisation helps to rehabilitate neglected, abused and slaughterbound horses and finds them forever homes. Maxine admits no-one was more surprised than her to find herself helping a horse charity. “Horses are magnificent animals but I’m a city girl and I’ve never been around them,” she said. Maxine credits a trip to Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary in the United Kingdom that opened her eyes to the extent of their abuse and the wonderful work the charity does to help ease their suffering. On her return to Australia she wanted to find a donkey sanctuary and instead came across SAHA. The self-funded organisation has been running for more than 10 years and was registered as a charity in 2009.

Local Altona Meadows author, Maxine Sullivan, will donate the royalties from her latest eBook to a horse charity. 109219 Picture: SUPPLIED Maxine, along with many others, helps to sponsor horses like Honey-Megs, a mare used purely for breeding and who’d just had her latest baby taken off her. She said SAHA saved her and she is now very loved and doing wonderfully. “It restores my faith in humanity and it’s the reason I want to get horse charities like
these noticed in the wider world through the sale of my book.” “I hope that people might consider sponsoring one of the SAHA horses or give a donation to help cover the cost of feed as well as the huge veterinary bills involved in bringing these animals back to health.” Maxine’s ebook can be found at http://www.maxinesullivan.com.
HOUSING affordability is a burning issue in Hobsons Bay and according to experts it’s only going to get worse. Laverton Community Integrated Services CEO Michael Pernar said homelessness was a problem in the municipality and housing affordability could displace people, especially those on benefits and low incomes. “The housing affordability is a twofold thing. First and foremost people don’t have enough disposable income and rental has become a high proportion of their weekly expenditure,” Mr Pernar said. He said 40 per cent of people that present to support services across Hobsons Bay claim inadequate income and don’t have enough to cover general living expenses. And almost 30 per cent of people present to services for assistance because of housing, homelessness and rental arrears, with more than 80 per cent indicating they have some type of mental health problem. He said 46 per cent of people that come through the service are men and 54 per cent are woman. Mr Pernar said the people seeking assistance were predominantly 25-45 years old with a six per cent increase in young people aged 18-25 years. “We’ve seen a lot more men present for services, years ago there was a low proportion of males coming in for assistance, now were seeing a lot more,” he said. Mr Pernar said the suburbs of Laverton and Altona Meadows has a high proportion of rooming houses where people will pay $180 a week for packed house and a single room. He said people in Hobsons Bay don’t recognise the high level of homelessness that is speared on by limited housing stock, limited rental properties and selective landlords.

Our bloody idiots By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM remains the dangerous driving capital of the West, with one in every 321 drivers caught drink driving over the last 18 months. New figures released by the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council as part of its Annual Report show that more hoons were also caught in Wyndham than in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melton, with a total of 159 being caught over the last year. Only Melton topped Wyndham
when it came to speeding drivers, with 272 drivers being nabbed this year. While Melton and Hobsons Bay both saw a decrease in the number of speeding drivers when compared to the year before, Wyndham and Maribyrnong saw marginal increases. A total of 95 speeding drivers wer e caught in Hobsons Bay while 83 and 159 were caught in Maribyrnong and Wyndham respectively. A total of 136 drivers were caught above the blood alcohol level in Wyndham, the equivalent of one
in every 351 drivers tested by police. Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong each had around one in 650 drivers nabbed while Melton had one in 523. The figures also pointed towards a worrying trend of drink driving based on gender. In most municipalities men were about twice as likely to be caught drink driving while in Wyndham they were almost three times as likely. In the annual report, chairman Jim Giddings said the community needed to unite to help lower the
amount of dangers on the roads. “The challenges of road safety issues are still there, but by bringing our local communities on board, we will continue to drive changes, including legislative changes, to meet the community’s expectations,” Mr Giddings said. “We still have a long way to go to reduce the over-representation of young drivers involved in road crashes however success has been achieved with the limited resources at our disposal.”
Hospital’s health tick By NICOLE VALICEK WILLIAMSTOWN Hospital met all of its targets for the quarter with the proportion of patients waiting in the emergency department well up on the statewide benchmark. Latest Victorian Health Services Performance data shows the Williamstown Hospital improved its performance in a key number of areas for the quarter ending June this year. The proportion of patients waiting less than four hours in the emergency department was 92 per cent, up on the statewide benchmark of 75 per cent, while 86 per cent of Category 1 to 5 emergency patients were seen within the clinically recommended triage times. Health Minister David Davis said more Victorians than ever were presenting to emergency departments and more emergency patients being admitted to hospital. Among its performance improvements Williamstown Hospital provided a total of 7088 beddays to patients in the three months to the end of June- up from 6814 bed-days for the previous quarter. They treated 96 per cent of Category 2 patients within 10 minutes of arrival at the ED in the three months to the end of June - up from 90 per cent in the June 2012 quarter. And they admitted 11 emergency patients in the three months to the end of June - up from seven emergency admissions in the previous three months. Western Health chief executive Associate Professor Alex Cockram said the number of patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list has increased due to a number of reasons. These include the growth within the catchment area and an increase in the number of Category 1 patients who require surgery within 30 days and the complex surgical procedures they require.

Unit’s 30 years of valued service THEY wear an unmistakable orange uniform and chances are you will require their emergency assistance more than once in a lifetime. On Saturday 9 November the Altona State Emergency Service (SES) will celebrate its 30th birthday. The Altona Unit is responsible for all SES calls for assistance within the Hobsons Bay community and support to other emergency service.
The Victoria State Emergency Service Altona Unit was established by the former City of Altona Council in 1983 and is manned by 24 trained, unpaid volunteers. Five of the original foundation volunteer members still serve in the unit. Four members including Craig MacCallum, Leigh Hardinge OAM, Alfred Pelns and Alan Tankard have completed more than 30 years of volunteer community service in the
City of Hobsons Bay. The fifth member, Kay Stirling has completed 25 years. Past Unit Controller Leigh Hardinge said the unit has a proud history of serving its community. “The Altona Unit has a hardworking group of volunteer members who come from all walks of life professions and trades, their community service being well supported by their families,” he said.
“Without their dedication, support and efforts, most of which is unseen by the community owing to the fact a large proportion of our work is usually carried out after hours, our community would indeed be the poorer. “In the words of Cr Grant at the public meeting in 1983, the Altona SES Unit is a fine asset to the city and the community.” The dinner is restricted to SES volunteers past and present.

Prime time for Cup By LIAM TWOMEY JUST eight days after the race that stops a nation, another champion of the track will be celebrated with the running of the 2013 TAB Werribee Cup. After being run in the lead up to Christmas last year, excitement levels are bursting at the seams with this month’s Cup taking place in the heart of the spring racing calendar. As well as following on from the Flemington Carnival, Werribee is also one of a host of weekday provincial cups including Kyneton, Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo making it a must stop destination for racegoers. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the spring timeslot was fantastic for the club. “It is amazing,” Kendell said.
Tuesday, 5 November, 2013 Page 3W
“To be back in the prime time of the spring racing carnival is great for everyone. “It also fits with other spring provincial race cups with clubs of a similar stature. “That gives us a real opportunity to grow and get back to where the Werribee Cup was.” As well as the running of the prestigious TAB Werribee Cup, there will also be seven other races on the day. The first race is scheduled for around noon. “The people around Werribee have told us how excited they are to be based in the spring,” Kendell said. “We have tried to pick up elements of what people have told us for our planning as well. “They loved the spring date and they loved the car parks so we have re-introduced car parks down the main straight.
“As well as that we will have the mixture of the corporate marquees, the mini marquees, the car sites and trackside enclosures so people will have a lot of options which is what we want to provide.” Anyone wishing to book a corporate marquee, mini marquee or buy tickets for the TAB Werribee Cup is encouraged to contact the club via its website, www.werribeeracingclub.com. au or call 1300 139 402. “We have just launched a brand new website,” Kendell said. “Previously we had one for the Werribee Function Centre and one for the Werribee Racing Club. “Now we have integrated them together so we have the one site. “They can do their complete online booking or they can use the information and call through to us.”

It’s an uncharitable trade TRADE at the newly renovated Williamstown Hospital Opportunity Shop is booming, unfortunately so too is the number of unsalable items being left on the footpath. Volunteers were stunned when opening the shop recently to find a fridge had been left out the front overnight when it clearly advises it is unable to sell electrical items. Western Health’s community engagement and volunteers manager Jo Spence said efforts to move these items elsewhere take’s up the valuable time of volunteers and the shop’s resources.
“The Hobsons Bay City Council were quick to remove the fridge from the footpath, however, it detracts from the pleasant look of Ferguson St when goods are constantly left outside,” she said. Ms Spence said the shop was open from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 4pm and asked that people bring their donations in during these hours, as most people do. “For safety reasons, we are not able to accept electrical items or baby items such as car seats and high chairs, so we would greatly appreciate if people could look within their own networks when it’s time
to move these items on.” She said they are grateful for the community’s support for the opportunity shop. “We are trying very hard to increase the quality of items in the shop in order to increase the money we raise for the Williamstown Hospital.” The money raised at the opportunity shop funds important projects at the Williamstown Hospital. The volunteer team aim to add Sunday trading to further increase their fund-raising. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jo Spence on 8345 1201 or jo.spence@wh.org.au. Oh, how their garden’s grown By NICOLE VALICEK A COMMUNITY garden that was developed as part of a program to promote healthy eating and exercise for over-55s will be opened to the public. The passionate gardeners at the Floyd Lodge community garden are busy preparing for their annual Spring Open Day on Saturday 9 November. Floyd Lodge gardening committee chairman Dennis Kerr said the event had become a regular feature on the spring calendar. “The gardeners and supporters want to invite the community in to see how the garden has grown over the past year,” Mr Kerr said.
There will be a barbecue lunch and tomato, cucumbers and other plants grown on site for sale. There will also be a special performance by Williamstown Willin Wimmin singing group. “We welcome everyone to come and see what we are doing here.” The community garden, known as ‘Floyd’s Patch’ is a thriving community garden made up of members from different backgrounds and countries. The garden is located at the base of the Floyd Lodge public housing tower, and was opened in early 2009. “The garden and the gar-
deners have flourished and the garden produces fantastic fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as trees and shrubs,” Mr Kerr said. Each year sees new developments with a worm farm added this year. Floyd’s Patch was developed as part of the ‘Well for Life’ program, which seeks to promote healthy eating and exercise for people over the age of 55. The Friends of Floyd Lodge Group is committed to encouraging community building and social inclusion. The open day will be held on Saturday 9 November at 63 Hanmer St, Williamstown, from noon to 2pm.
Joint approach to traffic challenge TWO vital sections of Melbourne’s road network - the CityLink Tunnels and West Gate Bridge - will undergo extensive resurfacing works in December. The co-ordinated CityLink and VicRoads project will fasttrack the works and avoid prolonged closures over a period of months. Roads Minister Terry Mulder said there would be tunnel and bridge closures at the same time, but VicRoads and CityLink had planned a strategic ap-
proach to minimise disruption to drivers. “It is great to see the joint approach by VicRoads and CityLink in dealing with this enormous traffic challenge,” Mr Mulder said. “This is a unique situation with both the CityLink tunnels and the West Gate Bridge needing maintenance work at the same time. Dean Zabrieszach from VicRoads added: “There will never be a good time to close major roads or tunnels, but the
work has to be done and we have chosen late December/early January when traffic volumes are at their lowest.” “The warmer weather will allow CityLink and VicRoads to get the most amount of work done in the shortest possible period of time.” Key travel dates including Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve will not be impacted. Savvy styles are set for Spring THE 2013 TAB Werribee Cup is about more than just racing. In fact, the spring timeslot is the perfect occasion for racegoers to enjoy the fun, food and fashion available on course. For the style savvy, the Fashions on the Field event will again take centre stage in front of the grandstand with the competition expected to be just as hot off track as on. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the on course entertainment was a highlight of last year’s Cup. “We are doing Fashions on the Field and that went fantastically last year,” he said. “Historically it used to be out the back but again we are going out in front on the grand stand because people loved to be able to watch that in between the races last year. “If entrants want to go on the website they can download the registration form and then fill it in and send it back to us. “Otherwise they can register online.” As well as the fashion, there will be plenty of eating and entertainment options available at the course.

There will also be a special members draw and children’s entertainment on course. “We are really encouraging everyone in Wyndham who would like to see the race club and this facility prosper to come along to the Werribee Cup,” Kendell said. “It is really important that they get behind the club and turn it into a date that starts to have its own tradition and own history so that we can get people to lock it in,” he said. “We are confident that over a period of a couple of years we can really grow it into something special. “This is primetime and the best date the club has had for seven years. “To have this here, we want to keep it and really make something out of it.”

Harsh road By NICOLE VALICEK ROAD accident victims and their families will be hurt by changes to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) scheme, according to Member for Altona District Jill Hennessy. Ms Hennessy said legislation introduced by the Napthine Government and expected to be voted on last week was a savage attack on the rights of victims of road trauma. She said under the proposed scheme grieving families of people who die or are severely injured in transport accidents will be denied compensation. “Under the changes, a family member can only claim to have suffered from the death of their closest relatives if they can prove they were unable to work for three years after the accident occurred,” she said. “This means children, retirees, stay-at-home parents and
people who can’t work due to disability will be instantly excluded from receiving assistance to help put their lives back together.” She said under the current TAC scheme, family members are allowed to claim compensation for mental injury or nervous shock. And a further change includes abolishing the right of family members to make a claim if the dead or injured relative attempted to, or committed, suicide. However, according to a letter to the editor written by TAC CEO Janet Dore on 29 October, public commentary about the proposed reforms has been “misleading and alarming”. “The TAC is committed to supporting Victorians who are injured or lose their loved ones in a transport accident,” Ms Dore said. She said the proposed leg-
islative changes will increase some of the benefits available to regional Victorians, as well as ensure the scheme’s long term viability to help all Victorians who need TAC support into the future. “We’ve increased family counselling from $5870 to $15,000 ensuring families have access to more support at such a difficult time.” Ms Dore said other new supports include increasing funds granted for funeral expenses and family travel expenses and establishing a modern definition of serious mental illness. “This will not exclude Victorians with a mental injury from funded TAC support or from compensation,” she said. “The proposed changes will simply bring mental injuries in line with physical injuries, in that only people with severe mental injuries can sue for damages.”

Keane to ride and conquer cancer By NICOLE VALICEK KEANE Collier recently completed an epic 200-kilometre cycling event, but he said the challenge of the ride was nothing compared to the cause it was helping. The Seaholme resident is fresh from participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer fundraising event. The Melbourne ride stretched from Albert Park to Hastings and benefits the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The first time competitor said he was inspired to do the ride after a close family member of his fiancée was diagnosed with cancer around this time last year. “The fund-raising and the awareness they get out of that weekend is second to none,” Keane said. Keane said the family member, who finished chemotherapy and radiation earlier this year, went through the Peter MacCallum centre for treatment and care. “A lot of people I’ve known went through the private system, Peter MacCallum is the only public system in Australia dedicated to cancer, it touched a bit closer to home.” Keane said he hadn’t done anything like the ride before but wanted to help. “I felt like a great sense of achievement to be able to finish

Libraries up for fine cause HOBSONS Bay Libraries are preparing to help local charities again this festive season with the Food for Fines program. The libraries are taking nonperishable foods instead of cash as payment for overdue charges. This year’s aim is to reach a total of 2013 items. The program, which is now in its fifth year, is a unique initiative that benefits local charities, which are inundated by requests for help at this time of year.
Hobsons Bay City Council provides its support by allowing the fines to be waived, which can be worth thousands of dollars. From Monday 18 November until Sunday 15 December, library members with overdue materials will be able to donate one food item to pay up to $10 in overdue charges, with no limit on how much they can pay. Food should be tinned or in sealed packages, such as tinned
meat, fruit and vegetables or specialty Christmas items such as puddings, mince pies or shortbread. Expiry dates of the items must be 2014 or later. While borrowers will have the option to pay for their overdue fines with food or money, people with no fines can also contribute to the collections. For library branch details, call 9932 1000 or visit www. hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

Kenny Weir and Lauren Wambach are joining forces to pick out the best dishes in the Picture: CONTRIBUTED West. 109126
In search of the best from West By CHARLENE MACAULAY THESE bloggers know their food - and they’re keen to celebrate the best of the West. Food bloggers Lauren Wambach from the Footscray Food Blog and Kenny Weir from Consider the Sauce have joined forces to launch The Westies Dishes of Distinction. The awards will celebrate three dishes a year that they believe exemplifies good western suburbs grub. The selection process will take into account taste, consistency, pricing, and a sense of uniqueness or tradition. Ms Wambach and Mr Weir said the awardas were about
“We see The Westies - Dishes of Distinction as a really exciting and enjoyable way of broadening appreciation of the food culture of the Western Suburbs”. Mr Weir added: “It’s going to be a tough choice, but who better than Lauren and I to make it?” The 2013 winners will be announced at the combined Footscray Food Blog/Consider the Sauce Spring Picnic at Yarraville Gardens on Saturday 30 November. The picnic starts 11am, and The Westies will announced at noon.
celebrating the big food culture across the West and the people who create it. In addition to her blog, Ms Wambach has contributed to food sections in The Age, Broadsheet and Time Out and campaigns such as the Footscray Food Map. She also runs regular food tours in Footscray. Mr Weir, who became a resident of the West more than a decade ago, has used his love of the culinary arts to expand son Benny’s palate. “It’s been a thrill and a privilege running one of only two Melbourne food blogs dedicated to the Western Suburbs,” Ms Wambach said.

Vital Toyota jobs HOBSONS Bay City Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of a Productivity Commission inquiry into the future viability of the automotive industry. High profile winners SINCE its gates were first opened in 1862, the Werribee Racing Club has been a favourite spot for racegoers from both country and metropolitan Victoria. The first TAB Werribee Cup was won by Ptah in 1916 and following a two-year break, the next was won by Shako in 1919. One of the most high profile TAB Werribee Cup win-
ners was Makybe Diva, victorious in 2002. The next year the mare went on to win the first of her three Melbourne Cups. Last year’s TAB Werribee Cup was won by Unusual Suspect which stormed home to sweep the field on the line to the delight of its trackside owners. The horse added its name to the club’s rich history books.

On Kelly’s trail By NICOLE VALICEK CELEBRITY author Peter FitzSimons will entertain and discuss his latest book about Australia’s most iconic figure in Hobsons Bay tomorrow. Mr FitzSimons delves into the story of Australia’s most notorious legend in his new book, Ned Kelly, which he will present at the Williamstown Town Hall tomorrow at 1pm. “I am really looking forward to coming to Melbourne and talking about my favourite subject - Ned Kelly,” Mr FitzSimons said. “Beyond being perhaps the most iconic Australian who ever lived - and I stand by that phrase, whether you love him or hate him - I also think he is one of the most fascinating.” Ned Kelly has been at the heart of Australian culture and identity since he and his gang were tracked down in bush land by Victorian police and came out fighting, dressed in bulletproof iron armour made from farmers’ ploughs. Historians still disagree over virtually every aspect of Ned’s brushes with the law. “A good man or a bad man? I’d like to think I have written the book in a way so that the reader can be with Ned every step of the way, and decide for themselves.” FitzSimons is Australia’s biggest selling non-fiction author of the last 10 year and was named as a Member of the Order of Australia for service to literature. He is the author of more than

Big screen, tight deadline By NICOLE VALICEK A PASSIONATE filmmaker from Laverton joined more than 60,000 people on six continents over one sleepless weekend creating short films at breakneck speed. Haydn Growden recently participated in the 48 Hour Film Project competition. The project involves a team of amateur and professional filmmakers getting together and writing, shooting, editing and scoring a five-minute film in just 48 hours. On Friday night, amateur and professional filmmakers were assigned a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre that must be included in each movie. Just 48 hours later, contestants must submit films that are shown on the big screen of a local theatre. The registered high school English teacher writes for business magazines and provides training to the legal and accounting profession, said he wanted to tell his stories through film. Haydn attended filmmaking courses and said he loved everything he experienced from doodling concept ideas to script, directing actors and bringing their talents to the screen and the craft of filmmaking. “It is just great great great fun. I am totally addicted to filmmaking. I love everything about it. Films are the highlight of my year.” Haydn was encouraged to join the 48 Film project by a course teacher. Armed with a new camera

Haydn Growden accepted the sleepless challenge to create a short film in just 48 hours recently. 109039 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI he was ready to take his learning about film to the next level. This year, the draw criteria for his team called “First Cut” was fantasy for the genre, the character was a photographer named Simon Dawkins, the prop was a brick and the line was “there is another way to do it you know”. Haydn admits it was a challenge to apply the creative pro-
cess to these strict criteria. “It is an absolutely great experience to see your own film aired in a packed-out cinema.” Haydn attended the screening of his film last Thursday at the Cinema Nova where the award night will be held on 8 November. First prize is a flight to the US to compete at this year’s Filmapalooza in New Orleans.

WILLIAMSTOWN Musical Theatre Company Inc is asking audiences to think about the question ‘to pee or not to pee’ in its latest production. Imagine a town where there is virtually no water left. Private restrooms no longer exist and everyone is forced to pay to use the town’s only public facility. Such is the life in Urinetown, where a 20-year drought has made it hard for residents to get relief. Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc is proud to present Urinetown – highly satirical, tongue-in-cheek tale of big-city greed, corruption and romance on the wrong side of the law. In this user-pays world, two young people meet and fall in love, Hope and Bobby. Hope is the optimistically naive daughter of water magnate Caldwell B Cladwell, and the revolutionary Bobby Strong, who inspires the disaffected populace with his forthright conviction that no one ought to be forced to pee at someone else’s convenience. The character of Bobby Strong, played by Werribee local Marco Fusco was included on New York Theatre Monthly’s list of “The 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre. Director Anna Marinelli said lovers of musical theatre would recognise the writers’ clever comparisons with other musicals like “Les Miserables, “West Side Story and “Fiddler on the Roof. “Those not familiar with

Grant’s a real treat By NICOLE VALICEK A PROJECT that aims to build children’s knowledge of healthy lifestyles and promote healthy eating has come to the Altona North Early Childhood Centre. The local organisation will now be able to further develop the talents of its children by building a chicken pen and vegetable garden, as well the purchase of a new oven to bake healthy and creative food for its students. The project was made possible by a $1200 grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund. Acting Telstra Country Wide area general manager for Melbourne CBD and south west Robert Franze said the grants helped boost children’s connection to their local community. “We are proud to be able to help local groups, such as Altona North Early Childhood Centre, support the
skills, talents and development of children. “The funds make a positive and lasting difference to children’s futures and make a genuine difference to local organisations supporting children.” Grant recipients are nominated by Telstra employees whose children in their immediate family are actively in involved in community organisations. Tesltra Foundation chairman Geoff Booth said the grant will assist local children to make connections that impact positively on their lives. “Over the past 11 years, thousands of groups across Australia have benefitted from Telstra’s Kids Fund grants, including schools, art and culture groups, sport and recreational clubs, disability services and environmental organisations,” Mr Booth said.

21-year-old Olly Tripodi wants to be Australia’s next political voice. 109300
Picture: NICOLE VALICEK
Youth issues on Olly’s broad shoulders By NICOLE VALICEK WILLIAMSTOWN resident Olly Tripodi is in the running to become the voice of Australia’s largest generation. The 21-year-old was announced as one of five MTV Millennium Movement finalists recently -- a competition to find Australia’s next young political voice. The millennial generation (born 1982-2003) represents 30 per cent of the entire Australian population but accounts for 46 per cent of the 1.2 million Australians who have not enrolled to vote. Olly is the head of the 2013 Youth Parliament and extensively advocated for the beliefs of the young.
“The idea was pitched as, we’re looking for a young person to speak on behalf of all young people, noting that they don’t represent themselves that well,” he said. “I saw an opportunity to represent issues that I believe in but also speak on behalf of young people.” Olly said he was sick of hearing about the apathy, laziness and disengagement of young people today. “If I could be part of or at the forefront on a movement that rectifies that misunderstanding, then that would be something that I could be proud of and something that’s really important.” The passionate young person said he would relish in the opportunity to pres-
ent important issues to young people in an assessable way and get them interested in the political system. “An individual whose sole job is to advocate the beliefs of young people in a journalistic capacity just doesn’t exist elsewhere.” “Solely representing this position would be good and asking the hard questions of decision makers.” “This is the most incredible opportunity that I’ve ever had and that’s the honest truth.” The elected Millennial Leader will be announced on 14 November, and will be ‘in office’ until 15 September, 2014 . Elite among fitness trainer’s clients By CHARLENE MACAULAY HE WAS the personal trainer to the late Princess Diana and has helped four Brownlow medallists reach peak fitness - now Cameron Falloon wants to whip you into shape. Mr Falloon has returned to his roots and opened The Exercise Room 24:7 along Buckley St, Footscray, just over a month ago to prove that anyone can achieve their fitness goals. The gym, which already has more than 600 members, is equipped with the latest technology and equipment, including large tablet-like screens on all cardio machines so that gym goers can watch their favourite TV show, surf the web, download music or walk along a virtual Grand Canyon while doing their workout. Mr Falloon said one group of women watched The Bachelor every week while training. The gym also aims to offer a lot of free community programs. There is already a free running group two mornings a week for members and non-members and a road riding
group is about to start, where riders can exercise in a safe and fun environment and then grab a coffee and socialise after. Mr Falloon got into the fitness industry after being derailed by a serious back injury and was told he would never play sport or be active again. “I refused to accept that, so I went down as many avenues as I could to find a solution.” He studied anatomy and physiology at Monash University and did a fitness instructors course before doing personal training in London. It was here he found himself, aged 22, as a personal trainer at Princess Diana’s gym. About 10 months in, he was offered the chance to train Princess Diana herself. “She was great. She had a great sense of humour and it was good to know she was able to speak comfortably with me. “It was a little bit surreal and not something I talk about a lot, because I know how private she wanted her life to be.”

THREE artists will step back and take a moment in time when they exhibit their latest works at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre. Moments in Time is an exhibition of 3D works made of glass, textiles, resin and metal by local artists Carole Kernohan, Michelle Guest and Stephen Guest. Carole said the exhibition started with her collecting watch components and then capturing them in resin. “This then became a discussion point
for us as we explored the many aspects of time and how we like to spend our time,” she said. She said the project gave the artists an opportunity to express how we reflect on time, how the past influences the present time and into the future. “How time flows and moments can be both fleeting and slow, they can be happy, sad, exciting, fun, surprising.” She said the exhibition is a reminder of the importance to remember “Moments in Time” as they are a part of the experience of life.
“Life is made up of many moments. There are many moments that create the twist and turns as we travel through life.” “The idea of enjoying to the point of play - thus bringing the lack of drudgery working, has allowed each of us to find our individual style and expression which fills our insides with wonder, laughter, exploration, vision and sharing,” Michelle said. The exhibition will run at the Louis Joel Community Arts and Community Centre, 5 Sargood St, until the 10 November.

Swimming journey
1092243-EP38-13
AFTER celebrating 40 years of teaching swimming, Paul Sadler’s Swimland introduces the Swimland Journey program. The Swimland Journey reinforces a core value of celebrating children’s achievements by creating four Very Proud Moments that give children special recognition. When the child gains their Maxi Pink certificate, that child is becoming an independent survivor who is familiar with the water. At this point they learn freestyle and backstroke simultaneously. To celebrate this very proud moment the child receives a Goggle Licence and a voucher to purchase a pair of goggles. The second Very Proud Moment occurs when the child gains their Green certificate. This is when the child learns all the aquatic recreational options they can safely participate in when they pass the third Swimland Very Proud Moment, the Swordy 1km Gold Medal. The child is given access to a five minute online video showing the recreational options available to them by using a password to Green World on the Swimland website. Dealing with your dog’s dodgy tummy GASTROENTERITIS is commonly seen in puppies and adult dogs with vomiting and/or diarrhoea being the typical signs. A very common cause of gastroenteritis is dietary indiscretion. This includes eating spoilt leftovers, garbage or high fat food. Other causes include viruses, infections and parasites or possibly swallowing a foreign object. If the gastroenteritis is accompanied by a loss of appetite, lethargy or pain then a serious underlying disorder may be present and urgent veterinary attention should be sought. Blood in the faeces or vomit is also a cause for concern especially
for parvovirus in a young puppy. For a bright and happy dog with gastroenteritis we usually withhold all food for 24 hours but still give water. Then a bland diet, such as boiled chicken and white rice, is fed for two to three days. We check that the pet’s parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. If signs persist for more than a few days the pet may become dehydrated. Blood tests and X-rays may be required in some cases as well as medical treatment with fluids, antibiotics and prescription diets. The good news is that most dogs with gastroenteritis will respond well to the correct treatment.

UNIQUE INDOOR CATTERY IN HOPPERS CROSSING

Life has been a little rough, so I’m ready for a new beginning where I can really build my conidence. If you’re patient with me, in time I’ll reward you with years of affection. I really enjoy being around people, so I would love to spend lots of time inside with you. My new owners will need to have a consult with our behaviour team to discuss my issues with handling. I don’t need a huge amount of grooming, but I’d enjoy a quick brush every few days. I would like to live in a mature family, as kids can be a bit overwhelming for me.

2. If the dog is in distress, call 000 and ask for police to attend, explain the situation and police will make every effort to respond quickly; 3. Call the RSPCA on 9244 2237, they may not be able to respond as quickly as the police but inspectors will make the job a priority and investigate any possible offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Tests conducted by Melbourne’s Metropolitan Ambulance Service on a 29 degree day with the car’s air conditioning having cooled the interior to a comfortable 20 degrees showed it took just 10 minutes for the temperature to more than double to 44 degrees.

Dogs in hot cars are in danger THERE has been an increasing number of reports of dogs being left in cars by their owners for varying lengths of time. This is an extremely dangerous practice because the temperature in cars can rise dramatically even on mild days. Owners are reminded to never leave their dog unattended in a car. Dogs die very quickly from heat stress in these situations. The death would be slow and agonising for the helpless dog. Anyone who sees a dog left in a car unattended should take the following steps: 1. Attempt to locate the driver of the car and explain that the dog is in great danger even if left for only a few minutes;

Neil on the record
shorts
By LIAM TWOMEY
Horses for courses
HE started as a player, progressed to committee member, was promoted to president and now Altona Cricket Club’s Neil Birthisel is a record breaker. Playing against Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association rivals Werribee last week, Birthisel struck 26 runs in the first innings to become the A’s leading run scorer of all time. En route to the milestone, he passed previous record holder and one of his good friends Gordon MacFarlane. Birthisel now sits on top of the tree at Altona with 6276 runs in a brilliant career. “People have made a bigger thing about it than what I have individually,” Birthisel said after reaching the milestone. “While I am humbled and honoured, it is a team sport and it is all about playing for the team. “I passed one of my good mates in Gordon McFarlane and he is a legend as far as I am concerned. He has played a higher grade of cricket than I have. “I have so much respect for the blokes that I have passed in the last few years. They have all been top grade cricketers whereas I have pottered along doing my own thing.” After growing up in North Ballarat, Birthisel joined Altona as a 22 year old and has played at the club for the past 27 years. On field, he said being a part of the premiership winning third grade side and an against all odds victory on a wet wicket over Broadmeadows, were two of his most memorable highlights. However, it is his work offfield which Birthisel has enjoyed just as much.
As one of the senior players at Altona, he also coaches the club’s under-11s and helps mentor other young players on the way up the ranks. “That role is more enjoyable,” he said. “I have played a lot of cricket and I think I know a little bit about the game and I like to impart that little bit of knowledge. “The ones that are willing to listen, I am more than happy to help them along. “I still coach the under-11s down there and my young fella is playing in the under-11s. I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing kids improve. We have taken kids that couldn’t bowl and bat and now they are doing really well and getting a lot of enjoyment out of the game. They are the special things.” At the end of the 2012/13 season, Birthisel retired as Altona president. His replacement, Neil Burns congratulated his predecessor on reaching the milestone and described Birthisel as one of the greats of the club. “This is testament to his professionalism and what he means to the club,” Burns said. “His attitude and the way he goes about his cricket are second to none. “What he puts back into the club, he should be proud of everything he has achieved and it is something to look back on in the future. Breaking any record for any club is a great achievement and we are certainly proud to have him as part of our club.”
DERBY Day at Flemington saw horses from the Werribee quarantine facility again hitting top form on the track. The Andrew Balding trained Side Glance crossed the line first in the Group One Longines Mackinnon Stakes. That was just the start of the good results though with the Ed Walker trained Ruscello taking out first place in the group three Lexus Stakes. The victory has qualified Ruscello for the Melbourne Cup. In total, 11 horses based at the Werribee quarantine facility will be competing in the Melbourne Cup. GRAND United is on top of the ladder in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A1 Turf competition after scoring an impressive win over Williamstown Congs on Saturday. United sent Congs in to bat at Parsons Reserve and it proved to be a masterstroke by skipper Glenn Sullivan, as the visitors stumbled to finish their 40-over dig all out for 113. Led by opener Dillon Hinge (42), Grand United cruised home in its chase, reaching 4/120 by the end of the 27th over. In other A1 Turf results, West Newport got its first win of the summer, taking care of St Johns’ 112 in 24 overs, finishing 2/114. Meanwhile Gellibrand is third on the table after getting the job done against the Williamstown Colts on Saturday. David Croft scored 80 to help Gellibrand to 6/168 - a total the Colts could not match, falling 81 runs short. Williamstown Imperials (4/196) was also a winner over Bellbridge (7/150) in round four action.

Bulldogs’ bats have a blast By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater is in a strong position after day one of its Premier Cricket clash with Prahran on the weekend. After being sent in to bat by the home team, Bulldogs’ openers Dean Russ and Anthony Barton wasted no time making themselves at home in the middle. The pair added a brilliant 170 for the first wicket with Russ blasting 70 off 102 balls while Barton fell just short of his century and was out for 91. However, Footscray’s middle order wasn’t able to capitalise on the start as Prahran launched a fight back with the ball. Both Russ and Barton were dismissed without a run being added to the tally and in the blink of an eye, Travis Dean, Dylan Kight and Michael Hill were also back in the pavilion. Luckily for Footscray, Sunam Gautam was able to steady the ship
Sports
with a hard-fought 52 while Guy Walker and Hamish Winter-Irving worked hard at the crease. The Bulldogs’ innings eventually came to a close in the 84th over with the score at 308. For Prahran, James Miller was the pick of the bowlers and finished with figures of 4/74 while Bryce McGain took 3/85. The early finish to the innings gave Footscray two overs to bowl and the results were immediate when Jake Haberfield removed Nicholas Morrey for a duck to have Prahran reeling at 1/0. The True Blues will resume their innings at 1/6 on Saturday. It was a similar story for Footscray in the second XI, with the Bulldogs seemingly cruising at 5/199 on day one of their clash, also against Prahran. But a late collapse was again on the cards, this time dismissing the club for 226. In reply, Prahran is 0/17.

BLUE skies, mild temperatures and a slight breeze made for perfect racing conditions for the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing, with A Grade’s Simon Hurn making it two wins in a row. Hurn just held out St Kilda rider Richard Braic and Brett Hickford in the sprint. The Williamstown resident thought that there were quite a few riders in B who should have joined in on A Grade, with low numbers reducing the quality of A’s racing. On the bell lap 39-year-old Hurn ensured he was not going to be overrun. “I made sure I was out the front and had a small gap turning onto the straight, and then worked to maintain the gap.” Hurn is hoping to continue his winning streak and is hoping for a hat-trick on his next outing. The B Grade race was dominated by the in-form Damien Harris powering away at the front, as well as quite a few attacks and breakaways from the likes of Leigh Kelly, Danny Bellis, and Josh Toohey. But the bunch was willing to chase and worked well to bring back all breaks. The bunch sprint saw an improving Richard Conejo take the early kick, the 40-year-old said he was enjoying improving after a difficult year.“ I went early and tried to pick which wheel to follow,” he said.“ I saw a couple of guys ease up on the straight so I went to the right and just kept pushing - I wasn’t concerned about anyone behind and didn’t know how close anyone was.” Point Cook resident Conejo was a bike length clear of second placed Travis Small who held off a fast finishing Mark Micallef and Ben Ryan. Conejo has been racing for five seasons, but has struggled with form due to recurring tonsillitis, and feels things are turning around. In other results, Andrew Schieseck won C Grade while Brett Manning took out D Grade.

Jet forms up for selection By ADEM SARICAOGLU WESTERN Jets best-and-fairest winner David Iaccarino is ready for senior footy. And after a year of dealing with persistent shoulder issues and equally stifling opponents, you’d expect him to be. The 18-year-old Williamstown product had a year worth savouring in the TAC Cup, finding plenty of the footy on a weekly basis and even managing to penetrate on the scoreboard with 16 goals. His form also warranted a VFL debut with Williamstown, in which he proved just how damaging a senior player he’ll turn out to be with two goals and 23 disposals against Bendigo. “Playing with Willy this year really made me excited about next year,” Iaccarino said. “I feel like I can fit the mould pretty good, so I’m definitely excited about senior footy and I want to play at the best level I can play at.” Jets coach Torin Baker knows just how well the Barry Round Medallist can stamp his authority on a game of footy, and has been staunch in his belief Iaccarino developed into one of the TAC Cup’s better midfielders throughout his stellar season in blue and gold. “He had some more attention due to that,” Baker explained. “But he was still able to find a way to be able to really impact games and that’s just due to the fact that he can win his own ball and he’s really good at winning some uncontested ball as well.” Iaccarino was cleared to play after injuring his troublesome shoulder early in the season and as a result was hampered in certain areas of his game. That the talented midfielder was still able to produce what he did, despite being forced to alter his tackling technique and on several occasions
Draft Watch David Iaccarino DOB: 20/12/1994 Junior club: Williamstown Position: Midfielder 2013 Average Disposals: 24.56 (18 games) Torin Baker says: “In the end, a lot of it comes down to performance and as far as we go, David’s been one of our absolute very best. He’s just shown that he can really dominate TAC Cup footy.”
David Iaccarino gathered 28 disposals and kicked a goal against Dandenong in round five of the TAC Cup this season. 97935 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT playing through the pain of numerous partial dislocations, impressed Baker even more. “When any player can play under duress and still perform it shows that they’re a player that’s got some real character about them,” Baker noted.
“The fact he was able to cope with that says a lot about him.” Late last month Iaccarino underwent the shoulder re-construction he’d been slated for earlier in the year and is currently in the middle of rehab, but he is expecting to be ready to play a big part in 2014, wherever he ends up.
Despite missing out on Vic Metro selection and combine invitations, Iaccarino is comfortable with letting his formidable body of recent on-field work speak for itself during the upcoming AFL draft period. “I don’t read too much into it,” he said.
“Being a 19-year-old (in December), I knew it was going to be hard to make those sorts of things, so I wasn’t too worried about that at all. “If I’m good enough, I’ll get picked. So it doesn’t really fuss me too much.”
State slot set for young gun in Hobart Fahey signs FOOTSCRAY Edgewater younggun Guy Walker has been selected in the Victorian under-19 cricket side. Walker will pull on the Big V for the national championships, which will be played in Hobart at the start of December. The teenager has enjoyed a solid start to the Premier Cricket season for Footscray with a top score of 35 coming against Casey-South Melbourne in round four. He has also taken two wickets while bowling at a good economy rate. Walker will be joined by some of the best young cricketers from around Australia for the championships. Victorian academy coach Jarrad Loughman is excited about the prospects of his side. “We have a good mix of top and bottom age,” Loughman said. “The bottom agers have the experience from last year of winning the championships in Hobart, where we are going to be playing, so I think that’s a big thing.” The team consists of six top-age players and seven bottom age, of which all but one were part of last season’s title-winning Victorian under-17 squad. Loughman lauded the depth in the state, saying selection was very difficult this season.

ration for the national championships in January. Footscray Edgewater assistant coach Duncan Harrison will be the team’s head coach.
WILLIAMSTOWN has continued its busy offseason, adding key defender David Fahey to its playing stocks. Fahey joins the Seagulls from the Essendon Football Club having spent the past year with the Bombers’ VFL side and the previous three seasons with Coburg. After playing for the Calder Cannons as a junior, Fahey has played 18 senior VFL games and was also a member of Coburg’s 2012 premiership winning development side. With Essendon fielding a large contingent of AFL players each week he struggled for senior opportunities, playing only four senior games but was one of the most dominant defenders playing for Aberfeldie in the Essendon District Football League. Fahey was recognised for his strong season by being named full back in the EDFL Team of the Year. Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said that Fahey was another important piece in the Seagulls’ recruiting puzzle. “He’s going to be very important for us down back,” he said. “Fahey’s a player we’ve always rated when watching him over the past few years and we’re delighted to bring him across. We know he can perform a real lock down role down back, as well as being able to play as a third tall so he’s going to be a key part of our make up next year. “Dave’s probably been a victim of alignments over the past few years so he is pretty excited about the opportunities with the club going standalone in 2014.”

WHILE it might be cricket season, footy news seems to be what everyone is still talking about and everyone was buzzing with the news that dual Hawthorn premiership player Brent Guerra will join his brother Luke at Deer Park in the WRFL next year. It is a boost for the reigning premiers, who will also have James Condos back, as well as a few of their Division 2 Premiership team from 2011. One big surprise for me is the news that David Mitchell is putting the boots back on for North Footscray in Division 2, under new coaches Shaun Borlase and Matty Walsh. The three ex Hoppers Crossing favourites will certainly give the Devils a much needed boost. I HAVE mentioned the new WRFL club the Tarneit Tigers and the return to the WRFL of Werribee Districts, to be coached by Wade Chapman, but there is another new club launching in Westbourne Grammarians FC, which is rising from the ashes of the Old Westbourne AFC. The new club will remain at the Westbourne School and has appointed Roger Hand as Senior Coach with Justin Johns returning from Clunes as a playing assistant coach. Fab Gatti will be looking after the under 19s and the club will be playing in Division 4. Anyone interested in playing, or being involved should contact the club westbournegrammarians@gmail.com I do wonder where all these new clubs are going to get players from, but I guess we will have to wait and see. POINT Cook Football Club will be fielding its first ever girls team in 2014, and has appointed Belinda McErvale as inaugural coach. Belinda is well known in the area in her job as a teacher at Carranbach College. She has played for Melbourne Uni in the Women’s Football League for over 10 years with more than 150 games under her belt. Her experience

and enthusiasm should make for a great team atmosphere. Anyone interested in playing or being involved should contact Mark King 0447 156 108 or markk4@bigpond.com.au AFTER my experiences this year with the Auskick program, which I absolutely loved, the importance of junior coaching was really brought home to me. It is great to see most sports now with their own version of Auskick, with the aim of teaching kids the basic skills of the sport and the importance of teamwork and physical activity. The hole in the system now, is when kids hit their teens and other activities take them away from sport. For me, I remember not playing any sport from the age of 17 to about 28, because of work commitments. That is happening younger these days as kids have part-time jobs. All sports have to look at the 12 to 16 year olds and come up with a way to keep them involved, because that is where the drop off is happening. Overall participation figures are up in many sports, but I think there are gender and age factors, that have resulted in what I would term as ‘creative accounting’. Got any ideas? LITTLE River Cicket Club is having a Past Players and Officials Function on Saturday 30 November from 2pm, at its home ground, Little River Reserve. Roadstar Isuzu takes MU-X to the max THE Isuzu D-Max ute will soon have a closely-aligned SUV sibling. The Japanese truck brand, which also imports utes to Australia through a separate distributor, is set to unveil a seven-seat SUV variant currently referred to in-house as the MU-X. The MU-X has already received Australian design approval. Documents indicate the new vehicle will be offered in 2WD and 4WD guises. Reports suggest that SUV is due to be unveiled in Thailand this month, with an Australian release slated for December. Isuzu has offered a sevenseat SUV in Thailand since 2004, called the MU-7, but it has never been sold in Australia. It’s believed the MU-X will sport a front end resembling the new D-Max ute design, which launched in Australia last June. The Isuzu will join a growing crop of rugged SUVs based on dual-cab utes, including the Holden Colorado, Nissan Pathfinder and Mitsubishi Challenger. Ford Australia is also work-
ing on an SUV variant based on the locally-engineered Ranger ute, called the Everest. The Australian-spec DMax is currently powered by a 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine producing 130kW and 380Nm. However, a European version is also available with a 2.5-litre turbo diesel variant which meets strict Euro 5 diesel emission standards that will apply to all Australian vehicles from 2016. The Isuzu brand has played its hand in the Australian SUV market previously as the donor designer of the Holden Jackaroo and Frontera vehicles. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Kia, Isuzu Ute at 22 Morris Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, or call 9974 3799 for more information. Alternatively, visit Western Kia, Isuzu Ute at 51-53 Westwood Drive, Ravenhall, open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm, or call 8390 5165 to learn more. Isuzu Mu-X is set to hit Australian shores in December.

i30 SR & Accent SR Pro_cee’d takes in stock now “test drive now” a look forward The hot little Kia Pro_cee’d hatch.
THIS hot hatch might finally change people’s perceptions about Korean cars once and for all. Kia Pro_cee’d GT was designed by a Frenchman, engineered in Germany and is made in Slovakia which, incidentally, produces more cars per capita than any other country. All this possibly explains why it’s the most un-Korean Korean car to date. There are three models in the Kia GT range in Europe starting at the equivalent of $32,990 and stretching to $42,990. Australia will likely get two models when it goes on sale in March 2014. The local starting price is yet to be finalised but bank on
it being close to or less than $30,000, undercutting the enemy from within, the Veloster Turbo coupe from sister company Hyundai. Nice touches include the “ice-cube” style daytime running lights above the sleek fog lights, the wide blacked-out grille and the red VW Golf GTI-like flash across the front bumper. The faux-LED rings in the tail-lights look cool, as do the black accented 18-inch alloys, among the more original wheel designs of late. Inside, the Recaro seats are super comfortable and there is ample room for storage in the glovebox, centre console and door pockets.
Its mixed design background adds to its unique flair.
