Have you heard the Screaming Jets? IT’S been three long years since the Screaming Jets tore up the stages of Australia. But with an album on its way, the boys are back and Dave Gleeson took some time to speak with NewsWeekly about the future of The Jets. FOR DETAILS TURN TO PAGE 13

Undead are among us

’TWAS All Hallows Eve and the dead woke to feed on the flesh of the living ... This year, The Cube Wodonga came alive (well, sort of) with children and adults alike lining up to have their make-up done to participate in a Zombie Walk. See page 2 for more.

Stranger danger By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY police are appealing for information after two youths were approached by strangers last week. Police are also commending the reaction of the youths, proof the stranger danger message is being heard loud and clear. “It’s more than comforting – they obviously responded very well to the situation presented to them,” Inspector David Cottee said. At about 3.10pm on Wednesday 30 October, a 12-year-old girl was walking home from school in Douglas Road, Lavington when she was approached by a man in a car. The man

signalled to the girl to come over to the vehicle. The girl continued walking before the car drove away. The man was described as 50-60 years of age with a long white beard and fair skin and was wearing an orange high visibility jumper. The car was described as an older model white station wagon with silver roof racks. About 4.05pm on Thursday 31 October a 15-year-old boy was walking home from school in Wealands Street Lavington when he was approached by a man in a car who encouraged him to get in and be driven home. The boy refused and the man drove away. The man was described as an older

person with greying mid-length hair and wearing thick sunglasses. He was driving an older-type brown Holden with tinted windows. Police at this time are unsure of a link between these two incidents or the exact intentions of the persons involved. Police are asking parents to re-visit the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ messages with their children, including the following: Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times. Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths

or school. If you are frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police. Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust. Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop. If you are scared and can use a phone, call triple zero and tell them you are scared.

tries to grab you, yell · Ifout, someone ‘Go away, I don’t know you’. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t know. The incidents come three months after a man tried to abduct a 13-yearold schoolgirl walking home in Baranduda. Police are asking anyone with information to call the station on 6023 9299, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: www1.police.nsw.gov. au/. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. People should not report crime information via the Facebook page.

Night of the zombies

Editorial Don’t be a pumpkin

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THIS last week has seen a lot of discussion on the validity of Halloween for Australians, which has inevitably brought up the meaning of Halloween. With events like the Zombie Walk at The Cube, costume parties and the odd trick-ortreater floating around, everyone knows it’s Halloween. Social media in particular has also revealed that many people either don’t believe Halloween has anything to do with Australia and is simply another commercialised opportunity, or question if it’s right for us to celebrate – especially seeing as the origins of Halloween aren’t widely and correctly known in Australia. Halloween is a contraction of All Hallows’ Evening and is observed in a number of countries on 31 October – the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. Halloween initiates the triduum of Hallowmas - the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. According to many scholars, Halloween is a Christianised feast initially influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic Samhain. Other academics maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots. The bottom line is that either way, most Australians who celebrate Halloween have appropriated its meaning to that of another simple annual celebration. The question is, is there anything wrong with this? We think not – keep up the tradition!

HALLOWEEN at The Cube saw dozens of flesh eating zombies gather together – from brides and grooms to little schoolgirls and boys. The event began at 2.30pm with volunteers applying special make-up, paint and home-made products to demonstrate how easy it was to become a zombie. “I was asked to mentor two young girls in zombie make-up,” volunteer Melanie Ruth said. “So I did a whole lot of research and we did a practice run. We practiced everything – wounds, stitches, everything. “I taught the girls how to do these really horrible wounds. We didn’t use things like liquid latex so I scoured the kitchen and made up my own recipe with oatmeal, which is quite lumpy, flour, glycerine and water, and ended up with these really revolting, nasty looking wounds! Then we laid single ply toilet paper over the top and put the paint on. In the centre we used corn syrup because blood is shiny. I got creative with very little money. “Originally there were three of us and we got the librarian and the cultural development officer to do things as well, so they primed the kids for us and we did the details. “We had an absolutely fantastic time and I could not believe the amount of people who came along. Every time I looked up there was a sea of people, we were turning them away at the end of it. “We ran over time and a lot of people dispersed but about 15 of us walked down to the new Gothic shop to say hello and they set up all these coffins with great big hands coming out and the kids were lying in all these fake graves – it was really lovely.” City of Wodonga’s manager of marketing, tourism and community culture said The Zombie

Walk was the latest in a range of activities City of Wodonga was holding to promote activity in the cultural precinct. “We were thrilled with the number of people who participated and had their make-up done and then later took part in the Zombie Walk,” she said. “It was a great deal of fun and really proved an eye-catching and entertaining event for people of all ages.” Originating in North America, zombie walks have occurred throughout the world, with the first such gathering specifically called a “zombie walk” occurring in October 2003 in Toronto. The event was organised by local horror movie fan Thea Munster, and had only six participants. The zombie walk in November 2012 at the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-Saint Paul) holds the current world record for a zombie gathering and was recognised by Guinness who counted 8027 “zombies”on 13 October 2012. Estimates of the entire Twin Cities crawl put the zombie event upwards of 30,000 zombie participates. Some zombie walks have been established as annual traditions, with others are organised as spontaneous flash mob events or performance art.

Many zombie walks in the United States have been “hunger marches”, with the purpose of raising awareness of world hunger. During the walks, participants are encouraged to remain in their zombie characters which includes communicating like a zombie – grunting, groaning, slurred speech and moaning. It seems Zombie walks know no limits, with advanced techniques to heighten interest and realism. Some zombie mobs will “eat” victims to create new zombies in front of spectators. Some zombie mobs establish a route and an easily recognisable signal so that other participants can plant themselves along the route in old, tearable clothes, allowing the mob to attack new victims as they progress. As the zombies surround the new victim to loudly feed, concealing him or her from witnesses’ view, they tear clothes and quickly apply makeup and fake blood to create a new zombie, who then shambles along with the ever-expanding pack to find new victims. Some participants occasionally dress up as soldiers who are called in to contain the outbreak, or survivors who are trying to defend themselves from the onslaught of the zombie horde.

Ronald’s cry for McHelp By KRYSTEN MANUEL THIS year McHappy Day will be celebrated on Saturday 9 November, with the annual charity event calling on all Australians to help raise $3.4 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The funds raised on McHappy Day will continue to provide programs and services for families like the Joneses from Corowa who used the local Ronald McDonald Family Room facilities for two days after their daughter Sophie was born. Sophie’s mother Catriona said the Ronald McDonald Family Room provided a place of peace and rest when Sophie was born prematurely. “I ruptured my membrane and I had a three-day premature baby,” Ms Jones said. “She had a problem sucking, became jaundiced and had to go into the nursery. “Straight away Ronald McDonald House approached us and explained that we could stay there,

It was lovely – they were really warm, friendly and hospitable… Catriona Jones

which was perfect because my partner was a bit sickly and had come down with a cold. “It was lovely – they were really warm, friendly and hospitable and that was for two days. “We lived 45 minutes out of town, so it saves us time and money coming in and out of town.” Now in its 23rd year, McHappy Day has raised over $20 million for RMHC, with funds going towards building or extending new Ronald McDonald Houses, opening more Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and Ronald McDonald Family Retreats, as well providing more resources for the Ronald McDonald Learning Program. The 14 houses across Australia currently provide over than 85,000 families with a home away from home while their child undergoes

treatment for a serious illness at a nearby hospital. McDonald’s restaurants across the country will be a hive of activity on McHappy Day, as crew transform their restaurants with plenty of fun activities for the whole family. A variety of Australian celebrities will also be donning their McHappy Day hat to help out across Australia. Participating is easy – simply drop in to any one of the 900 McDonald’s restaurants across the country to make a donation or buy a Big Mac or Helping Hand, with $2 from every Big Mac and $1 from every Helping Hand sale being donated to RMHC. For those who cannot make it on the day, donations can also be made via the website: www. mchappyday.com.au

Thanks to Ronald McDonald House, little Sophie Jones was able to be with both her parents when she was born prematurely.

Snakes are about Allies line up on hawkweed THE arrival of Spring weather means that people are getting outdoors, at the same time as Victoria’s snakes are starting to become more active. Senior Scientist from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI) Nick Clemann said snakes were emerging from their hibernation over winter to bask in the sun and start moving about to look for food and a mate. “Spring means more people are out walking their dogs, cycling, bush-walking, enjoying parks and gardening so, depending on where they live and walk, they are quite likely to encounter a snake,” he said. “Snakes are more common in areas around the urban fringe or in rural areas, but they do

turn up surprisingly close to the city, especially around watercourses and in parkland.” “In drier areas, eastern brown snakes are common and an occasional red-bellied black snake is also encountered.” The Border region is also home to tiger snakes. “These species are dangerously venomous, but it is rare for them to bite people. Being aware that snakes may be around, and being informed about how to react to them, are the most important aspects of managing snakes.” Some key points to remember about living in an area with snakes: If you see a snake – keep calm and try to move yourself, anyone with you and your pets

away from the snake. Never touch or attempt to capture or hurt snakes – instead call DEPI on 136 186 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher. Have a spring clean – clean up around the house and cut lawns regularly – snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, or building materials. Undertake first aid training, ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call triple zero immediately. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, kill or harm them. Bites can occur when people try to kill snakes.

A MEETING of the State Government agencies leading the campaign against the highly invasive Hawkweed species is taking place at Falls Creek on 7 and 8 November. Three types of hawkweed occur in Australia, two of which are only found in the Falls Creek area. The Victorian Government is working towards the eradication of all hawkweeds from Victoria. Scientists, land mangers and weed ecologists from Victoria, Tasmania and NSW will gather to share information and research developments on Hawkweed control. The group formed in 2011 to cooperate on hawkweed control across the three states. It’s not known how the

three species of hawkweeds in Australia arrived, but one may have been introduced into the Alps region on imported ski run equipment. Another is likely to have been imported as a garden plant. In New Zealand, where 10 species occur, their rampant spread has destroyed millions of hectares of native vegetation and made grazing land virtually unusable. Hawkweeds release chemicals into the soil that inhibit the growth of other plants, and thus take over existing vegetation. They dramatically reduce pasture productivity, and destroy native animal habitats. Parks Victoria’s Charlie Pascoe says Australian conditions suit this aggressive weed. “Hawkweeds can tolerate

almost any growing condition; gravel or acidic soils, full sun, part shade, frost or snow, so they are very likely to be highly invasive both here in Victoria and in NSW and Tasmania,” he said. “There’s been good progress towards the eradication of hawkweeds at Falls Creek, despite a recent setback with the discovery of a new species. Meeting at the start of the control season will allow us to share information about the two species not known from other states. “We will be sharing information on strategies for surveillance and monitoring, improved detection techniques, including the use of sniffer dogs, and trials of different chemicals to maximise eradication.

Fetching the hoverboard MORE than three-quarters of Australians believe scientists have confirmed there is life on other planets, and more than half believe “Back to the Future” style hoverboards have been invented. These were just some of the conclusions of a Fact of Fiction survey*, independently compiled in 2011 behalf of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). The survey asked respondents if science fiction theories such as time travel and invisibility cloaks were true or false, and which inventions they would most like to see in the future. The results were often surprising, and confirmed that the lines between people’s perceptions of science fiction and science fact were indeed blurred.

That said, Australians still often compare well with others. For example, only seven per cent of Australians surveyed (incorrectly) believed time travel was possible, comparing well to a study for Birmingham Science City that found 30 per cent of British people believed it. In Tasmania, 58 per cent of those surveyed incorrectly believed reverse cryonics was possible, while 31 per cent of Queenslanders bucked a national trend and correctly answered that microscopic life on other planets was not a known fact. Rod Dowler is from ANSTO, which runs Australia’s only nuclear research reactor at Lucas Heights in the South of Sydney. He will be at Charles Sturt Uni-

versity - Albury Campus on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 November to conduct free Fact or Fiction events. It is suitable for people aged 8 and up. Bookings are essential. “I think it’s fair to say some Australians watch a little too much Dr Who and too little Dr Karl,” Mr Dowler said. He’d know because he works with some of the brightest minds in Australia. Around one-third of the 1200 employees at ANSTO have PHDs. “ANSTO’s Fact or Fiction events are highly entertaining and educational, and use pop-culture to interest kids in science,” Mr Dowler said. “Science areas that are explored include everything from teleporting to time travel, invisibility, immortality,

Reaction from the gut BY KRYSTEN MANUEL “WHAT they wanted was something that talked about their passion – you have to trust your instincts when you’re working, but also to provoke and make that connection to the audience so they get a really visceral reaction to the work rather than intellectualising or asking too many questions,” Art and design teacher at Albury TAFE Susan Brophy said. “It’s when they initially see it and they get that ‘gut reaction,’ whatever that might be.” The advanced diploma in visual arts students from Riverina Institute of TAFE Albury Campus are putting on one final, spectacular art show at GIGS Art Gallery, with opening night this Friday. But Ms Brophy insists it’s not the culmination of their years of hard work, but the continuation of talent, or the start of something new. “Everything is part of a process, so you don’t really get to an end,” she said. “There is often an object – maybe it’s a painting or sculpture or something like that, but it’s never really the end of a process, it’s usually the start of something new. “These students have been working through their ideas and processes this year and hopefully by the time they leave it’s not the end, they feel like they’re ready to launch out and keep developing.” The students are no strangers to the processes involved with an exhibition, with their most recent show in Wagga Wagga hailed a great success.

light sabres, intelligent metals, terraforming climates and telekinesis.” “How can you clear the cosmic haze and determine what’s fact or fiction? “By attending on Thursday - we’ll have a big screen experience where the world of popular sci-fi film collides with cutting edge science.” During the 90-minute Fact or Fiction show, the audience watches clips of classic sci-fi hits before individually voting with hand-held devices on whether the technology featured is actual science fact or pure science fiction. Once the audience voting has been locked in, an ANSTO scientist will critique the science featured in the film and provide the answer.

Other results from respondents included: 76 per cent wrongly believe microscopic life has been discovered on other planets; 44 per cent correctly believe flying cars exist; 42 per cent incorrectly believe in reverse cryonics; and 28 per cent weren’t aware that it is possible to grow an eye in a dish. Fact or Fiction in Albury Wodonga is from 7pm to 8.30pm Thursday 7 November at CD Blake Theatre, Building 751, Room 104, Charles Sturt University. Bookings are essential: factorfiction-albury.eventbrite.com.au For more information: (02) 9717 3090.

Artist Zoe Manuel’s stunning works will be featuring in the opening exhibition – Gut Reaction. But of course, there’s always room for experience. Audiences can expect to see a wide variety of textures, mediums and subject matter, all expressing the individuality of each student. “There’s a real diversity of work,” Ms Brophy said. “Some comes from quite a traditional landscape origin and other work that’s influenced by street art, text, mixed media and everything in between.

“I think they’ve done a really good job and that whole thing about diversity is fantastic. There’s not one real thing coming out of the group, they’ve all been pursuing their different areas and I think they should all be proud of what they’ve done.” Gut Reaction is available to the public top view from 6-17 November at GIGS Fine Art Gallery from 10am-4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Opening night is Friday 8 November, 6-8pm. Call 6021 3073 for details.

Social Seen Like mother, like son By KRYSTEN MANUEL AN old television favourite came to life on stage at The Cube last week – Mother and Son. Staged by the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, the hilarious performance was comprised of three episodes from the multiple Logie Award-winning Australian television sitcom, Mother and Son, produced by the ABC from 1984 to 1994. The original show starred Ruth Cracknell, Garry McDonald, Henri Szeps and Judy Morris and was created and written by Geoffrey Atherden. The plot of Mother and Son addresses the problems of ageing and caring for an elderly parent with an often sharp-edged humour – which had the audience in stitches. Maggie Beare and her son Arthur’s relationship was presented with a fascinating complexity by well-known local actors Jenny Cartledge and Leon Walsh. Peter Uniacke portrayed Robert Beare and Katherine Chamberlain is Liz Beare. Other cast members included George Pender, Peta McGrath, Maria Aivaliotis, Joseph Thomsen and Judy Walsh. Director, Lorraine Monshing, had previously directed a production of Mother and Son for Wangaratta Players.

Letters Sophie’s shout-out A BIG thankyou for all the support and best wishes that I and my family have received from fellow North East locals. It has come to my attention that some people have been trying to contact me and are unsure how to do so. My details are: mirabellasophie@gmail.com or PO Box 797 Wangaratta 3677. For anyone wanting to get in touch with me please feel free to use the details above or say g’day of you see me in the street. Sophie Mirabella, Wangaratta East.

Move them on I APPLAUD the sentiments of the residents living in the vicinity of the fertility clinic, and of Dr Rebecca McGowan. It is extraordinary that the demonstrators can cause innocent people to feel embarrassed and ashamed! Surely there must be some ancient law, that will provide in some way for these demonstrators to be moved away, far far away. I can’t help thinking that if there were three or four motorcyclists seated outside the clinic that they would very soon be asked to leave, so why is it that the Albury City Council, the police, anyone (starting to panic to think that these dreadful people may be outside the clinic forever because of some unbelievable belief that God would want it?). The residents have purchased, and cannot enjoy, their homes in a beautiful, quiet area because of the people outside the clinic who have little else to do (what a strange excuse for filling in time). My sympathy is also very much with those who attend, and who work, at the clinic - you, and the residents, and Dr McGowan, there are hundreds of citizens who wish you well, pay you their respect, and who would like to see the end of the demonstrators’ disgusting behaviour. Wendy Cole, Albury.

Poet defends music ‘BAND gets boot’ (NewsWeekly, page 1, 23 October 2013). They have no ear for music They have no eye for charm

Email your letter to: newsdesk@awnw.com.au They don’t know what they’re doing If Wodonga Citizens Band they harm For in this land of milk and honey And if their music disappears Who will we blame for grief and tears? They don’t get paid, they’re volunteers. So get behind the band and say What gives council the right to give away The Wodonga Citizens Band I say Doreen Spalding, Albury.

God’s law ‘RESPECT the rules’ (NewsWeekly, page 9). God’s rules are more important than man’s rules. ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ The qualified counsellors outside the Englehardt Street Clinic see fit to advise those seeking abortions on the harm done to the person on having an abortion (breast cancer for one) and, as they’re not mind readers they approach all. The lack of respect for God’s rules only leads a nation to damnation. The giving or donors who give blood are lifegiving people. Abortion is death. Doreen Spalding, Albury.

Coming together WODONGA Citizens Band is not looking for council to build new premises for the band. Over the past year the band has come together with the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, the Men’s Shed, a local business and another community group that at this stage has not been publicly announced. A development concept for a community arts and entertainment facility has been prepared, incorporating a home for each group and rehearsal space for various music interests and start-up music groups, publicly available meeting rooms and music tuition rooms and a 200-seat auditorium. Council support is sought in regard to strategic planning and advocacy for the arts and entertainment facility. The Wodonga Citizens Band recognises that Wodonga Council does not have

financial resources in abundance and is not seeking monetary contribution from the council. The proposal is to establish a fully not-forprofit overarching group comprising the four community organisations to independently manage and operate the new arts and entertainment facility. The proposal intends and is structured to achieve full operational self-sufficiency. In addition to the operational functionality needs of the involved groups, in order that the operational self-sufficiency can be achieved it is critical that the location be within the central activity area. With community and State Government support the financial resources to construct the facility can be achieved, provided that land purchase is not required. Therefore obtaining a lease or committee of management status over an appropriate crown or government land site is a necessary first step. Philanthropic funding is reliant on the site being held and managed by the not-forprofit group. Council support is sought in securing a central activity area government land site to be held and managed by the not-for-profit group. The council support in this regard is for strategic planning to allow the proposal as part of the broader central activity area plan and in supporting the group application for State Government development funding as a contribution to the overall building costs. The Wodonga Citizens Band, Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, Men’s Shed and the other as yet publicly not released not-for-profit group in association with the local business, has undertaken substantial work in developing the proposal for a community based arts and entertainment facility that will work to compliment and not compete with The Cube and provide an accessible low-cost facility. The building will not only house the principle not-for-profit groups but will create spaces for emerging musical groups to rehearse, for various other community groups to meet, rehearsal space for school theatre and events and most importantly space for music tuition. This is an opportunity for the future being presented by the change occurring in the central activity area of Wodonga. We seek council and

community support to make the arts and entertainment centre in Wodonga a reality. Committee of the Wodonga Citizens Band.

Warning over hidden fire risk THE DEPI is offering a timely warning about the fire risk posed by badly maintained or worn out hay balers. DEPI pasture and fodder conservation specialist Frank Mickan said each year there are many incidents of hay stack fires in sheds and in paddocks and the loss of outside haystacks, sheds and equipment. “However, not so commonly known is there are also many hay baler fires which start during every hay harvest,” Mr Mickan said. “A recent meeting with a passionate CFA member and farmer, and other farmers, provided many insights the agribusiness community should know. “The CFA annually attends

several baler fires in Victoria, many of which could have been avoided or, at least, ended with much reduced damage. “Not only are balers often burnt in these fires but sometimes the tractor is also partly or completely destroyed – neither cheap pieces of machinery. “No doubt there are other unreported costs such as paddock fires caused by the baler fire spreading into nearby windrows and surrounding dry paddocks, or stock losses. “There is always the prospect of serious burns to the operator as well as nutrition loss in feed through delays replacing the burnt out baler, especially if rain occurs in the meantime.” Most baler and tractor fires are caused by over-heating of

usually worn bearings and they are often not noticed until the bale and baler are well alight. It is compulsory by law for all tractors to have a water container with a minimum nine litre capacity attached to the tractor during the fire restriction period. This can be either a pressurised water extinguisher or a knapsack. “Unfortunately, this law is poorly enforced but is a nobrainer when operating hot equipment in hot dry, windy conditions in very dry flammable grass,” Mr Mickan said. “It can potentially save very expensive machinery from burning and fire from spreading.”

New way to survive bushfires NSW residents now have another way to make a bushfire survival plan with the launch of a new smartphone application. Police and Emergency Services Minister Michael Gallacher said the NSW Rural Fire Service’s MyFirePlan app was available through the Apple app and Google Play stores. “We have seen in recent weeks the devastating effect bushfires can have on people, properties and communities,” Mr Gallacher said. “We have also seen how important it is to be prepared, and

Wednesday, 6 November, 2013 Page 9

www.awnw.com.au

to have a plan for what to do during a fire. “Having a plan and taking decisive action can make the difference in surviving a bushfire.” The MyFirePlan app provides general preparation advice including steps to take around the home, along with fill-in plans which will help you make the decision on staying and defending a prepared property, or leaving early. The app gives the user the ability to share their plan with family and friends, and print it

off so it can be easily accessed by family members. NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the MyFirePlan app complemented the existing Bush Fire Survival Plan which was available from local Fire Control Centres or through the NSW RFS website. “We know during a bush fire one of the first things people take is their mobile phone and this puts important safety information right at their fingertips,” Mr Fitzsimmons said.

Foot & Leg Facts with Dr Marni Gray, Sports Podiatrist

Pain in the foot SOME common observations or concerns with regards to children’s feet and legs include flat feet, growing pains and shin pain. These are often of great concern to parents so warrant clarification. It’s a common misconception that if children have an appearance of flat feet it’s cause for concern. This is not always the case. The presence of flexible flat feet in children is usually painless and perfectly normal in many cases. In very young children, the flat pad in the arch of the foot may give the appearance of a flat foot but this is often not the case. The important thing to understand is that flat feet are not something parents should worry about unless there are pain or balance issues. Children with diagnosed flat foot deformity will have instability in the foot and therefore foot, arch, heel or ankle pain. Excessive rolling in of the ankles often leads to back, hip, knee or leg pain. If a child regularly complains of pain and it’s interfering with normal play and leading to inactivity it should always be investigated by a podiatrist experienced with assessing and treating musculoskeletal issues, ideally a sports podiatrist. Children can also have the appearance of intoeing (‘pigeon-toed’) or out-toeing (‘duck feet’). This may affect the capacity of the child to run, jump or balance well. These issues may be assisted during the developmental years and can be thoroughly checked by a sports podiatrist. Non-specific growing pains in children and teenagers is also a common complaint, often causing deep ache-like leg pain during the night. Specific inflammatory growing pains can be evident in the heel or at the knee. These are often due to overstrain of the growth plates of growing bones, particularly in very active kids. In such cases, physical activity should be reduced and a

Planet Ark founded National Recycling Week as a community education campaign in 1996 with the aim or bringing a national focus to recycling and minimising waste. Since then, recycling items like paper, printer cartridges, steel cans, beverage containers and other packaging types has become second nature to Australians. However, as we revolutionalise the range of materials and the way we recycle them, more education is necessary about what to

Beethoven’s classic THE Orpheus Piano Trio is bringing a proven crowd-pleasing performance to the region with Beethoven’s famous Ghost Trio, Debussy’s Piano Trio in G major L. 3 and Brahms’ popular Piano Trio in B major. “Sam and I played Beethoven’s Ghost Trio back in 1999 but we haven’t done it with the Orpheus Trio so it was one we thought would be great to revisit,” Orpheus Trio pianist Helena Kernaghan said. “It’s an absolute classic of the repertoire, one that people who like classical and particularly Beethoven’s music will love.” The Orpheus Piano Trio performances were well received by large crowds at venues in Albury and Castlemaine in 2012. They also performed at Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane Jazz Club for the 2012 William Poskitt Memorial Fund-raiser concert. The Orpheus Piano Trio formed in early 2012. Helena Kernaghan and Kaori Sparks (violin) are local musicians who enjoy the challenge of sustaining an active performing career alongside a busy teaching load. WITH GEOFF HABERECHT OF TRU HIFI

Who’s who at the hifi show TWO weeks ago the annual hifi show was presented in Melbourne and an observation from this show was the type of person that generally made up the bulk of the attendees. Most would expect the younger group of people still with their hearing fully intact. With so much new technology and technology that has improved traditional audio products a show of this magnitude would be a must-see. The hifi show was a resounding success lifting the crowd by over a third on the previous year – most were male and over 50 years of age. A common comment I often hear in our store is ‘I don’t think I will invest in music like I once did because I do not hear the benefit from the investment.’ A decision to purchase a budget single box stereo or worse still home theatre system quickly tells you that you’re right – music enjoyment is not what it used to be. The evolution of premium audio and the affordability changes has allowed for a higher standard listening level available to many more. The comment from the converted is ‘yes your hearing has diminished however to compensate you require a higher level of performance so your ears will believe it sounds just as good or better than the old one when it was new.’ The evidence of this awareness in the older generation was noticeable at the hifi show, it is a pity that the highly marketed brands that pitch to the youth of the market with basic audio standards are robbing them of a level of apprecia-

Strap in – the Screaming Jets are back on the Border for one night before the release of their new album in 2014.

Jets keep on screaming STRAIGHT from the days of smokefilled pubs, packed with sweaty fans covered in 15 different types of alcohol, with pure joy on their faces and fists pumping the air – The Screaming Jets are back. With an album on the way and 25th anniversary celebrations on the 2014 horizon, now is the perfect time to give fans their fix. Set to rock the Kinross, frontman Dave Gleeson took some time to speak with NewsWeekly about the year ahead, their energetic (to say the least) reputation and the gritty magic of playing in pubs. NW: Let’s talk about the new album – when is that coming out? DG: We were going to do a collection of the covers we’ve been doing over the years but we decided not to do that. We are the Screaming Jets and as much as we enjoy playing covers, we decided – being the 25th anniversary coming up next year – we’ll record a brand-new album and get it ready for release next year. Because I was so busy following my extra-curricular activities, I charged Paul Woseen our bass player with writing the whole thing. I’ve been looking forward to doing it that way because there can be times where you enjoy writing a whole bunch of songs but the cohesion might not be there and that can lead to fighting with band members. Obviously once we all

get in there and start playing the songs become Screaming Jets songs, but I just thought it would be nice to have a cohesive attack this time, you never know what’s going to work in this funny old world. NW: Everyone knows that you guys go off on stage, do you find as you get older that energy dwindles a little or do you just get better with time? DG: Once I get on the stage I get in the zone and I’ll see the other boys at the end of the two hours. I reckon even if I’m 80 and I get up in front of that crowd it’s still going to make me do crazy stuff – I hope so anyway. My favourite bands have always had high energy – Midnight Oil, The Angels, INXS, all those Australian pub bands, the one thing that sets them apart from bands of the same era is that same energy. I always say ‘it’s a rock and roll show, it’s not for the faint-hearted, it’s not for the prim and proper, there’s going to be sweat and spit, and hopefully not but there might be some vomit and a bit of blood, and there will definitely be swearing.’ It’s just one of those things that come with a pub rock show and we’re proud to carry on that tradition. It’s a two-pronged attack – one is you have to keep the crowd interested and keep their eyes following what you’re doing. And the other thing is it’s very hard to hit a moving target, so if someone isn’t enjoying the show they’re go-

Box office

ing to have their work cut out for them hitting me with something. A bloke threw something at me the other night up in Hamilton Island. It was funny – it was a very hot night and there was a girl pretending to flash her ... bosoms, we were all just taking it in good fun, and a bouncer comes over and throws her out. About 10 minutes later a guy throws a can at my head and the bouncer is nowhere to be seen! I’m like ‘hang on mate, if you’re bouncers what you need to do is throw out the people throwing stuff and the people who are interacting with the band, they can stay for the fun part of the show.’ NW: The Screaming Jets are a bit of a dying breed when it comes to that sort of hard energy don’t you think? DG: Yeah, it’s all gone a bit soft. What you’ll find is that even bands like Boom Crash Opera and INXS, bands who had keyboards and had a little bit more of a lighter flavour, when they would get into the pubs and clubs it would become more raucous just because of the atmosphere. It would get a harder edge to it and you’d notice it as albums went by. But because bands don’t get the opportunity to play lots of gigs, play pubs, grow that local on-ground support, you often find the music stays quite stagnant and a little bit light in the loafers, as we say. The Screaming Jets are playing at the Kinross Woolshed this Friday, 8 November. Call 02 6043 1155 for bookings and details.

Thor found in the ether By KRYSTEN MANUAL DURATION: 112 minutes STARRING: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins

DIRECTOR: Alan Taylor HAVING not seen Thor or Marvel’s The Avengers, this film is surprisingly satisfying. For those who have seen the other two, I imagine it measures up as a hearty course in the Thor degustation. The film picks up where Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is presented to the King (Hopkins) and thrown into the dungeons, while his brother, Thor, is left to finish bringing order to the nine realms.

Due to a cosmic aligning of the planets, a kind of vortex is formed allowing passage through to other worlds – enter Jane Foster (Portman). Jane finds her way to one of the ports and is sucked into another world where an ancient force, ether, is being kept. The ether finds its way into Jane, waking up Malekeith - leader of an ancient race of elves who want nothing more than to plunge the realms back into darkness. Between Thor, Jane, Loki and a mismatched bunch of helpers, the task of saving nine worlds is upon them, but can Thor trust Loki with this imperative mission? Between superb special effects, a solid story-line and a fantastic line-up

of actors, Thor: The Dark World is very well executed. Engaging, romantic and actually quite funny in places, audiences of all tastes will enjoy this one. My only criticisms are of the script. There’s a fine line between being funny and being lame, and Jane happened to fall on the wrong side of that line several times throughout the film. Also, playing catch-up to the physics of the realms wasn’t overly enjoyable. Even those who had seen the first two films didn’t understand how Thor and Jane could suddenly work out several times over how do destroy the ether and so on.

How fluoridation can help THIS year has seen a great deal of discussion on fluoride, especially with new research emerging on the benefits of drinking fluoridated water. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) notes the latest release of significant research further supports the beneficial effects of fluoridation which was previously only shown in children, but now shows the beneficial effects on adult populations. The release of the article, ‘Effects of Fluoridated Drinking Water on Dental Caries in Australian Adults’, in the Journal of Dental Research, shows that Australian adults with a 75 per cent lifetime exposure to water fluoridation have significantly reduced caries experience when compared with those with a 25 per cent lifetime exposure. This reduction has occurred in adult Australians born in both the pre- and post-fluoridation generation. The significance of this is that the introduction of water fluoridation to a community will benefit all residents, not only those who grow up drinking fluoridated water. ADA President Dr Karin Alexander welcomed the findings. “Reducing the frequency of dental decay and disease is in everybody’s interests,” he said. “We hope that all levels of government, and especially those local councils that are deciding whether to

continue the fluoridation of their water supplies, seriously consider this latest scientific research report,” Dr Alexander said. Based on the 2004-2006 Australian National Survey of Oral Health these findings of the research provide further evidence to support the ADA’s oral health improvement campaign to

increase the extent of fluoridation in Australia. “The ADA continues to be dismayed with the scaremongering from fringe groups that lack consideration of the national and international scientific evidence such as that outlined in the recently published report of the significant benefits for dental health that

occurs from the fluoridation of water supplies,” he said. “The ADA warns that removing fluoride from drinking water will cost the community more in the form of higher incidence of dental decay. “Our already under-resourced public dental sectors will come under more pressure.”

Over 55s ..... Life starts Now! Harnessing mature talent for nation O’Neill told its annual Western Australia State Convention today. He said that National Seniors’ research had shown there were 7.3 million people in Australia aged over 50 in 2012 but the number would jump to 10.5 million by 2030. By that date, retirees over 65 will make up 33 out of every 100 people aged 15+ but how the needs of older people will be met will depend on how they are valued now - or not valued, he said.

Seniors face the crunch SOME seniors are no longer spending money on medical costs and public transport as they grapple to cover the basic essentials, a new report out today reveals. More than half a million low-income senior households are spending on average fourfifths of their incomes on essentials such as water, gas, insurance, medical services and rates – all of which have risen by more than double the inflation rate over the past five years. As a result, 15 per cent of households – mostly pensioner households – are no longer spending any money on medical fees, public transport, eating out, clothing, cigarettes and alcohol, or car and home maintenance. The report also found the number of senior households reliant on the pension grew by

55,000 (6.5 per cent) between 2006 and 2011 as a result of more baby boomers reaching age 65. The findings were released in the National Seniors Australia Productive Ageing Centre’s report, ’A squeeze on spending? An update on household living costs for senior Australians’. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said some of the findings from today’s report were alarming. “This study looked at household cost of living pressures affecting the over 50s and examined the changes in spending behaviour caused by higher prices in essential items,” Mr O’Neill said. “A very worrying trend is the fact that some seniors may not be receiving health care when they need it because they

have been forced to cut their spending. “We are also seeing an increase in low-income seniors living in rental houses, making them extremely vulnerable to the ups and downs of the housing market’s rent cycle.” The report found the biggest price increase was for electricity, which rose by 83 per cent more than six times the overall rate of inflation. In 2011, almost a quarter of a million (245,000) senior households said they had been unable to pay their utility (electricity, gas or telephone) bills on time and the proportion of pensioners unable to pay their utilities bills rose by 13 per cent over five years. Over the five years to March 2013, the majority of the top 10 price rises were for essential household goods or services.

Three years ago, around one quarter of the federal budget was directed towards health, aged care and age-related pensions - a proportion expected to increase significantly with the shift in population. “If the economy is to keep growing and pensions and welfare are to keep pace with inflation, we need to make the most of all our resources, including the experience and talents of mature people - many of whom want to, or need to, remain in the workforce,” Mr O’Neill said.

“Government and society as a whole can not only make it possible for these people to obtain work and stay in jobs for longer, but also there should be a national debate about bringing down workplace barriers and enabling older people to provide for their own retirements. “We may also need to discuss the benefits and entitlements which older people now receive and which they can reasonably expect in the future.”

AUSTRALIA’S willingness to harness the wealth of talent in older Australians will keep them in the workforce longer and enable them to help provide for the secure retirements they deserve, National Seniors Australia says. While the ageing population presents its own set of challenges, they should not overshadow opportunities for employment for over 50s and perhaps a re-evaluation of their needs and expectations, National Seniors chief executive Michael

polished floorboards leading through the house. To your left is the master bedroom – king size with bay window and generous walk-in robe. Off the bedroom is the luxurious ensuite – a couples delight with his and hers vanity, classy double shower and deep bath to soak away the aches and pains of the day. The remaining bedrooms are also situated at the front section of the house, all queen size, all offering fantastic storage with built-in robes, and all complete with ceiling fans.

Walking along the wide hallway, the organiser of the house will be delighted with the amount of storage this property has to offer behind several well concealed sliding doors. The main bathroom follows the theme of the home, being spacious and modern, with separate toilet for extra convenience. Offering three separate living areas, every member of the family will be pleased. The open plan living, dining and kitchen areas ensure the family can comfortably go about their business

while interacting as families do – perfect for young children. The kitchen features Omega appliances – 900mm gas cooktop and oven, two-pack kitchen and walk-in pantry. The second living area could be used as a formal lounge or dining area, with great lighting and a view out to the entertaining area. The final living area is almost a mirror image of the formal lounge and lends itself to a rumpus room that will keep the kids happy for hours. Outside, the entertainment area is

one of the main features of this impressive home. Sheltered under an exceptionally high roof, this area is perfect for the outdoorsy type, the entertainer and the avid cook thanks to a large open fireplace, pizza oven, barbecue, outdoor ceiling fan, speakers and television point. Further into the backyard you will find a chook pen and large concrete floor shed with watertank and storage room - perfect for tradies, those working from home or even those with a decent hobby. This exquisite home is a must-see.

Cooling off matters RESIDENTIAL private sales still comprise 70-80 per cent of all residential sales, but it’s important to remember they are subject to cooling off periods. This means that the buyer has three clear business days to ‘cool off’ or reconsider their offer. This begins the day after the buyer has signed the contract. Weekends and state-wide public holidays aren’t taken into account during the cooling off period. Cooling off is a buyer’s right and is mandated by legislation. The purchase can’t be finalised until this period expires. However, if buyers do change their mind and cool off, they must give written notice to the seller or their agent. Buyers will also lose $100 or 0.2 per cent of the purchase price from their deposit, whichever is greater. This is a form of compensation for the seller.

For example, if a buyer signs a contract at $650,000 and pays a 10 per cent deposit, the seller is entitled to keep $1,300 if cooling off occurs. Sellers obviously face some uncertainty during the three days of the cooling off period as to whether the sale will go ahead. Cooling off begins when the buyer signs the contract, not when it’s signed by both parties. There are some exceptions to the cooling off period. It doesn’t apply, for example, if the property is purchased within three clear business days before or after a public auction. Becoming aware of the cooling off period allows both parties to think carefully about the implications of real estate purchase. For further information, visit www.reiv.com.au

Growth in major centres SEPTEMBER QUARTER MEDIANS – REGIONAL UPDATE WHILE the median price of a house in regional Victoria rose only slightly in the September quarter, major centres showed stronger growth. Buyers are still attracted to the key regional centres of Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Clearance rates averaged more than 80 per cent in all three centres this quarter. The median house price rose by 0.8 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms to $308,000 from a revised $305,500 in the June quarter. Geelong, Ballarat, and Ben-

digo have outperformed the broader regional market and remain at their peak prices after growth in this quarter. Geelong’s house price increased the most out of the three main centres with a 3.8 per cent increase in the quarter to $405,000. Ballarat recorded a more moderate increase of 1.8 per cent to $290,000 while Bendigo recorded a 1.6 per cent increase $315,000. Interest rates remain low and buyers are taking advantage of this with the chances of a further rate cut this year becoming less and less likely. There have also been a number of positive indicators in the state which has increased

demand, primarily in the metropolitan market. We are also starting to see this demand have some flow-on effects into the major regional centres, particularly Geelong with its proximity to the metropolitan market. Unlike the strong improvement in the metropolitan market, the housing market in regional Victoria has moved more slowly. The average days on market for a private sale in regional Victoria has increased by three days in September quarter to 111 days in comparison to the previous quarter. To find out more about the September quarter medians, visit www.reiv.com.au

Local Sport Murray Greys do it their way By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE annual Murray Grey Veteran Golfers (MGVG) Seniors Classic is quickly approaching, with organisers encouraging people to sign up before they miss out. “On the two days we have full fields and the last two years we’ve had waiting lists, so we’ll hit off a minimum of 128 people each day,” Murray Grey Vets vice president Peter Hamilton said. “We have in excess of 100 entries already for this year. “People should get their name down very quickly - it will fill up soon.” The popularity of the day has been attributed to several factors - sponsorship, advertising and enviable prizes, not to mention the fantastic atmosphere.

“We’re a very active club and the advertising and promotion we do gets to a lot of people. We send out invitations to about 40 other clubs in the district,” Mr Hamilton said. “The level of sponsorship and prizes we have is second to none in the district, our major sponsors are Alatalo and they have been for a number of years now. It’s becoming a renowned golfing event in the district golfing calendar.” This year’s prizes include seven nights’ accommodation at Horizons Golf Resort, two packages at Lake Hume for two nights and $100 meal voucher worth in excess of $400, membership to the Accor Group worth $300, golf bags, Peards Garden World vouchers, landscaping worth $400 and raffles on the day. The Seniors Classic follows

a tournament format and includes lunch on both days. “On the Monday everyone playing gets an orange juice and sandwiches for lunch prior to hitting off at 12pm,” Mr Hamilton said. “On Tuesday we hit off at 8am and have a sit-down lunch with the presentations.” Money raised on the day will go towards sponsoring the junior golf as well as running the MGVG for the next year. “The important thing is that we sponsor the junior golf and have a lot to do with promoting it and running tournaments during the year,” Mr Hamilton said. The tournament is on 18 and 19 November, with entries closing on 8 November. Entrants must be over 50 years of age. Entry forms are available from the Thurgoona Golf Club Pro Shop.

CORPORATE Day at the Wodonga and District Turf Club last Friday was well supported by trainers far and wide as well as the Border community, general manager Tom O’Connor said. “For a Friday race meeting, there were a lot of people who took the opportunity to come in later in the afternoon and enjoy the members bar, which worked really well for the club – throwing the gates open and encouraging people to come and have a look at our members facility,” Mr O’Connor said. “The atmosphere in and around that area was great. “We also had good support from the trainers throughout southern NSW and country Victoria and Melbourne.” Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody managed a double win on the

day with Love Field and Stellarized taking out races two and four. “Locally Peter Maher had a second with Brigadoon Mist which ran really well behind a Peter Moody horse and Brian Cox had a winner in the last race with Sahara Night. “Jockey-wise we had Linda Meech racing and she had a couple of winners for the day.” Winners for each of the eight races, in order, were Oh My Rocket, Love Field, Magic Bella, Stellarized, Armona, Twin Spires, Capriev and Sahara Night. “The club is really looking forward to everyone getting behind its Telstra Business Centre Gold Cup on 1 December,” Mr O’Connor said. “There’s plenty of interest with marquee packages being booked in at the moment, so get in quick because it’s filling up!”
