Retailers fight over land

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CITY Hall and national retail giants are at loggerheads over planning and development rules for a proposed Armstrong Creek Town Centre.

A four-day state planning panel hearing is hearing arguments on planning amendment 267 from high-powered legal teams for various parties including Coles and Woolworths.

The parties have assembled an

Legal battle to rewrite Armstrong Creek plan array of planning, retail and engineering experts to argue the case.

The town centre precinct is 92 hectares bounded by Surf Coast Hwy and Boundary, Barwarre and Burvilles Rds. In documents tendered to the panel, the parties are arguing over caps on retail space, the level of developer contributions and restrictive design guidelines.

Acting for Woolworths, MacroPlan Dimasi managing director of retail Tony Dimasi said restrictive design guidelines meant the retail hub was “substantially� more likely to fail. “The design guidelines propose a highly prescriptive and inappropriate approach to the layout and design of the retail floor space,� Mr Dimasi said.

He argued the design guidelines had “little or no regard for critical elements, in particular customer comfort and convenience and economic viability�.

Imposing a shop floor-space cap of 35,000sqm, down from 40,000sqm, was “arbitrary, subjective and unduly restrictive� without any “material benefit� to other shopping centres, he said.

“It will, however, impose an unnecessary restriction on the Armstrong Creek retail core and additional costs and inconvenience for the developers at a future date.�

URBIS associate director and town planner Sarah Walbank said the amendment “inappropriately prohibits a number of land uses�.

“The design guidelines should be amended to provide greater flexibility to facilitate development in the town centre over a period of time.�

Environmental Resources Management Australia partner Stuart McGurn, for Coles, said the proposed design guidelines were “overly prescriptive�.

Experts acting for City Hall said the town centre design represented best-practice planning and urban design.

Advertiser defends ethics amid ACCC investigation

LOCAL police are planning a zero-tolerance to bike safety this summer, according to a senior office.

Bellarine Police Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said Operation Cadel would run from November to January with the aim of reducing cyclist road trauma and increasing bike safety awareness.

Sen Sgt Ferrara said the Bellarine Peninsula was a hotspot for cyclists over summer.

“So far there have been two fatalities in this area, which is two too many,” he said.

The “highly visible” campaign would focus on education and enforcement.

“Bike owners need to check their bikes are roadworthy and their helmets fitted correctly,” he said.

“Wearing bright-coloured clothing, choosing the safest route and ensuring bikes are well lit will go a long way in reducing collisions.”

Sen Sgt Ferrara said police were urging all road users to consider the safety of others, especially at busy times.

“Motorists should ensure they look out for bikes on the road and allow cyclists enough space to ride safely,” he said. “The police will be watching and enforcing the road rules to ensure safety for all.”

GEELONG Advertiser has defended its business practices against allegations of predatory pricing activities.

The Independent revealed last week that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) was investigating claims of cut prices and other kickbacks for real estate agents in Geelong.

Advertiser general manager of commercial Peter Klages issued a statement the following day to media outlets other than the Independent, saying “we strongly believe we have always behaved ethically and lawfully”.

The Advertiser had “always behaved honourably and honestly with its readers and its customers”, he said.

Neither Mr Klages nor News Corp Australia, the Advertiser’s mother company, responded to a list of questions the Independent submitted for comment this week.

The list included questions asking whether the ACCC had approached Advertiser or News Corp Australia executives and, if so, their responses to the ACCC and whether any of its enquiries related to advertisers other than real estate agents.

The ACCC investigation story gained national traction, with reports in The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Financial Review.

Residents vow to fight chemical storage plan

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN NORTH Geelong residents plan to fight a legal opinion allowing chemical storage operations to resume on a site in Roseneath St. The residents claim the site’s existing use rights were extinguished because of a two-year break in the use of the site for chemical storage and blending.

Residents’ spokesperson Anna Michalik said the nature of the area had changed significantly in the intervening two years.

“Since September 2011 the land has been vacant except for an existing decommissioned tank farm, with one tank already removed and some of the dilapidated infrastructure removed.”

Ms Michalik said the decision to allow chemical storage and mixing on the site flew in the face of council and State Government proposals to develop residential areas in the northern suburbs.

“We agree with the Planning Minister (Matthew Guy) that North Geelong must become more populated,” she said.

“So why would council allow for a dangerous, toxic goods store and blending industry a couple of kilometres from the CBD, alongside residential and light industrial businesses and the substantial new Geelong Golf Club residential redevelopment?”

Ms Michalik said the site should be remediated and turned into a multi-

level car park for extra Melbourne commuters from North Geelong Railway Station and Arena patrons.

Residents believed the minister had the power to intervene because North Geelong could be classed as a growth area, she said.

Geelong MP Ian Trezise raised the issue in State Parliament last week, calling on Mr Guy to “urgently review laws relating to existing use rights”.

“Of grave concern to the residents is the fact that under the Planning and Environment Act the company has, according to council officers, the right to recommence operations without any form of approval due to the existing use rights clause in the act.

“It is my strong opinion and, I can

assure the minister, the strong opinion of local residents that it is wrong that such a right exists.

“It is morally wrong that a blanket existing use right should enable closed down facilities such as the one in Roseneath St the automatic right to reopen as proposed with no questions asked.”

A spokesperson for Mr Guy said Mr Tresize raised reasonable concerns.

“However, it should be noted the minister is not the responsible planning authority for this site. That aside, the minister is happy to work with Geelong’s council and all involved parties to find a sensible outcome on this issue.”

Police are prepairing a report for the coroner but said the fire, in Beulah St around midday Tuesday, was not suspicious.

$65m project A $65 MILLION redevelopment of a former St Mary’s school site for apartments and social housing will provide central Geelong with a shot in the arm, according to Premier Denis Napthine.

He said the project would “contribute to the revitalisation of the CBD with increased residential living” while also providing new health services.

Women’s life A NEW all-female committee has begun advising Geelong’s council on “women’s participation, representation and leadership in community life”.

Interim chair Cr Jan Farrell said the Women in Community Life Advisory Committee would highlight “barriers to women’s participation in civic and political life”.

Cats science GEELONG Cats has appointed a “head of sport science and sport medicine”.

Cats general manager Neil Balme said Peter Stanton had a “great track record in elite sport”, including 10 years at Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Beach dump STATE Government will dump 14,000 cubic metres of sand on Clifton Springs’ beach, MP David Koch has announced.

He said the dump early next year was part of “beach renourishment works” to ensure plenty of sand for beachgoers.

Leisurelink ‘best’ WAURN Ponds’ Leisurelink has won a national award ranking it as Australia’s “best fitness centre”, according to City Hall.

‘Hair apparent’ laughs off businessmen’s attack ad

By NOEL MURPHY POWERFUL backers of Geelong mayoral hopeful Ken Jarvis have mounted a turncoat campaign against his number-one preference, colourful frontrunner Darryn Lyons.

Jarvis supporters Frank Costa, Glynn Harvey and former Geelong mayor Brian Fowler this week ran a full-page newspaper advertisement attacking Mr Lyons’ credentials and praising their preferred candidate.

Mr Lyons laughed off the attack, stressing he wanted to remain positive in his bid to lead Geelong.

But he said it was time Geelong shrugged off the “old grey brigade” to

embrace a youthful, energetic mayoralty.

“The only thing I’ll say is, ‘Why would you want to slag the man you’re preferencing?’”

Mr Costa said local businessmen drafted the advertising to help Mr Jarvis after Mr Lyons “got out of the box early”.

“There’s no way Ken would do anything to push himself ahead of someone else. We did this because we thought Darryn was getting away from Ken.” Mr Costa said he spoke with Mr Lyons to explain “where we’re coming from, our angle”.

Mr Lyons responded by ramping up his increasingly presidential campaign with red-white-and-blue themed advertising, trailer signs, Tshirts, public appearances and a comprehensive online presence.

He also raised his $30 million of personal investments and 180 employees in Geelong, annual spending of $10 million with local suppliers and charity and sponsorship donations worth over $250,000 in the past five years.

Mr Lyons vowed to “do his very best for Geelong” if elected mayor.

Mr Jarvis said he directed his second preference to Mr Lyons on a “sensible political basis”.

“His second preference I considered the best deal I could arrange with any of the candidates.

I understood this would probably mean that either he or I would be successful because I felt we would both appeal to different sections of the electorate.

“This was a purely pragmatic decision.”

Mr Jarvis thanked Mr Costa and others for their support but said he was “not by nature a negative person”.

“I would have preferred that the ads were focused on my perceived abilities and not on their perceived

Otways up for exploration

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN STATE Government has issued a new permit to explore â&#x20AC;&#x153;frackingâ&#x20AC;? opportunities in the Otway basin despite a moratorium on coal seam gas (CSG) extraction, according to shadow resources minister John Lenders.

The Government issued the permit before receiving a report on the future of CSG, Mr Lenders said.

The Independent reported in June the controversial practice could come to Geelong after Lakes Oil revealed it was conducting geological and geophysical studies in the region. Lakes Oilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s permit area, PEP163. stretches from Geelong to Anglesea and along the coast.

Touch-up girl Pat recalls days before digital

By NOEL MURPHY “I CAN make you beautiful,” laughs Leopold’s Pat Norman, an impish grin whipping across her face.

And she can. Or, rather, could.

As a photographic re-toucher and colourist - a trade now lost to digitalisation - Pat removed all manner of blemish and imperfection.

“I could take away your double chins, get rid of the bags under your eyes, pimples, hair that might be sticking out,” she remembered.

Now in her mid-80s, it’s many years since Pat worked with renowned Geelong photographers like John Lockwood, Robert Pockley, Ian Hawthorne and Laurie Wilson.

But she remembers them well, and the craft of making the imperfect perfect.

“If the wedding groom’s trousers were baggy you’d straighten them with a special little knife on the negative by scratching them out,” she said.

“If he had a hired coat and creases in the sleeves you’d scrape them out, too.

Pat said she hand-coloured photographs with cotton wool wrapped around the end of a paintbrush and used bicycle puncture kit solutions to add a bluish tinge to other images – all manner of clever tricks to brighten up faces,

patch scruffy outfits.

“I did baby photos, wedding photos, all sorts of portraits,” she said.

“I don’t know a thing about photography these days. I’d rather go back to how we had it in our days.”

images acquired down the years, some of which she keeps close at hand at Leopold Lodge where she lives after growing up in Chilwell, raising a family in Corio and later moving to Drysdale.

“I’ve had cancer five times and I’ve had two strokes but they can’t kill me,” she laughed.

CORIO abattoir MC Herd has taken its fights against a plans for an adjacent Masters home improvement store to Victoria’s planning tribunal.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) listed on its website a directions hearing on the case last week.

MC Herd has lodged a series of objections to the Masters store, proposed for a site directly across Bacchus Marsh Rd from the long-standing meatworks operation.

The Independent reported in March that MC Herd feared the development could jeopardise its operations.

The objection said MC Herd was a substantial employer, had a large investment in the site and did not propose to relocate.

MC Herd employs about 200 staff and has a 500-metre buffer zone around its operations.

The land earmarked for the Mas-

ters store was rezoned from residential to business to allow the development to proceed.

Victorian planning minister Matthew Guy gave the Masters plan a green light last week.

Geelong’s council has previously said the site was inappropriate for residential development because of the potential impact of the abattoir.

The Independent reported last year that managing director of the region’s last abattoir, Frank Herd, said his business faced a number of attempts to infringe on its buffer zone.

The $13 million Masters development would create 188 jobs during construction and 176 ongoing jobs.

A VCAT directions hearing sets the timetable for the dispute and can consider alternative dispute resolution options.

MC Herd’s acting managing director, Richard Herd, declined to comment on the case when the Independent contacted him this week.

Storages at 91% after ‘good’ rain THE Geelong region’s water storages have reached 91.2 per cent of capacity after generally average or higher rain during October.

Most of the Geelong urban area enjoyed average to above average rain but the Bellarine Peninsula’s totals were generally 10 per cent below.

The situation was better in the Moorabool and Otways catchments with above-average results. Rain in Geelong varied from over 70mm in the city’s south and southwest to little over 40mm in the eastern suburbs.

Geelong’s average for October is 54.7mm. The city’s wettest October was in 1949 with 163.5mm and the driest was in 1967 when only 5.5mm was recorded.

Geelong was also .3 degrees Celsius warmer than the long-term average for 1903 to 2012.

Daily minimums averaged 9 degrees Celsius and maximums were 19C, giving Geelong a mean for October of 14C compared to the average of 13.7C. The hottest day was 20 October when the mercury touched 31.7C. The lowest overnight was on 4 October when 4.7C was recorded.

Interestingly, October’s average minimum, 9C, was the same as that of September, which is normally a colder month. October was also typically windy, with gusts over 60km/h recorded on six days.

On three days winds gusted to 80km/h at Breakwater, leaving a small amount of structural and vegetation damage across the city.

Following in the footsteps of idol Arnold Schwarzenegger, Calum laughingly admits he has been compared to the action movie star.

“Arnie has seen the video, I’m told,” the 23-year-old smiled.

A whirlwind three-week trip taking in supplement promotion contract talks in New York and photo shoots in Miami will finish with a series of movie auditions in Los Angeles.

The photo shoots in Miami are with high-profile fitness industry and body building photographers Ulrich Oehman and Luis Rafael.

Calum’s fifth placing in this year’s Mr Universe competition in Austria as a relative newcomer made the bodybuilding world sit up and take notice.

Calum said he admired the classic bodybuilders of Schwarzenegger’s era more than simply piling on muscle upon muscle.

The 188cm strongman competes at 97kg and maintains his weight around 104kg in the off-season.

“This is all new to me. It’s taken me by surprise but I’m not getting my hopes up about anything,” he said.

CLIFTON SPRINGS ROCK GROYNE UPGRADE AND BEACH RENOURISHMENT The upgrade of the project is to protect the foreshore from erosion caused by wave action, provide access at all stages of the tide and create a recreational beach.

The works will involve the upgrade of an existing rock groyne and renourishment of a section of beach. This will involve considerable truck movements for the importation of rock and sand. It will occur along a section of beach at the western end of Edgewater Drive below the Clifton Springs Golf Club.

The project is due to commence in early November and will take approximately 12-14 weeks to complete. Sections of the foreshore will be closed to the public during construction times. The works have been scheduled during this time to reduce the amount of truck traffic during school times.

Calum has chosen a different career path to his brothers, two of whom are in the Australian Defence Force and another is a paramedic.

One of his older brothers was the first to arouse Calum’s interest in weightlifting, training in a rundown gym in Anglesea as a skinny teenager.

Ms Henderson challenged the Member for Corio to vote “unconditionally” to end the carbon tax.

“If the Labor party was serious about creating and keeping jobs in Geelong, it would vote yes and scrap the carbon tax,” she said.

“Labor and ‘Electricity’ Bill Shorten are arrogantly ignoring the message sent by the Australian people that they don’t want a carbon tax,” Ms Henderson said.

“As Labor itself has conceded, the carbon tax is costing us jobs, damaging Geelong manufacturing and adding to the cost of doing business.”

Training urged for dog owners

By KATE VALLENCE GEELONG should adopt a Canadian program of compulsory training of dog owners, according to a prominent city veterinarian.

Dr Jack Ayerbe raised the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Calgary modelâ&#x20AC;? of pet ownership in response to a new council plan banning dogs off leashes except in specifically signed areas around City of Greater Geelong.

The council plan could also include development of a fenced dog park.

Dr Ayerbe, a regular radio contributor on pet issues, said walking off-leash while under the supervision and control of owners was enriching for dogs.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dogs like humans, like to walk with freedom.â&#x20AC;?

Dr Ayerbe supported some aspects of the council plan but said owner training similar to procedures in Canada would help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The successful Calgary Model from Canada focuses on owner education and sees compulsory owner training for every dog registered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Developing a model similar to the one in Calgary would benefit the community in having less unwanted animals and betterbehaved ones.â&#x20AC;?

Dr Ayerbe said Bill Bruce, a retired Canadian ranger credited with triggering the animal management reforms in Calgary,

visited Australia recently when he discussed pet regulations with government and welfare representatives.

City Hall health and local laws manager Steve Sodamaco said Geelong was not involved in the discussions but would read up on Mr Bruceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ideas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mr Bruce is a well-respected figure in international animal welfare matters and council would be studying the texts of his addresses made during his visit to Melbourne.â&#x20AC;?

Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s planned animal management restrictions also include a crackdown on owners letting dogs off leashes and mandatory desexing of cats.

More tiger reports A TASMANIAN tiger sighting has been reported at Apollo Bay, bolstering investigatorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; claims the thylacine has escaped extinction and is living in the Otway Ranges.

Big Cats Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s John Turner said the clam by three girls holidaying on Apollo Bayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s western edge helped corroborate other sightings of a striped, wolf-like creature in the district. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It came out of the scrub where a bush track was going into the bush,â&#x20AC;? Mr Turner told the Independent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just came out and casually walked across the road.

They watched it from a secondstorey window for about a min-

The Independent last month reported that an Ocean Grove couple claimed to have seen a large animal with a hyena gait, wolfish head and strange colouring on Anglesea Rd close to Blackgate Rd a fortnight ago.

Melbourne woman Amanda Ketteridge has since reported seeing a similar animal near Anglesea .

â&#x20AC;&#x153;If it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for the fact Tasmanian tigers are extinct Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d think I just saw one,â&#x20AC;? Ms Ketteridge wrote to the Independent.

A Mount Moriac farming couple last week reported strange sheep killings, with heads mauled and tongues eaten.

The couple told big-cat hunter Michael Moss they also saw a panther at Mount Moriac five years ago and again on Barrabool Rd two years later.

Mr Moss told the Independent sightings of Tasmanian tigers had been recorded as far back as the 1930s.

Freshwater Creek farmer Harry Cook has claimed sighting Tasmanian tigers several times, including in the past month.

Mr Turner said thylacine sightings had been reported across the state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thylacines exist, they certainly exist,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a recent report from the Pyrenees where a farmer rang me and said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d seen the weirdest thing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a dog with stripes and two tails. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was really interesting because a thylacine is the only marsupial with a rear-facing pouch. It obviously had a pup in the pouch head-down with its tail sticking out.â&#x20AC;?

THE ancient and mysterious Oriental art of the bonsai will be revealed with a show featuring more than 100 of the miniature trees in Geelong this weekend.

Bonsai experts will run demonstrations on the fascinating process behind the craft, with tips and advice for prospective growers.

Geelong Bonsai Club president Paul Buttigieg said the show would include a â&#x20AC;&#x153;wellstockedâ&#x20AC;? trading table of trained and semi-trained and nursery stock, along with pots, tools, wire and books.

“There’s a disparity between those areas that have and do not have heritage studies. There are still gaping holes in the outer areas,” Jennifer said.

“Highton, Ceres, Connewarre are examples of areas where there’s still a lot of work to do because some have been implemented and others haven’t.

“Grovedale is a classic example. It looks like a relatively modern suburb and in the in the main it is but it used to be called Germantown and still contains a lot of history.”

Jennifer said the preservation of our roots was important, just like it was in a family tree.

“As a community, we love to see the evidence of our cultural origins and the architecture typifies the character of the place.

“Areas are individual because of their built form. That way we can preserve their character so we don’t look like everywhere else.”

Apart from the planning involvement, the Trust also main-

tains public access to some of our magnificent buildings of yesteryear, including Barwon Grange, Portarlington Mill, Barwon Park and The Heights.

Jennifer said the work of the branch had evolved over the years, with the greater recognition of heritage issues and the formation of Heritage Victoria.

“We still receive requests from the community calls concerned about heritage and respond to requests for help with planning and conservation issues.

That’s part of the attraction for the more than 1500 members of the Geelong branch of the National Trust – discovering little pieces of the region’s heritage that might be hidden away.

Immediate past-president Jennifer Bantow said the branch covered six municipalities, so much scope was available for interesting discoveries.

“It’s reputed to be the biggest branch in Australia, so we’re always holding our branch meetings in various locations to keep in touch with our members,” she explained.

But quite apart from the pleasure it brings to members, the organisation has a serious role to play in planning issues facing local councils.

Balancing the old with the new is a perennial conundrum.

“Our objective is to try to encourage councils to adopt recommendations of heritage studies in their municipalities,” Jennifer said.

“We recommend the identified places to have a heritage overlay added by amendments to the planning scheme.”

The Trust is working on just such additions for a former blacksmiths cottage at Lara, among other suburbs.

SCIENTIFIC methodology, as outlined by Jon ‘Moo’ Kau in last week’s Independent, is a challenge for thinking people.

The inductive proposal should be, as stated, “supported by observation and experimentation” but experimentation is never proposed in the evolutionary case and observations are interpreted by the beholder.

When evidence is missing a scientist insists work is still needed and a persisting problem might call into question the proposed theory.

Until absolute proof is gathered, sceptics like me will continue to believe the best approach to life is accepting that a being of greatest intelligence created this predictably ordered universe we share.

The reason we have this debate is because the problems Mr Kau rightly takes issue with: poverty, lack of education and child abuse. For these we are all responsible.

As belief in creation is foundational to Biblical Christianity, we believe that our Creator will one day judge our behaviour toward our fellow man. While the abuses committed within the systemic church are deplorable, they are a direct contradiction of the doctrines people profess to believe.

According to the Bible, such hypocrites will face God’s most-severe punishment.

The teaching of evolution is one of the powerful factors shaping our society. Once upon a time the Bible had an effect.

The problems we face today are, I believe, due to a false appreciation of who we are and the purpose of our existence.

I prefer my God, the Biblical God of Love.

Mystery goes feral WE SAW an eerie creature in Ironbark Basin about 10 years ago.

It was bold, brazen and very confident. It was a beige colour, without stripes, had a long thin tail, and resembled a whippet.

It’s legs were too long and neck not thick enough to be a thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger.

It was trotting silently through the bush just a few meters from the path we were on.

There was no sound at all; not a leaf rustled nor a twig cracked.

If we hadn’t been looking in its direction we would never have realised an animal was moving so swiftly so close to us. It just melted away into the timeless ironbark landscape.

This creature was similar to that described by our Ocean Grove visitors recently (Independent 25 October) and its identity remains a mystery.

However, more positively, we have seen black pumas during daylight in the Otways and close to Anglesea three times, so they are definitely out there.

Local property owners have found mauled sheep and calves up in the branches of trees and have discovered their dogs attacked and taken from their chains overnight. Wild dogs cannot be blamed for these incidents.

It really is time to get serious about tracing feral creatures lurking in our region.

Teen filmmakers’ Odyssey almost complete

By MICHELLE HERBISON A NEW film festival will offer a taste of the big screen to Geelong’s next generation of cinematographic talent.

The inaugural Odyssey Geelong Film Festival will this December screen 16 short films

by VCE media studies students.

Organiser and Lara Secondary College teacher Trent Edwards said the screenings would offer audiences an “eclectic mix” of styles and genres.

“There are a few short animation features, some sportsrelated content like downhill mountain biking, a couple of comedies and some good old classic narrative films that follow a story.”

Edwards said an apparent trend toward spy action films this year had surprised him.

“There’s a lot of doubleagent super spy, James Bondish action-style material.”

Each film was “punchy and to the point”, running for about six or seven minutes, he said.

An Odyssey Geelong Film Festival mobile phone app would enable audiences to vote for their favourite films during the evening, with winners for best film and audience favourite announced at the end.

“It’s the only time you’re allowed to use a phone in the cinema,” Edwards laughed.

Big names for festival AUSTRALIAN rock stars, local musicians and popular tribute bands are among the first acts announced for a new three-day music festival in Geelong.

Organiser Hugo T Armstrong said the inaugural Motor City Music Festival would feature more than 40 bands and performers at Geelong Showgrounds from 7 to 9 March.

Armstrong said each day would have a different theme, with performers spread across five stages.

“On Friday night we’re coming hard out of the gate with a mighty night of rock and blues to kick start the festival.”

Armstrong said Saturday would feature some of Australia’s favourite tribute bands, including Kisstroyer, Thunderstruck, Appetite for Destruction and The Doors Show – Absolutely Live.

“You’ll know the words to every song,” Armstrong said.

The tribute bands would cover ev-

erything from KISS and Queen to, Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin.

Geelong performers would also feature all Saturday on a “dedicated live and local stage”, Armstrong said.

Sunday would be a “family day” featuring Braithwaite, Boom Crash Opera, The Chantoozies, Michael Stangel and Rick Price.

Youth bands would play in the evening before the festival finished with a “huge” fireworks display, Armstrong said.

“And, being the Labour Day long weekend, Monday is recovery day.”

Armstrong said the festival would also celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Blues Train, an iconic entertainment experience on the Bellarine Railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff.

The Blues Train celebrations would feature a “dedicated stage each day and night” throughout the festival.

Other festival attractions would include side show rides and food stalls.

Armstrong said tickets, priced from $25 for one-day admittance, were available from Ticketek agencies at Geelong Performing Arts Centre and Westfield Geelong’s concierge desk.

“What we try to do as artists is to

“Robbie and I put this concept together to play tribute to the greats of country rock and those who’ve been innovative over the years and changed the style of music. We tell a little story about each artist as we go along and how the music changed,” Cummins said.

He promised that fans of country rock music would be in for a treat as the pair delivered a string of wellknown and loved songs hand-picked from the genre.

“The criterion to each song that we’ve chosen is that it had to be number-one in the world for more than 10 weeks somewhere.”

The Rustic Sons would also throw in a couple of songs from their original album, showcasing their unique and innovative style inspired by the greats of the music.

When asked which performer he would most like to meet for dinner, Cummins laughed and responded with Neil Diamond - from a different style of music.

“I’ve never been asked that question and I always hoped someone would.”

Cummins said he found Diamond’s melodies, poetry and longevity inspiring before concluding: “I’m quite happy to have dinner with my wife every night.”

FLEETWOOD Mac co-founder John McVie’s cancer treatment has forced the band to cancel its 14-date Australian and New Zealand tour, including Geelong’s A Day On The Green.

“We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates,” the band said in a statement.

“We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best.”

Ticketing organisation Live Nation Australia said fans with tickets to the Fleetwood Mac show at The Hill winery on 30 November would receive refunds from 28 October.

Turrill described the blues as a “particular sound” that really spoke to him despite enjoying various musical styles from acoustic rock to metal.

“There’s a lot of feeling in the blues. I don’t want to pretend I grew up in some sort of slave time and had those sorts of hardships because that wouldn’t be fair or relevant.

“But I found I was able to use it as an outlet for any sort of hardships I was going through but also be able to tell happy stories through it as well.”

Turrill’s successes so far have included winning blues and songwriting competitions and sharing the stage with Jeff Lang, Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel, who produced his new album.

Pursuing his music is Turrill’s top goal, with his sights set on touring interstate next year.

“I hear a lot of stories about backup plans but I want to work very hard at what I’m doing.”

Turrill will perform in his hometown during Queenscliff Music Festival on 23 November.

QUEENSCLIFF’S The Blues Train rattled past Alister Turrill’s house teasing him long before the bluesman was old enough for a ride.

The 21-year-old guitarist-songwriter has come a long way in a few short years, now gearing up for his second year performing on the train during Queenscliff Music Festival (QMF).

“I’ve always loved the idea of the train. I’d wanted to do it for a long time so I was pretty happy,” he grinned.

Turrill is celebrating the release of his first album, Reverance and Resonance, which he put together with the help of a QMF perpetual scholarship won last year.

“Most of the songs are based on personal experience and stories and things like that. Most of it was very recently written, between November last year and up until I recorded it in April,” Turrill explained.

He fittingly released the album on his 21st birthday in April at Apollo Bay Music Festival.

“It was a pretty crazy feeling the moment the CDs were delivered to my

Roadster is a pleasure

By EWAN KENNEDY BMW Z4 has one of the purest body shapes on the road whether it’s used as a closed coupe, or a top-down roadster in which to appreciate the joys of cruising in Australia.

It has a very long bonnet, a short tail and you sit all the way back in the cabin.

We love the shape and have just enjoyed a great week in our home territory on the Gold Coast.

Changes to the body shape of the BMW Z4 in this midlife makeover are minimal.

Daytime running lights sit in rings around all four headlights, there are metal arches over the headlights and the chrome around the front blinkers has been enlarged.

Reshaping of the side air extractors are part of the picture and new paint colours are on offer.

Inside the cabin a bolder effect has been obtained by using piano-black in several locations, there are also mild revisions in style.

Upgrades for the 2014 model year include the installation of the BMW Professional satellite navigation system in all models.

Engines are all turbocharged-petrol units as BMW Australia couldn’t see there being a market for turbo-diesel units on our market.

There’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder in two stages of tune, giving either 135 kW or 180 kW, and a 3.0-litre straightsix with 250 kW. During our road testing at the new Z4’s launch in far north Queensland a couple of months back we fell in love with the 180 kW four-cylinder engine that sits behind an all-new eight speed automatic.

It provides almost as much performance as the six-cylinder and its lighter weight adds to the already good agility of the Z4 when cornering hard.

Our week’s retest on the Gold Coast in day-to-day driving confirmed that this is our powertrain of choice.

The six-cylinder engine in the BMW Z4 has a sports unit – a dual-

clutch seven-speed automatic.

You wouldn’t expect a high-performance roadster with a 180 kilowatt engine to have fuel consumption as low as 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres, but that’s the number we had during the stages of testing at 110 to 120 on motorways. That’s amazing efficiency and shows why BMW continues to sit at, or near the top, when global ‘engine of the year’ awards are handed out.

In day-to-day driving in the suburbs and when pushing hard in the country the consumption was generally in the eight to 10 litres per 100km range, which is still impressive in a sports machine like this.

It’s no surprise that the BMW Z4 continues to provide excitement.

It has near-perfect chassis balance, provides huge levels of grip in corners and answers virtually instantly to steering and throttle inputs from the driver.

Anyone who doesn’t come away from a drive in a Z4 on challenging roads with a big smile on their face hasn’t been trying hard enough.

There’s a lot of tyre noise on coarse-chip bitumen as found on many Australian roads, at times conversation can be difficult even when the roof is closed.

Boot space is quite limited when the roof is folded down and life is further complicated by the fact the opening is small.

Prices of the BMW Z4 are virtually unchanged from the superseded model and represent considerable savings when the added equipment is factored in.

The sheer joy of driving continues to be a factor in all BMWs and nowhere is this felt more than in this fun roadster.

By ERIC BLAIR PASSAT is a medium-large German car that appeals to those who refuse to pay big dollars for a similar car from one of the more prestigious marques from the same country. Audi won’t thank us for saying so, but there are quite a few out of sight components that are shared by Passat and upmarket Audi vehicles.

The Passat in all its formats offers better than average comfort thanks to well-shaped seats and suspension which is able to soak up just about anything thrown at it. Handling is good, with virtually neutral road behaviour at normal speeds, gradually changing to safe understeer if the big car is pushed hard.

In the earlier days almost all Passat imports were four-door sedans but with the introduction of the 1998 model, five-door wagons were offered. Wagons have been a popular choice ever since as their squared off rear end makes for a practical load area.

An interesting style called Passat CC was introduced in February 2009. Virtually a four-door coupe in the manner of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the sleek CC is just right for those who seldom use the back seat but want the convenience of rear doors. The back seat is reasonably comfortable and is certainly much better than that of the typical two-door coupe.

Volkswagen went all cute with the marketing of the latest CC when it arrived in June 2012, dropping the Passat from its name and calling it simply the CC. Don’t forget to check out both

The 2001 Volkswagen Passat. names if you’re doing a search for the pretty coupe on used-car sites.

Engine options show a fascinating variation, with four-, five-, six- and eight-cylinder layouts.

The V5 and V6 use an interesting design with a narrow-angle V which enables it to run one cylinder head covering both cylinder banks.

Even the four-cylinder Passats have enough performance for many buyers. Many of the later petrol - and all diesel - Volkswagen engines use a turbocharger.

Volkswagen started a strong push on turbo-diesel engines in Australia in 2006.

All-wheel drive isn’t all that common in Australian Passats but gives better traction coming out of corners and on slippery surfaces and is worth considering if you are doing a lot of driving on unmade surfaces, or even on the snow and ice for which it was originally designed. For the revhead, Volkswagen imported the Passat R36 from June 2008. R36 has a 300 horsepower engine, allwheel drive and is sold in both

sedan and wagon bodies.

Volkswagen Group Australia has put a lot of work in recent years in getting its supply of spare parts up to international best practice. Prices are similar to those of other European imports in its class. Similarly, the dealer group has grown markedly in recent years and VW is represented in most population centres of significant size.

Passat is a relatively complex machine in the modern manner, but a competent home mechanic should be able to do a fair bit of work on it. Always have a workshop manual on standby, and please leave safety items to professionals.

Whiting catches rising as season heats up QUALITY captures from salt and freshwater were reported over the past week.

Whiting numbers were rising, with Lonsdale Bight fishing well on fresh squid and pippies. This area also accounted for some of the best squid captures, particularly on natural-coloured jigs.

Shaun Jeffries fished close to Coles Beacon on Saturday for a bag limit of quality whiting. He enjoyed a similar same result the following day, boating 20 whiting mostly over 36cm.

Geoff Holt also caught his bag limit of whiting while fishing the entrance to Swan Bay while fishing the flood tide with pippies.

Swan Bay’s entrance also produced quality flathead, with Ballarat’s Noel Henry catching a pair of 2kg-plus fish on Monday.

Garfish were present inside Swan Bay, with Paul Stevens using a berley trail from the jetty to catch 12 thumpers in an hour.

Grant Teasdale drifted the Hermsley spoil grounds to catch small snapper to 38cm on soft plastics lures. Three pike over 1m added some extra excitement.

Grant fished the spoil grounds a day later to catch a snapper of 3.8kg on 6lb braid.

Guy Welsh also caught snapper on soft plastics while fishing close in at Bird Rock.

He caught and released an impressive tally but kept one fish of 3.6kg, which his neighbours enjoyed.

mated to be larger when his line caught on the anchor rope of a boat nearby.

Tyson Miller made the long run from Queenscliff to Fawkner Beacon, off Sandringham, after hearing about its big catches of snapper. Tyson spent longer travelling to the location than it took him to catch his bag limit of big snapper.

Garry Fitzgerland fishing land-based at Point Lillias last Saturday night with large squid heads. Rays were a constant problem until 11pm when snapper came on the bite for an hour, leaving Garry with a catch of three fish from 2.4kg to 4.7kg.

Squid were taken in many areas but the shallow grass beds off Hermsley were the most consistent. Small pink jigs worked well at first light.

Lismore’s Lake Tooliorook was inconsistent but Rod Rayner arrived late last week to note a large mudeye hatch had taken place, coaxing many trout into extremely shallow water. Rod caught two magnificent fish on mudeye and a number in the shallows with his landing net.

Trevor Holmes also reported numbers of fish visible in the shallows the same day.

He also caught fish but found that most sighted would not take his lures.

Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree remained

one of the best freshwater options, with mudeye baits and fly catching fish. Expect this lake to only improve over the coming weeks.

Moorabool Reservoir was a great choice of destination last weekend for Xavier Pullen who cast small minnowpattern lures from the southwest side of the lake to land four brown trout around 1.5kg weight. Xavier said a fly angler also caught four trout, all on a brown nymph.

West Barwon Reservoir remained lightly fished but good fish were still taken.

Mudeye was the favoured bait but the best captures were enjoyed by anglers casting deep-diving lures around the submerged trees at the right hand end of the main wall.

The Barwon River continued running high and discoloured through Geelong but produced some excellent eel fishing. Anywhere from Buckley Falls all the way to Breakwater produced eels, with worms the bait to use.

This weekend should present many options as the fishing hots up, depending on the weather. Anyone looking to catch a snapper from the surf should head to Black Rock, fishing the last two hours before dark and using squid strips for bait.

Freshwater anglers should continue to pursue either Lakes Wendouree or Tooliorook with mudeye for bait or working shallow running-bibbed lures such as Laydown or Presso minnows.

Bowlers in key to win GEELONG Cricket Club put in a solid performance last Saturday on day one of its first two-day match of the premier season.

After travelling to Fitzroy Doncaster, Geelong was asked to bat first in a tactic that looked to pay immediate dividends for the hosts when the Cats’ top order crashed to 2/4, with Eamonn Vines and James Crosthwaite back in the pavilion in the blink of an eye.

But from there, Khalid Sawas (70) and Hayden Butterworth (25) set about restoring order, the former unfortunately run out in sight of a deserved century.

From then on bat dominated ball in a series of partnerships showing that the young batting order was prepared to grind it out.

Michael Condy (59) was the best of the lower order, while Luke Muller (37) and Justin McPhee (34) also did their bit to see Geelong finish day one on 7/291.

With an in-form bowling line-up, the Cats are a big chance to claim their third game of the season this Saturday.

Round five of Geelong Cricket Association season features an almost mini-final between two unlikely combatants.

Perennial finalist Geelong West has slumped to ninth on the ladder with three losses already.

This week it plays Geelong City, which, despite some promising performances, has also suffered three losses to date to find itself 10th on the table.

Ironically, both sides have lost to the newly promoted Murgheboluc, so both will be out to not only restore some points on the field but some pride off it as well.

For City, Richard Oliver has been the standout performer with 296 runs already, although only four came last game.

For the Rams, only Mike Chapple and Damien Vassiliou have scored in excess of 100.

Tim Wight and Jarran Cook both have nine wickets, indicating the Geelong West top order holds the key here.

If it can get its act together and put some runs the board the Rams should win.

For the Dinos, skipper Clinton Ford welcomed back overseas gun Richard Stanyon last week, the big quick having an immediate impact against Marshall when he removed both opening batsmen in quick time.

Meanwhile, the Tigers had a fantastic win last week over Bell Post Hill, highlighted by a four-wicket haul and an undefeated knock of 14 by Adam Bliss in a tightly fought match.

The Tigers will go in favourites as they’re building a formidable line-up but Newcomb & District has some serious talent as well and might just be capable of an upset.

In division three last week Teesdale showed why a team’s fixture can have just as big an impact on its performances as actual on-field efforts.

In the first two-dayer of the season, the Roos managed to defeat North Shore, which, despite its best efforts, is seriously struggling.

One wonders whether the teams scheduled to only play the Seagulls in one-day fixtures only wouldn’t mind the opportunity to attempt an outright result because the points could prove crucial in terms of finals standings come season’s end.

Bell Park and Inverleigh, on the other hand, get to play them twice in a one and two-day matches.

The GCA’s fondness for the shorter forms of the game brings some inequalities hard to ignore.
